Diva data: Mariah's playing Gwinnett Arena in Sept
Singer Mariah Carey is apparently the next A-list performer to make a date at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
While there has been no formal announcement of the event -- yet -- Carey's official Web site indicates that the performer will be taking the stage at the Arena on Sept. 9.

Her camp may have spilled the beans a tad too soon.
"I cannot officially confirm that," said Arena general manager Preston Williams. "In the next week or so we'll be able to talk about it."

The concert is part of Carey's "Charmbracelet World Tour," which is supporting her album of the same name. The Grammy-award winning performer is the only recording artist to have a No. 1 single every year during the 1990s and is the first female artist to have two of her albums reach 10 million each in sales.

Her concert is the latest coup for the Arena.
The 13,0000-seat facility was christened in February with a performance by George Strait followed by Bruce Springsteen. Several other notable acts, such as Coldplay and Avril Lavigne, have either played or are slated to perform at the Arena.

Carey, though, is the first major star since Springsteen to commit.
While Williams wouldn't confirm that Carey will play, he did say that other acts of her stature are close to sealing deals for concerts at the Arena. Announcements, he said, are imminent.
"We're close to several things," Williams said.

Australia: (Thanks MariahDownUnder.com)
As Mariah prepares to embark on her first world tour in years, it has been revealed that despite the eagerness of fans, she will not visit Australia. This was confirmed by Universal Music Australia today. No reason was given and this is all the information we have at this time. We are sorry to have to deliver such disappointing news to Mariah's Australian fan base. In paticular those fans who are still waiting for the return visit promised to them after Mariah cancelled one of her 1998 Melbourne concerts.

Chart news in Australia... In its second week on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Singles Top 50, "Boy (I Need You)" falls 11 places from its #29 debut to #40. This was expected as no airplay really means there's no way it could've risen. The fact it's still in the top 40 is satisfying. Lets hope it can stay in the top 50 for as long as "Through The Rain" did (9 weeks!).

Over on the ARIA Urban chart things a slightly more pleasing. "Boy (I Need You)" debuts at #15 (It wasn't listed last week. Thanks to all who sent emails to ARIA inquiring why.) "Charmbracelet" rises slightly from #35 to #31. While this isn't outstanding, it is an improvement. Sales have improved since the initial post-debut slump.

The singer will launch the trek June 24 in Osaka, Japan, and play 10 other dates in Japan before beginning a North American leg July 18 in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Charmbracelet world tour will play at least 20 cities across the U.S., according to an Island Records spokesperson.

Carey is promoting Charmbracelet, which has sold more than 1 million copies in the U.S., according to SoundScan.

Her latest hit, "I Know What You Want," is a collaboration on Busta Rhymes' album It Ain't Safe No More, and sits at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 (see "Busta Rhymes, Mariah Carey Steal Page From R. Kelly's 'Down Low' For New Video").

Panadda said since Mariah Carey co-wrote the song, she had the right over copyright of the song and therefore can decide who can or can't sing the song. Mariah In UK Magazines
OK
Mariah Carey - Will her real lover please stand up
Mariah Carey has denied that she ever got hot and heavy with rapper Eminem and is furious at him for saying so. She has reiterated her claim that he's lying if he says they were together. ' i spoke to him on a regular basis, but it was not a relationship', she say's ' I find it pretty surprising that he would misrepresent something like that.' But during an interview last year, Eminem did say that they'd had a relationship. 'There's truth to that,' he claimed at the time. 'I respect her as a singer, but don't like her as a person. she doesn't really have it all together.' At the time, Mariah's people called the claims 'laughable'. Indeed, Mariah says she hasn't seen anyone since she broke up with Luis Miguel nearly two years ago and has had less than 5 lovers in her entire life. 'I've never had a one night stand or a fling with someone i didn't really know'.

Mariah's after Ant
He might be taken but that's not stopping Ms Carey from lusting after the Geordie lad. Boy she wants you - singer Mariah Carey has fallen for an unusual heartthrob. Antony Mcpartlin, 27, one half of the presenting double act Ant and Dec. On her most recent trip to the UK to promote her new single, the 33 year old met the two geordie presenters of Ant and Dec's saturday night takeaway. She was so smitten that she asked the former Byker Grove star out to a romantic meal at her hotel that night. However, Ant's long term girlfriend, Lisa Armstrong, will be relieved to know that he refused the pop- diva's advances, and didn't join her for dinner - which could well have ended up with the singer having him for breakfast! It was the second time that Mariah - who recently split from rapper 50 cent - had met Ant and Dec. Two years earlier she joined them when they were saying goodbye to SM:tv. She even played a part in thier final Chums sketch on the programme. Both Ant and Dec warmed to the superstar at the time, saying what a good sport she had been.

It's no wonder, however iof she goes chasing after already taken men, that Mariah complains about not having sex for 2 years. She recently claimed she had been celibate since splitting up with her last boyfriend, latin singer Luis Miguel, shortly before her infamous breakdown. Mariah, who has just celebrated her 33rd birthday on the paradise Carribbean island of St Barts, complained 'A lot of people i meet are only interested in me as a notch in thier belt, a celebrity. They don't want to know me as a person.' she said she could count the number of men she had ever slept with on 'less than one hand'. 'I've never had a one night stand in my life or a fling with someone i didn't know' she added. ' Tomorrow i could meet someone and off we'd go, but i doubt it'. We doubt it too, Mariah - especially when you go after men who are already spoken for.

Heat
Mariah is featured in an article about boob jobs. They use a large photo of Mariah on the first page and say she has had them done. However, they used a picture in which Mariah's chest doesn't look as large as it could have done. They could have chosen a worse picture so that's one good thing! They quote Sharon Osbourne's introduction to Mariah at the American Muisc Awards and Mariah's response about the gel filled bras.

More
A picture of Mariah is featured and mentioned her choice of shades.

Sneak
They use a picture of Mariah outside Claridges on Thursday 20th March and list stores that stock boots similar to hers!

Great News For "Charmbracelet"!
"Charmbracelet" climbs 51 spots to #131 on The Billboard 200 (Albums Chart), almost doubling last week's sales at 10,173 copies this week and 1,019,812 in total.

"Through The Rain" drops a spot to #5 on the Singles Sales Chart but with 3,137 copies this week sells even more than last week for a total of 70,596.

According to USA Today's airplay monitor, "I Know What You Want" is at #7 but since this is based on airplay alone (without single sales), the position might change on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Flop Talk"
Q: Hello Keith,
I was wondering what is considered a "flop?" I just picked up the new Mariah Carey CD ["Charmbracelet"] but I didn't realize that the album is being called a flop. How well has this CD sold? I noticed it wasn't on The Billboard 200, but I thought I had read about a different CD of hers from a movie ["Glitter"] not selling well awhile back. I think this one is really good!

Thank you for the information, I appreciate it!
Brandon James Roberts

A: Hi Brandon,
Everyone has a different definition for "flop." Mariah Carey's latest CD may be viewed as less successful as some of her earlier efforts, but it's certainly doing much better than "Glitter."

"Charmbracelet" (MonarC/Island) has sold 1 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's a good deal more than what "Glitter" has sold thus far. To date, the 2001 Virgin soundtrack has shifted just 573,000 copies.

Carey is current enjoying a top-10 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 with her collaboration with Busta Rhymes, "I Know What You Want." It is No. 8 on this week's chart.

Mariah Vacations Gossip
FORGET Los Angeles, Paris or Milan. If you want to rub shoulders with the stars on holiday make a beeline for Barbados.

The rich and famous have been flocking to the Caribbean island - once again turning it into the coolest place on the planet.

And, in keeping with their extravagant lifestyles, they've been splashing out fortunes on the best flights, hotels and restaurants.

Sexy MARIAH CAREY is the biggest spender - blowing an astonishing £162,000 on a break for herself and 12 flunkies.

The singer, 33, insisted on flying Concorde and staying at an opulent villa for £55,000. She spent another £20,000 on hiring a catamaran and more than £2,500 for lunch for 24 people at the Lone Star restaurant in St James.

In addition, check out Gallery 6 for vacation pictures thanks to MariahDownUnder.com from NW magazine with the caption:

"Mariah Carey is looking better than ever, as she reveals here on a friend's yacht off the coast of the Caribbean island of St Barts. After struggling with her health a while back, the 33-year-old diva has clearly returned to peak physical condition. Her feminine figure and healthy glow prove that however Mariah's next album fares, she'll still be in the running for at least one award - the sexiest shape in pop music!"

After years of yoyo dieting and a much-publicised nervous breakdown, Mariah is back looking fitter than ever. Over the years, the singer's weight has fluctuated between 56kg and 70kg. But she's now committed to a healthier lifestyle. Here are some of her diet and fitness secrets...

* When Mariah really wants to get her body into shape, she checks in to exclusive health spas such as the Enchantment Heal Spa in Arizona, where she undertakes intensive training.

* First she hops on the treadmill and bike to get her cardio rate up, then she does stomach crunches, leg-lifts wiith a heavy medicine ball and push-ups.

* Mariah has tried to cut out as much fat as possible from her diet, preferring to eat salads with fish and skinless grilled chicken. For snacks she prefers fruit.

* The singer likes a drop of alcohol, but she's learnt to replace her favourite drink, Cristal champagne, with bottled water and iced tea with a slice of lemon, no sugar. She now only drunks bubbly on special occasions.

* On holiday, when the singer jumps aboard those luxury yachts, it's not all sunbaking. Mariah does long swims and water skis every day to shape her arms and legs.

Mariah's Singapore Concert Delayed
MARIAH CAREY'S CONCERT AT THE PADANG JUNE 11th DELAYED
Mariah Carey's June 11th concert at the Padang is being delayed.

Mariah, with the assessment of her management team, has decided not to proceed with the Singapore concert on the June 11th date after taking into consideration the latest developments of SARS and the fact that there is still a travel advisory recmending no travel to Singapore from both World Health Organization and US State Dept.

The Singapore concert will proceed either in July following her Japan tour, or in November after her European Tour. Her China and Hong Kong tour dates had already been cancelled with Seoul and Singapore pending. The new concert date will be announced on May 5th 2003. Ticket sales are suspended until May 5th 2003. If a re-scheduled date either in July or November is being confirmed, all existing purchased tickets are still valid and ticket sales will continue.

Asian pop superstar Nicholas Tse who had agreed to be the special guest and do a duet with Mariah for the June 11th date is expected to be available for any new date.

In the case that a new date cannot be confirmed on May 5th, all existing ticket holders will be given a full refund, and the concert treated as cancelled since there would be no fixed date for re-schedule.

All existing ticket holders will be contacted via telephone and email to be advised of this development by the time this press release goes to print.

International News Update
Australia: (Thanks MariahDownUnder.com)
"Boy (I Need You)", the second single lifted from Mariah's latest album "Charmbracelet" has debuted at #29 on the Australian Recording Industry Association singles chart. This debut is quite respectable seeing as it received literally no major airplay.

In what was a massive week of new release singles, Mariah was the fifth highest debut behind Kasey Chambers (#5 - excessive airplay for months), Madonna (#7 - most hyped song of the year), Boomkat (#18 - great airplay for their debut single) and Shakaya (#27 - in-store appearances around the country). Singles by Leanne Rimes, Shawn Desman, Nas and Lil' Kim did not even make the top 50.

Strangely, "Boy (I Need You)" has not been listed on the ARIA Urban singles chart. It is obviously an "urban" song, not to mention it features rapper, Cam'ron. Had it debuted on the Urban chart it would've entered at #11. You can email ARIA and ask them why it's not listed: charts@aria.com.au.

In album news, "Charmbracelet" drops another five places to #35 on the ARIA Urban albums chart. It has not been on the standard album chart for months.

Brazil: (Thanks Maurício)
"Boy (I Need You)" was on number one yesterday on MTV Brazil's videos countdown. Keep voting for it!

Mariah Defended on "Blues & Soul"
The following article appears on the latest edition of "Blues & Soul" Magazine (April 15-28th - Lisa Maffia on the front cover) in page 42. (Thanks MariahCareyUK.com)

"LL Cool J's "Love U better", Maraiah Carey's "Boy I need you", Whitney Houston's "Whatchulookinat", Toni Braxton's "Hit the Freeway", and TLC's "Girl Talk" would have all been big hits had national radio and more ILR stations supported them. All these tracks made reasonable chart positions with little or no love at national or commercial radio level.

I think that there is a vendetta against Maraiah Carey in the UK and, to be honest, I dont' know why. That egotistic sad case from the Sun was intent on writing about what Mariah had got up to whilst in the country and the week of her release of her current single.

She is persecuted by Mr Mohan because she brought her own chef to cook her a meal of chicken and vegetables. With what is going on in the world today, is that such a crime?

This piece was written by the same man that virtually hung, drew and quartered Mariah for that most ghastly of crimes 'depression'. Yep, because she was depressed, Mr Mohan decided it was his duty to kick her while she was down a couple of years ago and he has not given up in his relentless battle to try and wreck this stunning vocalist's career.

Mariah has been given a ride worse than that of Michael Jackson and R Kelly...and they have both been linked with child sex allegations. You know my thoughts on both of these cases: they have appeared in print on these pages and you know I think these guys will always remain innocent until proven guilty.

But surely what they have been accused of should attract more bad press than 'depression'. I also believe that radio has a hidden agenda against Mariah - had Jennifer Lopez recorded "Boy" with Camron, radio would have been all over it like a rash. Which is rather sad because, although Ms Lopez is good at what she does, it is like comparing Division 1 with the Champions League...there really is no contest!"

Mariah Carey: Bouncing Back
Q: You talk about how you get only a few hours' sleep a night and used to go without it altogether. How does that happen?
A: I learned to say no only this year. I was talking to Oprah Winfrey the other day and she was echoing what I was saying... saying, unless you're in the business or you are famous it's really hard to explain to people because you just dont' get the intensity of living under a microscope 23 hours a day. Magnify that by me being in New York doing a phone interview with Australia in the morning because of the time difference and getting maybe an hour of sleep and getting up and doing a photo shoot and 20 more interviews, then going on TV. It was so intense. Nobody was caring for the human being inside the machine.

Q: You went on Oprah talking about your breakdown. Do you think the general public can relate to it?
A: Well, there was a woman with four kids and she was saying how she was exhausted all the time and after hearing my story she realised she had to make some changes in her life because it's just not healthy. That makes it all worth it. You have to talk about stuff that goes on so the public can understand it, apply my larger-than-life situation to their circumstances. If it has helped one person change their life, then mission accomplished.

Q: You talk about how you have a very special relationship with your fans. Can you describe it?
A: My hardcore fans really did stay with me (during the breakdown). They've always been there for me. I kind of consider them an extended family, which is a strange thing to say because most people don't have that kind of relationship with their fans, but I really do. I think my fans understand me a lot more than the press writing about me. People who follow your every move and understand inside jokes get it.

Q: You have had a lot of control over your music. Do you think the Glitter movie went wrong because you handed over that control?
A: I was naive in assuming it would be a similar process because it was an idea I brought in. But they changed writers in the middle of the movie because it was going too edgy, which is what I wanted, something with some substance to it. But everything happens for a reason. I did an independent movie right after that, Wisegirls with Mira Sorvino, which was really edgy. My character was a drug-dealing waiter. We went to the Sundance Film Festival and got great reviews, a standing ovation. That was a great moment of validation. I'd just come out of a horrible experience and then got to feel a different side of the movie business. I have other independent projects in the works, to showcase that I do like to do character roles, I don't need to just be a singer to be accepted. I always wanted to do independent, edgy roles, but people were saying it was too controversial and might harm my career, or they'd say nobody will be able to look at you as other than anything but Mariah Carey the singer.

Q: Toni Braxton recently came out and gave your credit for mixing diva R&B with hip-hop way before it became cool.
A: Yeah, I saw that, that was nice of her. I love hip-hop. I grew up on hip-hop in New York. I experienced the birth of hip-hop. It's organic for me. But people don't understand. Take Dream Lover. It's a cute little pop song, but it's based on a sample of a record called Blind Alley which has been used by so many rappers just freestyling - Ain't No Half Steppin' by Big Daddy Kane for one. The average public hears Dream Lover and has no clue. But Q-Tip said to me, "You realise you're a catalyst for what's happening in music right now. You used Blind Alley, you sang over that loop." It takes someone knowledgeable about old school hip-hop to know that. I love ballads, they're therapy for me. But doing Boy I Need You with Cam'Ron or You Got Me with Jay Z, that's part of me too.

Q: You recorded with Justin Timberlake for Charmbracelet but didn't use it on the album. Why?
A: We didn't get it finished in time, so it'll have to be a remix. It's actually really nice. It'll come out.

Q: You've also covered a Def Leppard song, Bringin' on the Heartbreak. Is there a rock chick inside you trying to get out?
A: That's the smallest part of me, but when I love a song and I'm passionate about it, I think a song can stand up to any arrangement. I did love that song when I grew up.

Q: Does it bother you that your past few albums haven't sold as well as previous releases?
A: What matters is expressing myself creatively, feeling as if I've put everything I have into my music. Obviously it matters to maintain a level of success, but the one message that comes across on the album is hope and faith, celebrating life and not taking it for granted.

Q: You've never been an artist who tours a lot. Will that change with this record?
A: I'll definitely tour this album, but I have to conceptualise the show. I'm itching to get back on stage.

RPN have had the pleasure to ask the team of Widelife questions about working with Mariah Carey. They have been kind enough to reveal opinions and spend time answering questions. Below are highlights from a very informative interview:

Q: What do you think of mariah?
A: What can you say about Mariah… she has one of the most undisputed voices of our era. Working on “the one” remix is an opportunity we could not have forseen a year ago. Mariah has always supported the dance scene through her illustrious collaborations with David Morales, amongst others, and to be given the opportunity to be part of that history is truly an honor.

Q: What do you think of the track the one?
A: Ironically enough this song really touched home, making the project even more meaningful for us. The message contained within is something that all of us have gone through at one time or another. It is one of the strongest songs on the album and should do well when released.

DJ Mariah? Singer May Spin Discs
Mariah Carey may be expanding her career horizons — she's thinking of becoming a radio host and disc jockey.

Carey is in talks with Infinity Broadcasting to have a show — most likely a weekly one — on the new Blink 102.7 in New York. This is the station previously and famously known as WNEW-FM, which Infinity relaunched last week to much excitement.

Mariah would pre-tape the shows, but would take questions from fans on the air. This would seem like a good outlet for the fan-sensitive star, who calls her followers "lambs" and issues them regular audio announcements on her web site.

Mariah would be the biggest star of all the celebrities Infinity's John Sykes and Andy Schuon have signed up to steer the new station. They already have Linda Lopez — J-Lo's sister — and Booker, both personalities from entertainment TV, and a real-life couple as well, to co-host their morning show.

But the station won't be able to have Lopez and Carey in the same studio at the same time. Carey will never forget how J-Lo stole music from Carey's Glitter project for her own album.

Mariah, by the way, has a hit singing with Busta Rhymes on his new single, "I Know What You Want."

    'GQ' Article
Pop History tells of Mariah Carey's River Deep, Mountain High. In Mariah Carey's world everything was always gigantic: she had the biggest hits (Without You), the most unbelievable flops (Glitter) as well as suffering the most catastrophic nervous breakdown in the Showbusiness. For more than one year she was overtaken by that life, now she is back, and radiating again. For GQ she placed her self before the camera of the photographer Richard McLaren, where she represented the history of the Pop Music. Decade for decade, float for float, feeling for feeling. Critics, who bashed her, will realize : Mariah Carey is again at the top of Pop.

Q: Ms. Carey, I am honered, to speak with you. I am a big fan.
A: Thank You, I'm very glad to hear that. I'm happy to be here as well.

Q: I admit however: Many of my friends dislike your music, respectively, because it's too cheesy. I always tell them "What is a disadvantage about expressing your feelings?"
A: Naturally nothing - The soul is always concerned with feelings.

Q: Nevertheless, they, and I still think you have the best voice in the world.
A: You are very kind to me. How do your friends react when you support me like this.

Q: They say, I should also dislike your music, but I never would.
A: Ha! I really don't believe that you can convince these boys to like my music.

Q: What must you do, to sound like you do ?
A: I only can take two days to relaz and rest my voice, between work. Also, it is important to eat healthy, get enough sleep… and best not to give any interviews. Being a singer is a very hard job, you must discipline yourself, and only people with a strong will can do that. Since my 18th birthday, I live almost like a competitive athlete.

Q: Are you constantly enjoying, and partying, as a famous TV quote: "sex and drugs and skirt ’n’ roll" Is that why you had a breakdown?
A: In the opposite. My Ex-husband Tommy Mottola worried that I functioned my whole life like a machine. I put out my first record at 18, the first number-one-hit at20. Then almost every year an album or a world tour. I wasn't aware of the word 'rest'. Monthly I worked 20 hours in a day. Also, It would happend that I flew within 24 hours from Paris to London to Madrid in order to give interviews or to appear on television. I always had 15 people around me, that always expected too much of me. Believe me: if I had a free minute in my life, I would slept immediately.

Q: No sex? No skirt ’n’ roll? At least a little joke?
A: Only so much how my husband allowed.

Q: Now however it, you are known to have a party reputation; and since you joined the record company DefJam under contract, you are regularly invited to all the parties, and you are named the rappers "girl". Additionally, it's rumored that you host the best Hip Hop parties of the city in your house. Is that true ?
A: I know nothing of this. Maybe when I'm not there, haha. No, really, I live in an apartment, how could I ?

Q: Too bad, I though I would stop once.
A: Unfortunately these parties will not find place in my apartment. Sorry, this rumor is totally false.

Q: Yet more rumors: Have you've slept with Eminem?
A: We are very FAR from the truth, it never happened.

Q: That you don't usually wear underwear.
A: That a journalist must be crazy.

Q: Therefore you do wear underwear?
A: Yes! Of course. I wear totally normal underwear, just as any other women.

    Junior Vasquez To Remix 'B.O.T.H'
Junior Vasquez' Official Site states that he is currently working on a remix for "Bringin' On The Heartbreak". The site actually lists it as "Bringing on the Heartattack" - but I'm not sure if it's just a typo or an intentional twist to the song's title.
To remind you, Junior Vasquez has previously worked with Mariah on the [incredible] dance remixes for "Heartbreaker" which turned out to be very successful!

IDJ In Fan-Club Biz With Carey Venture
Island Def Jam (IDJ) is getting into the artist fan-club business, kicking off the initiative with an Internet-based club for Mariah Carey, Billboard Bulletin reports.

Carey's club, Honey B. Fly, launches Monday (April 14). The service, which is accessible at mariahcareyfanclub.com, costs $35 per year in the U.S. and $45 per year elsewhere. Members get access to presale concert tickets, music and video exclusives, an autographed photo, an exclusive T-shirt, and a membership card that can be used at special retail and concert events.

IDJ VP of new media Larry Mattera says Carey's venture is the first of a half-dozen fan clubs the label plans to launch in the coming year. Jerry Blair, president of Carey's MonarC Entertainment, says the artist's upcoming concert tour -- the first of her career -- is an ideal platform for driving club subscriptions.

Carey's debut MonarC/Island album, "Charmbracelet," is No. 161 in its 18th week on The Billboard 200 and has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of 1 million copies. Carey's guest shot on Busta Rhymes' "I Know What You Want" is No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

    Want "Yours" To Be Released?
Hey everyone; do you want "Yours" with Justin Timberlake to be released? When asked on MariahCarey.com, Mariah said we should address Jive Records with our requests if we want it as a single. Freddy suggested that we should do it as a whole instead of doing it individually, so if someone can start a petition of some sort and send us the link to publish so that all fans could sign, we'd try and forward it to Jive Records.

Speaking of the next single release... you guys chose "BOTH" as your choice for next single on our poll, and we all know it's going to be released, but take a look at the results anyway and vote on the new poll.

Mariah: Yeah, I just wanted to say I haven’t called in a minute and I wanted to thank everybody out there for all the fabulous anniversary gifts and festivities and things of that sort. Now, I had a special guest waiting to talk to you. Let me see if he’s still available. Hold on one second.

And I just want to say thank you. Thank you much again. And I love you, appreciate you and enjoy you. Bye, bye [high octave].

Mariah Carey Discusses Her Ex-Husband On '60 Minutes' Australia
(4/4/03, 3 p.m. ET) -- Mariah Carey sat down with Liz Hayes of 60 Minutes Australia for an interview that aired on March 30.

During the sit-down, Carey was asked how influential her ex-husband--the former head of Sony Music, Tommy Mottola--was on her career.

"I think he was very important in terms of his understanding of how to market people and his understanding of how to get a company to really rally behind an artist and also in the way that I was presented initially," Carey replied. "But see I came to him with the voice that I have. I came to him with the songs that went on to be Number One records."

Carey added, "I came to him looking the same way, so it's not like he imaged me, like, 'Hey, why don't you grow your hair long and make it curly?' or 'Why don't you wear a black dress?' When I met him, I had only two dresses. One was pink, one was black."

Carey also said she felt she had to prove herself more because she was married to the head of Sony: "I was put in a position where people looked at me like this princess and probably a really mean, evil person that you had to walk on eggshells around, because that's what the people around me who worked for him, they didn't work for me really...I paid half of them, but I think he paid half of them, too."

"The thing is that the image that they put out there was, 'Don't even look at her, don't talk to her,' this and that," added Carey.

Star magazine reports that Mariah Carey gave a female fan the literal dress off her back when she taped the 'Bringin' On The Heartbreak' video in Los Angeles. A girl who was gushing about Mariah's dress said, "Can I wear your dress to my prom?" Mariah said, "What size are you?" When the fan said "zero", Mariah shot back, "I'm sorry, this is NO zero! But if you want to get it altered for your prom, I'll give it to you when we're done. I promise." Well Mariah came through on her promise.

    'Star Search' Producer Mentions MC
"Patience is a virtue. And "Star Search" supervising producer Meredith Fox is very, very patient. But auditions for the CBS show tend to be teeth-gritting ordeals because hopefuls stand up and deliver the same songs over and over. The most-belted tunes? "Mariah Carey's `Hero,'" sighs Fox, who coordinated tryouts Thursday in Chicago. "Then there's Alicia Keys' `Fallin',' 'Amazing Grace' and 'The Star-Spangled Banner.' You try to be as open-minded as possible when someone steps up to the microphone and says, `I'm going to sing a song by Mariah Carey' ... but a part of you whimpers." About 300 locals auditioned for a slot on the show and a shot at the $100,000 grand prize."

    MC Answers Fan Qs
Mariah's Official Site has been updated with new Q & As on the "Ask Mariah" section. Here are a few interesting ones:

Q: MC- Will "Yours" with Justin ever be released?
A: I would love for it to be released! We need to ask Justin's label Jive Records for the answer to this question... lol Mariah www.jiverecords.com

Q: Hi MC! I TRUELY IDOLIZE U!!! I love u very much! My question is pretty sinple. I was just wondering if u keep in touch with your high school/junior high friends? I remember seeing a clip of u making pizza with your friend Josephine. Are you still friends with her? Please reply! Thanks - Kara
A: Yes, and you will be seeing some more random moments alla making pizza, etc soon. Possibly a TV special or things of that nature. lol Mariah

Q: A couple of years ago, I heard that you was planning to released a tell-all book about her life. Are there any plans to write/release one??
A: I hate to be vague but yeah...we have a lot of things in the works. Keep ya posted. xoxo Mariah

Q: About CHARMBRACELET: First I love it! Just wondering: Does "Lullaby" and "The roof" have a connection? The rithm and ending chorus sounds very very similar...also, what´s the history behind "Subtle Invitation"...is it really a message to someone? Are u expecting an answer to that? Or the person who you refer at it already corresponded to that? TE AMO - Lu, Brazil
A: Yes, Lullaby is kinda like part 2 of The Roof and Subtle Invitation is connected to the story as well. As far as expecting an answer I doubt that is in the cards because someone would have to be sensitive and analytical to know I was singing about them and that's not the case in this situation. Unfortunately, we are not dealing with Albert "freakin" Einstein here :) Mariah

Q: Hey Mariah! Just wanted to ask if the Last Night A Dj Saved My Life music video will ever see the light We all want to see it!
A: Yes, just working out some final details. Hoping to include it on the web site for my new Fan Club. Thanks, Mariah

Q: I heard Mariah is going to release a remix album. Is this true?
A: Yes, Sony is releasing a remix album (5 years later...) I used to ask them all the time to release one but no one wanted to back then. It is coming out at some point this year even though it should have come out in 1998. Oh Well!! Thanks for the question, luv Mariah

    Small International Update
Here's some extra information from the UK:

    - Mariah Connection had an exclusive opportunity to conduct an interview with Punjabi Hit Squad. They recently did a remix for Mariah Carey:

Q: Who is Panjabi Hit Squad?
A: We are a London-based team of DJ/Producers, comprising of members Markie Mark, Rav, Dee and Amo. Our background is in the Asian music scene, we've released two hit Bhangra albums, but have moved into the Hip-Hop / R'n'B field in the past two years.

Q: Who have you worked with before?
A: We did a remix for Ashanti, on the track 'Baby'. One of our favourite tunes from her album.

Q: Who are you major influences?
A: From the R'n'B arena we respect people like Timbaland, Dre, Neptunes and Just Blaze a lot... our biggest Asian influence is probably the Panjabi producer Charanjit Ahuja.

Q: What do you really think of Mariah Carey?
A: She's someone we have grown up listening to, so it's kind of a weird feeling producing a track for her! I think our favourite time (before now) was when she pulled out 'Fantasy' with ODB. That track just blew everyone away.

The 'Charmbracelet' album has some wicked moments, especially 'You Got Me', and the tune that uses Ice Cube's 'Today Was a Good day' sample (name escapes me)..
Her standing in the music industry speaks for itself.

Q: Did you talk to her about the remixes you have done for her?
A: Not directly, but she had to personally OK all the mixes. Mariah is involved in all areas, she has to like a remix if it's going on her single. So we would go straight from the studio and email her mp3's of the remix while it was in progress.

She was really into the whole Indian and Arabic-sound going on, she wanted more of it..

Q: What can we expect from your remixes [for those who don't know your work]?
A: Our sound is pretty wide-ranging, it's probably best described as 'Urban Asian Flava'... we have grown up listening to R'n'B and Hip-Hop but at the same time we always had traditional Indian music goin' on in the background..
It's great that we can now bring those Indian influences into our work.

Q: Have you showcased any of the remixes at any of your giggs, if so what is the next venue you will play?
A: We play in clubs around four times a week at the moment, throughout Europe. Too many to name!

Q: What other projects are you working on and what other releases can we expect from you?
A: Quite a few projects but most of which we're having to keep on the downlow... we have produced something for the next Ashanti album and Keith Murray single. There will be another Panjabi Hit Squad album later this year.

CB To Be Re-released in the US?
"Elsewhere on Singles & Tracks, 'I Know What You Want' by Busta Rhymes & Mariah Carey advances 11-9 while nabbing Greatest Gainer/Sales honors. 'Want' moves 45-14 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales after the retail launch of the 12-inch vinyl, which follows a premature debut last issue as a result of street-date violations. 'Want' is the seventh top 10 single for Busta and the 21st for Carey on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Initially appearing only on Rhymes' It Ain't Safe No More, the single's success has prompted Monarc/Island/IDJMG to press it onto Carey's album Charmbracelet as well."

    Her Boys' Night Out
    April 1, 2003
CAREY-ING ON: Mariah Carey is all over Europe these days, performing and soaking up adulation. Mariah loves being a star. She does not disdain perks. She does not hide from her fans. She does not pretend to be the girl next door.

The other night in London, Mariah experienced a first - she sang and shook everything the good Lord gave her in a gay club. The boys, who appreciate all aspects of Mariah's career, including the hilarious "Glitter," went crazy for her. Her reception was so enthusiastic that she plans to pit-stop at other gay spots, abroad and over here.

These little miniconcerts are a preparation for her world tour, which kicks off in Southeast Asia in June.

Remember when Mariah was "all washed up" because she had one record and a movie that flopped? Mariah, following her own drummer, has also not heeded the advice of industry experts who advised her to tone down the scanty clothes and sexy ways, and instead focus on her amazing voice. I guess Mariah figures she has a number of assets, so why can't she be a great singer with a great shape?

It seems to be working for her.

'Joe Millionaire': The Truth About Mariah!
    April 02, 2003
It's only been a few months since the "Joe Millionaire" finale, so when ET was offered the opportunity to catch up with stud muffin EVAN MARRIOTT, we were there.

The erstwhile TV bachelor was volunteering his services for a blimp flight to raise money for We Spark, an organization that supports cancer patients and their families. Evan's connection to the disease is through his aunt, who has breast cancer that spread to her brain and liver.

Before he took to the skies, the curly-haired hunk revealed that he had also been aloft for a MARIAH CAREY video -- only that was in a helicopter. Evan played a manager/bodyguard in the soon-to-be-seen music video.

"She's a good-looking girl," Evan told ET about Mariah. "This is her big comeback video, so it was really good."

As for published reports linking him to the pop singer, he says, "I try to keep it as professional as possible, because you never know when you are going to get slapped down. But she was really nice and super attractive."

    From QX magazine:
Last week saw the rumour factory go into overdrive ! On most nights it would have been enough just to feature the headline act ,Liberty X. Most of us would have been satisfied by that. But by Friday, word was out that Mariah Carey was also due to make an appearance. And did she ever!!!

Liberty X opened the night in truly sharp style…

Then came the announcement that the “surprise” act, which Jeremy admitted had turned into common knowledge ( We suspected the giant butterfly backdrop was a bit of a giveaway !) would be on the stage shortly. In true US diva style a short while turned into 45 minute wait which some people chose to grumble and groan at. Nonetheless sore headed people aside, when she did arrive, it was like no other entrance the club had ever seen!

A velvet chaise longue carried by a set of muscle marys made its way through the crowd to the stage. Lying on the seat and draped in lace, Mariah was unveiled to thousands of eager fans. She writhed and wriggled in a long slinky tight dress whilst wearing what must be the tallest pair of sparkling heels in the world. Playing her respects to G-A-Y and the club she camped herself up to the Max, playing to the cameras and crowd, and working through three songs. First was a house version of her hit ‘Butterfly’ followed by her new single ‘Boy ( I need you )’ before closing with ‘Subtle Invitation’, a track from her new album. The dress, the heels, the hair, the cheek, the ass and that astounding voice . It was one hell of a show on all accounts and well worth the wait!

    From Boyz magazine:
Poor Liberty X. You’d have thought they’d have been used to coming second after losing out to Hear’say in the original series of Popstars. Well, they were forced into playing second fiddle again last Saturday……. The X’ers had been scheduled to headline the night, but that was until promoter Jeremy Joseph received a call a couple of days beforehand from the management of a certain American superstar. None other than Mariah Carey herself had requested to put in a surprise appearance at the gay super club….Word had obviously spread quickly around Soho, because the Astoria was absolutely rammed. Was Miss Carey really going to show up?… She certainly kept everyone waiting (till 3am)… but boy, did she make an entrance. Bizarrely, her management had dreamt up the idea that she should be carried through the crowd, on a chaise longue, to the stage, where she would be scooped up by a dozen, butterfly-winged muscle boys. And although they had to employ an army of security guards to ease her passage through the throng, they just pulled it off. Opening number ‘Butterfly’ was a suitably impressive and lavish number, and she followed it up with an equally storming rendition of new single ‘Boy (I Need You)’, joined on stage by yet more dancers.

Between songs she engaged in kooky banter with the crowd (“G-A-Y? Why? Because we like you!”), complained about the smoky atmosphere, and threw a feather boa and gold ring into the audience. “I only found out afterwards that she was wearing a million quid’s worth of jewellery,” Jeremy Joseph later told us. “That ring she threw into the audience was white gold, it was worth a fortune!” She ended with a stripped-down rendition of album track ‘Subtle Invitation’. It was a bit of a low-key way to end the set, as few people knew the track. Indeed. We heard a few disgruntled punters complain that she hadn’t sung any of her big hits. However, it was still a memorable performance and yet another coup for G-A-Y. Apparently, Mariah herself enjoyed the gig. “She stayed around for about an hour afterwards,” Jeremy confirmed, “Chatting in the dressing room. She even said she’d like to come back in September!”

Mariah on Top Of The Pops this Friday:
Hitting the No.17 spot, Miss Carey returns to the 'Pops accompanied with her brand new best bud - rap ruffian Cam'Ron. 'Boy (I Need You)' is the second single from her latest album 'Charmbracelet' and is a remake of Cam's 'Oh Boy'. Describing the video as: "kind of like Japanese pop - Speed Racer meets Hello Kitty meets me and Cam'Ron," Mariah travelled to some of the most busiest areas of Japan to film this little baby. However, hampered by Carey crazy crowds, the crew were forced to shut down at the first location and only managed to get a feeble 30 seconds of footage, all in the drizzling rain. Oh boy. Have no fear of that this Friday, though, Mariah worshippers. Safe behind the gates and under the roof of the 'Pops studio, nothing's gonna stop her this time. Now's your chance to go really Car-azy! Kids Rate "Charmbracelet"
Matt wrote: "I work for an after-school program at a junior high school (grades 6-8). They publish a newspaper every month and they always review an album and rate each song on a scale from 1-10 (1 being lowest, 10 being highest). Then they give the album an overall rating. This month they chose Mariah's "Charmbracelet" and here's how they ranked it. They made some cute comments about some of the songs...

    Through The Rain - 7
Boy (I Need You) - 10 ("loved the beat")
    The One - 8
    Yours - 5
    You Got Me - 6
    I Only Wanted - 4
Clown - 9 ("thought the lyrics were hilarious")
    My Saving Grace - 8 ("very church-like")
You Had Your Chance - 6
    Lullaby - 4
    Irresistible - 9
    Subtle Invitation - 5
Bringin' On The Heartbreak - 6
Sunflowers - 3 ("very personal, but depressing")
Through The Rain (Remix) - 5
Overall album rating - 9.5 ("definitely recommended") "
