Mariah Talks About New Video
//
7:28 PM EST Updated by Dino
Mariah Carey is shooting the video for her new single, "It's Like That," this week with director Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour," "Red Dragon"). "I don't want to give it away yet," Carey told MTV Radio recently, "because you know how things change, but it's a Las Vegas casino scene. Brett is great at giving things a cinematic feel. We did the 'Heartbreaker' video together, and it had such a sense of humor to it, that I hope to have that for this video." ______________________________________________________________

Important Notice: Digital Downloads to Count Towards Billboard Hot 100
//
7:27 PM EST Updated by Liron
Effective soon, a new Billboard rule is being implemented, allowing digital song sales to count towards the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This means that every time you'll download "It's Like That" on iTunes or other digital outlets, you're helping Mariah move up on the Hot 100! A digital download is the equivalent to a single sale's impact on the chart where 1,000 copies sold equals 1 million audience impressions. You are able to download "It's Like That" from these digital outlets: iTunes   Musicmatch   MSN Music   NapsterNote: No official statement has been released regarding the date when the rule becomes effective yet. It is said to happen even as early as this week. We'll keep you posted. ______________________________________________________________

"Mimi" readies "celebratory" spring album
Pop diva Mariah Carey is set to return this spring with a dance-heavy R&B album, The Emancipation of Mimi. The record, which Carey calls "the real essence of who I am," was titled after the nickname used by those closest to her.
"'Mimi' is a nickname that my friends and loved ones call me, so I wanted to think about that and make it representative of where I'm at as an artist," explains Carey. "It was like, 'OK, this is the fun side, the real me, and not the image and the baggage that comes with the whole "Mariah Carey" thing.' It's a reflection of this being a celebratory moment in my life."
This optimism is in contrast to the drama the diva has experienced of late. While in the studio in November, Carey posted a note on her Web site, stating that for a period she had felt "imprisoned by my insecurities . . . For the first time in my life, I feel free and unashamed to be who I really am." When asked about these issues, Carey replies, "That's just how I've been since I was a child. I come from a bi-racial family, and I moved thirteen times when I was growing up. I had, you know, not the average childhood. Then certain relationships I was in were not that great for someone who does have insecurities . . . And it intensifies when you become famous and you're under a microscope."
The first, club-ready single off Emancipation, "It's Like That," was produced by longtime friend Jermaine Dupri. "I'm really excited about it -- Jermaine and I have such great chemistry in the studio," Carey says. "This song to me is a fun party record, like 'We're just going out, having a good time and not being stressed about anything.'"
The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams also helped set the upbeat tone. "It became like a party atmosphere: He was working with Snoop on his record in one room, and with Nelly in another, and then we all ended up collaborating together," says Carey. "I'd never worked with the Neptunes before, but I'd wanted to since they worked with Jay[-Z]. Then when other female artists worked with them, I was like, 'Now I won't be the first girl!' [laughs] It was a fun moment for us, to finally get in the studio and feel each others' vibe." Snoop and Carey were reunited for the first time since 1999's "Crybaby" (Rainbow), which the singer calls "one of my favorite songs."
In addition to the dance-friendly tracks, Emancipation brings the searching ballads that Carey is known for. "I love [the single] as a first look," she says, "but there are also songs with a little bit of meaning behind them." She dubs the "inspirational" record "Fly Like a Bird" the album's "most introspective moment, and the most powerful vocally and lyrically." The pastor from Carey's church, Pastor Clarence Keaton, actually speaks on the track. "So it's a really special song for me," she confesses. Carey also describes the process of recording these slower tracks as freer and "much more organic." "I went in with live musicians, and I sang the songs with the band: I would sing different guitar riffs with the guitar players," she explains, "and tell the horn players what I was hearing."
With more than a few young pop stars taking to lip-syncing these days, Carey's powerhouse voice puts all that "acid reflux" talk to shame. Performing regularly live, she claims, actually helped rather than hurt her vocals on the new record. "I went on tour [for 2002's Charmbracelet], and that got me in a great place vocally," Carey says. "I would do an entire show of my songs, which are really demanding, and then I would take two days off and sleep and rest and hang out -- that was excellent for my voice. So when I went back into the studio, I was able to experiment vocally and go back to singing in more of a belting register and a higher register -- and yet still do the breathy, soft things that I like."
A tour in support of Emancipation is in the works for this summer. But Carey worries about how to keep her fans happy. "I always want to make sure the fans are happy when they leave, and they've heard all their favorite songs," she admits. "And it's hard because I've had a lot of records! But I think once the fans get this album, they're going to want to hear the new songs."
Meanwhile, Carey is shooting the video for "It's Like That," directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon), this week in Las Vegas. When asked if the honesty of Emancipation will call for more of a stripped-down look, Carey laughs. "I don't think people really want to watch a video of me looking how I look when I'm recording -- which is, like, boxer shorts, no makeup and a tank top," she says. "To me, videos are like dress-up moments. We all want to look good, you know." ______________________________________________________________

Though she initally was leading the poll, she has been eclipsed by Madonna's "Crazy For You." -- To celebrate the 1,000th number one single on the British music charts, BBC Radio asked its listeners to vote for their favorite number one single. A massive 25,000 responses were gathered, and Mariah's 1994 UK hit single "Without You" was named the ninth greatest number one single in the station's poll. -- It's that time of the year again! FHM Magazine is compiling their yearly list of the world's sexiest women and they want your input. Please vote for Mariah in their 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll. -- Mariah is mentioned in a little blurb on the front cover of the latest issue of Radio & Records. Lambs Radio Interview Transcript & Audio Clip
//
9:37 PM EST Updated by Lynn
The All-Mariah radio show, Lambs Radio had an exclusive interview with Mariah which was aired today on cable 99.3 KCLA FM, Los Angeles at 6:30 PM PST. Below is the transcript of the interview. Please note that this is a rushed transcript and may not be in its final form and may be updated. Mariah: Hey… Lambs Radio (Isabel): Hey Mariah how are you? MC: I’m great. How are you? LR: I’m great thank you! Thanks for making the show. Welcome to the Lambs Radio show. It’s your show. MC: Thanks for having the Lambs Radio Show. I just wanna say that because it is a Lambs Radio Show and I wished I had more time but now I have to go and be dragged out and do some other stuff uhm like all the regular questions that the regular people who don’t know about me asked have been asked all day and are probably gonna be on the internet so you probably wanna ask just the lamb moments. LR: No problem. Your fans would love to know if you’re gonna have a meet and greet or any tour for the upcoming album? MC: Yeah I gotta get the tour together but I have to figure out what I wanna do because there’s so many songs in the new album that I wanna do but uhm I always try to give the fans you know the older stuff too but it’s just that there are so many songs that are really like perfect for doing live from this album so… I gotta get it together. Figure it on out. LR: Actually, you know what, it’s moved right? The album has moved on the… MC: It’s on the 12th, April 12th. LR: Instead of the 22nd. So excited about it definitely. MC: Well you know what? They’re only moving it so that everybody can you know it’s gonna look like we have 19 songs, we have to narrow it down, and it’s really hard for us to pick and choose what we wanna keep, what we wanna not keep coz we’re all really attached. When I say "we" like the whole team that’s been working with me, L.A Reid and pretty much everybody I know that’s like been hearing the stuff. We’re like attached to all the songs in different ways but I can’t have 19 songs so you know we’re trying to just get it together. LR: How special is this album compared to all the other albums you’ve had in the past? MC: Well, I feel that it’s very special. I feel that it’s a really good step forward and I feel like you know I hope that the fans are really gonna like it. I think I have a good gauge on that but you know it’s really a fun moment for me and I think that everybody’s gonna feel that when they hear it. LR: For sure. Definitely. Every song you have out here you know all this love from fans ... spread the lambs for that matter. I just wanna know, like you seem really, really happy and content so that really it shows so that’s great. If happiness could be measured on a 1 to 10 scale, what happy scale are you in at the moment? MC: Well, actually like to be really honest, this particular moment, I’m just like ugh I’ve been doing interviews and I’m happy to be talking to the Lambs Radio. I wished I would have done the Lambs Radio first. LR: I’d love for you to do that. MC: I know but in general, I’m very happy Im just like you know I mean actually you don’t know because you don’t sit there and have people asking questions all day. But it’s cool. I’m happy because it’s a new project and I really want you know people to know about it and if all the people in the land that need to know about it. I’m happy to be talking to you so that you can communicate it on the Lambs Radio. LR: Thank you so much. You know it’s 2005 and it’s a brand new year for you. It’s been a great start for you definitely, so does Mariah have any New Year’s resolution? MC: Any New Year’s resolution? Just to make hot tamales! LR: I just had that last week. MC: What did you have last week? Tamale candies? LR: No just the regular tamale thing like wrapped in that brown thing. MC: You know I need to get that coz I keep on saying hot tamale but I never had one wrapped in a brown … LR: It’s easy … if you happen to drop by in L.A. and if you like stop by the studio, will give you some hot tamales. MC: I will, you know what? what if everybody’s started sending me hot tamales? LR: I know, that will happen soon. Better watch out for that. Here’s a hypothetical question for you. I know you’ve had all questions regarding your new album and stuff. I’ll give you a magical question here. So let’s say you were brought inside a magical room, everything and anything is possible, you can go back to the future or go back to the past or like whatever you choose, can you describe what’s inside that room and who are the people in it or how would that room appear to you? MC: My goodness… okay, Jack has to be there. We have to have water, haha. I don’t really know if it’s a room. LR: It’s like a fantasyland. MC: Okay so we open the door and the room is pink yet lavender. (laughs) it’s like a pink ceiling and lavender walls. And then it’s like open and it’s out to a sandy beach with crystal clear water and then I’ll just be in the ocean. I’m sorry I’m not that creative right now plus I’m like we’re like on the radio so that people that are not lambs can’t really get into to what I would really like I go on tangent with you guys. LR: ... All lambs are listening to the show. So they would definitely relate to what you’re saying. MC: I just… haha. You know what I’m saying. But, what else? That’s pretty good for them. They’re looking at me through the freaking door right now like you even know where I’m looking at. You’d be astonished but… By the way, everybody out there. I just wanna know. Have you seen the Elf? The movie Elf? LR: No I have not. I need to watch that. Everybody says it's such a good movie but I have not. MC: You have to see Elf, it’s really good and Mean Girls. LR: I have watched Mean Girls, I was dragged by my niece to watch that. MC: You didn’t like it? LR: No I liked it. It was like I wasn’t gonna watch this movie, but I watched it and it was fun. MC: Oh it's the best. You have to take it to the next level like to really appreciate it, it almost has to be like a cult moment, like you know it could be like The Rocky Horror Picture Show for you. You go everywhere and you can recite the whole thing. LR: Now it’s like everybody would want to borrow that DVD for sure or buy it because you said it's good. Last question because I know you’re in a hurry. MC: Yeah we gotta go. No go ahead. LR: I hope I can have another interview with you MC: Definitely, we have to set up an interview on a day when I don’t have to do fifty million other interviews so we can talk about fun stuff. LR: If you have a special message for all your fans out there like how supportive they are, so excited with the new album. MC: Yeah! Everybody out there that’s listening. You guys are the best and you definitely know, you have to know that I’m so grateful, like seriously I can’t even stress it enough because I know that everybody’s been requesting this song and so supportive and everybody out there should know we had an amazing day at radio today. And so everybody who’s been contributing to that, I thank you so much! Seriously, I can’t thank you enough. LR: Thank you Mariah. I appreciate your time. I know you’re in a hurry but thank you so much. MC: No, I feel so great that there’s a Lambs Radio. I love that. It’s great! So alright. They're yelling at me to go, the annoying man in the hat outside the door. Alright, annoying man, I’m coming. Lambs don't like you, annoying man in the hat. The Secret Life of Mariah Carey
//
1:16 PM EST Updated by Will
In his office, Island Def Jam chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid is playing tracks from the unfinished CD The Emancipation of Mimi. The volume is high. A Dyptique candle burns; the Mona Lisa screensaver on his 20” iMac smirks at him as he strides across the room, grinning madly as he plays air keyboards. “Isn’t it fantastic?” he asks as he dances. It is, of course, hard to take the head of a label seriously when he’s enthusing so wildly about his own product. What else is he going to do? But that aside, it’s clear that what we’re listening to is a return to form, of sorts. It may not be a ’90s vintage, multi-multi-platinum piece of finely honed diva pop. But it is a compulsively listenable collection of vibrant, self-assured, dare we say understated R&B songs. And hovering around the album, swooping in and out of each song, is the Voice. If it ever went away, it’s back. That sometimes-husky, sometimes-silky thing that is stretchier than elastic and yet simultaneously accurate to at least ten decimal places. It’s been a long journey for 34-year-old singer Mariah Carey. From her position as the MOR queen of the early ’90s, she cleverly reinvented herself in the second half of the decade as R&B’s first lady with a series of high-profile hip-hop collaborations. Financially, The Emancipation isn’t ever going to be the runaway 25-million seller that 1993’s Music Box was, but these are clearly songs from someone who’s as artistically sure-footed as she’s ever been. L.A. Reid leans across the desk. “The real thing I’ve learned about Mariah,” he says, “is that she’s an innocent. At heart, she’s a little child.” “Really?” says Blender skeptically. After selling tens of millions of records worldwide, after being married to one of the most powerful people in the record industry and dealing with some of the most hardnosed names in hip-hop, she’s a little child? “Yes,” insists Reid. “In spite of everything…” At the appointed time, Carey sweeps into Lure for our face-to-face interview. It’s a large but chic fish restaurant in Manhattan. The maitre d’ flutters. As always, Carey has a small retinue in tow. Her new manager, Benny Medina, who is never far away, places himself at the sort of distance that is tactful but still within eyebrow-raising distance. The same team was there last night, too, at the photo session, along with Jack, Carey’s Jack Russell. Then, Carey had been polite, deliberately un-popstar-like, inquiring, “How’s your hotel? And the weather where you’re from?” with the sort of solicitousness of one keen to avoid appearing too diva-esque. Tonight she’s taking time out from a last-minute session re-recording vocals for a track with Jermaine Dupri. She freely admits she hates doing interviews when she’s in what she calls her recording phase, but what can you do? Time clearly presses. Carey scans the menu, not wanting anything. She eventually picks a bowl of clam chowder, of which she will toy with three or four small spoonfuls. There are three things that every feature about Mariah Carey will mention: let’s get them out of the way: 1) At 18 she was spotted by Sony Music mogul Tommy Mottola; they married in 1993 and split four years later. 2) In 2001, shortly before the release of her flop movie Glitter, she had a very public breakdown, gabbling nonsensically on MTV before checking herself into rehab. 3) Famously, she has a five-octave range. (Actually it’s probably closer to four and a half, but even that’s technically pretty remarkable. Occasionally journalists will say she has a seven-octave range, but that would make her a cross between a bat and Paul Robeson.) Tonight, after the interview, she will return to the studio to complete work on her tenth studio album. What sets The Emancipation of Mimi apart from Carey’s discography is that it takes aboard the new spirit of R&B authenticity brought to the table by singers like Alicia Keys. Carey says much of it was recorded live, which makes it much more organic-sounding than anything she’s done before. She’d find herself picking up a riff from the guitar player, or singing a part for the horn players to repeat. “They hear where you’re going and they’ll take you to a place where you may not have gone.” The track “Say Something,” with Snoop Dogg, was recorded in L.A. with the Neptunes. “I love Snoop,” she says. Every time they meet, he tells her now much her debut single, “Vision of Love,” meant to him. “That’s, like, my song,” he says. He was in prison when he heard it. It was his favorite behind-bars tune. She likes to repeat Snoop’s anecdote. It underlines a point she is keen on making: As far as she’s concerned, right from the start, she’s always been an R&B singer. Her real home has always been urban America. In L.A., Snoop, Nelly, Pharrell Williams and she were all in the studio together. That in itself was a radical departure for Carey, who usually demands to be alone in the room when she sings. “So it was all of us hanging out, and it was really fun. It was probably like it was in the old days – like in the Motown era, you know what I mean?” Alongside the sessions in L.A. and Jermaine Dupri’s studio in Atlanta, much of Mimi was laid down in her preferred recording location of recent years, the posh Mediterranean island of Capri. “They leave me alone in Capri. The townspeople treat me like I was born there. It’s very ‘Ciao, Maria!’” She spends a lot of time there now. She’ll be there at the studio up at the top of the hill until six in the morning, watching the sun come up over the sea through the studio’s big glass windows. That’s where she recorded her favorite track on the album, the if-Motown-went-gospel soul of “Fly Like a Bird” – a song that sees her return to the full-on vocal backflips of the old days. It’s a spiritual song she dreamed up in the moments before she went to sleep one morning. She roused the studio back up so she could demo the tune. Later she recorded it properly, gazing out the Capri studio’s window, inspired by the sight of the clouds in the Mediterranean sky. Mariah is a night owl who usually sees mornings only from the wrong side. She’s never found sleeping easy. Exhaustion was one of the factors that contributed to her breakdown in 2001. “It’s still an issue with me,” she admits. “It’s not so bad. It’s a question of getting myself solidly balanced. But I’m much better at sleeping now because I have to be.” She’s learned to take regular breaks. She relaxes at home with her cat Willy D and the dog Jack, playing The Sims on her Mac or watching movies like Mean Girls. There are days she doesn’t speak. Friends call her and she doesn’t pick up. Instead she texts them: “I’m having a vocal rest.” She’s aware that it sounds ridiculous, especially when they answer mockingly, “That’s a good one. I’m having one tomorrow.” L.A. Reid said he thinks you’re happiest at Disney World on a roller coaster.“He did? Well, he asked me if I believed in Santa Claus.” Which of course you do.“I do.” The thing is, the Voice and Carey’s psyche are closely linked. In surprising ways, the Voice is a big part of who she is. “I feel like it’s always been my secret, my voice. Ever since I was little.” Like all the best stars, Carey had an unhappy childhood. She is the daughter of an Irish-American opera singer and a Venezuelan/African-American aeronautical engineer. There’s a photograph of her, age 3. She sometimes looks at it and recognizes the child’s eyes, but to her there’s something really sad in them. It’s as if, she says, “They’ve seen the horror.” It would have been taken at the time her parents were going through their split, which was acrimonious. Afterwards, Carey’s mom, Patricia, raised her. She lived with her brother Morgan, who was nine years older, and sister Alison, ten years older. As a child, Morgan was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Sister Alison became pregnant at 15, got involved with drugs and prostitution and contracted HIV. Carey says she saw “a lot of stuff around the house.” With her mother having to work long hours to support them, the older siblings would be left in charge, but Carey frequently found herself alone when her siblings bunked off. The radio kept her company. “Maybe I grew up a little too soon. I think I did. Maybe because of that, I held on to that beautiful quality of childhood.” She grew up insecure, uncertain of who she was. “Being biracial, not being pretty…having such a difficult upbringing in a lot of ways,” she says, “I don’t like to say that, because it sounds ‘woe is me’, but music brought me out of it.” In fact, she remembers exactly the moment when the Voice became an important part of who she was and – more important – who she was going to be. She was in first or second grade, walking along the street with her friend Maureen and singing a song from South Pacific – they were performing it in school. Mariah didn’t even notice Maureen had stopped singing along with her until she told Mariah, “When you sing it’s like there’s music that plays with your voice.” It was one of the first moments she ever started to feel confident in herself. From then on she convinced herself that the Voice would make her a star, would take her away from all this. She started listening to Morgan’s Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight records, wondering how Minnie Ripperton did that thing with her high notes. “This,” she told herself as she practiced, “is going to take me where I need to go.” Even later, in high school, when she wouldn’t even tell her school friends about it, or she’d even sing deliberately badly to disguise her talent, she’d know, “I’m just as good as everybody else. Because I have this secret. This gift. This thing I know they can’t do. You just wait.” Unbidden, a waiter brings some sushi. “That’s sweet! Thank you.” It sits on the table for a while. Because she was raised by her mother the opera singer, everyone assumes that’s where the Voice came from. But Mariah will remind you her black father grew up in the Pentecostal church. Indeed, her parents were married in the Mount Sinal Pentecostal church on Harlem’s 137th Street and Lenox Avenue. Her mother might have provided the genetic material, but gospel ran in Carey’s blood as well. So as she grew up turning in to the New York R&B station WBLS when she was left alone in the house, it all made sense to her. In fact, growing up with a white mother in a white neighborhood, the Voice was a way for her to rediscover her blackness. Seventy-five percent of the female contestants on American Idol try to emulate your vocal style. Are you aware that you’ve spawned a lot of truly terrible singers?She laughs. “I’m sorry about that,” she apologizes. “But I don’t really watch those shows.” You first hit the charts 15 years ago this year. There’s a new generation of female singers out there – Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan (one of her ex-husband Tommy Mottola’s signings). Do you ever wonder where you fit in?“I’ve never looked at myself as Top 40 artist – although other people did.” Your ex-husband, for instance?She laughs briefly, but ignores the bait. “I was an R&B singer first, and R&B fans are less about trends. When they love you, you have a fan base. Pop is a different thing.” So what advice would you give this new generation?“I don’t feel they need advice. They started in a different way from me – in a way that’s very foreign to me. I had to really struggle. I had a difficult childhood. Music was my solace. If you love it, do it. If you don’t love it, leave it alone.” We’d better eat some of this sushi. The chef will be mad at us if we don’t.“Yeah,” she agrees. She picks a single morsel of fish, dips it in the chili, and eats it. Last November she woke after sleeping 15 hours, tired from working late in Atlanta. When she picked up her pager, she saw all the messages. One was from urban music entrepreneur Damon Dash. “I’m sorry to have to tell you that ODB passed away.” Ol’ Dirty Bastard represented a crucial turning point in her career. In 1995 she was moving away from Tommy Mottola’s vision of her, figuring out who she could be by herself. It was Carey who insisted that he release a Sean Combs remix of “Fantasy” featuring Dirty, from the edgiest New York crew of the time, the Wu-Tang Clan. At the time, few of her audience would have ever heard of them, let alone ODB. Once and for all, the track cemented Carey’s links to the hip-hop community. It remains one of the greatest moments of her back catalogue. These days, as Carey acknowledges, the remix has eclipsed the original. “The classic now is the urban version. It’s one of my favorite records ever.” She loved ODB – the way he insisted on wearing a wig in the “Fantasy” video. He, too, was sort of innocent. “He was just into it, and present. He loved doing what he did. Even when he was clowning, he really took it seriously.” She met up with Dirty when he was released from prison in 2003. She feels he should have never been sent there. “I think that contributed to whatever it was that brought him down,” she says sadly. “It’s tough, because I feel that some people go through such deep stuff that it drives them to do things that are detrimental to their health. One thing leads to another, and it ends up killing them.” A waiter shimmers up to the table and suggests a glass of wine. Carey hesitates, declines. “If I had one, I’d be up all night. Maybe I should have some beverage – like cranberry or orange juice. How many calories would that be?” The waiter doesn’t know quite how to answer that one. Carey glances around. At the next table they’re drinking something pink. “That looks really good.” The waiter tells her they’re strawberry martinis. Carey’s face falls. In the end she requests a fruit juice and soda. In a little glass. With a straw. The biggest and best-known failure in Mariah Carey’s platinum career was the movie Glitter. It arrived at just the time when everyone was happy to see the great Mariah – the biggest-selling female artist of the ‘90s – fall flat on her face. She has given up trying too hard to defend the movie. “It was,” she now acknowledges, “all over the place. It’s one of those things that was thrown together. But it doesn’t matter, because it made me stronger.” The scale of its multimillion-dollar failure totally overshadowed the fact that her performance in the following year’s indie thriller Wisegirls was actually, well, pretty impressive. She plays a sassy waitress working in a mob-owned Italian restaurant. The movie gained her a standing ovation at Sundance, but she put her movie career on hold last year to work on The Emancipation of Mimi. The other consequence of that failure was that when the movie’s soundtrack album, Glitter, failed to match Carey’s previous track record, selling a mere two million, the company, Virgin, dropped her with a $28 million dollar payoff. Rumor No. 1: You’ve squandered all that money you were given by Virgin/EMI.“On what?" She says archly. You don’t have a personal yacht on Capri yet?“No. I’m a very practical person. I’m very conservative. That sort of thing makes me laugh. It’s so wild.” But people expect if of you.“Yeah. And I’m not saying I don’t buy diamonds. I just bought a new bracelet yesterday,” she says showing off the sizeable rocks that adorn her right wrist. “But I didn’t even used to buy the stuff until I learned that this” – she rattles the jewels – “is an investment. It could be in the bank but it’s on me. I haven’t bought a fleet of cars. I don’t know about cars.” So, rumor No. 2: You didn’t buy a $318,000 Mercedes Maybach the other day?“No! I do have a Mercedes, but living in New York I don’t care about what I roll in. For me it’s just a place to put my bag.” How un-diva-like.“I know. I’ll pretend for the sake of this article, though.” She buys shoes, of course. Too many to wear. But she says that’s because of the New York winter she spent wearing her mother’s size-too-small shoes and swearing that one day she’d have a whole room full of shoes. Which she does now. Rumor No. 3: You’re going out with a 28-year-old-employee of yours (who happens to be sitting two tables away right now with her manager). The Carey jaw drops for a second. There’s a rare flash of irritation. “Oh. Honestly! At this stage in my life, I’m not even getting into that stuff. I’m not getting tied down in any relationship.” Pause. Then, just in case we’re getting the wrong idea, “I don’t have casual flings either.” Benny Medina, her aforesaid manager, flits up to the table, checking if she’s OK. He sees she’s barely eaten a thing and suggests it would be a good idea to have some food before they return to the studio. It will be a long night. She tells him she wants to eat but doesn’t want to order in front of the Blender journalist because she doesn’t want us to know what she orders. You do stuff like that when you’re Mariah Carey. Carey likes to play the innocent. Of course, you wonder just how innocent someone can be who has fought so doggedly to get to where she wants, has earned millions, clearly has a canny business head and who has remained on top of her game for a decade and a half. Not that innocent. But she’s clearly in love with the idea of innocence. Which isn’t a surprise. It’s a compensation for having to grow up too young, first with her family and then again when as a teenager she started dating a man 20 years her elder. She has sung about that young girl growing up, trying to cling to innocence, on songs like “Petals” or “Close My Eyes.” But, curiously, listening to the new album, it’s clear there’s nothing about her childhood on it – except for the title itself, The Emancipation of Mimi. “Mimi” was a childhood nickname given her by friends and family. And that’s why it’s an emancipation. She doesn’t feel like writing those songs right now. This is happy Mariah. “This was really kind of ‘let me have some fun.’” It’s about realizing she’s free now. “I’m not saying anything negative about anybody from the past. I’m not dealing with an oppressive structure. Everything is OK. I’m making a record. This is fun. And this,” she says proudly, “is why I started singing.” The waiters start arriving with trays of succulent food, compliments of the chef. She thanks them warmly and profusely. And then departs, the food untouched. ______________________________________________________________

The Secret Life of Mariah Carey
//
3:03 PM EST Updated by Matt
Blender Magazine has posted a selected few of Mariah's photos and an article on their website. Click below for the images and text: She’s the super-private diva who doesn’t speak for days at a time. But, for Blender, Mariah Carey opens up about her “horrific” childhood, her friend ODB — and how to spend $28 million.By William Shaw, Blender, March 2005In his office, Island Def Jam chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid is playing tracks from the unfinished CD The Emancipation of Mimi. “In spite of everything…” To read more about Mariah's traumatic childhood, friendship with the Wu-Tang's ODB and what happened with Glitter, check out the March issue of Blender, on newsstands February 8!

Billboard Magazine Reviews "It's Like That": "Mariah Returns"
//
2:59 PM EST Updated by Liron
MARIAH CAREY - It's Like That Producer(s): Jermaine Dupri, Mariah Carey, Manuel Seal Writer(s): M. Carey, J. Dupri, M. Seal, J. Austin Publisher(s): BMI/ASCAP Genre: POP Label/Catalog Number: Island Def Jam 16251 (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: February 05, 2005
After years of underwhelming singles, Mariah Carey finally returns with a certifiably hot track. "It's Like That" is a sparse, bass-heavy, beat-driven cut that is primed for radio and dancefloors. For too long now, Carey's vocals have shifted between breathy near-mumbles ("Boy [I Need You]") and overwrought multilayered wails ("Through the Rain"). With "It's Like That," she goes back to basics. With a mostly straight-ahead delivery, Carey reminds us why we fell for her pipes in the first place. Granted, the selling point of the track here is the beat and its "let's party" message. Still, we'll take it. The single ends on just the right note: a roof-raising call-and-response chant ("Let's go now, what?!"). Carey's eighth studio album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," is due April 12.—KC ______________________________________________________________

Mariah to move to Britain?
//
1:10 AM EST Updated by Lynn
Pop beauty MARIAH CAREY is considering moving to Britain - if she enjoys her time in London where she'll be starring in West End musical THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL.
The GLITTER beauty will play MARILYN MONROE's celebrated movie character ELSIE MARINA in the stage show next year.
And she's reportedly planning to buy a house in Belgravia if she feels at home in London after her acting stint.
An insider tells British newspaper the DAILY MIRROR, "She'll be starring as Elsie Marina. And as she's likely to be here for several months, she's looking to buy a place in Belgravia. It has to have at least six bedrooms and it's fair to say that money is no object." ______________________________________________________________

Mariah's 'Mimi' Bumped To April
//
3:17 PM EST Updated by Will
Mariah Carey's next Island Def Jam studio album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," has been bumped to April 12 from its originally scheduled March 22 release date. As exclusively revealed here in November, Carey handled the bulk of the writing on the set and also produced the power ballad "Mine Again."
The Jermaine Dupri-produced first single "It's Like That" was last week's top debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 53, netting Carey her highest-debuting song on that chart in almost five years. The song also opened at No. 58 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks roundup. As a featured artist, Carey was in the R&B top 10 as recently as three weeks ago when "U Make Me Wanna" by Jadakiss featuring Carey peaked at No. 8.
A video for "It's Like That" will be shot next week by film director Brett Ratner ("Red Dragon," "Rush Hour").
The new album also features contributions from producers Kanye West and the Neptunes as well as rappers Nelly, Snoop Dogg and Twista. It's the follow-up to 2002's "Charmbracelet," which debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 1.1 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. ______________________________________________________________

Mariah Carey Set To Release "The Emancipation of Mimi" on April 12, 2005
//
3:17 PM EST Updated by Will
Mariah Carey, the best-selling female artist of all time, is set to release her highly anticipated album, The Emancipation of Mimi, on Island Def Jam. Already being heralded as one of the hottest releases of the year, the album is set to arrive in stores on April 12th (and one day earlier in territories outside the US).
The new single It's Like That (co-produced by über-producer Jermaine Dupri), which was officially released just yesterday, is already a top 20 hit on the Rhythm chart and this week's Hot Shot Debut on the Billboard Hot 100, with over 35 million in audience - all without the support of a music video! The music video will be shot next week by Hollywood A-list director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon).
Mariah Carey wrote and co-produced every song on the album, which features guest appearances by superstar artists Snoop Dogg, Nelly and Twista, and features production by The Neptunes, Kanye West and Jermaine Dupri. ______________________________________________________________

Mariah Carey Pushes Back Album, Films Music Video
//
9:14 PM EST Updated by Will
Mariah Carey has pushed back the release date of her tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, to April 12th. Originally set for March 22nd, the new three-week delay will apparently allow more time for Carey to put the finishing touches on the record and finalize its cover-art and packaging.
It will also create an apt moment to fully promote the record’s lead single “It’s Like That”, which, as of tomorrow, will officially be sent to radio stations nationwide. Carey is currently gearing up to film a music video for the single. Although she had initially met with director Paul Hunter to discuss possible treatments, the singer has chosen Brett Ratner, who helmed her $2.5 million “Heartbreaker” clip back in 1999, to direct her new music video.
The video is scheduled to be shot next week. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas will be the video’s central filming location. The resort was famously featured in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven, and infamously in Rick Salomon’s One Night In Paris.
The Emancipation of Mimi, which was entirely written and co-produced by Carey herself, will feature collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Nelly and Twista. ______________________________________________________________

New Radio Interviews
//
9:14 PM EST Updated by Will
HOT 99.5 FM - Washington, District of ColumbiaMariah Carey is back and hotter than ever! She's got her new single out and everyone who's anyone is talking about it! Check her out as she gets messy! Listen to the interview here. JAMN 94.5 FM - Boston, MassachussettsThe Ramiro and Pebbles Morning Show played their inteview with Mariah this morning. Stay tuned to ramiroandpebbles.com for audio. This is what they talked about: -- The last time they talked to Mariah was during the "Charmbracelet" era and claimed that Pebbles was the inspriation for the title. -- "The Emancipation of Mimi" album title and Mariah explained it, but Ramiro said its too deep for him to understand. -- Talked about how she went on tour and she said that was good for her voice and she "got in a good space vocally" and that "this record is vocally, the best work shes done in years by far". -- The making of the album and working closely with L.A. Reid and how this album is more about like just having fun and not having to deal with a lot of issues. And that nobody was telling her that she had to make a certain kind of record dealing with drama just so they could go on oprah and whatnot. With this album it was more fun and free. -- Her dog Jack and his websites, and how some people come to her concerts dressed up as Jack. -- This brought them to Mariah's fans and how dedicated they are, and the DJs were sayin that's a little weird and Ramiro said "you have the most pyschotic fans" and just how they defend Mariah no matter what. They were basically makin fun of the fans, but Mariah got defensive and said "well I think they just know that I actually do care about them" and "I'll stand up for them just as much as they stand up for me!" ______________________________________________________________

Mariah Gives Dog First Class Flight
//
4:54 AM EST Updated by Lynn
Pop beauty Mariah Carey was so lonely during a Los Angeles video shoot last week (ends 21 JAN 05) - she paid a staggering $2,850 (GBP1,500) to have her dog flown first class from New York to be with her.
The Glitter star was moved from a rented Hollywood Hills apartment into Los Angeles' Peninsula Hotel, after fears her forthcoming music demo would be hindered by recent floods.
But she was miserable in her suite, until her beloved Jack Russell, Jack arrived to keep her company later in the day, reports British newspaper The Sun.
An insider says, "Mariah felt the only thing that could comfort her was Jack. So he was flown in later the same day." ______________________________________________________________

Mariah works on "It's Like That" remix, leaves new voice message
//
2:22 PM EST Updated by Will
Mariah has left a new voice message for her fans over on her official website. Click here to listen, or read the transcript below: Hi! Hey lambs. Yeah, I had a whole big plan to leave a nice festive message with Trey and everyone from the studio, but we got carried away doing the remix for “It’s Like That”, but the good news is I think you’re going to like it. And the other news is that Trey ain’t here right now. I’m by myself. We all basically had to take some time and get some sleep because it was a long night in the studio. But anyway, I figured a little message by myself would be better than not calling at all, so I’m just calling you to say I love you, appreciate you, and enjoy you, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for just everything that’s going on with the single right now. I know you guys are really doing your thing out there and being extra, extra supportive as always. I can’t thank you enough. I’m so excited and so happy and I just wanted to let you know that hopefully soon, we will have a nice Big Nasty skit prepared for all of the Big Nasty fans. And I will be calling in as soon as I can make that happen, and if I can’t make it happen quick enough, I’ll just call you back and check in again. Okay, I love you much and will chat with you later. Bye, bye. ______________________________________________________________

Mariah in Magazines
//
3:02 AM EST Updated by Lynn
In In Touch Weekly, January 31st issue, Is It True?, page 37: Does Mariah believe that Marilyn Monroe haunts her piano? No. Songbird Mariah Carey is famous for her beautiful ballads, but a widely repeated story claims that a supernatural source was inspiring Mariah to write new songs on her piano - screen legend Marilyn Monroe! "It's as if the keys are haunted," Mariah supposedly said. Mariah's piano, the story reported, was once owned by Marilyn, who starred in such classic musicals as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and who died in 1962 at the age of 36. "The tunes just come thick and fast," Mariah reportedly said. "It must be inspired." However, reps for Mariah say the story, although quite funny, doesn't stand a ghost of a chance! "This story is definitely not true," Mariah's rep explains to In Touch. "She does own Marilyn's piano, but it's very old and delicate, and no one plays it - including Mariah!" In Us Weekly, January 31st issue, Fashion Police Extra - Hollywood Knit-mares!, page 96: Clearly, looking cool while staying warm may be simply impossible. What's worse: hat hair or the hats themselves? The knit-mares include Bjork, Britney Spears, Ashley Judd, Mariska Hargitay, Paris Hilton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Mariah. Here's what fashion cop Pescatelli says of Mariah: "Even Princess Leia hits the slopes!" In Heat magazine (UK), issue 305 dated January 28th, “What Were You Thinking?”: “Mariah, honey, take the hint. When there's snow on the ground, it means it’s cold out, and that half-acre of bare skin and plunging cleavage is probably not a wise idea. To borrow a phrase from Kate Moss, you'll have nipples like plumbers' thumbs. And we're not even going to mention the Dior moon boots.” ______________________________________________________________

-- From Fox News: When she [J.Lo] remade "I'm Real" with rapper Ja Rule, it was due to an inside tip from Tommy Mottola that Mariah Carey had done something similar with the same music sample. The "steal" upended Carey's plans for her ill-fated "Glitter" soundtrack. -- The rapper "The Game" of G-unit mentions Mariah in the song "Like Father Like Son." The only line in the song that mentions her is: "I'm feeling like Mariah Carey, all these butterflies, voices singing to me, sound like Teena Marie" -- Trevor Nelson, a UK DJ and a good friend of Mariah's has played "Say Something" on his show last night. You can hear the song on his show's website.-- According to Wikipedia, Mariah is #2 on the list of best selling music artists (including groups) worldwide, alltime with 195,000,000 copies of albums and singles sold. -- Mariah is on the cover of the "Military Press" newspaper. //
2:52 PM EST Updated by Liron
Here's a recap of Mariah's interviews round today on American radio stations. If you are able to record an interview to the computer or write a transcript of it, please send it to us! The Morning Show, KTU 103.5, New York, NYMariah called in to KTU's morning show at approximately 7:30 am EST and spoke to the DJs for about 10 minutes. She said her favorite song off the album was a new collaboration with JD, called "We Belong Together." She was asked why is she seen alone in pictures and said "Well, What can I do about it? I'm not alone, my dog's there!" Mariah said she will be shooting the video to "It's Like That" this week and next week and after that she'll come back to New York to promote the album. She promised the DJs at KTU that she will actually come into the studio the next time. Request Line: (800) 245-1035 Russ Parr Morning Show, syndicated nationwideMariah called to the show at approximately 8:25 am EST and spoke to Russ for a couple of minutes. Mariah started talking about the process of recording "It's Like That". She said that they were in the studio until 6 am. She said she doesn’t get any sleep when she’s in Atlanta and then laughed. She talked about another song that JD and her did together called "We Belong Together”. It is a mid-tempo ballad. She talked about JD knowing her as an artist and a person. Russ said he was critical of some of her music because some songs sounded alike. He said that this joint doesn’t sound like anything she’s done. She talked about the Neptunes tracks also being different for her. The girl asked what she thought about people with hit records that can’t sing cause Mariah can sing! She said that she has a lot of friends that are really talented and don’t have record deals. Russ said she sounds happy. He said he liked Glitter and saw it 3-4 times. He talked about people being critical even before they saw it. They asked about her supposedly playing a boxer in a movie and she said that it's on and off the table but that she's definitely doing the broadway Christmas show. All the girls in the studio sang "Vision of Love". Mariah was laughing and said, "Do I get publishing from this???" The girl asked if there was love in her lifeand Mariah said: “Love should be in everybody’s life”. The girl said, "You're gorgeous, talented, have a great body – you should have anybody you want." Mariah just said, “Thanks”. She spoke of the passing of ODB and said that it was really shocking and people come up to her and still sing “Me and Mariah...”. She said she’s going to miss him. She said that "It's Like That" is her favorite record in years and that working with LA Reid is a blessing. Russ said he went to private premiere of "Charmbracelet" and mentioned all of the fans there. He said she’s so sweet and how she will come and sit beside you just to talk. He said there is another side of her that people don’t understand. She reminded that "The Emancipation of Mimi" is out on March 22 and that the single is out now. Russ said that people were calling in about the single saying “I like that”! And she said, “Well, I like that!” Eddie & Jobo Morning Show, B96 Chicago, ILMariah called into B96 at approximately 8:35 am (Central). She mentioned how she has taken pictures for the album but has not decided which one will be the cover yet. She said that the pictures were tastefully done and that the cover will be "appropriate." Eddie & JoBo asked her if she was in a relationship and in love. She said 'Yes! All I will say is that I'm in a happy place right now, surrounded by cool and awesome people'. L.A Reid has asked Mariah to record with Jermaine Dupri again, and that's how they came up with "It's Like That" and the album cut "We Belong Together". She said that Jermaine and her discussed that they had to work on some songs for the album but how they probably wouldn't be as good as their previous work. Fortunately, the results were pleasing. She then talked about her party in Las Vegas and how she wanted to see as many fans as possible. Then she talked about the new CD and that right now she is sequencing it. She said there is a good mix of ballads and uptempos, but the ballads are not overproduced which she feels has been done in the past. She is really excited about the collaborations and LA Reid gave her a lot of control. She discussed her insecurities back when she was in high school and how it is an endless process. She also discussed her trip to Aspen and how she is a hip-hop fan. Request Line: (312) 591-9696 Kiss 103.5 FM, Chicago, ILMariah called the show at approximately 9:30 am (Central). The DJ told her that she looks hot on the cover of Blender magazine, and Mariah asked “Is that out yet?” The DJ then told Mariah that Paris Hilton is afraid of butterflies. Mariah laughed and said she only became a butterfly fan after writing "Butterfly" because everyone started giving her butterfly things. Mariah said that the album track came out as a leak and she was excited because now DJs are playing it. She said that she is very tight with her fans. The DJ commented on her the New Year's voicemail she left on her site and played it. Mariah said: "Is that me?" She said she wasn’t drunk yet when she left that message. When asked, Mariah laughed and said she was not going to Donald Trump's wedding. She talked about the major rainfall that happened during the last time she was in L.A and that the house she'd rented was flooded. The DJ said he loved "Wisegirls" and Mariah said she loved making the movie and she loves Mira Sorvino. She continued to say she wants to get back into making Indie films and being able to be creative with her part. She talked about being casted to "Wisegirls" after the producer saw her on the Rosie O'Donnell show speaking in her Long Island accent and Mira Sorvino made the producers call Mariah for the Raychel part. Mariah then talked about her Broadway musical in New York. As well as performing her songs off the Christmas album, she said she is writing new songs for the musical and she’s going to be on Broadway by Christmas. The DJ said: “You’ve dominated pop music since the 90”s”! Mariah said: “It’s Like That" is a party record and everyone should have a good time! The interview ended and the DJ played "It's Like That." Request Line: (312) 591-1035 "Ryan on Air", KIIS 102.7 FM, Los Angeles, CAMariah called in at approximately 8:30am PST and talked to Ryan Seacrest for about 8 minutes. They discussed the following things: -- "It's Like That" early release to the radio - Mariah was pleasantly surprised at the positive feedback and that many stations were playing the song prior to its official impact date (January 24th). -- The nickname "Mimi" - Mariah clarified that she was not changing her name and that "Mimi" was just a fun nickname. -- "The Emancipation of Mimi" - Mariah said that the album is very personal and has a lot of depth but at the same time it's a party album and very fun to listen to. She mentioned how great it was to work with L.A Reid. -- Producers she collaborated with - Mariah said that all the collaborations just naturally came together and didn't need much planning ahead. She explained that she never charges money for her guest appearances, but if someone is a writer on a song, they get money from publishing rights. She joked and said she couldn't write the rap and sing it by herself. -- Randy Jackson - Mariah said he's a great person who has worked with her and has been in her band from the very beginning. She watched him on "American Idol" last night and said she's happy she did not have to take part in such a competition as she loves the songwriting process and the studio work so this kind of show would not have been something for her. But she still admires these young people as the situation is nerve-wrecking. Click here to download an audio file of the interview. Here are two more clips from the interview (click and wait for the stream to load): clip 1, clip 2. Request Line: (800) 520-1027 Upcoming Radio Interviews:Z100 100.3 FM, New York, NYMariah called in to Z100 today and spoke to Shelly. "It's Like That" named Hot Shot Debut, opens at No. 53 on Billboard Hot 100
//
11:30 PM EST Updated by Will
After Mariah Carey’s physical breakdown four years ago, the subsequent flop of her movie and soundtrack Glitter, and the bevy of bad press that followed, the one-time reigning “princess of pop” was put in a unique, albeit tough, position both career-wise and personally.
Although Glitter, the edgy and upbeat soundtrack album, was generally celebrated among critics (Rolling Stone dubbed the concept record “a big step forward in terms of maturity”), the negative reviews for the banal and downtrodden film of the same name were harsh enough to send Carey into the opposite musical direction.
The result was 2002’s Charmbracelet, a mellow and mostly un-inventive release touted as a return-to-form to the superdiva’s mid-1990 balladeering days. The album was introduced with “Through The Rain”, a conventional and sparsely-produced tune about overcoming adversity. Carey’s record label undoubtedly thought the inspirational ditty would remind listeners of past hits like 1993’s “Hero”, but the music industry’s acceptance of swooping ballads had greatly changed, and the single stalled at an unimpressive No. 81 on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 singles chart.
Though Charmbracelet certainly had its standout moments, the record’s follow-up singles “Boy (I Need You)” and “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak” faced an even worse fate than “Through The Rain” at radio outlets, receiving minimal play and little fanfare. Things were certainly looking bleak for the once-invincible songstress, but Carey took the setbacks with stride and is now finding herself on the brink of a major comeback.
Just a little over two weeks since its premiere at radio, Carey’s new single “It’s Like That” has accumulated more airplay than all of Charmbracelet’s singles combined. This has merited the singer the title of Billboard’s Hot Shot Debut, where “It’s Like That” makes its bow at No. 53 on the Hot 100 singles chart. Over on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart, the tune moves to No. 44 after debuting last week at No. 58, the highest new entry for the singer in more than five years.
“It’s Like That” is the first single from Carey’s forthcoming Island/Def Jam album release The Emancipation of Mimi. She co-produced the single with long-time collaborator Jermaine Dupri, who recently hosted a mix session for Carey’s album with engineer Phil Tan at Silent Sound Studios in Atlanta. The record is due in stores March 22. ______________________________________________________________

Frank's New Year's Eve with Mariah
//
7:10 PM EST Updated by Liron
Here are Frank's story and pictures from the night of December 31st, 2004 where he met Mariah at "Pure" club in Las Vegas. "Fortunately I was able to attend the grand opening of Pure in Las Vegas. Mariah arrived there around 11:40pm, she let the crowd know that she was there, and really got everyone hyped, "It's New Year's, well not yet..." she said, then every minute from then on she said "ten minutes, etc. She shook hands with people in the crowd, drank champagne, and did a toast at midnight. Another highlight of the night (as if seeing Mariah on New Year's wasn't enough) was hearing her premiere the new song "It's Like That." Shortly after midnight, she went up to the roof top to see the fire works, but had missed them. When 12:30am rolled around, she went back down to the main room in the club were she was hanging with Trey, Rachel, Jasmine, nephew Sean, and cousin Velensia, there were a few other people from her entourage including Marc. Around 1:00am, fellow Mariah fan Alex, aka Aladerri, found his way to Mariah's private room, while there, he told her that Frank is from Chicago, the one you met on Oprah is here and wants to see you, that is when I was invited back by Mariah. It was an amazing night that I will never forget, I got to give Mariah a fan book and some pictures that I had taken of her. She left the club at around 3:30am after a fun-filled night with friends, family & fans."

That’s why I cringed when I saw her name on the CD when I opened the mail this week. BUT, as all good Music Directors do I listened anyway and couldn’t believe it, the song was THE JAM. Mariah Enjoys Chart Success
//
7:35 AM EST Updated by Liron
Mariah Carey has her highest new entry on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks in more than five years, thanks to the No. 58 debut of "It's Like That" (MonarC/Island). The last time Carey had a higher opening number was in September 1999, when "Heartbreaker" bowed at No. 33.
In its first week, "It's Like That" is already Carey's highest-charting song as a lead artist since October 2001, when "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)" went to No. 42. As a featured artist, Carey was in the R&B top 10 as recently as three weeks ago. "U Make Me Wanna" by Jadakiss featuring Carey peaked at No. 8. ______________________________________________________________

Mariah, An Inspiration To Many
//
6:21 PM EST Updated by Liron
-- From Broadway World:As Brooklyn, the Musical released its original cast recording entitled “Brooklyn: Live!” we checked in with the show’s belting star, Eden Espinosa:"As I got older, Debbie Gibson was my idol when I was 10, she really cinched it for me as a pop singer, and I wanted to be a recording artist before I ever wanted to be in theater. I think I really started the whole belt thing when Mariah Carey came out, because I never heard anyone as young as she was sing like her. I’d just try to emulate everything that she did in my room until I got it right, so she had a great influence on me too when I was young.” -- From the MetroWest Daily News: Ally Matteodo, Tracy Nygard and Anne Freund will perform tonight in the finals of Boston's first official musical talent search: "Indy Production's Search for a Superstar." At the Sorenson Performing Arts Center at Babson College, Matteodo will sing Mariah Carey's "Hero" for the fighting soldiers in Iraq. She admires their courage for helping to instill democracy. "To leave everything they know and go to a place that is uncertain, be fighting for something greater and give people something we have taken for granted in America that's why they are heroes and why the song is appropriate," said the songstress. ______________________________________________________________

Mariah in Magazines
//
4:36 AM EST Updated by Lynn
In Entertainment Weekly, January 21st issue with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell on the cover, page 52, 2005 Forecast in Music: When Island Def Jam chief L.A. Reid invited EW over to preview tracks from the new Mariah Carey album, The Emancipation of Mimi, he danced around his Manhattan corner office, fists raised in the air in celebration. “I don’t know if you can tell,” he grinned, mid-spin, “but I’m really happy with it.” So is Carey, whose previous two discs suffered on the sales rack (her doomed Glitter soundtrack led to EMI buying her out of her contract for a reported $28 million in 2002). With her 10th studio CD, the five-octave singer is trying to refocus her vision of love with the help of superstar producers like Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, and man of the moment, Kanye West. Carey hopes the upbeat disc, which includes guest appearances by Snoop and Twista, among others, will have a broad appeal. “I know that my hardcore fans will have the ballads that they can cling to,” she says, “but people who haven’t been fans in the past will be able to pick out songs they like as well. It’s not formulaic. I’m one of those people who likes to stay with what’s familiar, but what was cool with this project was stretching.” That newfound sense of liberation is reflected by Emancipation’s title (“Mimi” has long been a nickname used by Carey’s closest friends and family). When the name of the album leaked to the press late last year, tongues wagged that Carey was pulling a P. Diddy. “A lot of people were like, ‘Uh-oh, is she changing her name!?’” she laughs. “There was this whole big drama. I’m like, It’s really not that deep. It’s what I felt like expressing at that moment.” |
In Star, January 24th issue, page 78, Star Style & Error, Puffy Coats - The Good: Aspen regular Mariah kept warm and toasty in a basic black puffy jacket and super-cool moonboots both from Dior by John Galliano. In People, Photo Special, Photo #9: For Mariah Carey (left, in New York City in June; right, in L.A. in September) to undergo a style transformation, she has to learn how to balance her body. "If you're going to show a lot on top, don't show a lot on bottom," advises Weiss. And, suggests Bloch, "More clothes, less skin. Stop cutting every gown into a minidress. You don't have to always show cleavage." Below are additional scans from New York Post, New York Daily News, and Life and Style. "It's Like That" makes Billboard charts
//
8:20 PM EST Updated by Will
Mariah's new single has made its first impact on the Billboard charts. In the January 22 issue, "It's Like That" debuts at #58 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks tally, and just misses the Hot 100 by debuting at #4 on the Bubbling Under chart ("It's Like That" would be #104 if the Hot 100 chart included more than 100 entries.) ______________________________________________________________

Jasmine's Juice
//
3:15 PM EST Updated by Will
The following report was written by Mariah's friend and MTV News reporter Jasmine Dotiwala: My Christmas was unforgettable for many reasons. It was once again glamorous, rural, festive and it made me acknowledge how blessed we are. I spent the holidays with my Christmas cousin, Mariah, who (as only she can) does-it in style. On Christmas Eve I did a triple trudge across the Atlantic from London to Chicago to Denver to snow-covered, bourgeois Aspen where MC’s driver scooped me straight up and off to meet the fam’ who were all waiting for me at our table at Nobu. (Yep – there’s a Nobu in every stoosh location in the world!) After dinner we explored our house on our private mountain. Yes, we even had a mountain to ourselves (how bling-blow is dat?) which was on top of the highest peak and surrounded by snowy, majestic mountains. I gasped for breath every morning as I sat up in my bed, mesmerised by the panoramic, 360-degree postcard-view! Check out the snowman me ’n’ Mariah made. Christmas Day was like something out of a storybook. We all had pancakes and waffles with fresh fruit and hot scotch toddies before settling in front of the biggest tree in the house (there were five) to open our pressies. Mine included a jasmine-scented candle; brown suede, Gucci, knee-high boots; a Manolo Blahnik shoe horn; a fluffy bathrobe; the usual awful tacky Christmas knickers (why?); nice-naughty underwear; Ugg slippers; a Gucci purse; white, cashmere mittens and loads of naughty hip-hop board games which I can’t imagine why I got. Everyone insisted it was ’cos of my crazy hysterical obsession last year with Ghettopoly. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing hip-hop knowledge games accompanied by lots of screaming and joy. I then took MC’s 12-year-old-Jack Russell terrier, Jackson P Mutley, for his daily sprint up the mountain where we watched little rich kids sledging in the ice and tried to stop Jack from fighting the reindeer which are a million times bigger and more dangerous than him. (I guess it’s true what they say about pets being like their owners – Jack’s sure got gallons of attitude and won’t be put down!) We had ’nuff fun getting dressed in our various ensembles for the traditional American Christmas dinner where we wore long, glamorous gowns and had two turkeys, sweet potato, mash, ham, stuffing, rice, black beans and my favourite… butternut squash soup. After sneaking in the obligatory lil’ nap to recuperate, we got dressed for our Christmas party in town, showing up in a horse-drawn carriage no less – as you do. In the house were hip-hop mogul Steve Stoute; Eminem’s boss and Interscope head Jimmy Lovine; Denise Rich; Diandra Douglas (Michael Douglas’s ex);-and a hot African American actor who was very attentive to me but un-namable in case I bump into him again. Also in town for Xmas were Will Smith and his family; former US tennis star Chris Evert; Martina Navratilova; actor Kevin Costner and the old playboy actor and legend Jack Nicholson. For more on our New Years Eve party watch this space. ______________________________________________________________

Carey Comeback: It's Like That
//
8:57 PM EST Updated by Will
It's a project that's endured more than one false start, but it seems the Mariah Carey comeback is finally kicking into gear. After internet piracy saw two of her newly recorded tracks circulate around the world via chat rooms and message boards, the 34-year-old singer/songwriter has finally unveiled a track that she's ready for the world to hear.
'It's Like That', an up-tempo, club-orientated r'n'b groove, is already picking up considerable US airplay, after debuting earlier this week, and it's being acclaimed by industry insiders as the comeback record the chart-topping diva's being looking for.
The track's now set to be the first single from Carey's cryptically titled new album 'The Emanciaption of Mimi', due for release in March, which apparently mixes 80s flavoured retro grooves with Gladys Knight-style soul balladry. With the album, the follow-up to 2002's 'Charmbracelet', being seen within the industry as crucial for Carey, the singer and her label Island Def Jam are clearly determined to succeed. Production work comes courtesy of long-term collaborator Jermaine Dupri, who helped fashion previous Carey hits such as 'Always Be My Baby', while Carey is currently talking promo video concepts with director Paul Hunter, who has worked with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Brandy and Lenny Kravitz, and directed Mariah in the James Bond flavoured 'Honey' video.
For those who prefer a club-orientated Carey, there's further good news. House supremo David Morales recently revealed that he's been working with Carey on re-sung vocals for a house remix of her latest single. The partnership has previously produced highly acclaimed re-workings of hits such as 'Dreamlover', 'Fantasy' and 'My All'.
Meanwhile, 'Say Something', the Snoop Dogg duet Carey previously intended as the lead-off single from the project, before an unintended internet leak, is strongly tipped to be the follow up single after gaining positive reviews.
If March still seems too far off, you can get your Mariah fix later this month when her 1995 'Fantasy: Live At Madison Square Garden' concert finally gains a DVD release on the 24th. ______________________________________________________________

"Ladies Night" To Start Shooting In May
//
9:49 AM EST Updated by Liron
LEE DANIELS says he's "relieved and really happy that we've finally given birth again."
"I have the stretch marks to prove it," says the Wynnefield native, producer, of "The Woodsman," which premieres Wednesday at the Annenberg Center.
Daniels says the film, directed by fellow homegirl Nicole Kassell, was "a test of wills to prove the Hollywood system wrong."
It's about a sex offender (Center City's Kevin Bacon) dealing with life after prison. It doesn't humanize pedophiles, says Daniels, but instead tells a story of abuse that affects many Americans.
Daniels is still editing "Shadowboxer," which filmed here over the summer.
Next up, he says, is a musical called "Ladies Night," to start filming here in May.
"It's like 'Waiting to Exhale' meets 'Chicago' meets animation," says Daniels.
He says he's cast Indian actress Aishwarya Rai, Mo'Nique, Macy Gray, Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, and Patti LaBelle and hopes to cast Beyonce. ______________________________________________________________

Watch out, dummy
//
6:26 PM EST Updated by Liron
Mariah Carey reportedly had a run-in with another dummy at the Gucci boutique in Aspen. A source told Star magazine that the singer leaned against one of the store's mannequins assuming it was anchored in place (which it wasn't) and nearly hit a fellow shopper. Luckily, a salesperson saw the mannequin falling and was able to catch it before it hurt anyone. ______________________________________________________________

Mariah Carey soars with "It's Like That"
//
7:40 PM EST Updated by Will
Mariah Carey’s never been one to cede the spotlight to fellow singers and she refused to be overshadowed again this week when the singer’s team leaked her latest single, “It’s Like That,” to radio one day after Jennifer Lopez’ “Get Right” hit the airwaves. The release of Carey’s single, from her forthcoming album, The Emancipation of Mimi, came as a surprise since most expected the singer to release “Say Something” to radio on January 25. Both “Say Something” and “Tonight” (featuring Pharrell) had been leaked via the Internet in early December. Carey’s new album will hit store shelves March 22. The album includes production from The Neptunes, Kanye West, R. Kelly, and Jermaine Dupri. "For the first time in my life, I feel free and unashamed to be who I really am," Carey said. "I am celebrating that I've grown into a person and artist who no longer feels imprisoned by my insecurities ... I can now honestly say, 'This is me, the real me, take it or leave it.” "It's Like That," aired first on Hot 97 in New York City. Since the leak, over 40 stations have begun playing the track which is getting a great response. The singer is planning to shoot the video with director Paul Hunter. "I'm actually in L.A, getting ready to meet with Paul Hunter, who you know, did ‘Honey’ with me a long time ago and did the ‘Drop It Like It's Hot’ video," she told DJ Angie Martinez. Carey is also launching the fashion line Kiss Kiss next year, planning to pen a series of children’s books and plans to take on Broadway. The Emancipation of Mimi, will be her first album since the release of Charmbracelet in 2002. Visit "2005 GV Music & Fashion Awards Voting Booth", to vote for Mariah Carey. ______________________________________________________________

AM: I thought I was gonna get the "Please hold for Mariah"... MC: No darling, I dialed myself! AM: Oh she's so fabulous and so regular at the same time! Of course, the fabulous superstar Mariah Carey is on the telephone. MC: *laughs* Happy new year! Happy new year, Merry Christmas, everything! AM: What did you do for new year's? MC: Well I was in Aspen for Christmas, and that was very fun, very festive and then.. AM: Hold on hold on please, because I am picturing you in Aspen, and I'm picturing the fury boots... MC: The fury boots, yes AM: With a heel probably MC: *laughs* How do you know this?? You know, I had the regular boots that don't have the heels too, you know. AM: I haven't seen you in flats ever! MC: I know but when they're like the skate boot type thing, it's okay because they give you a little lift anyway. AM: O.K, O.K... MC: But your baby's adorable, everyone says the baby is gorgeous! AM: Thank you, thank you! he's getting so big. MC: He is SO gorgeous. He is so cute. AM: I did good, right? MC: You really did! And she's so skinny, I'm like "how did that happen?" AM: Coz I didn't eat for four months after I had the baby, that's what I did. MC: *laughs* He is gorgeous. AM: So what about you? what's the plan? what are we doing? Do we have an album date? Do we have.. what? MC: Album is like March 22nd, I believe, and umm you know, just getting ready to do the video and stuff. AM: Did you have a treatment and everything? MC: Yeah, I'm going to have a meeting right now, I'm actually in L.A, getting ready to meet with Paul Hunter, who you know, did "Honey" with me a long time ago and did the "Drop It Like It's Hot" video. AM: I know you're in L.A, I'm glad you called coz I definitely wanted to just let everyone know what's going on. We played your song yesterday, we're going to rock it today, we got Remy Martin coming a little bit later. MC: Ooh tell her I said hey, she came to my Halloween party and you know the "Ante Up" remix is my favorite and her section would be my favorite as well. I told her that at the Halloween party, I don't know if she believed me. AM: I would love to see you reciting Remy's verse on "Ante Up". MC: You don't want me to sing it, I request it everywhere I go, they're like... "what?" AM: I need to know, do you know Remy's verse word for word? MC: Yes I do! It begins with "I catch it backstage" *laughs* Yes we know and love Remy's verse. AM: Listen, will you come up please before the album so we can do like a real sit down and you talk to people and all that? MC: Definitely, I would love to coz I really wanna play you know, play a few songs, because I know like, you know, there's gonna be like those ballads and stuff like that that people are probably like expecting, but we just wanted to go with a fun uptempo record that's just what I was feeling at the time. AM: I heard you got a crazy Snoop record too, that is the word on the streets. MC: Mmmhmm, Snoop and Pharrell, yep. AM: So we'll make a day of it, you'll come by, we'll play a couple of songs? MC: Exactly, show me some more pictures of the baby... AM: I will! We'll have balloons, we'll bring champagne, we'll make it a party, we'll make it festive for you. MC: You know how I do... it will be very festive, exactly. "Just an Illusion" - New Title or just Sample?
//
12:16 PM EST Updated by Liron
According to a new article in the Latin magazine Prensa Latina, a song titled "Just an Illusion" will be featured on Mariah's new album "The Emancipation of Mimi." This title was previously mentioned on the Billboard article about the new album, stating that "Get Your Number" samples the 80s hit "Just an Illusion." Here is a rough translation of the article: The American singer Mariah Carey, one of the most popular voices in her country, has announced today that in March of 2005, she will put out a new CD, the first one in two years, named "The emancipation of Mimi". In the album, the "Hero" singer will go back to her roots of pop and rythym and blues, which will mix with the hip-hop genre. "It is a very personal CD in which I wrote and produced the majority of the tracks," she said. "More importantly," she said, "this CD reflects how much I have grown as a person and how I left behind my insecurities, I feel free." For "The emancipation of Mimi", she was supported by A-list collaborators such as the rappers Nelly, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg, who accompanies her in the first single "Say something". She's also received the aid of the producers The Neptunes and Kanye West. The album, with over 10 tracks, includes songs like "Get Your Number," "Just an Illusion," "Shake you Off" and "Mine Again," a beautiful ballad written by the singer. As you know by now, Mariah rang in the New Year and premiered her new single, reportedly titled "My Night", at Club Pure in Las Vegas. Brad Catoe, who sent the pictures above, was lucky enough to meet her at the event. "I got to sneak backstage and chat with her! She was nice as usual and being her divalicious self. I enjoyed myself so much and hope to see her again." David Vader, a Mariah impersonator who goes by the name "Bianca Nunez", also met Mariah. "She signed my fuschia, sparkly Steve Madden heels! It was the only thing I had and thought for sure a nice stiletto would get her attention. Mariah was so nice, dancing up a storm and drinking wine. I was right there next to her. I had a supernice New Years at Pure, which by the way is as gorgeous as Mariah herself." -- About.com is conducting a poll which asks the question: “Who makes your champagne bubbly -- even after the party's over?” Choices are: Linkin Park, Elvis, Eminem, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Las Vegas lounge singers in general, Gwen Stefani, 50 Cent, Missy Elliot, Clay Aiken. Click here to vote. --Mariah’s comment in an interview with Access Hollywood at her Thanksgiving dinner has made the list of San Francisco Chronicle’s “The Things They Said In 2004, Celebrity Quotes From The Year That Was”: "I do actually cook. I don't really use an apron when I cook, though. I do cook in high heels." -- Mariah Carey insists she isn't a diva. --From Washington Post: A few years ago, around the time her deliriously bad movie "Glitter" tanked, Mariah Carey pulled some pretty loopy stuff in public and was finally shut away by her handlers, who sent out the news: She was exhausted. Here, finally, was the great diagnosis of our era, with just a whiff of "Valley of the Dolls" enigma around it: It's all too much -- the jetting around, the boutique hotels, the sound checks, the lip-syncing, the modeling, the acting, the eponymous lines of beauty products, the reality cameras and press photographers and Internet gossipers that seem to be everywhere. Who wouldn't be exhausted? --From Guam PDN: At just 18 years old, Rachelle Ann Go already has garnered the title of Grand Champion of Search for A Star 2004. With a voice that's been compared to Mariah Carey's, she has gained popularity with her cover of Carey's "Through the Rain." ______________________________________________________________
