"U Make Me Wanna" continues fall on Billboard // 12:19 PM EST Updated by Will

Jadakiss and Mariah's single "U Make Me Wanna" continues it's chart decline. In its 8th week on the Billboard Hot 100, the track falls another place to #24 after fallling two places from its peak position of #21 to #23 last week.

On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles tally, it falls five spot to #14 (it is also #14 on the R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart), and falls one spot to #10 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. Please continue to request the song on your local radio station.

Blinging Joy To Mariah // 8:43 AM EST Updated by Liron

She has developed a bizarre habit of turning up to parties in full bridal gear and it looks as though Mariah Carey's hint-dropping has paid off.

The singer received a £260,000 diamond necklace as a Christmas present from a mystery suitor, along with a note saying: 'I want to spend my life with you.'

A source close to the warbler confides: 'Mariah is in Aspen with family and friends and, on Christmas Day, she was shocked when a package arrived addressed 'To my butterfly, MC' - a reference to her mega 1997 CD.

'Inside was a huge diamond-encrusted platinum pendant in the shape of a butterfly. But the note was the biggest surprise - especially as she has no clue who it was from.'

Mariah, 34, who is launching a range of sexy lingerie next year, is apparently 'desperate' to track down her minted admirer.

The source continues: 'She's a single girl and obviously any man who goes to that much effort to surprise her has to be worth meeting.'

We'll say...

News Tidbits // 3:39 AM EST Updated by Lynn

--On BET’s 106 & Park last night, Free sent a message out to Mariah to send her some free Lingerie and that Mariah should come and do a fashion show on 106 & Park for her Lingerie line. Mariah’s new CD due out in early 2005 was also mentioned.

-- Check out the new Mariah e-card greetings for the New Year on Butterflies Are Free.

-- Wild Writings has named Mariah one of the best dressed people for 2004!

-- Please vote for "Say Something" on the famous Australian radio station Hot 30.

-- Mariah was mentioned in Slant Magazine's review for Kelly Clarkson's new album:

"Though her rocky leanings were hinted at on the less coherent Thankful, Clarkson has always cited Mariah Carey as a primary influence and she still owes a lot to that former powerhouse—vocally, Clarkson tears it up. In a way, Breakaway is what Mariah might sound like if she ever decided to rock out."

-- Mariah song "Vision Of Love" is featured on Time Life's new Ultimate Love Song Collection. The compilation CD has other songs like Celine Dion's "Power of Love", All 4 One's "I Swear" and Luther Vandross's "Here and Now". The album can be purchased through Time Life's website.

-- Mariah's "Merry Christmas" album came in at #4 on E!'s top 10 Christmas Albums. Jamie Foxx, Paris Hilton, Reese Witherspoon and other celebrities commented about the album and how much they loved it.

-- Mariah tops the Rolling Stone's news briefs: "Drop the ball with Mimi: MARIAH CAREY will be in Las Vegas hosting the opening of Caesars Palace new nightclub, Pure, on New Year's Eve."

-- From Everything Cleveland: Apparently, the Colorado hot spot was the Christmas spot for celebs, including "I, Robot" star Will Smith and his lovely wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Especially if you wanted to be the Grinch to your fellow hobnobbers. Case in point: Smith and his entourage were invited to Mariah Carey's swankfest at Aspen's Sky Hotel. Being wary of actually coming in contact with real people, even if they were invited riff-raff, Smith had someone call ahead and make sure that a fourth of the bar was reserved for his posse. Huffy guests were moved, and the area was cleared. Would've been nice, then, if Smith, et al had shown up . . . which they didn't.

-- From Canoe: The 'P. Diddy Repackaged Goods' Slammy:
Jointly awarded to Madonna (who hates the nickname Madge and wants to be called Esther), Jennifer Lopez (who nixed J.Lo and wants to be called Lola), Mariah Carey (who favours the nickname Mimi) and Janet Jackson (who put out an album as Damita Jo, as opposed to, say, P. Titty).

--From Seattle PI: Mariah Carey, for starters, arrived with 14 trunks (we don't know about you, but 14 trunks could hold all of our worldly possessions as well as those of all immediate family members).

--From NWI Times: Comedian Rob Stapleton also caught the attention of hip-hop impresario Damon Dash, who recruited him to portray Jay-Z in the Dash-directed comedy "Death of a Dynasty." The film, which chronicles the fall of Dash's Rock-a-Fella Records and features cameos by Jay-Z, Mariah Carey and "Sopranos" Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Lorraine Bracco, to name just a few, debuted last year at New York's Tribeca Film Festival, and is expected to hit theaters in early 2005.

--From The Star Malaysia: Malaysia didn’t lag that far behind in the concert scene. Chart busting US alternative rock outfit Hoobastank, as well as Alicia Keys, Incubus, Black Eyed Peas, Mariah Carey, Hanson, Gareth Gates, Blue, Bellefire and Guy Sebastian joined the ranks of illustrious international artistes that performed live in Kuala Lumpur this year.

--From New York Times: Egos on Wheels. This formula, simple and infinitely repeatable, has proved so successful that among young viewers, the ratings for "Pimp," in its second season, have zoomed past all the other car programs, and the show has inspired two knockoffs. One is "Ride With Funkmaster Flex" (Saturdays on Spike), a magazine-style show, more music-intensive, in which the Funkmaster, a hip-hop D.J., travels around, inspects some customizing and gets to ride shotgun in the lavishly appointed vehicles of pop stars like Ashanti and Mariah Carey.

--From The Daily Star: Worth noting is that a huge number of international musicians from all genres visited the Arab region this year. From Mariah Carey in Beirut and Dubai in February to the massive-selling British boy band Blue - beloved by teens everywhere, and playing to 20,000 in Egypt in the summer - and it is a wonder to think that politically the Arab region is in such a violent and depressing mess, viewed as a seething dangerous mass of keffayeh-ed terrorists by so many.

--From Metroactive: Last season's American Idol auditions yielded the usual crop of Mariah Carey overemoters. So it was with giddy surprise that William Hung appeared on the tube and immediately crossed over into the public consciousness. With his bad voice, buck-toothed grin and awkward dance moves, Hung slaughtered Ricky Martin's "She Bangs."

News Tidbits // 12:04 PM EST Updated by Will

-- On December 19, we announced the tentative titles of two new songs Mariah recorded with producer Mahogany: "Sprung" and "Feeling It". Now, we have a little more information regarding the tracks. Our source describes them as "straight up hip-hop and R&B; something Jay-Z would rap over." The source also says Mariah is "throwing it down" vocally.

-- From Philadelphia Inquirer: Maybe the high altitude made everyone's blood run a little loopy in Aspen this year. Even perennially nice guy Will Smith made Mariah Carey's "naughty" list when he pulled rank at her swanky Christmas bash at the Sky Hotel's sleek 39 Degrees lounge.

Smith insisted one-fourth of the entire bar be reserved for him, his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and their posse, according to the New York Post, despite grumblings from dozens of guests invited by Carey who were booted from their bar stools and told to move. Then, of course, Smith and Co. never showed. Humbug!

-- From New York Daily: This year, Star magzine's growing specialty was very candid camera. The redesigned weekly had its biggest newsstand sale in the first half of 2004 with "Best & Worst Beach Bodies," showing curvy Mariah Carey (best) and once-curvy Jerry Hall (worst). It was such a hit that Star all but duplicated the cover a few weeks later. "Busts & Butts!" again featured shapely Carey opposite another fleshy backside in a white bikini, this one belonging to Britney Spears.

-- From Pop and Politics: ODB always seemed to be having fun and therefore his music was fun. His appeal crossed over into the world of pop when he was a guest on Mariah Carey’s #1 single, “Fantasy.” It was on this track that ODB delivered one of the most memorable song lines of the 90s: “Me and Mariah go back like babies and pacifiers.”

-- From BBC News: Band Aid 20's charity hit "Do They Know It's Christmas" has topped the download charts for another week, raising loads more money for people in Africa. Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was up two to five.

More Mariah in Aspen // 10:50 PM EST Updated by Will

-- Here are high-quality photos of Mariah in Aspen, Colorado. Click each thumbnail for a larger, full-scale view.

-- From People Magazine: Snow honey Mariah Carey stays hot in Hollywood's favorite winter wonderland, Aspen, where she skipped the slopes Christmas Eve to do some shopping.

-- From New York Daily News: Aspen's New Year's party week kicked off with a bang last night at gala parties thrown by Chopard and Bulgari. Mariah Carey was spotted arriving in town (with a mere 14 trunks) to join the likes of Kate Hudson and family, Jack Nicholson, Kevin and Christine Costner, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Katie Couric and Owen and Luke Wilson.

-- From Daily Star: Mariah Carey enjoyed her "apres ski" with female friends in Aspen, Colorado. Loud laughter was coming from their table at the exclusive Cache Cache restaurant. The 34-year-old singer says the resort is "romantic." We'll keep our fingers crossed that the busty babe gets lucky.

-- From New York Post: Elsewhere in Aspen, there was little good will toward Will Smith at Mariah Carey's packed Christmas party in the Sky Hotel's sleek 39 Degrees lounge. Smith's people called ahead "to make sure that one-fourth of the entire bar was reserved for him, Jada Pinkett-Smith and their posse," says our source. "They wanted it held open all night long." The request was granted despite grumblings from dozens of invited guests who were immediately uprooted and sat in less desirable corners. Their "Botox Martinis" (a house special) tasted even more sour when Smith and his entourage failed to show up.

-- From Daily Star: We have to hand it to Mariah Carey for cheering up fed-up punters in a post-Christmas queue at the trendy Aspen ski resort in Colorado. The bootilicious blonde took it upon herself to walk around warbling away. But at least it made her fellow snow-seekers smile. And no matter that the temperatures were of the brass monkey variety. Ms. Carey, 34, made sure that plenty of flesh was on display in case the world had forgotten her splended assets. As if...

Mariah named 3rd Worst Rock-Star Actor Of All Time // 10:50 PM EST Updated by Will

When singers become actors, the results are not always high art. That's the thinking behind Blender magazine's list of the 25 worst rock-star actors of all time.

Madonna tops the list. Bob Dylan is second, followed by Mariah Carey.

Of the melismatically trilling queen of Long Island, Blender says, "Neither her appearance as an opera star in The Bachelor or as a zonky homeowner on MTV Cribs prepared the public for Glitter, the semiautobiographical masterpiece of bloated pop-diva vanity. The movie bombed, the soundtrack tanked and Carey snapped, handing out Popsicles on TRL before retreating from public for a rest-cure."

Carey's worst on-screen moment? In Glitter, of course, thirty-six minutes in, when after their first date, Carey, in bed with sweaty boyfriend, says, "I just have a little bit of a tough time trusting people."

All He Wants For Christmas // 10:49 PM EST Updated by Will

Hi Fred,
As a big Mariah Carey fan, I regretted when "All I Want for Christmas Is You" wasn't commercially released in the United States in 1994. I think it was one of the first Mariah Carey songs [that wasn't eligible for] the Hot 100 without official single release.

After Billboard introduced airplay-based tracks on the Hot 100 at the end of nineties, the song appeared briefly on the chart during the Christmas season in 1999-2000, [peaking at No. 83].

I am glad to see that airplay and download sales are confirming the strong demand for this single. Seeing a 10-year-old song competing at No. 6 on the Hot Digital Tracks chart next to current hot stars like Nelly, Destiny's Child and Kelly Clarkson leads to my only question: What might have been its highest position in 1994, if it had been released as a single at that time?

Martin Caslavka

Dear Martin,
"All I Want for Christmas Is You" is one of my favorite Mariah Carey songs, including all of her non-holiday material. I love the Phil Spector-like production and Mariah's energetic vocals.

While I'm glad that the song is still popular after a decade, there's no way to say with any certainty what position it would have reached on the Hot 100 had it been eligible to chart in 1994. As you know, there was a single issued in the United Kingdom and it peaked at No. 2, making it one of Mariah's biggest British hits.

-- Yahoo France is polling its viewers on who the best singer is. Mariah is currently ranked at #22, while Britney Spears takes the #1 slot. Please show your support by voting at yahoo.com.

-- After being ridiculously left off VH1's retrospective series "I Love The 90's", Mariah will be featured on the follow-up show, "I Love the 90's Part 2", for the years 1990 and 1995. Click here for the airing schedule.

-- Sam Goody is now reserving Mariah's new album, "The Emancipation of Mimi". The reservation number is 12000020 and it will only cost $2.00 to hold one. As of right now you have to go into a store to do this but you can do it at Sam Goody, Media Play, and On Cue. Let's all go out and show advance support for this album to aide in it becoming a success!

-- Mariah was featured on Extra, an entertainment program, last night. They were talking about the recent Walt Disney Christmas Parade in which Mariah performed. They featured a brief interview with Mariah, which was filmed the day of the parade. She said (in regards to singing "All I Want For Christmas Is You" at the event), "It means a lot to me to see the crowd singing a song I wrote over 10 years ago."

-- In the year-end issue of Billboard magazine, Mariah's "Through The Rain" was named #22 in the Dance Singles of the Year tally.

-- From Newsday: Convinced she was destined to become a rock star, Mariah Carey missed so many classes while attending Harborfields High School in Greenlawn that she earned the nickname "Mirage." In 1987, Carey moved to New York City the day after graduation to pursue a singing career and she soon became a back-up singer for Brenda K. Starr. Carey’s prediction about her inevitable stardom soon came true: she signed with Columbia Records the following year, going on to become the biggest-selling female recording artist of the 1990’s, with over 120 million album sales worldwide. Carey released her latest CD, "Charmbracelet," in December 2002.

Mariah Daily's Winter Style Report // 4:03 PM EST Updated by Will

Every quarter, Mariah Daily posts tips on how you can buy Mariah's latest fashions and duplicate her style for the current season. The report for winter 2004 can be found below. Be sure to check out our Mariah Style section for additional fashion tips and links.

With temperatures dropping to all sorts of lows and winter weather becoming an ever-increasing hassle, it is no wonder that most people just want to stay inside and keep warm. Realistically, however, we know that we have to leave the house at some point, so you might as well do so in style – Mariah style!

While Mariah is enjoying her Christmas break in the winter wonderland known as Aspen, Colorado, she buttons up just enough to avoid catching cold. Her coat, insulated boots, and custom jeans help to achieve that. Although Mariah has been known to spend thousands of dollars on high-fashion ski apparel, such as her Christian Dior moon boots, you can achieve the same look for much less. Here are some suggestions:

The obvious standout of Mariah’s outfit is her vintage Barbie tee. You can purchase the exact same product at Nordstrom Clothing for only $25 – on sale from its list price of $40!

Also at Nordstrom, you’ll be able to find a pink rabbit fur jacket – faux fur, of course, for $98. It is a good substitute for Mariah’s $2,000 Dior jacket, but if you’re looking for something a little less furry, shop for the Houndstooth wool jacket, available in pink or black, also for $98 at Nordstrom.

If you have to brave the snow and ice this year, try the Sporto “Alissa” waterproof boot, marked down from $60 to $51 at JC Penney. Complete the ensemble by throwing on your favorite dark-washed stretch jeans (such as DKNY’s Downtown jean).

If you’re into wearing sunglasses at night, Mariah’s boxed-glasses are called Bagles and are made by the trendy Blinde Company. They’re $215, though, so you might want to start saving up, or just simply find knockoffs at your local shopping mall.

All I Want For Christmas: Songstress Mariah Carey Planning a Holiday Broadway Show for 2005 // 7:53 PM EST Updated by Will

While her seasonal "All I Want For Christmas Is You" plays on the radio again and the songstress prepares to headline the ABC's "Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade," Mariah Carey is looking to a Christmas future on Broadway.

The artist reveals her plans for a "Broadway show for Christmas 2005" in a release for the upcoming Christmas Day special airing on ABC-TV at 1 PM (ET.) Check your local listings.

MTV News reports that the project is in its early development, but plans are underway for the singer to "create, produce and star in an annual Christmas musical, according to her label publicist."

Carey rose to fame in the 90's, blending the upper-register trills of her five octave scale into pop hits like "Vision of Love," "Someday" and "I Don't Wanna Cry." Since her 1990 self-titled debut, the singer had hit #1 on the singles charts so many times, her label released a compilation in 1998 titled simply "#1's," featuring over a dozen of her chart-toppers. Carey released her "Merry Christmas" holiday album in 1994 featuring the original song "All I Want For Christmas Is You" which continues to garner airplay during every holiday season — it is currently one of iTunes' top ten most downloaded songs.

Other songs by the diva include "Honey," "Always Be My Baby," "One Sweet Day" (with Boyz II Men), "When You Believe (The Prince of Egypt)" (with Whitney Houston), "Fantasy," "Hero," "Dream Lover" and "Heartbreaker." Her forays into film acting include the features "The Bachelor" and "Glitter."

This December saw holiday shows of two vocalists — both already familiar to the Broadway audiences — with Jekyll & Hyde star Linda Eder's The Holiday Concert and former Into The Woods witch Vanessa Williams' Silver & Gold both at the Palace Theatre.

For more information on Carey, visit her official website at www.mariahcarey.com.

In Star magazine dated January 3, 2005, Mariah is featured in a two-page spread with the heading "Mariah’s Christmas Special":

Mariah Carey is celebrating Christmas Disney-style this year! The pop superstar took a break from recording her new album, The Emancipation of Mimi, due out March 22, to perform “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and “Joy To The World” for Disney World’s 21st Annual Christmas Day Parade TV special. She taped the show, which airs Christmas day on ABC, on Dec. 5. As if that wasn’t enough to put her in a holiday mood, Mariah’s already at work on a Broadway Christmas show for next year! But the busy singer, 34, is still making time to do her holiday shopping. “I don’t want to give anything away,” she says, “but I bought my dog [a Jack Russell terrier] Jack lots of toys!”

"Say Something" shelved as first single from 'Mimi' // 1:41 PM EST Updated by Liron

According to Universal Music Italy, Mariah's first single from her upcoming album has been replaced and will no longer be "Say Something". It is reported that Mariah is still recording her album under the supervision of label executive L.A. Reid, and is possibly recording a new song that will be the lead single, which will supposedly premiere around January 14, 2005. The date is subject to change.

One rumored theory suggests that the new single will be a newly-recorded song produced by Jermaine Dupri. Earlier in the year, Jermaine told MTV News that he and Mariah had tracked two songs together. Yesterday, however, he announced that he and Mariah had done four songs together.

Last month, Mariah told fans at a Fresh Air Fund benefit that she would be traveling to Atlanta to finish the album. Jermaine Dupri's studios, of course, are located in Atlanta.

News Tidbits // 5:27 AM EST Updated by Lynn

--The current issue of Blender magazine with Snoop Dogg on the cover shows a preview of next month’s issue with Mariah on its cover! Be sure to check it out!

--In People’s year-end issue, O.D.B. is in the 'Tributes' section for those who died in 2004. The quote for him is by Mariah: "My friend had a sound and a style that was truly unique."

--From Chart Attack: The pop-diva holiday record benchmark is still held by Mariah Carey's 1994, er, "gift," Merry Christmas, but ReJoyce still gives us something we didn't expect: a Jessica Simpson record that's actually good.

--From Oconomowoc Focus: With all the classic, the new, the secular and the religious holiday songs in play, the Oconomowoc Focus set out to ask area residents what makes their best and worst lists. Focus reporter Jonna Clark admits to secretly liking Mariah Carey's, "All I Want for Christmas is You." She said it is a guilty pleasure similar to reading a tabloid while in line at the grocery store.

--From Windy City Media Group: We wade through some unnecessary rush releases pushed under our noses for the Christmas market in dread, while visions of next year’s new releases dance in our heads. 2005 will bring us new material from the likes of Erasure, Madonna, Billy Idol, the Pet Shop Boys, Tina Turner, Texas and Mariah Carey.

--From AllHipHop: Mark Ronson: "I think it’s sort of a joke. Six or seven years ago, I started DJ’ing a places that were sorta model-y and stuff. They would only play House music or Club music at that time. Every Tuesday, the hottest club in New York at the time, Life, would say, ‘Mark Ronson and his random music is ruining our VIP room. Now Damon Dash and Jay-Z and Puffy and Mariah Carey wanna come and bring their people with them.’ So, now it’s come completely full circle. The people that are going out now don’t really have the history of the music, and they don’t even care. These guys just want to hear Ja Rule and Ashanti and that’s about it. "

Sources close to the star have blabbed to the papes that she has designed a range of swanky tights, some of which have real diamonds embedded in them.

One of them told the Mirror: "Mariah is bringing out a range of hosiery called Mariah Kiss Kiss next year. As part of this range she's designed some diamante-encrusted, old-fashioned stockings, but for her closest pals she's had some made up with real diamonds."

The bad news is that the diamond tights cost a whopping £15,000 a pair, so if you are considering getting some for that special popstrel in your life make sure you're gonna get more than a Mariah Kiss Kiss in return!

"Say Something" officially premieres on radio // 2:02 PM EST Updated by Will

Mariah's forthcoming single “Say Something” featuring Snoop Dogg has received it's official radio premiere. Los Angeles-based station Power 106 has been playing the track for the last week. According to those who are tuning in, the station has dubbed the song a “Power 106 exclusive”. Also, reports suggest that the version being played on air is apparently different from the audio file that was leaked onto the internet several weeks ago. “It is better,” said one listener. Another commented, “The beat sounds harder, and the synth track that runs thoughout the song is faded down, and Mariah's voice sounds clearer.” Mariah’s friend and producer Damion “Damizza” Young serves as the senior director of artist relations and programming for the station.

In related news, “Tonight”, a song that was prematurely leaked from Mariah’s new album, has also been receiving play on Greek’s biggest radio station, Star97 FM. The song has been included in their weekly top 30 chart, entering at number 29.

Looks like Mariah Carey is still hung up on her ex, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. But she has some stiff competition: Derek has made a connection with starlet-of-the-moment Scarlett Johansson! Mariah went to Derek sister’s Sharlee’s birthday party at the Manhattan club Hue, but the Yankee hunk was a no-show. “He was out of town with his new woman, which is surprising since he and sister are so close,” a source tells In Touch. Mariah spent the night chilling with Sharlee and toasted the birthday girl at midnight with a glass of Everglo, a glow-in-the-dark liqueur. It turns out Derek, who’s also been linked lately with with MTV VJ Vanessa Minnillo, was out in LA, where he and Scarlett attended the Microsoft Christmas party at the hot new nightspot Geisha House. Witnesses said the two stayed by each other’s sides and flirted all night. Some reports even said that they left the party together.

Totaling Mariah // 3:49 PM EST Updated by Liron

    Question: Hi Keith,

I thoroughly enjoy reading your column every week and you certainly impress me with a lot of the questions you are able to answer.

I have always wondered what are the sales totals for all of Mariah Carey's albums? I have heard so many different things, but I would like you to set the record straight. Also, could you contrast that with the former diva, Whitney Houston. Yes, "former!"

    Thanks so much,

    Billboard's Answer: Hi John,

Oh, you're just trying to get Whitney fans upset with you, right? I think it's still safe to say that Houston is still a diva, as is Carey.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Mariah Carey has sold 43 million albums in the United States. Because the company began tracking sales information in 1991, that means some of the sales of her breakthrough self-titled debut are not included in the overall number as "Mariah Carey" was released in the summer of 1990.

Houston's SoundScan-era releases, along with the sales of both the soundtracks to "The Preacher's Wife" and "The Bodyguard," total 17.4 million in U.S. sales.

If you also consider 1985's "Whitney Houston" and 1987's "Whitney" -- certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for 22 million units shipped in the United States -- her total would be around 39.4 million.

Mariah Carey chillin' at the Canal Room // 8:27 PM EST Updated by Will

You may remember that on Saturday, December 4, the New York Post reported news that Mariah was seen leaving the Canal Room with Andre Harrell in New York as two fans got into a fight over a photo of her and got themselves arrested.

Well, to your right is a picture, taken by industry photographer Walik Goshorn, of Mariah posing with a fan at the event in question. Looks like she is a bit kinder to those who know how to control themselves. Click the thumbnail for a larger, full-scale view.
