Can't wait to see Mariah Carey naked in Playboy? Sorry, you won't. The voluptuous singer is set to appear on the March cover, but she didn't pose nude. "They are outtakes from an album cover shoot," said an insider.

Mariah in South Africa // 12:57 PM EST Updated by Maggie

US talkshow host Oprah Winfrey was in South Africa to throw a New Year's Eve party at the plush Sun City casino resort that was to be attended by some top Hollywood celebrities, according to news reports yesterday.

Winfrey, who has set up a leadership school for girls and made several previous visits to the country, was seen at the resort north west of Johannesburg yesterday, the Sunday Times newspaper reported.

Some of her guests, including actor Sidney Poitier, comedian Chris Rock and singers Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige were also spotted enjoying breakfast there, according to the report.

Most of the guests are believed to have jetted into the country on Friday for a weekend at the 5,000 rand ($A1,141) a night resort with the wealthy talkshow host who reportedly paid for everything except the flights.

Local media reported that details of the New Year's Eve function were wrapped in secrecy amid tight security at Sun City, which is part of the Sun International group.

Mariah Miscellaneous // 2:47 PM EST Updated by Maggie

  • American Idol host Ryan Seacrest hopes to get a kiss from Christina Aguilera this year. "Last year I got lucky with Mariah (Carey)," he said," so hopefully at that moment she's right there."

  • Mariah was ranked #10 in the Yahoo! Top Celebrity searches of 2006. Click here to see the full list.

  • X-Factor contestant Leona Lewis has been gaining a lot of buzz lately after Simon Cowell and others have frequently compared her to Mariah. Below are some of the highlights from the X-Factor episodes where the judges describe Leona as the "next Mariah Carey":

    Chiquitita performance:
Louie: "Leona, you always do a good job. I thought last week you're absolutely brilliant. Tonight(however, in a negative tone), it was a little bit like Mariah Carey singing an Abba song."
    Audience: "Boo"
Leona barged in and said, "Mariah Carey is a brilliant artist!"
Simon, defending Mariah, in a sarcastic tone: "Leona, I love Louie saying you sound like Mariah Carey as a negative (smirk)... that's terrible."

    I'll Be There performance:
Louie: "Hey Leona, what a fantastic way to end the first round! You know, You're a great singer, you're a class act, you look fantastic, you know. Only word of caution, don't oversing like Mariah Carey or Christina, be your own voice 'cause you have the talent to be fantastic. Well done!"
Simon, defending Leona and Mariah: "Leona, everything you heard from Sharon and Louie actually is irrelevant. And I tell you why, because it is very rare in this country that somebody like you comes along because you are special. And that's what it's all about. AND LOUIE, WITH THE GREATEST OF RESPECT, I DON'T THINK YOU'RE IN THE POSITION TONIGHT TO ADVISE ON VOCALS."

    All By Myself performance:
Louie:"That was an amazing, emotional, and a powerful performance! And you're the first girl I've heard in UK that I can compare with Celine Dion, MARIAH CAREY, and Christina"

    Without You performance:
Louie: "After that performance, I think UK has found itself a new kind of Mariah Carey/Celine Dion, something we haven't had for a very, very long time"

Mary Carey Comments on the Lawsuit // 2:20 PM EST Updated by Maggie

TMZ.com has a new video of Mary Carey tellling reporters how she feels about Mariah's lawsuit.
TMZ caught up with porn star Mary Carey last night outside of Koi restaurant, where Mary was knocking back a few to get over the papers filed against her by near-namesake Mariah Carey.

Apparently, Mimi doesn't like getting confused with Mary and has opposed Mary's request to trademark the name. Mary says Mariah is "Crazy! She's Crazy! Mary's my name!"

While TMZ cameras rolled, Mary fielded a phone call informing her that one of her spurned "stalkers" has issued a press release in support of Mariah. Her bubbly attitude seemed to burst.

The PR Inside has an article discussing the "truth" behind Mary Carey according to her friend Mark J. Behar.

Lambs: Will NOT Be Silenced // 12:10 AM EST Updated by Maggie

Mariah fans are included in Blender's Rock's Awesomely Demented Fans:

Mariah's Lambs are more than just devoted fans-- they're a support group she counts on to ride out the valleys in her roller-coaster career. Carey recently admitted to getting through the tough times by poring over the elaborate scrapbooks that fans have sent her, and the Lambs also organize campaigns to undermind her pop rival Madonna. They stuck with her even after her disastrous 2001 biopic Glitter, and in 2006 launched "The Glitter Project," a plan to buy multiple copies of the accompanying album and shoot the commercial dud to the top of the charts on Mariah's birthday, five years after its release (they failed).

Justify your love: "Mariah knows how to touch people through her music," says Tahiana D'egmont, a 21-year-old marketing coordinator who runs a fan site. "After she touches you like that, it's impossible not to form an attachment to her."

Mariah Takes on Porn Star // 10:21 PM EST Updated by Maggie

TheSmokingGun.com has posted a copy of the legal filing Mariah's company, Automatic Princess Holdings, has filed against adult entertainment star Mary Carey.

After threatening legal action to protect her valuable name from an encroaching porn star, Mariah Carey yesterday filed a formal opposition to the bid by actress (and former California gubernatorial candidate) Mary Carey to trademark her stage name. In a notice filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the pop singer's company, Automatic Princess Holdings, argues that Mary Carey's bid to trademark her name for use in adult films, DVDs, cassettes, computer programs, and other commercial endeavors is likely to result in confusion for the consumer.

The public, Mariah Carey contends, is "likely to mistakenly associate the goods offered" by Mary Carey--whose real name is Mary Cook--with the performer's "goods and services." The December 27 notice of opposition, a copy of which you'll find below, requests that Mary Carey's trademark attempt be rejected by USPTO officials.

Mary Carey, 26, has appeared in films like "Hot Showers 6" and "Lesbian Big Boob Bangeroo 2," and received 11,000 votes in her 2003 election won by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mariah Carey, 36, is, as her filing notes, "a world-famous singer, musical performer, and celebrity." She also appeared in the 2001 film "Glitter."

Diana Ross Would Love to Give Mariah Singing Lessons // 10:19 PM EST Updated by Maggie

Diana Ross would love to give Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera singing lessons.

The music legend is very impressed by the current crop of female singers and insists she would be happy to give up her time to educate any of them privately.

She said: "I enjoy Beyoncé's music and admire Alicia Keyes, Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey. I'm ready to give advice and support to any of them that wants that. Because Mariah used to ask when I would spend time with her, I am available to discuss what it takes."

The 62-year-old singer says one thing the younger divas could learn from her is how to be a true professional.

She said: "I am an extremely organised person. I think I have a good work ethic."

Mariah-Oh-Meter: Rate Her Snow Look! // 8:42 PM EST Updated by Maggie

  • People.com: In pure Mariah style, the singer braved the snowiest night in Aspen Wednesday to party with friends and family. Carey kept warm in a very tight leather jacket, second-skin black pants, high heels and dark oversized shades. (So what if it was at nighttime -- and snowing?!). We love how delicately she carries her glass of champagne through the flurries. What a trooper! On a scale of One being Congresswoman conservative, and Ten being ready for her video vixen close-up, we'd give this look a Six. Afterall, she's gonna get a serious draft unless she zips up more! Tell us: On a scale of one to Ten, how would you rate Mariah's oh-factor in this look? To see more Mariah in "Off the Rack" click here.

  • NY Daily News: Mariah Carey, who's in Aspen now to host a party for Aspen Peak magazine, is getting in some fun before starting production next month on "Tennessee." She plays a country-and-Western singer. Producer Lee Daniels tells us, "I think she could have a country crossover career. I'm hoping she'll write a couple of songs for the movie." Meanwhile, Daniels is celebrating the success of his movie "Shadowboxer," which has become one of the top indie DVD releases of 2006. It stars Oscar nominee Helen Mirren.

  • MTV News: Mariah Carey plans a roll in the snow. She told local publication Aspen Peak that while she won't be skiing much, she does have some festive plans for the cold powder. "I'm not a great skier at all," she said in the magazine's winter issue. "I take one run and ski in an outfit that's cute." So why Aspen? "I love having a white Christmas. I love the vibe of Aspen. ... I have a sense of feeling at home there." When in the snowy, mile-high town, Carey plans to do as the Aspenites do — or at least as she's been told they do. "I like to get out of the hot tub and roll in the snow. Someone told me that was a tradition in Aspen, but maybe they were lying to me. It's a tradition for us to have Santa Claus-looking bikinis, jump in the hot tub and roll in the fresh snow."

  • Rocky Mountain News: Mariah Carey plans to host an invite-only Boxing Day party at the Hotel Jerome on Dec. 26 to talk about her new CD and part in the movie Tennessee.

  • Below are some high-quality photos of Mariah in Aspen on Wednesday, December 20th, 2006. Many thanks to Mariah Connection for the pictures.

Leona Will be the Next Mariah // 1:21 PM EST Updated by Casey

The X Factor queen has what it takes to break the States...

Leona Lewis, X Factor's first female winner, is being lined up to steal Mariah Carey's crown.

Simon Cowell has revealed Clive Davis, the chief of J Records in the US (home to Alicia Keys and Whitney Houston among others) has told him he wants to make the gorgeous 21-year-old with the enormous pipes a huge star on the other side of the pond.

Simon said, "Leona has a commitment to go and see Clive. It's an amazing opportunity. I believe she'll be up there with Mariah and Whitney. It's a fairytale ending."

Which means we could be seeing lovely Le, like Mariah, linking up with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg in future.

After scooping 60% of the votes and winning a £1million record deal during Saturday's final, Leona has since admitted she came close to jacking a singing career in all together.

"I was so down at getting nowhere that I was about to give it all up and then I had one more chance - the X Factor audition," she said.

"Now look at what there is for me, it's almost too much to take in. I wanna do this for the rest of my life."

Ahh.. Let's just hope Leona never goes all Carey-style diva on us...

Memoir of a Beauty School Dropout? // 9:36 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey's manager, Benny Medina, is pitching a lifestyle type book cum pseudo memoir titled "500 Hours." These are the hours Mariah ostensibly went to beauty school just for the heck of it and she now intends to turn her experience into literature. Well, maybe not literature, but at the very least -- valuable tips.

    From Chart Beat Chat:

  • Call out the "Ghostbusters!" Beyonce doesn't seem to have any "Superstition" about the number 13 because the 13-letter "Irreplaceable" breaks a six-way tie for the longest single word title to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100. That must be an "Unbelievable" "Heartbreaker" for the six acts that used to share that record with 12-letter one-word titles. But Beyonce can take some "Satisfaction" that she was part one of those acts on Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious."

  • Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" made it to No. 1 on the Hot 100 this week and that rewrites chart history. In terms of female songwriters, Beyonce moves ahead of Janet Jackson and Carole King and is tied for third place with Diane Warren for nine No. 1s. Madonna is credited with 10 and Mariah Carey has 16.

Now that "Irreplaceable" has ascended to the top, Beyonce has received songwriting credit for three songs in the same calendar year. The only other women to do that are Mariah Carey (in 1991) and Carole King (in 1971). Quite an accomplishment in a business dominated by men!

  • Kire Veljanovski from Macedonia asks:
I'm familiar with the fact that Christmas albums and singles which are old [are not eligible for] the current charts, but I don't see why they aren't. If the charts should be a representation of what is popular and true in the music biz, why shouldn't seasonal albums count when in fact they are popular, even if it may be for three or four weeks?

For example, why shouldn't Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" be eligible to chart even for a few weeks?

Last year it was No. 1 on the digital chart and surely would have had a great chart position on the Hot 100. The song is popular and in my opinion everything that the public buys or likes should be noted.

Fred Bronson of Billboard's Chart Beat Chat answers:
I realize that from the point of view of a chart fan, or a fan of a specific artist like Mariah Carey, it seems unfair that a song like "All I Want for Christmas Is You" isn't eligible to chart on the Hot 100.

And that prompts me to repeat something I've said many times in this column: the main purpose of the charts is to serve the music business. They are a tool for the industry so record companies, radio stations and retailers (among others) can measure how product is performing in the marketplace. Charts like the Hot 100 are designed to measure the success of current product, as opposed to catalog product.

What's with all the Mariah Carey haters? // 7:00 PM EST Updated by Casey

She attracts almost universal hatred and yet sells millions of records. Can I be the only one out there who thinks Mimi's music is really rather good?

There are certain stars in pop the public loves to hate - almost murderously, it sometimes seems. At the moment, for some people it's Pete Doherty. Others still wish to burn Phil Collins alive. Personally, I want to give Chris Martin a really thorough slapping whenever I see him doing his "look at me, I'm a hugely sensitive showman" routine on telly.

One star who attracts almost universal contempt these days seems to be Mariah Carey. Her very name is almost a cuss word, in middle-class circles at any rate. (At our office party this year, guests have been invited to run up CDs of a couple of tunes to rock the room, with just one proviso: no Mariah Carey. All I Want for Christmas is You was also named the worst Christmas song ever in yesterday's Observer Music Monthly.

And this hate will almost certainly find further fuel from the weekend's news that Mimi is to sue porn star Mary Carey (to stop her trademarking the very similar-sounding name on the grounds that customers might confuse the two, thereby defaming her own "brand"). As a legal action it does sound like a fairly classic "only in America" legal case, particularly if you look - as in the interest of research, you understand, I did - at how very unlike the two Careys look. No link there, you might have noticed - you'll just have to google for Mary yourself. This is a family blog.

But back to the better known Carey. While I do find the tales of her prima-donnish behaviour, her ridiculous demands for grand luxuries in hotels, etc amusing - I can't share the hatred so many people seem to have for her music. (And, since she's obviously emotionally vulnerable, I get a bit irritated at the public venom directed at a fragile nature.) People have actually said to me, in conversations about music when I've enthused about my taste for R'n'B, "I don't believe it, next thing you'll be telling me you like Mariah Carey!"

The thing is, actually, I really do. I'm not a fan of her work while she was the property of Tommy Mottola, the Columbia records executive who star-spotted her, then became her husband while still managing her career. It's aimed at the mass market in a shameless way that deploys Carey's astonishing singing range to fake up strong emotion, and it's often nauseating.

However, since she and Mottola separated in 1996 and Carey was able to incorporate her love for hip-hop into the songs, she has just got better and better. The single We Belong Together is plainly one of the very best pop songs recorded in the last 20 years. Yet I can remember a lot of people, after Live 8, saying it was the most appalling thing they saw all day. I saw the performance too, and I thought it was great.

Tell me: am I entirely alone in recognising how good she is? Millions and millions of people buy her records - so why does my love for these songs feel like such a lonely passion?

DJ Clue Talks About Working with Mariah // 6:50 PM EST Updated by Casey

In a recent interview to promote his upcoming album "The Professional 3," DJ Clue was asked about working with Mariah.

Q: Whose idea was it to do the remix of Mariah Carey’s Don’t Forget about Us?
A: Me and Mariah came up with that together. It features Styles P and Fabolous. It has the vibe of the We Belong Together remix. You can check the new remix on iTunes and it’s on my new album as well.

Q: What is it like working with Mariah?
A: Mariah is cool and she’s fun to be around, we’ve been friends for a while now and work well together. She brings Jack [her dog] to the studio all the time. I’m supposed to get with her this weekend to work on something for her new album. Once she has an idea we work quick. It’s going to be some hot, hip hop music. I’m hopefully going to do a few tracks on that project. It was a good experience DJ’ing for her Emancipation of Mimi tour because the crowd was hype.

MTV Reminisces About Mariah's Acting Debut // 9:03 AM EST Updated by Casey

Sure, the movie-career launches of Madonna ("Desperately Seeking Susan"), Jewel ("Ride With the Devil") and Faith Hill ("The Stepford Wives") didn't exactly go according to plan, but no one has ever walked headfirst into a career-trashing truck quite like Mariah did with "Glitter" (2001). Limping into theaters amid her musical meltdown, the 9/11 attacks and her attempts to sell ice cream, "Glitter" probably would have gotten lost in the shuffle even if it were good, but oh, was it bad. Carey has since reinvented herself successfully from a musical point of view, but after the merciless drubbing that tarnished "Glitter," it's doubtful that we'll ever see another movie from Mimi.

Mariah Carey battles porn star over stage name // 9:15 PM EST Updated by Casey

Grammy-winning pop singer Mariah Carey is trying to block porn star-turned politician Mary Carey from trademarking her similar-sounding stage name, saying that fans could get the two performers confused.

But the adult film actress, whose real name is Mary Cook, said on Friday that she would not be intimidated by the international superstar and will press forward with her trademark application.

"I'm ready to battle Mariah over this because I've been Mary Carey for a long time," Mary Carey told Reuters. "It's kind of funny because I'm a porn star and I've been being myself for a long time. I think she's being silly."

The star of such films as "Double Air Bags 11" and "Boobsville Sorority Girls," she started using the stage name Mary Carey in 2002 and once ran for California governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger, filed the trademark papers earlier this year.

In October, a lawyer for Mariah Carey sent Mary Carey's representatives a letter threatening legal action if she did not withdraw the application.

"MARY CAREY and MARIAH CAREY share the identical surname and have first names that are very similar," attorney Robert Becker wrote. And in part because the porn star was seeking the trademark for audio and video recordings, he said, "Confusion between your client and her MARY CAREY trademark and our client and its MARIAH CAREY trademark is therefore likely."

Becker also demanded that Mary Carey use her name only for "adult entertainment" and that she not sing or perform music.

"This is a technical procedure to stop a trademark registration. Mariah Carey has no affiliation with Mary Carey," said Mariah Carey's spokeswoman, Leslie Sloane-Zelnik.

David Beitchman, a lawyer for Mary Carey, said he believed Mariah Carey stood little chance of winning.

"My first thought was, does Mariah Carey realize what her lawyer is comparing her to and are they seriously concerned?" Beitchman said. "Do they seriously think the fans are going to be confused?"

Mariah Carey, who suffered a brief career slump after dominating the pop charts during the 1990s, had a major comeback with last year's "The Emancipation of Mimi," the best-selling pop album of 2005. She won a Grammy for the single "We Belong Together."

Britney Spears: I Will Become the Next Mariah Carey // 10:52 PM EST Updated by Maggie

In an article in the LA Times entitled "How Britney Spears Could Shake Off a 'Toxic' Year," Jay Frank suggests that Britney Spears to use Mariah as a model of success.

Resolution No. 2: "I will become the next Mariah Carey, not the new Michael Jackson.

There's plenty of ways to approach a comeback, but not all of them are wise. "I think there will be ridiculous expectations on that first single no matter what she does," said Jay Frank, chief of programming for Yahoo Music. "So I think she just needs to get that single out and move on with life…. That would be better than trying to come back with some grandiose, full-blown album."

Frank said the model should be Carey, who was written off and responded like the Rocky Balboa of divas. "She walked away, stayed low-profile and just worked really hard." Carey also embraced a leaner, contemporary hip-hop sound. The result: Grammy nominations and the second-best selling CD of 2005.

What's the worst approach? Frank said Jackson's pattern of inflated and unfocused projects and haughty resistance to starting from scratch. "That," Frank said, "could be a disaster for Britney."

Rick Dees, the venerable morning DJ now on Movin' 93-FM, said the audience's fascination with Spears was still potent but that it could easily flip into disdain. "She needs to be careful. I'd hate to think she's getting desperate. You wonder who's giving her advice."

Careyed Away: Mariah on the Cover of Aspen Peak // 4:01 PM EST Updated by Maggie

Megastardom does not come without its hard work, passion, generous spirit, and quest for new and creative outlets… at least for Mariah Carey. The singer, songwriter, actress, and soon-to-be fragrance maker is on the go, on her way to Aspen, and has no plans of slowing down.

ASPEN PEAK: You recently wrapped up your US tour for your CD, The Emancipation of Mimi, and you’re already heading for Japan. How are you feeling?
MARIAH CAREY: This is usually my vocal rest day. I just did a couple of shows back to back. I don’t speak between shows, but this is my favorite magazine! I’m on my way to the airport, heading for Japan, and that tour is close to three weeks. I just came from Phoenix, and we had a slight party afterward, which I don’t really do. Right now, it’s all about the plane ride and silence.

AP: So this US tour was the first time you traveled by tour bus….
MC: I loved it. Everybody was laughing at me, like, “Yeah, right. You’re so never gonna do that.” I know I have this diva thing, but I really did like it.

AP: How was the experience overall?
MC: I had a lot of private time, which I don’t usually. My apartment in Tribeca is really big and there are people around all the time. This was cozy. It felt like I had more independence. My dog Jack had his little nook. He has become a celebrity in his own right—he was nominated for two Relly awards [from Live with Regis and Kelly]. The funniest part is that he’s taking the tour bus home right now.

AP: How does this tour compare with ones in the past?
MC: In my opinion, it was the biggest and best tour I’ve ever done. We had great supporting acts. Sean Paul opened up the first half of the tour. Busta Rhymes did the whole West Coast. It was great having them out there. The crowd was so diverse—from 14-year-old girls to 24-year-old hip-hop guys to older married couples.

AP: How many people tour with you?
MC: We had about 78 people, 13 trucks, and eight buses.

AP: I hear you’re going to South Africa in December with Oprah when she opens a new school for girls. How did this come about?
MC: Oprah sent me an invitation. I had been to the Legends Ball as well, which was amazing and one of the most—no, the most—fabulous event I’ve ever been to in my life. The luncheon and the special care and time she took for her guests were amazing. And this trip should be an incredible piece of history, so I’m looking forward to being there. It’s an honor and privilege to be invited.

AP: You’ll be in Aspen for Christmas—how were you introduced to the town?
MC: I’ll be there… for Christmas Day. I love the lead up to Christmas. I’ve been going [to Aspen] since about 1997. I went to Telluride first, which was cool and pretty.

AP: What do you plan to do here?
MC: I’m not a great skier at all. I take one run and ski in an outfit that’s cute. The point is that I love having a white Christmas. I love the vibe of Aspen… not necessarily the whole paparazzi-celebrity thing, which is cool, but I do stuff like going on sleigh rides with friends. We go all out to really have the most lovely Christmas and to relive my dreams of being a kid. Being out in Aspen is always so amazing and picturesque. I have a sense of feeling at home there.

AP: Are there any places you go every year?
MC: I usually go to Matsuhisa—I think it’s my favorite of all the Nobu restaurants. I’ve seen Chef Nobu there more than I’ve seen him in Japan. I’m usually at Joan Boyce’s jewelry store. I like Piñons. Their salad is my favorite.

AP: Back to the slopes: Do you ski only on Aspen Mountain?
MC: I’ve been to Snowmass. I think it’s easier for skiers like me. I don’t want to sit here and talk about how bad I am, but here’s the problem—I’m not an early-to-rise person. I really like to sleep, so by the time I get to the slopes, it’s always like the last run, so if I go to a snowboarding class or something, I’m not going to get much time in. I might as well ski one run and call it a day. But this year I’m going to try to go snowboarding. I haven’t gotten past the “fall on your buttocks” stage yet, so I’m waiting for that to happen.

AP: But you’ll have your friends here to look out for you.
MC: Yeah. I’ll have friends and extended family here. I have a friend from England who’s coming and in and another from Sweden who’s been a friend since the 10th grade.

AP: Do you stay in the same place each year?
MC: I try different places, but I really would like to have a place in Aspen one day. I’m a very specific person. I built the place where I live now, and I’ve built places before. I kind of like things to be exactly how I like them. We know what that process takes… a billion years and a billion dollars!

AP: Would you like to live in town?
MC: I think something on the outskirts would be cool, but I could come in if I wanted to. I really like the serenity, and it looks like something out of an incredible painting. It’s so gorgeous. It’s not just about celebrity moments there. It’s about fun. I actually go tubing all the time.

AP: You once worked with a charity and brought children here from Denver, who were living in an orphanage. Will you do that again this year?
MC: I’m trying to. It’s a lot of fun, and Christmas is obviously about giving and sharing. If that means your time and creating a fun environment for kids, I think that’s something everyone should try to do. It’s really important for me to give back. I feel I’ve been so blessed. Last year we went ice skating [with the kids], which is pretty funny to watch. It’s like watching me ski.

AP: Do you hike when you’re here?
MC: Sort of, kind of. I don’t think it would qualify in a hiking manual. I go on walks near where I’m staying, which usually has wooded areas and brooks.

AP: Where do you want to stay this year?
MC: I don’t know yet, but it has to have a hot tub. I like to get out of the hot tub and roll in the snow. Someone told me that was a tradition in Aspen, but maybe they were lying to me. It’s a tradition for us to have Santa Claus-looking bikinis, jump in the hot tub, and roll in the fresh snow.

AP: So after the week here, and then South Africa with Oprah, what’s next on your agenda?
MC: I’m working on a movie that I’ve been really excited about called Tennessee, produced by Lee Daniels, who was the producer of Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman.

AP: What’s your role in the film?
MC: I play a waitress who is a down-home country girl. It’s an ensemble piece and a nice role. The story is about two brothers who are on a journey to find their estranged father.

AP: When will the film be released?
MC: The goal is before Christmas 2007.

AP: You have a lot in front of you.
MC: Another big priority is a fragrance I’m launching with Elizabeth Arden. It’s the first time I’ve ever done a fragrance. It’s been an amazing and creative process. You sit down with the “juice” companies, and then they show you the different scents. You then compose the scent. The process was very similar to writing a song. The fragrance is almost done, and next is the bottling and then the marketing campaign. The fragrance will come out in conjunction with a new album, which I’ll start working on right after Christmas.

AP: Is there a working title?
MC: There is, but I can’t tell you right now!

AP: You’ve had an amazing success with The Emancipation of Mimi. You must be very proud of it.
MC: I’m really proud of winning the BMI Songwriter of the Year, and Song of the Year awards… it meant a lot to me. Unless people see you sitting behind a piano or strumming a guitar, they don’t recognize you as a true songwriter, which I consider myself to be first and foremost. A lot of people don’t realize that.

    AP: Quite a year, right?
MC: The whole time I was just really looking forward to coming to Aspen.
