Billboard Single Review: "Say Somethin'" // 5:38 PM EST Updated by Casey

Say Somethin'
MARIAH CAREY

Producer(s): The Neptunes
Genre: POP
Label: Island (album track)

Just as we are singing mighty praises over Mariah Carey's sterling new gospel ballad release, "Fly Like a Bird"—in which the re-crowned diva delivers a consummate vocal—Island Def Jam distracts radio with a second, simultaneous single intended for rhythmic top 40. "Say Somethin' " is apparently meant to be an event record, a collaboration with Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg, accompanied by a glam videoclip that follows a Louis Vuitton-draped Carey traipsing across Paris. But underneath the surface, the scantly produced drum'n'bass album track is simply a series of gimmicks, the kind employed to boost lesser artists' careers. The melody line is palpable and Carey's vocal is appreciable, but "Somethin' " is mostly a reminder of a time when Carey required others to boost her chart heft. Those days are over. "Fly Like a Bird" is a classic; why muddy the water with this release?

Mariah's "Tennessee" character to experience domestic violence // 3:59 PM EST Updated by Casey

As previously and exclusively reported by Mariah Daily, Mariah will co-star in the upcoming film, "Tennessee," as Krystal Evans, a waitress in Texas who dreams of being a country star in Nashville. Filmmaker Lee Daniels discusses the film, Mariah's involvement, and reveals more details about her character in a new article for AOL Black Voices. Below is an excerpt from the article.

In May, principal photography will begin for Daniels' next big project; a family drama titled 'Tennessee' with pop diva Mariah Carey attached as a waitress with singing aspirations, experiencing domestic violence. "It's my version of 'Terms of Endearment," Daniels says of what he considers "lighter" fare. "Mariah is very complex and she has had a very interesting career and she brings all of those complexities to this film. She's on it. Just like Halle Berry, just like Kevin Bacon and just like Cuba Gooding, Jr, she is hungry for this and that’s when superb-ness and brilliance comes."

Carey invests in her namesake wine // 10:06 AM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey is so impressed with the California wine that bears her name, she has invested in the vineyard that produces the tipple.

The pop superstar decided to try the Mendocino County winery's Mariah Zinfandel after learning about its existence - and now it's her favourite drink.

Her rep tells American magazine In Touch: "Mariah enjoys this wine very much. She serves it often."

In fact she endorses the wine whenever she can - on a recent edition of MTV Cribs, Carey cooed about the quality of the drink while relaxing at Richard Branson's paradise island Necker.

News Tidbits // 6:46 AM EST Updated by Casey

--A new photo (right) from the "Say Somethin'" video shoot is used for an advertisement on AllAccess.com. The photo features Mariah presumably wearing Snoop Dogg's hat. A similar shot is believed to be used for the single's cover as revealed by Mariah in a recent interview with Big Boy from Power 106 FM in Los Angeles, California.

--From Moviehole.net: I’m sure I mentioned it before, you know Mariah Carey being linked to ‘Ocean’s 13’. Swinging on the Vine in LA I hear a lot things. The movie is being shot entirely in LA. Obviously it doesn’t mean it’s set entirely Stateside, but we can safely say, this’ll be the last Oceans movie. (never say never). Also, I heard on the Vine Street Vines that Soderberg and Clooney will be parting company, with their Section 8 Production house at the end of the year. Clooney is to concentrate on his directing duties. A damn good company. A damn good team.

--In the March 27, 2006 issue of TIME magazine, singer/actress Bette Midler is interviewed for a special portion called "10 Questions For Bette Midler." When discussing her intentions with her new album, "Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook," Midler mentions Mariah. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

TIME Magazine: Are you trying to reproduce her or do your own thing?

Bette Midler: She was very restrained as a singer. Very stripped down, no frills. It was a challenge for me to not get overly dramatic. Because I am a little bit overly emotional. But I’m not Mariah–I’m not an overembellisher. I like the song to be basically about the lyric and the melody rather than about my musicality.

--A new FOXNews.com article about singer Whitney Houston's financial crisis mentions Mariah a few times. Below is an excerpt containing the references.

Houston’s financial problems are simple, and they were easy to predict. She is a singer, not a songwriter. Unlike Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Madonna, Houston does not write her own material. Or, to be more exact, she never attached her name to her hits and took a cut of the publishing. She has only five song credits on ASCAP’s website.

This is rare among modern singers: almost all of them including Barbra Streisand, were smart enough to write some hits of their own. And if they didn’t, like Bette Midler and Cher, they made their stage show a central source of income. One reason Mariah Carey has not had to tour extensively is that she has her name on dozens of hits.

It’s kind of surprising that Houston fell into this trap. She’s watched both her mother, Cissy Houston, and cousin, Dionne Warwick, neither of whom wrote their own hits, tour endlessly every year and work to keep up with their expenses. You’d think she would have learned something from their experiences.

What’s evident is that over the years Houston has had inadequate advice and counsel. Depending on just record sales to get her through bad times was a mistake. While Houston had many bestsellers, they are well in the past. Simply singing a hit record is not enough if you’re not going to save your money. The real profit in the music business comes from touring and publishing. Houston has toured very little in her career. And with no songs on her resume, she has no perennial moneymakers on which to rely, like Carey’s “Vision of Love” or Madonna’s “Like A Virgin.”

--From 24 Hours Vancouver: Mariah Carey and Jennifer Aniston (she ordered four) are just a couple celebs steaming up beaches in Anna Kosturova bikinis while Victoria's Secret sells them to the masses.

--From the Daily Mirror: It is possible for Americans to travel abroad for quickie divorces; it takes just four weeks to become legal in the Dominican Republic, one to two weeks in Nevada and only 24 hours in Haiti! Celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor have all taken advantage of this.

Mariah Continues Broadway Plans // 9:48 AM EST Updated by Maggie

Mariah Carey's been dreaming of a Broadway Christmas since late 2004, when she originally announced plans for a holiday musical, and now she's finally making progress with her plan. "I don't want to mention anything definitive until things are signed," she told MTV Radio, "but there's a very big company that just signed on to develop the project with me." Carey said the musical — which she'll create, produce and star in — will incorporate music from her 1994 album, Merry Christmas, as well as new material. "It's probably going to be a movie first," she said. "I don't want to say a television movie, because it's not like a cheesy network movie, but then it's going to be made for the Broadway production. So the [TV movie] will set the stage for the stage."

The fancy donation to Mimi // 9:19 AM EST Updated by Maggie

What does the girl who has everything put on her birthday wish list?

Mariah Carey is sitting pretty after selling 9 million copies of her latest album The Emancipation of Mimi.

But even for a pop princess of the highest order, being given a yacht for your birthday must be quite special.

The singer was celebrating her 35th birthday when she received the gift from an unnamed admirer.

The generous fan has not been named - although he is said to be in the music industry.

With album sales like that, Mariah is likely to make many friends in the industry.

Jermaine Dupri Talks About Mariah & The Grammys // 1:51 PM EST Updated by Liron

In the upcoming issue of Blender Magazine (which hits newsstands on April 18th), there is an interview with Jermaine Dupri in which Mariah is mentioned several times. Here are excerpts from the article:

"He was a millionaire at 19. He's written or produced half the songs on the radio. Mariah Carey owes her comeback to him. So why is JERMAINE DUPRI convinced everyone is against him?" (...)

In the middle of dinner, Dupri's assistant leans over and hands him yet another cellphone: "It's MC" It takes Blender a couple of minutes to figure out that "M.C." is Mariah Carey, whose remarkable 2005 career resuscitation Dupri largely engineered. The Grammys are coming up in a couple of weeks, and Dupri and Carey are co-hosting a blowout party after the ceremony, but based on the snatches of conversation that drift into earshot, Dupri isn't doing party planning so much as soothing his friend's pre-Grammy jitters. "Madonna?" he exclaims at one point in his lightly lilting Georgia twang. "Don't you worry about Madonna. She just making that do-da-do-da music." he laughs imitating a corny house beat. (...)

"He's the most important producer in R&B, a kind of Motown for the hip-hop era," says Mariah Carey. "He's got all these great rhythmic and melodic ideas, and he puts them together in a way that's magical." Carey's astonishing 2005 turnaround now serves as inspiration and blueprint for labels attempting similar large-scale reclamation projects. (...)

Dupri has other reasons for feeling itchy today. The Grammys took place a couple of weeks back, and he's clearly taken the voters' snubbing of Mariah Carey personally. "How can you not give Mariah Carey an award on the telecast?" he sneers. "Especially when you used her to sell the show in the first place! This is Mariah fucking Carey!" To add insult to the injury, the Dupri/Carey ultra-exclusive Grammy after-party at the Beverly Hills mansion of supermarket magnate Ron Burkle was broken up by the police. To Dupri, it's further sign of industry disrespect. "It was a beautiful party. The guest list was incredible: Jay-Z, Beyonce, Britney, Eddie Murphy, Chris Tucker, Stevie Wonder. And the cops gonna come? Fuck!"

‘The resulting shots of Mariah and Pharrell flirting are electric’

    By Jasmine Dotiwala

A Making Of The Video shoot for MTV with one A-list artist is usually enough to excite and blow my mind. But two A-listers in the same shoot? It’s like a gleeful high you can’t even express! You can’t imagine my exhilaration when I was invited to a video shoot for Mariah's new single Say Something featuring not just her highness but also the legends that are Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams (PW).

Apparently Snoop’s schedule was so full he couldn't make it to Paris so we are shooting his scenes in a Los Angeles studio this week (and to be honest Mariah and Pharrell caused riots all over the city so Snoop would've just escalated it to uncontrollable proportions).

MC said: “If you guys think I'm a diva and I have requirements, Snoop is like next NEXT level - hip-hop king. His requirements to get to Paris are beyond platinum editions, they're like beyond ultra platinum editions, they're like diamond editions. So we love Snoop, but we wish he had been here as well.”

The shoot took place on two typically beautiful days in Paris where Mariah and Pharrell play the part of a superstar couple spending a romantic day in the city that love built. Driving around in their silver grey Maserati car, they recreate the famous JFK and Marilyn Monroe moment, singing, frolicking and dancing together in the rain on the Alexandria Bridge and walking along the Champs-Elysees.

They also shop till they drop in the biggest most glamourous Louis Vuitton store, before returning to their hotel suite which was meant to be Pharrell's bachelor pad but was really Mariah's hotel suite (sshhh – you didn't hear that from me) for some half dressed steamy frolicking (Mariah in a black swimsuit, Pharrell in just a wife beater vest).

The couple pulled out all their acting skills to flirt and play happy couples and the resulting shots were electric. Even Director Paul Hunter who famously never gives interviews was so pleased he spoke to MTV at length.

We all stayed at the Four Seasons George V Hotel (where I began my career on The Word years ago when I interviewed Jean Claude Van Damme and did a ballet pas de deux with him).

I was surprised that Pharrell gave me an amazingly happy animated interview, as he is notorious with English journalists for being awkward and unforthcoming in interviews. He seemed genuinely shocked when I told him that we usually dreaded speaking to him. After a lengthy conversation it seems Pharrell was so hurt and angered by the News Of The World sex story scandal about him and his friend Jade Jagger a couple of years ago that he then hated all British press. I told him he couldn't tar us all because of one bad apple and that MTV and tabloids were different.

He replied that MTV were just as bad and a girl at TRL in London had asked him a “disrespectful and f***ed up question which vexed him about girls with weaves” so I apologised for us all but advised he should take tabloid interest as a gift and a curse, after all how many black male celebrities are the nationals interested in? Not many? The only reason Kanye got ’nuff press last month was due to 70 naked golden girls!

Anyway I've strayed, I told Pharrell he'd been very professional on the shoot, especially continuing to sing in the pouring rain, he admitted: “I was freezing my nuts off today, but it was fun and this song is something that I'm super passionate about, it took a minute, but it's finally coming out so when you really love something it's like, the endurance just comes. So, for me, singing in the rain and being cold… I mean at some point I'd be just like ‘okay, I can’t do it anymore’, but yes we were out there for a long time”.

As we shot scene after scene the French fans gathered in their hundreds screaming hysterically and police escorts were needed to keep everything safe. At one point there were paparazzi chasing them in their cars driving through the tunnels trying to photograph MC and PW! It reminded me of the Princess Diana tragedy but I bit my lip not wanting to tarnish the vibe.

The shots looked sexy, beautiful and iconic and you know where you can see the video first right? Look out for the Making of the Video for Mariah's Say Something featuring Snoop and Pharrell at the beginning of April all over your MTV! Holla!

Rest in peace to Flying Tiger Golden Child who passed away March 4 – Miami will never be the same without your hustling skills. We loved you. We'll miss you. I know you're sweet-talking the angels in heaven - God bless you.

And RIP Brian Daley – or DJ Swing, as the world knew you. You’re at peace now, you were our corageous souljah. I know you’re in heaven entertaining the angels with your sweet music and making them smile as you did us. All my love.

Happy Anniversary Mariah! // 11:00 AM EST Updated by Liron

On behalf of the Mariah Daily team and fans worldwide, we would like to wish Mariah a heartfelt “Happy Anniversary!” Mariah turns 36 this year, though as fans know, she enjoys celebrating the anniversary of her 12th birthday.

Having achieved phenomenal success during the 90’s, Mariah has made an enormous stake in the new millennium this past year. One of her most successful years in her career, the “Mimi” era has brought with it multi-platinum records, Grammy awards, record-breaking songs, and a permanent, infectious grin on Mariah’s face. Let’s take a look back at the year Mariah will be celebrating today.

Starting with “It’s Like That,” The Emancipation of Mimi started off with a bang. The song, co-produced by Jermaine Dupri, was an instant hit (especially at the clubs). However, its success couldn’t compare to the phenomenon that was “We Belong Together” that followed “It’s Like That” as the second single. Also a JD collaboration, the heartfelt R&B jam appealed to the masses and took off to become “the most successful song of my career,” says Mariah. Staying atop Billboard’s coveted #1 position (on the Hot 100) for a record-breaking 14 weeks, “We Belong Together” didn’t relinquish its throne until Mariah’s third single, “Shake It Off” climbed up the charts to meet it at #2. Within weeks, Mariah was back on top of the charts with her 17th #1 hit, “Don’t Forget About Us.”

It’s almost impossible to describe the monumental success Mariah has achieved in the past year. The Emancipation of Mimi has sold over 9 million copies worldwide (and already named 6x platinum in the US by the RIAA). It’s been named the best-selling album of 2005 and praised by critics from every corner of the world. Then the awards started piling in – 3 Billboard Awards, 1 American Music Award, 4 Vibe Awards, and in February, following an earth-shattering performance of “Fly Like a Bird,” Mariah was honored with three Grammy Awards (bringing her total to five). She won over 50 awards in total for her work on The Emancipation of Mimi.

Of course, Mariah isn’t stopping. She just wrapped up the shoot for her next single, “Say Something” which features Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg, and next month she’ll be filming the video for “Fly Like a Bird.” Always expanding her horizons, Mariah will start filming a movie this spring; she will play Krystal Evans in Aaron Woodley’s Tennessee. The film follows the story of two brothers who are searching for their alcoholic, estranged father to help with a bone marrow transplant. Along the way, they meet Evans, a waitress from Texas who dreams of being a Nashville star.

Despite her hectic schedule, Mariah also says she plans on touring this summer. What else is there to say? Mariah is nothing short of amazing, and we hope she takes a much deserved rest. We love you Mariah – happy anniversary!

Mariah Carey’s record-breaking career // 7:38 AM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey is thirty-six years old, and, barring a debilitating illness, or another movie as bad as “Glitter,” her 2001 vanity project, she will likely break the world record for the most No. 1 songs before she turns forty. The Beatles had twenty, and Carey is currently tied with Elvis Presley for second place, at seventeen.

She could almost break the record this year: her latest studio album—her tenth—“The Emancipation of Mimi,” has what music professionals call “legs.” It was the biggest-selling album of 2005—it has sold 5.5 million copies in the United States—and it has yielded two No. 1 songs: the gentle ballad “Don’t Forget About Us” and “We Belong Together,” an equally gentle but catchier number that held the No. 1 spot for fourteen weeks, longer than any other song so far this decade. There are two singles from “Mimi” on the radio right now, the hip-hop dance number “Say Somethin’ ” and the churchy vocal workout “Fly Like a Bird.” If these songs don’t take Carey to nineteen, she could still go on vacation for the next six months and finish the year with her résumé intact. She was the biggest-selling female artist of the nineties and is the first woman to have three studio albums sell more than eight million copies each in this country. She has written or co-written sixteen of her seventeen No. 1 hits, more than any other female composer, and has produced twelve No. 1 songs, more than any other woman.

Not all Carey’s achievements are commercial, though: she co-wrote one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon, the charming “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (from “Merry Christmas,” of 1994, which also happens to be the best-selling Christmas album of all time, but never mind that). And when she sang her perky dance hit “Emotions” at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, she reportedly sounded a G-sharp three and a half octaves above middle C, one of the highest notes produced by a human voice in the history of recorded music. (Party poopers say that the note was actually an F-sharp.)

Carey’s freakish vocal ability explains part of her appeal. In the same way that people went to a San Francisco Giants game in order to see Barry Bonds hit a home run, people buy Carey’s records in order to hear her do things with her voice that no one else can do. Her first No. 1 song, “Vision of Love” (1990), made it clear that her instrument was the story—and it has remained so, through a celebrity marriage (to Tommy Mottola, then the chief of Sony Music), rumored breakdowns, and the public’s obligatory obsession with her weight. Carey can sing lower notes, like an alto, and extremely high notes, like a coloratura soprano, which says something about her range but little about her style. The brutish purity of her voice places her in pop’s theatrical lineage, in the company of singers like Barbra Streisand, but Carey’s aesthetic is not Broadway, or even particularly white. She is essentially an R. & B. singer, steeped in gospel, soul, and, especially, hip-hop, and she is a master practitioner of melisma, a vocal technique that dates back to Gregorian chant and is common in African-American church singing.

Melisma describes the act of taking one syllable of a lyric and stretching it over several notes—or, in Carey’s case, sometimes ten or twenty. “Vision of Love” is the Magna Carta of melisma. Whitney Houston popularized it, but Carey made melisma a required move for both R. & B. singers and contestants on “American Idol.” (Five years ago, before a concert in Peoria, Illinois, Beyoncé Knowles told me that she started doing vocal “runs” after hearing “Vision of Love.”) The song is a florid composition that expresses the philosophy that Carey has disseminated profitably for sixteen years: love will triumph and everything will be all right. (As she puts it in the song: “I had a vision of love, and it was all that you turned out to be.”) It begins with several bars of lovely, wordless melisma, as if Carey were warming up, and it ends with two very loud passages of melisma, one of them an a-cappella expansion on the word “all” that can be roughly transcribed as: “ah-ha-uh-uh-oh-oo-oh-ooah-ha-uh-uh-oh-oo-oh-oo-ah-oh.”

Calisthenics are only one aspect of “Vision of Love,” however. The chord changes, which are played on electric piano, are reminiscent of early Billy Joel—obvious, consonant, and rich. Carey’s sound changes with nearly every line, mutating from a steely tone to a vibrating growl and then to a humid, breathy coo. The melisma is what people remember about the song, like a ninth-inning grand slam, but that’s not what made it a hit. Carey, who co-wrote it, knew that the singing should bob and weave while the verses move toward a climax—the words are secondary.

Carey couldn’t have succeeded simply by persuading people that she was a craftsman. Her big ballads—“Vision of Love,” along with No. 1 bromides like “Thank God I Found You” and “My All”—appeal to people who otherwise don’t listen to pop. These are people who probably also like Andrea Bocelli and Céline Dion, singers who avoid the sexual tug of the blues and the glorious noises of rock and hip-hop in favor of tremulous expressions of chaste emotion. Yet Carey, more than any other musician, established R. & B. and hip-hop as the sound of pop. One of her frothiest and most delightful No. 1 hits was “Dreamlover” (1993), which features a loop of The Emotions’ 1971 soul tune “Blind Alley,” a song made famous by the rapper Big Daddy Kane, who sampled it in his 1988 track “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’. ” Beginning in 1995, rappers started performing guest verses on Carey’s songs. Suddenly, people who would cross the street to avoid listening to hip-hop were bringing rappers into their house, under the cover of Carey. It became standard for R. & B. stars, like Missy Elliott and Beyoncé, to combine melodies with rapped verses. And young white pop stars—including Britney Spears, ’N Sync, and Christina Aguilera—have spent much of the past ten years making pop music that is unmistakably R. & B.

Among Carey’s best and strangest collaborations with a rapper was a remix of her song “Fantasy,” in 1995. After it was already No. 1, she invited Ol’ Dirty Bastard, from the Wu-Tang Clan, to rhyme over the song, which is built around a sample of the chirping 1981 track “Genius of Love,” by the Tom Tom Club. (Carey has often described herself as an “eternal twelve-year-old,” an assertion borne out by her enthusiasm not just for rainbows, butterflies, and glitter—all of which appear on her album covers—but for the songs that were actually on the radio when she was a teen-ager.) Carey’s sunny world view is a perfect match for the Tom Tom Club’s twinkling keyboards; Ol’ Dirty Bastard, on the other hand, who died of a drug overdose in 2004, was the last person you would imagine hiring for such a sanguine track, and the dissonance is entertaining. “Me and Mariah go back like babies with pacifiers,” he begins his verse. At the end of the song, Carey coos about her “lucky boyfriend” while Ol’ Dirty growls “sweet baby” behind her; he sounds drunk, as though he might fall over. (Ol’ Dirty is apparently not the lucky boyfriend, but Mariah seems to like him anyway.)

“The Emancipation of Mimi” includes no songs as effortlessly cheery or as durable as “Dreamlover” and “Fantasy,” partly because Carey’s melodies now meander, in keeping with current trends in R. & B., and have lost the clarity that pop demands. “Mimi” is Carey’s most thoroughly R. & B. record; even the big ballads are in the “slow jam” vein and have little to do with Las Vegas, opera, or doo-wop. There are only a couple of Hallmark duds to skip over; you can enjoy Carey’s expansive vocalisms without begrudging her moments of brassy self-affirmation.

In some ways, Carey resembles U2, another veteran act currently having extraordinary success late in a long career. (“How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,” the group’s most recent release, won the Grammy for best album of 2005 and has sold three million copies in the United States.) Both acts have left experimentation to their juniors and are sticking to what they do best. In the case of U2, this means using the heavy rhythms and glassy guitar sound that first gained the band notice, in the early eighties. In Carey’s case, this means singing R. & B. but without the scenery-inhaling ballads that helped her sell millions of copies. Her decision largely to omit those ballads from “Mimi” is commercially gutsy—if multimillionaires can be gutsy—and it makes sense. The album’s songs were produced by a host of people, including Jermaine Dupri, Kanye West, and the Neptunes, who have been guiding R. & B. and hip-hop during the past few years. Carey, having proved that she has the lungs of an opera singer, is now making the music that she has always listened to. Her idea of pairing a female songbird with the leading male m.c.s of hip-hop changed R. & B. and, eventually, all of pop. Although now anyone is free to use this idea, the success of “Mimi” suggests that it still belongs to Carey.

Stars and their skeletons // 9:18 AM EST Updated by Casey

The New York Daily News recently published an article about celebrities and their "uncomfortable family secrets." Mariah is mentioned twice in the article. Below are the excerpts.

Celebrities may have fame and fortune, but that doesn't make their uncomfortable family secrets go away. When "Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher revealed her childhood sexual abuse by an uncle in this month's Vanity Fair, she joined a parade of Hollywood celebs with skeletons rattling in their family closets.

Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Mariah Carey and Woody Harrelson all have kin who ran afoul of the law — from bank robbery and a "self-defense" killing to sex offenses and murder for hire.

Songbird Mariah Carey's older sister Alison Carey Scott, 44, who has battled drug addiction for years, was arrested twice last summer for prostitution in Suffolk County. She pleaded guilty and got probation.

And you thought your family was embarrassing. Now go give Uncle Seymour a hug.

Australian singer Missy Higgins admired Mariah as a child // 9:12 AM EST Updated by Casey

Missy Higgins, a singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia, is a big deal back home. She often plays stadiums in Sydney and recently scooped up prizes at the MTV Australia Music Video Awards and in Rolling Stone Australia's readers' poll. But here? Not so much. Nevertheless, in a recent interview conducted by the San Francisco Chronicle, Higgins spoke candidly about her childhood admiration for Mariah. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

San Francisco Chronicle: Have you played a lot of bad shows, like, did you have to play exclusively for kangaroos in the Outback or anything like that?

Missy Higgins: Yeah, not to kangaroos, but I've played some really dodgy places in Australia. Especially in the beginning, I played some really seedy pubs that smelled of beer and ashtrays. But then I'm kind of getting back to that over here in the U.S. Six months ago I did an in-store in front of four people. I didn't know where to look. I didn't want to look at them because that was a little bit too up close and personal.

SFC: Do you think they felt sorry for you or did you feel sorry for them?

MH: I think they felt a little awkward being the only ones in the audience. For me, if I really liked someone and I was the only one at the in-store that would be pretty cool.

SFC: Maybe if you saw Mariah Carey with four other people?

MH: Right. If you admired Mariah Carey.

SFC: I heard you did admire Mariah Carey.

MH: Did you read that? I'm sure I only said that once. I think I definitely did when I was really young because my older sister and brother influenced me a lot. My brother was into Kiss and Queen and all that kind of thing. My sister was into Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. So, yeah, I was into them as much as you could be into something at that age. I wasn't really into music in general when I was young.

SFC: It's OK. You can admit you liked Mariah Carey.

    MH: I just did.

SFC: No, really. Go ahead. I was mainly wondering where that came from, since you don't do that seven-octave thing with your voice.

MH: Maybe I would if I could.

    SFC: Have you tried?

    MH: Yeah, I have.

SFC: Did you break any windows?

MH: I don't think I could ever do that.

The most foolish music deal // 1:35 PM EST Updated by Casey

    Just call her cashin' Carey

As Mariah Carey gets ready to release the fifth ("Say Somethin'") and sixth ("Fly Like a Bird") singles from her multiplatinum smash album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," next week, the actions of her former record company, EMI, seem even more foolish.

In 2001, EMI paid Carey a reported $80 million to release her next five albums, including a $21-million signing bonus before she released one song for the company. On Sept. 11, 2001, she released the soundtrack to her movie "Glitter," which flopped - in part, because the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., shifted the pop-culture landscape away from everything lightweight and, in part, because it was pretty awful.

In January 2002, EMI's new chairman and CEO, Alain Levy, decided it would make more sense to pay Carey another $28 million to leave the company, instead of taking on the additional expense and risk of releasing another record from her. Rather than taking Carey aside and helping her create another massive hit (which was, you know, kind of their jobs), the EMI brain trust, like so many execs these days, decided that cutting costs was easier than expanding the business.

They embarrassed her by publicly asking her to leave. However, living well is the best revenge. Since leaving EMI, Carey picked up her 16th and 17th No. 1 singles, tying her with Elvis Presley for second place behind the Beatles in career No. 1's. She has returned to Grammy-winning, multiplatinum form, making tons of cash for EMI rival Island Def Jam. Wonder who's crying now?

Mariah on Kidd Kraddick in the Morning // 11:51 AM EST Updated by Casey

Earlier today, Mariah was interviewed on the Kidd Kraddick Morning Show. "Say Somethin'" was played throughout the interview while Mariah, Kidd, and Kellie discussed various topics including the release of two singles at once, the GRAMMY Awards, the Louis Vuitton modeling rumors, and American Idol.

Mariah spoke about Pharrell's vocal performance on "Say Somethin'" and explained that he sung the lower parts during the verses, although it's difficult to hear him. So, during the show, Kidd decided to sing the low parts while Mariah sang her parts.

While on the subject of the GRAMMY Awards and how they've shafted her, Mariah mentioned that everyone said she seemed distraught during the 1996 show, but insisted that she really wasn't. She also expressed that she thought "One Sweet Day" deserved an award.

When the Louis Vuitton modeling rumors were brought up, it wasn't clear whether Mariah was just acting coy, or really didn't know anything about it.

Kellie declared that American Idol should do a Mariah Carey theme one night. Kidd added that contestants would have so many songs to choose from. Kidd had Randy Jackson's phone number and decided to give him a call during the show. He and Mariah left a message for Randy that he needs to get her a theme night.

Mariah's figure was also discussed and she talked about doing water aerobics with her trainer from St. Bart's. MC also mentioned that she did a diet consisting of soup, spinach, and swordfish. She said she got so sick of swordfish that she was like, "Can we get some different fish in here?"

Mariah added that she's just a muscular girl, even when she's in great shape like this. She said that someone could hit some of these fragile stars in the leg and they'd fall over, but if you hit her in the leg, your arm would probably break. Then she said, "And I say that in the most humblest of ways."

After the interview, Kidd spoke about how anxious they were before, but said that she was so pleasant. Kellie mentioned that Mariah's reputation for being late preceded her, but said that once you talk to her, she makes it well worth your time.

In related news, it is believed that Mariah will be interviewed for the Valentine in the Morning show on Tuesday, March 28.

Are Mariah And Pharell Together? // 10:49 AM EST Updated by Casey

There's been a lot of chinwagging lately on whether Mariah Carey and Pharell Williams are keeping warm together during the final weeks of the winter.

So, being inquisitive types, we've decided to have a little poke about in their pictorial affairs...

We've called our specialist, Dr Love, in to have a look and tell us whether they're for real or not. So it's over to you, Dr Love.

Hello Showbiz fans, Dr Love here. It's very nice to be back and please, if you've heard the allegations made about my credentials to the Royal Celebrity Board Of Love, please clear them from your mind as I've been found not guilty.

Right, down to work it is. Mariah and Pharell have been together recently to record a single and shoot a video, as this picture here shows.

But is the flirting just a publicity stunt to help sell their new tune?

In the vid the pair get very close without actually touching, giving only the suggestion of coupledom.

The pair have, however, been snapped touching - holding hands, to be precise.

Mariah's preening could be interpreted as a sexual signal to Pharell...

Particularly when she draws attention to her chest area.

But all of this is directed away from Pharell and towards the camera.

Whilst this is all going on, Pharell keeps a low profile, looking like he'd like to get away. Back to the boudoir, perhaps?

Or is he just uncomfortable with cosying up to Ms Carey?

Mariah keeps on waving - is she hanging about so the cameras get as many pics of them as poss?

Note how the pair don't walk in time - not really the sign of a couple's unity.

And on closer inspection, the hand-hold looks limp.

But doubts begin to fade when we see these genuine smiles.

    And they begin to relax.

One last wave from Mariah... The verdict: There's strong evidence to suggest Mariah and Pharell are faking their flirtatious behaviour but we can't be sure. What do you reckon?

Pharrell Brings Snoop And Mariah Together // 9:43 AM EST Updated by Casey

He plays musical matchmaker to the stars…

Snoop Dogg has revealed his guest spot on Mariah Carey’s new single Say Something was brought about by Pharrell Williams.

“We were working in the same studio. I was in the front end and she was in the back,” Snoop told MTV News “And Pharrell actually made it happen. He was like, ‘Come down the hallway and get on this mic right now.’"

And it was down to another superstar mate to give him direction. “Nelly was there too," he says. "He gave me direction on which way to take my rap.”

Despite her reputation as being notoriously hard to please, Mariah’s very happy with the results. “Snoop sings and raps and he was one of the first people to bring that style to the forefront. He took it to a new level. So that’s why its great to have him on the this track doing what he does so wonderfully,” she says.

Mariah let MTV behind the scenes for a Making The Video which you’ll be able to see in early April.

Note: A new MTV News bulletin titled "Mariah & Snoop in LA" is currently available for streaming on MTV UK's website. Check it out!

Mariah on the Cover of Animal Times // 1:03 AM EST Updated by Maggie

Mariah is featured on the cover of next month's Animal Times, an animal-rights magazine sponsored by PETA. The cover says "Mariah Gave Us Her Furs: You Can Too" and seems to be supporting Mariah's quiet movements against wearing fur. Note that a few months ago, it was reported that Mariah had received several fur coats as gifts, and because she is against wearing fur, donated them to PETA to use in their animal rights campaigns.

Animal Times is free and is available at PETA.com.

She's the biggest-selling female artist of all time, but Mariah Carey isn't content with shifting millions of CDs.

The curvy beauty, 35, who is hotly tipped to play the lead in gritty new movie Tennessee, is soon to hit our small screens in her first-ever TV ad - for Intel Centrino Duo, a whizzy new computer chip thingie...

We're told: "Mariah's asked to do commercials every day but when she heard that Lucy Liu, Seal and John Cleese had all done the Intel adverts, she agreed."

Pop diva Mariah Carey is considering expanding her talents to modelling, after her newly-svelte figure sparked a string of high-fashion offers. Toni Braxton is proud of Mariah // 12:04 PM EST Updated by Casey

In a recent e-mail interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, soul diva Toni Braxton commented on a wide range of topics, from her health to producers messing with her work. Below is an excerpt from the interview in which Braxton was asked about Mariah's "comeback."

STLtoday: "What do you think about the year Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston had - Mariah's comeback and Houston's exposure on 'Being Bobby Brown'?"

Toni Braxton: "I am so proud of Mariah. And I have to say that 'Being Bobby Brown' was a complete guilty pleasure. My husband and I think it's great. I don't always agree with the seeming 'manipulation' of video footage, not that I'm accusing anyone of it, but I felt that sometimes a certain aspect or two might have been slanted a particular way that might not have been fair. How is that for politically correct speech?"

Mariah, Pharrell Hit Paris For Romantic Getaway In New Clip // 11:17 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey's got a new man on her arm — and leg — in her latest music video, which she shot last week in Paris. For "Say Somethin'," Pharrell Williams plays Carey's oh-so-patient boyfriend who takes the singer sightseeing and shopping for a romantic day on the town.

"You know what was so great about being in Paris? Usually I'm inside a hotel room and I don't get to see anything. This time, I finally got to drive around the city, walk around the city and hang out," Carey said. "I love Paris; I love the electricity this city has. And it gave me a new perspective on this song, which is one of the first songs I recorded for [The Emancipation of Mimi]. It's got a hot vibe to it, when you're driving around in the car on a normal, rainy day in Paris, driving around in circles in a Maserati — who doesn't do that every day?"

Well, just about everyone else — but then again, Carey's not playing just anyone in her new clip. Carey and Williams are a superstar couple, trying to find romantic interludes when they're not being chased by the paparazzi in his Maserati — at least, that's what the video's treatment called for. But on the first day of the shoot, director Paul Hunter had to contend not just with his fake paparazzi, hired for the scene, but real ones as well, who chased after the pair on scooters.

"That's just a regular day in the life for Mariah, probably," Williams said. "I'm a low-key guy, so there's no paparazzi under the studio console, or in my apartment, or jumping out of my pool. I'm just not into it. So it's weird when you have these people running up, especially in Paris — they're on Vespas, doing wheelies, and it's wild."

The chase being real, it made it that much easier for Carey and Williams to get into character as a couple looking to get away from it all. For one of their escapes, the two frolic on the Le Pont de Paris bridge overlooking the river Seine.

The next destination point required clearing out Louis Vuitton's flagship store on the Champs-Elysées, so they could have some private shopping with Carey modeling her favorite outfits while Williams watches and waits. She also tries on a massive amount of shoes, while Williams plays piano on her legs to entertain himself.

"Obviously, being able to take your pick of anything in the store and have the whole store shut down for you is every girl's dream," Carey said. "You know, just a pretty standard day in the life of anybody. No, just joking. There was a time in my life I only had one pair of shoes, so that's my justification for having that little perk on the job."

Because Vogue fashion guru Andre Leon Talley popped by the store during those scenes, he ended up making a cameo as a shop assistant. "We love him," Carey said. "He saw me walking around in a bodysuit and he was like, 'Darling, you have to wear that!' So he convinced me that's the outfit I should wear [later on], so if anybody's got a problem with it, call him up."

After the shopping spree, Williams takes Carey home to his "bachelor pad" (really her hotel suite), where they kick back with a few Dalmatian puppies. "I thought the puppies would add cuteness to it," she said. "But Paul was like, 'Make it more hot, make it more hot!' And someone else was going, 'Sit on his lap,' and I'm like, 'Ask me nicely! Produce a diamond ring or something, for me to sit on a lap!' No, it was fun. I don't have a problem sitting on anybody's lap. I just wanted a better invitation, for the sentiment of the song."

If Carey needed a better invitation, so did Snoop, who's featured on the song but not in the Paris scenes. His part in the clip was shot separately on Sunday in Los Angeles.

"If you guys think I'm a diva and I have requirements, Snoop is the next level," Carey said. "He's the hip-hop king! So his requirements to get to Paris are, like, beyond platinum editions; they're, like, beyond ultra-platinum editions; they're like diamond editions. So we love Snoop and we wish he had been here, but I think shooting him in L.A. will be good because we'll have more time, more control. He probably would have gotten really mobbed in the streets here anyway."

While "Say Somethin' " will be Carey's next single for top 40 radio, she's sending out "Fly Like a Bird" to urban radio at the same time, with both hitting the dial the first week of April. A video for the song will be shot in New York later this month.

Mariah Barey // 2:47 AM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey knows not to get lippy with her make-up artists - not while lying about in next-to-nothing, anyway...

She was snapped getting set to slip into a little black dress and join hunky Pharrell Williams for the vid of her single Say Something, out on June 5. The 35-year-old took over the five-floor Louis Vuitton store in Paris for the shoot, but diet-mad Mariah had a clothing crisis.

An insider tells us: "Marc Jacobs brought clothes in a US size 6 but they were all too big, so stylists had to find garments in a size 4."

With 17 US No. 1s to live up to, let's hope her record sales don't shrink too...

Mariah's New Skinny Bod! // 2:09 AM EST Updated by Casey

Curvaceous Carey has toned up and slimmed down. How did she do it?

Even better than three new Grammys? A sleek new physique! Sources say Mariah Carey, 36, who flaunted her fab, firm figure in Paris during a March 9 video shoot, has dropped a whopping 20 pounds in recent months. "She was so thrilled to be fitting into Louis Vuitton size 4s," her manager, Benny Medina, tells Us of her Parisian attire. How did she shake off those pounds? Us investigates.

It's like that y'all "I have never seen someone approach diet and exercise in such a disciplined way, especially someone who has such a busy schedule," Medina says. While Carey's work pace and constant traveling made getting fit tricky in the past, the singer is making time for daily water workouts - she loves swimming and water aerobics! - with a trainer.

Diva dish Also getting a makeover? Her eating habits. Sources say the singer is now hooked on a healthy, low-carb, low-sugar diet (lean meats, salads, veggies and fruit) and eats several small meals a day. So far Carey seems pleased with the results. "I'll never be a stick woman," she has said of her shape-up. "But now I'm fierce!"

All That Glitters // 2:05 AM EST Updated by Casey

How's this for an understatement? "My next film is gonna star Mariah Carey, so that should be really interesting."

I initially interpret Aaron Woodley's words as a Colbert-ian jape but, no, he's quite serious. Reports published in the industry trades last week confirm it. Produced by Lee Daniels (Monster's Ball, The Woodsman), the film is called Tennessee and is slated to start shooting in the spring.

"It's a straight-ahead drama about two brothers on a road trip," Woodley continues. "The younger brother has leukemia and they're searching for their estranged father to help save his life through a bone-marrow transplant. They haven't talked to him in 10 years and he was an abusive alcoholic. Along the way, they meet Mariah Carey's character, who's working in a diner and has dreams of being a country singer."

Woodley admits that this is about as far away from Rhinoceros Eyes as he could get. But he's determined not to be pigeonholed "as the director who does these weird quirky movies." (Perhaps he's recalling the time his uncle nearly directed Basic Instinct 2.) As for Carey's contribution, Woodley believes it will banish any unpleasant memories of her first movie venture. "Glitter," he says, letting the title hang in the air for a moment. "Whatever -- that's the past. People will see what she's really capable of."

She really liked Rhinoceros Eyes, too. She told him so while she was giving him a tour of her closets. No, he's still not making this up.

Spanish real estate magazine Aifos Costa interviews Mariah // 11:46 PM EST Updated by Casey

“You can’t go to hell and back if you haven’t felt a bit of happiness.”

In this exclusive interview for Aifos, Mariah Carey talks from the professional and personal sides of her life.

Aifos Costa: Recently I believe you had a small problem with the clothes in the American Music Awards. What happened?
Mariah Carey: (Laughing) It was something stressful. I went on stage with a gorgeous dress that was not finished yet, and on top of it, it was an important night and I was starting the show. Could you really see the rip on it?

AC: Yes, of course we noticed.
MC: I spent the rest of the night stitching it before going on stage, although finally we decided to take the zipper out, since it was a custom made dress. You know the kind of tight dress that an emergency repair would have made a mess when I was out there. So we decided to stitch it on. Its something I've done a million times, but this time it didn't work.

AC: Where do you like to travel?
MC: I love the Mediterranean coast and Japan as a country, (pointing to her dog). This is Jack.

AC: You must feel really sure of yourself when you pick your glamorous dresses out.
MC: Well, if I had had a little more time the dress problem wouldn't have happened. To me, that night was as big as the Grammy night, because its a big show. Dick Clark is a legend and to be the host that night is a big honour. Any way I did it, there I was opening the show, with a ripped dress. I remember I was looking at Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, who were sitting in front row, two lovely people who I adore and know well – I met Will when I was 17, but I never sang for him, and when he finally saw my music he asked me why I hadn't gone to see him before signing my contract. – I was telling the audience all about how you all are my friends and things like that. Although I couldn't stop thinking about how I almost didn't make it on stage that night. During the break I had to go to the dresser to get changed again – Pamela Dennis and me had no underwear on, so this was another “detail”. So if anything else had gone wrong that night it would have been a real scandal. They would have said I did it on purpose. People are like that. But I don’t mind them anymore, but I was completely naked under that dress and with all those people in the front row, with a big step to get on to the stage, so if I did win a prize I had thought to tell everyone what had happened. In the end nothing happened, but with all the stress I forgot something I never forget when I win a prize, to thank all my fans for all the wonderful support. I have a wonderful fan club.

AC: You always manage to mention your fans, even with your busy life-style. How do you keep in touch with them?
MC: Well, it’s like visiting many different countries. I go to lots of places and see the same people year after year. I think they are the friends I grew up with and there are always new followers in line. Logically I cant know where they are, but as a reminder of their presence I always carry with me my book of fans, because I don't always have the time to read what they write. I’ve got a favourite from Canada that writes funny stuff. My fans are always listening to what is happening in my life and what I say to the media, and they come up with letters with lots of fun ideas in them. They are loyal, devoted... And maybe people will think I’m exaggerating, but I really do feel all these thankful words. They give me approval in what I do, It’s something that makes me feel good about what I do. It make me feel good because when I decided to make music I wanted to free myself from a very unhappy period of my life, like my youth. A time when I didn’t feel very graceful, I didn’t feel..

AC: At the moment you seem to be having one of the best times of your life. Is this true?
MC: It is. The only thing I’m always worried about as you can imagine, is my voice, because when I’m having a good time at a party with my friends, I’ve got to stop and tell myself “shut up!”. If I want my voice to sound right I have to stop and take care of myself, because when I’m tired it doesn't. That's why I constantly have to drink lots of water to hydrate myself.

AC: With all the travelling, parties, recordings, record shows, etc. Do you ever get time to sleep, or better said to rest?
MC: In the past I’ve always had sleeping problems, and I’ve always been an insomniac. I used to write and talk constantly about it, but now I live in a quiet place, and I’ve learnt to disconnect myself, but it hasn't been easy. It’s hard because I deal personally with a lot of details in my career, so there are some times when no matter how many people are behind my work, there are things that I have to do myself, because I am the only one who knows how I like them.

AC: Why don't you tell us about the men in your life?
MC: Because you only want to know one thing, and the answer is... Well, I’m one of those people who think that personal issues are to be kept for yourself.

AC: Do you know that you are one of the few celebrities that apparently do not have a love in their life?
MC: Well, people can believe whatever they want.

AC: But your songs are about love.
    MC: Yes.

AC: How did you end up recording at Capri? It’s rather a unusual place for a North American artist to record an album.
MC: Yes, it’s not normal, but as I said, I really like the Mediterranean and I had heard about the place when I recorded Pavarotti and Friends in ‘99 so I told Randy Jackson, who was working on some songs I wanted to use when I was in Italy. It was Randy who told me there was a incredible place in Capri. So I went over there and fell for its weather and clean air, that is good for my voice.

AC: Do you like the Mediterranean style?
MC: Isn't it the best? I love the Mediterranean. The people, the food, everything. The funny thing is that my brother lives in Italy, and is fluent in Italian. He used to be a model, and did Kick Boxing, but now he’s on to other things. He’s like me. The first time he went to Italy he felt like he had always belonged there, we are not Italian so I don’t know where we get that feeling, but Capri is special for me. I love to walk every day surrounded by nature and without smog.

AC: You seem to be very concerned about a healthy life.
MC: I guess so. In some ways I’m very careful because I spend a lot of time away from home. Some times lots of people handle the microphones I sing with, so I always demand that they are sterilised. It also happens when you shake hands with lots of people. Some opera singers for example, never leave home without covering their faces because their voice is their most valuable instrument.

AC: Some times you have commented that you lost lots of your youth because you spent too much time working.
    MC: It’s true (Laugh).

AC: When you see artists today they seem to be having fun all the time. Are you having fun now?
MC: Well no, you cant say I’m having fun now because I’m working. But it’s fine because I just took a little vacation. I always wanted to make the music I like, and not to have to fight with people that tell me what kind of music to make just because “it works”. Sometimes they say, Why don’t you work with this rapper? Now everyone is tripping on rap. Some News! It makes me annoyed because for years I’ve been trying to integrate urban sounds in my past recordings. I’ve always worked with rappers and made remixes. I worked with ODB and he was a hardcore rapper and no one would expect to see me working with him. Rest in peace... I really liked working with him, he was a great guy.

AC: Could you stop working tomorrow?
MC: Yes, but I’d still sing for fun. Its what I like doing.

AC: But you don't have to sing to make a living.
MC: No, but it’s part of my soul.

AC: Did you ever sing in a small club?
MC: No, but there’s a small jazz club in Los Angeles and some times I think I should go and sing there. I used to sing in jazz clubs, my mother would take me when I was little. I was thinking it would be fun, I remember it was always very late. I’ve been in LA for some time, but I’m thinking about going back to New York.

AC: Do you like the night life?
MC: After my marriage lots of my friends tried to scandalise me with stories about night escapes looking for sex. And I don’t mind, I think it funny. Be yourself, do whatever you want to do but my friends have always made fun of me, because they know I’m a prudent woman.

    AC: Is that true?
MC: Yes, definitely and the cause of that is in a traumatic childhood. Seeing things that have driven me not to have a baby just to have one. To grow without any troubles in that sense.

AC: Do you feel you are getting older than most current artists by turning 21?
MC: No, because I thought of it when I was 18 (laugh). I feel like the same person. I feel that now I’m in the world and every day I learn new things. I have learnt to polish my character. You can’t let pain turn into hate. Or I would have never found any peace. You can’t go to hell and back if you haven’t felt a bit of happiness.

AC: Is there anything you feel you are missing in your life?
MC: I would like to have a few days off (laugh). I love my job and its important to be mentally and physically prepared. Its like being a sportsman, if you break your knee you will be out of the game the entire season. It’ a good example because I have to sleep lots of hours, be careful with my voice and everything. These days I’m happy, and feel proud of having good friends.

About.com reviews "Say Somethin'" // 4:11 PM EST Updated by Casey

    Guide Rating -

At last, in my opinion, the best song from The Emancipation of Mimi will finally make it to the radio as the 4th (or 5th if you count the added "Don't Forget About Us") single from the album. The song will be accompanied by a high profile video shot in Paris. Look for Mariah Carey back in the pop top 10 soon.

    Pros:
  • Perfect vocal pairing between Mariah Carey and Snoop Dogg
  • Smooth, sly production by the Neptunes
  • Dance beats nearly ready for the club

    Cons:
  • No complaints

    Description:
  • Gently percolating beats
  • Mariah Carey at her seductive best
  • Snoop Dogg answering back with encouragement

"Say Somethin'" has been mentioned as a possibility for the next single from Mariah Carey's 6-million-selling The Emancipation of Mimi nearly every time a new single has been released. However, it has been held up for unknown reasons. One explanation that was tossed out was because Mariah Carey does not share production credits on the song like she does on most of her material. "Say Somethin'" is credited solely to the Neptunes as producers. Whatever the reason, it is here at last and it is an event.

The song doesn't amount to much more than a midtempo seduction, but with the near perfect vocal match of Mariah Carey and rapper Snoop Dogg nothing more is needed. Carey was one of the first mainstream pop artists to openly express her love for hip hop and collaborate with hip hop artists. Now that these collaborations are the norm Mariah pulls together the Neptunes, arguably the top production team in the business, and Snoop Dogg, already a rap living legend and still one of the most distinctive voices in hip hop. The combination is magic. You will be singing this tune and dancing along for months to come.

Kanye West comments on GRAMMY "vote splitting" // 9:38 AM EST Updated by Casey

Outspoken rapper Kanye West offered up some post-GRAMMY Awards comments for a recent article with the Sydney Morning Herald. Below is an excerpt from the article in which West speaks about the "vote splitting" between his and Mariah's albums for the coveted Album of the Year GRAMMY.

Kanye West is the most important person working in popular music right now. In his own humble opinion, at least. Before the Grammy awards last month, the multi-award-winning, critically acclaimed and hugely controversial American producer and rapper declared: "If I don't win album of the year, I'm really going to have a problem with that." In the event, although he was nominated for eight Grammies and won three (including best rap album for the second year in a row), the most coveted prize went to U2. West is absolutely convinced he lost on a technicality, with the black music vote split between his album and Mariah Carey's, on which he was one of the featured producers.

"I make categories where I'm up against myself!" he declares. "I definitely deserved album of the year. I'm not saying that I made the best album of all time, I'm just saying it was the best album this year."

He nonetheless declares himself philosophical about the result. "I've accomplished almost everything that someone can accomplish in music in less than two years, so it just gives me something else to do, to make a record that's so annihilating that there's no way that me and Mariah could get vote splitting."

Mimi Valdes of VIBE: The Examination of Mimi // 2:51 AM EST Updated by Casey

The following is an excerpt from a recent interview with Mimi Valdes, Editor-In-Chief of VIBE magazine, conducted by AllHipHop.com. Valdes was asked about Mariah and why she hadn't appeared on the magazine's cover since her "comeback."

AllHipHop.com: Why hasn’t the other Mimi – Mariah Carey – appeared on VIBE’s cover since her resurgence?

Mimi Valdes: Mariah is a perfect example of somebody that is loved by this audience – myself included, love her, love her, love her. But, in the history of VIBE, she’s had three covers - the worst selling covers. They just have not sold. When this album came out, even though it’s clearly her most “VIBE” album, we were thinking, “Is she one of those artists that you love the music, but don’t necessarily want to read about her.” Not to say that we would never do her, but… her next album, just because there is more of a story with the comeback, we could try to figure out something that would be interesting for people to read about.

That is the biggest misconception about covers, they are not about people who are [selling the most], they are about who are people interested in reading about. If you feel like you’ve read everything there is to know about Mariah – you’re not going to pick up the magazine. You’ll pick up her album, you’ll watch her videos, but your not gonna pick up the magazine. Everybody thinks they can run a magazine. I’ll tell you what, Kanye West, last year – worst selling cover.

--From MTV News: Forcing [American Idol] contestants to sing a variety of songs is also one of the ways the judges determine the best singers.

"The theory is that Mariah Carey can sing anything," judge Randy Jackson said. "You hear that expression, 'She can sing the phone book.' So if you can really sing, you should be able to sing anything, so we're testing them. That's the whole competition."

--Juelz Santana was recently interviewed on MuchMusic (Canadian music television station). When asked what he was listening to, Juelz listed "Mariah a.k.a Mimi a.k.a I just did the remix to her single" as one of his favorite CDs right now.

--From RuPaul's weblog: yes, you are absolutely right. MARIAH did have the best album of the year and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN was the best picture of the year... but why are you surprised when "the best" isn't awarded as such? we live in a society of hypocrisy and denial. having witnessed our society from both inside and outside the box, i can list hundreds of examples in our collective behavior that are completely contradicting. the best that each of us can do is to be honest. be authentic with your voice.

Mariah Pulls Out The Big Guns // 12:16 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey is not letting any grass grow under her feet, now that she’s a multiple Grammy winner with a monster-selling album.

Carey has added to her arsenal of protectors and defenders none other than New York record biz attorney Allen Grubman—the very same Grubman she fired in 1997 after splitting with her husband, former Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola.

The dope here is that Carey is still using her longtime legal eagle Don Passman, who guided her through the whole "Glitter" debacle and helped negotiate her $50 million payday from EMI Music.

But Carey, I’m told, feels that she was underpaid by Island/Def Jam for her "Emancipation of Mimi" album. The CD is not only the biggest of 2005, but the biggest of her long and illustrious career, selling millions of copies and yielding several hit singles. At a time when the record biz is dead, "Mimi" was the consistent chart seller week after week last year.

Passman, sources say, while good, does not have the inside track Grubman has with Universal Music Group’s Doug Morris. Only Morris can OK what should be a record-setting money deal for Carey. And only Grubman can get Morris to agree to something like that.

Irony is abound here, however: Grubman made his fortune and reputation on his close relationship with Mottola, who managed, recorded, and married Carey until she divorced him. When Carey cut ties to Mottola, she cut them to Grubman as well. Bringing Grubman back is a surprise, but it shows that Carey is not fooling around, and isn’t letting personal feelings mix with business.

As a smart guy in the music biz said to me yesterday, "Remember, it isn’t the money, stupid. It’s the money, stupid." Duh! And Mariah is maybe the one artist this year who actually deserves it.

Mariah: “Snoop’s More Of A Diva Than Me” // 12:15 PM EST Updated by Casey

Carey dishes on rapper's backstage demands...

Mariah Carey says that Snoop Dogg has even more diva demands than the pop goddess herself.

She was talking exclusively to MTV News on the set of her new video, Say Something, in which she stars with Pharrell Williams.

But although Snoop collaborates on the song, getting him to Paris for the video shoot was just too much. “If you guys think I’m a diva, Snoop is like next-level hip-hop king,” says Mariah. “So his requirements to get to Paris are like, beyond platinum edition.”

Mariah Carey's personal chef, Zipora Einav, doesn't simply feed her songbird client, she nourishes her: The mango wontons offer a hearty dose of vitamin A (a half cup meets 25 percent of your RDA). A toned and trim Mariah turns heads in Paris // 5:49 PM EST Updated by Casey

The stylish denizens of Europe's fashion capital would have been surprised this week to spot one of America's hottest stars promoting her own personal take on glamour. After jetting into Paris a few days ago, Mariah Carey stopped traffic at the Champs Elysees by appearing to film her latest video Say Somethin' in a thigh-skimming, bright pink mac.

Earlier in the day the pop diva was mobbed by fans as she left the city's Four Seasons hotel - this time attired rather more demurely in a cream coat dress. Mariah smiled gamely as minders helped her through the enthusiastic throng of well-wishers.

Although the Grammy winner doesn't lack confidence about her appeal, she has even more reason to be proud of her figure these days. "Everyone said I was fat so I did something about it," she recently told reporters at a post-Oscars bash. "I've been working out like mad."

And as if to prove her point the singer, who turns 36 in two weeks, asked members of the press pack to assess her physique for themselves. "You can even punch me in the stomach and feel how tight that is. But I've gotta slow it down because someone told me I was losing my ass - and I don't want to lose that."

Mariah To Be Featured on Busta's New Album // 11:07 PM EST Updated by Maggie

    Busta Rhymes
    The Big Bang
    Out: April 11th

Rhymes spent three years putting the pieces together for The Big Bang, his first new album since 2002. First, he inked a deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label and worked on twenty songs with Dre. Then he brought in other top producers like the Neptunes, Timbaland, Scott Storch and Just Blaze to work on tracks, and lined up guests including Stevie Wonder, the late Rick James, Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey and Eminem. He says he had 170 songs by the time he released the album's first single, "Touch It," in late 2005. Then tragedy struck. At a February 5th video shoot, Rhymes' bodyguard Israel Ramirez was shot and killed as Rhymes stood nearby. "Everything I'm doing from this day forward is dedicated to Israel," says Rhymes, who has pledged to support Ramirez's family but so far has refused to cooperate with a police investigation. A final lineup for the album has not been set, but Rhymes says a handful of tracks are for certain. The next single, "This How We Do It Over Here," was produced by Dr. Dre and features Elliott. "It's specifically constructed to smash every club in existence," Rhymes says. He's also proud of "Into the Storm," which features Wonder's vocals, and the Dre-produced "Your Time Has Come." "Dre put the track together using the sound of a shovel going into dirt, dirt being poured onto a coffin and a heartbeat as the drum sound," Rhymes says. "It's about karma coming back to haunt you." Mariah Carey Launches Next Two Hit Singles from TEOM // 11:05 PM EST Updated by Maggie

MARIAH CAREY LAUNCHES NEXT TWO HIT SINGLES FROM THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, TO IMPACT APRIL 3rd
SAY SOMETHIN' FEATURING SNOOP DOGG, PRODUCED BY THE NEPTUNES, GOES TO TOP 40/RHYTHMIC RADIO – VIDEO SHOT ON LOCATION IN PARIS, STARRING MARIAH, PHARRELL AND SNOOP, DIRECTED BY PAUL HUNTER

GOSPEL-FLAVORED FLY LIKE A BIRD GOES TO URBAN RADIO

With three consecutive #1 airplay hits under its belt (“We Belong Together,” “Shake It Off” and “Don’t Forget About Us”), performer and songwriter Mariah Carey’s 6x-platinum Island Records album The Emancipation Of Mimi, the biggest-selling album of 2005, will spin off two new singles this week – Say Somethin’ featuring Snoop Dogg (to Top 40/ Rhythmic radio formats) and Fly Like A Bird (to Urban) – it was announced today by Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. Both songs will impact on Monday, April 3rd.

The electrifying new video for Say Somethin’was shot on location in the high-fashion world of Paris last week with acclaimed director Paul Hunter, co-starring Pharrell Williams (of the Neptunes) and Snoop Dogg. The beautiful and cinematic performance piece follows Mariah, as an international movie star, around Paris in Pharrell’s Maserati with paparazzi following them everywhere. Dressed from head-to-toe in Louis Vuitton, they stroll down the Champs-Elysées, stop on the scenic bridge Le Pont de Paris overlooking the River Seine, and chill in Pharrell’s luxurious Parisian apartment. The day culminates in high style, as Pharrell makes every woman’s fantasy come true by closing the newly designed Louis Vuitton store on the Champs-Elysées, setting the stage for their own private shopping spree. Fireworks fly on the streets of the City Of Lights as Mariah once again collaborates with Hunter, who directed the video for her 17th #1 career hit single, “Don’t Forget About Us.”

Fly Like A Bird was produced by Mariah and by Flyte Tyme’s Big Jim Wright. The Gospel-drenched song stirred the emotions of Grammy viewers worldwide last month, when Mariah performed it onstage with a full brass section and Brooklyn’s 30-voice Love Fellowship Tabernacle Choir, under the direction of Grammy-winning Pastor Hezekiah Walker. The accompanying video will be shot in New York in late March.

Intel Goes Back to 'Entertainment in Your Lap' Campaign // 4:40 PM EST Updated by Casey

Intel this week is introducing new TV spots, a refresher of its Centrino “Entertainment in your Laps” campaign. The ads support Intel’s new focus on Intel Centrino Duo technology with dual-core processing. In this series of ads, celebrities appear on a users’ lap in place of a laptop.

The three new TV spots star Mariah Carey, Elijah Woods and Jacques Villeneuve and will air on EPSN and E! Online ads will run on Yahoo and AOL. Jacques Villeneuve is also one of the drivers for BMW Sauber F1 Team, in which Intel is the 'Official Corporate Partner' for the team.

The Mariah Carey spot aired during the Grammy Awards presentation on CBS. Carey makes her TV commercial debut in the spots from McCann-Erickson NY. In the spot, a man is working on his laptop wearing headphones. Carey appears on his lap. “Making a playlist for your girl?” she purrs. “Yeah, my, uh, our favorite songs,” he meekly replies. “Like this one?” Carey launches into song. Voiceover says: “With the new Centrino Duo, your digital entertainment really comes to life.”

Intel started the “Entertainment in your Lap” in September 2005, featuring celebrities like Tony Hawk, John Cleese, Lucy Liu and Seal. TV, print and outdoor were part of the multimillion-dollar campaign.

"Our first 'Laps' campaign for the Intel Centrino was really successful; we have strong attention and recall and consumers got the message on how powerful mobile technology enables entertainment on the go,” said Sean Connolly, integrated marketing manager at Intel. “We are building on this success … and bringing in more celebrities that people are excited to see.”

Intel is trying to maintain market share against competition from other chipmakers like AMD.

Carey tackles rumors about breakdown // 9:11 AM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey has something to say about all those rumors that she had a breakdown and tried to kill herself: No way!

Carey tells the March issue of Marie Claire magazine that her frenetic schedule in 2001 was akin to "telling the Energizer Bunny to work three times harder."

She says she needed a break and retreated to her mother's house to rest.

"They all said I'd had a nervous breakdown, but people don't recover from nervous breakdowns three days later!"

Now that that mess is behind her and Carey is again enjoying success, does she wish she had someone with whom to share it?

"The thing is, I have trust issues. If I'm with another famous person, they're likely to have groupies, and they're likely to cheat on me," she laments. "This is why I can still count the number of men I've slept with on one hand."

Mariah Carey filming in Paris // 4:46 PM EST Updated by Liron

American pop-singer Mariah Carey is in Paris for the shooting of the video for her latest single 'Say something'.

U.S. rapper artist Pharrel Williams was already on film set when Carey arrived on film location on Thursday (March 9).

The shoot took place near Paris' Petit Palais, a pavilion built for Paris 1900 universal exhibition.

The video will be shot in Paris most beautiful landmarks, such as Place de la Concorde or the Champs d'Elysees. The publicist also said a scene will be shot at the luxury shop Louis Vuitton on the Champs Elysees.

Carey has enjoyed a musical comeback. Her latest album, 'The emancipation of Mimi', was the biggest selling release in the United States last year, and she won three Grammy awards on February 8.

She was the only person nominated in all three of the lead categories of album, song and record of the year.

With her musical comeback now taking on near legendary status, Mariah Carey is turning her attention back to the silver screen. The singer, who was last seen in the box office bomb "Glitter," has signed on to play a waitress in the indie film "Tennessee."

Carey is due to leave the French capital on Saturday (March 11).

Mariah At Oscar Parties: "Now I'm Fierce!" // 10:21 AM EST Updated by Liron

  • With another Oscar-cast under its belt, Hollywood's A-list boozed and schmoozed into the wee hours of yesterday morning. High in the hills at Soho House L.A., Mike DeLuca, Rick Yorn and Patrick Whitesell hosted their annual "after-after party" for VIPs looking to cut loose after Vanity Fair's tightly scripted to-do at Mortons.

And let loose they did. "Everyone said I was fat, so I did something about it," slap-happy songbird Mariah Carey blurted to Page Six, seemingly out of nowhere.

"Here! Feel my thighs! Feel my butt!"

After several requests, Page Six agreed to fondle her newly firmed physique, and can confirm the absence of unsightly "jelly."

"See?" Carey said, proudly. "I'll never be a stick woman, but now I'm fierce!"

  • Jack Nicholson skipped the post-Oscar hubbub and headed with his children Raymond and Lorraine to the sanctuary of Dani Janssen's home. Also on hand for Dani's famous monkey bread and fried chicken were Al Pacino, Mariah Carey, Sidney Poitier, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, Shirley MacLaine, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Morgan Freeman and Melanie Griffith. Friends were worried that Dani might stick to her rule that she won't have a party next year if she doesn't have at least one Oscar on the table. Thankfully, Reese Witherspoon plopped hers down in the nick of time.

Mariah at Pre-Oscar A-List Parties! // 11:23 AM EST Updated by Liron

  • NY Post: FRIDAY night was the battle of the agency parties. ICM's Ed Limato held his annual bash at his Beverly Hills home, and first to show was the music crowd: Mariah Carey, Elton John and Mick Jagger with girlfriend L'Wren Scott. The minuscule Jagger, outfitted in Dior Homme, "wears only a size 30 pant - did you know that?" said one observer. The Limato crowd "is an older crowd," one charitable guest quipped. Milling around was Tina Sinatra, Barbara Walters, a "frail looking" Dominick Dunne, Steve Bing and Barbara Davis with her daughter Nancy. After Limato's bash, most escaped to CAA's Bryan Lourde's party several blocks away. "CAA reps, almost all of the hot actors in town - it was the place to be," said a source. Milling around Lourde's home was Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Madonna making a rare appearance with husband Guy Ritchie, Mariah Carey, Scarlett Johansson, Josh Hartnett, George Clooney and embattled Paramount chief Brad Grey. "It was the young hot crowd," said our mole. "Everywhere you looked was somebody."

  • Fox News: Mick Jagger, Elton John, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were all seen under Limato’s backyard catering tent behind the mansion that all those Lethal Weapon movies bought. (Ed is Mel Gibson’s agent, you know.)

Mariah Wins Two Soul Train Awards! // 2:52 AM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey kept her comeback going Saturday, picking up best album and best single honors at the 20th Annual Soul Train Music Awards.

Carey, who won three Grammys last month, nabbed awards for best-female album with "The Emancipation of Mimi'' and best-female single with "We Belong Together.''

"This has been the biggest and most successful year of my life,'' said Carey, who returned last year after dominating the pop charts for much of the 1990s.

A year ago, Carey's career looked to be fading following a handful of debacles that included a contract buyout by Virgin Records. "You know that whatever doesn't kill you will make you stronger,'' she said.

The Soul Train Music Awards, started by the syndicated music show "Soul Train,'' celebrate artists in R&B, hip-hop and gospel music.

The 2006 honors, hosted by Vivica A. Fox and Tyrese Gibson, will air in syndication beginning March 11.

The awards are determined by a group of radio station professionals, talent managers and performers.

Mariah's 'Glamorized' Line // 4:43 PM EST Updated by Liron

As Mariah Carey well knows, all that Glitters may not be gold. But that's not stopping the Mimi from putting out some real sparklers.

The comeback queen is following in the footsteps of fellow Grammy-winning multihyphenates Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Gwen Stefani, and is set to expand her empire to the fashion world.

Carey has launched her own jewelry and accessories line called Glamorized by Mariah Carey, which is available beginning this week at Claire's and Icing stores nationwide.

In a posting to her Website this week, Carey announced her line's debut.

"Hey Girls, I am so excited to share with you my new jewelry & accessory line," she wrote. "Wear it & you'll be a Hot Tamale."

The line, which she says is high on style and low on price, will be geared toward the pop diva's teen fans and includes earrings, necklaces, bracelets, purses, makeup bags and rings, many featuring the "We Belong Together" singer's trademark butterfly logo.

The Charmbracelet singer, and now designer, has also expressed interest in putting her name to a line of perfume. The scent will reportedly be based on white flowers.

As for Glamorized, Carey joins a successful girl-friendly roster of celebrity lines already carried exclusively by Claire's and Icing stores, including surfer Bethany Hamilton, Raven-Symone, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Ashlee Simpson and Hilary Duff, whose "stuff" line is a big seller at the mall franchises.

Jewelry wasn't the only thing on Carey's mind this week. She also announced that she will attempt to make amends for Glitter by heading back to the big screen in the indie drama Tennessee. The film, shooting this spring, stars Carey as a small-town waitress who sets off with her two brothers to try and find their estranged father.

Carey also took time out this week for a one-on-one Wednesday in the Barbara Walters Oscar Special.

The 35-year-old singer spoke out on a variety of topics, including whether she will ever be a mother.

"I still don't know if I want to have children," she said. "If that's in the cards for me...it's not if I 'want' to have children. I feel like being a celebrity and having kids is a huge responsibility. I would want to make sure I was fully prepared to handle what would happen to those kids when they have to deal with the baggage of having a famous parent."

Bryan Michael Cox Prepares for Mariah's Next Album? // 4:42 PM EST Updated by Liron

Producer builds hits for Carey, Blige, others
Songwriter/producer Bryan Michael Cox is a music lover who plays jazz piano in his spare time. But right now he is on a quest to save R&B.

Several years ago nobody was trying to feel me when I said I was doing R&B," Cox recalls. "But this current hip-hop generation is growing up and finding there's nothing wrong with some R&B in your life."

Those who were not feeling the 28-year-old Atlantan back then are no doubt feeling him now. During the last several years, Cox has been crafting quite a resume, anchored by his work on two Grammy Award-winning blockbusters, Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" and Usher's "Confessions." The former boasts Cox's imprint on the No. 1 R&B/pop hit "Don't Forget About Us." The latter features his handiwork on the crossover hits "Burn," "U Got It Bad" and the title track. (...)

But his solo debut will have to wait. Cox says Usher is itching to get back in the studio. And there is the follow-up to Carey's comeback. Not to mention songs that he, Austin and Dupri are polishing for Whitney Houston.

Reminder: Mariah on the Barbara Walters Special Tonight // 4:19 PM EST Updated by Liron

From humble Long Island, N.Y., roots, Mariah Carey has earned her place on the R&B throne alongside other legendary ladies like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Chaka Kahn and Gladys Knight.

In her wide-ranging interview with Walters, Carey talks about her childhood growing up in a tumultuous interracial family, her broken marriage to Tommy Mottola, her recent emotional breakdown and the album that garnered her three Grammys.

Through all the tough times, Carey says music saved her life.

"From the time I started singing, which was basically by the time I started talking, I knew that music was just something I had to have near me," Carey says.

She says she used to take the radio from the kitchen and put it underneath the covers when she was 4 years old, and just sing along with whatever was on the radio.

"It was always that release for me," she says.

Another release from the mayhem of the record business is enjoying her 12,000-square-foot Manhattan apartment designed by the famous Mario Buata. She took Walters through a tour of the impressive bachelorette pad.

The pop singer escapes there to watch movies in the mermaid room, to play with her famous dog, Jack, in the kitchen and to rest her voice by sleeping in a customized steam room. She even entertains in her living room where her idol Marilyn Monroe's piano is placed, almost as a shrine.

On a floor below, one bathroom is dedicated to Marilyn and another is a playful repository of all things Hello Kitty, gifts mostly from her Japanese fans. It is also there where Carey, 35, becomes Mariah, the superstar.

Carey's closet is bigger than most people's living rooms and still, Mariah says she has nothing to wear.

Through another door, it gets personal, where a "memory room" holds Carey's life in photos.

Inside are memories of a mother disowned by her family for marrying a black man. Memories of her parents' divorce and a life of transience and turmoil. Living in an interracial family caused a lot of the turmoil in her childhood, she says. Mariah's older sister was a prostitute and although Mariah wasn't supposed to know about it, she says she did.

"I wasn't supposed to know things that were going on -- ever -- in my childhood," Mariah says. "But I was inquisitive, and I was intelligent, and I knew. I knew things that I wasn't necessarily supposed to know."

The fireplace in her special room is from her own divorce; its the only piece she kept from her marriage to Tommy Mattola. He was her boss, her mentor, and eventually, her husband. When their marriage was finished, many believed she was too.

Carey hasn't spoken to Mottola since the breakup. But she says she has learned one important life lesson from the relationship: forgiveness.

"I have had to learn that forgiveness is one of the most important things in life," Carey says. "And so, you know, I hope that he forgives me for anything that I did that hurt him. And I forgive him." But Carey's wildly successful latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," is the validation of her talent.

It was last year's best-selling CD -- six times platinum and, for the record, Carey just tied Elvis with 17 No. 1 singles.

To that she has added three Grammys and a performance at the recent ceremony that's being called one of the greatest of her career.

Carey tells Walters she was happy with her Grammys, even though she did not win for album of the year or song of the year.

"You know, it actually means more to me to win the R&B category," Carey says. "I promise you, I am not lying to you. Yes, of course I wanted album of the year. Who didn't want that? And I felt I deserved it. Yeah, that would have been great. But you know what? I am blessed to have gotten the three that I got."

Five years ago, Carey was in a more difficult place. She had an emotional meltdown and went into rehab for a couple of weeks.

"It was a long, long time of being exhausted, and finally just having the straw that broke the camel's back come in and break it," she says.

Carey says she had to hit bottom in order to remind herself of what was important to her.

"What matters is, I am blessed with a gift to make music," Carey says.

As bad as it got for Mariah, she says she never considered suicide. Most of all, she says, she is a survivor.

And the success of her album is even sweeter because of her setbacks. In fact, she says, her CD could just as well have been called, "The Vindication of Mariah Carey."

Tune in for Barbara Walters' Oscar special tonight at 10:00pm ET on ABC.

Stylus Magazine Declares "Emotions" a Classic Music Piece // 4:14 PM EST Updated by Liron

Stylus Magazine's Seconds column examines those magic moments that arise when listening to a piece of music that strikes that special chord inside. That pounding drum intro; a clanging guitar built-up to an anthemic chorus; that strange glitchy noise you've never quite been able to figure out; that first kiss or heartbreak; a well-turned rhyme that reminds you of something in your own past so much, it seems like it was written for you—all of those little things that make people love music. Every music lover has a collection of these Seconds in his or her head; these are some of ours.

Mariah Carey’s love life doesn’t appear to be much of a source of joy for her these days. Lately she’s settled for love as a somewhat unhealthy obsession (“We Belong Together”), a source of nostalgia (“Don’t Forget About Us”) or just a mere nuisance (“Shake It Off”), but it’s been a long time since love made Mariah really want to climb on top of her kitchen table and announce it to the world. It makes sense: Mariah, now in the business over 15 years, is hardly a kid anymore, and until last year, her career this decade hasn’t given her much to shout about. What’s more, her most recent love songs have been some of the best around; if not necessarily giving us the full picture, her heartbreak is still all too palpable.

Still, it’s hard not to miss the old Mariah when listening to 1991’s “Emotions.” The title track off her second album, “Emotions” would be the most blissed-out, utterly delirious love song Mariah (or just about anyone else) would produce in the 90s. After a string of four #1 singles from her first album, mostly consisting of vocal-showcase ballads, Mariah wisely chose to lead her second album with a stylistic follow-up to her upbeat third single “Someday.” She wanted a hip-hop sound similar to the new jack swing of “Someday,” but her label insisted against it; instead, they enlisted the production and writing help of David Cole and Robert Clivilles, then on top of the dance world with their smash hit as C&C Music Factory, “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).”

The teaming would prove to be a wise one. C&C knew how to touch the musical pleasure centers as well as any other dance producers of the time, and Mariah, despite being one of the biggest stars in the world at that point, was still a music nerd at heart. She had an idea for the song’s groove—a riff on “Best of My Love,” a #1 disco smash by The Emotions, one of Mariah’s favorite groups from the 70s. The reference of the title aside, C&C cleverly interpolated the “Best of My Love” groove into a 90s diva house format, never so blatant as to be a ripoff—though The Emotions seemed to think so in the subject of a ’91 lawsuit—but always sticking with the listener in the back of their mind, subconsciously (and deservedly) linking the song to a great history of dance music.

Lyrically, the song is deliciously single-minded. The main line of the chorus seems to take up nearly the half the song, as well it should, being all that really needs to be said. The way Mariah punches the words, “YOU! Got me feeling EMOTIONS!” perfectly embodies the song’s subject, expressing how truly unavoidable this one specific new person in Mariah’s life is and how he brings out feelings in her—good, bad, whatever—almost totally indiscriminately. The world “love” is only mentioned once in the song, the first verse’s great “I’m in love! I’m alive!,” and it never needs to be mentioned again, the range of beautiful feeling brought out by the one chorus line being far more powerful.

The best moment in “Emotions,” though, is wordless. During the song’s second bridge, Mariah breaks it down: “You know the way to make me lose control,” she moans, “when you’re looking into my eyes / You make me feel so…” And then, too overwhelmed with the thought of exactly what she’s made to feel, she emits a cry that can only be described as pure ecstasy, achieving in less than five seconds more than Donna Summer did throughout 17 minutes of “Love to Love You, Baby.” To drive the point home, she follows it up with a low, understated moan. That it comes in a similar point in the song to the similarly orgasmic, wordless cry in “Best of My Love” is obviously no accident, but “Emotions” one-ups even that song’s rapturous break.

Mariah would get happy several more times throughout her career in the similarly heavenly Tom Tom Club-sampling “Fantasy” and Music Box’s “Dreamlover” (which returned again to The Emotions; “Blind Alley” this time). As great as those songs were, and great as her heartbreak songs of today are, nothing can compare to this 1991 lozenge of love, where Mariah did, indeed, have us feeling emotions, and deeper than we ever dreamed of.

Contestant Sings 'Hero' on American Idol 5 // 4:08 PM EST Updated by Liron

Heather Cox, one of the 10 female finalists on the 5th season of "American Idol" sang Mariah's "Hero" on last night's show.

Click here to watch a streaming video of Heather's performance of "Hero."

The comments made after Heather's performance, both from the show's judges and the media show how respected Mariah is as a vocalist and how difficult it is to try to sing her songs:

Paula Abdul: Here's the one big problem: Sorry, but when you sing songs that the great Mariah Carey sings, you run the hugest risk of being compared to icons. And right now, there's no one hotter than Mariah Carey and we're constantly reminded of how brilliant her voice is. It's a big, big, huge risk to take on a song like that. You did a good job but it wasn't great.

Randy Jackson: They hate when I say this, but it's hard for me because I work with Mariah... Paula's absolutely correct, when you choose stylized songs by these kinds of singers, you're gonna pale in comparison because this was their own soul, own heart, own thing so... song choice, song choice, song choice tonight.

Simon Cowell: This is going to sound odd but Paula and Randy actually spoke some sense. The problem is it was kind of like, you know those ghastly pageants when just before the finalists have arrived, somebody gets up to sing, you know, a Mariah song or something, and it's a horrible moment and it did come over a bit like that, it's sort of pointless really. Pointless if you're not gonna be as good as the original, unless you're gonna do something different with the song.

  • Foxes on Idol:
Tyler: I've always wanted to hear this song on the show, but I also wanted to hear it done well. If "well" is synonymous with "flat," Heather succeeded.

  • Curlio.com:
American Idol stalker Heather Cox decided to be brave and perform a song that has never been done on American Idol, "Hero" by Mariah Carey. Doing a Mariah song is risky, but Heather wasn't as bad as she could have been. She was pretty good actually, just not great. Paula said she improved, but picking Mariah is just a bad choice. Randy said that most everyone pales in comparison to Mariah. Simon agreed with Paula and Randy, comparing it to a beauty pageant performance.

  • The Post Chronicle:
Next up was Heather Cox, who sang Hero by Mariah Carey. After her horrible performance last week, the very idea of her attempting Mariah made me cringe. Unfortunately, her singing did as well. This girl just does not have a voice. How did she even get into the top 12? Granted, she did give a better performance than last week, but the bar was set amazingly low. I was quite surprised that she didn't belt the sections of the songs that were written for belting. Very amateurish.

  • PhillyBurbs.com:
Heather Cox seems truly lost on the Idol stage. She set herself up for comparisons to Mariah Carey with a ridiculous version of the hit, "Hero" and then looked like she might die after hearing Simon's comment that her performance was "pointless." Heather would have been better off turning in her resignation on the spot than to suffer what is her almost certain fate – getting kicked off the show this week.

  • TV Fodder:
Heather Cox made a fatal flaw in my book: She performed Mariah Carey. It's a bit overdone and made me feel like I was at a wedding -- without an open bar.

  • Blogcritics.org:
Heather Cox decided to attempt the impossible and took on a Mariah Carey song, namely "Hero". She held her own I thought, weakly but she held it. The big problem, she is not Mariah Carey, has no where near that kind of voice and so she couldn't possibly live up to the original. Gutsy song selection but it may also be a fatal one for her.

  • The Watercooler - TVGuide.com:
Heather, there is a reason nobody has performed Mariah Carey's "Hero" on American Idol. The woman's voice goes from gutter growl to dog whistle at the speed of light; nobody can do what Mimi does. Nice gratuitous name-dropping by the way, Randy Jackson. I'd love to see him try to tell Mariah she sounded "pitchy."
