Mariah Carey Aims To Please On Summer Tour // 11:28 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey's a little annoyed that she's going to travel by bus instead of plane on her upcoming tour — but not for the reasons you might expect.

The singer actually prefers ground transit: Air travel is too dehydrating, and sleep is easier on a bus than on a jet. So what's her problem? She's unhappy that she doesn't have time to decorate the vehicle "Chez Mimi."

"I wanted my bus to be pink, yet lavender," Carey said. "The rolling crib. But I'm going to design a bus eventually. I think all the girls are going to want it because it'll be like a girl's dream bus — the beauty area will be amazing. I can do one for the guys, too. I'm just good with the designing thing."

For now, Carey is happy just to design the content of the tour itself — titled The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour — since she and the musical director, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, are currently planning precisely how the show will go on. While Jackson said on Friday's "Larry King Live" that Madonna's show had inspired him, Carey insists the pair are batting around ideas that aren't as focused on making her stage show "over-the-top theatrical" as they are about "the music, the songs and connecting with the fans."

"Here's the thing," Carey explained. "A lot of people just do their new stuff, and I can do that, but I'm the kind of person who hates to disappoint people, and there are just some people who won't be happy unless they hear a specific song: 'If I don't hear "Fantasy," I'm going to be mad.' So I'm trying to take certain songs that are, dare I say, classics, to new places."

That means Carey's hits, such as "Dreamlover," for instance, will be given a sort of remix treatment, "with me singing on top of any beat the DJ wants," she said. Carey noted that the mixes will vary regionally, changing as the tour travels across the country (it begins on August 5 in Miami; see "Mariah Carey Plots Mimi's Touring Adventure"). It also means that a mixture of hits and deep album cuts could be featured in a "hot medley"; Mariah has mentioned "One Sweet Day," "My All," and "Close My Eyes" as possibilities.

"The concept is to make them newer," she said. "Some songs you don't need to touch, like 'Vision of Love,' we kind of keep that one basic. But we're going way back, and it's not necessarily all #1 hits."

Since Carey's focus is on giving the fans what they want, the singer went so far as to name her tour after a fan's suggestion, which was based on a diary-like book the fan had kept of Mimi's, well, adventures. "There was a letter I wrote to Oprah in it, thanking her for the Legends weekend, and there was a paper about me in it that this girl got an 'A' on," Carey recalled. "And all these little indicators said to me, 'This is the right name for the tour.' Things like that affect me.

"The title does kind of say it all," she continued. "It's like, OK, 'the Emancipation' meant one thing, that was kind of one experience, and now it's going to be a fun adventure for me — to go around the country on this tour bus, meet the fans, and kind of experience the world in a different way. I don't want to get too dramatic, [like] 'It's a journey through my life,' but it is. It's like a party-meets-a-journey-meets-a-show. And I'll probably get a lot of inspiration as a writer from that."

    Mariah: I'll never tell.

She didn't exactly deny it either.
    Tanika: Are there rules?
Mariah: Are there rules to what?
Tanika: To like what you can't do with these gorgeous legs now.

Access Express unveils this 16-foot replica of Mariah Carey's legs! Gillette presented Mariah with their "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess 2006" award as an homage to her famously long limbs which is rumored she insured for a billion dollars! When questioned, the coy Mariah denied nothing.

Mariah: If you did insure your legs, for whatever amount of money, especially a billion dollars? I don't think it's the wisest thing in the world to go and talk about it. Yeah, you'd be like in the house rubbing cream on your legs constantly, never leave it.

Enjoying one of the most extraordinary years of her entire career, Mariah Carey's 6-times platinum Island Records album The Emancipation Of Mimi captured three Grammy awards and recently passed its one-year anniversary on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Mimi includes Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles, "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us," respectively - which tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. Mimi has sold more than 9 million units worldwide to date, making it the biggest-selling album of 2005, and bringing Mariah's career sales more than 160 million units world-wide.

Gracious Mariah Gets Mobbed at Fund-Raiser // 4:04 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey did what she does best last week at the Boys & Girls Club of Newark's "Evening of the Stars" event. Queen Latifah and MTV's big honcho John Sykes were honored at the fund-raiser.

Miss Carey appeared unexpectedly to present Sykes with his award. He founded the VH-1 "Save the Music" program, which raises money for musically inclined city kids, to supplement government cutbacks. In typical Mariah style - pink satin mini, sky-high ankle-strap heels, a riot of diamonds sparkling against bared skin - she stayed the night, enjoying violinist Miri Ben-Ari.

Afterward, she allowed herself to be mobbed by young fans and posed and posed and signed and signed. More than anything else, Mariah Carey loves being loved by her adoring public.

    Local "Mimi" Tour News
--From MLive (Michigan): Singing Mimi: We all know Mariah Carey can sing (well, over-sing), but can she perform? We'll find out when she brings her late summer jaunt, dubbed "Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour," to The Palace of Auburn Hills on Sept. 9. It's her first in more than three years. Named for her alter-ego and comeback album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," it will include the live debut of old and new songs. Tickets go on sale June 2.

--From Orlando Sentinel (Florida): Mimi does Tampa. The eyes and ears of New Tix tell us Mariah Carey's new tour will stop by the St. Pete Times Forum on Aug. 7. No word on when tickets go on sale, but signs (and her Web site) point to June.

--From Daily Record (New Jersey): Back then, there was no way pop megastars on the level of Mariah Carey, Paul Simon, Madonna, Hilary Duff and Shakira would have even acknowledged Atlantic City, much less play there under the aegis of gambling dens. But the town's head-spinning transformation from senior citizen haven to playground of the much-younger and more-affluent makes this summer's headliner schedule what those in the newspaper business used to call a "Dog Bites Man" story. --From Star Tribune (Minnesota): Mariah Carey's 30-city concert tour will not come to the Twin Cities where she has never performed a full concert.

--From Seattle Times (Washington): Summer vacation, grown-up style, is just a concert ticket away. Among big names playing now through September are Pearl Jam; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers; the Dave Matthews Band; Elton John; and Mariah Carey.

Randy Jackson Talks About 'Adventures' Tour // 7:47 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Together for the first time since the star-studded finale, American Idol winner Taylor Hicks and runner-up Katharine McPhee; and judge Randy Jackson sat down for an interview with special guest host Ryan Seacrest on CNN's Larry King Live last night. During the chat, Randy Jackson talked about touring with Mariah Carey this summer.

[ Download video clip here ]

Ryan Seacrest: You've made it clear on the show that you worked with Mariah Carey for a long time now and I read this morning that you're embarking on a tour with her. First tour in the U.S. in three years. What will you be doing with Mariah this time around?
Randy Jackson: I'm actually her musical director, have been that for a long time, and we're putting the tour together.

RS: What does that mean in terms of the tour?
RJ: It means that arranging the songs, putting all the music together, rehearsing the band, putting the band together, the singers, the dancers, the whole kit and caboodle. In fact, I helped greatly with the first two or three Idol tours of the kids that they're going to go on this summer.

So, you know, it's kind of what I do. It's like second nature for me because I played with her for so long and produced and wrote songs with her, so we're like, you know, we're like best pals so it's like, you know, she thinks it and I'm going like "OK, I already got you."

You know we were on the phone yesterday on a conference call for like four hours talking about the show because I had just seen Madonna's show and I'm just, you know, got things rattling in my brain how we really want to make the show the hottest show on earth, you know.

RS: What was the key to her comeback?
RJ: I think, you know, she is probably for me in my estimation one of the greatest talents we've ever had because you have Celine, we're going to keep it real right here, I always keep it real. We have Celine, we have Whitney, great singers, sold 100 million albums, 120 million albums each.

Mariah has sold 165 million albums but most importantly she co-wrote every one of them, co-wrote 19 number one records, co-wrote, co-produced all of them. That's the difference. When you actually are in control of your own destiny, meaning that you can write and you're just not waiting for songwriters to bring you songs, dude that's bigger than anything because what it's basically saying it's you actually did it. You know you do it the other way too but you're more of an actor when you're singing other people's songs.

Carey Caps Off 'Emancipation' Run // 7:58 PM EST Updated by Lynn

It was starting to look grim for fans who were hoping Mariah Carey would tour to support "The Emancipation of Mimi."

She certainly didn't need to. Since its release last year, the album sold more than five million copies, spawned smash hits like "We Belong Together" and won three Grammys, all without her hitting the road.

Plus, Carey didn't even know if she wanted to tour. She dreaded staging a long jaunt, and was taking time to savor the sweet success of her comeback. But after some cajoling from fans, the multi-octave diva realized that she needed to be on stage — that she wanted to celebrate the album that marked one of the sweetest times in her long career.

AP: What took you so long to get on the road?
Carey: (Laughs.) Honestly, it was kind of like the album, it has its own life. And I wanted to allow myself to make videos, to really work the record more than I have ... allow people to experience the album, to live with the songs, to feel the videos and the energy and basically get where I was coming from with this project on that level first.

AP: What are the special things you're planning this time around?
Carey: It's going to be kind of off the cuff ... When I said there may be special guests, that's kind of the way the record was made. It's like, I'm in a studio, someone is in the next room, all of a sudden, me and Snoop made a record together. It wasn't planned. If I happen to be in a city where I know somebody who I collaborated with on the record, you never know, they might want to show up if we have that kind of relationship.

AP: How do you determine which songs you're going to play and which ones you're not going to sing without alienating your fans?
Carey: I feel like I'm a tough critic. When I go to other people's shows that I'm fans of, and if I don't hear my favorite song, I'm like, 'Man, why?' (laughs). I'm going to do my best to please the crowd, but I also want to be able to express myself creatively, and I think that there's a happy medium now. The set list that I'm working with now — I won't reveal it yet, darling (laughs) — but it's a work in progress, it is going to achieve that, because some of the fans really do want to hear an old album cut. And then it's like some of the fans have heard you do 'Hero' 9,000 times and are like whatever.

AP: How much stuff do you haul around on tour?
Carey: I'm in the process of trying to get my bus together because I'm going to go by bus for the first time, because I really do sleep well by driving — not at the wheel (laughs) but I've always been able to sleep in a car, and my main thing is I always need a lot of rest when I tour ... I think it's going to be pretty cool, especially in America, to see the surroundings and really feel where I'm at, as opposed to being whisked into a hotel room at whatever-o-clock in the morning.

AP: Is your dog, Jack, coming?
Carey: Oh yes, Jack has his own section. He's going to have his own little nook. It's already planned out. ... I may have to bring him out every now and then. It depends on the crowd.

AP: Besides Jack, what is a must-have on the bus?
Carey: Really just to make it as private as possible in my little living space where I'll be hanging out and sleeping. As long as I have a TV and a bed and some humidifiers, I'll be all right.

AP: What do you do during your down time?
Carey: I don't know if people realize that for me to tour, I actually have to have a full day and a half off in between shows, whereas most touring artists do every night, and I just can't do that, because I'm very strong, but I'm very delicate in many ways too. So in my down time, the thing that requires the most discipline is not talking. Like, I wouldn't be doing an interview. I wouldn't be talking to anyone, I'd be writing notes, and sitting in a humidified room, sleeping.

AP: Has your voice ever given out on you on tour?
Carey: No, it's never that, I just know my voice. And honestly, the late great, Luther Vandross — who I had the utmost respect for — taught me an invaluable lesson, which is about the humidification, because the tone of his voice, the airy quality, when he would sing in that breathy voice, there's a similarity that we have. He would say, 'The best place for us is a really warm climate, and you really need to make sure you have humidifiers around yourself all the time.'

AP: With all the success you've had with this album, has it become one of your most special?
Carey: This and 'Butterfly' are my two favorites because they mark two very special significant times in my life, so this will always be a favorite of mine. And I just love that songs like 'Shake It Off' were allowed to be singles. In the past, I would immediately get, 'It's too urban, you can't put it out.' The experience of this record has just been so much fun for me, and just the freedom, and the title was very apropos, because this has been a lot of freedom for me as an artist.

AP: So now that you're free and there's been an emancipation ...
Carey: Now we're having an adventure.

Mariah Asks 'Idol' Judge To Spice Up Tour // 3:57 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey is tapping a longtime friend -- "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson -- to help her mix things up a bit on her "Adventures of Mimi" tour, which kicks off in August.

"With this tour, I'm going to be working on some different arrangements for some of the older songs, to kind of like, give it a little more life to them," Carey recently told The Associated Press. "That's not to say they're going to sound totally different and to freak anybody out ... (but) I love re-singing songs to different music."

Carey and Jackson have been meeting to discuss how she'll spice up some of her old hits, and Jackson might even join her on a few dates.

"Randy Jackson is my musical director, and he has been for many years, even before 'American Idol,"' she noted.

Carey, who hasn't toured since 2003, is still riding high off the success of last year's "The Emancipation of Mimi" album, which gave her a huge comeback, with hits like "We Belong Together" and three Grammy awards.

She said cajoling from fans helped convince her to get back on the road.

"I genuinely want to tour with these new songs, as well as older hits," she told The AP. "These new songs mean so much to me, this time of my life has been so wonderful for me, and I want to experience that with my fans."

"The Adventures of Mimi" tour, which begins Aug. 5 in Miami and ends Oct. 10 in Phoenix, will make stops in 30 cities across the U.S.

Mariah Carey coming to the Pepsi Arena // 9:03 AM EST Updated by Casey

She's won five Grammys and gone platinum several times over. But there's one thing Mariah Carey hasn't done -- played a concert in Albany.

That's going to change on Sept. 1 when Carey brings her "Adventures of Mimi" tour to the Pepsi Arena. She'll be joined by opening act Sean Paul. Arena officials made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Over the past year, Carey has staged an amazing comeback, selling more than six million copies of her latest album.

This won't be the first time Carey has been to the Capital Region. Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady was chosen as the site for her first concert special in 1993, and the theatre is featured in the video for her hit "Hero."

Concert Promoter Stu Green said, "She did promise that she would come back and play Albany because that really helped get her career really jump-started and move onto that direction."

Tickets for the Pepsi Arena concert go on sale June 2. Prices range from $20 to $155.

Mariah Carey Plots Mimi Touring Adventure // 10:34 PM EST Updated by Maggie

Now that Mimi's been emancipated for a while, she's ready to have a little adventure — so Mariah Carey's taking her on one, launching her first full-scale North American arena tour, which she's calling The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, The Tour.

"My summer tour is what I'm gearing up for next," Carey said. "I'm really excited about it."

Carey has played U.S. arenas before, but she usually peppers her tours with smaller theater dates as well. Not this time. Carey has also allotted a break between each date to recover on her first tour since 2003. "As a singer, I need a certain amount of vocal rest, where I just don't talk before I do a show," Carey explained. "On tour it's like really hardcore singing moments and then resting."

Some of those hardcore singing moments on this tour will be within songs from her six-times-platinum The Emancipation of Mimi album, but Carey is also planning to revisit hits and deep album cuts from her 15-year catalog, including "Vision of Love," "My All" and "Close My Eyes." She's also considering including one of the 25 ring tones she recently wrote and produced for Pepsi, so that she can show off her "creative tangents."

"A friend of mine was over and we were going through different concepts for the tour, and he said, 'You should do one of the ring tones!' " she laughed. "So I'm actually thinking about doing the one we're doing the commercial for," called "Time of Your Life."

Opening the two-month trek for the first half will be Sean Paul, while other "surprise" guests remain to be announced. The tour launches August 5 in Miami and wraps October 10 in Phoenix. Tickets go on sale June 2, and despite Carey's reputation as a diva, the prices are comparatively affordable, in the $20-$155 range.

"People ask me, 'Why don't you just go on tour and charge huge amounts of money? Do these small venues, but charge thousands and thousands of dollars to go in,' " Carey previously explained. "Because I have fans of all different ages and different money ranges, and they can't afford to go out and spend that kind of money. Not everybody has a budget to go out and go really high-end" (see "Mariah Wants All Fans To See Her — And Even Smell Like Her").

Before Carey kicks off her tour, she will end her concert hiatus with a Pepsi Smash Concert featuring Chris Brown scheduled for July 29 at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

Hot again, Carey launches a summer tour // 1:33 AM EST Updated by Casey

Now that Mimi has gotten her act together, she's taking it on the road. Having re-established herself at the top of the pop heap last year with her six-times-platinum The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey is launching her first U.S. tour since 2003.

Called The Adventures of Mimi, it will kick off Aug. 5 in Miami and take the star to more than 30 cities. (Sean Paul will open a number of shows.)

"I've always associated going to a show with summer, and the sense of freedom that evokes," Carey says. "Summertime is the best time for tours, I think. Not that I'm the queen of touring."

The singer has indeed hardly been a constant fixture on the concert circuit. She says, "I need a day and a half of complete vocal rest between shows," which makes tour logistics tricky.

Before recording Emancipation, Carey "was on tour for a while, taking two days off between shows, which left me in a great place vocally. And now, because I'm at a really good place in my life and career, I want to document it."

Carey will, in fact, be filming the journey, for which she'll even use a tour bus. "I had a small one in Europe, but I didn't sleep on it or anything. Someone, I won't say who, told me, 'The bathroom may be a little small for you.' "

Though she jokes about "my reputation as a diva," Carey is keen that her Adventures bring her closer to the audience.

"I know that my fans already understand who I am. Sometimes I think they get me more than I get myself. But I want everyone who sees these shows to get a better understanding of me, my personal side, by the time they leave."

To that end, the star will mix hits from Emancipation and previous albums with deeper cuts.

"There's a song Close My Eyes from Butterfly, and girls have told me that it helped save their lives after abusive childhoods and relationships. I want there to be intimate moments — not a woe-is-me thing, but a chance for people to recognize that we've all been through things, and we can connect through music."

She won't disappoint the faithful. "I know people want to hear certain songs, and would be disappointed if I sang, say, Vision of Love and didn't give it my all — no pun intended, because My All will also be on the set list."

And don't be surprised if some of Carey's hip-hop collaborators show up as special guests.

"It depends on who's in town and available, but there are artists I have enough of a relationship with — Jermaine Dupri, Busta Rhymes. When I'm in L.A., maybe Snoop will be around."

Note: According to USATODAY.com, Sean Paul is the opening act for several of the shows including Tampa, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, New York, East Rutherford, Albany, Hershey, Washington, and Auburn Hills.

The Trouble with 'Idol'? // 11:14 AM EST Updated by Maggie

[T]he reliance on oversinging is . . . an unfortunate habit that did not begin on "American Idol," he says. The show simply gave it a forum. An impossibly huge and, unfortunately or not, influential forum.

"When Mariah [Carey], instead of singing the notes as written, started riffing around the notes, making clusters around the melody -- that's when it happened," Love says. "The problem is, she started doing it so much you lost track of where the melody actually was. And she made that really popular. It's a style of singing that's interesting here and there, but a pain in every single song.

"And unless you really practice and slow it down, you can't imitate it. Mariah got up there with her incredible voice and said, 'Hey, look what I can do!' But not everybody can do that -- and a lot of people are trying. 'American Idol' begs them to. But it's like Luther Vandross said: 'A lot of singers think they're being paid by the note.' He could have done all those trills, but he didn't need to."

    . . .

Voice therapist Jackie Presti and Chicago cabaret singer Beckie Menzie agree. Both also cite Mariah Carey. "Especially early on, what a good use of her voice," Presti says.

    . . .

He grows testy when we mention the Whitmariahtina triumvirate.

"Mariah Carey? Oh, come on," he sneers. "If you asked who was the most famous, then yes -- Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera. But I didn't think that was your question. Mariah Carey ... is a little trick pony. She leverages her range like she should, but it's not new or unique. She's borrowing from other people. Stevie Wonder, Elton John -- Aretha Franklin, if you need a woman -- these people, in my view, are the ones who left a unique fingerprint in singing and interpretation."

Mariah to Star in a CBS Special? // 4:53 PM EST Updated by Lynn

As previously reported, Mariah performed at New York City's Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, May 17th when CBS introduced its fall lineup.

Mariah's performance was one of the highlights of the event. People reports:

To the delight of the audience of advertisers, Mariah Carey, who will star in a CBS special, took the stage looking slim and healthy in a black spaghetti-strap cocktail dress. She sang "We Belong Together," ending with, "Thank you! See you in the fall!"

Pitchfork Reviews "Say Somethin'" Dance Mix // 2:52 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey: "Say Somethin' (Morales Stereo Anthem Mix)"
    Genre: R&B/House

David Morales and Mariah, they go back like X and pacifiers, so it's only fitting he's around to bask in Mariah's post-Mimi opulence. If any guy not named Frankie Knuckles can trade in house music clichés, I guess it's Morales. Mariah, however, flips her portion of the script, playing the part of low-tempo diva to a T (Is it too early for a Glitter remake?). By the way, don't expect anything remotely Neptunes-y when you hit play on this 10-minute monster-- the only remnants of her duet with Mr. Snoop are a few lyrical snippets. The rest of the track has been rejiggered and recalibrated for maximum PLURality.

The Mail Bag // 2:20 PM EST Updated by Casey

Who knew? She's been up and down, but through it all, Mariah Carey's fans apparently haven't abandoned her. We heard from plenty of them in the wake of our review (Media Mix, May 16) of her new commercial touting the joint Pepsi-Motorola ringtone promotion. Here's a sampling:

It is with great distress and sad pity that I read yet another composition infused with liquid venom and directed at Mariah Carey. The first question that comes to mind is: Don't you have anything better to do? Are you really so unhappy with your life and very existence that the only thing you can find to occupy your time is picking on people more talented than you? So far, I know absolutely no one who did not find Mariah's Pepsi commercial extremely humorous, except, of course, for the asinine excuse for a human being that is you.

    Erica Wallace

I have read your superfluous review of Mariah Carey's promotional ad for Pepsi/Motorola. Had any other artist been the focal point, would the ad have been better? The commercial is just that, a commercial. It is nothing more than a lighthearted one-minute clip that people will remember. While you admit in your review that Mariah's scene is glamorous, you continue on to chastise her for "mugging for the camera, shamelessly of course." Pardon my inquisitiveness, but is that not the job she was supposed to do? Would you rather Mariah hide in the background, not show her face and sing her tune with a cloak of anonymity?

    Trong Nguyen, University of California-Irvine

What the hell? Are you assuming that all of Mariah Carey's fans are 9-year-old girls who have no interest in musical talent, but are stunned by production values. . . . OK, fine. It's certainly not a masterpiece of an advertisement, but the song is catchy and grabs the attention of the younger audience. The "glitzy" production values, with Mariah flaunting her stuff, are part and parcel of the package.

    Che Hope

The stench of your biased review of Mariah's commercial is on the verge of frying the motherboard of my computer! The Chicago Sun-Times is notorious for slamming Mariah every chance it gets. How unprofessional and pathetic of this newspaper to repeatedly attempt to slander her. It's no wonder Mariah's mother has never mentioned being raised in the Chicago area. Kudos to Mariah's mom and to Mariah for the hilarious television ad. As for the Sun-Times, I hope it spontaneously combusts one of these days.

    Dan Shannon

The Mariah Carey Pepsi commercial is one of the best Pepsi has had in a long time. It's very clean and fun. The dancing may not be spectacular like the Britney Pepsi commercial, but that's because Mariah is a singer, not a dancer. It's about her voice and her lyrics. Mariah is at the top of her game, and this ad is good for her and Pepsi/Motorola. I drink Coke, but the ad has made me switch to Pepsi.

    Andrew Leo

Has your publication run out of music, movies, television shows and restaurants to review? You are doing commercials now? I may be mistaken, but commercials aren't meant to be taken seriously and aren't supposed to be looked at in such depth. It's Pepsi and Mariah for crying out loud -- two subjects that should never be taken too seriously.

Mariah Performs at CBS Upfront // 1:12 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Each of the networks is unveiling its fall lineup to advertisers this week, in hopes of selling commercial spots in advance for the fall season. This process is known as the upfront.

CBS on Wednesday, May 17, at Carnegie Hall in New York City, unveiled a fall schedule with remarkably few changes, opting to go with only four new shows and to cancel its long-running Sunday night movie.

The CBS upfront show maintained its reputation as a big, splashy affair, highlighted by a performance by singer Mariah Carey, who appeared after a clip sequence that promoted the network's upcoming specials.

Is Mariah Better Off Single? // 9:14 PM EST Updated by Casey

Music mogul Tommy Mottola is responsible for Mariah's big break, but according to the five-octave diva, he was also responsible for her heartache. The two wed in June 1993 in a lavish ceremony, but Mariah claimed discontent and psychological abuse from the start. When the couple divorced five years later, Mariah rebelled the only way she knew how -- she donned a pair of Daisy Dukes, started hanging with ODB, and added a saucy hip-hop edge to her music.

Vote now at AOL Music on whether you think Mariah is better off with or without Tommy Mottola.

Blender Magazine: Mariah, The Incredible // 2:18 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah is featured twice in the upcoming issue of "Blender Magazine" which hits the newsshelves on May 23rd. On the cover, there is a picture of Mariah with the caption: "Mariah Carey: I'm an authentic diva." Below is Mariah's interview with the magazine exclusively given to Mariah Daily:

    The Incredibles
In the half-decade of Blender's existence, no five people have influenced music more than these titanic talents. At least, no one we were able to get on the phone...

    Mariah Carey (Singer-songwriter), #5

Five years ago, you made the movie and album, Glitter
    The debacle.

Okay, the debacle. How do you look back on that experience now?
As a blessing in disguise. It was a very humbling experience, which is something we all need to go through now and again. Especially in the entertainment industry. It got me into a much better place spiritually. When you go through that kind of thing--when you're being attacked, first by the media, but also dealing with personalities in the music business, moguls who are ultra-powerful -- it's important to take a break and realize that you deserve to be happy, you deserve to be able to create music that you love.

You've had 17 No. 1 Singles - tied with Elvis for the second-most in history. Unless something terrible happens, you'll probably surpass the Beatles' record of 20. That's got to cross your mind every once in awhile.
It's not a goal of mine. Elvis and the Beatles? We're talking about the two most legendary entities in music ever. But I am comfortable with what I've achieved. I don't need to pass anyone. I was talking to Quincy Jones the other day -- not to name-drop [laughs], but he came by my video shoot with Snoop Dogg. And he said, "you know what, you really did it." And that was one of the most incredible compliments I've ever had. He was talking about how it's very easy to do it one time, in the beginning. But to repeatedly have success and make it seem as though it's the first time every time, that's really what makes the difference.

One of the real measures of your impact on music is American Idol. For awhile there, the show was like one big Mariah impersonation contest. Do you watch it?
Everybody asks me about American Idol, so I've put it on every once in awhile. If you're saying I’ve had a cultural impact, then that's a big compliment.

You've had another kind of cultural impact, too: There's been a lot of baby making over the years to your old ballads.
And it's funny, because I'm totally repressed in that way! [laughs] Or I was back then. I was just a baby myself!

What do you think of pop music these days?
I think this is a very good time. I'm very partial to R&B and hip-hop and gospel music. I really like Keyshia Cole a lot. Dem Franchize Boyz are doing their thing. Bow Wow's new record is in heavy rotation in my car. I think that's why it's such a good moment -- because these kinds of records are getting much more airplay than they would have a while ago.

A lot of people were shocked that you got shut out on the 2006 Grammy Telecast. How did you feel about it?
I know this is gonna sound like I'm lying – even Barbara Walters was like, "Come on, Mariah" - but the three Grammys I did win were so great. Don't forget, I haven't won a Grammy since my first album. I had only two. Jay-Z came to my house once, and he was looking at the awards in my awards case -- and he didn't even know I saw him do this. And he was looking up at the top shelf where my Grammys were, and he was making this face like, "Huh?" She only has two Grammys? I'm pretty sure she has more than that." So when I got to the Grammy telecast, I already knew I had won three awards in the pre-show, in all those R&B categories, which is what I've always strived to do as an artist. So I was happy. My awards case was hooked up.

What's the vibe like when you're in the same room with your fellow pip divas? Do you all secretly hate each other?
You know, it's rare that I'm in the same room with -- well, I don't really know who exactly you're talking about. Honestly, they call everybody a diva today. But you know, my mother is an opera singer. And when you have an opera singer mother, you hear the word "diva" from the day you're born. It's true! I've been hearing the word 'diva' since the day I was born. So if someone wants to call me a diva -- well, I guess I'm an authentic one, honey.

    Major Moments
September 21, 2001 - Glitter opens on the heels of September 11 and after Carey's stint in a psychiatric facility. The movie bombs, earning only $2.4 million on its opening weekend.

April 12, 2005 - Carey releases The Emancipation of Mimi, which debuts at No. 1 and earns Carey her highest-ever first-week album sales, selling 403,755 copies.

February 8, 2006 - Carey receives eight nominations and wins three Grammys, after a 16-year drought.

    Rock's Nastiest Divorces
    "Prisoner of Love"

    Mariah Carey & Tommy Mottola

    Irreconcilable Differences

Carey has called the house she shared with then-Sony Music CEO Mottola "Sing Sing," a nod both to the infamous prison and to the only activity her husband ever wanted her to engage in. The pair wed in 1993, simultaneously quelling and substantiating rumors that Carey had been having an affair with the already-married Mottola and reaping the benefits career-wise. Awkwardly, Mottola remained her record company boss for a time after their 1998 divorce, and Carey took none-too-subtle jabs at him in several videos: "Butterfly shows her trapped in a mansion; in "Honey" she's handcuffed to a chair and menaced by an Italian-looking mobster. Carey later hinted that Mottola has tried to sabotage her career, on one occasion stealing her song ideas and giving them to rival diva Jennifer Lopez. The ex-couple reportedly haven't spoken since the divorce.

Expert Testimony: "Tommy, God love him, what is he, three-foot-two?" asks Tawny Kitaen. "I've had opportunities to be with some very heavy hitters who could help my career, but I wouldn't sell my soul.”

12 Notable Moments in Wu-Tang History // 1:04 PM EST Updated by Maggie

1995: Wu-Tang goes pop, part 1 (ODB and Mariah)

In 1995, pristine pop princess Mariah Carey was hungry for hip-hop credibility. So she hooked up with a producer who epitomized glossy slickness (Diddy) and a rapper who embodied scuzzy rawness (Ol' Dirty Bastard) for the remix to "Fantasy." As ODB unforgettably screeched, he and Mariah did, in fact, go together like babies and pacifiers; the Ol' Dirty dog was no liar, and kept the fantasy hot like fiya.

Gossip: Mariah's 'Dinners With The Mafia' // 6:18 AM EST Updated by Casey

Pop singer Mariah Carey has been linked to the latest mob scandal to rock America.

An undercover agent has claimed in court that Mariah and her ex-husband, Sony Records chief Tommy Mottola, used to wine and dine with a leading Mafia boss.

FBI agent Joaquin Manuel Garcia has been dubbed the modern Donnie Brasco after infiltrating the New York mobs.

He fooled gangsters into thinking he was Goodfella wannabe Jack Falcone.

Garcia claims Greg DePalma, a 74-year-old alleged acting capo for New York's feared Gambino family, brought him into the mob.

He said DePalma bragged about his dinners with Mariah and Mottola at Valbella restaurant, a five-star eatery in Greenwich, Connecticut, which the mob were allegedly shaking down for protection money.

On the secretly recorded tape, DePalma described Carey as "very nice, very quiet, reserved".

A mob informant, Peter Forchetti, then chimed in: "She looks nice now. She looks unbelievable."

DePalma bragged that he forced the restaurant boss to let another mobster dine for free -the bill included an $11,000 bottle of Chateau Lafitte.

He also boasted that he forced the restaurateur to give him seven bottles of equally expensive wine for his doctor.

Garcia is being compared to Donnie Brasco, the former FBI agent who infiltrated the mob and became the subject of a 1997 movie starring Johnny Depp.

He is testifying in a closed Manhattan federal courtroom against DePalma, who is charged with racketeering.

A spokesman for Mottola denied that he had ever met the accused mobster.

A spokesman for Carey did not return calls.

    The trial continues.

[ Access Hollywood: Mariah Responds To Christina's Diss ]

On tonight's Access Hollywood, Mariah Carey responds to accusations made by Christina Aguilera in the June issue of GQ magazine.

Aguilera was quoted in GQ saying, "She was never cool to me... to the point that one time, we were at a party and I think she got really drunk, and she had just really derogatory things to say to me... but it was at that time that she had that breakdown, so she might have been very medicated."

In response to Aguilera's quote, the multiple Grammy winner, Carey, told Access Hollywood, "I had hoped that Christina was in a better place now than the last time I saw her when she showed up uninvited at one of my parties and displayed questionable behavior. It is sad yet predictable that she would use my name at this time to reinvent past incidents for her promotional gain. It is in my heart to forgive and I will keep her in my prayers."

Aguilera added in a statement to Access Hollywood, "At this point in my life I do not want any bad energy with anyone. My intentions were not to upset Mariah with any statements that were published or taken out of context. I have all the respect in the world for her."

Mariah can't Carey Pepsi, Moto ad // 2:04 PM EST Updated by Casey

In its longstanding bid to become the most youthful of all cell phone providers, Motorola this week formally kicks off its big joint venture with the ever-youthful Pepsi Cola -- a "Cool Tones" promotion that will give interested cell phone users access to some 150 original music and voice ring tones from a variety of Grammy-winning artists and producers, ranging from Mariah Carey to the All-American Rejects.

To tout "Cool Tones," a new 60-second commercial called "Restaurant" from Pepsi agency of record BBDO/New York starring Carey begins hitting the air this week. Fans of Carey no doubt will find the big-budget, super-glitzy spot a delight. It opens simply enough in a nice restaurant where a couple is seen dining. The gentleman's cell phone suddenly starts to ring with the sound of Carey in full throttle.

The scene shifts to a sound studio where we see a big music video production number in full swing. Carey does a lot of bumping and grinding and mugging for the camera, shamelessly of course, as she croons "Time of Your Life," the title of her ring tone for the joint Pepsi-Motorola promotion.

While Carey croons, a bunch of chorus people clad in white jackets and black pants execute a tightly choreographed, but rather uninteresting, dance routine around her. At one point, Carey (or more precisely her stunt double) is seen on a motorcycle zooming over a giant neon Pepsi sign. Alas, Motorola doesn't get the same kind of visibility in the spot.

Carey's music video moment eventually reaches a very fevered pitch, at which point we quickly cut back to the restaurant setting where this heated fantasy began, only to discover the singer's overwrought performance has created shock waves strong enough to leave the eatery a shambles.

    Wow! Not.

Its glittery production values notwithstanding, the fantastical "Restaurant" isn't very shocking. And certainly not gripping.

    Mariah Mentions

--From Boston Herald: Mariah Carey posed in this abbreviated number for Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball. Either the dear girl has a serious moth problem, or she prefers dresses with a choice of neckholes.

--From Oregon Live: Perpetrator: Mariah Carey CD: "Glitter," the 2001 soundtrack to Carey's down-in-flames movie of the same, shudder-inducing name. Why she owes us: Mariah's back on top now, but we're still haunted by memories of tracks such as "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica").

--From UK's Times Online: Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant once, famously, told the American songwriter Diane Warren: "We don't do passion." By which he meant? "That I’m not Mariah Carey." And you imagine Carey lathering that same line with demented coloratura and know immediately what Tennant means.

CNN Documentary Examines Celebrity Obsession // 2:35 PM EST Updated by Maggie

As stargazers wait for the birth of Angelina Jolie’s & Brad Pitt's baby, CNN will take viewers on a wild ride during a paparazzi pursuit for money-making shots of Jolie. On Chasing Angelina—Paparazzi and Celebrity Obsession, CNN talks to all sides of the celebrity media craze so viewers can decide how far is too far to go for news about stars’ lives. The documentary premiers tonight at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. and airs again May 14 at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

According to Larry Hackett, managing editor of People magazine, the tip that Jolie was pregnant came directly from the star’s representatives. People avoids being deliberately “mean” to celebrities, Hackett explained. Managing editor Peter Castro says the magazine does hold back some stories out of a commitment to responsibility and fairness. This means the magazine can be rewarded with big scoops when stars do decide to go public.

And many stars admit to cooperating with entertainment press. In the CNN documentary, Mariah Carey and Ashlee Simpson acknowledge they enjoy posing for celebrity photographer Kevin Mauzer because he doesn’t “stakeout” celebrities. He photographs stars from the red carpet—with the blessings from the stars themselves.

Conversely, Frank Griffin, who heads paparazzi agency Bauer-Griffin, does not ask publicists or the stars for permission to take what may be highly valuable shots: “It’s almost an auction … you sell them to the highest bidder.”

In addition to celebrity magazines and entertainment TV programs, celebrity gossip blogs are kicking into high gear. Defamer.com’s Mark Lisanti and Jossip.com’s David Hauslaib tell CNN they generally don’t care about offending stars or publicists to deliver their constant updates—it’s what their gossip-crazy fans expect.

Oprah's Legends Reunite // 9:46 AM EST Updated by Maggie

The power of Oprah was on display once again on Thursday night, as she partied with Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and many more in New York.

One year ago, Oprah welcomed the people she admired to her Legends Ball. But on Thursday, Access Hollywood’s Tim Vincent was there for a Legends reunion important enough to lure Janet and her new body.

And talk about fabulous at 40!

Janet, who showed up arm in arm with boyfriend Jermaine Dupri, looked stunning in a black vintage Aliah suit, revealing her newly slimmed down tiny waist.

“I just went in my closet and threw it on,” Janet smiled.

Miss Jackson turns the big 4-0 on Tuesday and she has much to celebrate. Her new “20 Years Old” album is due out in September, and then she will begin her world tour.

So what does Janet have planned for her b-day?

    “Party, I guess,” she laughed.

Filmmaker Lee Daniels Speaks Highly of Mariah // 5:30 AM EST Updated by Casey

Lee Daniels, the producer behind the forthcoming independent family drama, "Tennessee" (co-starring Mariah Carey), was recently interviewed by author Keith Boykin. Daniels expressed excitement about working with Mariah, whom he describes as "an underestimated genius." Below are excerpts from the interview.

Keith Boykin: You decided to become a director to be a better producer?

Lee Daniels: Yes. My next film is with Mariah Carey. It's called Tennessee. I'm going to be working as a producer and then I'm going to direct a film with Lenny Kravitz. Directing Shadowboxer helped me to become a better producer.

KB: Who do you love working with in Hollywood?

LD: I love working with Mos Def because he's always a surprise and you never know what to expect. I adore Monique because she gives me her soul. In Shadowboxer, it's her first serious role, she plays a crackhead. I love working with Macy Gray because she reminds me of what I guess it would be like to work with Billie Holiday. She's pure genius. I'm very excited about working with Mariah Carey because she's an underestimated genius.

KB: Interesting. She's definitely a musical powerhouse, but I don't know if she's known for her acting, especially after Glitter.

LD: But people didn't see that [other] movie she did, WiseGirls, with Mira Sorvino. She was to die for. I saw that movie and she was brilliant. Everybody wants to point to the bad. We always look to the bad instead of looking to the good. An actor is as good as his or her director. And I think that people want to point fingers and hate. It's instinctive. It's nature. And that does not make for great film makers.

KB: You've mentioned Mariah Carey, Mos Def, Macy Gray. Those are all musicians who are transforming to acting. What do you think about that trend?

LD: I think some of the most brilliant actors come from a place of comedy or music. They're all artists at the end of the day. And I find that when you're working with comedians or musicians they're more hungry for direction and more eager to jump through hoops. Hence often times brilliance comes.

Mariah Producer Signs New Artist via Cell Phone // 6:22 AM EST Updated by Casey

"I had her sing to me on a cell phone from a mall in Canada," says producer/songwriter Ben Margulies, "and I heard something really special in her voice." That voice belongs to Montreal vocal sensation Lisa Lavie, who is now working with Margulies in his Santa Barbara studio, finishing tracks for her forthcoming debut. The first completed song, "If I Only Knew", appears on the soundtrack for the Jeff Bridges movie, STICK IT.

Mariah: An Influential In Music // 7:58 PM EST Updated by Lynn

The May 15th issue of New York Magazine appointed some 200 individuals as the most influential people in New York in 24 categories, which included theater, food, fashion, religion, sports, education, politics and music.

Mariah Carey, Jay-Z and BMG chairman Clive Davis were other New Yorkers among the noted influentials in the music category.

    Mariah Carey, Vocalist
Whitney Houston may have introduced melisma (the vocally acrobatic style of lending a word an extra syllable or twenty) to the charts, but it was Mariah—with her jaw-dropping range—who made it into America’s default sound. Every time you turn on American Idol, you are watching her children.

Profiling Jermaine Dupri // 11:46 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Although he has had less than stellar results working on his own releases as an artist, Jermaine Dupri has played a key role in producing some of the biggest r&b, hip hop, and pop hits of the past decade. He has produced massive hits from Mariah Carey, Bow Wow, Usher, TLC, and many more.

    Mariah Carey
Jermaine Dupri first worked with Mariah Carey on her hit single "Always Be My Baby" from the 1995 album Daydream. Although Carey's career took a downward turn, Jermaine Dupri continued to lend his skills to her albums including the dismal 2002 album Charmbracelet. The perseverance of both paid off with the massive success of 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi. Jermaine Dupri was one of a small army of contributors to the #1 smash single "We Belong Together."

For MTV Fans, a Parallel Universe of Programs: At Once Online and on TV // 8:01 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Beginning this summer with the MTV Video Music Awards (scheduled for August 31, 2006) and continuing in the fall with the cable channel's live afternoon program, "Total Request Live," MTV will offer two simultaneous versions of each show, one on television and another, focusing on a behind-the-scenes narrative, on its broadband channel, MTV Overdrive.

The Overdrive component will feature a sort of video digression that will continue to stream live while the television show is broadcasting commercials. For example, if a viewer wants to watch an entire music video after a snippet is shown on the "Total Request Live" video countdown, or take a backstage tour with Jamie Foxx after he finishes his onstage appearance on the set of TRL, Overdrive will be the place to turn.

It is not yet clear how often MTV will supplement TRL with a live feed on Overdrive — maybe every day, perhaps only one or three times a week.

"We're going to let the audience tell us how often they want it," said Ben White, vice president for digital media at MTV. The bigger the celebrity visiting the TRL set, the more likely the network will be to try to milk extra video material out of every part of the celebrity's visit, with backstage interviews about music and fashion and life in the spotlight.

"If I'm a Mariah Carey fan, when she comes on TRL it's on my calendar for a week," he said. "I can't get enough Mariah Carey."

--As previously reported, Oprah Winfrey's "Legends Ball" special is scheduled to air May 15th at 8pm ET/PT on ABC. Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle and Dionne Warwick are just a few of the famous faces who took part in Oprah Winfrey's "Legends" weekend celebration, held last year, to honor African-American women who have paved the way for others.

--From CNN.com: Based on CNN.com's informal worst-song survey, "How to create a bad song?" Involve butterflies: Mariah Carey (who's quite fond of butterflies) earned votes. Sing it loud, sing it strong: Vocal acrobatics earned many listeners' enmity. They singled out Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You," with its glass-breaking high notes; several Whitney Houston songs, notably "I Will Always Love You;" and, in general, Mariah Carey's indulgent melismas.

--From Telegram: For downloading songs such as Mariah Carey’s “Against All Odds” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” an Assumption College student from Brockton and a University of Massachusetts student from Leominster have made the music industry’s latest target list in its Internet anti-piracy campaign.

Samuel L. Jackson's Perks Not As Bad As J-Lo, Mariah Carey // 12:24 AM EST Updated by Casey

Actor Samuel L. Jackson is claiming that his list of perks while on the set are 'small potatoes' compared to divas like Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey, according to a published report.

The actor explains, "My perk packages are easy"

"All I need is a multi-region DVD player, a car big enough to put my golf clubs in and to play golf twice a week."

Apparently Jackson's list of demands assist him during his work, and that he isn't difficult to please.

And the actor claims there are others that are way worse than he is.

He says, "Asking for a cook, a trainer, three bodyguards, a personal make-up artist, a house with seven bedrooms and a butler. Now that kind of stuff is extreme."

Jennifer Lopez, who at one point in her career reportedly insisted that everything in her dressing room must be white, is just one example. Another star rumored to have rediculous demands is Mariah Carey. Not surprisingly, the singer will not accept anything but first class for her dog when they travel by plane.

And last, but not least, actress Sharon Stone, whose list of perks while working on the set of 'Basic Instinct 2' was reportedly five pages long.

Meanwhile, Samuel L. Jackson will be starring in the much anticipated film, 'Snakes On A Plane'. The film is set for release later this year (06).

Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman Speaks of Mariah // 6:00 AM EST Updated by Casey

Singer Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men was recently interviewed by The Press-Enterprise and offered comments about Mariah. Below is an excerpt from the article.

Working with Mariah Carey -- for the No. 1 hit "One Sweet Day" -- led to more attention for the group in 1995.

"She's an incredible talent," Stockman said of Carey. "She was in the business a little before we were. I was a fan myself; it was cool. Once you sit down and talk to her on an informal basis, with the shoes off and the sandals and slippers on, her views and perspectives are just as normal as anyone else's."

--"The Emancipation of Mimi" is included in a feature titled "Albums worth the ten bucks" from The Lantern (Ohio State University's newspaper): Yes, the album is a year old. Yes, it has been released twice. However, no artist had a better year than Mariah. This album was the best selling of 2005 for obvious reasons. With hits such as "We Belong Together," "Shake It Off" and "Don't Forget About Us" this is an album for any collection. It's definitely Mariah at her best, but should only be purchased once.

--AceShowbiz.com has published the April 2006 edition of its Celebrity Buzz list. Mariah captured the #4 position.

--"Say Somethin'" has slipped to the #11 position on the Top 100 Videos chart on MSN Music.

--In addition to "Fantasy," "Can't Let Go," "Anytime You Need A Friend," and "All I Want For Christmas Is You," the "Butterfly," "Forever (Live Version)," and "Emotions" music videos have been added to Mariah's section on iTunes.

    Mariah Mentions
--From News 10 Now: The Turning Stone plans to host some big upcoming shows this summer. Entertainment Director Sam Madonia said Comedian Larry the Cable Guy and the rock band Heart were recently scheduled. The resort is also working on hosting Mariah Carey, Brad Paisley, and Carly Simon.

--From MiamiHerald.com: That little something extra is what's getting [Tory] Burch noticed and noticed and . . . you get it. Let's just say once Oprah drools over your stuff, as she did on her talk show last spring, you're not going to be exactly struggling (the designer's website got like 7 million hits the following day). Then Mariah Carey went slinking around in one of Burch's signature rhinestone tunics -- and nothing else -- in the We Belong Together video, and Burch's fate was sealed.

--From The Daily Orange: The Syracuse University football team - Madonna, Mariah Carey and Kelly Clarkson are all planning massive summer tours. I'm sure in between summer practice our fearless Orange will be sneaking off South Campus to catch a quick version of "We Belong Together."

--From MSNBC.com: As Eric Nicoli, EMI's chairman, this week made his approach for Warner Music, he could take comfort that the target owns an appropriate soundtrack for the on-off talks between the UK and US music majors – "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey.

--From TeenPeople.com: Sexy stars, sun-kissed stars like Kristin Cavallari, Keira Knightley, Eva Longoria, Mariah Carey and Amanda Bynes know that a hint of glint exudes health and glamour. Click here for more information on how to get a streak-free self-tan.

--From MTV News: Remaining ["American Idol"] contestants Yamin, McPhee, Chris Daughtry and Taylor Hicks were flown by private jet to Elvis Presley's Graceland for private vocal sessions with Mariah Carey's ex-husband, music industry heavyweight Tommy Mottola.

--From DNA: Diva Mariah Carey, too is planning on cashing in on her name with an underwear line called 'Mariah Kiss Kiss'. What next?

--From iVillage: No matter how absurd the outfits Ms. Mimi dons for award shows and after-parties, there's always something endearing about her. Wardrobe disasters aside, there's no denying the 36-year-old is an icon. Maybe part of the reason we love her is that when it comes to weight issues, she's just like us. Whether she's put on a few pounds or taken them off, even she says she'll never be stick-thin, and we certainly applaud her for that. Trace the diva's figure through the years.

Mariah's Pent-Up Anger // 3:03 PM EST Updated by Lynn

They say the eyes don't lie - and for some people, the face doesn't either. Feng shui expert and Chinese astrology specialist Pun Yin is one of those people, and earlier this year, to commemorate Chinese New Year, MTV Chi brought her in for some character assessment.

The Chinese zodiac moves in 12-year cycles, and 2006 is the year of the dog - as were 1958, 1970 and 1982. A birth year and a look at a person's face is all Pun Yin needs, so we had her take a close look at the faces of several famous "dog" year babies.

Face reading is one of several elements used in Chinese astrology. "For face-reading, every part of the face represents a particular [era of a person's life]," Pun Yin says. "So [the first] 14 years is devoted to the ears, and then from 15 to 30 is the forehead period, 31 to 34 is the eyebrows, 35 to 40 is the eyes and 41 to 50 is the nose." (The viewpoints, divination and analyses expressed in this article are not those of MTV.)

    Mariah Carey - 1970
"You know, in [entertainment], it's so hard for people to stay true to the message - what is making the world a better place? - than just making money. Mariah Carey has strong eyes, however, her chi being so yin - so emotional, temperamental - it's diminishing her real power and control. So her success is conditional to other people feeling her. She will have continuous success all the way until she's 40, and right now she [is reaping] the result of what had been built for her when she was at the period of her forehead [from 15 to 30]. She had a lot of noble people helping her and setting her on the way to what she has become and what she is becoming as an individual. The forehead period was the strongest period of momentum and building the structure. So she has actually a lot of pent-up anger inside - and what the world sees as being such a soft, sweet, gentle person actually has a lot of anger inside. She actually has strong cheekbones: That is the commanding power. So for her it would be smart, while she is at the strong cycle, to try to [expand] into another field, such as being a producer and bringing in artists."

MYX, the biggest Filipino music video channel, is mounting up its first ever awards show to honor the past year's biggest and most deserving musical acts in the Philippine music scene. Mariah is nominated for her "We Belong Together" video in the International Music Video category alongside "My Humps" by The Black Eyed Peas, "Don't Cha" by The Pussycat Dolls, "Incomplete" by The Backstreet Boys, and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Greenday.

--Stacy Ferguson, aka Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas is reminded of Mariah in "Won't Let You Fall," one of two songs she contributed to the soundtrack of the movie, "Poseidon". She says, "...like a Mariah-Carey-in-the-'90s type of song. It's [fitting for] the character in the movie. She's got this big, huge, red drag-queen dress on, and it's very over-the-top and beautiful. It's powerful, just as powerful as people flipping over in a boat and dying, and that's what the song called for, so that's what it is."

--The latest issue of Men's Health includes a small Mariah mention in their "From the Editor" section which talks about the importance of getting regular check-ups. Editor-in-Chief David Zinczenko writes: "The average guy goes to the doctor less often than he visits Jiffy Lube. So, do my five trips mean I'm a hypochondriac? Hmmm...I'll entertain that accusation. My latest obsession has been my blood-pressure readings, which seem to be about as stable as Mariah Carey."
