Mariah has hired the VIP bar of the hotel for the evening. Later tonight, a reception party for "We Belong Together" will be held at "Funky Buda", nightclub in Central London.

Here are bits of information that Mariah has revealed to the fans who have waited for her at the hotel:

  • Mariah will visit Spain during July. The visit was scheduled for July 12th and has been pushed back, possibly to July 19th.

  • Mariah loved the 12" Picture-Disc of "We Belong Together" that's coming out in the UK on July 4th.

  • When asked about her "Live 8" song choices, Mariah's replied she will make the final decision on tomorrow's rehearsal. So far 2005 has been a fantastic year for Mariah Carey. Her latest album has sold incredibly well globally and is continually breaking chart records over in the US. Lyrically, this is also a incredibly well-written track, destined to leave the audience in awe when she performs it at the Hyde Park Live 8 gig on Saturday.

"We Belong Together" Reclaims No. 1 On Hot 100! // 1:27 AM EST Updated by Liron

Congratulations Mariah! In its 13th chart week, "We Belong Together" officially reclaims the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. This is the song's 5th week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and Mariah's overall 66th week at #1. The song remains at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart for a 6th week in a row!

"We Belong Together" also becomes Mariah's only single to have a chart run that includes non-consecutive weeks at #1!

"We Belong Together" breaks its own BDS airplay record with an unprecedented number of 212,191,100 audience impressions (10.1 million gain from last week).

Below are the approximated cumulative points for the top 5 artists: (in million impressions combining sales and airplay)

    1. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together: 283
    2. Bo Bice - Inside Your Heaven: 238
    3. Carrie Underwood - Inside Your Heaven: 194
    4. Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl: 185
    5. Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart: 153

    --From Billboard Daily Music News:
Carey Rebound Keeps Bice From Hot 100 No. 1

He may have the top-selling single in the United States, but "American Idol" runner-up Bo Bice came up short in the overall race for No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Bice has to settle for a No. 2 Hot 100 entry for his version of "Inside Your Heaven," a song that "Idol" winner Carrie Underwood took to No. 1 last week.

Holding Bice's debut solo release from the top of Billboard's main singles tally is Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," which returns to No. 1 after a one-week break. The track, which stems from Carey's Island Def Jam album "The Emancipation of Mimi," has now led the list for five non-consecutive weeks. On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list, "Together" is in the lead for a sixth week.

Bice is also No. 1 on the Pop 100, where Carey's "Together" is No. 2 and Underwood's "Heaven" falls 1-3. On the Hot 100, Underwood's song drops to No. 3.

Feedback On Mariah's BET Awards Performance // 4:22 PM EST Updated by Liron

--From AOL Black Voices: Best Staging: Mariah Carey
We know that she's been having vocal issues so we will give her a pass. Whether Mariah was completely there or not, her set was just gorgeous. How many awards shows have you seen where the stage actually looked like somewhere in the Caribbean? MC definitely gets props for that.

--From Blogcritics: When Mariah Carey performed "We Belong Together," I was pulling for her to make it through. Her voice sounded strained and that song is one that looks incredibly difficult to sing live. Somehow, she worked her way through it, like the pro she is. Her performance was sort of a breath of fresh air as it had no theatrics, fireworks, or crazy lighting tricks.

--From Fox 23: A hoarse Mariah Carey struggled through “We Belong Together” amidst a tropical backdrop.

--This morning on Power 105.1 Star and Buckwild have praised Mariah's performance on last night's awards show and said it was a classy performance.

--Earlier today, Jillian Barberie, Weatherwoman/Co-Host of Good Day L.A. mentioned Mariah and said how amazing she was last night at the BET Awards and how people like Fantasia went crazy when she appeared on stage.

  • "The Emancipation of Mimi" has been certified x3 platinum and becomes the 10th Mariah album to be certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA!

  • "We Belong Together" drops one spot to #3 on the Hot Digital Songs chart, selling 36,508 copies this week (17% decrease from last week) for a total of 320,441.

  • Below are this week's top sellers' figures:

Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl: 42,655
    (digital only)

Mariah Carey - We Belong Together: 36,508
    (digital only)

Despite the drop in digital downloads, Mariah's airplay figures are much higher than the competition and "We Belong Together" is likely to reclaim the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart this week.

Official chart positions will be revealed tonight.

  • According to Mediabase, "We Belong Together" has 247.791 million audience impressions and 25,093 spins!

    VH1 - 30

  • From Hits Daily Double: Although it’s a significant drop from the spectacular 740k debut total scored two weeks ago, Capitol’s Coldplay manages to hold onto this week’s #1 spot, with nearly 179k units sold. And there seems to be no stopping Island/IDJ’s Mariah Carey, who’s up from last week’s #4 to #2, with 127k [Billboard: 132k] (and the album’s still only on its second single...).

  • From Billboard Daily Music News: Contrary to recent weeks, the chart's next few slots are not populated by new titles gunning for the throne, but by top 10 veterans that all experienced plummeting sales. Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/Def Jam) rebounds 4-2 on sales of 132,000 copies, a 19% drop from the previous week.

Al Roker will soon be spending a night with Mariah Carey - well, sort of.

Roker has been named host of NBC's telecast of the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks, joining Carey and "The Apprentice's Donald Trump.

"Adding this event to co-hosting the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Rose Parade and 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center' officially gives me the title of 'Mr. Holiday,'" the "Today" show personality said in a statement.

NBC's coverage of the massive fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m.

During the telecast, Carey is scheduled to perform "America the Beautiful," "Shake It Off" and "We Belong Together" from her latest CD.

Trump, for his part, won't be singing. Instead, he'll lead the countdown and give the command to start firing the estimated 40,000 rockets in the display.

"This experience, without a doubt, will be my biggest firing ever," Trump said in the announcement.

Note: Mariah will be performing "It's Like That" and not "Shake It Off" as New York Daily News reports.

Jermaine Dupri Resurrects 'Mimi' // 12:14 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey reveals, "I knew that Jermaine Dupri was just good for this project." This proved to be a very smart move, as Jermaine Dupri has not only resurrected Mariah Carey's Mimi to be the biggest audience selling record to date, this record is the biggest selling record in musical history. No other producer has achieved this as to date, but Jermaine Dupri.

While the music industry counted Mariah Carey out, post the GLITTER album, Jermaine Dupri used his musical genius to create a sound that would not only capture new fans for Mariah Carey but also restored faith for Mariah Carey's fans who haven't heard her in awhile. Others stood with baited breath, and on the sidelines not even giving the "Resurrection of Mimi" a chance; the one person that stood by her, and knew that she could do it was Jermaine Dupri. He knew that Mariah Carey could do it, because Jermaine Dupri creates music that totally resonates in the souls of the listeners throughout the world, while bringing out the artist in the best light every single time. His music is not a cookie cutter style, he changes the music in accord to the artists, capturing the artist's unique sound. That's why he was able to create a sound for Mariah Carey that resurrected Mimi. Jermaine Dupri reveals, "I knew that Mariah could do it. She is an excellent singer, I knew she had what it takes to make her album a success, and it is definitely a wonderful album."

Australian Interview From The Set Of "Shake It Off" // 6:15 PM EST Updated by Liron

Richard Wilkins of Australia's "The Today Show" has interviewed Mariah on the set of the "Shake It Off" video in California. Below is the transcript of the preview to the interview:

Richard Wilkins: "Good morning to you! Well, I've had a busy couple of days over here. I've caught up with Mariah Carey, or Mariah Canary as we like to call her on the set of her new video "Shake It Off". It was shot on the Universal Studios lot. The video probably costing north of U.S 1 million dollars.

It was an absolutely huge set up. Mariah was there with a large posse, I tell you: her assistants have assistants. I asked her about her return to fame and glory after a pretty difficult time and how she deals with the turmoil in her life being played out in the media."

Mariah: "Well I think that, I never felt like a famous person until I went through the downside of fame and what that does, and how invasive that is and how hurtful things are when people make up lies about you and people hide in bushes and take bizarre pictures of you and paste your head on other people's bodies and all that kind of weird stuff.

When I was growing up, I was like: "Wow, I wanna be famous, I wanna do this, but I never wanted that level and then that happened to me and I was kind of like shocked and I just had to work through it and deal with it and fortunately I had great friends around me and just people who were there being like "you know what, you'll get through this because we know that people are just... you know, this is your time to get shots taken at you, so you gotta go through that."

Mariah Tapes 4th Of July Special // 5:52 AM EST Updated by Liron

Fans and friends gathered at Chelsea Piers (located at 23rd Street & the Hudson River) in New York last night for a one of a kind Mariah experience.

After gathering at the location, all the guests boarded a luxurious yacht by 8:30 PM. Around 9:00 PM, Mariah has arrived with her crew and with her friend Da Brat. The yacht stopped at various places in New York City in which Mariah performed.

Mariah performed "America The Beautiful" in a long blue sequenced gown in front of the Statue of Liberty. She then did "We Belong Together" in a short red mini dress in front of what used to be the World Trade Center. Then, in front of a backdrop of the bridges, she performed "It's Like That" with a special intro, wearing a white skirt and top with diamond buttons. It was sailor suit inspired. "America The Beautiful" and "It's Like That" were each recorded twice whereas "We Belong Together" was shot 4 times: once with dancers, twice without them and once for the helicopter shots.

All the songs were pre-recorded a couple of nights ago so that Mariah could sing to those versions on the yacht. The director of the event insisted Mariah performed the songs to backing tracks instead of singing them live.

The performances will be aired as a part of a 1 hour NBC special on 4th of July at 9:00 PM EST.

Extraordinary Concert with Mariah Carey in Tivoli // 2:47 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Tivoli has managed getting the American singer and superstar Mariah Carey to play a unique concert at "Plænen" in Tivoli on Monday, July 11th, 2005. This marks the first time that Mariah Carey has ever set foot on Danish soil. There aren't many chances to see the superstar live in Europe this summer, aside from the Tivoli concert, she will only be performing at Live 8 in London and in Germany. Mariah Carey currently tops the American singles chart with "We Belong Together".

The 35-year-old star debuted in 1990 with the album 'Mariah Carey' and has since sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, not least because of the albums 'Emotions', 'Music Box' and 'Daydream'. The huge success has secured her two Grammys, eight American Music Awards and 16 #1 singles on the American singles chart, a feat only topped by Elvis and The Beatles. This makes her the best-selling and most successful female artist of all time.

In April, Mariah Carey released her 10th studio album, 'The Emancipation Of Mimi', which is a colourful mix of Pop, Hip-Hop and R&B. The album was produced and written by Carey herself along with some of the hottest producers around, including The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri and J. Austin. The album has spawned the hit single "We Belong Together", which is currently one of the most played songs in America.

The concert will take place on July 11th at 10pm and admission will be free for visitors to the amusement park.

  • Tivoli is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and is Copenhagen’s most visited and famous tourist attraction. It is also renowned for its huge rock/pop concerts, and Mariah playing there is the scoop of the century!

Mariah’s performance will be free for all those who attend the amusement park that day. Just to clarify, that means that you just have to pay the normal entrance fee of 68 DKK for adults or 34 DKK for children.

For more information about the concert, visit MariahCarey.dk

--From San Francisco Bay View: Davey D. came across a tape that had an old interview he did with Shock G. He flipped to the b-side, and to his surprise he discovered the missing 2Pac interview from 1991. This rare unreleased interview with 2Pac was conducted shortly after he finished filming the movie Juice. 2Pac spoke about a lot of things, one of which was about the future challenges facing Hip Hop including regional beefs, and here he briefly mentioned Mariah. He said, "Instead of letting them do interviews where nobody ever reads them, let a good newspaper interview them. Instead of putting them on the radio when nobody is ever going to hear them or where nobody is going to hear them, have them where people can hear them and get at them where they had a better chance, just like if they were Mariah Carey."

You can download audio files of this once-lost-now-found 1991 interview with 2Pac Shakur by clicking here.

  • From Chart Beat:

IT'S CARRIE'S NATION: Underwood follows Mariah Carey at the summit, and Carey replaced Gwen Stefani. This is the first time three successive solo female artists have occupied the top spot without any featured acts since 2000. The three consecutive No. 1 songs by solo female artists in 2000 were "Doesn't Really Matter" by Janet Jackson, "Music" by Madonna and "(Come On Over Baby) All I Want Is You" by Christina Aguilera.

IT'S CAREY'S NATION, TOO: The No. 1 debut of "Inside Your Heaven" by Carrie Underwood sends Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (Island) into second place on the Hot 100 after a four-week stay in pole position.

That makes "We Belong Together" Carey's longest-running No. 1 since "One Sweet Day," recorded with Boyz II Men, reigned for 16 weeks in 1995-96. But don't count Carey out yet. Based on airplay strength, "We Belong Together" could certainly return to No. 1.

  • From Billboard Daily Music News: To make way for Underwood's debut on the Hot 100, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" drops to No. 2, but retains its bullet due to continued growth. The cut also improves its stand on the Pop 100, advancing 3-2, and holds onto its No. 1 post on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

  • From Hip-Hop/R&B/Soul: Fat Joe and his latest All Or Nothing set reigns in the No. 1 spot on the Top Rap Albums chart but can't quite repeat the takeover over on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums where he actually bumps Mariah Carey's The Emancipation Of Mimi out of the No. 2 space to the No. 1 spot where she reigns yet again.

--This month's issue of Spin magazine examines the 100 best records of the past two decades and lists Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" as its 4th best!

    4. "All I Want for Christmas Is You," Mariah Carey (feel-good hit of the Advent, 1994) -- Definitely the best Christmas song since "Christmas Wrapping" (the Waitresses), possibly the best Christmas song since "Jesus Christ" (Big Star), and arguably the best Christmas song since "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (various artists).

--From PC Magazine: Many of the ring tones seem to come directly from the Top 40 music charts. For instance, as of this week, the top five downloaded ring tones are Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," Pretty Ricky's "Grind with Me," Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," 50 Cent's "Just a Lil Bit" and Webbie's "Give Me That." Four of those tunes are in the top 10 on this week's Billboard singles chart.

--From NY Daily News: The Foos join Coldplay, System of a Down, White Stripes, Audioslave, the Dave Matthews Band, Rob Thomas, Nine Inch Nails and Bruce Springsteen as rock acts that have enjoyed No. 1, 2 or 3 debuts since late April. The only non-rock act to slip in at the top slot during that period was Mariah Carey. Her "Emancipation of Mimi" moved back to No. 1 during a guitar lull in the first week of June.

--From Argus Leader: Regardless, 2005 hasn’t been too different. Guys are once again dominating the headlines whether it’s rock (The Mars Volta, Nine Inch Nails), rap (The Game, 50 Cent) or country (Toby Keith, Cowboy Troy). Certainly, there are a few female artists who trump their gender opposites – Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, etc. – but the rest are mostly affirmative action handouts to appease the femi-nazis in our PC nation.

--From Newsday: When it comes to top-notch froth, Blender is the mag to beat. The features on divas such as Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey were not just deee-liciously dishy, they were brilliantly crafted. Plus, Blender's reviews are well-informed, fun to read and mercifully free of the rock-crit blather designed to impress other critics.

Is J.Lo ready to admit she lost to Mariah Carey? // 9:53 PM EST Updated by Will

Jennifer Lopez was reportedly overheard having a conversation with friends at a club in LA. The singer reportedly said that she is very unhappy with sales of her latest album and cites the single "It's Like That" by Mariah Carey being released one day after "Get Right" as part of the reason. "She was bitching about how Mariah could have waited." The source added, "It was like she believed the album could have done better if Mariah didn't overshadow her first single. After her friends started laughing, she began to laugh about it also." Poor J.Lo. Here's a reality check, sweetie. Your album took a beating because of that god-awful "Hold You Down." Maybe there is hope in the next single, "Step Into My World."

Burke's Best Bet: "Shake It Off" // 5:03 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey “Shake It Off” (Island/IDJMG)

We’re not going to say we told you so, but we did! We knew when we heard the MC advance of The Emancipation Of Mimi that it was loaded with potentially four or five hits. “Shake It Off” was one we tagged from the first listen, and is another hot Jermaine Dupri production. It’s not enough to tell you how good the record is, sales nowadays are the measure of success and MC remains firmly entrenched on the top of the charts scanning another 160,000, which is a testament to how many people have missed hearing this diva’s music, no matter what the format. MC has delivered again with what should be hit number three for one of the year’s best albums. BET ON IT!

"We Belong Together" Shatters Airplay Record (202 Million Listeners on BDS) // 5:00 PM EST Updated by Liron

MARIAH SHATTERS BDS 1-WEEK HOT 100 AUDIENCE RECORD WITH 202.1 MILLION LISTENERS FOR "WE BELONG TOGETHER"!

The sky's the limit for performer and songwriter Mariah Carey - who has become the first artist to break the 200 million one-week BDS Hot 100 audience barrier with We Belong Together (with 202.1 million listens), breaking her own BDS Hot 100 audience record (of 192.3 million, two weeks ago), it was announced today by Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group.

We Belong Together, shattered yet another record as the single gathered the largest one-day audience total ever in BDS history yesterday - 32.8 million. At the same time, Mariah's still-new Island Def Jam album, THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, certified RIAA double-platinum, stays in the top 5 for a 10th consecutive week (#5 up to #4 bullet), after peaking at #1 twice, in April and again in June.

Mariah, who lit up the MTV Movie Awards 2 weeks ago, will perform in London's Hyde Park on July 2nd as part of the lineup of Live 8: The Long Walk To Justice. The once-in-a-lifetime all-star event, organized by Sir Bob Geldof on the 20th anniversary of the Live Aid concerts, will present concerts in London, Cornwall, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Johannesburg, and Philadelphia on the eve of the international G8 Summit in Edinburgh, Scotland. Further information is available at www.live8live.com.

Two nights later, back in the USA, Mariah will be the exclusive headliner for NBC television's Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks® Spectacular, the country's largest Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET. For the first time ever, the annual one-hour special will feature just one musical performer, as Mariah celebrates the nation's 229th birthday. Her half-hour set will include We Belong Together, America The Beautiful, Shake It Off, and some surprises!

We Belong Together - already named the biggest single in the HISTORY of both Mariah and the Island Def Jam Music Group - secured her place as the #1 most successful female artist of all time when it became her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Mariah as the only active artist with the potential to surpass the Beatles (with 20 #1's) and Elvis Presley (18 #1's) in the modern era. (With 66 total weeks of #1 hits since 1990, Mariah also ranks 2nd only to Elvis, with 80 weeks.) We Belong Together is also Mariah's 5th #1 at the Mainstream Top 40 format, the most by any artist on that chart; and moves from #3 up to #2 on the Digital Songs chart, with 43,970 scans.

Last week, We Belong Together, written by Mariah and co-produced by her with Jermaine Dupri, became the first song to top 1 million BDS spins in a week at Yahoo's LAUNCHcast online radio. In addition, for a 4th week in a row, it stays #1 at Yahoo! on both its Music Video Plays chart and LAUNCHCast Plays chart, also an all-time record at Yahoo! Music. At AOL Music, the track has been in the #1 position for 9 consecutive weeks on the AOL Song Chart and is also #1 on the overall AOL Radio chart. The next single from MIMI is Shake It Off, written by Mariah and co-produced by her with Jermaine Dupri. This week, Mariah is filming the video for the single, directed by Jake Nava.

Mariah "Keeps Going and Going!" // 4:29 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Hits Daily Double's early forecasts for next week's album sales indicate Mariah may take the #2 spot.

"We don’t know exactly how many units yesterday’s new releases will rack up, but we can predict this much: Next week’s chart will be less exciting than this week’s chart, last week’s chart or any recent week’s chart. That’s cuz there are no more big rock bands waiting on the runway as we hit the first week of summer—and as you know (assuming you’ve been paying attention), the market was driven throughout the spring by big-selling releases from the half-century-old-but-not-dead-yet family of genres.

Barring an unforeseen charge by Mariah Carey (whose Island/IDJ album is the CD equivalent of the Eveready bunny), Coldplay, the year’s biggest-selling band, will easily hold on to the #1 position for the third week in a row. The expected 30% drop from this week’s total of 336k will still put X&Y (Capitol) well over 200k, while this week’s #2 and #3, the debuting Foo Fighters (Roswell/RCA) and Backstreet Boys (Jive/ZLG) will likely do the standard 50% second-week swan dives, keeping both well out of contention."

News Tidbits // 4:27 PM EST Updated by Lynn

--From EurWeb: Stevie Wonder, John Legend, rapper T.I., Ciara and Omarion will join superstars Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Missy Elliott and The Game as scheduled performers for BET Awards '05, to be hosted by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and broadcast live at 8 p.m. from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on June 28th.

--From New York Daily News: R&B in '05 can't crow over something as stellar as Usher's blockbuster. But one of its big names, Mariah Carey, has enjoyed a major comeback. Her "Emancipation of Mimi" ranks at No. 4, with enough momentum to hold a high place through year's end. The genre has also launched a major new star: John Legend, whose debut, "Get Lifted," stands at No. 9.

--Mariah won the first round of the "Battle of the Bands" against Destiny's Child with 51% of the votes! Mariah's next step is the Semi-finals where she'll battle the winner of the U2 vs. Green Day bout.

--Mariah's "We Belong Together" tops Yahoo! Buzz Singles Chart. "Every person has a different weakness, but we all know the feeling of a song that just won't let your brain rest. In honor of those eminently hummable tunes, we decided to look at the top songs in Buzz. Eminem's latest tune may have bored its way into the brains of many searchers, but it wasn't enough to topple super diva Mariah Carey from our top singles searches," Yahoo! Buzz reports.

--Stephanie, Mary, and Jenn are making a "Fanart Fanbook" to send to Mariah and would like to invite fans who may be interested in sending in their original "fanarts" e.g. banners, wallpapers, icons, blends, etc. for the fanbook. For more information, email one of them: Stephanie, Mary or Jenn. Deadline is August 15, 2005. View their flyer here.

Mariah Carey Plans A Double Shot Of 'Technical' Videos // 8:14 AM EST Updated by Liron

'It's a new approach that I would have to let [the director] explain,' Carey said.

Mariah Carey is planning to pull double duty at her next video shoot.

The singer wants to film two clips at the same time when she begins shooting on Thursday, much like she did for the dynamic duo "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together." This time, Carey is set to lens a clip for her next single, "Shake It Off," along with its follow-up, "Say Somethin'."

"We're making two videos," she said. "I actually just got the treatment. We came up with some cool concepts."

What those concepts actually are, Carey wouldn't reveal — because it's "really technical."

"It's a new approach that I would have to let [the director] explain," she said. "It's new territory."

Don't look for a storyline that ties the two videos together, as found in the last pair, when she left Eric Roberts at the altar in "We Belong Together" to run off with Wentworth Miller — who came into her life in "It's Like That." (see "Mariah Carey: Free At Last?"). While Carey is rooting for a cohesive narrative storyline, she thinks the clips might end up having a "slight" link that comes across only on a subliminal level. Brett Ratner was originally slated to return to direct the videos, but Carey has since selected another director, Jake Nava — at least for "Shake It Off."

"I think people can relate to [the song] no matter what you have to shake out — be it a bad day, a guy, a girl, whatever it is," Carey said. "It's one of those fun songs, where we're not taking ourselves too seriously, but it does say something, and it is real."

Carey worked on "Shake It Off" with Jermaine Dupri, but only after she rejected "Say Somethin' " (which she recorded with Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg) as the first single from The Emancipation of Mimi.

"L.A. Reid was totally into 'Say Somethin' ' as the first single," she said. "And I was like, 'It's great, but I don't know.' ... It's very Pharrell. He very much goes in that jazzy kind of direction, which is great. I could go there with him, but it's just not where I would naturally go.

"L.A. was like, 'You and Jermaine make magic,' " Carey continued. " 'Why don't you go work with Jermaine?' And I was like, 'Well, I love Jermaine. Is he free?' "

Dupri offered to start working with the singer the next day. "So I went down there and did two records with him in two days," Carey revealed.

The easygoing nature of their recording sessions was an exact match for what Carey wanted for her Emancipation proclamation, she said.

"To me, the spirit is very kind of free and fun and lighthearted," she explained. "It wasn't like I consciously said, 'I'm going to have a good time.' But I mean, it was just where I'm at in my life, naturally."

"State Property 2" Released on DVD July 12th // 12:31 AM EST Updated by Will

State Property 2, the Damon Dash-directed film featuring a sassy cameo from Mariah as "the Professionally Dressed Woman", will be released on dvd in the United States on July 12th. Click here to order the release from amazon.com.

The movie, which Variety called "slicker, funnier and more professional than its predecessor", is the action-packed sequel to State Property which debuted before audiences in 2002. State Property 2 continues to follow the life of the first film's lead character Beans (Beanie Sigel) as he struggles to maintain his crew's supremacy over the streets of Philadelphia.

The film had a limited release in theaters earlier this year. It is Mariah's first film role since WiseGirls three years ago. Of her cameo, director Damon Dash said it was mostly improvised. "We gave Mariah the gist of what to say and how to say it, then we went through it a couple of times and she got it. It's easy for her to act like a diva. She's not a real diva, but she acts like one really well. She gets the joke."

Head over to Mariah's Official Site to hear a brand new voice message from Mariah!

    Transcript
Yeah, oh yeah! (laughs) Okay, we got that from Trey, but anyway we had to use it on this message 'cause that's what we were doing at that moment, just revelling in the splendor of Trey.

Now listen, I am calling to say so many things, number one, being just thank you so much for this being We Belong Together's fourth week at #1 on the Hot 100! You guys like I don't... I can't even know what to say (laughs). This is how messed up we are able to catch phrases. Why do we like look at each other and know exactly what we're about to say... But, anywho (laughs), this is Rachel guest-starring in my message, FYI by the way.

But anyway, I also wanna talk about the fact that you guys... can you believe that the Hot 100 audience was 195.8 last week? Just seriously, I have to thank all of you so much and it's very, very exciting because also another fact that I've come to know about is the fact that it's only eleven days until We Belong Together is... it could be retired if it stays on TRL that long. So y'all voters (Rachel in the background: keep on voting!), we appreciate you doing your thing 'cause that would seriously be hot tamale 'cause the only other one - oh look what time it is - the only other one is that, that has ever been retired one of my videos is Heartbreaker so that would be hot tamale.

But anyway, we love you, appreciate you, enjoy you so much. Thank you for every, every, everything no matter what and seriously I can't thank you enough and we'll talk to you soon. Okey dokey smokey? Buh-bye.

--From EurWeb: Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and Fantasia are among the artists featured on a new Luther Vandross tribute album, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The Clive Davis-orchestrated project is said to be a more literal interpretation of Vandross' music than the 2004 jazz tribute disc "Forever, For Always, For Luther." Producer Jimmy Jam said: "It's basically artists doing Luther Vandross songs, but they're doing them their way. Some of the arrangements are very similar to Luther's arrangements." Ruben Studdard, Angie Stone and Celine Dion are also tapped for the project.

This positions Mariah as the only active artist in contention to surpass the Beatles (with 20 No.1's) and Elvis Presley (18 No.1's) in the modern era. We Belong Together also set the all-time one-week Hot 100 radio audience record with over 192 million listeners nationwide.

"NBC is thrilled to have Mariah Carey join us in celebrating America's birthday," said Doug Vaughan, Vice President of NBC Special Programs. "Her powerful voice will serve as the perfect complement to Macy's captivating visual artistry."

The country's largest Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza will feature nearly 40,000 brilliant shells exploding over New York and New Jersey set to a sweeping original medley performed by The New York Pops under the direction of the legendary Skitch Henderson. The Macy's Fireworks also will include a special salute to our nation's Armed Forces, featuring firework shells never before seen in the U.S., and a dramatic salute to the Olympic Spirit.

News Tidbits // 1:19 AM EST Updated by Lynn

--In a recent interview with AllHipHop, Jermaine Dupri says he didn't get a lot of recognition in his earlier days and is still getting a little bit of recognition now. He claims he's the person responsible for Mariah's comeback. He says, "I believe at the end of the day, I’m gonna be the last man standing when it comes to all this music, period. I think each one of these others guys are eliminating themselves slowly but surely. ‘Cause they finding other things that they love to do besides music. Where I’m in love with making records. I feel like eventually everyone will come in and know that I’m that dude. Like a year or two ago, people were talking bad about Mariah Carey like she fell off, and for her to be back at number one and the first two singles that are out are my records, I don’t know if I’m suppose to say it, but I feel like I’m the person responsible for putting Mariah back in the mix. But I don’t know if someone else will say that. And I’m not gonna promote it, cause I’m not like that, I just do what I do. But some people feel like I should be out there screaming that, so people will give me a lot more respect."

--"Greatest Hits" flirts with Catalog Top 50 as it leaps 94-58 on the catalog 200, up 28% to 3,716 units. The #50 title scanned 4,012 units. "Greatest Hits" has scanned 647,680 units to date and currently sits at #13 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Albums. #1s meanwhile, climbs 146-125, with 2,512 units. Total stands at 3.474 million.

How Long Will Mariah and Pole Position Belong Together? // 7:21 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Dear Fred,

How long do you expect "We Belong Together" to stay at No. 1? I read last week about the massive lead the track has over "Hollaback Girl," so I'm imagining it could sit up top for weeks to come.

    Thanks!
    Mark Blankenship
    Brooklyn, N.Y.

Fred Bronson of Billboard Chart Beat Chat answers:

    Dear Mark,

Based on its airplay strength, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" could have a long run at No. 1. Or, this could be its last week, depending on how many copies of Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven" are sold. The first three seasons of "American Idol" produced No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 based either entirely or almost entirely on sales, so it's in the realm of possibility that Carrie will rule the chart next week.

Underwood is already No. 1 on the Hot Country Singles Sales chart and No. 5 on the Singles Sales list, based on street date violations.

The Emancipation of Mariah // 7:19 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey takes the blame for her failed marriage to music mogul Tommy Mottola.

"I had a twisted perception of it because my parents got divorced when I was three," Carey says. "I don't think I had a template for what a functional couple is, so then my reasons for getting married were wrong."

She has been divorced from Mottola, the former boss of Carey's then-record label Sony Music, for 10 years.

But his shadow looms profoundly over Carey's onward journey, symbolic and otherwise, to true freedom.

"I was salvaging a relationship that was very oppressive and controlling by just giving in and getting married," she says. "I wasn't ready, I was too young, I wasn't prepared and I wasn't the right person.

"And I have a lot of guilt about that," Carey says. "It was a naive thing to do and I wish I hadn't done it. I take the blame, totally."

Carey's new album, The Emancipation of Mimi, is, as the title suggests, a celebration of freedoms.

But, importantly, it finds Carey owning up to past mistakes, and absorbing hard knocks to move forward.

"For this album, I think it was important to be myself, and not take myself too seriously, which is just the reality of who I am," she says.

"It was about letting go and not taking on other people's perceptions of me. It wasn't about a record company thing of, 'Let's talk about struggles and your life and the rumours'.

"It's me being me. And it's nice to see it actually worked."

Certainly, Emancipation is Carey tweaked and twisted by hip-hop, soul and gospel.

In her fourth week at No. 1 at Rhythmic Top 40, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (IDJMG) sets the format record for most one-week detections, with 5,567. The total bests the mark set recently by 50 Cent, who hit 5,520 spins with "Candy Shop" two months ago.

Carey's success comes one week after she set the all-time audience total on The Billboard Hot 100 with 192.3 million listener impressions. Carey also sets the bar at Rhythmic Top 40 with her current total of 47.4 million impressions.

At R&B/Hip-Hop, Carey remains at No. 1 for a third week and closes in on that format's top spin total by a female artist. With 5,420 detections, "Together" ranks second only to "Goodies" by Ciara Featuring Petey Pablo among female-led titles. "Goodies" had 5,695 plays in the Sept. 17, 2004, issue. Radio Active Carey // 9:52 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Two years ago Mariah Carey was radio poison in Australia.

Despite being a staple of commercial FM stations throughout the 1990s, changing formats (away from the adult contemporary sound towards a dance and urban sound) had seen Carey bumped off the radio radar.

Singles from her 2001 album Glitter and 2002's Charmbracelet were avoided, despite loyal Carey fans bombarding radio stations with requests.

And with her songs not on radio, she struggled on the chart.

In Melbourne, Mix FM was the only station supporting Carey, briefly.

"Through the Rain (from Charmbracelet) was a classic Mariah ballad and suited our format," Mix FM music director Jakob Pavlovic says.

"With other stations, it's more about energy, hype, tempo and being a hit. In hindsight, it's probably fair to say it wasn't the strongest material Mariah has done, and eventually because of weak research (low 'love' scores along with high negative scores), this song also came off the Mix playlist."

A guest spot on Busta Rhymes' 2003 hit I Know What You Want saw Carey back on stations such as Fox and Nova, though tentatively.

But this year everything has changed.

Carey's It's Like That became a surprise radio success; played across the board on Fox and Nova.

"We took our time with the song, we were a little cautious about it," Fox music director Scott Baker-Smith admits.

But the "American story", whereby Carey's We Belong Together became her 16th US No.1 single, has influenced Australian radio.

The ballad We Belong Together is now all over Fox and Nova, stations that don't play all that many ballads, as well as Mix.

"She has reinvented herself, and modernised her music," Pavlovic says.

"The style of We Belong Together is still a pop ballad, but it doesn't sound like an '80s ballad, it's very modern and stylish."

Fox's Baker-Smith says it's "right time and right place" for Mariah this year.

"It's worked a treat; they've been killer songs. I don't have the answer; it's the right song at the right time. She was a bit ahead of her time with rap collaborations. Now everyone's doing it.

"The new song is a massive ballad and it just sounds great on radio. The feedback's been great on it. She's a superstar again."

"The Emancipation of Mimi" Drops to #5, "We Belong Together" Still #1 on Billboard // 6:15 PM EST Updated by Liron

--Official Soundscan figures for Mariah are in:
"The Emancipation of Mimi" slips to #5 on the Billboard 200, drops 12% from last week, selling 151,440 copies this week. Total sales: 1,873,575.

"We Belong Together" rises one spot to #3 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart with 34,656 digital downloads this week (15% increase). Total downloads: 239,963. The song is expected to remain at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a 4th week in a row!

"We Belong Together" may lose its top position next week due to large sales expected by American Idol winner Carrie Underwood whose single has been released on Tuesday.

Be sure to keep Mariah on top and download We Belong Together if you haven't yet!

--"We Belong Together" currently sits at #2 on the iTunes top 100 songs (album version at #61, remix at #76) and #1 on the Pop 100 songs.

--On AOL Music, "We Belong Together" is #1 on AOL's top 11 videos and top 11 songs!

The song is also #1 on both video and radio charts on Launch Music.

--From Entertainment Weekly (Issue #825, June 17th 2005, page 83)
SUPER SIZE 'MIMI': It's the ultimate burning question: Who the hell is buying all those Mariah Carey CD's? We're still waiting for the market research to come back, but we do know there were 172,000 of 'em in the album's eighth week, pushing Mimi's total over 1.7 million.

--From Billboard: With the first four slots taken by new titles, Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/Def Jam) falls 1-5 a week after reclaiming The Billboard 200 throne. The album, which has spent two non-consecutive weeks on top, has the dubious honor of leading the landslide of remaining top 10 albums with its 12% sales tumble to 151,000.

--From MTV News: It was a remarkably strong week for the industry, thanks to three other huge debuts that together will manage to bump Mariah Carey's new one, The Emancipation of Mimi, to the chart's #5 slot — the first time since the record's release that it finishes out of the top three. With sales of more than 151,000, Mimi was no match for the Peas, the Stripes and the 'Kira.

Mariah To Come Back To The Philippines? // 5:00 PM EST Updated by Liron

The Emancipation of Mimi has already shipped 90,000 units in the Philippines, enough to be certified three times platinum. The album surrenders the top position as it succumbs to Il Divo's maiden release. 'Mimi' is officially one of Mariah's biggest sellers in the Philippines matching the massive success of Rainbow which also garnered a Triple Platinum certification for shipments of 120,000 units under old certification rules.

'Mimi' was released in the Philippines on April 5th and debuted below Nina's Live album before eventually reaching the summit as the number one album in the country, Mariah's first number one album since Rainbow. The album's massive success is fueled by "We Belong Together" which still dominates radio countdowns across the nation, recently topping lists in Wave 89.1 and 99.5Rt to name a few, months after its release. The video is still heavily rotated in MYX, MTV Philippines, Channel V, Link TV, Cube ITV, Morph TV, Destiny TV and PinoyCentral TV.

Universal isn't done promoting the album in the Philippines. They have a listening party for Mimi this coming Thursday, 9PM at the RNB Music Venue in Metrowalk in cooperation with LSFM. It is rumoured that multiplatinum recording star, Nina, who is a big Mariah fan, will take part in the festivities! Free Fudge Magazines are also given to fans who purchase "The Emancipation of Mimi" in select Odyssey stores.

PMCF members have gotten in touch with the concert producers of Mariah's Charmbracelet world tour stint in the Philippines and they say very cautiously that they are trying to get Mariah back in the Philippines on January 2006. Nothing has been confirmed, but the producers claim that Mariah has increased her talent fee from the last tour so it may be difficult to bring her back. Mariah scored her biggest single concert crowd in Manila for the Charmbracelet tour, attracting over 30,000 fans, just before that, Mariah drew 50,000 people in two shows live in China!

Please be sure to visit the Philippines Mariah Carey Fanclub which has just returned after a week of down-time. A new Multimedia Forum has been opened as well!

New Mariah DVD to be released // 10:07 AM EST Updated by Will

On August 9th, an unauthorized documentary film about Mariah will be released on DVD in the United States. The hour-long profile, part of the Music Box Biographical Collection, contains "exclusive interviews, rare photos and archive footage courtesy of numerous private collectors from around the world". To pre-order the DVD for $11.23 and to see its coverart, log on to amazon.com.

The DVD was released earlier this year in Europe. Although it was promised to "provide a fascinating insight into Mariah Carey's remarkable career", some fans were disappointed because the DVD features none of Mariah's music due to legal restrictions and includes some incorrect facts. However, the DVD does include an interview with Mariah from the "Daydream" album era and should serve as a welcome addition for the ultimate Mariah collector.

Mariah Wants To Sing With George // 4:19 AM EST Updated by Liron

MARIAH Carey is trying to persuade George Michael to duet with her at Live 8.

The pair have been keen to keep their plans secret, but George is on the verge of agreeing to perform with the American singer.

A source said: "Mariah is a massive fan of George's. He's currently recording a duets album, so she thought he might be up for this.

"She's so excited to be involved in the Hyde Park gig and was trying to think of something that would make her performance really special.

"She thinks a duet with George is the perfect thing."

George has already told pals he is keen to perform some Wham! classics as well as his solo hits at the concert.

The 41-year-old sang Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me with Sir Elton John at the Live Aid concert in 1985.

But the pair recently fell out when Sir Elton said George should get out more.

George's last live performance on a similar scale was at the NetAid concert at Wembley Stadium in 1999.

Mariah has said before that George was her hero when she was a schoolgirl.

"I looked at him and I wanted to do what he was doing," she once said.

News Tidbits // 2:21 PM EST Updated by Liron

--Below are scans of Mariah gracing the pages of this week's (ending June 20, 2005) "Star", "US Weekly" and "In Touch" magazines:

--As previously reported, Mariah is featured in the June/July issue of "Para Todos" magazine as one of the "15 Latinos of Summer". Below is the cover of the magazine with Mariah's small picture on it, and the larger one which is located inside the magazine which is out June 15th:

--The New York Times reports that the cover of the first issue (July) of the in-flight magazine of Delta Air Line's low-fare carrier, Song called "Song Lyric" will feature Mariah Carey.

--From New York Post: It's nice to see Donald Trump and Melania Knauss Trump are still acting like newlyweds. Walking into the M.A.C. cosmetics dinner for Andre Leon Talley's new book, "ALT365," at La Grenouille the other night, Trump said to his wife, "Nice dress, babe — I can see right up it." The dinner, which started at 8 p.m., was attended by Iman, Emmy Rossum, Diane von Furstenberg, Barry Diller, Carol Alt, Behnaz Sarafpour, Zac Posen, Steve Stoute and Anna Wintour — all of whom arrived on time. Which is why when Mariah Carey — who is perennially late to everything — strolled in at 11, she was "scolded by [Trump]," our spy said.

--Popular Filipino singers, Regine Velasquez and Jaya have performed "We Belong Together" live together. Click here to download the file, courtesy of Regine Velasquez Yahoo Group.

--Yahoo! Music features a photo slide show of different photos of Mariah during the span of her career. Click here to view the slide-show.

--According to Peter Rauhofer's Official Site, Peter will be mixing at "Spirit" in NYC for the Gaypride Xtravaganza on 06/25/05. The event promises a special surprise performance by "M" (more info soon).

Many are speculating the "M" stands for Mariah Carey, since Rauhofer has just mixed "Say Something", Mariah's new single, as well as "We Belong Together" & "It's Like That". Mariah's team has neither confirmed nor denied her participation.

--Amber from Banding Together Project 2005 writes, "We want to close out this project by the end of the summer, so we can present Mariah with her book from the project and get the money sent to Save the Music. So, we are offering a special promotion for lambs who want to participate. BUY one and get another one for free!!!"

Return of The Maz // 12:33 PM EST Updated by Liron

Diva-haters, be warned. You can stop buying their records, you can avoid going to see their terrible films, but some of our leather-lunged songstrels are tougher than the Terminator, and just as likely to come back for more.

Take Mariah Carey. Three years ago, her career seemed to be over. She'd just been dropped by EMI records, the album and film combo "Glitter" had been roundly laughed out of cinemas worldwide and Christina Aguilera seemed to have nicked her act and all her fans.

Now, things are very different. Her comeback album "The Emancipation Of Mimi" is sitting pretty at the top of the US charts, and so is her song "We Belong Together". Add to that the fact that she was recently named the biggest-selling female artist of all time (Madonna must be fuming), and you have to admit that she's, like, so back.

A Mariah snitch told the Mirror: "Mariah is ecstatic. She celebrated the news with her old pal Jay-Z at a birthday party yesterday." Re-birthday party, donchamean?

"We Belong Together" Smashes Airplay Record
--"We Belong Together" is the Greatest Gainer / Airplay on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for the 5th week in a row, 6 times in 7 weeks!

As previously reported, in the June 18 issue of Billboard, Hot 100 chart manager Silvio Pietroluongo reports that Carey's song "sets a one-week Hot 100 audience record with 192.3 million impressions. She beats the 189.6 million that Mario's 'Let Me Love You' reached in the Feb. 5 issue. Carey's 65.9 million lead over Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl' is the largest in the history of [the separate] Hot 100 Airplay [chart]."

--From FMQB: Mariah Carey's latest single, "We Belong Together," continues to set new heights in the singer's illustrious career. The song just set a new, all-time, one-week record according to the BDS tracking system, with an audience of over 192 million. "We Belong Together" currently sits on top of the R&B/Hip-Hop, Hot 100 Airplay and Urban/Rhythmic Top 40 charts as well. It is also Carey's 16th #1 single, making her the most successful female solo artist of all time on the singles charts, with only The Beatles and Elvis Presley ahead of her in the history books.

--From Billboard Daily Music News: For a third straight week, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" is the top single in the United States. Steadfast at No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100, the song again holds the title of the chart's greatest airplay gainer.

In a week that finds Carey's latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi"(Island Def Jam), returning to No. 1 on The Billboard 200, "Together" is also No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list for a third week. Additionally, it's gaining ground with a 5-4 move on the Hot Ringtones chart, where the Ying Yang Twins' "Wait (The Whisper Song)" is on top for a fourth straight week.

--From Reuters/Billboard: For the second time this year, an artist has both the No. 1 album and single in the United States.

Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" topped the Hot 100 singles chart for a third consecutive week, according to data issued Thursday, a day after her comeback album "The Emancipation of Mimi" returned to the top of the Billboard 200. Rapper 50 Cent accomplished the double earlier this year with his album "The Massacre" and single "Candy Shop."

    Congratulations Mariah!

News Tidbits // 8:12 PM EST Updated by Lynn

--MAC Veneers, the best in cosmetic dental veneers, today announced the "Top 10 Superstar Smiles" from the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, airing tonight at 8:30 pm EST. Selected by Dr. Michael Apa, DDS, partner in the Rosenthal Group, noted for its long list of celebrity patients, the 10 winning celebrities had the most aesthetic and image-enhancing smiles. Dr. Apa assessed each smile on several factors, including the shape, color and size of their teeth, as well as the overall appearance.

Mariah has been chosen to have the 6th Best Superstar Smile. Dr. Apa says, "Mariah's smile exemplifies how tooth shape affects overall face shape. Her long, square-shaped teeth flatter her face." The other bright smilers include Jennifer Alba (#1), Jennifer Connelly (#2), Lindsay Lohan (#7), Nicole Kidman (#10) to name a few.

--At Billboard's Chart Beat Chat, in answer to a question on Mariah's record run of weeks at No. 1, columnist Fred Bronson says, "...including the two weeks that Mariah Carey has been on top with "We Belong Together," she has spent 63 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100. That puts her in second place in the rock era, ahead of the Beatles' 59 weeks but behind Elvis Presley's 78 weeks."

--Angel was one of the lucky fans who met up with Mariah at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards taping last Saturday, June 4th. He recounts, "...then while they were gone we are just waiting and then the shade comes up in the window of the trailer and it is Chris pointing at me and Mariah was next to him waving at me holding my gift. Mariah and the whole crew come out thru the gate we were at to go to perform. I asked Mariah if I can get a picture and of course the 'crew' are saying 'no' she has to perform right now. And Mariah looks at me puts her index finger up and says i will be back.... sure enough about 10 minutes later she comes back! I asked her for a picture again and she said yes!!! After that her crew took her away. I was just able to thank her and ask if she liked the gift and she said she loved it and she was back in the trailer. After that I jumped up and said 'Thank You God' for letting it be my turn to have a picture with Mariah."

Vogue Head Talks About Meeting Mariah // 7:46 AM EST Updated by Lynn

In an interview with The New York Times's Campbell Robertson at the MAC Cosmetics party to celebrate the publication of his journal/picture book "A.L.T. 365" Tuesday, June 7th, Andre Leon Talley, Vogue magazine's editor-at-large talked about meeting Mariah for the first time.

"Mariah and I were friends long before there was controversy," Mr. Talley said, punctuating the conversation by throwing out compliments to guests like confetti: "Your hair is terrific!" or "That's a great Marc Jacobs!" Our Boldface correspondent's suit, bought at a Sears clearance sale, escaped notice. But he liked our boots.

"I met Mariah in Aspen two Christmases ago, in the snow in Aspen. And she was walking around Aspen in these incredible Dior outfits and ski boots. I went into a jewelry store and introduced myself. She didn't know who I was.

"Then Mariah met me at DIANE" - that would be VON FURSTENBERG - "and BARRY DILLER's house for their Oscar lunch. She was dressed like a naughty Catholic schoolgirl."

"She said, 'I just want you to look at my album cover and tell me what you think of what I'm wearing and tell me if you like it,' and that started this relationship about clothing."

Much has been made about Mr. Talley's emergency enlistment to salvage Mariah's ailing fashion sense.

Mariah was in attendance at the MAC Cosmetics Party.

Jermaine Dupri Shakes It With Mariah // 7:00 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Jermaine Dupri is back at the top of the charts with writing and producing credits on Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" and is anticipating another return with the release of the third single from The Emancipation of Mimi, "Shake It Off."

"'Shake It Off' was just like ... That comes from that style of I guess [Usher's] Confessions and just that bounce," he said. "It's got a lot of ingredients to it because I never thought that Mariah could make a bouncy type of record. When you hear that song — the whole bounce of the record and the way she's flipping it and the stuff she talking about ... I knew that record was gonna go just because you never heard Mariah talk about this stuff. ... She's like, 'I packed up my Louis Vuitton.' She took it really on the ghetto side. I knew that was gonna strike people. Either it was gonna hit them in a wrong way or they was gonna love it.

"I had that beat actually before she got to the studio. So she came in, she heard that beat and was like, 'Yeah, that's what I want,'" he continued. "That was one of the first records we had. I didn't really know what to do for her because I didn't hear nothing else that was on the album, but I just felt like she didn't have that bounce on her album."

"Shake It Off" is already on the radio, and "Gotta Getcha" is one of the records on Dupri's So So Def compilation Young, Fly and Flashy, Vol. 1, due July 19.

Mariah's "WE BELONG TOGETHER" Sets All-Time 1-Week HOT 100 Audience Record With 192+ MILLION Listeners! // 4:10 AM EST Updated by Lynn

WE BELONG TOGETHER - HER 16th #1 HIT - STAYS #1 ON HOT 100 FOR 3rd CONSECUTIVE WEEK, #1 URBAN AND RHYTHM, #1 AT AOL MUSIC AND YAHOO! MUSIC

THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, RIAA DOUBLE-PLATINUM, RETURNS TO #1

MTV Movie Awards performance (WITH BIG SURPRISE!) set for tonight; 5th annual BET Awards broadcast to follow on June 28th

Performer and songwriter Mariah Carey - who will bring a film noir edge to the MTV Movie Awards tonight - continues to reign at the top of the charts as her still-new Island Def Jam album, THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, which is now certified RIAA double-platinum, returns to the #1 Soundscan spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and We Belong Together sets a new all-time record with BDS as the song moves into its 3rd week at #1 on the Hot 100.

With Tuesday's best-ever 1-day Hot 100 audience of 31.2 million listeners for We Belong Together, the song closes at 192.3 million this week (up 23.5 million from last week) - setting a new all-time record surpassing the previous 1-week records held by Mario (189.5 million, for "Let Me Love You") and Usher before that (172.8 million, for "Yeah!"). We Belong Together - already named the biggest single in the HISTORY of both Mariah and the Island Def Jam Music Group - stays at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Song Chart for the 3rd week in a row (as #1 Greatest Gainer/Airplay), #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay Chart for the 4th week in a row (also as #1 Greatest Gainer/Airplay), and #1 on the Urban and Rhythmic Top 40 charts.

Mariah secured her place as the #1 most successful female artist of all time when We Belong Together became her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Mariah as the only active artist in contention to surpass the Beatles (with 20 #1's) and Elvis Presley (18 #1's) in the modern era. (With 64 total weeks of #1 hits since 1990, Mariah also ranks 2nd only to Elvis, with 80 weeks.)

"Mariah proves once again that the word-of-mouth power of her fan base is unsurpassed in the pop, R&B and hip-hop markets," said Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. "We Belong Together is an enduring standard that reaffirms her position as a great songwriter and singer, with the unique ability to merge across all musical genres and cultural boundaries. The consistent week-to-week sales of MIMI over the past two months indicate a classic that will stand the test of time. As other acts come and go, on and off the charts in the competitive months to come, we are confident that MIMI will not only be crowned one of the top albums of 2005, but will keep the momentum to become one of the most successful albums of Mariah's career."

We Belong Together, written by Mariah and co-produced by her with Jermaine Dupri, also stays #1 at Yahoo! Music on both its Music Video Plays chart and LAUNCHCast Plays chart. At AOL, the track stays at #1 on the Streaming Audio chart for an 8th consecutive week, and #1 overall at AOL Radio. The videos for We Belong Together and It's Like That stay in rotation on VH1, MTV and BET - both clips were shot contiguously by famed Hollywood director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon, After the Sunset).

Mariah will surprise tens of millions of fans around the world when she performs We Belong Together at the star-studded annual MTV Movie Awards, airing tonight at 8:30 p.m./ET. On June 28th, Mariah will perform at the 5th annual BET Awards gala, where she is nominated as Best Female R&B Artist.

After appearances (since April) on Good Morning America, The Late Show with David Letterman, Live with Regis & Kelly, The View, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Mariah's two month-long television schedule brought her to The Oprah Winfrey Show on May 24th, where she performed We Belong Together for the finale show of Oprah's "Wildest Dreams" season. Mariah was then one of Oprah's special invited guests for her gala Legends Ball weekend.

Mariah Carey is an award-winning superstar with cumulative total sales of her albums, singles and long-form videos in excess of 75-times platinum in the U.S. alone and 150 million worldwide, making her the top-selling female artist in history. With a record 16 #1 singles - more than any female artist of the past century - two Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, Billboard magazine's Artist of the Decade Award, and the World Music Award as World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium - Mariah Carey's ongoing career remains an unparalleled success story in the history of contemporary popular music.

Carey's 'Emancipation' Returns To No. 1 // 12:48 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey rebounds 3-1 with "The Emancipation of Mimi" to give the Island Def Jam set a second non-consecutive week atop The Billboard 200, where it debuted in April. The set reclaims the throne despite a 4% dip to 172,000 U.S. copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Carey and System Of A Down lead an upward chart trend for most existing top 10 acts, which, in a pause from the slew of new entries over the past few weeks, are climbing in spite of declining sales.

Carey Honoured To Be A Part of Live 8 // 3:08 PM EST Updated by Liron

Pop beauty MARIAH CAREY is thrilled to be headlining the LIVE 8 concert in London's Hyde Park (02 JULY 05), as her African roots make the cause especially pertinent to her.

The HONEY songbird, an ethnic hybrid of African-American, Venezuelan and Irish, is privileged to be part of the glittering line-up, and can't wait to help raise awareness about poverty-stricken Africa.

She enthuses, "I'm so thrilled to be taking part - it's an honour to even be asked. I have African - American heritage so it's a cause that's close to my heart.

"To create awareness is important to me and I know that (organiser) BOB GELDOF is making such an effort to make this an impactful event to inspire people.

Mariah Loses Voice // 4:31 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey and publicist Marvet Britto are still talking - even if Britto is no longer the singer's mouthpiece.

The Grammy winner was said to be furious at Britto after she told a reporter, "Mariah needed [fashion] guidance," and that she'd brought in style guru Andre Leon Talley "to help Mariah's broken relationships with fashion houses. No one wanted to lend clothes to her."

Britto denies that those quotes provoked Carey to "fire" her. "I put an amazing blueprint in place to take her album to No. 1," the promoter and producer tells us. "I never planned to stay past that."

    Carey's manager, Benny Medina, concurs.

"Marvet did a terrific job. They're still close friends."

My Bad Times Are Over // 9:20 PM EST Updated by Shayne

3am EXCLUSIVE: With a new hit album, Mariah Carey's back on top

I'VE barely had time to catch my breath from the climb up the driveway to Mariah Carey's palatial Los Angeles home when a voluptuous vision in white glides into view.

"I'm sooo sorry to have kept you waiting", she purrs. "My conference call just went on for ever..."

For the full 11 minutes that Mariah has "kept me waiting," a steady trickle of elaborate canapes have appeared from one of the rented mansion's rooms.

Mariah, looking stunn- ing in a gypsy skirt and vest that shows off her curves, has been here less than a day (there's been a flood at her New York apartment and the scale of the damage has yet to be assessed) but already the Bel Air abode is perfumed with the expensive scent of the Diptyque candles.

In the imposing entrance hall, every surface is covered by silver-framed photographs that depict happy moments in Mariah's life: holidays with friends, her family, even a scruffy ginger cat.

Mariah has had a rough time of late. There was a two-week stay in hospital for, what some have said, was a nervous breakdown. She says it was exhaustion. Then she was savaged for her film and album - both called Glitter. Then came the $30 million pay-off to leave her label EMI.

Critics world-wide had written her off. But Mariah is most definitely back as she has been lined up to headline alongside Madonna and U2 at London's Live 8 concert on July 2.

"I'm so thrilled to be taking part - it's an honour to even be asked. I have African-American heritage so it's a cause that's close to my heart.

"To create awareness is important to me and I know that Bob Geldof is making such an effort to make this an impactful event to inspire people. It's going to be a great day."

After a period in the pop wilderness, Mariah's new album Emancipation Of Mimi has added to her tally of over 150 million singles and albums sold and spawned her 16th US number one - confirming her status as the biggest-selling female artist ever.

But she insists her happiness has little to do with silencing the critics, who claimed the lukewarm reception to her previous albums - 2002's Charmbracelet and the soundtrack to the box-office flop Glitter - marked the end of her reign at the top. "Charmbracelet sold three million albums and for me that's not a flop.

"When I was working on Charmbracelet my father passed away - it was a difficult time.

"But I had to go through those moments that weren't the happiest times 'cos they got me to this.

"At this moment, I'm in a good place - it's a new chapter in my life."

As she fusses over my fluid intake ("Can I get you some lemonade?) Mariah describes a typical day in her new chapter. "If we're doing a TV show I have to get up earlier than I would choose!

"Then it's the whole 'hurry up and wait' situation - you sit in a crowded dressing room for hours, then do the show, and if there's something the next day I come home and get right in bed to rest my voice.

"I've got five humidifiers by my bed - I zone out and try not talk too much. It's very boring!

"My ideal day would be spent on a Caribbean island with friends. Some tropical drinks, massages, swimming and, of course, we'd have to have Jack with us."

Jack is the current love of Mariah's life. A lively Jack Russell who boasts his own fan site and a Japanese admirer who wears a dog costume in his honour. "She's very devoted," Mariah laughs, before deciding that Jack is ready for his big reveal.

"He hasn't had his make-up done though," she jokes. "I think this will be his first interview."

Seconds later Mariah re-enters the room with her beloved mutt leaping up and down, trying to snatch a saliva-covered toy from her manicured hand.

As Jack dashes out in search of a gecko ("he just loves those lizards"), the conversation turns to Mariah's growing affinity with urban music. "It's a gradual evolution. It was a side of me that was stifled by the people in control of my early career."

People like Tommy Mottola, her controlling former husband and manager, I offer?

M ARIAH laughs: "If I insisted on doing something and it didn't work, they'd be like 'you see what happens when you listen to your instincts'.

"There were a lot of mind games that went on."

What about the wholesome image that was cultivated for her back then?

"When I started I was in agreement that we didn't want to go too sexy and take the focus off me as a singer. But five years later I was like: 'Can we maybe do the hair straight? Show a little skin? This turtle-neck's about to consume my head!

"When I left that crew of people I had my rebellious stage - any time I could throw on my bikini and take a picture I was like 'woah!' - doing the opposite of everything they tried to force me to do."

Mariah says she's now found a happy medium where her image is concerned - but admits she's still working through her long-standing issues. I ask her what last made her cry and after a long pause, her eyes moisten.

"A family situation. It was recent and I don't know if it's sorted out.

"I still see therapists - I think it's good to figure out a way to handle situations rather than letting your emotions get the better of you."

Her troubled childhood - in which her parents divorced when she was three, and her inter-racial heritage caused problems for her at school - along with a turbulent relationship history, have stifled her own maternal urges.

"Do I want to have kids? That's funny, Snoop Dogg was asking me that yesterday. It's something I'd have to think about carefully.

"It's scary and I think a lot of apprehension also comes from trying to find the right person. I'd want to make sure that I didn't make a mistake again - I feel bad about getting married to Tommy. I figured if I got married, maybe Tommy would lighten up, but it was the wrong thing to do. I'd only get married again if I decided to have kids."

The one subject Mariah is coy about is her love life. "I'd love to talk about it but I can't," she says before conceding that fame is a hindrance to finding Mr Right.

"It's a bizarre existence. And I've never bought into it - if I'm being interviewed I have to sit here and talk about myself but if I'm meeting a guy in a social situation, it's much nicer when they have other stuff to talk about.

"Most of my friends aren't in the public eye. It's important to have 'real' people around you."

Highest on her potential-mate checklist is a sense of humour - "With my life you have to be able to laugh!" - followed by a good character and generosity.

"I love baubles. A breakfast bauble, a lunch bauble - a girl's best friend!" With that, Mariah's publicist says she's running late for another meeting and asks if she minds having her picture taken. "But I look like I weigh 80 million pounds in this outfit," she laughs.

Six snaps later and Mariah - alleged uber-diva incapable of functioning without an 80-strong entourage - lets me pick the photos.

She then thanks me for my time and apologises for her timekeeping.

And not a flustered flunkie in sight.

Mariah Carey's new single, We Belong Together, is out on July 4 (UK).

Parade Magazine Interview: "I Had To Get My Faith Back" // 7:31 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey had wild success - then divorce, a crisis in confidence and a breakdown. By Dotson Rader

"When I was growing up, I felt trapped in a world not suited to me," Mariah Carey said. "What I saw around me was scary, and it wasn't where I wanted to be. I refused to accept it as my future."

What Carey saw around her - and what was impatient to escape - were bigotry, substance abuse, poverty. She wanted to create a very different future for herself. Music was the means she used to do it. "I had a goal," she said. "I knew I wanted to sing. It was more than a dream to me. It was a prayer that I prayed with my whole heart. It was something I truly believed would happen, and it did."

Mariah Carey, 35, is arguably the most popular female singer, ever. Since releasing her first record at 20, she has sold more than 150 million albums and had more No. 1 singles than any individual performer except Elvis Presley. Still, Carey said, "I didn't feel worthy of happiness. One day, I looked around and thought, "why did I ever expect that if I had this success, I would have happiness too?"

Four years ago, the sparkling world that Carey had worked so hard to create began spinning out of control. Her movie Glitter and its CD flopped. Her record company, Virgin, responded by paying her to go away. Her three-year romance with Mexican singer Luis Miguel petered out. Her father died of cancer. On top of all this misfortune, she had a physical and emotional breakdown that landed her in the hospital. Many people in the music business wrote her off. She was in a bad way, and she knew it.

"I needed the focus and determination that I once had," she said. "I wanted the faith back." Carey has now come back with The Emancipation of Mimi ("Mimi" is Mariah's nickname), a terrific new CD with lovely R&B ballads and danceable hip-hop, all written by her. An enormous hit, it had the biggest first-week sakes of any of her 10 studio albums. "With this record, I wanted to get back to the little girl I was," she said. "I wanted that purity."

The youngest of three children born into a biracial family, Carey was raised in difficult circumstances in Hungtington, N.Y., not far from New York City. Her father, Alfred, was an aeronautical engineer. Her mother, Patricia, 67, a sometime singer, is of Irish Catholic descent. "My mom fell in love with my dad, and it was a controversial situation because he was black," Carey said. "She had grown up in a very rigid environment, went to convent school, and to marry my father was a rebellious act. There was a lot of prejudice."

When Mariah was 3, her parents had a bitter divorce. In its wake came family disputes, financial distress and insecurity. "I grew up with nothing," Mariah said. "My mother struggled to make ends meet. I never knew when the rug would be pulled out from under me. Still, it was probably better to be with my mother than my father. He thought my dream of singing was far-fetched. It was my mother who taught me how to sing." Then she smiled. "My father taught me how to whistle."

"I started singing when I started talking," she went on. "I always had such a desire to be around music. I absorbed it like a sponge. I'd hear my mother singing Rigoletto around the house, and then I'd hear Al Green's 'Call Me' on the radio. At night I'd listen to the radio under the covers and sing along. The radio was my friend, speaking just to me. Music was such a gift!"

Music was also an escape from the racial prejudice she felt. "I'd go into a store with my father," she said, "and people would stare, you know. Or I'd be with my mother, who is very Irish-looking, and I'm mixed, and people would ask, 'What is your father?' The fear, the sense of inadequacy, the feeling of not being fully accepted - I felt all that. You get to a certain age, and you don't tell your parents everything anymore," she continued. "It's embarrassing to say, 'Well, I felt really ugly in school today. My hair was in knots.' You grow up looking Sixteen Candles and wanting to be the popular girl. You look at the other kids and think, 'Where do I fit?' I felt like an outcast."

When Carey was 13, she got her first paid job. "I got money to sing background vocals," she said. "I thought, 'This is amazing. It's a whole other world!' I started by doing jingles, and then I did demos of writers' songs because I'm also a good mimic. If the sound du jour was a little thin and nasally [she trilled a scale], well, I can do that. Or I can do a more breathy sound, like Olivia Newton-John, which is my natural voice. I began thinking, 'I can write better songs than this,' and started writing songs."

In 1987, after graduating from high school, Carey moved into Manhattan. She was 17, intensely ambitious, with a beautiful voice of dazzling virtuosity over an astonishing five-octave range. The next year, Carey was signed to a recording contract with Columbia Records by Tommy Mottola of Sony Music. In two years, her music would help make Mottola the most powerful man in the record business, and it would earn Carey fame and tremendous wealth.

Her debut album, Mariah Carey, released in 1990, sold 9 million copies and produced four consecutive No. 1 singles. Carey said that her long Columbia/Sony partnership eventually made the company more than $1 billion. Mottola, 20 years older than Carey, was married and had two young children when they met. Carey was still a virgin. "I'm not a promiscuous girl," she said. "I believe that's something to be proud of."

In 1993, Carey married Mottola, who by then was president of Sony Music Entertainment, and they built a lavish mansion on a 50-acre estate in Tony Bedford, N.Y. Carey paid for half of everything. "In the beginning, it was easy to be enthralled by him," she said. "He totally believed in me as an artist. He represented a stability I'd never had. I loved and cared for him."

She paused for a moment, then said: "When fame happened, he couldn't handle it. I was treated almost like a prisoner. Everybody around me was deathly afraid of him. I became so scared. I was like an obsession and a possession." She separated from Mottola, and they were divorced in 1998. "When I got married," she said, "I really thought it was going to be forever. I wish someone had smacked me in the face."

During this marital turmoil, Carey attended a gala for The Fresh Air Fund, which provides free rural vacations for underpriveleged New York children. (As a teen, she'd spent time at one of its camps. Now there's a Camp Mariah in Fishkill, N.Y., named in her honor.) That night she met Derek Jeter. An eventual romance with the Yankee shortstop altered how she understood herself. "Derek parents are like mine," Carey said. "His father's black, his mom's Irish. So when I saw how great his family was, it gave me hope. I realized that I was blaming all the problems of my life on growing up biracial. Derek's family functioned great as a unit, and I'd never see that before. I looked at Derek, and it changed my perception." But the romance ended in less than a year. Why so soon? "It was the wrong time," she said quietly. "Our two worlds were just too much for that moment."

By 1999, she had begun an affair with Luis Miguel. That relationship lasted, on and off, until her career hit the skids. Mariah reacted with compulsive overwork and too little sleep. Then she shattered inside.

I asked what had sustained her through the breakdown. She recalled a memory from childhood: "It was when I was 4 years old. My parents' battles, craziness - whatever - was going on in my house. Everybody was crying. It got to the point where the police were called. That's how intense it was. Then someone called Nana Reese to come to the house, because we needed her."

Sarah "Nana" Cole Reese, her father's aunt, was a Pentecostal minister. "Nana was the real thing, a healer," Carey said. "She laid her hands on me, and I felt in that moment a connection between us. She said, "You're going to be OK. All your dreams are going to come true."

"The faith Nana Reese and my mother had in me carried me through," she said. "And because I know I'm not perfect, I've had to learn forgiveness. I try wholeheartedly to forgive anyone I feel has wronged me, because I hope people who feel I've wronged them will forgive me. I want to be a forgiving person."

Mariah's A Hard Worker And A Survivor // 4:36 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Elysa Gardner of USA Today took part in a chat with readers on Tuesday, May 31, and was asked about Mariah Carey's strong comeback with 'The Emancipation Of Mimi'.

Canton, MI: Hey Elysa! I'm so unbelievably happy that Mariah's new album has been so successful - it's really terrific and she's finally shut up her naysayers. Do you think, besides "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together", she could have other potential hit songs? Which ones? Do you know if she'll tour this summer? Thanks!
Elysa Gardner: I'm also really happy for Mariah. People have been tough on her, and she's been tough on herself. There are a couple of gospel-y songs towards the end that could do well. As for touring, I know she had been doing a lot before going into the studio, but we'll see.

Lincoln, NE: Very impressive that Mariah Carey has scored 16 #1 hits, but my question concerns the strength of her catalog. Madonna has "Like a Virgin," "Vogue," and "Material Girl,", Whitney has "I Will Always Love You," and even Celine has the Titanic song. Do you think Mariah has a song that can be considered a signature song and/or classic? I'm going with "Vision of Love," but that's stretching it.
Elysa Gardner: Remember that Mariah has insisted on writing or co-writing pretty much all her hits, and maybe that's been a factor. Not that she's not talented in that field.

Salem, OR: Are you surprised at how big of a comeback Mariah Carey is having?
Elysa Gardner: Surprised, and pleased -- she's a hard worker, and a survivor. Good for her.

"We Belong Together" is Summer's First #1 Hit! // 3:00 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey capped a triumphant comeback when her latest ballad, "We Belong Together," topped the Billboard charts last week. The song is built on a slow-motion hip-hop beat and a simple plea, and it gives Ms. Carey plenty to play with; her nimble syllabic runs are as graceful as her big, breathy exhalations. Better yet, it arrived at just the right time: by topping the charts right before Memorial Day weekend, "We Belong Together" became the first No. 1 hit of the summer.

Island Girl // 2:16 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey continues to rule Billboard's Hot 100 with "We Belong Together" (Island) for a second week. As reported last week, it's Carey's 16th No. 1, bringing her closer to matching Elvis Presley's total of 17. Only the Beatles, with 20, have more chart-toppers than Presley. Counting weeks at No. 1, Carey has now accumulated 63 weeks in pole position. That keeps her ahead of the Beatles' 59, but still behind Presley's 78.

"We Belong Together" is the first single on the Island label to reach No. 1 in almost 18 years. There have been six Island singles to top the Hot 100 and "We Belong Together" is the first single on the label by a solo female to go all the way. The Island No. 1s are:

"Up Where We Belong," Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes (1982)
"Addicted to Love," Robert Palmer (1986)
    "Higher Love," Steve Winwood (1986)
"With or Without You," U2 (1987)
    "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," U2 (1987)
"We Belong Together," Mariah Carey (2005)

When Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" album debuted at No. 1 earlier this year, it became the first Island set by a solo female artist to top that chart.

Hits Daily Double comments on Mariah's album sales this week and predicts her position on next week's chart:

  • ROCK IS ALL THE RAGE AT RETAIL
For the fifth week in a row - or every week since Mariah Carey made her #1 bow on April 19 - a rock artist has topped the charts. Now comes the latest recipient of the Rock’s Not Dead trophy, Audioslave. Chris Cornell, Tom Morello and company’s Out of Exile (Interscope/Epic) left everyone in the dust this week, locking in the #1 position on the HITS Top 50 Albums chart with a rawkin’ total of 266k.

The battle was for the #2 slot, which was eventually won by Geffen rapper Common, whose Kanye West-produced album, Be, racked up 189k units, just 12k more than Mariah’s The Emancipation of Mimi (Island/IDJ) with 175k [Soundscan: 179k], which is turning out to be one of 2005’s most consistent sellers, along with 50 Cent, whose Shady/Aftermath/Interscope frigate sails into the #9 spot this week. But we digress.

As it turned out, #3 Mariah bested last week’s breakout champs, American/Columbia’s System of a Down, whose Mezmerize did the typical rock drop of 63% from last week’s thunderous 465k, putting them slightly behind the comeback diva at 1712k.

Next week’s biggest debut looks to be Epic’s Oasis, with a shot at 100k, meaning Mariah has a shot to reclaim her throne.

  • EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
    Mariah’s Looking Good for a Return to #1;

Go ahead. Call it a comeback.

After a month and a half on the chart, Mariah Carey’s The Emancipation of Mimi (Island) is poised to re-take the #1 position, further cementing her position as reigning diva, thanks to a smash album, tons of radio love, and, of course, a little help from IDJ chief Antonio “L.A.” Reid.

The scenario is this: Current chart-topper Audioslave, which came on strong with a near 266k debut this week for Out of Exile (Interscope/Epic), is expected to see the typical second-week drop of 50%; same for Common’s Be (Geffen), which came in at #2 on close to 189k sold. Meanwhile, Mariah has been selling in the 170k-180k range for weeks now with no signs of letting up, meaning that if things continue along this course, she’ll be #1 again next week.

As always, predictions such as this are based on early reports from national accounts and could change completely by tomorrow (or the next day), at which point we will likely pretend that this story never existed. Thank you.
