Rumor Mill: Mariah Only Eats Purple Food // 7:18 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Is it pink or purple? Yesterday's New York Daily News reported health-conscious Mariah's preference for "pink" food, e.g., salmon, ruby red grapefruit juice and blood oranges. Now, the Sun UK tells us it's "purple."

Diva Mariah Carey is so desperate to beat wrinkles she is eating only "purple" food.

Mariah, 36, munches mauve meals - with ingredients such as red grapes and beetroot - three days a week because of their anti-ageing benefits.

A source said: "It sounds off-the-wall but it’s a huge injection of healthy food in one go. Purple products are nature's best weapons in the battle against aging. There's a saying that 'a plum a day keeps a facelift away'."

American star Mariah is once again the world's biggest female star thanks to her hit comeback album, "The Emancipation Of Mimi."

She devised the diet with her nutritionist to use skin-boosting foods high in anti-oxidants and vitamins.

The source added: "Purple food can prevent breakdown of collagen and slow the wasting of muscles. So Mariah is bulk-eating them." She is not the first star to follow a weird monochrome diet.

Actor Billy Bob Thornton, 50 - ex hubby of Angelina Jolie - once ate only orange food such as carrot, pumpkin and clementines.

--Last year: Stepping out at the Teen Choice Awards in flared jeans (left). This year: Form-fitting in New York City.

Which jeans do you like better on Mariah? Boot-cut or Skinny? Vote here!

--Mariah was mentioned last night on a segment of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno entitled, "Amazon.com's Worst Sellers." Jay had a copy of "The Emancipation of Mimi," which he held while briefly talking about Mariah's incredible sales on Amazon.com. He then showed a false CD entitled, "The Constipation of Ruben Studdard" saying it was one of the worst-selling items on Amazon.com.

--Reminder: Vote for Mariah for "Choice Music: Female Artist" and "Choice Music: R&B Artist" at Teen Choice Awards 2006. Watch the awards show on Sunday, August 20th at 8:00pm ET on FOX.

--Eighteen of Mariah's hit songs from 1990 to 2005 are included on iTunes' Essentials 1960-2005 compilation albums. Below is iTunes' blurb about the 1990 Essentials album.

1990 - When the clock struck 12 on December 31, 1989, it signaled more than the death knell to the '80s; it also marked a transitional period that excavated the best pop elements of both the '80s and '90s. For one thing, mainstream icons were still around to pump out Top 40 singles, as were reputable rockers. And then there were such emerging MTV stars as Mariah Carey, Bell Biv Devoe, and, yes, the unavoidable one-two punch of M.C. Hammer and Vanilla Ice.

--From Fox News:

Madonna Tours for the Money, Honey
Why, oh why, is Madonna on tour again? As Jim Farber pointed out yesterday in the Daily News, this is her third major show in six years.

The answer is easy: it’s the money, honey. Like Barbra Streisand, Madonna doesn’t write her own songs. If she had to depend on publishing royalties to keep up her extravagant lifestyle, she’d be broke.

(You can put Cher and Celine Dion in this category, too. Only Mariah Carey was smart enough to make sure her name was on every hit she ever warbled.)

Say Somethin', Anythin' // 6:16 AM EST Updated by Lynn

I was wondering if you had any information on Mariah's current single "Say Somethin'" featuring Snoop Dogg. The cut peaked at No. 79 on the Billboard Hot 100, and then suddenly disappeared, most likely due to low radio impressions.

Is it possible that the cut can re-enter on the charts with the new So So Def remix with the Dem Franchize Boyz steadily growing because remixes help support singles, right? The "Say' Somethin'" urban remix hits music stores like iTunes soon -- if the downloads sell greatly, would it make "Somethin'" come back on the charts as the normal version or will it be listed as the remix? --Percy Maple, Harrisburg, Pa.

Keith Caulfield of Ask Billboard answers:
You're right, "Say Somethin'" has already slipped off The Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at No. 79 and was last seen on the chart dated May 27.

If the digital sales of "Say Somethin'" jump, the song can certainly re-enter the chart. It will remain billed on the charts as "Say Somethin'" (featuring Snoop Dogg) unless the Dem Franchize Boyz remix becomes more popular on radio than the Snoop original.

At the same time, if radio stations start playing the So So Def remix of "Say Somethin'," its radio audience will be combined with the original version (plus the assorted dance mixes and such that are floating around). That way, we'll get the complete radio airplay picture for the song in all of its various versions.

Name-Dropping Lil Jon Plans To Rock With Mariah, Snoop, R. Kelly // 10:27 AM EST Updated by Casey

'I'mma give them something fresh,' rapper says about Crunk Rock, which he hopes to release in September.

Lil Jon's new philosophy on making hit albums: Why wait until you're almost done recording to secure the big-name collaborators? Jon just started recording his Crunk Rock LP in a Las Vegas studio, and he already has a few aces up his sleeve.

"I think me and R. Kelly are about to do some new stuff together," Jon said backstage at the Boost Mobile RockCorps concert at Atlanta's Fox Theatre (see "Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Big Boi Rock The Crowd; Game Remembers 2Pac At ATL Benefit"). "Two weeks into my record, and we already hooking up. I got with him on my last album, but I waited until I was almost at the end. Hooking up with him early is going to be crazy. I'm supposed to get one with Mariah and I got one with Snoop that's crazy!

"The album is going to be stupid — as they say in the Bay, 'dumb, yellow bus,' " he added. "It's going to be that crazy. I'm just trying to give people good music on this album. Try something different. Just experiment. People are scared to try things. I'm gonna give them some stuff they would expect so they don't look at me like I'm crazy, but I'mma give them something fresh."

There's no set release date on Crunk Rock, but Jon hopes it drops in the fall, maybe as early as September (see "Lil Jon Wants To Double His Gold By Becoming King Of Rock").

The album's first single is "Snap Yo Fingers," and if you want to know the story behind the phat gold rope Jon wears in a video for the song, check out the feature "The New Gold Rush: The Dookie Rope Returns."

Super Fan's Review of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Experience // 5:51 PM EST Updated by Casey

Kelly Kines, the Mariah Super Fan who competed against her hero during a trivia game segment on Friday's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," was kind enough to e-mail Mariah Daily a review of her experience.

So, honestly, I never imagined any of the last 24 hours, not even in my wildest dreams. All I can say is that it was a long, yet wonderful experience. So, first thing's first, I was picked to do the show literally the same day. "Why?" you ask? I don’t know. I’m sure some out there will agree and question the reasoning as to why I was picked. Like, "Oh, hell naw! Why her? Ugh!" But, hey, I can’t please everybody all the time. So, if you were not picked, I am so sorry. Believe me, the whole time I wished and prayed they had picked someone else too. So, I received the call at almost 11:00 AM informing me I was going to go up against Mariah. So, I was scrambling to figure things out like a crazy woman! I had to be at the show by 4:30 PM to prep and go over the segment with producers, yada, yada, yada. Let’s just say, I was nervous the whole time. So, after everything, I signed release forms and I had to wait... and wait... and wait some more. Luckily, I got to see some of my friends and they were more than comforting. Quick shout-outs to Ruth and Nathan (Guys, I tried! I love you guys forever!), Frank, Jimmy, Lynn (I’m so sorry! I didn’t have much time to do what I wanted!) OT and Joey. Finally, around 8:05 PM Mariah arrived. I saw her come and do a bit of her interview before they told me it was “showtime.” Basically, I was thinking, “Okay, something happen so I don’t have to go out there!” But, I had to do what I needed to do. These people (the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" producers) had the utmost faith in me, and I didn’t want them to look bad and never do a fan-related segment again (for any other star’s fans). So, let's just say I went out there and did what I had to do.

Mariah was so beautiful and gracious! That woman never ceases to amaze me. She is the epitome of cool and class. She is CC (cool n' classy). I REALLY didn’t want to beat her, but that scrapbook was on the line. Quick note: that wasn’t mine. HAHA! Joey, I love you for letting me borrow that! I couldn’t let Mariah win that. She had already told me that the scrapbook was going home with her (LOL). So, if it wasn’t for that scrapbook, I wouldn’t have won. Seriously. The last thing I wanted to do was make MC look bad or anything (she never could, only me, but her never). But, I really didn’t want to do that. I mean, she is my hero, the woman I have admired for oh, so long (sighs)! But, in the end, Mariah just couldn’t have that scrapbook. HAHA! So, yes, Mariah was a stone groove the whole night. She is so down-to-earth and I really just can’t thank her enough for agreeing to do something like this with a fan. After the show, I had to stay backstage for a while. Finally, it was time to go. I talked to Mariah all the way to her car, and then she had to call it a night. I was stuck in Hollywood clubbing traffic til almost 12:30 AM and that was that. So, all in all, it was an amazing experience! I can’t thank Gina Rainville, Tara, Rich Brown, Mariah Carey, and Jimmy Kimmel enough! Okay, now I wanted to do this on TV, but I really didn’t get the chance, so I will do it now...

  • The entire Honey B. Fly community (in which my Mariah knowledge was developed and put to good use): Everyone I ever talked to there, thank you! Even if we had some not-so-nice moments, misunderstandings, or we sadly do not speak any longer, just know it's all good, and that Mariah has some pretty damn amazing fans! You guys are the best!

  • Gina: You are so cool and amazing!

  • Mariah, and her whole staff: Thanks for being so great to me! Seriously, you made this girl happy for the rest of her life! Okay, for the time being. HAHA!

  • Jackson: You are so cute! Continue doing your cute little thing!

  • LA fans: Way to represent! You are the best lambs in all the land!

  • Mariah Daily crew: I wanted to shout you guys out so bad! But, I really didn’t have the moment to. Im sowwie!

  • Rob Zombie fans: Shut up! You girls were rude! But, we give the haters positive attitudes!

So, yeah... let's just say I don’t have to be on TV ever again! Byeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Grand tour vs. not so grand? // 1:46 PM EST Updated by Casey

    Madonna doesn't forget.

Years ago, Mariah Carey paid Her Madgesty a backhanded compliment by telling an interviewer how she grew up listening to the songs of the 11-years-older star. So, sources claim, it's no wonder the 47-year-old diva is taking delight in measuring her ticket sales against those of the 36-year-old songbird.

Last week, a spy tells us, Madonna was getting ready to go onstage in Chicago when someone told her Carey had been forced to cancel three tour dates. (Billboard reports that Madge's "Confessions" tour is on track to gross a record-breaking $200 million.)

"Madonna laughed hysterically," according to a source. "She has been asking her tour promoters to E-mail her Mariah's numbers!"

Madonna is also said to have been tickled to hear that Carey didn't appreciate her musical director, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, revealing on TV that he'd been inspired by Madonna's show in L.A.

Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg, argues that Madonna doesn't give a fig about Carey's ticket sales — and "she has no negative feelings toward Mariah."

A Carey rep argues, "Her tour is selling really well. She's canceled a few cities so she can add shows in larger cities. Toronto and Vancouver are sold out. So is her Madison Square Garden show. She's adding a Jones Beach show Sept. 3."

After three years off the road, Mariah's come to Hollywood to rehearse for her new tour. But while she clearly has a plan, getting kidnapped at the airport by Access Hollywood's Billy Bush was probably not part of it.

With that, let the adventures of Billy and Mimi begin.

Billy made his way to the airport to greet Mariah as she landed. While she thought she was headed straight to rehearsals for her summer tour, Billy had something a bit more adventurous in mind for the newly svelte Mariah and her pooch Jack. "I hope you are in a flexible mood. We might take a detour – or two," Billy grinned.

She would soon find out that was the understatement of the year as we kidnapped Mariah for an adventure in her tricked-out tour bus. "So I guess this is your ride?" Billy said upon seeing the fully furnished, lavishly decked out vehicle. "This is my temporary home," Mariah said.

The first stop on the misadventure of Mariah – the entertainment capitol of L.A.: Universal Studios Hollywood for the "Mummy" ride of a lifetime. "Does anyone know this woman?" Billy asked the crowd of theme park-goers, eliciting a scream from the fans who immediately recognized Mariah and began snapping photos. "Are they going to come on the roller coaster with us?" Mariah laughed.

Soon, Billy saw what it was like to be a superstar as he found himself swept along on what, for Mariah, is an everyday occurrence – surrounded by eager fans. And as Billy saw, Mariah is truly a giver. She stopped and waved to the fans, even chatting with a few. "You're so beautiful," one young fan yelled. "So are you," Mariah smiled back.

And while getting on the ride, Mariah made the summer (actually make that the life) of an unsuspecting fan, as she sat down right next to a young lady and buckled up. "I'm going to cry," the woman said.

For obvious safety reason, Access Hollywood's cameras couldn't accompany Billy and Mariah on the ride, but their microphone did. "Billy get your hand off my shoulder," Mariah joked. "Sorry honey, I'm scared," he replied.

And after the ride, it was more madness as the two tried to weave their way through an intense crush of fans. "You gotta love a random amusement park stop by, it's like a drive-by amusement park moment," Mariah said. "It's awesome," Billy agreed.

As they make their way back to the bus, it's more hordes of fans to navigate. And after stopping to sign an autograph for a cute little girl, and getting rid of one overly aggressive grown man with a camera, they finally make their way onto the bus. "A success," Billy notes. "A little chaos. A little action. And everyone's in one piece." But little did they know things were just heating up as they headed off to their next stop – the Hollywood Walk of Fame for a little star gazing.

And sure enough, once again, the fans took notice of who was there right away. "I think they knew we were coming," Billy said, as they stepped foot off of the bus and onto the sidewalk. "It looks like a few of your closest friends are here to say hello."

Try thousands of friends, all cramming the sidewalk to catch a glimpse and take a photo with Mariah. Then, Billy unveiled his next surprise. "We are taking you somewhere very special," he told her. "Ok, what are we doing?" Mariah wondered. "Your idol is Marilyn Monroe," Billy said. "Yes. I'm a very big fan of hers," Mariah confirmed. "Well, we are going to pay tribute and visit her foot and hand prints on the Walk of Fame," Billy revealed. "Oh get out of here! I've never been there before," she beamed.

As they made their way to Marilyn's famous prints, Mariah was curious to see if hers matched up. "Let's see if they match," Billy suggested. "They definitely don't match because I think my feet are bigger," she laughed.

As far as her hands? "I'm afraid to bend over. There are a few too many people here," she joked. "Am I the greatest date or what?" Billy asked. "Aww Billy, nobody else does this," she smiled. "He is the best date ever."

But alas, it was finally time to drop Mariah off at the sound stage for her tour rehearsals. "That was very fun," Mariah told Billy. "The adventures of Mimi and Billy are over and now let the adventures of Mimi begin," he said.

"Alright good. I've got to get focused to go on tour but I thank you for my adventure with Billy," she smiled to the camera. "Nobody else does this but you, so I thank you."

Scam Claims Mariah Carey Performance // 8:32 PM EST Updated by Casey

What seemed like a fun event for a good cause turned out to be a scam.

An organization out of Greensboro claimed star Mariah Carey was coming to the Triad to perform at a charity event.

Matt Cecil was among those buying tickets to see Carey at Club Odyssey in Winston-Salem. He said he bought four tickets after learning of the event from a flyer posted at the club.

The flyer said "United Talented People of Pride" and it claimed Carey would perform at a breast cancer benefit at the club.

Cecil said he paid $30 each for the tickets.

Club Odyssey tried calling the group, as did WXII 12 News. But its numbers were disconnected and the organization's Web site no longer exists.

The people who bought tickets were left high and dry.

Cecil said he doesn't hold the club responsible for the scam. The Better Business Bureau has no record of "United Talented People of Pride."

Jermaine Dupri Promises Mariah, Janet Duet On New Album // 8:12 AM EST Updated by Lynn

'I got a mean idea, so look for it,' JD says about planned duet on Jackson's 20 Years Old.

Earlier this month, Jermaine Dupri demonstrated he's a true showman by bringing out Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson during his set at the Summer Jam radio festival in New Jersey. Now, Dupri is thinking about how to pull the ultimate trump card and get the two legends on the same song.

In April, Carey hinted that she was very open to the collaboration (see "Mariah Down To Work With Janet; Eve's Loss Is Busta's Gain"). "He never talked to me about that, but if Jermaine has a concept, we should go and write something," she told MTV Radio. "I love Janet. I've been a big fan of Janet since 'Con-tro-ol!' "

On Friday, JD said he is, in fact, developing an idea for Carey and his longtime girlfriend to do it up right on a song.

"It's gonna happen on this record," he said about the collaboration. "Please believe that. I got a mean idea, so look for it. We definitely gonna do a repackage on [Janet's 20 Years Old] once it comes out. Hopefully it's successful and people buy into it, then I'm going back in the studio.

What happened was, when I was working with Janet, I got into the zone. This was my first time ever working with her. When I get into my zone with artists, I just want to create and create and create. That's what happened with me and Mariah [on The Emancipation of Mimi]. We don't run outta ideas; we keep coming up with sh--. The closer I get to that idea [for Janet and Mariah], the more I know where it should be at. It's feeling like it's gonna happen."

Dupri also said the Janet and Mariah record - if he pulls it off - could appear on the initial run of 20 Years Old.

"It depends on how quick my mind moves," he said. "We're mixing records for [20 Years Old]. We're not done yet. When I did Usher's My Way album, the last record I created was 'You Make Me Wanna ... .' I'm thinking I might go back in, and I might tamper with it. ... We gotta try to figure it out."

JD hopes to have the Janet and Mariah duet mapped out and recorded before Carey goes on tour this summer. Dupri also said he's accepted Mariah's invite to go out on the road with her. He won't be at every single date, but he promises to pop up here and there and support his homie.

"I'mma go to the hot spots," he said of the tour. "She's going to Miami first. I'm definitely gonna be at that show. I'm definitely gonna be in New York, in Atlanta. That's my partner. Whatever she needs me to do, I'm there."

When he's not onstage, Jermaine already has a full plate of production scheduled for the rest of the year. He's working on a slew of his So So Def artists, including Johnta Austin, Manish Man, T. Waters and Young Capone. Bow Wow's next album is on Dupri's to-do list, as are records from 3LW, JoJo, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Frankie J, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Nelly, Usher ("We gonna start on his record at the end of the year") and Mariah Carey once she gets off tour.

Last night, Mariah visited "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to promote her "The Adventures of Mimi" tour. Mariah at "Jay Leno" Taping // 1:46 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah was in Los Angeles today to tape her interview on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." Fans at the studio saw her arrive at 4:05pm, where she greeted them briefly and promised to come back out after the taping, as she was running late for the taping at 4:00pm.

Fans who were waiting outside saw the tour bus leave at around 4:45pm without Mariah. Following her appearance on the "Tonight Show," Mariah stayed on for an exclusive interview with Access Hollywood (note that earlier reports point towards a sneak peek inside Mariah's tour bus). Mariah, true to her word, came back outside around 6:30pm where she greeted fans and treated them to autographs before leaving in a private car.

--Last Friday, during an interview with Sandra Bernhard on the morning show, The View, Star Jones brought up that Sandra said she was responsible for the success of "The Emancipation of Mimi." Sandra said she was responsible for Mariah's initial nervous breakdown by revealing in a show 8 years ago that Mariah was suddenly "hanging out with the brothers" in a very "sexy, hot way" and that it was "slightly odd that suddenly she was out as a slightly black lady." Barbara Walters chimed in and said that she had interviewed Mariah before and never did she deny being bi-racial. Sandra backpedalled and said, "Oh I don't know if she had denied it or not besides it was just a joke." A joke that didn't elicit any laughter. Watch the video here.

Carey: 'I Dont Need Help Drinking Water' // 5:20 AM EST Updated by Casey

Pop superstar Mariah Carey has laughed off reports she ordered an assistant help her drink water at a recent album signing. During the London event, the We Belong Together singer was photographed drinking water from a glass held up to her mouth by an employee. The 36-year-old says, "That is so, ugh...I was at a record signing and I signed about 3,000 records. Most artists will go for maybe half and hour, then they leave everybody standing there. "I always feel guilty doing that, so I stay for a long time. I'm signing with one hand and shaking somebody else's hand, so someone tapped me to take a sip of water, and then they took a picture. "But believe me, I'd much rather hold my own glass! I can't even get a proper assistant, how am I gonna get a cup-holder?"

"Cristal" Faces Boycott From Hip-Hop Community // 6:53 PM EST Updated by Lynn

The expensive beverage, Cristal Champagne was the 8th most mentioned brand on Billboard's Top 100 chart in 2005 with 35 namedrops. The brand has been mentioned in songs by such artists as Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Trina, Lloyd Banks and The Game. The company, however, views its embrace by the hip hop community with "curiosity and serenity."

In a special edition of The Economist Magazine, the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal described the rap community’s promotion of the drink as "unwelcome attention." "What can we do?" said managing director Frédéric Rouzaud in the article titled Bubbles & Bling. "We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

In reaction to the statement made by Rouzaud, Jay-Z and his upscale sports lounge, The 40/40 Club, have announced that they will no longer be serving Cristal Champagne and Jay-Z will further help lead the boycott against Cristal Champagne in the world of hip-hop. "I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."

Carey Laughs Off Houston Duet Rumours // 4:32 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey has rebuffed speculation she plans to record a duet with Whitney Houston, in a bid to reignite the troubled singer's career. Houston has been dogged by reports questioning her health and alleged drug use in recent months, but Carey insists she is not aware the I Will Always Love You star is experiencing any problems. She says, "I did not say (we'd record this duet), because to me that sounds like I'm saying she has a problem, and I wouldn't say that. I haven't spoken to Whitney in a long time. "When I knew her, she was really fun and cool and just one of the most talented people in the world, so, of course, I support her, but I would never say she's going through a hard time because she never told me that."

Mariah Miscellaneous // 11:47 PM EST Updated by Casey

    News Tidbits
--From People.com: Mariah Carey shines as she arrives at Reid's birthday bash Saturday night. The posh party brought out a who's who of music and Hollywood, including Janet Jackson, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Oprah Winfrey and about 300 other guests, who dined on sushi and watched Lionel Richie perform.

--After debuting at #63 on the official UK singles chart last week (due to downloads), "Say Somethin'" moves up 36 positions to #27 this week on the heels of its physical release. Please continue to support the single!

--The "Say Somethin'" music video debuts at #9 on AOL Music's Top 11 Video Countdown Show. Although the video is currently #16 over at MSN Music, it has plummeted a staggering 56 positions to #98 at Yahoo! Music. Please continue to support the video!

--From Sky News: Mariah plans to write a novel about a diva. She said: "I get called a diva so I thought why not wrote about it. You're meant to write about what you know."

    Mariah Mentions
--From The Age: Melisma just goes on and on, like a single syllable sung by Mariah Carey. Survivor Mariah has been the undisputed queen of melisma since her debut single, Vision of Love, in 1990. Years later, Beyonce Knowles would say, "After I heard Vision, I started doing runs". You, Beyonce, and every pop star wannabe in the freakin' world.

It would be disingenuous, however, to suggest melisma is new. It has a history that predates Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. Melisma is used in Gregorian chants and in Muslim prayers. It also has a grand tradition in America's black churches, and hence in secular soul and R&B. It is from here, of course, that Mariah and the pop idol contestants take their cue.

--From the Galveston County Daily News: According to [Felicia] Garcia, singing is much more than “having a voice,” and says she admires Mariah Carey’s voice and Beyonce Knowles voice, performance and athleticism. The other important factor, says Garcia, is a singer’s ability to “play the character in the song.”

--From MSNBC.com: Proving to be the hottest ticket this summer, this year’s “American Idols Live” is anticipated to run neck-and-neck with the season’s other mega tours, which include the likes of Mariah Carey, Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones. Blockbuster ticket sales led to additional dates and new stops, expanding “American Idols Live” to a 60-date tour, with the final show on September 24 in Wilkes-Barre, Penn.

--From calendarlive.com: Yet as pleasant a voice as [Katharine] McPhee has — think of Mariah Carey with restraint — it got lost next to Bocelli's powerful pipes, as well as in the increasingly overdone arrangement.

--From TheOnlineWire.com: Odds-makers have a little more faith in Britney [Spears] starring as a "Bond Girl", in the next James Bond movie (+5000). More or less the same faith BETonSPORTS celebrities gurus have in Eminem singing a duet with Mariah Carey (also offered at +5000).

--From the StarPhoenix: Think doilies can't possibly be sexy? A gander at Anna Kosturova's crochet creations (at Jewliette and Room 430 boutique or www.annakosturova.com) will instantly dispel that myth. Kosturova's white bikinis, maillots and cover-ups are so hot they were featured in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue on Rebecca Romijn and Elle MacPherson. Paparazzi also spotted Mariah Carey frolicking in the waves sporting Kosturova's va-voom sequined Beach Goddess bikini.

--From Guardian Unlimited: Is there really a need for a rock camp specifically for women and girls? It is now 15 years since the Riot Grrrl movement began, and a decade since the throes of "girl power". Today there are numerous high-profile female recording artists, from Karen O to Cat Power via Madonna and Meg White, while Mariah Carey remains one of the most successful artists in history.

--From the New York Daily News: By contrast, [Christina] Milian's heavily hyped album sold fewer than half that number — a meager 50,202 units — in the week after its May 16 release. Never mind that Island Def Jam laid on a promotional budget worthy of Mariah Carey.

--From /FILM: Based on the 2001 Japanese horror movie Kairo which was directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Pulse stars Kristen Bell and Christina Milian. Jim Sonzero (a music video director who co-directed Mariah Carey's "Can't Let Go") directed a script written by Wes Craven and Ray Wright.

--From the Palm Beach Post: How's that for vowel power? I haven't seen such a comeback since Richard M. Nixon, Mariah Carey and the Buffalo Bills' 1993 victory over the Houston Oilers.

--From TCPalm: Local educators are promising flexibility for teenagers who may be more concerned at age 14 with becoming Albert Pujols or Mariah Carey than a marine biologist.

--From PE.com: Camille [Abordo], a charismatic, confident girl with a big smile, hopes to follow in the footsteps of her idol, Mariah Carey.

A "Def Jam Diet"? // 6:46 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Music world's A-listers were on hand to celebrate L.A. Reid's 50th birthday at Nobu 57 in New York City, July 11th.

Jay-Z took to the dance floor with Beyoncé as Lionel Richie sang "Easy (Like Sunday Morning)." John Legend swayed with the crowd, and Carey, who arrived two hours late, danced with manager Benny Medina.

Madge And Mimi In Japan // 4:59 PM EST Updated by Casey

The two biggest female pop artists in the world, Madonna and Mariah Carey, announced Japan tours practically on top of each other.

Madonna did it first. She'll be making her first Japan tour in 13 years, if you want to call two concerts a tour. Madge will be wowing them at the Osaka Dome on September 16 and the Tokyo Dome September 20. With top-end ticket prices peaking at about $500, there's a lot to be wowed about.

Mariah Carey is more of a familiar face in Japan. She played there three years ago. But now that she's on the wings of her biggest-selling album ever, Mimi can probably guarantee filling Japan's biggest hall, the Saitama Super Arena, two nights in a row October 20-21. She'll also be doing Nagoya on October 18 and Osaka on October 24-25.

However, neither American singer has received half the buzz that home-girl Hikaru Utada received recently when her own national tour was announced. Her first album in four years, Ultra Blue, was released June 14. She'll embark on an 11-city, 22-date Japan tour in July, which will also include two consecutive nights at the Saitama Super Arena.

"France Soir" Re-Launches With Mariah // 3:59 PM EST Updated by Lynn

After months of inoperation, the French daily newspaper, France Soir is back with a new team and Mariah on its cover!

Jason Fraser, the irrepressible British newspaper photographer, has been hired to inject new life into one of France's great titles. He tells Ian Burrell what the attraction was, and why Mariah Carey was the cover-star for the first edition of 'France Soir.'

Fraser has been in the City of Light for 11 days, masterminding the return to the news-stands of one of the most famous names in European newspapers, France Soir. As a photographer, Fraser is famously both fast and fastidious. He is, with only hours to go to relaunch, fizzing with nervous energy. He had fallen asleep on the carpet at 5am the previous morning, having designed the paper's first-ever World Cup wallchart and finished off an interview and picture exclusive with the pop singer Mariah Carey that he arranged, wrote and photographed himself.

He has adapted the France Soir masthead to resemble that of The Sun and beneath it he has placed a large "No 1" to signal the new era and make the paper "a collector's edition". A Fraser shot of Mariah Carey, sipping from a large coffee-cup, dominates the front page. The next two pages feature his Mariah interview. Zinedine Zidane's final game for France on French soil provides the back-page lead and the main jacket is bolstered with an eight-page pullout on horse-racing. The lay-out is cleaner, less-cluttered and more picture-led than the old France Soir.

Against the odds, the new France Soir team pull it off. By one in the morning Fraser and owner Jean-Pierre Brunois are at the printing presses in St. Denis, gazing on their new arrival.

TIME Magazine Interviews Mariah // 8:02 PM EST Updated by Casey

The Emancipation of Mimi became the best-selling album of 2005. Now Mariah Carey hopes her current tour will extend that career high note

Rebecca Winters Keegan (for TIME): In high school I washed dishes at your summer camp.
    Mariah Carey: Get out!

RWK: Does Camp Mariah have a song?
MC: They have a ton of hot cheers.

RWK: How does it feel to be emancipated?
MC: There will always be parts of me that need emancipating. But it feels nice to allow yourself to be who you are.

RWK: Do you have any rituals on tour?
MC: Rest, humidity and prayer. In New York, I have a steam room with a bed in it. Everything is waterproof.

RWK: What's the first concert you ever saw?
MC: I didn't exactly have the funds for concerts. There was a time when the only joy I got was recording my outgoing answering-machine messages. My roommate and I left a message once describing when we had no heat, no water, and the fly-paper situation was bleak. It ended up being the message that the record company heard when they called to sign me. I was mortified.

RWK: You'll play a waitress in a movie called Tennessee. Were you afraid to act again after Glitter?
MC: I was honored Lee Daniels called me. He produced The Woodsman and Monster's Ball. He's a risk taker. Obviously it would be a risk in a lot of people's minds to cast me. But he never saw Glitter.

RWK: Have you ever sent dogs running with a high note?
MC: No, but I got a letter from a girl who said she was listening to one of my songs and every time I hit a particular high note, the garage door would open or close.

    RWK: Thanks, Mariah.
MC: Hey, thanks for doing the dishes.

From the June 19, 2006 issue of TIME magazine (on newsstands tomorrow).

Life & Style: How Mariah Got So Thin! // 3:59 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Life & Style reveals the personal diet and exercise secrets behind Mariah's amazing 32-pound weight loss

The comeback of Mariah Carey no longer refers only to the singer's platinum-selling album The Emancipation of Mimi. The 5-foot-9 star is suddenly rocking a killer figure worthy of a spotlight all its own! Over the past four months, Mariah, 36, who has dropped about 30 pounds and according to a pal wants to lose at least give more, has trimmed and toned her way to her sexiest physique ever. "She looks amazing," Leslie Sloane-Zelnik, Mariah’s publicist, tells Life & Style.

So what's her secret? Mariah's been sticking to what she calls the morsel diet, her own approach to minimeals, or small portions of food throughout the day. "I kind of invented it," says Mariah. "Basically you can have a tiny bit of everything you want – but it has to be less than a forkful."

Mimi's been getting physical, too. "I'm working out like mad," says the star, who according to her pal used to avoid breaking a sweat. "You can punch me in the stomach and feel how tight it is." Mariah's daily hour-long gym sessions and water workouts have clearly paid off for both her mind and body – Gillette Venus razor brand recently made Mimi its Celebrity Legs of a Goddess honoree! Says a longtime friend, "She feels like she's the total package now." We agree!

Mariah also graces the pages of this week's issues of In Touch, OK!, People and Star magazines.

DJ Tracy Remixes "Fly Like A Bird" // 3:52 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Miami-based DJ Tracy Young, better known for remixing Madonna and currently DJing for all the "Confessions on a Dance Floor" tour after-parties, has revealed in a recent interview with Gay.com that she's working on a remix for Mariah's "Fly Like A Bird."

Your work with Madonna opened so many doors. You then started remixing other artists, including Cyndi, Mariah, etc. What song do you think you helped the most?
I don't think I really helped it, but I do get a lot of compliments of my remix of Cyndi Lauper's "Shine."

You're doing Mariah Carey's "Fly Like a Bird." How is that?
Yeah, we did that, and we're trying to work out the vocals because Mariah's very hands-on about how her vocals sound. We're just trying to see if she's going to recut her vocals or not. But we have the record done.

The remix is called, "Fly Like a Bird” (Tracy’s Needin You remix). Find more information about Tracy and her work by logging on to her official website.

And Simpson found inspiration in another diva – Mariah Carey – for the CD, due out Aug. 29. "It's a lot like Mariah's record, you know. News Tidbits // 5:39 AM EST Updated by Lynn

--The comeback of Mariah Carey no longer refers only to the singer's platinum-selling album The Emancipation of Mimi. The 5-foot-9 star is suddenly rocking a killer figure worthy of a spotlight all its own! Over the past four months, Mariah, 36, who has dropped about 30 pounds and according to a pal wants to lose at least five more, has trimmed and toned her way to her sexiest physique ever. "She looks amazing," Leslie Sloane-Zelnik, Mariah’s publicist, tells Life & Style. For great pictures, Mariah’s diet, and much more, pick up the latest issue of Life & Style today!

--It seems as though Mariah might have the opportunity to sing a duet with one of her idols, Marilyn Monroe. New technology was discovered that could allow engineers to produce a duet with the sex symbol posthumously. The song, "Down Boy," is an unreleased recording by Marilyn that Jack Allen, a former TV exec, found while looking through old reels of the star's last works before her death. "All the die-hard Marilyn fans have heard of this song,'' says Allen. ''There's a lot of legend encircling her about songs that were supposedly recorded and never filmed, or filmed and cut out, the footage that must exist somewhere, all that.'' Allen is contacting the publicists of Mariah, Gwen Stefani, and Madonna to see if they would be interested in such a project.

--Mariah with "Hero" as track #10 is among the featured artists on "Voices: >From The FIFA World Cup" CD compilation. Released on June 6th under the Sony/BMG label, the CD can be purchased for $12.98 at Amazon.com.

--Daily Record UK review of "Say Somethin'": "She may be the biggest-selling female artist ever, but for most of us you'd be hard pressed to remember five of her biggest tunes. And this certainly isn't one of them."

--From New York Post: Steven Gaines' book, "The Sky's the Limit: Passion and Property in Manhattan" writes about what it's like to have Donna Karan as a client and get past her co-op board... to find out what kept Mariah Carey from buying Barbra Streisand's apartment.

--Last night saw the finale of Nouvelle Star, the French version of American Idol, where finalist Dominique sang Mariah's "Hero" for the competition. Unfortunately, she lost her bid for the Idol crown to Christophe.

--From Long Island Press: The Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts is known for alumni like Natalie Portman and Mariah Carey, but its most meaningful contribution may be graduates who enter less glamorous professions and use the creative skills they discovered or refined to advance their companies and communities.

Mariah Carey spoke with Rita Foley of the Associated Press (AP) about what to expect of her "The Adventures of Mimi" tour.

Mariah calls this tour a celebration of the album's success. "I have my 16th and 17th number one with this record, and I think that's a victory for me and my fans and so when we were thinking about going on the road or not going on the road, I said, 'how can I not do this? You know, really for the fans'."

Ask Billboard: Mimi's Next Adventure // 8:42 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Hello Keith,
I was wondering if you had any more news on Mariah Carey's upcoming tour, The Adventures of Mimi: the Voice, the Hits, the Tour, such as ticket prices, etc.?

Also, what kind of potential do you think this tour has? Will it be just another one of her flop tours or will this be one of the big tours of the year? Also, what are the stats of Mariah's past tours?

I had also heard that she has a new album in the works. Do you have any information on this? And lastly, where does Mariah's album sales stand in the U.S., as well as worldwide?
    Adam Holmes, Indianapolis

Keith Caulfield of Ask Billboard answers:

Mariah Carey's tour, titled The Adventures of Mimi: the Voice, the Hits, the Tour, will kick off its North American leg on Aug. 5 in Miami at the American Airlines Arena. The trek is in support of "The Emancipation of Mimi," which was the biggest selling album of 2005 in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Ticket prices for the tour range from $15.50 to $300, depending on the venue and seat location. We found $15.50 tickets at the Pepsi Center in Denver for Sept. 18 and $300 seats at her Trump Taj Mahal date in Atlantic City, N.J., on Aug. 17. However, the majority of the tickets at most venues are priced somewhere in the range of $40 to $150.

The $300 tickets at the Taj Mahal are really out of the ordinary and are only priced that way because the venue is much smaller than the rest of the venues she's playing. The Taj Mahal arena's maximum capacity is 6,000, while the Pepsi Center in Denver can hold up to 15,000 to 20,000.

Since Carey had such a phenomenal year, it's likely that the tour could do very well. Historically, however, she hasn't been a huge draw. Her 2003 tour was scaled back from arenas to theaters after slow initial ticket sales. (According to Carey, the show was altered in order to give fans a more intimate experience.) The trek, dubbed An Intimate Evening With Mariah Carey, grossed $6 million from the 23 dates that were reported to Billboard. Only eight of the 23 shows were sell-outs. Box office information for several of the shows was not reported to Billboard.

Her previous outing, 2000's Rainbow Tour, grossed $7 million from the nine shows that were reported to Billboard. The trek was a one-night-only affair, and spent only a month in North America, playing arenas. All of the nine shows that were reported to Billboard were sell-outs.

Switching gears, we don't have any information about a new studio album in the works for Carey.

Since SoundScan began tracking sales data in early 1991, Carey has sold 49.1 million albums in the U.S. (including her "Glitter" soundtrack). That number is probably a little less than expected, only because her smash self-titled album was released in the summer of 1990, so a significant chunk of its sales are not accounted for in SoundScan's database.

As for worldwide sales, there isn't an independent firm that tabulates actual global sales. Generally, one has to rely on information provided by a record label (which can be trumped up) about the number of albums shipped to retail.

Carey hopes Dupri is up for a tour // 4:43 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey is expecting a "whole slew" of featured guests on her upcoming tour, to help re-create her classic collabos, but the guest she's most looking forward to seeing is Jermaine Dupri. "I would hope Jermaine is going to make it to a couple of shows," she said. "I love everybody I work with, but Jermaine is my favorite person to collaborate with because he is a great artist as well as producer as well as collaborator. We work together. A lot of times, I will just work on a melody and lyrics by myself and get a beat from somebody or tell them, 'Here's what I'm feeling,' and they'll play it on the piano. But Jermaine and I can sit there, work together, and really collaborate and have fun."

Mariah Carey appears on stage during the 13th Annual Hot 97's Summer Jam at Giants Stadium June 4, 2006 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Click on each thumbnail for a larger, full-scale view.

    From MTV News:
Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson were on the same stage, on the same night during the same set. No, the legends didn't perform together, but were both special surprise guests of Jermaine Dupri as he performed with Dem Franchise Boyz and Da Brat on Sunday at New York radio station Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert.

Jermaine Dupri got the award for the most stunting with guest appearances on Sunday. Not only did JD bring out his girlfriend, Janet Jackson, during his set with Dem Franchize Boys (Janet kissed him on the lips before walking off and waving to the crowd), but he also invited Mariah Carey. For some reason, MC could not sing, but they played "We Belong Together," and the crowd sang along. Mariah mimed the words and waved to the crowd as well.

Blown Away at Fresh Air Fund Gala // 12:48 PM EST Updated by Lynn

The Fresh Air Fund folks took seriously our ribbing at last year's gala about the aromatic situation outside Tavern on the Green in Central Park. This year, they attempted to remove the horse manure fragrance from the air with a leaf-blower. That didn’t work, and in fact, made things worse by adding clouds of dirt and dust to the stench. But mother nature saved the day with torrential thunderstorms that created a delightful river inside the press tent.

Correctly realizing that guests like Mariah Carey were not going to slosh their way through for the cameras, organizers moved the media folks to another tent that was dry and odor-free.

And that was most appreciated, since Mariah arrived well after 9 P.M., almost two hours after everybody else. In fact, members of the press arranged a pool, betting on what time Mariah Carey would show up. The winner got $28, and said that if it had been more money, she would have donated it to the Fresh Air Fund. Mariah is a big supporter of this cause, and she gamely got out of her car despite the downpour - accompanied by three umbrella holders, of course.

Movers and shakers that joined Mariah in helping to send inner city kids to the country included John Turturro, Marisa Tomei, Patricia Heaton, Kevin Bacon, Spike Lee, designer Donna Karan and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

Marie Claire UK Interview: All About Mimi // 9:44 PM EST Updated by Lynn

At the start of the decade, Mariah Carey's star looked on the wane - bad record sales and rumours of a breakdown plagued the R&B diva. But, with her latest number-one album and a string of multi-million dollar deals, the queen of excess is ready to reclaim her throne.

'I haven't been out of the apartment for a few days,' Mariah Carey tells me. She's pretty much just woken up. It's 8:30pm on a Friday night, and she's been nocturnal all week. I follow her on a tour of her home - she totters down the hall in a pair of black Agent Provocateur Hollywood Pom Pom mules. Carey says she always wears heels around the house because she walks on her tippy-toes. And, anyway, she says, 'They're not high compared to a street shoe that I would wear, darling!'

Mariah Carey's house is at the top of a tower, a duplex penthouse in TriBeCa, an area of town that has just been named the most expensive in New York City. Her living room on the 5,000sq-ft 17th floor is warm and welcoming, with cushions and flowers - everything is taupe and beige and gold and cream. Marilyn Monroe's white piano, for which Carey paid over £350,000 in October 1999, is surrounded by dainty white ropes. A local soul radio station plays on hidden speakers.

Carey's housekeeper helpfully describes Mariah's outfit as 'around-the-house casual': in addition to the heels, she's wearing black tailored Juicy Couture pants and a tank top, the combination making an offering of her abundant chest. Honestly, the 36-year-old Carey looks stunning and young.

In the large kitchen, Jack, the little terrier, clicks-clacks around the room clad in a glittery collar. Carey's been debating the 'flyness' of his accessory - was it too-too? 'No one's allowed to give him treats but me,' she begins telling me, then her mobile rings. (Her ringtone is Bow Wow's Fresh Amiziz.) She talks for a few seconds, tosses a ball for the dog, then leads me upstairs, to the penthouse's own small penthouse, and out onto a large terrace. Carey wants to turn this space into Club Mimi: fresh air for her and her friends - not like all those crowded and sometimes dangerously smoky joints she says she always ends up in; those inevitable late-night trips to Manhattan's prime celeb hangout, Bungalow 8.

I think we're just about ready for the interview when Jack decides to pee in the corner of the terrace before careering off into a Moroccan-themed room and then off downstairs. 'If he's running around down there he'll attack my drapes,' worries Carey, before hitting the intercom and saying, 'Can you guys grab Jack, please? He's having the time of his life.'

Finally, happy that Jack no longer poses a threat to her curtains, Mariah, surrounded by a hundred plump cushions, kicks off her heels, and snuggles up on the Moroccan couch. She speaks in the low voice she's had all her life. 'The other kids at school would say, "Could you call and pretend to be my mom?'" she recalls. Her barest whisper fills a room in a very strange way, and when she laughs, she laughs a lot. She can, and does, break into flawless song mid-sentence.

This month sees the release of Say Somethin', the latest shiny slice of perfect popular R&B hewn from the rich seam that is Carey's latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi. Written with Pharrell Williams, Carey joins Snoop Dogg on a deceptively infectious musical trip that's guaranteed to be one of the anthems of the summer.

Carey says she hears song bits in her head all the time - fleeting bits of melisma and complicated modulations and melodies - but so briefly that she sometimes has to call her answer phone to record them or have a musician around to help her explore them. She prefers working late at night, in a dark studio. Recently, she's been recording in Anguilla in the West Indies and on the island of Capri, looking out over the Mediterranean. 'I really work well by the water,' she says. And where do these musical ideas come from? 'I don't know where,' she answers. Then, 'No! Obviously, I do - those moments of creative bursts are gifts from God,' she smiles. Over the course of the interview, the only other singers Carey mentions are two much lesser-known gospel masters: Kim Burrell and Karen Clark- Sheard. 'They're just really channeling - it's coming from God. A lot of people, it's too much for them - they can't follow it. It's just too deep for them.'

Carey, whose career nearly stalled and died, has had her revenge, but it's not the one you might think. 'Depending on the designer,' she says, covering herself up in a moment of reflex physical discomfort, 'I'm between a size four and a six [a UK8 and 10].' Then she boldly shows me her flat stomach. She could, she tells me, get down to a size two if she really wanted to, but she won't. She's thin now because it really made her mad when people talked about her being fat. 'I had to change my relationship with food,' she says. 'I know - it sucks.'

'I have a trainer,' Carey continues, 'but she lives on St. Barts, in the West Indies. Of course, only I would have a trainer who lives on St. Barts - but she's fabulous. She weighs one pound soaking wet,' she laughs. 'She is a dictator!' They do water aerobics. "'Encore" is her favourite word.'

But The Emancipation of Mimi and its absurdly huge success after a few difficult years when Carey's singles and albums underperformed was also powered by something else.

'People ask me, "What do you say to all those naysayers who wrote you off?" And I don't have to say anything to them.' She believes the album was a success because she followed her heart and her ear, and she thinks her emotional peace with all her mess of a history shines through. The subtext of the way she talks about her older work is that producers and executives wanted her to make mainstream music; they thought audiences wouldn't get her being herself. 'Or so the record company thought. But I guess they were wrong,' she smiles.

A quick biography. Mariah Carey was the woman who sold the most albums in the Nineties: her first came out in 1990, and her 1993 album, Music Box, has sold tens of millions of copies. In 1998, she divorced her star-making, music-producer husband, Tommy Mottola; they married in 1993 when she was 23 and he was 20 years her senior. In 2001, at the top of her game, she signed a reported £55 million, five-record deal with Virgin.

Her movie, Glitter, was released in September 2001, but had little success at the box office. At nearly the same time, she was hospitalised in Los Angeles, California. The press called it a nervous breakdown; Mariah described herself as suffering from exhaustion. In 2002, she left Virgin by mutual consent, but soon found a new home at Island DefJam. Her comeback was slow: it began with a stellar rendition of the US national anthem at the Super Bowl in February 2002. In late 2002, her poppy album, Charmbracelet was moderately successful. Then came the Grammy grabbing The Emancipation of Mimi.

Carey flexes her fingers, her jewelled butterfly ring flapping. She's comfortable enough with her fame, but not with the way fame works these days. 'People's careers have been made by tabloids, and not much else,' she says. 'It will rule you and consume you and destroy you.' Her one concession to the onus of fame is that she's essentially unwilling to have children. If she meets a man? If she meets a man who shares her spiritual beliefs, and they marry? Then, maybe. 'I know it's old-fashioned,' she says.

Carey classifies her past relationships as dysfunctional (she refuses to talk about current relationships in public) and is extremely wary of gold-diggers. But children? 'You bring them into the world with the handicap of being a famous person's child. Fame has to be something you really want. I asked for this, I have to live with it - whatever that means,' she says. 'But a child you bring into the world doesn't say, "I want to be the child of a famous person," to then be attacked by the world. I feel bad for kids who have to go through that.'

Carey's thoughts on children stem in part, at least, from how acutely she still feels the pain of her own childhood. ‘As a child who grew up without a lot of money and who grew up without a lot of security - or any sense of it, really - I do operate from that,' she says. But she has money now, and hangers-on know it. 'They think they're dealing with Bill Gates, Jr,' she sighs. 'That's how a lot of people look at me, whether they're related to me or not, and it makes me feel bad. I have to work for this. They think I just walk around going, "La-la-la" and money falls out of the sky.'

She deals with her present fortune and past poverty with a combination of self-help work and, of course, music-making. Some publications used Carey's admission that she'd been in therapy to indicate that she was a bit, well, not quite all there. 'People have been going to therapy since whatever, since the beginning of time,' she says. 'I think being able to say I've gone to therapy is something an enlightened person would say, not someone in denial.'

There are other areas is in her life when she's had to deal with that narrow-mindedness - none more so than on issues of race. 'I'm in a room a lot of times with only white people, and they forget and say things that are offensive - and I have to put them in check,' says Carey. and I'm sitting there and I'm thinking I'm either going to have to leave or I'm going to have to talk about it.' But Carey won't be pulling a Nina Simone and renouncing the US any time soon. ‘After travelling the world, I think racism, or ignorance, is everywhere,' Carey explains. 'It's in the US, Italy, France... Even in certain Latin American countries, where it's a very mixed society. It's everywhere.'

While my evening with Carey is almost over, hers - at just gone l0pm on a Friday night - is only beginning. 'My guitar teacher's coming around,' she says. Carey's fingers have little blisters from practice. Then, later, at around 1am, she'll go out and get dinner with a friend at a place that stays open late because she's a good customer.

Mariah Carey has had the best-selling album in America of 2005. And even though she's spending lots of money to make money (she needs to buy property in Los Angeles because the hotel bills are ludicrous when she and her entourage head out west), she's now got enough cash in the bank to coast out her days.

But while she could buy a sunny little island somewhere and make an album whenever she feels like it, instead she has her new Elizabeth Arden perfume deal (she loves working on the perfume, and the perfumers say she has an excellent nose); a new deal with Gillette razors, in which we'll be exposed to many pictures of her fabulous legs; a jewellery and accessories line; and deals with Pepsi and Motorola. She is also working on a new film, called Tennessee. She has become the celebrity that puzzled and, rightly, troubled her when she was younger.

Carey is working all the time - extending, as the marketers say, her brand. Why? Because the little girl who was so afraid of staying poor, whose grandparents disowned her mother for marrying a black man, who has hours and hours of beauty school under her belt and whose mother didn't own a house until Carey bought her one, will never be penniless again. The princess in the tower might finally be happy - especially now, having just been triumphantly vindicated as an artist, but you wonder if she will ever find the security she still so craves. You hope so. Back downstairs at her thick, gilded front door, Carey is wide-awake and ready to get to work. ‘Air kisses!' she commands by way of goodbye, her face beaming.

Mariah Carey's new single, Say Somethin', is available now on Mercury Def Jam.

Mariah Battles Racism // 1:11 PM EST Updated by Casey

Superstar Mariah Carey battles against racism wherever she travels, because people forget she is mixed race. The singer was born to an Irish-American mother and an African-American father. She says, "I'm in a room a lot of times with only white people, and they forget and say things that are offensive - and I have to put them in check. And I'm sitting there and I'm thinking I'm either going to have to leave or I'm going to have to talk about it. "After travelling the world, I think racism, or ignorance, is everywhere. Carey Has Beaten Her Demons // 7:25 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey knows she has overcome her mental problems because she is able to talk freely about her experiences in therapy. The "Butterfly" singer was hospitalised in 2001 suffering from extreme exhaustion following a gruelling touring and recording schedule. But Carey is delighted her "The Emancipation of Mimi" album, which set both awards ceremonies and the charts alight, has silenced those who questioned her sanity. She says, "People have been going to therapy since whatever, since the beginning of time. I think being able to say I've gone to therapy is something an enlightened person would say, not someone in denial."

--Legends Ball. Mariah said she was honored that one of the legends, opera diva Leontyn Price walked up to her to talk about the "We Belong Together" video. Mariah also talked about the diamond drop earrings that Oprah had given her to which she gushed, "Amazing!"

--Her tour musical director, Randy Jackson. She said, "He's cool. Even with all his success, he's still doing this with me."

--Her singing "America The Beautiful." It was at The Palace, Detroit back in 1990 - a time when she only "had one black dress to [my] name." She said it was the defining moment in her life, had never been on TV before, and knew nothing about basketball. She claims, "I never dated basketball players, only one baseball player."

--Her "morsel" diet. It's a forkful of every one of her favorite food.

Mariah ended the interview by announcing the contest to win tickets to her Detroit concert. "It's Mariah. Call in to Channel 955 and be the 95th caller right now to win your tickets to my tour, The Adventures of Mimi. Call now!"

Carey: Ex Still Hung Up On Me // 4:30 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey may be dating someone, but she doesn't expect to hear wedding bells any time soon. "I don't know if I ever want to get married again," Carey told Page Six and "The Insider."

"My last experience [being married to Tommy Mottola] was so oppressive. You know, Tommy called the head of my record label on the day my [last] album came out to find out what it sold. He still can't leave it alone. Why can't he focus on his wife? I don't know if children are in the cards for me. It wouldn't be fair to a child to be born a celebrity. It would be very difficult."

As for her "Adventures of Mimi" tour that she'll start later this month, Carey said, "I hope Karl Lagerfeld can design the outfits. I met him through Andre [Leon Talley] and we have become good friends. He is very funny. And so smart. If he doesn't work with me on the tour, there is another project I want to work with him on." Tickets for Carey's concert go on sale today.

The Macho Male Who Rules Mariah's Life // 4:16 PM EST Updated by Maggie

In the celebrity world there are some so pampered and privileged they can have whatever their heart desires. Mariah Carey's dog Jackson P Muttley is one such lucky celeb.

Emerging from a New York hotel with the curvaceous diva, the Jack Russell made it clear he has a mind of his own. As his glamorous mistress attempted to go off in one direction, Jack tugged on his lead, seeminly inclined to go in quite another.

But then adoring Mariah is used to indulging her pet pooch's whims. Only the best will do for Jack, who flies first class. Economy isn't an option for her canine companion, the star insists, as he's not a "tiny". "He's a very masculine dog," says Mariah. "I'm not going to put him back with someone I don't know who might feed him or something…”

The four-legged friend, who shares her luxurious Big Apple penthouse, is so well-known Japanese fans have apparently set up a website in his honour and even send him presents. According to the singer one of the chief topics on the site is her pedigree pal's swimming antics.

"If I'm running a bath, all of a sudden I'll hear a splash and Jack will have jumped into the tub," reveals Mariah. "His favorite toy is a jet - like the ones you find in pools and hot-tubs. He continually dives under the water and tries to bite the water coming out of the jets."

  • Caption 1: As the pair stepped out into the New York sunshine Jack had clearly chosen where they were heading
  • Caption 2: His initial intent faltered, however..
  • Caption 3: ... as he decided the opposite direction looked far more interesting

For the Record // 4:14 PM EST Updated by Maggie

Mariah Carey is proud of her legs — even if she won't admit whether she's insured them for $1 billion, as rumored, to protect her stake as Gillette's new celebrity spokesperson. The razor company honored the singer on Tuesday at New York's Radio City Music Hall for having "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess," unveiling a 16-foot replica of Carey's stems. "It's a little overwhelming," Carey told MTV News. "I'm not saying that I have [legs of a goddess], Gillette said it." She attributes her leg appeal to genetics, dieting, and working out. Though she was a fast runner in school ("I beat everybody but a boy named Ricky in my sixth-grade class"), Carey said that she prefers to work out in the water. "Other than that, exercise is not my favorite. It is what it is."

News Tidbits // 2:28 PM EST Updated by Liron

--The unveiling of the 16-foot replica of Mariah's legs was apparently meant to be held during Mariah's visit to Today Show. It seems that Mariah was also supposed to perform on the show but a stage that was put together for the performance was unsatisfactory to Mariah's team and had to be taken down. Below are pictures of the stage (before it was taken down) and the legs replica:

--American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee was interviewed today on the syndicated radio show "Kidd Kraddick In The Morning" and talked about being a fan of Mariah's. Katharine said that she saw Mariah in a concert and that Mariah was "ridiculously awesome live". She added that in the last couple of years, Mariah has been her #1 vocal influence and that she's been plugging her a lot lately.

--From the NY Daily News: After years of rampant, obsessive E-mailing, showbiz manager Benny Medina is calling it quits.

"I will no longer be accepting E-mail," the 48-year-old Medina, who counts Mariah Carey and Tyra Banks among his clients, announced the other day. "If it's important, call me. I don't do E-mail." It was his last E-mail - mere months after Medina publicly defended Carey's compulsive BlackBerrying at dinner parties as "commonplace."

--Mariah called into MuchMusic, the Canadian MTV, during MuchOnDemand at about a quarter to six last night to promote her new tour. She chatted with one of the VJ's about coming to Canada, starring in Tennessee and receiving her Gillette Venus "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess" award. She also mentioned that her nephews call her Auntie Riah.

MuchMusic then aired the "Say Somethin'" video and mentioned that the tickets for the shows are going on sale this Friday. They also have banners advertising the tour on their website.

Mariah is also nominated for the annual 17th Annual MuchMusic Video Awards for People's Choice: Favourite International Artist and Best International Artist. The show will be held on June 18th. Click here to vote for Mariah!

--The lyrics to "Say Somethin'" are featured in the latest issue of J-14 magazine.
