--Jane Pratt, founder and editor-in-chief of the lifestyle magazine, Jane replies to queries from readers on the selection of Paris Hilton as the cover girl of the magazine's July 2005 issue, "First we were all set for Mariah Carey (best-selling album, a classier image now but still a hint of scandal, she'd sell well). We were picking a photographer and a date for the shoot when we got a call saying Mariah is looking for a different image and had decided to go with the September cover of one of our competitors. All-righty, then."

"Shake It Off" Video Reviewed by Stylus Magazine // 10:30 AM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey - Shake it Off - [7.0]

Ian Mathers: Aside from the bizarre way her verse briefly emulate R Kelly, this is top quality. Mariah has gotten better at actually conveying emotion with her voice as she’s scaled back the fireworks, and Mr. The Click Five (among others) could take notes at how Carey preserves her self-respect by not allowing someone to treat her like dirt. Those massed Mariah backing vocals are great, and so is the insistent backing piano. All that and a shout-out to Calgon! [8]

Anthony Miccio: Usher is back!!! Oh wait, it's a woman. Anybody else find Jermaine Dupri's vocal interruptions seriously ironic? Shake him off the mixer. [5]

Matt Chesnut: The chorus has so much air-escaping-from-a-balloon breath on it. It’s a good thing. [7]

Alfred Soto: Another welcome example of how nervous breakdowns can do wonders for your sanity. Visions of love don't suit this hussy: let's remember that Mariah's most convincing persona was as Mrs. Tommy Mottola, kicking up sea spray over the lacquered beats of "Honey" and giving Ol' Dirty Bastard a case of the giggles on "Fantasy." An even better mockingbird now than she was gunning for Whitney's throne, Mariah apes Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" and Ready For The World's "Love You Down" in a quest for a guy who can give her love like the kind she gives her Louis Vuitton purse. What she does with the Calgon is between her and her therapist. [7]

Andrew Unterberger: So glad to know for certain that “It’s Like That” was a total red herring—first “We Belong Together,” and now this breathy wonder. She’s still the best vocalist in the world, and we’ll likely never see her equal. It’s good to see her back on top again. [8]

--On Thursday, July 28th, Rihanna was a guest on Regis & Kelly and Regis' wife Joy talked to her after her performance:

Joy: "Do you dance also, as well as you sing?"

Rihanna: "It's part of my culture so I grew up dancing all the time. And then talent - I just started singing. Inspired by Beyonce, people like Mariah Carey, Whitney Huston."

Regis: "Got a lot of good role models out there these days."

--From Virgin: Two of Britain's biggest new bands, Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs are set to team up for a bizarre cover version of a Mariah Carey song.

Nick Baines from Kaiser Chiefs told The Sun: "We talked about doing a festive single with Bloc Party, like a sort of limited-edition cover."

Mariah Carey Shakes Off Costume After Costume In New Video // 5:51 AM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey shakes it off in her next video — so much so that she's practically nude, twice.

Not that we get to see much, of course, but Carey keeps viewers guessing during the Jake Nava-directed "Shake It Off" as she costume-changes her way through a breakup that starts with her in the bath and ends when she drops her robe.

Carey reaches the realization she has to "shake you off" while lying in a bathtub overflowing with water and rose petals: "Just like the Calgon commercial/ I really gotta get up out of here." So she leaves a message for her lover while sitting on top of the dining room table, decked out in bright blue makeup and high heels: "By the time you get this message/ It's gonna be too late/ So don't bother paging me/ 'Cause I'll be on my way," she sings into the phone.

Still, her mind must not be that made up, because she manages to change yet again, before grabbing her bag and heading out the door as she sings, "So I packed up my Louis Vuitton/ Jumped in your ride and took off."

It takes her a bit to jump in that ride, because first she has to stroll down "Emancipation Street," where shops are called "So So Fetch" and "Pink Yet Lavender," and schoolgirls do a sort of shake dance at the pay phones. Jermaine Dupri, who produced the sparse, thumping, mid-tempo track, also pops up on a television screen and on street corners to give a little guidance, with suggestions like "Check this out" and "Bounce."

When Carey does get in the car, with a possible new love in tow, it's time to leave another message to remind her ex that she's found out about his cheating ways "with this one and that one/ By the pool, on the beach, in the streets." Her phone breaks up as she drives past the "Hollyhood" sign, so she tells him, "Hold on," singing, "Save this recording, because I'm never coming back home."

After performing the chorus in two more settings — the bleachers of a football game and a stage with her name in lights ("Mimi," that is) — Carey finally shakes off the song itself, lip-synching the second track where she does more of her vocal gymnastics, instead of the main melody.

She then slips out of her robe and walks into the sunset, with the glare obscuring whether she's wearing anything at this point. If this is her emancipation proclamation, perhaps it's something she should have done before the wedding in "We Belong Together."

— Jennifer Vineyard

  • Another review from Blog Critics states:
"The lush "Shake It Off" finds Carey head-bobbing and snapping with a wink. The name-dropping of products is used sparingly and not overdone. However, it's a so laid-back that it almost disappears."

"Shake It Off" Video Details and Download // 12:58 PM EST Updated by Liron

Shortly after its worldwide premiere, Mariah fans noticed the small details, hints and private jokes Mariah and director Jake Nava included in the video. Here are some of the cool bits that were picked up:

  • Cameo appearances include:
Producer Jermaine Dupri (on the street)
Actor Chris Tucker (in the car)
Rapper Da Brat (on the bleachers)
Mariah's cat Willy D (right after the bathtub scene)

  • Signs on stores and buildings that Mariah passes on the street include:
"Jack's Cafe" (reference to Mariah's dog Jack)
    "Shake It Off"
"Pink Yet Lavender" (reference to Mariah's interview with Lambs Radio - Read Transcript - January 30th, 2005 news)
"The Rarity" (reference to the E! Uncut special where Mariah's leg muscle was called "the rarity")
"So So Fetch" (reference to JD's label "So So Def" and 'fetch' from Mariah's favorite movie "Mean Girls")

  • Other signs in the video include "Hollyhood" (behind the car) and "Mimi" written in neon lights, like Mariah's famous 2003 Blender Cover.

  • More interpretations point out similarities of various shots to past Mariah videos:
"Breakdown" / "Boy" (big hair / make up scene)
    "Fantasy" (little girl dancing)
"Vision of Love" (microphone Mariah sings into at the end)
    "Crybaby" (bathtub with petals)
"Through The Rain" (same family in the video)

It seems the video is a homage to some fine moments in Mariah's career!

Mariah & No. 1: 'Together' Again // 12:14 PM EST Updated by Liron

  • Once again, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" sits on top of the Billboard Hot 100. The single has topped the chart for nine non-consecutive weeks, interrupted for one week for the chart-topping debut of Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven."

It also notches a 10th week on top of the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and its popularity is gaining in the newest media outlet for music: mobile phones. On Billboard's exclusive Hot Ringtones chart, the title dethrones 50 Cent's "Just a Lil Bit" after four weeks with a 4-1 jump.
But "Together" is showing some signs of slipping. It has not carried a bullet, signifying continued airplay and sales growth, since returning to No. 1 on the Hot 100 earlier this month. It also surrenders the top spot on the Pop 100 after three weeks in the lead to the Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" featuring Busta Rhymes, which springs 4-1.

Nonetheless, Carey's bid for summer listening! ubiquity is further expanded with "Shake It Off," which jumps 66-50 in its second week on the Hot 100. It also makes a 63-46 move on the Pop 100 and rises 54-42 on the R&B/Hip-Hop list.

  • Stronger 'Together': It turns out that "We Belong Together" (Island) isn't just a "comeback" for Mariah Carey, it's the second longest-running No. 1 of her career on the Billboard Hot 100. The title is runner-up only to "One Sweet Day," the single she recorded with Boyz II Men that set a rock-era record by remaining in pole position for 16 weeks.

Hitting the nine-week mark, "We Belong Together" surpasses the eight-week reigns of "Dreamlover" in 1993 and "Fantasy" in 1995. Thanks to "Together," Carey has now accumulated 70 weeks at No. 1, the second-highest total in the rock era.

Once comfortably ahead, Elvis Presley's total of 79 weeks seems vulnerable to a challenge from Carey next time she earns a No. 1 hit.

Weekly Soundscan Numbers For Mariah // 11:55 AM EST Updated by Liron

  • In its 15th chart week, "The Emancipation of Mimi" rises from #5 to #2 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart! The album sold 89,875 copies this week (10% decrease from last week) for a total of 2,603,195.

--From Billboard Daily News: The No. 1 bow for "NOW 19" ends the two-week reign of R. Kelly's "TP.3 Reloaded" (Jive), which falls to No. 3 on a 40% slide to 83,000. Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/Def Jam) climbs 5-2 despite a 10% dip to 90,000 and Coldplay's "X&Y" (Capitol) holds steady at No. 4 for a second week with 81,000 units (-18%).

--From Hits Daily Double: Mariah Carey continues to amaze. Island/IDJ’s diva comes in at #2 this week, up from last week’s #5, with 88k, while Jive/ZLG’s R. Kelly drops from #1 to a still respectable #3, with 84k sold.

  • "We Belong Together" drops 3 places to #11 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart. The single sold 21,670 digital downloads this week (13% decrease from last week, total downloads: 431,850.)

Mariah's competition, Rihanna's "Pon De Replay" sold 40,605 digital downloads this week. In order to remain atop the Hot 100 Singles chart, "We Belong Together's" airplay must be at least 38 million impressions higher than "Pon De Replay's". Due to Mariah's enormous airplay figures, she is expected to remain at #1!

According to Mediabase, "We Belong Together" has 241.695 million audience impressions with 24,239 spins.

  • From Ask Billboard: Imported Tastes

    Hi Keith,
I wanted to know if import singles sales at U.S. retailers have any impact on the Billboard Hot 100?

I buy import singles on a regular basis (due to the fact that the U.S. gets shafted on remixes, in my personal opinion) such as Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" and Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl." Do these get factored in as U.S. sales?

    Thanks! Dean

    Hi Dean,
Import singles are not counted towards any Billboard sales chart. Generally speaking, the units sold of import singles are so small, it really wouldn't make much of a difference. Additionally, the charts were always set up to reflect titles that were intended to be sold in the U.S. -- not imported titles that were purposely not released in America for whatever reasons.

--Two days ago, Sunday (July 24th) - Mariah arrived in Capri island in Italy for a vacation.

--Tune in to "Access Hollywood" tonight for a sneak preview of Mariah's new video "Shake It Off"!

--From an interview with Peter Rauhofer at Hour.ca:
Hour: Do you often re-record vocals in your remixes?

Rauhofer: It's very rare [today] that a singer wants to re-sing [a remix]. Most of the times I have to work with what I get. Artists are not involved in remixes unless they're Mariah Carey or Madonna.

--From Los Angeles Times: Nobody was allowed to engage in character assassination, but when it came to dishing about the career prospects of the artists who finished in the Top 10 — and those who didn't — our panel of executives didn't hold back.

    Mariah Carey
"She has made a remarkable comeback," an executive said, summarizing the feeling of many panel members. But he wasn't alone in adding, "Still, I don't think it's going to last."

Click here to read the rest of the article, which includes the names of the panel members.

--From USA Today: Edmée Daenen of D.H.T says she was influenced "by many different styles. I started singing after I bought a CD of Mariah Carey. And I grew up with Roxette. My parents were huge fans, so I was very excited when Flor decided that we should do Heart."

Official Press Release: Mariah Nabs VMA Nominations, New Video Premieres July 27th // 4:14 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah is nominated for 3 Teen Choice Awards, including Choice R&B Artist, Choice Love Song for We Belong Together, and Choice Hip-Hop song for It’s Like That.

THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI album crosses triple-platinum, 14th week in top 5.

With THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI crossing triple platinum, performer and songwriter Mariah Carey, who has been nominated for 2 MTV VMA awards for Best Female Music Video and Best R&B Music Video for the #1 hit We Belong Together, continues to make chart history this week. We Belong Together takes over the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100, Pop 100 Airplay, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Adult R&B (a career-first for Mariah), Rhythmic Top 40, and Mainstream Top 40 – and she becomes the first solo artist ever to top all eight charts concurrently, it was announced today by Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group.

While We Belong Together stays in its 8th (non-consecutive) week at #1 on the Hot 100 and 9th week on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles charts, Shake It Off is starting to bullet its way up the Monitors. The third single was #2 Most-Added at Pop radio last week, and #1 Greatest Gainer in audience and spins this week on the R&B/Hip-Hop Monitor, debuting at #52-bullet on the Airplay chart with a 25 million audience and over 3,600 spins. The video for Shake It Off, directed by Jake Nava, will enjoy its premiere on BET’s Access Granted, immediately followed by MTV and VH1 on Wednesday, July 27th.

THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI stays in the top 5 for a 14th consecutive week, after peaking at #1 twice, in April and again in June. Worldwide sales of the album have topped the 4 million mark.

Last month, Mariah became the first artist to break the 200 million one-week BDS Hot 100 audience barrier with We Belong Together (which went on to more than 212 million listens). We Belong Together, written by Mariah and co-produced by her with Jermaine Dupri, became the first song to top 1 million BDS spins in a week at Yahoo's LAUNCHcast online radio, and remained #1 on the AOL song charts for 10 straight weeks. Named the biggest single in the history of both Mariah and the Island Def Jam Music Group, We Belong Together, secured her place as the #1 most successful female artist of all time when it became her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Mariah as the only active artist with the potential to match or surpass the Beatles (with 20 #1’s) and Elvis Presley (18 #1’s) in the modern era. (With 69 total weeks of #1 hits since 1990, Mariah also ranks 2nd only to Elvis, with 80 weeks.)

  • On July 27th, at 7:30 PM EST: Head out to beautiful Los Angeles, and hang out with Mariah Carey. Mariah takes us behind the scenes of her latest video, "Shake It Off". After they wrap the production, BET will grant its viewers access to the world premiere of her video, "Shake It Off".

The show will repeat on Saturday, July 30th at 8:00pm EST.

Mariah Carey, proud of her most personal album // 12:19 PM EST Updated by Liron

The singer promotes the successful album "The Emancipation of Mimi" in Barcelona (Spain.)

Two days ago, Mariah Carey sang happily to freedom and to the sensation of feeling liberated during a press conference to promote her latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," a huge success in the United States. Of course she talked about freedom of creativity, but sometimes it seemed like she had suffered some oppression from the industry in the past.

To clear up some misconceptions, she admits that she's Mimi herself, in private. "That's the nickname my family and people who know and love me use." The emancipation, on the other hand, is related to the composition and album recording process. "This album reveals who I am, the other side that only my friends used to know, what's behind the wall. This album is not a Mariah Carey's, the star, album, but Mimi's."

Mimi, nevertheless, has some similarities with Mariah Carey. She doesn't care about watches, for example. She appeared one hour late to the press conference. And she likes daring clothes. She was wearing, in fact, a very short dress that showed a lot of cleavage. A proof of freedom.

But besides the clothes and the concept of freedom of creativity, the most important thing about this album is how good it's doing in sales. 3,000,000 copies sold in three months.

What's more, her single "We Belong Together" has become her 16th #1 in her career. Only The Beatles and Elvis Presley surpass her. "I'm very proud of it. This is something I never imagined. Anyway I want to make it clear that I don't want to put myself in the same category of Elvis and The Beatles. Not at all."

Mariah Carey talks quietly, as she was afraid of losing her voice. "My voice is my instrument," she says. Everything is going fine with her, however, she seems fragile, a person who needs to be surrounded by her two assistans and two bodyguards who always go with her. She decided to go with them to the Tibidabo theme park.

She seems to prefer to be calm and to get a balance in her life. She was asked if she felt like taking revenge now that she has come back to the top. "No," she replied. "I have always received bad criticism and a lot of bad things about me have been written. I understand that this is something that comes with success. I prefer to get a spiritual state of mind which helps me not to be affected by these negative comments."

"Now," she added with a smile, "I feel happy with my work and my personal life, while in the past my career was going pretty good but it was not the same with my life." She didn't mention it, but she might be talking about her marriage with Tommy Mottola, her rupture with the singer Luis Miguel or the suicide attempt the press talked about some years ago. The success of her latest album, the most personal, might have helped to the actual optimism of the diva. "In the past I had to sing my songs the way the producers wanted to. Sometimes I agreed, sometimes not. With this album I have felt free and I have enjoyed it more than ever. I have been able to express myself, be myself, and the fans have noticed. I think this is my best album so far."

Mariah Carey does her comeback with her most authentic album // 12:28 PM EST Updated by Liron

Barcelona, Spain. Excited people waiting expectantly, cameras... What was going on in the luxury Hotel Gran Florida yesterday evening? The answer: Mariah Carey was promoting her latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," in Spain. Prior to the press conference, some journalists got tired of waiting for the diva - who, as every celebrity, was late - and a group of fans that had won a contest made by the Mariah Carey fanclub to stay in such place, willing to wait for her as much as needed to see their idol. One hour later, Mariah appeared surrounded by several bodyguards. She was dressed in a spectacular tiny dress with such high heels that made her keep the attention while walking. Smiling and nice when being questioned, miss Carey made clear that "The Emancipation of Mimi" was her most authentic album. In fact, Mimi is the nickname used by her closest people.

To Carey, this album has been a liberation: "Nobody thought it was going to be so succesful as it is. I didn't feel any pressure when I was writing it". And that's why she thinks that "it's the best album I've made, the most sincere". She is the female artist with more #1 in charts history, behind Elvis Presley and The Beatles. She doesn't want to be compared to them, because "they are in another level." After a spectacular failure with the "Glitter" album which made her leave her last label, Virgin, Mariah Carey does her impressive comeback "without the intention of taking revenge, just being proud of my work".

Below are pictures taken yesterday during the presentation of "The Emancipation of Mimi" in Barcelona:

Atlanta Fan Gathering - Make Dreams Come True // 7:56 AM EST Updated by Liron

Coming up this month, fans in the Atlanta area are cooking up some big projects for MC. Our first one launches next weekend, and we need your help!

As fans know, Mariah Carey is one of the most charitable people of our time. That is why the Atlanta Lambs fan organization is asking fans from around the world to help in a new campaign to help make Atlanta’s children’s dreams come true. On the weekend of July 29, 30, and 31, every spin “Shake It Off” receives on a major Atlanta radio station (list TBA) will result in a $5 donation to the Atlanta chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation. So, if the song gets played 50 times that weekend, $250 will be donated on behalf of Mariah fans worldwide.

Spread the word. Tell as many fans and friends of possible – especially those living in the Atlanta area – to request “Shake It Off” on July 29, 30, and 31. Link them here.

Donate. To make this campaign a success, we need your help with donations. All donations will be kept in a fund and applied toward the campaign at the end of the weekend based on how many spins Shake It Off received. There are two ways you can donate for this project:

A direct monetary donation to the Atlanta Lambs (who will gather up all the funds at the end for a donation) . A donation of $5 will cover the cost of one spin, but all donations are welcomed. Send all donations to rpnatlanta@yahoo.com via PayPal. Your help is greatily appreciated!

Buy from the Atlanta Lambs store. The Atlanta Lambs store has tons of MC related merchandise for the fans – and all the profits from now until July 31 will benefit this project (after that, the proceeds go back to benefiting the Fresh Air Fund). The store can be found here.

Request. We need tons of requests on that weekend, so even if you don’t live in the Atlanta area, try and make one web request if possible. Information will be posted here for radio stations to request at, with phone numbers.

Also, the RPN Atlanta is having a fan gathering on August 20th, so if you're interested, check out Mariah Planet for more info.

  • From Billboard's Chart Beat: SENSE OF BELONGING: While Mariah Carey continues at No. 1 for an eighth week on the Billboard Hot 100, she also moves up to No. 1 on the Adult R&B chart with "We Belong Together" (Island). Carey also leads on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Rhythmic Top 40, the Pop 100, Pop 100 Airplay and the Mainstream Top 40 chart, the first song in history to lead all eight charts concurrently.

Jermaine Dupri Talks About Mariah // 7:55 AM EST Updated by Liron

  • The stars in Jermaine Dupri's universe couldn't look more spectacular these days. The producer's handiwork on Mariah Carey's latest album, including the Dupri-produced smash "We Belong Together," has played a key role in her stunning comeback. Dupri was also responsible for three of Usher's biggest hits last year, helping the R&B crooner make the leap to superstardom with the album "Confessions."

Dupri believes Jackson still has the potential to deliver another blockbuster album — even though at 39 she's competing against younger artists.

"People wanna always count older artists out, just because. Mariah Carey for an example ... (Janet) has sold so many more records than every other (new) artist. ... That's the way I look at it."

  • No wonder Atlanta's man in the spotlight, Jermaine Dupri, just opened a health-minded restaurant.

This is no time to be sluggish.

After all, this is the songwriter and producer industry people are patting on the back for reviving the career of pop superstar Mariah Carey.

He's the 32-year-old who's propelled Atlanta rapper-actor Bow Wow back into the "win" column after the relatively disappointing sales of the teen pin-up's last album.

Carey's and Wow's Dupri-produced singles "We Belong Together" and "Let Me Hold You," respectively, are Billboard's No. 1 and No. 2 R&B singles in the country this week. And that's the second time in two years Dupri's accomplished such a feat. (The first was with Usher's "Burn" and "Confessions.")

Q: Speaking of your record, be honest now: Wouldn't you rather see "Gotta Getcha" at No. 1 and Bow or Mariah at 17?

A: Oh yeah, if I saw that, that would be the ultimate.

Q: All right, let's get to the next high-profile project you're serving as executive producer on: Janet Jackson. What do you think happened to her last record, and how are you going to help her win this time?

A: Janet just needs to do what she's always done. Listen, I'm about to give you a secret to music right now: Half of the kids listening to music and buying music right now, they don't know anything. Like, half of the kids that are signed to So So Def now, they've never seen a Run-DMC concert, and they will never see a Run-DMC concert. That's why no rap shows are good these days, unless you go see Jay-Z or probably 50 Cent. These kids don't have the foundation. So all you've got to feed these kids is what's already happened.

So I'm saying with Janet, all Janet has to do is do what she does. But do what she did earlier.

    Q: Huh?

A: Like really come with the videos. Really come with the dancing. Cause nobody does it. Right now with these tours and these shows, like nobody who performed on the [recent] BET Awards had over three albums.

Q: Wait — Mariah was on there.

A: OK. Right. Career artist. And she strengthens my point: Everybody's looking at [her] like, "Yo, she came back!" She just did what she's always done. Already done. Always does. Have a good song. Sing the song. And do you. It's not really [appropriate to say] "JD, you're a lifesaver!" I mean, I might be being modest, but I don't look at it like that. I look at it like, I told her: "You're gonna make a real record. You're gonna sing the song full voice. And people are gonna love you." And that's what we did and it worked.

Mariah's 'Together' Holds Off 'Replay' Charge // 2:18 PM EST Updated by Liron

  • Despite the growing popularity of the debut single from newcomer Rihanna, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" sits on top of the Billboard Hot 100 again this week. The cut, which has held the post for eight non-consecutive weeks, also tops the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for an ninth and the Pop 100 for a third.

In addition, Carey has the Hot 100's top debut with "Shake It Off," which enters the chart at No. 66.

But making a serious bid for glory is Rihanna's "Pon de Replay," which makes a 5-2 move on the Hot 100 and advances 6-5 on the Pop 100. And while the cut is a ways off on the R&B/Hip-Hop tally, it bounds 66-33 there and is that chart's greatest airplay gainer.

On the Hot Digital Tracks list, "Pon de Replay" takes a three-position leap into the lead, bouncing Jessica Simpson's cover of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" to No. 2 after one week on top. On the Hot 100, "Boots" climbs 20-14.

  • As inescapable and buzzy as mosquitoes at a backyard barbecue, Pon De Replay is well on its way to becoming the summer song of 2005. A dizzying blend of reggae and R&B, it's spilling from car stereos and filling dance floors nationwide, and is comfortably ensconced in the top five of Billboard's singles chart. And it's making a star of Rihanna, a 17-year-old singer from Barbados...

Growing up, she idolized Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and especially Beyonce, who also happens to be Jay-Z's girlfriend. That's whose career she most wants to emulate.

Soundscan Figures & Chart News // 1:57 PM EST Updated by Liron

  • "The Emancipation of Mimi" drops one place from #4 to #5 in its 14th week on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The album sold 99,449 copies this week (14% decrease from last week) for a total of 2,513,320.

  • From Billboard Daily Music News: Coldplay's "X&Y" (Capitol) and Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/Def Jam) each slip one notch this week to No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Both sets come up shy of 100,000, with Coldplay (-21%) trumping Carey (-14%) by less than 300 units.

  • "We Belong Together" falls from #7 to #8 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart. It was downloaded 24,890 times this week (16% decrease from last week). Total downloads: 410,180.

"We Belong Together" is behind the #1 song (Rihanna - Pon De Replay) by 11,000 downloads. Thus, "We Belong Together" is expected to stay at #1 on the Hot 100 Singles chart for another week.

  • "We Belong Together" has been certified platinum in Australia which means more than 70,000 copies of the single have been sold in Australia!

    #8 - MTV Europe Top 20 (Last week: #11)

    #5 - MTV Asia Top 20 (Last week: #2)

'Get The UK Press Off Mariah's Back!' // 2:42 PM EST Updated by Liron

The following article was written by DJ Bigger on his column "The Bigger Issues" (page 44) on the July 19th - August 1st edition of the respectable UK magazine "Blues & Soul":

Question: what on earth has Mariah Carey got to do to get the sick UK gutter press off her back? I have just skimmed through about 12 tabloid newspapers (Sunday and weekday ones) looking for reviews of her Live8 performance and do you know what mention she gets? 'Her dress was too short', 'the dress looked two sizes too small', 'Mariah must have slimmed down to get into 'that' dress'.... how disgusting, when people are starving. It continues: 'she showed her true dive style by asking for a microphone stand' (how silly, a singer asking for a microphone stand).

Ermm, hello...what about her performance? Ermm, hello... how about the fact she wiped the floor with all the other performers?! This wasn't Mariah being anything other than the true meaning of the word 'diva'. A bloody awesome vocalist. She sang her heart out on "Make It Happen" (the perfect song for Live8), "Hero" and of course her monster hit "We Belong Together". This performance was nothing short of 10 out of 10!

When are the press going to give this f**king awesome talent a break?! The record buying public believe in her - look where they put "We Belong Together". And they are the people buying the newspapers. These journalists are playing a dodgy game. They're slagging off an artist, who their readers believe in. Hopefully this might be rectified in the none too distant future. Hopefully someone in the gutter press will actually write something remotely constructive about Mariah.

And here's a little footnote: this is how much a diva Mariah is... when most artists had drifted away, she stayed around for over fours hours to do the finale! That had nothing to do with wanting to increase album or single sales. Nothing to do with being a diva. Mariah did that because she felt it was right. How do I know? Because I know Mariah for what she really is - not for what the gutter press want us to believe!

    DJ Bigger.

The Top Women // 2:49 AM EST Updated by Liron

  • Keith,

Can you tell me who the top 10 best-selling female artists of all time, and how many records they have sold?

    Martin W. Quinlan

  • Hello Martin,

That's an easy enough question. I assume you mean solo female artists, right?

I can't use Nielsen SoundScan's figures for this list, as that company, which currently supplies the data that informs Billboard's sales charts, only began tabulating data in 1991. Thus, I am using the certification information from the Recording Industry Association of America (visit them at riaa.com). The organization bases its gold and platinum awards on the number of units shipped to retailers -- in the United States; there is no one firm that keeps track of worldwide sales.

As you can see from the list below, Barbra Streisand is out in front with more than 70 million units. She's followed by Mariah Carey, whose recent double-platinum certification of "The Emancipation of Mimi" pushes her ahead of Madonna.

Although, with Madonna, who is now No. 3, planning to release a new studio album later this year and Carey continuing to sell strongly, these numbers will most definitely change in a few months.

Here is the list of to top 10 female artists according to the RIAA:

    1. Barbra Streisand (70.5 million)
    2. Mariah Carey (63 million)
    3. Madonna (61 million)
    4. Whitney Houston (54 million)
    5. (tie) Celine Dion (47 million)
    (tie) Shania Twain (47 million)
    7. Reba McEntire (36.5 million)
    8. Britney Spears (31 million)
    9. Linda Ronstadt (30 million)
    10. Janet Jackson (25 million)

My, My, My, Mariah // 9:18 PM EST Updated by Will

Thanks to Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, we're blessed with an all-encompassing phrase for when good outfits go bad. After Jackson's breast escaped the constraints of her top during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, the offending display was blamed on a "wardrobe malfunction." The trusty two-word catchall is now part of the lexicon and has been applied to many mishaps since -- Tara Reid’s red-carpet display comes to mind. Well, the ol’ WM is back in the news and proving its staying power as a buzzin' phrase. Searches on "wardrobe malfunction" jumped 193% yesterday, and it's a subject that dudes love -- a whopping 90% of queries come from guys.

So why the renewed interest in the WM, you ask? Blame it on dizzy diva Mariah Carey. Searches on the buxom songbird jumped 42% after an onstage wardrobe malfunction in Germany bared her bosom for an instant. The double-digit increase was enough to push the already popular Carey into our top five searches. Those angling for a glimpse of Mariah's bounty spurred an enormous influx of Carey queries to our Video and Image Search sites, but we hate to disappoint -- there seem to be no legit shots of Mariah's malfunction. In unison, guys...awwwwwww.

While Photoshopping fiends created fakes aplenty, the lack of authentic images didn't stop our intrepid searchers (again, mosty males -- duh) and spawned an array of queries from those searching for indisputable visual evidence. Prudence prevents us from listing the bulk of Carey-related search terms that we uncovered, but we're sure you can figure most of them out.

Expert analysis: Mariah Carey // 7:38 AM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey must be feeling powerful these days. Glowing from the news that she's had 16 No. 1 hits, she selected a bold red gown for the MTV Video Music Awards.

We asked Diantha Harris, ASID, FSIA, IACT, of ChicagoHealers.com, if this is the color of success. Harris teaches about color for individuals for the Feng Shui Institute of America and the International Academy of Colour Therapeutics. She says:

"Mariah is obviously sure enough of herself to wear red. It takes a lot of self esteem, or chutzpah, to wear so much red. She may be trying to assert her power position in the entertainment industry. Or perhaps she is telling us she is a woman who lives passionately... surely her music carries passion with it! Red is a great attention-getter, and we know that celebs always want that. Our eyes are naturally drawn to red. But I would say it is not the best color for her skin and hair. I could see her in a copper shade, which would look better with her coloring. Also, it is more sophisticated than red, more mysterious, less 'noisy.' But then, perhaps this is the result she is looking for!"

Editor's Note: Although there have been speculations about Mariah's appearance on this year's Video Music Awards, the article most likely refers to the red dress Mariah wore at the MTV Movie Awards (June 2005).

The ever-busy Babyface is producing a Maurice Gibb tribute album that lists Paul McCartney, Jagged Edge, Sheryl Crow, the Black Eyed Peas and Rascal Flatts among its contributors. ("Even Snoop Dogg wants to come," he says.) He is also working with singers Musiq and Calvin Richardson on their new projects. But he feels there may be another Babyface record inside him. "It might be sooner this time; I'll cut it and see."

Meanwhile, he is not averse to being part of the "new" old school: Mariah Carey's No. 1 song "We Belong Together" samples his "Two Occasions."

"Mariah did me a huge favor," he says. "It's official now. Old school used to be Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass. Now 'new' old school is New Edition and Babyface. And that's a good thing."

Pal Calls Mariah An Ingrate // 8:17 AM EST Updated by Liron

An old friend of Mariah Carey feels she's owed some gratitude for kick-starting Carey's music career — and she wants everyone to know about it.
Brenda K. Starr, a dance-pop vocalist who employed Carey as a backup singer in the late 1980s, tells PAGE SIX in an extended rant that despite being responsible for hooking Carey up with powerhouse record producer (and ex-husband) Tommy Mottola back when she was still a nobody, Carey has seldom reciprocated.

"She's forgotten who she is and where she comes from, and she's never helped me the way I've helped her," says Grammy-nominated Starr, 39, who just released a salsa record, "I Dare You to Forget Me." "I've stopped talking to [Carey] because the only time she calls me is when she needs a favor."

Starr claims that she lost her own record contract with Mottola "to make room for Mariah. I never even got a finder's fee. I was left with nothing, resulting in me calling Mariah and saying, 'I need your help. I'm broke. I have two kids to feed, I can't get a record deal to save my life.' Her answer was, 'I really can't help you. I don't want to get involved.' "

Still, Starr says she was there to support Carey in 2001 when she had her much-publicized meltdown. "When she was breaking up with Tommy and when she was going through this nervous breakdown thing, I was the first to call her to ask her if she was OK."

Conceding that Carey loaned her $5,000 once to help "keep her house," Starr says her old pal "sends me a box of popcorn for holidays. I'm like, 'What? Does this girl think I'm hungry?' "

But Carey's manager, Benny Medina, counters: "Over the years, Mariah has generously provided thousands in loans, never seeking repayment, to Brenda and her family, as well as a variety of gifts to both her and her children. No request from Brenda has ever been denied by Mariah."

He also downplays Starr's role in kick-starting Carey's career. "Prior to signing with Sony, Mariah had a record deal in place with Warner Bros. Mariah has always, and will always, support and wish Brenda great luck and success."

But Starr isn't buying it. "Hopefully, one day she'll get off her high horse and realize who a real friend is, as opposed to all the moochers that go behind her back, suck up to her and take all her money."

Chart Beat: "Just Mariah This Time" // 2:54 PM EST Updated by Liron

  • I love your column and I look forward to reading it every week. As a longtime Mariah Carey fan I have been so happy to see her riding high on the charts again. Mariah received a great deal of attention when "We Belong Together" became her 16th No. 1 song. That got me wondering, which Mariah songs have had the most chart success? What are the top 10 Mariah songs based on the Hot 100? I look forward to seeing your Mariah countdown.

    Bill McDaniel
    Birmingham, Ala.

  • Dear Bill,

I didn't have to look very far to come up with your requested Mariah Carey countdown. In the response to the letter about Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Peter Waterman posted above, I mentioned my book, "Billboard's Hottest Hot 100 Hits." In the artists' section, I have text and a chart for Mariah Carey. Here is her top 10, based on performance on the Hot 100 (I've updated the chart through the current week):

    1. "One Sweet Day" (1995) [Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men]
    2. "Fantasy" (1995)
    3. "Dreamlover" (1993)
    4. "Always Be My Baby" (1996)
    5. "Hero" (1993)
    6. "We Belong Together" (2005)
    7. "I'll Be There" (1992)
    8. "Love Takes Time" (1990)
    9. "Vision of Love" (1990)
    10. "My All" (1998)

    Hello Fred!

I'm from the Philippines and work in a call center here. Most of the people I call and who call me back are from the United States (we're an outsourcing company), so I'm really into American entertainment and music.

I'd like to ask, between Mariah Carey and Madonna, who really has the most No. 1s both in singles and albums because it's confusing [when both] of them are called the "greatest female singer of all time" or "best selling female artist of all time."

I know Madonna's recent album was No. 1 but didn't reach gold or platinum status while Mariah's previous three albums before "The Emancipation of Mimi" were not No. 1 but were all certified platinum.

Anyway, its not about the sales but again, who among these fantastic females had the most No. 1s both on the singles and albums charts. Thank you.

    Neil Adrian

  • Dear Neil,

I receive a lot of e-mails about who is better, Madonna or Mariah Carey. Usually the letter-writers ask me to tell them who is the best-selling female artist of all time, or who is the greatest. Since those questions can't really be answered, I resist posting them here in Chart Beat Chat.

Since you asked a different question, and one that can be answered, your letter is appearing in this space this week. However, it is not an invitation to receive more e-mails on the Madonna vs. Mariah issue from other readers.

On the specific question of who has the most No. 1s, on the Hot 100 Mariah has 16. Only the Beatles (with 20) and Elvis Presley (with 17) have more. Madonna's most recent No. 1, "Music," was her 12th chart-topper. That ties her with the Supremes for fifth place on the list of artists with the most No. 1s. Michael Jackson is in fourth place with 13.

On The Billboard 200, Mariah Carey has five No. 1 albums, including her latest, "The Emancipation of Mimi." Madonna also has five. Her fifth No. 1 was "American Music," which was certified platinum shortly after release.

Mariah's Feature In "Para Todos" Magazine // 2:52 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey, the beautiful face from our PARA TODOS portal (April/May) released her most recent album including the #1 song, “We Belong Together”, which has become Billboard’s most successful song. With this song on board, Carey now has 16 number 1 hits in her career. The diva of Venezuelan decent is getting closer and closer to Elvis's record, which claims 18 number 1 hits, and closing the gap between the Beatles, who have the most number 1 hits, claiming 20. Without a doubt, the biggest return of the summer to the music and entertainment scene is Mariah Carey, who has already performed at the MTV Movie Awards and attended one of Oprah’s biggest parties.

“For the first time in my life I am really enjoying my career and success. I am here right now, in this moment. I attended Oprah’s tribute to the greatest women of color, and there I spoke with people like Leontyne Price, Tina Turner, and Diana Ross who made me reflect and take into account what I want, which is to persevere and persevere and never be afraid,” recently declared Mariah Carey.

Make sure to look for the new album, “The Emancipation of Mimi” which can already been found in stores.

Mariah Carey Denies She Cancelled Interviews // 3:11 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey has denied reports that she cancelled interviews on radio after she failed to reach number one on last weeks singles chart.

Radio DJs claimed that she agreed to do radio interviews after being confident that she will reach number one, but after losing out to 2Pac and Elton John she cancelled them.

A source at Britain's Radio 1 said: "We were told that Mariah couldn't appear because she had to have a vocal rest. Let's just say I've heard better excuses."

But Mariah's publicist said: "She couldn't be on British radio shows because she was in Germany."

Tivoli Concert: Photos & Review // 5:57 AM EST Updated by Liron

The following review was written by Kurt Bakkemoen for the Norwegian newspaper "VG". It was translated from Norwegian by Cathrine:

    Better On Record (3/6)
"Mariah Carey delivered an ordinary concert when she did one of her very rare concerts on PLÆNEN in Copenhagen's "Tivoli" Monday evening.

The concert became a fast thoroughfare of some of her hits. She is better on records. In just 1 hour, the concert with the world's most successful female artist of all time (along with her band, 4 dancers and 3 background singers) was over. The star had finished singing through 11 songs and 4 outfit changes, before she gave the audience "Vision Of Love" and "Without You" as extra songs.

It started uptempo with "It's Like That" and "Dreamlover". Mariah Carey has a very good voice, some say she possess a 7 octaves range, and her R&B/Soul music sounds good. Unfortunately she had problems connecting with the audience (including some hardcore Norwegian fans with their own posters!) The applause was polite but never hysterical. Most applause was given when Mariah said that Copenhagen was a beautiful but warm city. Mariah Carey seemed a little uncertain holding a concert. Only after a boring period, she managed to connect with her fans when she sung her 16th #1 hit in the US "We belong together". Only Elvis and the Beatles have more #1 hits than Mariah.

"We Belong Together" along with "Always Be My Baby" and "Vision Of Love" from her first album were the concert's climax. This Mariah Carey was O.K, but she is better on records."

FMQB's Buzz Bin Features "Shake It Off" // 6:44 PM EST Updated by Liron

MARIAH CAREY "Shake It Off" (Island/IDJMG)

It would be too easy to report that Mariah Carey’s recent "wardrobe malfunction" was timed perfectly with the release of her third single, but it is a good reason for MC to remain in the "Buzz Bin." We expect MC to "Shake It Off" so to speak, in no time, as her hit streak continues with 50 new stations on board. What Mariah has accomplished is pretty amazing as many had her written off as a non-factor in Pop music again let alone Rhythm/Crossover or Urban. She delivered an outstanding CD full of songs that connects with an audience across board leaving the critics to analyze how and why. Simple, when a talent such as Mariah Carey delivers songs that evoked emotion, passion, and even have a beat that anyone could groove to, it increases the chances that you’ll connect with fans of all ages. For as much as Jermaine Dupri helped Mariah find the way, it was her comfort level and maturity that has excited fans both old and new. However, according to actual video footage, pictures and the fans who attended the concert, the reports are false.

In reality, The strap in Mariah's dress tore once she finished singing "Vision of Love". Mariah jokingly told the audience: "Do you think this will cause a worldwide scandal?" She then turned to the side and showed the audience that she was holding her dress and nothing was revealed. Mariah then left the stage to return moments later with a new black dress!

Damizza Shares Story Behind Picture With Al Gore // 1:42 PM EST Updated by Liron

After receiving many inquiries about the matter, Damion "Damizza" Young has decided to share the story behind the picture to your right in which Al Gore, Mariah, Jerry Blair and Damizza himself pose together.

According to Damizza, the picture was taken not long before Mariah sang the American national anthem in front of millions of people during the Superbowl of 2001.

He adds that Mariah and him used to call each other "Al" [after Al Gore] because they were underdogs rooting for one. To his immense surprise, when Damizza bumped into Al Gore prior to the Superbowl, he found out that Gore was a fan of Mariah himself! Al Gore then gladly accepted Damizza's offer and went to Mariah's dressing room to meet her.

Passing the blame // 1:26 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey has finally given a reason that “Glitter” flopped: Sept. 11.

“I released it around September 11, 2001,” the singer told Swiss newspaper Sonntags Zeitung as translated on fan site MariahDaily. “The talk shows needed something to distract from 9/11. I became a punching bag. I was so successful that they tore me down because my album was at number 2 instead of number 1. The media was laughing at me and attacked me.”

The crooner also said that the flop was just too cutting-edge for it’s own good. “‘Glitter’ was ahead of its time,” she explained. “Today it’s ‘in’ to make 80’s music.”

Editor's Note: The above is the ultimate proof to how gossip columnists exaggerate and blow everything out of proportions. When asked about "Glitter", Mariah always discusses the misfortunate things that surrounded its release. Never did she blame anyone or anything in its commercial results.

Brenda K. Starr Takes Out Her Frustration On Mariah // 12:47 PM EST Updated by Liron

Brenda K. Starr who is mostly known for having Mariah Carey as a background singer in the 80s was a guest on the Wendy Williams show yesterday.

During the 20 minutes interview, Brenda spent most of the time bad-mouthing Mariah instead of promoting her own CD. Among other things, Brenda claimed Mariah ignored her and didn't keep her promises to her. Brenda must have never heard the song "Boy (I Need You)" because she decided "Mimi" is a fake nickname.

Is Brenda bitter, hurt, disappointed? Decide for yourself. Click here to download Brenda K. Starr's interview on the Wendy Williams radio show.

Jasmine's Juice // 6:21 PM EST Updated by Lynn

For Live 8, MTV had me working under overwrought but exciting circumstances in the director’s gallery cutting the show for MTV America’s transmission. It was 13 hours of being seated in the same seat in a dark, multi-screened room where my usual garrulous self was put to rest and I had a bird’s-eye view of the most exclusive footage of the biggest musical show in the world. Ever.

Most exciting was editing Mariah Carey’s performance set as I was really mixing business with pleasure and was proud of her. Before she went on stage she confided to me, “they love calling me a diva in your country so I’m going to be just that.”

She then she asked for her water person onstage and demanded a mic stand at the last minute – oh how we sniggered when the press responded as they always do. Pulll-eezzz!

Get a life peeps, at least she turned up in her free time and actually sang-in tune for y’all unlike Madonna who admittedly worked the crowd; but when she attempted those long high melodic notes I saw animals across the globe collapsing in shock.

What you didn’t see was the time and love-Mariah gave the 50 kids in the African choir backstage whose parents have all passed away from AIDS-related illnesses.

Snoop was hype and really was the only act to have the 200,000 strong crowd jumping and partying. (Everyone was bitchin’ ‘bout Paris Hilton who wouldn’t let fans take a pic with her – daft girl!) After the show we all had a private screening at MC’s penthouse suite at the Sanderson Hotel before collapsing exhausted at 6am.

The next day we both had call times at 8am for full days of press. During the afternoon I walked both Mariah (and her ultra opulent manager the infamous Benny Medina) across to Mr Jerks shop in Wardour St only for him to be shut! Our craving for West Indian food was rescued by my mate Ian Burrell who runs Cottons restaurant in Camden and couriered us over a carload of food so we were stuffed with plantain and jerk chicken for the next week! Thanks Ian – you swung it on home for our hungry bellies – you gangsta and we luv ya!

Mariah Has A 'Wardrobe Accident' // 12:27 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey gave fans more than they were expecting after a 'wardrobe accident' exposed her breasts.

But fans only managed a quick glimpse before organisers threw the power switch - plunging the stage into darkness.

According to MTV news, Carey then jokingly told the audience: "Someone bring me a jacket or the show's off, we all know how quickly these images can spread around the world."

Carey, who was performing in Karlsruhe, Germany, ran backstage under cover of darkness with her hands holding her clothing in place to have the problem fixed before continuing the concert.

"I Used To Be A Slave" // 5:50 PM EST Updated by Liron

The Swiss newspaper "SonntagsZeitung" published an interview with Mariah on today's edition. Below are the scans and the translation of the interview by Adi.

Mariah Carey about her crisis, her fights and her new super-hit in the USA

For the celebration there was a big cake. "Sweet Sixteen" was written on it with chocolate. The congratulations note was not for Mariah Carey's age (she's 35), but for her 16th number-one song in the USA, “We Belong Together”. Now there are only two left to surpass Elvis.

The diva, whose career offset seems to be over with the new album “The Emancipation of Mimi”, is the indisputable queen of the night. Not only because of her unique voice. In a miniskirt she met the SonntagsZeitung for a talk – shortly after midnight.

Mariah Carey, can I call you Mimi now?
    If you'd like to.

    Who is Mimi?
Mimi is my nickname that only family members and very, very close friends use. They don't use it today anymore. I am Mimi for people who know my other side. Not the celebrity, the public person, but the real human.

So Mariah Carey is not the real you?
It's strange. I don’t even know if I have a connection at all with the person Mariah Carey. My mum gave me the name Mariah Carey as a stage name because she thought I absolutely should become a singer, and I was barely. But all my friends only call me MC or Mimi and no one really calls me Mariah Carey. Really no one.

But if you want to distance yourself from the character Mariah Carey, why isn’t your album called “The Emancipation of Mariah Carey”?
With Mimi, I want to show my carefree and happy side to the world. The side you don’t know about Mariah Carey.

“The Emancipation of Mimi” doesn’t differ very much from your earlier records: It’s the usual mix of R’n’B, Pop and a bit of Hip Hop.
That’s not true. I’m showing a completely different side of myself, musically as well. While working on my new album, I pushed everything aside, what they think about me, I forgot all the pressure that was put on me and had the best time of my life. The result is showing the real me.

The term “Emancipation” is usually connected with women's fight for sexual equality. Can you identify yourself with that?
Yes. But emancipation means so much more. It's about every liberation from repression and control, and also about equal rights for minorities.

    Are you an emancipated woman?
Absolutely. I’ve appealed against many fights in my life. I had a white mother and a dark-skinned father, so I was a biracial child. We used to be poor, my parents divorced when I was 3 years old. We lived in a racist suburb, where mailboxes were flared and dogs were poisoned. That all gave me a feeling of inferiority. But that was also the grounding of my ambition: I was looking for fame because I felt inferior.

You became the most successful female singer of the 90s after being discovered by Tommy Mottola, the former head of Sony and married him in 1993.
Don’t talk about that. I married a man who was 20 years older than me and who controlled my career and my whole life. I had to free myself from that situation. I couldn’t even decide for myself what to wear.

After getting divorced in 1997 and leaving Sony later, your career surfaced an offset. You had a breakdown, there were rumours about checking in a clinic and suicide threats on your website. What really happened?
The truth is: Like every other human I have good and bad days. But when a star has a bad day, they have to appear on TV nonetheless. I used to be in that mill since I was 18. One day I couldn't anymore and wanted to rest. But they didn’t let me. I collapsed. Physically.

Did you think about quitting the business?
No. They say I had a breakdown, but for me it was a breakthrough because it allowed me to finally say no and to show the record company that I am not a slave.

You’re the biggest selling female in the world and you claim to be a slave. How does that go together?
From childhood onwards, I had low self-esteem. As I already said: biracial, poor. At 18, I got into a relationship with an older man. I got used to being controlled. I thought I had to obey. I just couldn't manage to say: I am tired, I'm going to get some sleep. Beyonce and Britney Spears at least have families who care for them and protect them.

With your movie “Glitter” you reached the low-point of your career. The “Glitter” album flopped. What went wrong?
“Glitter” was ahead of its time – today it’s 'in' to make 80’s music. But the timing was bad - I released it around September 11 2001. The talk shows needed something to distract from 9/11. I became a punching bag. I was so successful that they tore me down because my album was at number 2 instead of number 1. The media was laughing at me and attacked me.

With “We Belong Together” you have your first number-one song in five years. Are you relieved?
It's wonderful to have a hit again, and it's also the biggest radio hit ever in America. I really didn't expect that.

You’ve sold 230 Million records. Why are you producing more of them?
How can you ask that? My album shot to number one in its first week, faster than any of my earlier records in my whole career. Who would've thought?

You performed at Live 8 last weekend – surprisingly, because no one thought you were a politically committed singer.
I also didn't know if the audience would accept me. I thought they'd rather come to see 'Pink Floyd' and 'The Who' and not to hear such a schmaltzy ballad like “Hero”.

Do you believe in the effect of that event?
I performed with a chlidren's choir from Africa. Children, whose parents have died of AIDS. When I saw their ebullient faces I realized that we were about to make poverty history at that moment. “Make Poverty History” as it says.

Your new album ends with the words “Carry me home / Carry me higher, Lord”. Do you want to proselytize your fans?
No, I don’t want to impose my religion on anyone. I just want to share with others what helps me. It's a sad but spiritual song. The message is Psalm 30:5. There was one night in my life which I thought would never end. A terrible time and nobody told me something like that.

"We Belong Together" - #2 In Australia & The UK // 4:28 PM EST Updated by Liron

  • "We Belong Together" debuts at #2 on the official UK singles chart. The #1 single, "Ghetto Gospel" by 2Pac/Elton John has reportedly sold only 400 copies more than "We Belong Together".

It is likely that "We Belong Together", which was ahead in the physical single sales midweek updates, lost the #1 position due to low download figures.

"We Belong Together" is also #2 on the UK Airplay charts.

On the albums chart, "The Emancipation of Mimi" rises from #10 to #8.

  • In Australia, "We Belong Together" slips one spot to #2 in its 3rd chart week.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" climbs five spots to a new peak at #12! The album also climbs back one spot to its peak position on the Urban Top 40 Albums chart. Both the single and the album are certified gold.

Download Mariah's Interview On CD:UK // 8:20 AM EST Updated by Liron

While anticipating Mariah's official position on the UK charts, be sure to read and download Mariah's interview on CD:UK with Dave Berry, recorded last week and aired earlier today.

Click here to download the video file of the interview (AVI format, 25.2MB, 5:14 minutes) in which Mariah even arm-wrestles Dave. Download to find out who won!

Many thanks to DJ for the interview!

Below are excerpts from the interview:
    About Michael Jackson
D: Talking of great artists, I know a man you admire and many, many, many, people have for many years is Michael Jackson. And I just want to ask you: were you surprised as the rest of the world that he got off on an all charges. Or did you expected him to be found innocent?
M: You know what? I knew people who were around and involved in the case, and witnesses and stuff like that. And, because of what they told me, I felt that he deserved to be free. So, I’m glad for him, and I hope for the best for him.

About Paul McCartney & The Live 8 Concert
D: Okay. Well enough about the luckiest man in legal history. Lets move on to you… the most successful female artist of all time.
M: (Laughs) That’s just an amazing thing that I can’t really grasp. Because I really am still a fan of so many people - especially being there at Live 8 with… like, come on! Sir Paul McCartney!
    D: I know.
M: And there was a moment when ‘Hey Jude’ was happening, when he actually sang in my ear! He was, like: “Let me hear you sing!” That’s the only reason I sang!
    D: Wow.
M: ‘Cos my voice was tired, and I didn’t want to sing and I hate finales, because it’s always so awkward. And, having the kids there, was a great thing - they were inspiring me to stay there and I wanted to hear them sing. But he told me to sing! I’m like: “You gotta do it when he tells you to do it!”

    About Rumors Written In Tabloids
D: But, with your kind of success, and your kind of fame, and popularity, do you have bitchiness from people like Madonna and J-Lo? Does it go on at that kind of level as well?
M: (Laughs) Well, I mean, we all read the little things in the tabloids and whatever. I don’t know how much truth there is in any of them, you know what I mean? Because I know that so much of what’s written about me is not true so I can’t get mad and say, “So and so said such and such about me” Because I don’t know if it’s true if I didn’t hear it with my own ears.

--Reuters reports ailing music industry suffers rotten first half with album sales down 7.6%. So far this year only three albums have rung up more than 2 million sales. 50 Cent's "The Massacre" is the top-selling album, moving 4 million copies. Mariah Carey holds down the No. 2 slot with 2.3 million scans of "The Emancipation of Mimi." The Game's "The Documentary" is No. 3 with 2.1 million units. Universal Music Group, home to 50 Cent, Carey and The Game, is the only major company enjoying an uptick in sales this year.

--Star magazine is reporting that "If American Idol judge Paula Abdul leaves the hit show to become a judge on Fox's dance contest spin-off, So You Think You Can Dance, Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston may take her place. Network spies say both stars have been approached about appearing in the show's fifth season, with Whitney as the producers' first choice."

--From New York Daily News: How many situps does it take to get a sexy six-pack like the one Mariah Carey showed off during Macy's fireworks on Monday? None! Mariah's rep claims the songbird's new chiseled torso is the result of "eating right and working out 3 hours a day with her personal trainer," but I just scooted uptown to Faux Glow on Madison Ave. and got myself some insta-abs.

--"Banding Together" for Mariah and Save The Music project is having a Summer Sale on bracelets - if you buy one, you get the second one free! Coming off her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single in five years, Mariah Carey wastes no time in issuing "Shake It Off." The bouncy midtempo single finds the resuscitated diva dumping her disrespectful, cheating man while name-checking Louis Vuitton and Calgon. The tune is straightforward and simple - and the sparse thumping beat wisely doesn't distract from Carey's unmistakable vocals. At one point, she simply kisses off her ex with a voice mail: "Save this recording because I'm never comin' back home, baby I'm gone." After "We Belong Together" brought her back to radio big time, "Shake It Off" will take Carey's good fortune to the next step. - Keith Caulfield

Carey Struck By Stone's Confidence // 3:18 PM EST Updated by Liron

Pop beauty MARIAH CAREY was amazed by the way young soul star JOSS STONE confidently mixed with global superstars backstage at last week's (02 JULY 05) Live 8 gig in London.

The HONEY singer recalled when she was the same stage as 18-year-old Stone, it was a different story, as she couldn't even get close to her idols.

She says, "I was struck how she was mingling with all the other singers.

"When I started out, the same age as her, I never got to meet any famous artists.

"I wasn't allowed to. It was bleak."

Mariah's back in a big way // 12:33 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Reversing the trajectory of 15 No. 1 pop hits, the back-to-back bombs of 2001's Glitter and 2002's Charmbracelet sent Mariah Carey's meteoric career into a deep crater.

The singer has not only climbed out, but she also has climbed up to her '90s peaks.

We Belong Together, Carey's 16th No. 1, reached record-setting radio audiences and is atop Nielsen BDS' national airplay chart for the eighth week. It's driving sales of The Emancipation of Mimi, No. 4 in Billboard after selling 2.3 million copies since April 12.

That's quite a rise from the Glitter gutter. The panned soundtrack sold 605,000 copies, piddling compared with 7.1 million for 1993's Music Box or 7.5 million for 1995's Daydream, according to Nielsen SoundScan. After Glitter tanked, EMI bought out Carey's contract, a lucrative but humiliating episode that further dimmed her star power.

Carey's remarkable rebound "is Houdini-like," says Joe Levy, Rolling Stone deputy managing editor. "It's rare enough to have a career that lasts 10 years in pop music, but once you've reached your peak, it's virtually impossible to get it back ... even without such a spectacular failure."

The turnaround mostly is a result of the '70s and '80s soul and disco on Mimi, "a stronger, looser and more musical record than she's made in a very long time," Levy says. Crucial is its adult tone, achieved "by being musically substantial rather than dull or sappy."

Carey's revival also might owe to ducking the spotlight long enough to let flops fade and erase flashbacks of that infamous MTV striptease.

"She was smart and went away for just the right period," says Zena Burns, Teen People's music editor. "She went to Capri and got her head together and got some peace.

"She's made classic songs that are part of the soundtrack of people's lives, so the public really wanted to welcome Mariah back. She did dig a deep hole. But Mariah is a survivor. Besides, the public forgives."

And it forgets. New fans "don't have to forgive Glitter," Levy says. "They didn't live through it."

Mariah Interviewed At "Gottschalk & Friends" In Germany // 10:18 AM EST Updated by Liron

Last night, Mariah appeared on the live German talk show "Gottschalk & Friends". Unfortunately, another guest on the all-German panel was a 'comedian' named Oliver Pocher. During the interview, Mariah was constantly interrupted by Pocher who insulted her in German. At one point, Mariah had commented that he was being unfair and asked him how would he feel if he were in a panel with her and her friends speaking in American slang. Thomas Gottschalk, the host of this show and of the show "Wetten Dass" in which Mariah had appeared many times seemed to be unable to control his guest.

We urge fans who have seen the show to express their dismay at the display of disrespect towards Mariah on the show by e-mailing:
  • Oliver Pocher - The 'comedian'.
  • Thomas Gottschalk - The host (Please put: "C/O Thomas Gottschalk" in the subject)

Thanks to Gilles for the e-mail addresses.

Below are screen captures and pictures from the show. Check back here later for video files from the show as well.

Download Mariah's Interview With Scott Mills // 5:57 PM EST Updated by Liron

Today, BBC Radio 1 aired the interview Mariah gave Scott Mills yesterday prior to leaving England. Mariah talked about Live 8 and dispelled some ridiculous rumors. Scott has also given Mariah the "Star Phone" which you can read about in the article below:

Mariah has the R1 Star Phone

Mariah Carey came in on the show this morning and proved she wasn't a huge diva - she denied that she demands red carpets and candles when she arrives at a hotel, which was frankly disappointing. She also used the Radio 1 toilet even after Chappers had been in there with his upset tummy!

And Mariah also agreed to be the first person to have the Radio 1 Star Phone.

    Here's how it works:

  • We give a celebrity our Radio 1 Star Phone
  • They agree they'll answer it whenever we call them up
  • They must pass it on to the next celebrity they meet

We'll keep calling up the phone this week - it could be Mariah, it could be Snoop or Jay-Z who answers. Stay listening to find out.

Q&A: Mariah Carey // 5:36 PM EST Updated by Liron

What is actually on your rider? Would you ever want to get married again? And do you do stairs?

Mariah Carey was born in Long Island, New York, on March 27, 1970. She moved to New York City at the age of 17, just one day after graduating from high school, to pursue a music career. She rose to stardom on the strength of a voice that has earned her frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. Her success comes after a dramatic few years: she separated from her husband Tommy Mottola in 1997 and had a nervous breakdown in 2000. Her new album, The Emancipation of Mimi, recently debuted at No 1 in the US.

You write most of your own songs, what inspires you?

It depends. Tonight I was in a rare moment by myself and a melody and lyrics came to me - and I did not have my tape recorder right there so I had to run around and look for it. That was more of a gospel inspiration song, and that happens a lot with those type of songs. The melodies amaze me because they really are gifts from God, they just come to you out of nowhere.

What's it like to work with Snoop Dogg?

I love working with Snoop, this is the second time - technically the third, because we did a video together once for my song "Heartbreaker". Then we did "Crybaby" together, on my album Rainbow, which was out in 1999. That was one of my favourite songs off that record but at that point the record company did not understand that we had Snoop on the record, and that people love him. They still thought hip-hop was something new and I hated to break the news that it had been around for 25 years.

Which contemporary artists do you listen to?

There is a gospel singer named Kierra Sheard, Kiki they call her, she is Karen Clark Sheard's daughter. The Clark sisters are my favourite gospel group. She is 16 years old and has been singing with her mother over the years, and I have been just waiting for her to put an album out, which she did this year, and it is great. I listen to the radio a lot, I have always been a radio junkie. I work with Jermaine Dupri a lot and I like his work.

You reinvent yourself a lot. Which Mariah do you like best?

That is a hard question, because wearing my hair differently or changing my style of dress is all a kind of playing dress-up - I don't take it too seriously. I do not think I reinvent myself. I never wear flat shoes because, since I was little, I walked on tippy-toes. I do not know why, it's something my friends make fun of, but the Mariah that stays constant is the one wearing high-heel shoes even if I am barefoot.

As the 90s' top-selling artist, what do you hope to remember about this decade now?

I am sure, in a lot of ways, it is going to be a blur. I have gone through it without actually experiencing most of it, or taking it in. However, "We Belong Together" is my biggest song ever, something I never expected. So I am taking it in now, and it is more tangible. At the beginning of this decade, nothing seemed real.

Much has been made of your diva demands, but what is your actual rider?

I have no idea. I think most of the demands on it come from the people that work for me. I honestly do not know what the rider is. Whatever it is, it needs to be changed and updated because it is from about 1901.

Does celebrity life inevitably take a toll on your health?

I think it does. There are the few people who are fortunate enough to come from really good families, who have support systems for them, and then there is pretty much everyone else, who has been burnt by someone along the way. Most of us did not start out with money. I know what it is like to struggle. I have friends that I have been friends with since I was 15, so that stuff is all the same.

Does Mariah still not do stairs?

Yeah. Right. Actually, I am the opposite. I've been stuck in elevators in Germany, in Japan and in my own apartment close to where the World Trade Center used to be, so I hate elevators. All the time I'm saying, can we not take the stairs? I'm always about stairs, even if I am wearing heels.

Your new album is about 'The Emancipation of Mimi', but who is Mimi and how is she different from Mariah?

She's just a nickname. My mother named me Mariah Carey because she did not want me to have a nickname; and now, here I am, with a nickname that people all over the world have started using.

You've got a seven-octave range. Does that mean you could sing bass in a barber-shop quartet?

If everyone else's voice was really high. The tenor would have to be a high tenor. But on no sleep, the low end of my voice is the stronger. I just sing whatever I feel like and experiment with my voice, but I think that seven octaves is an impossible thing.

Is it true that you're planning to write children's books? What will they be about?

There was a book idea that was brought to me by another woman who is also biracial. She is very ambiguous looking, as am I, and we went through similar things growing up. Now she is married to an African-American and her kids are going through the same stuff. She brought an idea called Little Mariah's First Day at School, and though I loved the concept, the title needed changing. I wanted it to be more broad, and I was cautious not to jump on the bandwagon of "lets do a children's book". This is something that I think kids of mixed race could really use.

What was it like for you starting out and what advice would you give a struggling singer?

I always had an enormous amount of drive, and was very focused on what my goals were, and I love music. So my advice to anyone who wants to get into this business is really love it; it can be very difficult, but it is also an enormous blessing, an incredible gift.

After your very public divorce in 1997, would you ever want to get married again?

Only if it was the absolute right situation because I have a lot of guilt about the fact that I got married and divorced. I said to myself as a child I would never get married because my parents got divorced when I was three.

Should there be more whistling solos, like yours, in pop music?

I am not actually whistling, I am using my throat. But I am a very good whistler. My mother taught me to sing, my father taught me to whistle.

Who is harder to work with, Whitney Houston or Bone Thugs-N-Harmony?

I got along very well with Whitney. I do have a great time doing my hip-hop collaborations because it is very close to my heart.

Was your mixed-race background a disadvantage in the music industry? Have attitudes changed now?

I think attitudes have changed. Internally, my whole life it has been something I have struggled with. I think people have wanted to put me in some sort of a box so they can understand who I am. It is not easy for people to look at someone and think: her father's black, her mother's white, she does not look like either of them.

Where do you call home, and what's it like?

Basically, it is underwater, my apartment. The water tower broke on the roof. The roof is part of my area, it was my dream to have a penthouse in Manhattan. They have been working on it now for quite some time.

With your voice, did you ever consider a career in opera?

No, because I realised how much skill, technique and studying that requires. I greatly admire opera singers of talent, but I am not disciplined enough.

Who are the most important people in your life?

Personal friends who have been with me through everything I have gone through in my life and remained there.

How would you like to be remembered?

I do not think I could control that. I would hope there has been some part of the contribution made musically, and that is all I can hope for.

Why do you still desire emancipation seven years and four albums after your divorce?

When you go through something as intense as what I went through in that relationship it requires a very long period of healing.

Mariah Carey's new single, "We Belong Together", is out now.

Live 8 - Mariah Gets The Last Laugh // 1:42 PM EST Updated by Liron

So much more to report from the London Live 8 concert, both from backstage and all around.

But the big question remains: What happened to Mick Jagger?

He was supposed to appear at the end of the show with Paul McCartney. But Jagger was a complete no-show, never setting foot in Hyde Park.

In any case, I'm told he was very amused by the goings-on in his first-class cabin concerning our very own Mariah Carey.

Now, mind you, at Live 8 I had an extremely pleasant time with Carey in her dressing-room area, where she entertained fans seeking autographs, as well as Snoop Dogg and the legendary Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band.

She also played hostess to Bob Geldof, who stopped in to thank her for coming such a long distance. (Carey had a July 4th gig in the U.S. that she couldn't miss, which meant an instant turnaround.)

Here's the thing about Mariah: She is a diva, and she doesn't even know it.

While I sat with her, she sent back her spaghetti-and-meat-sauce dinner three times — because it had cheese on it.

It's not like she's allergic to cheese, either. It's that she could smell that the grated parmesan came from a jar and wasn't fresh. ("It's a thing I've had since fourth grade," she said.) It was kind of hilarious.

On the other hand, Mariah's performance at Live 8 was, I thought, spectacular. And by the way, did you notice that Randy Jackson of "American Idol" fame, her longtime producer, was her bandleader for the night?

On "Hero," Mariah went into what I would call a triple lutz, a complicated, fluttering note that sent goosebumps into the audience. The British fans loved her, no matter what their critics say. I was standing in the middle of a crowd, including Oscar-winning actress Faye Dunaway, that could not get enough of her.

But Mariah is Mariah. She was supposed to sing "Vision of Love," not "Hero," but changed her mind at the last minute.

The reason? She told me she wanted to accommodate the African Children's Choir, and with "Hero" they could get more singing time.

And Carey — unlike Madonna and many other stars — stuck around and participated in the big finale. She gets credit for that in abundance.

But I digress. Back on the flight, where Mick was furiously word-processing, Carey — my spies reveal — did not like the placement of her first-class seat.

She felt on inspection that Jeff Kwatinetz, owner of the Hollywood management company The Firm, had the better set-up. So she politely asked if she could change with him.

Kwatinetz was sitting with his colleague, Peter Katsis, who complied with Carey. That left the singer sitting with Kwatinetz for six hours, while her own manager — the incomparable Benny Medina — was left to his own devices.

Making Mariah's presence in the first-class section even more interesting was her personal entourage, who apparently did not leave her unattended for a minute of the six-hour flight.

"Even Mick looked a little shocked that there was always a circle of people around Mariah," my spy observed. A circle — and a cloud of powder.

Mariah, meantime, gets the last laugh. She has the No. 1 album of the summer, two hit singles (and maybe two or three more to come) and can look forward to a passel of Grammy nominations and lots of other less reputable but highly publicize-able awards when the fall season kicks in.

She's off to the island of Capri for part of the summer, but not before Island/DefJam's L.A. Reid charters a yacht for her, Medina, their gang and his family to float around the Mediterranean and celebrate "The Emancipation of Mimi."

I just hope Benny checks later to make the boat isn't charged against the album. And that Jeff Kwatinetz isn't one of the waiters.

Mariah – 'Snoop Rocked Live 8'

Mariah Carey says that Snoop Dog was her favourite performer at Live 8 this weekend.

Speaking as a guest on today's TRL, the mightily chested superstar vocalist who herself performed at Live 8, reflected upon the gigantic concert and singled out Snoop as her highlight. "I enjoyed everybody," Mariah told Dave, looking resplendent in a shiny blue dress (Mariah, not Dave). "There were huge legends there that I was just honoured to be sharing a space with."

"Personally though, Snoop was one of my favourites. I love Snoop."

Commenting on her own performance, Mariah added: "I was so honoured to be there. I didn't go to the soundcheck the day before cos I needed to rest my voice and I'm glad cos I think it would have made me freak out even more about how huge it was.

    "It was a real honour."

Live 8 watched by 9.6 million in the UK as sales rocket // 5:55 PM EST Updated by Liron

The impact of the Live 8 concert is already being felt on the high street, 48 hours after the concert in Hyde Park.

HMV announced a massive increase in featured artists’ album sales and AOL, which showed the event on the internet, claimed that it had broken the record for the number of people simultaneously viewing video online.

But not everyone had good news. The BBC announced peak viewing figures of just 9.6 million, and admitted that it had received a flurry of complaints about broadcasting swearing before the 9pm watershed.

Pink Floyd have seen their album sales rocket 13-fold, after being reunited on stage for the first time in more than 20 years. Fans have flocked to record stores to buy copies of the band’s greatest hits album. Sales of Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd are up 1,343 per cent at HMV.

The Who and Annie Lennox also registered massive increases, and with the exception of Pete Doherty – whose performance with Elton John was not well received – all the artists who performed have benefited from the publicity.

HMV compared sales at its 200 stores yesterday with the previous Sunday. Spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: “This snapshot shows that Live 8 is having a marked effect on sales - just like its predecessor 20 years ago. Iconic acts like Pink Floyd and The Who have done particularly well. It shows that when acts like these perform, it reminds everybody how fantastic they are and people flock to buy the records that perhaps they never got around to buying when they first came out.”

Another beneficiary of the Live 8 effect was the internet company AOL, which sponsored of the event. Broadcasting all the concerts simultaneously, it allowed its users to pick which bits of which concerts they watched, keeping them informed what was coming next with alert messages. It claims to have set a record as 150,000 people simultaneously viewed video streams.

Viewing figures for the television broadcast peaked at 9.6 million, with a disappointing average audience of 6.6 million. This figure is considerably less than for key sporting events, such as this year's most popular broadcast, Liverpool’s Champions League Final victory, which had 13.9 million viewers at its peak. The first episode of the new series of Dr Who was also more successful, attracting over 10 million viewers.

The BBC also received nearly 400 complaints from viewers about bad language before the watershed at 9pm. High profile culprits included Madonna, Johnny Borrell from Razorlight and Snoop Dogg.

Sales increase at HMV between Sunday June 26 and Sunday July 3:

1 Pink Floyd - Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd - 1,343%
    2 The Who - Then and Now - 863%

Mariah Carey: Back On Top - And Now She's Calling The Tune // 5:13 AM EST Updated by Lynn

From the July 3, 2005 issue of UK's Sunday Express magazine, "S".

    Viva La Diva
The dictionary definition of the word diva is "a very successful and famous female singer". Mariah Carey is certainly that. In fact, she's the biggest female artist of all time, with a tally of number one hits rivalled only by Elvis and The Beatles. Her glass-shattering voice is not to everyone's taste (Cameron Diaz once said: "If you really want to torture me, sit me in a room strapped to a chair and put Mariah Carey on, over and over again.") But no one can deny that it's an extraordinary gift.

When the word diva is applied to Miss Carey, however, it refers to more than just her vocal abilities. To put it tactfully, she has a reputation for being one of the most high-maintenance artists around. She is never without an enormous entourage, and red carpets are reportedly rolled out the moment she decides to leave the house. She once allegedly asked for puppies to be provided backstage, as their presence would calm her nerves. And, most famously, Miss Carey doesn't "do" stairs.

Our interview, therefore, is something of a surprise. For a start she turns up early - most un-diva-like behaviour - and then apologises for her timekeeping. Could this be the same Mariah Carey who supposedly throws a strop if her hotel room isn't painted a particular shade of pink? Clearly not, as she quickly assures me that her life is not as glamorous as people think. She sometimes buys her own groceries, she says, and likes to escape from her entourage just to be "normal".

But she doesn't mind being called a diva. "Everyone's a diva these days. You don't even have to be a singer. If a woman opens a foodstore she's the Deli Diva. Some people use it to mean a bitch or whatever but I grew up with a mother who was an opera singer and it was used all the time in another context. "

She's a sweet girl (definitely not a woman, even though she's 35) and seems more able to laugh at herself than your average Stateside celebrity. Every now and again she does a sort of camp 1920s accent, peppering her sentences with "daahhling" and "my dear" in her naturally smoky voice.

When I ask about the red carpet demands, she jokes that she walks on red carpet in her own apartment "and people throw petals in front of me at the same time". As for the stairs: "It's, like, totally the opposite. I don't even like taking the elevator. I've stayed in so many different places all over the world and I've been in too many that break down so I prefer stairs. My security will be panting after I've made them walk eight flights."

But for all Miss Carey's efforts to sound like the girl next door, she acts like royalty and she knows it. Before our interview Mariah was working out with her personal trainer, whom she flew over from the Caribbean. "My trainer is French and she lives in St. Barts," she says. "My friends are like, 'Only you would import someone from St. Barts to come to New York or LA.' But I say, 'Well, I can't be spending all my time in St. Barts. I mean, I'll never get any work done.'"

It's difficult to begrudge Mariah the perks of fame. After all, she hardly had the best start in life. Her father left the family home when she was three years old, and she spent a poor and unhappy childhood on Long Island, New York. As a mixed race child, she felt she could never be part of the gang with her black or her white peers. She had an older brother with cerebral palsy and a troubled gymslip-mum sister who contracted HIV. Her maternal grandparents, who were white, were not best pleased by Mariah's mother's choice of a black husband and ostracised the family.

None of this stopped Mariah - or more to the point her mother - from having big ideas. This girl was born to be a princess. "My mother named me Mariah Carey as a stage name," she says. "She felt this was what I was going to do."

Mariah's voice was her passport from poverty and misery - and it has delivered on the former, if not the latter. "My voice was my secret. That was my thing," she says. "Whatever the problems were, I always knew I had that. I don't know what my self esteem would have been like without it."

Pretty low, presumably, since Mariah still feels like an outsider even today. "I'm still the same girl who came from a meagre upbringing and a pretty difficult childhood and with an inferiority complex. But the fact that I'm able to live my dream is an enormous gift. "

The man credited with making Mariah's dream come true is Tommy Mottola, formerly chairman of Sony Records and one of the most powerful men in the music industry. When, at 18, Mariah met him, he must have seemed like a godsend. Not only did he want to make her a star, he wanted to marry her, too.

The couple had a lavish wedding (the dress had a 27ft-train) and an even more extravagant lifestyle. Their house had two swimming pools, twelve bedrooms, a recording studio and a heli-pad.

Mariah's career took off, on the back of hugely successful ballads and belters such as Hero and Dream Lover. There was, however, a price for this fairytale. She claims that Mottola, 20 years her senior, was obsessive and controlling. He wanted to engineer every aspect of her life. She says he would call her to check up on her. She wasn't allowed to look or sound "too black" and she was told to dress demurely.

The marriage, predictably, didn't last. And after it ended, Mariah's career also seemed to hit the buffers. Sony lost interest in her, she signed a new deal with Virgin, but was then paid to leave. She attempted a film career, starring in a total turkey called Glitter. Then there were rumours of a breakdown and her reputation as a bonkers, demanding diva was sealed.

But you can't keep this girl down, and Mariah's latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi (that's her nickname, by the way) is a spectacular return to form. Both the album and the single We Belong Together have reached number one in America. And this, she believes, is her greatest achievement yet. "It's the first time I've had this experience and actually been able to enjoy it. It's something that I've done on my own."

The album title is well chosen. In the videos and publicity photos she's wearing a slinky, black Dsquared dress revealing acres of golden flesh - a far cry from the wholesome image Mottola tried to create for her. "In the beginning, I was pretty much told what to wear," she says. "It was even drummed into me that I only looked good from one side and with my hair a certain way. So just having a shot facing the camera is a big deal."

These days she's more famous for her spaghetti-strap vests, and micro hot pants teamed with heels and a jaunty baseball cap. "Initially that was rebelling, but I have more confidence now," she says. And yesterday the seal was set on her comeback when she played at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park. "I was thrilled and honoured when Sir Bob Geldof asked me to take part in this historic event," she says.

Like many American A-listers, Mariah speaks the language of the therapist's chair. But she says it's her faith in God that has pulled her through. "I truly believe that everything I have is a gift from God and everything happens for a reason. I had to go through a lot of things to get to this place - the best I've felt in my life emotionally and creatively."

Those "things" don't, she says, include a breakdown. "That was something that was so highly sensationalised in the media. I remember sitting with some friends on a boat in Puerto Rico while newspapers were saying I was in a hospital somewhere. That was the first time I felt famous - I had the press camping outside my home and photographing me in my pajamas. But it's part of the package - you have to take the rough with the smooth."

That doesn't mean she's happy to reveal her secrets. A three-year, on-off relationship with Latin singer Luis Miguel, 34, ended early this year, so I ask who she's dating now. "Daahling, I'm married to my music," she says, huskily.

That's a joke, of course, but there's no doubt she loves being a very famous and very successful singer. Mariah Carey is a diva in every sense of the word - but when you've sold 160 million albums, aren't you allowed to be?

The single We Belong Together is out tomorrow.

BBC Radio 2 Interviews Mariah // 8:03 AM EST Updated by Lynn

BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans caught up with Mariah Carey for an interview backstage at London's Live 8 show yesterday, July 2nd. Following are excerpts from the interview:

Mariah Carey: You know so many people from America, so many of my friends like just got on planes just to come and see Pink Floyd and see The Who and just, I mean ... are like freaking out. People don't get on planes from America like anymore like that. So this is of huge, huge, huge deal to the world so it's amazing.

Chris Evans: Does Mariah Carey get nervous at things like this?
MC: I was pretty nervous for one but you know I think it was cool because you're close to the people, you know what I mean? Even though I was I don't know like how this is gonna go over with me with this crowd that's really here to see The Who, and to see Pink Floyd and to see all the you know, great rock legends and stuff like that so I felt good up there because it's so nice to see people singing my new song which is like 'ohh, they know this, okay that's cool' and then you know just to be there with the choir, the African Kids' Choir was a great moment for me.

CE: I thought they were your children.
MC: Yeah...yes, they are my children as well. No, just kidding. But seriously, they do represent 11 million orphaned children in Africa who you know they're survivors. All their parents had died of AIDS, and yeah they're survivors and they're doing this thing. And the people who support them and brought them into this choir are just like an amazing thing for them. So I'm happy they're part of the show tonight.

CE: Now what time were you told you were gonna be on?
MC: Oh I have no idea. I just show up whenever they say. Everybody lies to me everytime anyway 'cause they know I'm gonna be late. (laughs)

Chart News & News Tidbits // 6:27 AM EST Updated by Liron

  • From Chart Beat Chat: How Much "Heaven"?

    -Hello Fred,

I have followed your column and Billboard charts for years and have [watched] three "American Idol" winners debut at No. 1. My question to you is how many singles does someone have to sell in order to knock a song ("We Belong Together") out of the top spot when the airplay of that single is somewhere near 200 million listeners? How are sales calculated over the airplay? I would think that a single that has that many listeners would fare better than a single that sells maybe 100,000-200,000 singles.

Thanks for listening, love this column

    Jamal Cannady
    Baltimore, Md.

    -Dear Jamal,

There's no one sales figure I can give you, as every week the chart positions are relative to each other, not a constant number. Carrie Underwood had a tougher assignment than most, since the airplay figures on "We Belong Together" are record-setting. It was reported that Carrie's "Inside Your Heaven" sold 130,000 commercial singles in the United States. Add in her paid digital download sales and airplay (which is minimal), and her total combined sales and airplay was enough to put her on top.

This week, Carrie's sales declined, driving down her single 3-1 on the Hot 100, while Bo Bice debuted at No. 2 with his take on "Inside Your Heaven" (see "Chart Beat"). Since airplay on "We Belong Together" continues to set new records, Mariah Carey reclaimed the No. 1 position.

  • From Chart Beat Bonus: The disappointing news for Bo is that "Heaven" doesn't enter the Hot 100 at No. 1, which looked like a strong possibility last week. Alas, it will have to remain in the realm of possibility, not reality. Bice's single enjoyed a very healthy sales week, but suffered for lack of airplay on radio, and the "Idol" song couldn't overcome the record-setting airplay level achieved by Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together." Bo's "Heaven" is a new entry at No. 2 on the Hot 100, while Carrie's "Heaven" slides 1-3. This is the first time that the same song has occupied two out of the top three places on the Hot 100.

  • Mimi Reclaims The # 1 spot on The Billboard Hot 100 Chart!
Mimi sets the ALL-TIME audience record for the 3rd week in a row with "We Belong Together" having the biggest one-week Hot 100 audience total in the HISTORY OF BILLBOARD with 212.1 MILLION listeners breaking her own record AGAIN of 202.1 million LAST week!

We Belong Together claims the No. 1 spot on the following Billboard Charts:

#1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

#1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for the 7th week in a row

#1 on the Billboard Pop 100 Airplay Chart

#1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Song chart

#1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Airplay chart

#1 on the Top 40, Rhythmic Top 40 & R&B/Hip-Hop Billboard Monitor charts
