Download: Los Angeles' KIIS FM Interview with Mariah // 1:58 PM EST Updated by Lynn

This morning at about 7:45am, Mariah called in to KIIS FM to chat with Ryan Seacrest and Ellen K. about her Los Angeles shows in October. During the interview, Mariah also talked about the following topics:

  • Purple Food and Dieting. She denied the "Purple Food" rumor. "Does that sound realistic to you?" she asked Ryan.

  • Pepsi Smash Concert. That it was the first time they (with Randy Jackson) had rung the show from top to bottom and that it wasn't the actual show and had to make the set list shorter. That fans were great and thought the Pepsi Smash concert was a cute, little beginner/preparation for her tour.

  • Fearlessness. Ryan asked, "You can't just go out and do a normal show, how does Mariah rise in this performance?" She replied by saying Randy loves her "fearlessness." Mariah said that in "Vision of Love" she decided to do whatever she felt, like doing it in the upper register, and started doing ad-libs, that she doesn't care where she lands, "It'll be fine, we'll get to the end. When I get to the long a capella rift, it's having the freedom."

  • Janet Jackson and the Duet. She loves Janet. That they don't know each other well. That it wasn't the first time they met at Oprah's, they met a couple of times at clubs/parties. About the duet, Mariah said, "To me, it's a rumor because Jermaine [Dupri] hasn't called me." Mariah's waiting for Jermaine to call her so they could write the song, she said, "Ain't no song, ain't no duet."

  • Boyfriend. She told Ryan, "MYOB." (Mind Your Own Business) It's her way of "trying to be polite and don't want to answer the question."

  • The Vignettes. They fixed the audio so the audience could hear what's being said. She wants people to scream but she wants them to hear the dialogues.

Please Say Something About Mariah // 9:47 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    Hi Fred,
I wrote some weeks ago, but didn't get an answer. As my question is not-so-spectacular, I can understand why you skipped it, but I would really appreciate a quick answer. I asked about Mariah Carey's recent chart success: What were the highest Hot 100 positions of "Say Somethin'" and "Fly Like a Bird"? They both seem to be quite successful on certain R&B charts, but I didn't see either song enter the top 50 portion of the Hot 100.

What does this mean? Was Mariah's 2005 comeback just an "accident" and has the public turned away again?
    --Holger R. Heinrich, Berlin

Fred Bronson of Billboard's Chart Beat Chat answers:
The volume of mail received by Chart Beat Chat is so great that it's not possible to answer every question in the column. Sometimes even worthy missives are passed over; I do my best to select e-mails that are of the most general interest to post here.

It's also not possible to reply to every e-mail. If I did, writing Chart Beat Chat would become a full-time job. So, sometimes readers who send in worthy questions don't receive answers. I wish it were possible to reply to everyone, but it isn't. Please be assured I do read every e-mail, except for the obvious Spam.

One of the types of questions I usually resist answering is to simply provide chart positions, for a couple of reasons. First, if I did that in this column, I would receive hundreds of such requests. And second, if that's what Chart Beat Chat becomes -- simply a place to find out how high a single or album went -- this would become a rather dull column.

Having made you wade through this long reply, I think you deserve an answer, so I'll make an exception this time -- but this is not an invitation for other requests for chart positions. Our research department can handle those requests for a nominal fee.

On the Hot 100, "Say Somethin'" peaked at No. 79 in May. Mariah Carey's three previous singles all charted in the top two positions. "We Belong Together" spent 14 weeks at No. 1, "Shake It Off" peaked at No. 2 and "Don't Forget About Us" had a two-week reign.

"Fly Like a Bird" didn't chart on the Hot 100, but it did top the Adult R&B chart for two weeks, where it became Carey's second biggest hit, runner-up to "We Belong Together" (which ruled for eight weeks).

I don't think it means the Mariah comeback is over. I do think it means "The Emancipation of Mimi" is exhausted when it comes to releasing singles and we'll have to wait for something new to bring Carey back to the top of the charts.

The Second Mariah Carey Concert in Tunis // 4:37 PM EST Updated by Maggie

A true sanctuary for live shows, the stadium of El Menzah accomodated its second Mariah Carey concert on Monday the 24th, which launched "MC's" international tour after an absence that lasted three years. For this second show, Mariah Carey unleashed a series of vocal acrobatics, where the diva performed a "Best Of" compilation, for the most part choosing singles and remixes of her biggest hits from her fifteen albums.

An hour and a half of pure enjoyment, where one could appreciate this rare vocal talent, a soprano coloratura and her perfect mastery of the "whistle" register.

Can Mariah Carey attract a crowd despite the heat that enveloped the El Menzah Stadium? Oh yes, judging by this crowd that braved the heatwave and long hours of waiting to attend this last concert. Can you hear the clamor of the crowd? The show hasn't even begun! While waiting for the show to start, those in attendance let their imaginations run and walk in the footsteps of their idols, still taken by the memories from the unforgettable concerts by Michael Jackson or Sting. It's also a good time to stroll, reliving the stadium's best moments. Showtime creeps closer, as a voice announces that the show will start in five minutes. This announcement is perceived like a command by the crowd sprawled across the lawn, as they scramble one on top of each other for the best view, waving signs that read "I love you Mimi." The lights go out, so the musicians can take their places onstage discreetly, but the exciting shouting of the fans can be still be heard. The screens are lit and the stadium is transformed into a constellation of stars. The night begins with the giant screens showing the view from the top of a rollercoaster. It is immediately understood that the voyage that the audience embarks on will be one of dizzying heights and electrifying. Mariah makes her appearance in the midsts of a thundering ovation. She opens with "It's Like That," the first single from her album "The Emancipation of Mimi," her fourteenth album which saw worldwide success, selling over nine million copies. Like a ritual, the lyrics, the scenes from the videos, and the music cascade one behind another like in a dream. Next is "Heartbreaker," the remix version where the diva lets her voice roam freely over multiple octaves in front of a captivated crowd.

She follows with "Dreamlover" and "My All" before ceding the stage to her dancers who perform a series of dance routines. The artist returns to the stage with a warm welcome from the fans to perform "Honey," "Breakdown," and "Shake It Off." Mariah performed a variety of songs from her musical repertoire for this audience. The crowd is treated next to "Fly Like a Bird," "Fantasy," "Don't Forget About Us," and "I Know What You Want." The setlist for the second concert is practically the same as the first night. The loud cries continue to bounce off the walls of El Menzah while Mariah takes the time to change into a black dress. She finishes the last part of the show with "Thank God I Found You," a remix that get the excitement and adrenaline pumping again. "One Sweet Day," "Hero," "Vision of Love," and "Make It Happen" make up the last part of the show. "I am happy to be with you, I love Tunisia, I love this great crowd" said the diva who has sold more than 160 million albums worldwide before leaving the stage. The crowd slowly leaves the arena, in a trance. The success of this night is a result of the high hopes of the people that were satisfied.

Janet Defends Mariah's "Glitter" Performance // 3:11 PM EST Updated by Casey

On July 14, Janet Jackson called Boston's JAM'N 94.5 for a phone interview with Bobby Blaze. Janet and Bobby chatted about the possible collaboration with Mariah as well as the "Tennessee" role that was originally intended for Jackson. When Blaze began to ridicule "Glitter," Janet defended Mariah's performance, expressing "I thought she was wonderful in 'Glitter'." Below are transcribed excerpts from the interview.

Bobby Blaze: Now, who'd you work with besides Nelly? 'Cause we all hear of these rumors about you and Mariah Carey. What's up with that joint?
Janet Jackson: Well, we're trying to make it happen. So, you'll have to stay tuned. I mean, trying to get everyone together, and schedules are crazy. So, it's something that we wanna do, and we're just trying to make it work.

BB: Is the film ("Tennessee") actually still coming out?
    JJ: Mariah's doing it!

BB: Oh! She stole your film role girl! Damn!
    JJ: (laughs) Mariah's doing it.

    BB: No!
JJ: It's all good. I mean, they needed to go forward with it and they couldn't wait around for when I was gonna finish the project. We didn't know when we were gonna finish.

BB: Hey, maybe it's a blessing in disguise. It could be "Glitter" part two, girl. It could be a blessing in disguise!
    JJ: That's wrong!

BB: No, I'm just sayin'! It could, things happen for a reason, Ms. Jackson.
JJ: You know what, I think people don't give Mariah enough credit. I thought she was wonderful in "Glitter," and I thought she just got a really bad rap. And that wasn't what I think they tried to make it out to be.

"Come back" succeeded for Mariah Carey in Tunis // 5:27 PM EST Updated by Casey

A golden voice and a toned body: American singer Mariah Carey performed for two concerts in Tunisia, marking her return to the international music scene after an absence of three years.

Under the slogan "Mimi in Tunisia," the New York native with 160 million albums sold worldwide gave two shows on July 22 and 24, attended by some 60,000 spectators at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah in Tunis, lit up by thousands of lights.

Showing off her legs lasciviously, reminiscent sometimes of a cabaret, very much at ease despite the heat, Mimi gave a great show of songs from her biggest hits "Butterfly" and "The Emancipation of Mimi," her last album which sold over nine million copies.

"It's Like That," "My All," "Honey," followed by "Don't Forget About Us." "Dreamlover," "We Belong Together," and treated fans to "Shake It Off," "Breakdown," and "Fly Like a Bird."

With her strong and silken voice, alternating between romantic ballads and club bangers, the diva tooks breaks between songs to say "I love this crowd," or "How do you feel," "I love you Tunisia."

"She's fantastic!" was the opinion among concert-goers, some of whom attended both shows.

"Mini shorts and in great shape!" Said Francesco, 21, who came from Italy especially to see Mariah, referring to her "too sexy" outfit of micro shorts and a tiny top on Saturday. Monday night the diva performed in shorts and a bikini top, much to the enjoyment of the young Tunisians and fans from France, Italy, and Canada.

"It's fantastic! I never thought I would see her in flesh and blood," repeated Fatma, 17, from her perch in the stands.

Mariah "accomplished her return to the stage with success," said one radio personality, remembering that the diva had a rough patch in earlier years before renewing her success and racking up three Grammy Awards last February.

The star launched her tour for the first time in Africa, before heading to the US and Canada, and later Japan, under the slogan "The Adventures of Mimi."

    News Tidbits
--Skreem Entertainment Corporation announced its plans to release the new album from Trey Lorenz, Mariah's longtime friend and backup singer. In a statement issued via press release, company president Charles Camorata commented, "Releasing Trey Lorenz's new CD with Mariah Carey singing back-up will be a real coup -- who can forget his duet with Mariah Carey on MTV's "Unplugged" of the Jackson 5 hit song, 'I'll Be There.'"

--Using the top 10 singles from the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of July 25, 1998, Whitney Pastorek of Entertainment Weekly reviews 8-year-old songs and how they hold up today. Mariah's "My All" is among those evaluated in the new commentary feature.

    9. "My All," Mariah Carey
Confession time: I've never been the biggest Mariah Carey fan... but if I had to choose, this is the Mariah I'd want to hang with. She kept the vocal histrionics to a minimum on this ballad — the one that broke Diana Ross' record for most No. 1 hits by a female artist, FYI — just grazing the surface of the accompanying Spanish-tinged guitar as she quietly, desperately begs her lover to come back. Even when she lets it out ("'Cause I can't go oh-OH-oh-aw-ohn / Living in the memory of your song"), she reins it right back in. For a woman whose strong suit has rarely been self-control, this is a major accomplishment. B+

--According to DenverPost.com, Mariah "painted two doggies" for Aspen Filmfest's Best in Show charity auction. Click here more information on this benefit.

--Karl Lagerfeld, the world-renowned fashion designer, mentioned Mariah in a recent interview with The Sunday Times. Lagerfeld said Mariah "is appéttisante, an absolutely divine person."

--Pop singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado mentioned Mariah in a recent interview with The Vancouver Sun.

"You know what it is? This is my favourite type of music to perform when I'm washing dishes at home. I sing R & B songs, I sing Brandy songs, I sing Mariah Carey songs. For the first time, I actually put that type of material on my own album, so it's really liberating. You know, it kinda made my life a bit easier."

Nelly Says His Family 'Flipped Out' Over New Duet With Janet // 11:04 AM EST Updated by Casey

As you might guess, enjoying the distinction of working with both Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson in less than a year has been "a dream come true" for Nelly.

"Amazing," Nelly said of the collaborations while sitting in Mack's, the new sports bar he owns with the St. Lunatics, on Thursday. He recently filmed the video for his "Call on Me" duet with Jackson, and he worked with M.C. on her The Emancipation of Mimi album.

"I'm big fans of both of them. Mariah Carey, she's possibly the best singer I've heard," he said. "And you watch someone such as Mariah, who went from the highest of the high to the lowest of the low, and come back like she never missed a beat, and stand up and smack everybody in the face like, 'I'm still here; matter of fact I'm better' — that gives you inspiration. That keeps me going.

"Then Janet Jackson — come on, man, that's Penny! That's Charlene," he continued, referring to Jackson's sitcom roles on "Good Times" and "Diff'rent Strokes." "Where do you go from there? It's a beautiful thing."

Nelly said his family was especially excited when it heard about the Jackson song, which will appear on her forthcoming LP, 20 Years Old. "My family flipped out," he smiled, showing off a diamond grill covering the bottom row of his teeth. "They're definitely fans of the Jacksons. I grew up singing Jackson Five songs. My uncle put a little band together with all the kids, and I used to have to be Mike. This was a long time ago."

The King of St. Louis said he made it a point to do true collaborations with Mariah and Janet, rather than make the track the way artists typically do — where the singer records 90 percent of the record and sends the Pro Tools file to another studio for the MC to lay his verse and ad libs.

"I wanted to do something different," he explained. "I just don't want to be, 'You do the song and I put the 16 [bars] on the end, or eight bars on the front.' With Mariah, I went in, me and Mariah sat down and wrote the song out. With Janet, we went in, wrote the song out. It's not like they had the song done and said, 'Nelly, put your thing on it.' I'm happy it went that way because I feel more of a part of it. You can't take me off and still have a song."

Although Nelly loved recording with Janet, he deemed the Mariah sessions the most fun he's ever had in two days in a studio. "When me and Mariah did the joint, we had the studio locked down," he recalled. "I was working on Sweatsuit, Snoop was working on his album and Mariah was working on her album. We had all the studio's doors open because we're all family.

"Snoop's room was little more smoky than everybody else's," he joked. "Matter of fact, I was in with Christina Aguilera in my studio and was going back and forth with Mariah. We had the basketball goal in there, we was hooping — me, Ali and one of our partners [against] Snoop, Nate Dogg and somebody else. Everybody was chilling. We in the studio, hooping like we outdoors."

So is Nelly going to call on Janet or Mariah, or maybe both superstars to return the favor and sing on his next LP? Maybe — he isn't sure about any collaborations just yet. His next record won't drop until next year, he said. He wants to concentrate on releasing albums by the artists on his Derrty Entertainment imprint.

Big Gipp and Ali have their duo LP, Kinfolk, coming in the next couple of months and Murphy Lee might drop his second album, The Package, before this year's out as well. If not, the youngest 'Tic will come next year, followed by Nelly and new singer Avery Storm.

Mariah Carey in Tunis: A True Comeback Show // 1:07 AM EST Updated by Maggie

The international diva, Mariah Carey, performed at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah in Tunis in a gradiose concert, marking the launch of the star's summer tour.

Although it was an audience composed mostly of young people from Tunis, those from different regions of the country as well as foreign countries came in masses -- a total of 40,000 spectators -- to attend this major musical event in the summer of 2006 and to see one of showbiz's biggest stars.

Mariah Carey live in Tunis was equally the major media event in other countries as well, particularly in Europe, since Tunisia is the only country in this part of the world the star is scheduled to perform. No other concert is expected by the diva in Europe nor Africa. Ten years after Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey's performance in Tunisia, in front of an enraptured audience happy to see her sing for them, is the year's biggest musical event.

The star lived up to her reputation with her silken voice, both soft and strong (and estimated between five and seven octaves) and gave her all during this magical evening. The diva started the concert with one of her more recent hits "It's Like That" which" set fire to the stands and got the crowd to its feet, particularly the young people who knew the lyrics by heart.

She followed with both well known and lesser known songs from her rich and varied musical repertoire to convince us of her enormous vocal capabilities, her rare talent and her soft and upbeat melodies. The audience particularly enjoyed the hits "My All," "Hero," "We Belong Together," I Know What You Want," and above all the song that caused her international career to explode, "Without You."

The evening, peppered with R&B, soul, and club music, lasted nearly two hours. It was a true show of sound, lights, and dance, for the enjoyment of the diva's fans who have bought over 160 million of her albums worldwide.

It made a true "comeback" well received by the star who hasn't toured since 2003 and who is returning to the stage after the success of her album "The Emancipation of Mimi."

This night is the first of two concerts by Mariah at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah in Tunis. It marks the start of her summer tour titled "The Adventures of Mimi" that the star launches in Tunisia and follows next in a number of cities in the US and Canada. A portion of the profits from these concerts will be donated to charity. Six times platinum "The Emancipation of Mimi" has sold over nine million copies worldwide, and the star was rewarded at the 2006 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles that gives awards to the musical artists.

American Singer Mariah Carey Returns to the Stage // 8:59 PM EST Updated by Maggie

For her return to the stage after being gone for three years, the American singer Mariah Carey gave a concert that caught the attention of the press Saturday night in Tunis, at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah.

Facing the heat wave, the young people traveled towards the stadium in the afternoon, directed by the 3000 security officials. Other than the Tunisian fans, the admirers of the singer came mostly from European countries, notably France, Itale, the UK, and Germany.

The American diva, with 160 million albums sold worldwide, gave herself to please her fans. For an hour and a half, Mariah Carey performed her biggest hits "It's Like That," "My All," and "Fantasy" though skipping "Always Be My Baby" and sang a number of titles from her last album The Emancipation of Mimi.

Impressed by the ambiance, the singer rested between songs and told the audience: "I'm very happy in Tunisia. I love you," thanking the Tunisian people warmly and the first lady of Tunisia Leila Ben Ali, who presides over an assocation for employment of the disabled, with a portion of the proceeds of the concerts in Tunis benefiting her assocations.

The night ended a little after midnight on a more romantic note with "Don't Forget About Us," "Vision of Love," "Without You," and "We Belong Together."

"It was fantastic," gushed Caroline Cosgroune, a British woman who lengthened her trip in Tunisia with her husband and two daugthers to see their "favorite singer."

Mariah Carey will give her second concert Monday in the same stadium, as a prelude to a tour that will hit 30 cities in the US and Canada.

Review: Mariah's Night in Tunis // 2:47 PM EST Updated by Maggie

La Presse – Yes, Tunisia had high hopes when they tried to bring the biggest star of showbiz in the world to their modest country in a stadium meant for the steps of giants. Mariah Carey, the American superstar, announced her comeback last night at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah.

What did the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah become 100 tons of material, a week of work to put a 70m stage up, 200 projectors, and six giant screens later? Quite simply, a place ready for the biggest show of this world with sound so loud it will shake the body and can reach up to 85 decibels. The music offers plenty for the ears, plenty for the eyes, and plenty for the heart. And it doesn't matter which decibels, mind you! It's the sensual voice of a diva with five octaves.

One surpasses everything to live in the magical moments like the lives of the Tunisians! One of the greatest stars of the world sings for them! The audience is in for a fabulous trip! And the trip, the whole country came to attend this megashow organized by Interval Events. In the beginning of the afternoon, the opening of the doors (at 5:00 pm to be exact), the audience was there. At 9:00 pm, the steps and ground in front of the stage were filled with plenty of people and noise outside! There was a balcony with security officials as well. The audience was in good spirits, ready to start the party. The audience was composed mostly of young people, young couples, but also of families. One even saw a few seniors on the steps. The audience was composed equally of international journalists to cover this show.

10:40 pm: the lights go out. The Olympic Stadium of El Menzah is bathed in a night of celebration, there is nothing but the flashes the light up the portable screens. The huge show started with the voice of the superstar, resonating and alerting the audience of her arrival. "Hello Tunisia!" she cries and the audience crashed together into a single wave of people. Mariah Carey was there, in flesh and blood. No more people who had taken over the steps in the entrance interrupted the singer of 5 octaves as she generously served the Tunisians.

Sensually, extraordinarily at ease on stage, Mariah Carey seemed to have found herself at the Olympic Stadium. An artist who has intrigue, of the voice and of presence, for an audience that watched the most beautiful videos of the star. An historic moment for the audience! An audience who will be sure to also applaud loudly for a show of "Tarab." Because it’s that what it was last night at the Olympic Stadium: a Tunisian audience who brought with them their 3,000 years of heritage. "I love you," Mariah Carey said to them.

    Mariah Mentions
--From Metro.co.uk: Mariah Carey has declined an invitation to duet with Marilyn Manson. She said 'I like the look, admire how he keeps it original and get the sound in parts but, really, he is way too out there for me.'

--From MTV News: With "X-Men: The Last Stand" director Brett Ratner behind the camera, [Jessica] Simpson couldn't resist including a catfight, something Ratner mastered in Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker" video, in which Carey wrecked a movie-theater bathroom as her alter ego, Bianca. This time, the fight is between Simpson and Maria Menounos, who gets upset when she sees her boyfriend making eyes at the blonde bombshell. This leads to two fantasy sequences: one where the boyfriend imagines what it would be like to be with Jessica, and one where Maria imagines what it would be like to tear Simpson's hair out. "I ended up pulling her extensions out, and she pulls my extensions out," Simpson laughed.

--This week, Jonathan Gangi of FOX Sports suggests some alternatives to the phrase "hit a home run." Below is one of his suggestions for new home run slang which uses Mariah's name.

  • "That one should land him a date with Mariah Carey."

--From New York Daily News: In the two months since it's been released, p.i.n.k. has already found its way into the hands of celebrities like Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Mariah Carey and even rapper DMX, who pulled a bottle on camera with him on BET's "106 and Park," and who later insisted that p.i.n.k be provided backstage at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, where he is performing tomorrow.

American diva Mariah Carey arrived in Tunis Wednesday night. She will be celebrating two concerts in Tunis, this coming Saturday and Monday.

After two stopovers respectively in Frankfurt and in Saint Tropez, Mariah Carey arrived at Tunis carthage international airport.

To the delight of her many fans the star's private jet landed at the airport at 22:30 pm, last night. After being greeted by a traditional music and dance parade, the star cheerfully told journalists that she loved Tunisia and the children who came to wish her a happy stay in Tunisia.

Before her two performances at the El Menzah Olympic Stadium on July 22 and 24, the American star is expected to rest at the Hammamet sea side resort, situated about 60 kilometers from the capital.

"Tennessee" Producer Lee Daniels Makes Directorial Debut // 9:27 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Lee Daniels' directorial debut, "Shadowboxer" which opens Friday, is no less twisted and controversial than his previous work. It tells the story of two contract killers, Rose and Mikey (Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding Jr.), a stepmother and stepson, who happen to be lovers. And, if that weren't enough, Rose is dying of cancer.

Lee Daniels, 47, has made a name for himself tackling the type of dramas that few are willing to touch. So far it has paid off. "Monster's Ball" won critical acclaim and a best actress Oscar for Halle Berry. "The Woodsman" earned its star, Kevin Bacon, some of the best reviews of his career.

He returns to producing with his next film, "Tennessee," about two brothers who escape an abusive father, only to find out that one is dying of cancer. Mariah Carey stars as an aspiring country singer who loves Dolly Parton. "It's messy," Mr. Daniels said, "and I'll leave it at that."

    From Richmond:
For his next project, Daniels is working with another big star, albeit one who is known more for her voice and diva antics than for her work on the big screen. The movie, called "Tennessee," will star Mariah Carey as a "country western singer who can't sing," Daniels said. "She's a great kid. She's very, very cool," he added.

Since Mariah’s tour for "The Emancipation of Mimi" will last over three months, and she’ll be trekking across the US in a tour bus, Mariah Daily is putting together a special gift for Mariah that will make the trip a little more fun - a gift we want all her fans to be a part of!

As part of "The Adventures of Mimi" tour, we are putting together a huge basket of trinkets for Mariah to bring on tour. We’ll put DVDs, stuffed animals, books, snacks, etc. (all with a Mariah theme of course) and present it to her on tour.

How can you help? We need fans to send in gifts for Mariah! If you see something you think Mariah would like on tour - something unique - please send it to the address below. We encourage fans to get together with other fans from their area to make a creative gift for Mariah, something rich in your local culture. Make sure you include a letter to Mariah as well!

If you can’t ship something for Mariah, Mariah Daily would love help covering the costs of buying the items for the basket by accepting donations. All donations will be used to cover the cost of Mariah’s gift (Mariah Daily will make no profit). If at the end there are unused funds, the money will be donated to the Fresh Air Fund on behalf of Mariah’s fans worldwide.

We look forward to receiving your items and letters for Mariah, and we encourage all fans to take part, those from North America and internationally as well. Let’s make this a global fan project!

Please send all donations via PayPal to:

    fanbasket@mariahdaily.com.
Make sure you also include your letter to Mariah!

Please send all items for the basket to:

Part III: The Ultimate Fan Video
To keep the magic of "The Adventures of Mimi" tour alive, once Mariah has wrapped up her final concert in Phoenix, Arizona, Mariah Daily is once again bringing fans together in order to give Mariah a special gift for when she gets back home! We want to recapture the best moments of the tour by inviting fans to send us photos and videos to be a part of a fan video for Mariah. Do you have a classic photo of you dressed up as Mariah for a costume party? Or that prized picture of you and Mimi? Or how about you and your friends on your way to see Mariah in concert? We want your photos! Get together as a group of Mariah fans and take a roll of Mimi-inspired photos. If you have a fun, Mariah-themed picture for the video, send it in to tour@mariahdaily.com.

Make sure to keep checking back for updates on this project and addresses of where to send your letters for the regional fan books.

Janet Chats With Ryan Seacrest About Mariah // 4:30 PM EST Updated by Casey

Earlier today, Janet Jackson stopped by "On-Air with Ryan Seacrest" for an interview on L.A.'s 102.7 KIIS-FM. Janet chatted with Ryan about the "magic" Jermaine Dupri has made with Mariah, the first time the two "divas" met, and the possibility of a duet. Below are transcribed excerpts from the interview.

Ryan Seacrest: What is it that this guy (Jermaine Dupri) has? 'Cause he can be in a room, Mariah Carey, for example. I mean, he has made magic with Mariah Carey.
Janet Jackson: And, you know, a lot of people think it's just new magic. They've been together for a long, like way back in the day when she was having those hits. Some of those hits were Jermaine's, that he created for her. Umm... he's just, Jermaine's genius. A lot of people look at him as the modern-day Quincy Jones. There's nothing he cannot do. And he's fast! He is so quick in the studio. And that I really love 'cause I'm very impatient.

RS: Mmhmm... so you balance each other out to a degree. Oh no, I guess you're the same. You're really the same. He's quick, you're impatient. It all works.
    JJ: Yeah. (laughs)

RS: How 'bout the Mariah duet?
JJ: We're workin' on it. We're really workin' on it. A lot of people have been asking for it. And it's, we're trying to get it together, so we'll see. Hopefully it'll happen.

RS: The two of you obviously are friendly? You and Mariah.
JJ: Yes, you know the first time we met was at the Oprah legend's weekend.

    RS: Recently. Relatively recently.
JJ: Yeah, we had never ever, our paths had never crossed before, until then.

RS: See, we think you all live in the same neighborhood. You, Mariah, superstars, Shakira, I mean, whoever it is. We think that everybody lives on one street.
JJ: Right, everybody. They all know each other. There are a lot of people I have yet to meet.

RS: So, when you first met Mariah, what was that moment like?
JJ: It was hot as hell outside. So, she had her umbrella, 'mother diva' is what I call her. She's, I love her.

RS: Who's the bigger diva? Janet or Mariah?
JJ: (laughs) No! I think, I think Mariah wins the cake.

RS: And she'd be proud of that.
JJ: She takes it. She is. And, you know, a lot of people look at that as something being very negative, but I don't look at that as negative at all. She's very grand. She's like my sister. My sister La Toya's grand. Like, if they were to meet, they'd hit it off immediately.

--The Observer reports on celebrity merchandising. "Take celebrity perfume. The desire to smell like a superstar makes sense if you're a teenager and the star in question is someone fragrant looking - Victoria Beckham and Mariah Carey, say, who are both launching perfumes this year - but where will the market for Marilyn Manson's signature scent come from? He says it will be in the 'spirit of Salvador Dali' (but surely with a slight whiff of grease paint)."

--Mariah was the subject of two questions on VH1's "World Series Pop Culture" on July 13th. The first contestant answered correctly to "What Mariah Carey movie was a semi-autobiographical account of her rise to stardom?" by naming Glitter, and added that it was a good movie. Later in the show, the question was "On a classic episode of MTV's Cribs, what pop diva exercised on a stepping machine in high heels while giving a tour of her New York City penthouse?" and the competing contestant also answered correctly.

--Michael Jackson's trial concerning a money dispute ended in a split jury, but featured his "What More Can I Give?" video as evidence in the trial. MercuryNews.com reports that "Several jurors asked after the verdict to see a video of "What More Can I Give,'' which wasn't played during the trial. Plaintiff Michael Schaffel's attorney obliged, showing a multi-artist production with Jackson leading the singing, and stars such as Mariah Carey, Usher and Beyonce taking turns singing."

Boyz II Men Waiting for Their Mariah Moment // 7:55 AM EST Updated by Casey

Boyz II Men tenor Shawn Stockman commented on Mariah during a recent telephone interview with IndyStar.com. Below is an excerpt from the article.

Mariah Carey posted a strong comeback with her last album. Do you look at that and say, "We could do it as big again"?

"Of course. Mariah is talented, and you can't denounce her talent. Yeah, she's gone through a couple of personal things, but that didn't change the quality and the texture of her voice. It was only a matter of time before she would rise again and be on top. We feel the same way about ourselves. We're just waiting for our moment."

Basketball Star LeBron James Ogles at Sexy Mariah // 7:20 PM EST Updated by Lynn

ESPN's The Sports Guy, Bill Simmons recounts his personal highlights of Wednesday night's ESPY Awards. Below are the ones that mention Mariah.

  • "I happened to be sitting a couple of rows behind LeBron [James], which was funny because every time a female celebrity walked on stage (Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Ashley Judd, etc.), he looked more intense than he did during Game 4 of the Pistons series. If they ever do an ESPN Full Circle for the ESPYS, there needs to be a channel devoted just to LeBron's reactions to everyone who walks out."

  • "A well-known executive (not from ESPN) fell sound asleep during the middle of the show. That was my single favorite moment of the night other than LeBron staring Mariah Carey down like she was an Aston Martin. Hopefully there's videotape."

Mariah Looking To Tour For Musical Inspiration // 6:27 PM EST Updated by Liron

When not onstage during her fast-approaching Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour, Mariah Carey says she'll be laying down the groundwork for her next album. "I'm doing something I've never done before," the singer tells Billboard. "I'm doing the tour bus this time around. There will be much time for writing songs."

Carey says she's looking forward to the cross-country drive. "It's an experience I've never had," she says. "It will reconnect me, in a deeper way, to what's going on in the world -- to what people are doing and thinking."

The artist says she is looking to the road trip for lyrical and creative inspiration. "I fall back in love with the recording process and the studio when I've been away from it," she offers.

As previously reported, Carey's outing begins Aug. 5 in Miami. Three U.S. shows on the itinerary were pulled and substituted with dates in Canada, a move attributed by tour promoter Live Nation more to heat north of the border than softness in the United States.

"She sold out Toronto, she sold out Vancouver, she did over 10,000 tickets in Montreal, and she did well in Edmonton," Live Nation VP Brad Wavra says. "Why not gog into Winnipeg and Calgary and add another show in Toronto? The Canadian market is very hot now, and the exchange rate makes it very affordable to go up there and not feel like we're playing for short money."

Singers Pink and Mark Freehily Talk About Mariah // 6:15 AM EST Updated by Lynn

  • Pink has continued to evolve as an artist, rocking harder on the "Try This" album, then showing a strong protest slant on "I'm Not Dead," her base of support has remained much stronger overseas. The pop rocker tells Philadelphia Daily News:

"There's a lot of that going on with a bunch of artists. Americans seem more song-fixated, of-the-moment. Overseas, once they love you, they love you forever. Mariah Carey is another person who's had her ups and downs in the U.S. But she's always been huge in places like Japan."

  • In an interview with Sony/BMG Australia, Mark Freehily reveals that making the video for "Against All Odds" with Mariah is his favorite Westlife moment.

    What's your favourite Westlife moment?
"As an experience, but not necessarily the final product, making the video for the Mariah Carey duet was really cool cos we got to hang out with her for 3 days and they filmed it all on an Capri where she has a big house and a studio. So we got to go on her big massive yacht and go to dinner with her, and it was just a really crazy experience to be hanging out with Mariah Carey in a big mansion in Italy, you know?! That's the great thing about what I've done in these past 8 years in Westflife is these little things we get to do which are so cool."

Access Exclusive: A Mariah & Janet Duet? // 5:30 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey tells "Access Hollywood" in an exclusive interview that she's ready to warble with Janet Jackson.

Mariah's exclusive Janet tip came during an "Access" interview that will air Thursday. (Check out "Where To Watch" for your local time and station.)

Jermaine Dupri, record producer and incidentally, Janet's boyfriend, had earlier revealed that he was hoping to record a duet with Janet and Mariah.

When asked about the possibility of a duet with Janet, Mariah told "Access Hollywood's" Nancy O'Dell, "Jermaine (Dupri) keeps saying this, but Jermaine has to call me and tell me about it. I love Janet. Janet is wonderful. I'm a fan. I'll totally do it, but he's got to let me know so we can write the song."

When Janet was asked if there was truth to the two multi-Grammy winners teaming up, she played coy with "Access'" Shaun Robinson on the ESPY Awards red carpet Wednesday night saying, "There may be truth to that."

Ladies, we look forward to it!

PCD Star Melody Wants To Be Mariah // 6:32 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Pussycat Dolls stunner Melody Thornton has hinted she'll be the first to quit the sexy group after confessing her first bandmates initially hated her and she was far from happy when she wasn't chosen to front the band.

The "Don't Cha" singer insists the girls' happy family image isn't exactly what it seems, and she is only interested in using the group as a stepping stone to become the next Mariah Carey.

Thornton tells Blender magazine, "When I first met all of the girls, some of them - not the girls who are in the group now - were not as welcoming. "I was like, 'What? I'm a kid. Leave me alone." The sexy singer admits she has big solo plans: "I'm biding my time... We all see this as a springboard for something else. "Some girls have said, 'It's my dream to be in a pop group,' and I'm like, 'OK, because I want to be Mariah Carey.'"

The Branding of Mimi // 1:25 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey is spending much time in Los Angeles these days. She is rehearsing for her upcoming trek, the Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour. To be sure, she is in a good place, wholly focused on the tour's presentation - as well as the brand that has become Mariah Carey.

"I am in creative mode," Carey says during a break from rehearsals, "ready to embark on the next phase of my journey." Pausing for a few seconds, she adds, "Yes, life is pretty good right now."

Indeed. Since the April 12, 2005, release of the multimillion-selling "The Emancipation of Mimi," Carey's career, which has had its share of ups and downs, has reached new peaks.

This is not lost on Carey or her manager, Benny Medina of Handprint Entertainment, who are both actively leveraging Carey's brand, which is based around her artistry and music.

In a career that spans 16 years, Carey has steered clear of brand marketing initiatives - until this year, that is. In the past six months alone, she has partnered with Intel (a TV spot), Elizabeth Arden (a fragrance line due next spring), Pepsi (a multiplatform campaign featuring exclusive content) and Claire's (where her jewelry and accessories line, Glamorized, is sold).

On the near horizon is an inexpensive apparel line for dogs, to be sold exclusively at Claire's. Further off in the distance is a line of high-end, luxury women's watches. Consider it the two sides of Carey: one focused on her younger fans, the other focused on her own lifestyle.

Early in her career, following such No. 1 hits as "Vision of Love" and "Someday," Carey says she was approached by a company to appear in one of its commercials. "But the creative for the campaign was too goofy," she says with a laugh. "It centered on my voice and a breaking glass. It just wasn't me. It wasn't how I wanted to portray myself.

"Intel was my first brand partner," Carey says. "The fact that the company deals in high-level technology, which music is a part of, appealed to me." Carey also appreciated that the 30-second TV spot for the Intel Centrino mobile technology was not "hugely exploitive," but rather "creatively inspiring."

Created by McCann-Erickson New York, the ad, which debuted in February, featured Carey and the sounds of "Mine Again," a classic-sounding R&B song featured on "Emancipation." Carey acknowledges that for this deal to work it was key that a nonsingle, album track be used. "It exposed the song as well as the album to more people."

The ad was a preview to a larger, worldwide Centrino Duo campaign - encompassing print, Internet, TV and in-store platforms - that commenced in March and features Carey and other celebrities.

For Medina, such a campaign was the ideal way for Carey to be introduced to brand marketers. "A package like this one made perfect sense," he says. "It's a multiplatform, multi-initiative concept that was strategically planned. It hits many eyeballs."

The same is true of the Pepsi Cool Tones & Motorola Phones campaign. For this summer-long sweepstakes, Carey wrote and produced 20 original voice and music tones. During this promotion, which also spotlights Mary J. Blige, the All-American Rejects, producer Scott Storch and others, Pepsi could give away more than 260 million ringtones. (One in three codes found under the caps of approximately 800 million Pepsi products will be good for a ringtone at pepsismash.com.)

Carey kicked off the promotion with a national TV ad in May. The spot, helmed by BBDO New York, features one of Carey's new ringtones, "Time of Your Life."

According to Pepsi VP of colas Russell Weiner, by combining forces with Carey and the use of unique ringtones Pepsi was able to crack the teen market in an interesting way.

Since the promotion's May 15 launch, unique site visits have doubled. "We've received several million entries," he notes.

Thousands of consumers have downloaded Carey's ringtones, with the majority opting for "Time of Your Life." Pepsi executives believe this is clear evidence that the TV commercial has helped raise awareness for the promotion.

The beverage company is hosting a one-off Pepsi Smash concert July 29 at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. Carey enthusiasts can win tickets to the show via radio (KIIS) and retail (7-11 stores) promotions.

ON TOP AND ON THE ROAD
Medina, who has overseen Carey's career since 2004, views his client's current business dealings as an ongoing development of her talent and vision--coupled with the ability and willingness to take chances and execute things on her own.

Consider this: After the flop that was "Glitter," Carey will star in "Tennessee," an indie film from producer Lee Daniels ("Monster's Ball").

"With Mariah, it all trickles down from the top," he explains. "And she is at the top at this point in her career."

The six-times platinum "The Emancipation of Mimi" garnered three Grammy Awards earlier this year and recently celebrated its one-year anniversary on The Billboard 200. In this issue, it sits at No. 120 on the tally.

The album includes the singer/songwriter's 16th and 17th No. 1 singles, "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us," respectively. With "Don't Forget About Us," Carey tied Elvis Presley for the most No. 1s on The Billboard Hot 100. As an active recording artist, she now has the potential to pass the Beatles' record high of 20 Hot 100 chart-toppers.

The biggest-selling album of 2005, "Mimi" has sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide, according to Island Records. This brings Carey's total career sales to 160 million units worldwide.

Tour promoter Live Nation has the luxury of not only aligning with a huge album, but also two decades of hits to promote. But historically, Carey's touring numbers have not been in the league of her success at retail.

Producers vow her North American tour, which commences Aug. 5, will be different. "Mariah Carey put out a career-defining album a year ago--we're about to embark on the defining tour for her," says Brad Wavra, VP at Live Nation and point person for the tour. "This will be the biggest tour she has ever undertaken and the largest audience she's ever played to."

Faisel Durrani, president of marketing for Live Nation, has orchestrated a massive national marketing and public-relations platform that has kept Carey in the public eye. While national promotions aren't exactly unique, what is unique here is Carey's commitment to the campaign.

"She's been involved in everything, from daily phone calls to working with us in creating the radio and television spots and being very hands-on with the print campaigns," Durrani says. "She's very focused about her brand and the message she wants to get out there."

A huge promotional blitz has led to Carey hyping the tour in USA Today and on several TV shows, including "Today," "Live With Regis and Kelly," MTV's "TRL," BET's "106 & Park" and "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

"Mariah has gone out and really done the work," Wavra says. "She has put in a tremendous amount of personal time. This is the difference between a successful tour and a tour that's mediocre."

Wavra says the level of cooperation between label and promoter has been high. "Benny Medina has orchestrated a great cooperative effort between the promoter and the record company on this project," he says. "Mariah delivered them a great record, IDJ marketed and branded that record and helped bring it into the public's homes."

Label and promoter are sharing data on radio buys and promotions, "and we're working with the label's sales department to create retail promotions with their retail partners," Wavra says.

Carey's broad appeal presents a challenge and an opportunity. "She's a unique artist in that she means as much at the top 40 format as she does at the urban, rhythmic and hot AC formats," Durrani explains. "Normally, when we take a tour out we're hitting primarily one format and there's usually a secondary format that we're trying to hit. In Mariah's case, there are really five formats we hit simultaneously."

An unpredictable U.S. tour market and a red-hot Canadian market led to some shuffling of the route, with three U.S. shows pulled and four more dates added, including three in Canada. Live Nation calls this action more a reaction to the heat north of the border than softness in the United States.

"She sold out Toronto, she sold out Vancouver, she did over 10,000 tickets in Montreal, and she did well in Edmonton. We thought, 'Why not go into Winnipeg and Calgary and add another show in Toronto?' " Wavra says. "The Canadian market is very hot now, and the exchange rate makes it very affordable to go up there and not feel like we're playing for short money."

Wavra is confident that the tour will wind up as one of the year's most successful. "I'm going to say that we'll be doing 80%-100% business across 32 major arena dates on this tour," he says.

"The results are going to be there at the box office and onstage," Wavra continues. "It's the work ethic of the artist in realizing that to make a tour successful in this day and age you can't sit back and wait for it to happen. You've got to engage, and she has engaged with enthusiasm and vigor."

Carey's new taste for branding also plays a role with the tour - Gillette Venus is a trek sponsor. Named the official 2006 Celebrity Legs of a Goddess in May, Carey will lead the nationwide search for the woman with the most beautiful legs in the United States.

Legs of a Goddess contests will be held at five stops along the route: Miami (American Airlines Arena, Aug. 5), Atlanta (Philips Arena, Aug. 9), Philadelphia (Wachovia Center, Aug. 11), Boston (TD Bank North Garden, Aug. 21) and New York (Madison Square Garden, Aug. 23).

Whereas Carey once shunned branding opportunities, today the challenge is careful management of ongoing campaigns. "You don't want a clutter of unmanageable campaigns going on at the same time," Medina says.

Carey's exclusive licensing agreement with beauty products company Elizabeth Arden includes development, marketing and distribution of her own prestige line of fragrances. Carey's first fragrance is due next spring; its name will be announced early next year. Price points will be in the - range.

It was Carey's overall brand that resonated with execs at Elizabeth Arden, which also has fragrance lines from Elizabeth Taylor and Britney Spears. "Mariah is a remarkably dynamic and successful artist around the world," Elizabeth Arden executive VP of global marketing Ron Rolleston says. "She's a genuine star, larger than life and incredibly passionate. We like that passion."

And it doesn't hurt that she has a significant fan base worldwide that reaches across all age and ethnic groups, Rolleston adds.

When working with a celebrity, Rolleston says it's important to make the fragrance autobiographical. "Mariah has genuine opinions about what she likes. She provides leadership when it comes to what she wants."

Carey, who has taken an active role in the creation of her first fragrance, likens the process to writing and producing songs. Fragrances have top, bottom and middle notes, she says. "For me, this is where music and fragrance come together. I guess you could say we belong together."

    News Tidbits
--Below are more photos of the "star dog" Mariah painted for Aspen Filmfest's Best in Show charity auction. Mariah's canine was a main attraction in Aspen this Independence Day as six of the 23 fiberglass dogs currently on display around town were featured in the annual 4th of July Parade.

--Reminder: Please continue to vote for Mariah as your "Choice Music: Female Artist" and "Choice Music: R&B Artist" for Teen Choice 2006. The awards ceremony will broadcast live from the Gibson Amphitheater, Universal City, California August 20th at 8:00pm ET on FOX.

    Mariah Mentions
--From SanLuisObispo.com: The decline [in album sales] reflects in part a dearth of big hits compared to the same period in 2005, which saw Mariah Carey and rapper 50 Cent each release multi-platinum sellers.

--From Inside Bay Area: [Christina] Aguilera claims women such as Etta James as her inspiration but she's clearly made Mariah Carey her actual singing template. Carey is a gifted vocalist too, with a range and clarity of timbre that anyone short of Aretha or Ella would kill for. Pity that both Carey and Aguiliera insist on singing every note with an orgy of vocal runs and unnecessary embellishments.

The technical term is "melisma" but "vocal diarrhea" is equally descriptive in capturing how melodic arrangements with poise and simplicity get crammed through an esophageal shredder. Jazz and soul singers were the first to popularize melisma, using it judiciously as both displays of vocal virtuosity as well as for emotive effect. The problem has come in more contemporary times, following first Whitney Houston, then Carey's insinuation of the technique into modern pop songs. Since then, melisma has become less an enhancement and more of a vanity vehicle. See "American Idol's" warbling, sonic abominations for proof of how the malaise has spread.

--From The Times of India: They're called purple dinners or mauve meals, depending on what you are having. The latest fad diet devised by singer Mariah Carey in consultation with her nutritionist involves eating a diet that is primarily purple in colour based on the anti-ageing and slimming properties of these foods.

--Emilie Le Strange, who studies music at the Victoria University of Wellington, mentioned Mariah's "We Belong Together" in a recent feature titled Life's Soundtrack. Below are excerpts from the article.

I was walking to the bakery the other day listening to Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” and I actually got choked up. For no particular reason. But I had listened to that song a lot during my last break-up, and there is a hugely personal, emotional attachment to it. I wanted to sing along with it at the top of my lungs: “Who’s going to talk to me on the phone til the sun comes up?!!” But instead I bought two almond croissants and had downed them both before I got home again.

Not everybody likes asparagus, but everybody likes music. And every person’s life soundtrack is going to be different. I’ve got first dibs on “We Belong Together.”

--Shawn Parker, who claims to possess an ability to instantly tell whether someone is African-American with what he calls his "Blackdar," mentioned Mariah in a recent Opinion column he wrote for The Onion. Below is an excerpt from the column.

Okay, so my blackdar is not 100 percent infallible. Sometimes, on very rare occasions, it fails me. Like with Mariah Carey. At first, I was positive she was black, but now I'm not so sure. And that guy on the Yankees, Derek Jeter. I'm pretty on the fence about him, too. But, like I said, that's the rare exception. Almost always, I'll look at a person and immediately know for sure whether they're black, like, say, Jesse Jackson, or not, like Peter Jennings.

--From Redlands Daily Facts: [Lori] Larson was recently told by her voice teacher that she has a three-octave range, which she sees as an exciting musical tool. The average person has a one-and-a-half-octave voice range, while Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston have a four-octave range.

--From Orange County Weekly: Mariah Carey has earned the Gillette Venus Award, not for her latest album, which has gone platinum six times, but for her shapely legs.

Pub singalong is flop of the pops // 11:39 PM EST Updated by Casey

Some might say playing Mariah Carey songs is a crime in itself...

But for Lisa Worrall, the proprietor of The Vine Tavern in School Street, Mosborough, the offence was so serious she ended up being taken to the High Court.

The reason? She was caught playing hits including 'Someday', 'Emotions' and 'Endless Love' without a licence.

The court heard Worrall has now brought her licence up to date, but a top judge ordered her to pay £1,428 in legal costs to music royalties collectors Phonographic Performance Ltd or PPL.

Worrall, who was not present in court and was not represented, must pay the bill within 14 days.

Lindsay Lane, counsel for PPL, said one of their inspectors called at the premises in October last year and heard tracks from Mariah Carey's Greatest Hits album including 'Make It Happen' and 'Dream Lover' being played, even though no licence was in force.

A PPL spokesman said: "Whenever you play a sound recording in public, there are two separate licence fees to be paid.

"PPL distributes its licence fees to record companies, recording artists and musicians, and the Performing Rights Society collects a separate licence fee which they distribute to composers and music publishers.

"A licence is required for any event except a family or domestic gathering, such as a wedding reception or birthday party.

"PPL sometimes waives fees for charity events."

Ebony Magazine: Mariah Carey's Big Comeback // 3:13 AM EST Updated by Lynn

After Award-Winning Year, Superstar Diva Takes Show on the Road

It could have been called "The Vindication of Mariah," and people would have understood. Yet, Mariah Carey titled her most recent recording The Emancipation of Mimi, and the tremendously successful six-times platinum CD became the best-selling disc of 2005 with more than 9 million units sold. It also earned her three Grammy Awards and anchored what some say is the best year ever for this multitalented songbird.

For Carey, success is perhaps the best revenge and response to the media critics and naysayers in the music industry and beyond who had written her off and sounded the death knell for what started out as a brilliant career. The resilient artist has demonstrated what it takes - enormous talent, guts and perseverance - to overcome adversity and endure personal and career setbacks.

The second phase of the comeback celebration is Carey's two-month tour that will kick off in early August and continue into October. The buzz escalates as the kick-off date nears. "I'm really excited about it," she says of the tour, adding that she also is especially excited about working with Randy Jackson, who will resume his role as her musical director. She says she knew Jackson long before he became famous for his role on American Idol. "There will be more than a few wardrobe changes," she says, adding that she will be mindful not to bore her fans by being off stage too often.

That's because concertgoers will want to hear her sing her endearing hits, from her debut "Vision of Love" on through to her recent No. 1 singles, "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us." She has now tied Elvis Presley's 17 Billboard Hot 100 hits, but Carey has a good chance of surpassing the Beatles' all-time high of 20 No. 1 hits.

She named the tour The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour (rather than The Emancipation of Mimi) to reflect her life. "It's been like a roller-coaster ride," she says in an interview while relaxing in her home in Tribeca in New York City. "I don't take myself too seriously. I always try to turn things into the positive - the glass is half-full, not half-empty. I just turn it around and don't let anything keep me down. I've come a long way in terms of just getting through each obstacle that was put in my way. This tour is going to reflect that, but in a subtle way. I'm not trying to ram a message down anybody's throat. The true message is in my songs overall. This is a moment in my life that is really exciting, and it really has been a ride to get here. If you don't take a risk, you never have the experience. I've definitely taken some risks! But that's what life is. It's like God doesn't put anything in front of us that is too much for us to handle. I really believe that.

"I just want to go on the road and enjoy myself with my fans. It's our moment to celebrate, to have an adventure. First, you get emancipated, then you have an adventure."

Carey's emancipation came at a price, a very public price. After her debut album earned her two Grammy Awards, followed by a succession of hits each year during the '90s, her life and career hit a series of potholes. The rough period began with the breakup of her four-year marriage to record executive Tommy Mottola (20 years her senior), who had signed her to his label in the late '80s. She finally got out of her contract with Sony and signed with Virgin Records. Then there were reports that she has a "breakdown" in 2001 while dealing with the pressures of filming the movie and recording the soundtrack for Glitter. (Neither project did well.) She checked herself into a treatment facility for exhaustion. Soon after, Virgin bought out her contract. It was a difficult time for Carey, who was still in her 20s. She recalls how she spent hours on a particular flight reading negative and incorrect press clippings about herself.

"I was just really surprised by how big a deal people made out of it," she says of the incident, adding that she simply was exhausted and needed some rest. "I was working within a system where my ex-husband was still in control, so those were some of the hardest days of my life. That was really why I was struggling, I was off Sony, finally, but at the new label I had two weeks to set up a record. It was just draining the life out of me because I still felt I had to fight against the system... The intensity of the label that I came off of was so huge that I still had to fight against it because I think certain people knew that if I succeeded, it made their efforts to make me look like a puppet in vain."

"For me to fight on their level, their playing ground, didn't work. I was in an uphill battle and it was time for me to just stop. Sometimes you have to do that because you're literally, physically going to collapse, and that's what was happening to me. I never looked at it as breakdown. Even a therapist told me that people don't have breakdowns and then the next day you're talking to them and they're fine. 'This is what happened to you [the therapist said]: You were overworked and nobody was treating you like a person, and you allowed it because you've been pushing yourself that way forever and you are used to a dysfunctional life. That's how it is'."

That was then. Today Carey says she is surrounded by a "really good support system," with entertainment veteran Benny Medina as her manager and L.A. Reid as chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group, now her record company. "L.A. is the first record executive who really understands me as an artist," Carey says. "He wasn't trying to put me in some box that everybody wanted to put me in."

Carey has never fit neatly into anybody's box. As a child, she loved to sing and she credits her mother for the "genes." She started vocal lessons when she was 4. As a kid she spent a lot of time listening to radio and her sister's records, taking in the soulful sounds of Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Al Green. Gospel music also was a great influence, and on occasion she accompanied her late paternal grandmother, who was Black, to a Baptist church. By the time Carey was in high school, she was writing her own songs, several of which appeared on her debut recording.

For most of her life, Carey says she was not in touch with her father and had limited contact with the African-American side of her family. But in recent years that changed, and she is grateful that she had a chance to spend time with her father before he died several years ago. "I was fortunate to be able to have a relationship with my father," she says. "My parents got divorced when I was young. When you grow up with one parent, you get one side of the story. I'm not saying there was a deliberate thing that happened, but that's just the way it is. So I was fortunate to find out things I never knew about my father. For one thing, I never knew he was in touch with my music and my career. He wrote me a letter [during those rough times]: 'It doesn't matter whatever is happening. You've always been a star to me, even before anybody knew who you were.' It meant so much to me."

In her home in Tribeca, she has a special place for the cards, photographs and family mementoes that her father left her, including notes she had written when she was kid. "I never knew he was sentimental," she says. "I was grateful to be able to spend time with him before he got sick. It was unfortunate that I lost him soon after, but I was grateful for the time I was able to spend with him."

Carey often jokes about having a "dysfunctional" family, marriage and life. But she has found stability and solace by establishing a strong relationship with God and her church. "I really give credit for everything to God. Everything I have is because He has given it to me. So if I've had to go through some times that were a little difficult, and where some people had some different opinions about me - they still do and always will - but as long as I have that unconditional love from God, and I realize that no matter what, He is the one who will always be here for me, regardless. For this particular moment in my life, I've been able to have a really good relationship with my pastor, [the Rev.] Clarence Keaton of True Worship Church [who performed on the Grammy telecast with Carey earlier this year]. He's just really a great person. That is something that has really helped me."

When asked if there is a special man in her life, Mariah says she prefers not to divulge details. "I don't feel comfortable being in like 50,000 different relationships," she says. "I've never been that type of person. I was married and that didn't work out, and that is something that in a lot of ways shaped the way I approach relationships." The man she chooses to spend time with "would be on the same page with me spiritually, have a sense of humor and is not concerned about being overshadowed by the fame thing."

After the tour, Mariah immediately will start production for the movie Tennessee. Acclaimed producer Lee Daniels saw her performance in Wise Girls and felt that she was perfect for the role of a waitress who takes a cross-country journey to tend to family business. "It's not a money-making moment for me," she says of the independent film. "It's another way to explore my creativity and to be able to work with someone of Lee's caliber."

While some say that Mimi is the best record of Mariah's life and career, she disagrees. "I don't feel that this is the best album of my life. That is yet to come. I'm ready to get back into the studio. I have so many ideas." And so much more music to make.

Best lyrics of this generation // 5:44 PM EST Updated by Casey

What are the best song lyrics of the past 13 years? The answer came from more than 5,000 music fans who voted in a lyrics poll by Billboard and USA WEEKEND at Billboard.com. Although all the lyrics of the songs listed below translated into hits, it was no surprise that the most votes, 33%, went to Mariah Carey's We Belong Together.

Carey knows how to create lyrical magic by writing incredible songs that really speak to the masses. The proof: "We Belong Together" was the "Hot 100 Song of the Year" at "Billboard's 2005 Music Awards," and it was far and away the biggest hit of last year.

    Here, your poll results:

    1. "We Belong Together," Mariah Carey (2005)
    2. "Smooth," Santana, featuring Rob Thomas (1999)
    3. "Fallin'," Alicia Keys (2001)
    4. "Lose Yourself," Eminem (2002)
    5. "Hey Ya!," Outkast (2003)
    6. "Stay," Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories (1994)
    7. "Gangsta's Paradise," Coolio (1995)
    8. "Missing," Everything but the Girl (1994)
    9. "No Scrubs," TLC (1999)
    10. "Family Affair," Mary J. Blige (2001)

Read the lyrics of Carey's winning song and the rest of the songs on "Billboard's" top 10 list.

Insider: Mariah Carey may be in ET for film shoot // 7:51 AM EST Updated by Casey

Look cool, y'all. Sultry Top 40 siren Mariah Carey could be in the house -- and by "house," I mean the Knoxville area -- in a few months to film her new movie, titled, appropriately enough, "Tennessee."

What? How can this be? Why is she doing this? Enough with your questions already. Am I not a mere mortal? OK, here's the scoopage.

Former Knoxville resident Russell Schaumburg wrote the screenplay for "Tennessee," an independent film going into production in November. It's about two brothers who hit the road to Tennessee to reunite with their estranged father.

Russell is a 1989 Webb High School graduate, and "Tennessee" is the first major screenplay he has sold. Part of the movie plays out in New Mexico, another part in Texas, and the last part in Nashville and the East Tennessee area, near the mountains.

"I think there is a really good chance they will shoot something in East Tennessee," Russell told the Insider recently. "Mountains play a significant thematic role in the movie."

If it happens, the filming probably would happen either at the end of the year or early 2007. And, of course, Mariah would be part of it along with co-stars James D'Arcy and Ethan Peck.

Mariah, or "Mimi," as the peeps in the biz call her, will play Krystal (yes, named after the restaurant), an aspiring country music singer who gets caught up in a road trip to Tennessee.

"She plays an important role in helping the boys go home," Schaumburg says.

Schaumburg has not met Mariah yet, but he's already daydreamed about what he would show her of his hometown.

"You know about the fireflies up in the mountains that do their dance? I would love to take her there to see it," Schaumburg says. "I think she'd dig that. And I'd probably take her to eat at the Tomato Head."

Later he e-mailed the Insider to amend his dream: "I would take Mariah on a boat down the Tennessee River to a big UT football game. I mean, that's a no-brainer!

"It's true East Tennessee at its best: A big boat, a big game, a big time at Neyland Stadium in the fall -- that's the ticket."

After that? "Well, I'd like for her to do a private concert at the Tennessee Theatre for me and 1,000 of my closest friends," he says with a laugh.

    Ah, that boy dreams big.

--Please continue to vote for Mariah as your "Choice Music: Female Artist" and "Choice Music: R&B Artist" for Teen Choice 2006! The awards ceremony will broadcast live from the Gibson Amphitheater, Universal City, California August 20th at 8:00pm ET on FOX.

    Mariah Mentions
--Sam Brace, a 22-year-old UA student who currently plays bass guitar for Murder Victim, mentioned Mariah in a recent interview with Tucson Weekly.

Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

I really don't believe in guilty pleasures, but there are definitely some bands and singers I listen to that I've been made fun of for. For example, my friends don't understand why I love the new Mariah Carey album, but I think it's one of the best albums in the past few years.

--From Mississauga News Online: [Tiffany] Costa had been selected out of a group of 50 contestants to be one of the 10 semi-finalists battling it out on the main stage in front of Metalworks judges. Singing I will always love you by Whitney Houston, the first song she ever sang in public when she was seven-years-old, Costa was able to push it to the top three where she sang Hero by Mariah Carey.

She said she chose those songs because she could express herself through soul and give a little piece of who she is.

"When I was small I loved Whitney Houston, and to date, it's Lara Fabian, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and those singers that put a lot of power and soul into their music. I love the richness, too," said Costa. "I was amazed with the soul and how much they could express themselves through singing, transferring words into music, singing poetry, lyrics and everything."

--From FOXNews.com: Mariah Carey has been noted for her penchant for renting a yacht more than 170 feet long with massive staterooms and a Jacuzzi.

--From ETonline.com: About six months ago, the svelte Janet [Jackson] was seen in published photos looking like she had packed on a few extra pounds, but the star explains that she gained weight specifically for a movie role.

"I put on the pounds for a film I was to do with Lee Daniels, the producer of 'Monster's Ball,' which a lot of people didn't know," Janet tells Kevin. "They wanted a full-figured woman. She's from the South, a waitress."

Janet says they had to push the project back, and she had to pass on the opportunity in order to work on her new album. She now thinks that Mariah Carey will take on the role. Of course, she had another assignment to take care of -- losing the weight!

--From BostonHerald.com: Other music moneymakers who will be hitting the Hub in the next few months include Mariah Carey, Shakira, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Barbra Streisand and Roger Waters. None of those shows have sold out yet.

--From EdmontonSun.com: In a way, despite its success, the sunny I'm Like a Bird is the anachronism in [Nelly] Furtado's discography. Her tastes have always run more towards the world of R&B. Her first exposure to music was through underground rappers and DJs and she's cited artists like Salt-N-Pepa, Mariah Carey and TLC as influences.

--From USATODAY.com - Idol Chatter: [Lisa] Tucker just got an iPod for her birthday and has loaded it with Jimi Hendrix, Gavin DeGraw, Mariah Carey and lots of other artists for the tour. Once it's over, she'll be exploring ideas for a sitcom. (You may remember her guest stint on The OC earlier this year.)

--From International Herald Tribune: Precisely because of its scarcity, with a price to match, Cristal has enjoyed its cachet with rappers. "Hip-hop has always been an aspirational lifestyle," said June Ambrose, a fashion stylist who has worked with Mariah Carey, Jay-Z and Blige. "In the beginning, the goal was just, 'Give me the most expensive watch, the most expensive car, the most expensive bottle of Champagne.'"

--From Playbill News: [Michael] Balderrama has been a scene-stealer in Saturday Night Fever, where he and Natalie Willes turned "Salsation” into a sensation, and Urban Cowboy, where he and Michelle Kittrell did a drunken adagio duet that became a tipsy tour de force. Besides grooving out in Movin' Out, the six-foot-one Texan has danced beside Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan and Mariah Carey.

--Katie Olsovsky, an opposite on the USA Women's National Volleyball Team, mentioned Mariah in a recent interview with USA Volleyball.

What are the top songs in your iPod?

Always changes, but my favorite albums are Usher, the Killers, Ne-Yo, Panic! At the Disco, Mariah Carey, Black-eyed Peas, and a bunch of techno.

--From PrideSource: Madonna's never been in the legion of vocalists like Cyndi Lauper, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, but she's an easy sell when it comes to elaborate theatrical productions, which the DVD for "Secret" wisely, but intermittently, flaunts.

Universal to Sell CDs in New Forms // 12:15 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Is the CD format dead? Universal Music, who is behind such artists as U2 and Mariah Carey, don't think so. They are planning a strategy to revamp the format, introducing new tiers of CD packaging in Europe. These will range from plush, deluxe versions of CDs to bare-bones cardboard sleeves, which will be intended to be sold at prices that equate to those charged for online sales of music.

Despite these days of MP3 players and iTunes and so forth, the CD is still the main medium by which music is sold. So Universal Music Group International plans to reboot the consumer's experience of the format. Some ninety percent of their sales are still in physical, as opposed to electronic format, so the CD is still very important to them. And they want to ensure that the format endures for as long as possible.

The middle tier of Universal's CDs will be sold in a new "super jewel box" designed to be stronger and more durable than the standard jewel box. Universal Music plans to absorb the extra manufacturing costs, estimated to be about 3 to 5 euro cents per unit.

Although it does not set retail prices, Universal Music expects the deluxe CDs to sell for an average of 19.99 euros ($25.61), the standard for 14.99 euros and the basic for 9.99 euros. The formats are due to be introduced across the UK and Europe from September.

Adding Up The Chart-Toppers // 1:11 AM EST Updated by Lynn

"In last week's Chart Beat you said there have been 11 chart-toppers [in 2006], and then this week you say "Promiscuous" is the 12th song to assume [pole position] in 2006. That latter statement is correct, but weren't there 12 chart toppers as of last week (and now 13)? "Don't Forget About Us" was No. 1 in 2006, even if it didn't assume the position in 2006. To act like it wasn't No. 1 this year would basically mean there was no chart for the first week of 2006."

Fred Bronson of Billboard Chart Beat answers:

"In the 14 years that I've been writing Chart Beat, I've always counted the same way. The final No. 1 song of a calendar year belongs to the year in which it peaked.

That's why I refer to songs that "assumed pole position" or "advanced to No. 1" in a calendar year. Once in a while I forget to qualify the statement, so I understand why you would question the count. I'll be more careful in the future to include the qualification so there is no doubt. "

--On AceShowbiz.com's June 2006 edition of its Celebrity Buzz list, Mariah Carey's name still firmly circulates on the top 5 as she has taken seat on number 4 (up 1 from last month). Brandon Routh, Britney Spears and Jenna Jameson take the top 3 spots, respectively.

--The tenth installment of the Kidz Bop series includes the Kidz's rendition of Mariah's "Don't Forget About Us" as track #18. Due out August 1, 2006, this 18-track CD is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com for $13.98.

--For fans of Tucson's youth rock scene, Tora Woloshin is 16 years of power-packed vocals backed by the burgeoning rock band, Heartfelt Confessions. To local media outlets, she was the girl screwed over by the reality television talent search "American Idol." In an interview with Arizona Daily Star, Tora credits her musical influence growing up listening to Mariah.

How did you first get interested in music?
"I started singing when I was 2 years old. I grew up listening to Mariah Carey. I'd sing along to her stuff and went on from there. I am self-taught. I've had a few lessons, but I don't really like them because they tell me how to sing. I'm like, 'This is how I sing. You can help me with the form or structure of my mouth, but you don't tell me how to sing.'"

--Donna Hewitt, a Sydney musician who will perform at Liquid Architecture, invented the eMic, which stands for extended micstand interface controller. It allows her to digitally manipulate her voice by using a joystick and sensors located on key parts of a microphone stand.

"The design was based on research I did looking at how pop singers perform and interact with the stand. So I have looked at how they tilt the stand or grip it or run their hands up and down the sides of the mic," she says. Mariah Carey, Johnny Rotten and Peter Garrett were sources of inspiration.

Mariah vs. Janet: Battle of the Comeback Queens // 8:37 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Now that Janet Jackson's beat her waistline into submission, she's ready to knock Mariah Carey off of her popstar throne.

Sources say sexy Janet, 40, who just shed 60 pounds, is pressing her brilliant music producer boyfriend Jermaine Dupri to help her top the charts again - just like he did for Mariah, 36. It was Jermaine, 32, who co-produced Mariah's The Emancipation of Mimi CD, which has sold 10 million copies worldwide. Now he's finishing Janet's new CD, 20 Years Old, her first since 2004, when she had her infamous Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction.

"Janet is feeling trim, feisty and sexy and wants to do battle with Mariah," a source tells Star People. "Janet and Mariah have had a fairly cordial relationship over the years, but make no mistake, she wants to beat Mariah at her own game. She considers Mariah her only real competition to regaining her standing as the queen of R&B music." The impending battle puts Jermaine in a tough position, the source says, "because he's such good friends with Mariah - but he goes home to Janet at night!"

As for Mariah, another source says, "Mariah thinks that if Janet can sell more records, 'God bless her.' But I think she'll believe it when it happens."

--Keane premiered its infectious new single "Is It Any Wonder?" on "The Tonight Show" following headlining guest Mariah Carey - who, as Rice-Oxley recollects it, barely noticed her co-stars, who all are well over 6 feet tall. "Mariah is one of those people who doesn't mix with the hoi-polloi too much," he laughs. "She arrived in this enormous bus ... her entire bus is like an ad, covered in artwork with a huge picture of her on the side, with one of the door handles located on her nipple. It was ... errrr ... impressive." Inside Bay Area reports.

--Mariah's performance of "Make It Happen" at Live 8 London, part of the 2005 concerts calling on the G8 leaders to do more to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty in Africa and the world's poorest countries, is one of the features on "Live 8 Concert Anniversary Video" that is available from One.org. Watch a preview of Mariah's performance. Also included in the video: Mandela, Bono on Live 8, G8 Promises; Brad Pitt, Matt Damon Visits to Africa, Live 8 concert footage, etc.

    Fans' Corner
--Tunisian fan Wiwi has recorded a Mariah tribute song entitled, "Hey Mariah! (Sing It With A High Note)" to celebrate her visit to Tunisia on July 22 & 24. An original composition, Wiwi has incorporated some of Mariah's song titles, including her 17 number ones, in the lyrics. Download and listen.

    Mentions
--From The Post Game: It's a somewhat unexpected turn of events, and one wonders how Atlanta Braves Manager Bobby Cox can even mentally prepare his team given that the last time he faced such turmoil Mariah Carey was picking up the Grammy for Best New Artist. (That's kind of shameful in itself - I think Carey's had more hits in 2006 than the bottom three in the Braves order).

--From AllHipHop: Jacob the Jeweler's signature shoes have been featured in numerous magazines and such celebrities as David Beckham, Mary J Blige, Tyrese, Mariah Carey and Jamie Foxx have worn the shoes.
