--Download a video clip (3.3MB, in MOV format) of Mariah leaving the National Hotel at around 2am to attend a post-VMA party, Sunday, August 28th.

--"If you're over 30, you know that the Video Music Awards look calamitous when they're broadcast. They also look over- packaged, with no spontaneity and little talent from the show's performers. The other night's show was so creepy that even Mariah Carey had the good sense to put on her garish, overwrought water nymph-a-thon from another location. She conveyed exactly what the VMAs felt like: You wouldn't be there if you had to," Fox News's Roger Friedman comments.

--Post-VMA chatter from Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani and Eric Henderson:

GrandmaHenderson: I'm really at a loss for the Gwen/Snoop thing. I've got nothing there.
HotSexyMusicEditor2005: i've got nothing period. i'm out of witty things to say. Green Day won a lot. Missy Elliott won too.
GH: She even beat Kanye West. That was a mild surprise
HSME2005: no mariah though. boo hoo. will the woman ever get any respek?
    GH: She just drowned.
HSME2005: she likes to splash water apparently. she thinks it's sexy and cool
GH: A beach ball would've sealed the performance.
GH: Or a set of water wings.

Click here to read the rest of the conversation.

--From MTV VMA News: It's hard to keep track of everyone's names. Just ask Brooke Hogan, who made the rounds with her family. "We went to a big party last night and we got to meet ... oh, I can't remember her name," she said. "Mom?"

"You can't remember Mariah Carey? Hello!" Linda Hogan responded. "That was the highlight of the whole weekend. She's like a princess."

--Excerpt from a review of "The Emancipation of Mimi" by the Philippine Star: "Now, Mariah has also had a good rep for having an excellent head for business, particularly in marketing herself. She is more than an artist. She knows what will sell. She has packaged a sound and a look that remains widely imitated. She knows that her fans like to listen to her sing a single syllable across several notes. She knows which artists to collaborate with. She is, however, not infallible and has made some wrong choices. But she can certainly put all that she has learned to work again and win. And won she has with her new album The Emancipation of Mimi." Read the full review here.

Alex Reports: Mariah's VMA Rehearsal // 11:21 AM EST Updated by Liron

Alex, also known as Aladerri writes:

"I went to Miami expecting to see Mariah and thanks to Mariah Daily was able to find out details about her performance. Fortunately for me, she was 2 doors down from my hotel. I went there on Saturday and got invited to attend the rehearsal.

She rehearsed 4 times on Saturday, starting at 10:00 PM. She was interrupted twice by the rain but she finally finished at about 1:00 AM. She then went inside her penthouse to change and go out.

On Sunday, she rehearsed again before the actual show at around 8:00 PM to 9:20 PM with another short blue dress. This time, the producers asked her to get inside the pool and splash some water.

She was very nice to everyone there and talked to some fans from the stage. Her performance was great! I loved the way she got it all together and the set was gorgeous! Miami was a little too hot... and with those torches, it was even hotter!

Shortly after her performance, she went back inside her hotel. At around 1:30 AM she left to a party with all her crew and her dog Jack.

Unfortunately they did not allow cameras and I was not able to take any picture of MC but I had a great time!

    -- Aladerri. "

Alex was able to take a picture with Jack and reminded us to vote for him at the Relly awards!

A Possible Duet Between Mariah and Jessica Simpson? // 4:23 AM EST Updated by Lynn

At Friday's In Touch party for Mariah at the Raleigh Hotel, the big scene was Miss Carey and Jessica Simpson hugging, chatting and generally becoming the focus of every eye and ear. Producer Jermaine Dupri - he created Carey's Sunday night National Hotel rooftop musical number - was so caught up in the Carey-Simpson gabfest he pulled out his BlackBerry to voice message himself about arranging a possible duet between the two singers, whose clothing-optional fashion sense is as impressive as their octaves. (Dupri also produced Carey's comeback CD.)

--A slew of famous faces came out for Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, and with all the commotion, there's bound to be some new hookups. So is it true that Mariah Carey got cozy with the newly-single Eddie Murphy? Yes, according to several sources and photographic evidence, the VMA vixen was whispering sweet nothings into the divorcing comic's ears.

--After winning her two Teen Choice awards for "R&B Artist" and "Love Song", Mariah admitted, "I got my two surf boards that really don't go with my award cases so I'm going to have to find a new place for them. But it's really nice, especially when the song is recognized because I don't think a lot of people realize that I'm a songwriter."

--Entertainment Tonight and E! Online want to know which VMA performance was the best. Cast your vote for Mariah by clicking on the links!

--Seventeen Magazine is asking its readers: "Do Mariah's honey-colored waves complement her complexion? Rate her look now and tell us (and everyone else) what you think." Make sure to visit Seventeen and give Mariah 5 stars!

--Rolling Stone's review of Rihanna's "Music of the Sun" album mentions Mariah: "Photogenic Rihanna suggests a young Mariah Carey minus the birdcalls, and the generic vocal hiccups and frills clearly learned from American R&B often overwhelm her Caribbean charm."

--The Philippine Mariah Carey Fanclub's (PMCF's) 3rd Year Anniversary Party was a huge success. More than 35 fans and guests attended the party last August 27th at Hobby's Bar and Resto, Makati City. Entertainment Weekly Lauds Mariah's VMA Performance // 2:32 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Best Use of a Terrible Setting.
I'm getting the impression that the Killers and Mariah Carey each did something to upset the suits at MTV. How else to explain why their respective performances were banished to Miami's finest hotel courtyards? Still, the Killers' ''Mr. Brightside'' rocked hard enough to drown out the voice in my head that fretted about those unfortunate hotel guests with Monday-morning wake-up calls. And Carey's glass-shattering range and attention-getting gams (that's how you work a look, Eva) almost made me forget about the weird scene with Jermaine Dupri happening in that nearby cabana.

From New York Times: There were elaborate water-sculptures all over the stages, too, although some artists wanted more. Mariah Carey ended her solid two-song medley by wading into a swimming pool.

From Miami Herald: With Green Day and Kelly Clarkson sucking up awards, and they, Coldplay and Mariah Carey giving some of the best performances, the evening belonged as much to rock and pop as hip-hop.

Murphy makes merry with Mariah // 6:32 AM EST Updated by Lynn

The songbird - in town for an appearance at last night's MTV awards - heard her cell phone ring while she was holding a dinner party for friends at the Raleigh Hotel's penthouse. It was newly single Murphy, demanding she come over to Prive, where the $20-million movie man was hanging out with pals Quincy Jones and Ice T and the latter's cantilevering cutie, Coco.

Carey did decide to leave her party but may have taken too long at the makeup mirror. By the time she arrived, at 2:30, Murphy had been standing at the top of the stairs for 20 minutes, with his arms folded, saying: "Where the hell is she?"

Carey, who's ditched the tube tops and two-sizes-too-small cutoffs for more sophisticaed styles, finally showed up, looking sexy and relaxed, report our spies. Both stars immediately started whispering into one another's ears and nuzzling.

Back at a banquette with pals, Murphy, also looking relaxed, "held hands with her under the table," one nearby spywitness adds.

By 3:30, the pair had slipped out the back door unnoticed (perhaps driven by a pesky drag queen named Wanda who suddenly snapped at Ice T, "Stay away from my man!"). The were holding hands as they slid into the backseat of a Mercedes, and zipped over to the five-star Hotel Setai.

Our helpful spy, who followed them, says: "They were sitting in the car 15, 20 minutes until nobody was on the street and then they went in together."

Also in today's New York Daily News
Some were also taking Mariah Carey's name in vain, as the diva ordered the storm-tossed grounds of the National Hotel turned into a stage for her VMA performance. Yes, the American Airlines Arena was apparently sufficient for all the other artists.

"She insisted upon a full-dress rehearsal, without her, on Saturday night," grumbled one guest who had his nap schedule interrupted by the sound check. "And she may be on vocal rest, but that didn't stop her drinking and partying until 3 a.m. on Friday night."

Note: The previously posted rehearsal pictures clearly contradict the New York Daily News report that Mariah was not there. Other artists like The Killers and Rihanna also performed outside the American Airlines Arena.

Katrina Can't Keep Mariah Down // 8:20 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Katrina and her waves couldn't stop the party Mariah Carey had planned on her yacht, but the weather did make the star move it. Twice.

The private event (read: no red carpet) was first scheduled to be sheltered at the Setai, and then finally found a home at the Raleigh Hotel, where revelers could enjoy the view from the penthouse balcony. It was so windy, however, that most chose to stay inside, nibbling on sashimi from Nobu and dancing to the DJ's retro playlist, which included a strange juxtaposition of New Edition's sweet "Candy Girl" with Prince's adults-only "Erotic City." Dressed in a coral Cleopatra-inspired gown, Mariah was instantly swarmed upon arriving, so she went behind the veil — a curtained-off corridor that secluded her from invited guests. Even if they didn't get to party with her, attendees got a parting gift: a bag stuffed to the brim with girlie goodies from Christian Dior, Urban Decay, and Levi's.

News Tidbits // 11:36 AM EST Updated by Lynn

--Check out Mariah on the cover and read the feature article in the Sunday, August 28 edition of the TV Guide insert in major newspapers across the U.S.

--Last night on Extra, Joe Zee, editor of Vitals magazine, promised that this year's fashions are sure to sizzle. "I think the VMAs are the most unpredictable red carpet," Zee insisted. "The VMAs will definitely be the year of the young, sexy blonde." And when it comes to sexy elegance, Zee said all eyes are on Mariah Carey. "I would really like to see her clean and simple," he said. "I think she is best that way."

--If you want to see Mariah perform live at the World Music Awards 2005 on August 31st at the Kodak Theater, Hollywood, California, free tickets are available at Iota.com.

--MTV.com gives us a look at some of this year's Video Music Award nominees and their first times on MTV. Here's what it says about Mariah: "It's hard to imagine Mariah Carey covering up most of her voluptuous bod, but that's exactly what she did for her first appearance on MTV, in the 1990 video for "Vision of Love." Dressed in a leathery leotard, Carey wore her hair in curls and looked more like a young Christina Aguilera than the Mariah we know today."

--"We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" are #6 and #10, respectively on this week's VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown.

--From New York Daily News: The rain may be coming down in Florida, but the party is going ahead tonight for Quincy Jones, who is dining with his fanciest friends (think Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, LA Reid, Lil Jon, Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, Ciara, Luke Wilson) to celebrate the W South Beach Hotel & Residences.

--In his interview with HipHop RNB Soul, Charlie Wilson, founding member/lead singer of the iconic group The Gap Band mentions Mariah. He says, "I love Mariah Carey, I would love to do a duet with her. The first time I met her was at the studio and she was doing the Emancipation... record. She was playing some things for me like "Ain't this a great song?" and I was like "Wow, maybe we should do something together" and she was like "Yeah, I would love that."

--From USA Today: On Sunday night, MTV will bestow its prized metallic moon-man statue for Video of the Year to Coldplay, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Kanye West or Snoop Dogg. Chances are, viewers who tune in to the Video Music Awards (8 p.m. ET/PT) may be more intrigued by Puffy-cum-Diddy's moniker makeover or Mariah Carey's overt exposure than any specific music video, the once-mighty art form that dominated the channel in the '80s and slipped to the fringes when reality dawned with Real World.

--From The Transcript MA: You can bet James and Dianna Amos will be watching MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday. That's because their son, Charles Amos, will be the man behind Mariah Carey's hair. It won't be the first time he has done Carey's hair. In fact, his résumé reads like a who's who of the music industry. Amos also has styled the hair of Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Jewel, Brandy, Ashanti, Lil Kim and Diana Ross to name a few.

New Voice Message From Mariah! // 4:10 PM EST Updated by Liron

Head over to Mariah's Official Site to hear a brand new voice message from her!

    Transcript:
    Hello Lambs! Yeah! Hi Lambs!

Yeah, I haven't called with a festive crowd in awhile. I feel like I've been being very bleak, very boring and I just wanted to call and ... [laughs].

I have Rachel and Tots here and also Tiffany which is Tots's dog. Can she say hi? ... She's not being very verbal today, but downstairs we have the ever popular Jack. He's in his own room, relaxing. He's recently been nominated for that Relly award, we all need to vote for him to win this. Do you know what this means to my dog?

No, but aside from all this silliness, I'm just... I haven't called on my own in a minute, just to thank you all so much for every thing and just be like.. have a celebratory moment with you guys, and really, we haven't had a "WOOOOOOOOO" [screams]. No, we really haven't even had a celebratory moment because everytime I call, it's been like in a middle of a vocal rest or whatever, quiet time, and now - not that I'm not supposed to be doing it, but I finally have these guys here with me. Only one that's not here right now is Trey and I'm gonna try to call back with him so we can get some 'Big Nasty' festivities.

But anyhoo, I just wanted to say - I love you, appreciate you and always always always enjoy you and never ever ever forget that you guys are out there making it happen and just sending you my love. Alright? And, you know, we're the cheerleaders, we are the cheerleaders, but before this message cuts off again, like it did for the last three times I tried to leave a message, I'm gonna say bye and again thank you and for real, I am so grateful to you always.

Thank you everybody for all the fanbooks, all the things you have been doing. I'm going to call you back when I can leave a calm message, without these guys here, and just let you know that I love you, love you, love you, love you, love you! Talk to you later... bye!

Still 'Together' // 4:09 PM EST Updated by Liron

  • Hello Fred!

Mariah Carey continues to be the chart phenomenon of the year, as this week she sets a new chart [record]. With "We Belong Together" in its 13th week on top of the Hot 100, she now has the longest running No. 1 single of the decade (surpassing Eminem's "Lose Yourself" and Usher's "Yeah!" with 12 weeks each).

While her run could certainly be surpassed by the end of 2009, as of now she is the only artist in Hot 100 history to have the longest running No. 1 hit of two different decades. "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men, was of course the longest running chart-topper of the '90s with 16 weeks on top.

With "Shake It Off" looking more and more like the next No. 1 single, I'm sure Mariah will continue to pop up in Chart Beat for some time to come.

    Thanks for the great column!

    Eric Colley
    Lake Mary, Fla.

  • Dear Eric,

Every once in a while there is an artist who generates chart news for weeks at a time. Elton John did it at the end of 1997 when his tribute single to Princess Diana, "Candle in the Wind 1997," was No. 1 for 14 weeks. Usher seemed to make chart news every week in 2004 and Ray Charles garnered a lot of posthumous ink last year.

Now it's Mariah Carey's turn to make a lot of chart news. The ongoing success of "We Belong Together" and the rise of "Shake It Off" have given me a lot to write about, and so has the success of her album, "The Emancipation of Mimi."

If "We Belong Togeher" is No. 1 for a 14th week, or if Mariah replaces herself at No. 1 with "Shake It Off," that will create even more Chart Beat fodder. This week's Chart Beat leads off with Mariah, and you can read that column by going here.

Katrina Plows Through Florida Cancelling VMA Parties // 7:24 AM EST Updated by Lynn

A diva named Katrina played party pooper yesterday, sinking shindigs planned by Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin and other celebrities gathered in Miami for the MTV Video Music Awards.

Hurricane Katrina made landfall in South Florida at about 7:30 p.m. near North Miami Beach, pounding the coast with torrential rain and 80 mph winds, with gusts of up to 92mph.

The hurricane was forecast to dump more than a foot of rain in some parts of South Florida, flooding out a week of parties planned around Sunday night's MTV awards.

The Port of Miami and the Port of Everglades were both closed to cruise ships yesterday, forcing Mariah Carey to cancel a party last night on a 120-foot yacht.

"Activities were suspended ... and we're monitoring the situation every hour," said MTV spokesman Graham James.

But James insisted that the awards show, which is to be hosted by Sean (Diddy) Combs, would go on.

"The awards are 100% on," James said.

But some A-listers might have trouble getting to the MTV soiree. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport was closed last night and the Miami International Airport was reporting major delays.

Some gas stations were running out of fuel because of the crush of motorists headed for higher ground. Besides flooding and falling palm trees, officials were also worried about tornadoes.

Mariah Doesn't Want To Be A Diva // 3:30 AM EST Updated by Lynn

As previously reported, Mariah is on the cover of the Summer issue of the Swedish magazine, Groove. Here are the scans of Mariah gracing the cover of Groove and the accompanying two-page interview with Mats Almegård as translated by Mariah Connection Sweden.

With the new album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," Mariah has already "revenged" her earlier flops. She also wants to show the world that she "digs" hip-hop and that she is just a regular, normal girl just like everybody else. It starts as an interrogation and it isn't me that asks the questions. Mariah Carey asks me about Sweden, my taste in music and how I'm feeling in general. After a couple of minutes I interrupt her and say that the questions should be about her music since the article is about Mariah Carey and not me.

--"Okay, I know, it's just that I'm interested you know?" she says giggling.
The interview can start. I presumed. Just as I was preparing to ask my first question, her assistant Jackie walks into the room and asks if we want to have champagne. While Jackie is pouring champagne, I start asking my first question which is interrupted when Mariah asks me to wait until we have "skåled" (cheers). Our glasses touch and she says SKÅÅLL but pulls back and says with a terrified voice:

    --"You smoke, don't you?"
When I tell her that I don't smoke but that some of the journalists in the hallway do, she relaxes and starts to tell me about her smoking days.

--"I had an ice tea in one hand and a cigarette in the other and lots of lip gloss, haha, that's probably how people remember me. I was infamous in school."
Information like this might not be interesting. But when these words come out of the mouth of someone who has been dead silent for two days straight after being interviewed to save her voice, who doesn't go on tour because that would restrain her voice, well, then it's quite interesting. The legend Tom Waits said that he smoked until he had his signature raspy voice, but who would believe that Mariah Carey, with her five-octave voice, has the ability to hit pure notes?

--"It's true, the two lowest octaves are probably there because of the smoking. But of course it's not good to smoke. I always had a cold and constant throatache. One day I promised God that if he would give me my voice back I would never smoke again. I got three octaves back after quitting."

Mats Almegård: You haven't smoked since?
Mariah Carey: "First of all I take care of my voice, second of all, I wouldn't promise God something that I wouldn't be able to keep." She grumbles a little and takes a sip of her champagne.

    MA: But you drink alcohol?
    MC: What do you mean?

MA: Doesn't alcohol dry out your vocal chords?
MC: Well, what dries the chords out isn't the... do you sing? I have a feeling that you are a singer.

    MA: What? No.
MC: OK, let's stop the tape and rewind.

The "Emancipation of Mimi" has been dubbed as Carey's comeback album. It's the second one she released via Universal after Charmbracelet which in comparison with Mariah's standards is seen as a flop (it "only" sold three million copies). We all know about her stellar career (the best selling female artist-ever), her marriage to and divorce from Tommy Mottola, the flop movie "Glitter," her breakdown, supposed suicide thoughts and her stripping in public.

Of course, with that in retrospective, the new album must feel like a revenge. Since its release, it hasn't left the top five in the States and her latest single, "We Belong Together" garnered her sixteenth US number one, only the Beatles and Elvis have more number ones than her.

And of course, these are facts that the label happily points out by giving us statistics and numbers. With all the figures in my hand, it seems like I'm going to a board meeting rather than interviewing a music artist.

MC: "I actually don't care about how much the album sells or don't sell, that is for the label to worry about, I do music!"

Mariah Carey greets me at the fancy Hyatt Regency Hotel that has a magnificent view of Cologne. She's doing her interviews in the Händel suite and in the room next door journalists are eating from the Sweet Sixteen cake that's part of the celebration for "We Belong Together." And they wait.

Three and half hours after our appointed time, I finally get to meet Mariah who's sitting surrounded by candles in a black skirt and top with butterfly shaped diamond necklace and earrings.

    Back to where we started.

Determined not to speak about scandals, but about her music, songwriting and producing skills, I enter the room. But then we got into the whole smoking thing which led to her brother and then to his girlfriend and so on and on. That's how Mariah Carey answers questions, by giving long evasive answers that touch other subjects.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" differs from her last album since it contains more party records, more hip hop and is more straight-on than what her "divorce album" Charmbracelet was. The new album starts with "It's Like That," a Missy-influenced song that invites you to a party, "I came to have a party/Open off the Bacardi", she sings.

MC: Yes, to "open off" actually means that you have already come, haha. I didn't want to be that serious this time around. I wanted to do a party record and I succeeded. I’ve gone to some clubs in the Bronx and Brooklyn, not fancy ones but more the underground clubs for hip hop lovers after the album was released. It was good to hear the DJ played 50 Cent, then "It's Like That" and then a cut from Mobb Deep. The energy on the dance floor was constant and cool. My song fit there.

It's obvious that Mariah is trying to be more "Urban" and "Black" than ever before. Just like she tried to chit-chat with me early on to show that she's not a diva. These two things are recurrent throughout the interview.

MA: Was there a good party mood during the recording process?
MC: Yes, I got to be so free. At first there were rumours that my ex-husband was going to be involved in this album and I totally freaked out. It was because of him that I left Sony in the first place, because I didn't want to work with him. I actually don't want to talk about it, but it seems that I just did haha.

MA: Yes, tell us why you felt so free in the studio then?
MC: My ex-husband didn't get involved and Antonio "LA" Reid was hired as a producer. I love all of his earlier work from TLC to Boys II Men and some other great stuff. LA is a very good drummer and an excellent producer. I played "Stay The Night" for him and LA nodded his head and said, "OK! I get what you want to do, now let's do it!" When he came along, the album just got a new life.

    MA: In what way?
MC: He believed so much in the project and that inspired me. He discovers things that other producers don't. In "Stay The Night" for example, I experimented with my voice in the background. I built a wall of sound with my voice... with some notes that were high, low and in between. He noticed that and that made me relax and trust him.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" has been recorded in seven different studios. The Nelly track "To The Floor" and "Say Somethin'" featuring Snoop Dogg were recorded in The Neptunes' studio in Hollywood.

MC: It was so much fun to record with those guys. The whole gang was in the studio and it was like during the heydays of the Motown gang; everybody singing and having a blast.

MA: But your record isn't solely party, "Fly Like a Bird" sounds more like a religious song.
MC: I'm glad that you mentioned it 'cause it's the most personal song on the entire album. When I finished it, I called my Reverend in Brooklyn from the church I used to go to. I live in Manhattan but I go to church in Brooklyn. It's not a celebrity church where you get to meet celebrities, you meet real people there.

There we are again. Mariah starts to explain how good it feels to be among "real" people but she soon notices that I'm more interested in her recording skills.

MC: Anyway, when Reverend Keaton came to the studio, he suggested a couple of quotes from the Bible that would suit the song and he chose Psalm 30:5 "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." And I put some special effects on his voice that made it sound like old school radio.

MA: You are the executive producer of the album. Do you do a lot of the technical stuff in the studio?
MC: I tell my producers to "use more compressors," "make the sound more dry" and those type of stuff. Then they do the sound work according to my wishes. I know how I want it to sound but I don't press the buttons myself. But I really live in the studio and don't like the whole diva thing where you come into the studio and sing and then leave. The songs are my babies and I want to have control over them.

MA: How do you write your songs?
MC: Usually I sing a part for the guitar, then one for the trumpet and so on and on and the person I work with plays the instrument after hearing me sing. Sometimes I write it down on the piano immediately but I don't usually like it.

    MA: Why not?
MC: The music comes to me so suddenly and the arrangements can be so difficult that I don't know how to play them on the piano. I need some really good musicians that can pull that off or the idea disappears. But "Mine Again" the track that I wrote with James Poyser... you know about his work with Jill Scott and The Roots?

    MA: Yes.
MC: Good, we did it old school. We sat by the piano and he played the keys in which I sang. He's so skilled that he can pull it off fast. He has his roots in church music and jazz which really are my styles. And hip hop and R&B of course. I've written a lot of songs on the piano by myself, songs like "Vision of Love" and "All I Want For Xmas Is You" which I wrote by using a small Casio-keyboard.

MA: Is it different with The Neptunes?
MC: Yes, they are responsible for making the song, but I want to be in the studio and choose how the chords follow after each other and that it's in the right key. I decide the different necessary switches that we have to make. With Jermaine Dupri it's usually the same thing, I sing a loop and he creates a beat and we take it from there.

MA: Do you write your lyrics yourself?
MC: I used to do it 'cause those that I used to work with got on my nerves. When I would write serious lyrics they would try to joke about it. The fact is, I only started writing with other people when I started to do more hip hop-oriented stuff. Rappers come up with lines that I wouldn't think of or dare to say myself haha. On the new album there are some serious songs that I've written myself.

Jackie walks in and lets me know that the half hour has passed. Mariah looks at me with her big deer-like eyes and asks me if I've gotten what I need for the article. Then she adds that I seem to be a nice person. A last attempt to try and rub off the diva rumours? I almost expect hip hop slang from her as well. But she senses that the message has been received.

Lucky Number: "We Belong Together" Breaks Records // 12:41 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (Island) hits the 13-week mark as the No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. It's the first song to rule for 13 weeks in seven years. In fact, it was exactly seven years ago this week that Aerosmith debuted at the summit, ending the 13-week reign of Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine."

"We Belong Together" is in elite territory, as only eight songs in the rock era have been No. 1 for 13 weeks or longer. Carey is also just the second artist to have two songs or more on this short list. Her collaboration with Boyz II Men on "One Sweet Day" is the longest-running No. 1 of the rock era with 16 weeks on top.

Four songs were in lead position for 14 weeks: "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston, "I'll Make Love to You" by Boyz II Men, "Macarena" (Bayside Boys Mix)" by Los Del Rio and "Candle in the Wind 1997" / "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" by Elton John.

Completing the list of eight are the songs with 13-week reigns: "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men, "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy and Monica and "We Belong Together" by Carey.

The long visit of "We Belong Together" at No. 1 brings Carey even closer to matching Elvis Presley's total weeks on top. Carey has now been No. 1 for 74 weeks, just five weeks shy of Presley's record 79 weeks. With the follow-up to "We Belong Together" rising 6-4, "Shake It Off" could be the song that ties or surpasses Presley's record.

The Hot 100 isn't the only chart where Carey generates news this week. "We Belong Together" remains No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the 14th week, equalling the record for most weeks on top since the chart was re-instated in January 1965 after a 14-month hiatus. "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" by Deborah Cox was also No. 1 for 14 weeks, from November 1998 to February 1999.

Carey is unlikely to best Cox, as she will probably be replaced with Bow Wow and Ciara (5-2 with "Like You") or herself (10-3 with "Shake It Off").

DUPRI'S PRIZE: The songs have aligned in the right positions to give Jermaine Dupri a unique achievement on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. With Carey's "We Belong Together" at No. 1, followed by Bow Wow and Ciara's "Like You" and Carey's "Shake It Off," Dupri is the first artist in modern chart history to produce the top three songs on the chart.

No Budging Mariah's 'Together' At No. 1 // 12:14 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" continues its summer domination, as it begins its 13th non-consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and a 14th straight in control of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

But as was the case last week, Carey may prove to be her own best challenger for those chart thrones. Her track "Shake It Off" jumps 6-4 on the Hot 100 and 10-3 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and is the greatest airplay gainer on both tallies. On the Pop 100, "Together" holds at No. 3, while "Shake It Off" inches up 15-13.

With "Together" ruling the Hot 100, the Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" featuring Busta Rhymes begins a third week at No. 2, followed by Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" at No. 3 and Bow Wow's "Let Me Hold You" at No. 5. On the Pop 100, "Don't Cha" is No. 1 for a fifth-straight frame.

VMA Weekend Is All About Parties // 6:38 PM EST Updated by Lynn

Sunday night's VMA Awards on MTV, live from the Triple A, is starting to sound like a sideshow. Maybe the parties hosted by celebs are really what it's all about. There'll be close to sixty of those in and around Miami Beach, two of which will be hosted by Mariah.

    Friday, August 26th
Mariah Carey is hosting the In Touch gossip magazine get-together on a yacht.

    Sunday, August 28th

Carey again shows she belongs // 3:23 PM EST Updated by Liron

Hitting the top of the music charts again can be sweeter than the first time.

    Mariah Carey is living proof.

As a sign of her resurgence with the album "The Emancipation of Mimi" and the single "We Belong Together," the high-note-hitting singer will be among the performers at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. The music channel televises the event Sunday from Miami's American Airlines Arena at 8 p.m.

Diddy, the latest name being used by Sean Combs, will serve as host; other artists set to perform include R. Kelly, Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, Green Day, the Killers, Shakira and Ludacris.

    A "thrilling" resurgence

Carey enters this year's VMAs with two bids for "We Belong Together" (best female video and best R&B video), but Green Day tops the nominee list with eight bids. Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott follow with six each, and U2 has five.

The ultimate contest - video of the year - is between Coldplay (for "Speed of Sound"), Green Day ("Boulevard of Broken Dreams"), Stefani ("Hollaback Girl"), Kanye West ("Jesus Walks") and Snoop Dogg featuring Pharrell ("Drop It Like It's Hot").

However she may fare at the 2005 VMAs, Carey feels great these days, and why not? Her trademark sound on "We Belong Together," her 16th song to hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, has made it the most successful single in the history of the Island Def Jam Music Group. And "The Emancipation of Mimi" has gone triple-platinum in sales since its release in April.

Add her much-noted showcase with an African children's chorus at the recent Live 8 concert in London, and it has been quite a summer and year for Carey.

"It is a complete and total thrill," she says from Germany while on a concert and promotion tour. "The first week [of the album's release], I was like, 'Wow, OK, this is my biggest first week ever,' and that was amazing. You know that you'll usually go right from No. 1 to No. 22, and that would have been all right.

"It still would have been a triumph for me, and I would have been ecstatic with what had happened, but the consistency [of the album's sales] is what's really been making me feel proud. This record really represents who I am. I feel like I took a lot of flack for a long time for doing this or that, but it was all what's in my heart."

    Back at MTV

After performing earlier this summer at the MTV Movie Awards, Carey is glad to return to the channel. "With the people who work there, it's not like dealing with people who aren't young and creative and innovative," she reflects. "They deal with visuals constantly, and it was my manager Benny Medina's idea to do a 'Sin City'-esque color scheme for 'We Belong Together' on the movie awards. I got a lot of compliments on it, even though I can't really take any credit for it."

However, Carey does accept credit for the hugely romantic post-breakup tune "We Belong Together," despite being amused when people deem it to be in the tradition of many other Carey hits.

"It's funny, because 'Always Be My Baby' was the first song I ever wrote with Jermaine Dupri [also a 'We Belong Together' co-author], who is primarily a hip-hop producer. It became one of my biggest records, and this song has totally eclipsed that. I had hopes for it, but never did I think it would become the biggest song of my career. It's a very huge blessing, and I'm very happy it's with Jermaine. He understands and knows me as a friend as well as an artist."

    Shaking it off

To have such a level of success again, Carey attests, "makes you appreciate that much more when you go through difficult times. You embrace the fact you're having that kind of moment, and you accept it and deal with it and center yourself. That's what I did, and it felt like I was getting back to that spiritual place where I was before I ever put a record out, the faith that I had in myself.

"I had to put aside losing all the fanfare and the hype and whatever negative things people had to say. Not to use the title of one of my songs, but I had to 'Shake It Off' literally and fully get into the music."

The approach clearly paid off for Carey, who stresses, "The fact that people have embraced the record means that much more to me. It's a wonderful feeling of validation. The first time I had success, of course, it was amazing whenever I'd hear one of my songs on the radio. I didn't really experience it fully, though.

"Even that first year when I went to the Grammys and won," Carey says, "it was like living somebody else's life. It was all so surreal and it all happened so fast, but now, I know to take things in and enjoy them and be grateful."

'Mimi' To Fight For #1 Next Week // 3:05 PM EST Updated by Liron

One-Day Sales: We’re now in the throes of one of the summer’s deadest weeks, so this is gonna be a short one, kiddies.

Without a doubt, the week’s highest-charting debut will be from Koch’s Jim Jones, a member of the Diplomats posse, who’s rhyming his way toward 65k-70k. For the inevitable Kool-Aid joke, see yesterday’s chart story.

With no six-figure bow in the picture, the fight for next week’s #1 will likely pit two extremely familiar names: Island/IDJ diva Mariah Carey, whose comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi is one of the year’s handful of bona fide bright spots, and Capitol’s Now 19, which conveniently packages the biggest hits from recent months.

Carey has consistently run up weekly totals north of 100k (she did 109k this week, good for #3), and Now (which landed in the #4 spot on 107k) still has some life left in it. So those two will likely best this week’s #1, Hollywood’s Hilary Duff (200k this week), and #2, Arista Nashville’s Brad Paisley (197k), assuming the typical 50%-60% decline from week one to week two. Then again, what the hell do we know?

The First Vote Is In // 11:36 AM EST Updated by Liron

  • Hi there,

I was just wondering if Mariah Carey's new song "Shake It Off" can top the charts, and shake off all competition including herself, or will her "We Belong Together" keep it from peak position?

Another question is, how do the Grammy Awards get tallied? Are they [based] on album sales and chart positions, etc.? What are Mariah's chances of winning Grammys for best album, best song and best artist, etc.? She deserves it and so much more -- it would be quite surprising if she doesn't win Grammys for her amazing new material.

    Thank you for your time.

    Kind regards,

    Norman Mellett
    South Africa

  • Dear Norman,

As you've probably seen by now, Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off" (Island) has continued to rocket up the Billboard Hot 100, this week leaping 12-6. That makes it a strong contender to take over the top spot from Carey's preceding single, "We Belong Together."

Members of the Recording Academy vote for the Grammys. Their votes are not based on sales or chart positions. This is an awards show based on the music, so the voting is purely subjective. Academy members can't help but be influenced by records that have sold well and charted in high positions, but theoretically a brilliant album that didn't sell should be rewarded over an average album that sold a lot of copies.

I do expect to see Mariah on the list of nominees, but I won't predict beyond that. Just thinking of female artists, it's been a highly competitive year, with releases by Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson and Carey obvious choices for nominations.

Note: Fred Bronson refers to the Billboard chart of August 27th where "Shake It Off" climbed from #12 to #6 on the Hot 100. New Billboard chart positions will be released tonight.

"We Belong Together," The Jam of Summer 2005 // 10:28 AM EST Updated by Lynn

It's August in Detroit, and things are about where they usually are. The Lions are finishing up training camp, the Tigers are fighting for .500, and the three-digit heat index is a certified bear. Musically, windows are down, systems are up, and everyone's jamming to ... Doug FM? WTF? Around the corner from Labor Day, and no completely inescapable, dumps-like-a-truck Summer Jam?

A grown-up take on the playground throwdown, Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" definitely wins the prize for catchphrase of the summer. But its Neptunes-supplied fife and drum corps beat is way too polarizing. It might sit high on Billboard's Hot 100, but "Hollaback" won't bust through to the wedding reception set.

And that's just one place a true Summer Jam must go. Receptions, christenings, nursing home dayrooms - sure, the track starts its reign in the club, but it rises to power with the people. That's why classic summer songs are always pop-oriented. On the surface they're sexified: "Crazy in Love" and "Hot in Herre;" even Will Smith's bright plastic "Miami" brought some sweaty exuberance to 1998. But underneath the hot and bother they're custom-built for mass appeal. In 2003, the hard-blowing horn sample from "Crazy in Love" was like being ass-whipped by a giant exclamation point. It didn't matter if you were Shawn Carter or Jimmy Carter — Beyoncé reduced you to a frothy mess.

But that's so two years ago. In 2005 radio is a non-factor in breaking singles. Locally, 93.1 is history, replaced by a numbing khaki robot named Doug. And despite strong ratings for Clear Channel's Channel 95.5 and FM 98 WJLB, neither station is spinning anything with truly visceral, lasting appeal. And in that, Mimi might save the day.

Admit it: Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" is the jam of summer 2005. The second single from Emancipation of Mimi climbed steadily at Billboard, just like Mariah's singles used to do, and as of Aug. 18th it was number one on the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

You obviously agree that it's a great song, but if radio's a non-factor then the charts are irrelevant. We all know it's the intangibles that make a summer single anyway, those untraceable currents that grab the heart and feet, and despite not being an anthem, "We Belong Together" is that rousing. It's straightforward, heartfelt and classy.

Mariah pleads with her departed lover - "When you left I lost a part of me/It's still so hard to believe" - and the song's gentle R&B roll is perfectly understated, built from a few piano chords and a slowed-down So So Def rhythm. (It was co-written and produced by Jermaine Dupri.) It has a homebody quality, almost like an autumn song would - you can imagine a split-up couple singing it quietly, separately, as the world goes on around them. She's on a porch with tea; he's stuck in traffic when he finds Mariah on the radio. It even cleverly references that feel, with Mariah finding the Bobby Womack and Babyface songs on her radio just too tough to hear. There's no tired "I tried to 2-way you" retorts, no trash-technology love affair "I was at the grocery store and this guy had the same ring tone as you, and I cried."

No, there's a classic sensibility to the lyrics and sound of "We Belong Together" that makes for perfect - and perfectly universal - pop/R&B songwriting. In other words, it's the jam. And there's probably a happy ending, too: Mariah's triumphant octave shift finale makes the song's title an emphatic. Besides, in the video she decides against marrying old-ass Eric Roberts, and that's a huge plus. No one would've danced at that reception.

Frankie is a fan, telling her she "makes it look effortless."

Mariah Gets It 'Together' // 8:35 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey has the No. 1 single in the country. Ten years ago, this wouldn't have been big news; now it's nothing short of a miracle.

''We Belong Together" has been Billboard's top single for a staggering 12 weeks, making it not only one of Carey's biggest hits, but the biggest song - so far - of the year. And it's all the more remarkable since Carey's career was supposed to be over. After spending the 1990s becoming one of the best-selling female artists in pop music history, Carey, it seemed, couldn't do anything right by the start of the 21st century. Her once-unstoppable career became a punchline as she suffered professional and personal misfires.

Hence, few expected Carey to return to chart-topping form when her latest CD, ''The Emancipation of Mimi," was released in April. Yet, not only did Carey's album, her first studio effort in three years, drop-kick 50 Cent's ''The Massacre" out of the top spot, it garnered the best first week sales - 404,000 - of Carey's career.

Not many performers achieve landmarks so deep into their careers. Carey, what with all her issues and antics, certainly seemed an unlikely candidate. Still, she did what few entertainers do when their careers are flailing -- she returned to what made her a star.

Certainly, it's helped that she's had the guiding hand of her label chief, Island Def Jam's Antonio ''LA" Reid. An established hitmaker, Reid has worked with artists from Usher to Pink, and understands how to polish his singers to their commercial best. ''We Belong Together" is a classic Carey ballad: slickly produced, a little overwrought, but sung to pieces. Whatever problems Carey has endured, her voice has remained pure, a stunning instrument which has often been better than her chosen material.

Her new album also steps away from the adult contemporary pretensions of 2002's inert ''Charmbracelet." She's back to hip-hop influenced R&B, and the collaborations here with Snoop Dogg and the Neptunes don't sound forced since Carey has been doing this sort of thing for a decade.

True, she hasn't dropped her tendency to vamp it up too much in her videos, as if she still feels the need to compete with the Beyonces and Ameries of the world. But Carey can easily out-sing them all. She doesn't need to wear thigh-high skirts (although she does) or strike seductive poses in a rose-petal adorned bathtub (although she does that, too), when that voice is really all she needs.

It's a big turnaround from a slide that began with ''Glitter" in 2001. A loosely autobiographical debacle that marked - like a dog marks its territory - Carey's big-screen debut. Suffice it to say that as an actress, she's a wonderful singer. Then again, this film was so lousy in every possible way, even the most seasoned thespian couldn't have made the whole mess watchable. Even Carey's most rabid fans stayed far, far away.

Consequently, the accompanying soundtrack didn't do much better, but by then more people were paying attention to Carey's public unraveling. She made a wacky appearance on MTV's ''Total Request Live," and not long after there came reports that she'd been hospitalized for the oft-cited ''exhaustion."

A year later, Carey's label, Virgin Records, which had giddily signed the singer to an $80 million contract, became so desperate to dump her and her flagging sales, they gave her a $28 million buyout. For all intents and purposes, Carey was regarded as damaged goods, her career adrift. Oh, she would still sell records, but many believed she was well past her peak.

Even as the singer was trying to sort it out, contemporary R&B was being overrun by younger women who certainly didn't have Carey's voice, but were equipped with the kind of video-primed looks that can just as reliably launch a career.

But there's nothing like a hit record to chase those blues - and poseurs - away. Perhaps finally understanding that she has nothing left to prove, she was free to make the right album at the right time. Even if you aren't a Carey fan, there's something reassuring about a 35-year-old singer experiencing a career resurrection at a time when women too young to drink are dominating modern R&B.

Adding to what's already been a spectacular year, Carey will vie for best female video for ''We Belong Together" at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, and expect her album and single to get major attention when the Grammy nominations are announced later this year. Her latest single, ''Shake It Off" is already in the top 10, while ''Mimi" remains near the top of the Billboard 200 album chart.

This from a singer who was all but declared professionally dead. Instead, Carey is having the last laugh, with a hot album and a hot single as a diva risen from the ashes. Somewhere out there, Whitney Houston had better be taking notes.

Eric Roberts, King of the Video Music Awards // 8:09 AM EST Updated by Lynn

If you know that face but can't quite place the name, the blue-eyed, weather-worn actor on your TV screen would like to remind you that he was navigating the treacherous waters of Hollywood before you were born. Ask your parents, and they'll tell you that Eric Roberts has been called a lot of things in his 50 years: rugged leading man, Oscar-nominated thespian, straight-to-video C-lister, brother of Hollywood's most famous woman, father of two rising stars. Now he's reinvented himself once again with another title: King of the Video Music Awards.

"So I go up this winding staircase in this trailer, and I get up there and I see her on the bed having her feet rubbed," Roberts recently remembered of his first meeting with Mariah Carey. "And she motions for me to come on over, and I walk down the length of this trailer, which is basically - the upstairs is all bedroom. I walk down the length of her bedroom; she pats the bed. I sit down, and she sends her little foot masseuse away, and we talked about the video. And she says how she saw me in the Killers video. She was very complimentary. For anybody unhappily married, it would have been a fantasy come true."

Roberts, if you haven't already figured it out, is the grim-faced millionaire staring down Mariah and subsequently being left at the altar in the two-part miniseries of "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together." He's also the similarly wealthy (and similarly grim), apple-throwing velvet-robe enthusiast in the Killers' "Mr. Brightside" video.

"I'm in three videos that have six nominations," Roberts beamed when asked about this month's VMAs, which he plans to attend in support of the two musical acts. "But I was just a tool. The [videos] that got the nominations are the bands and the directors, and they deserve them. These are formidable people who are great at what they do, and they just told me where to stand and what to do, and told me to be sexy and stuff like that."

Whatever Roberts is doing, it's working, as he has suddenly become the go-to supporting actor for musicians looking to convey affluence, sex appeal and/or a tangible sense of sliminess. For the veteran actor, any fears of typecasting have been overcome by the opportunity to introduce himself to a younger generation.

"The Mariah Carey video guy was also a very wealthy man, probably much more wealthy than the Killers guy, and probably through mostly legitimate means. He also felt the presence of another man, but he thought he could overcome it by being a gentleman, but he couldn't. Which just goes to show you," he laughed.

The other videos were "a whole other beast, because Mariah is a superstar," he added. "Mariah came and talked to me about marriage and things, and about the video itself, and about my lovely wife, and about her three-story trailer."

Roberts is looking forward to the Video Music Awards, but claims he's been little more than a lucky charm for the two acts. "It's always nice to have your name mentioned at awards ceremonies," grinned Eric Roberts, the win-or-lose king of this year's VMAs. "I would love that, [but] I don't expect that. I was just a hired hand who had a good time."

--Mariah is #7 on Blender's Hot 100. Here's what Blender has to say about Mariah: "Completing the return journey from punch line to pop princess when, a couple of years back, Blender dressed cover star Mariah Carey in leather to evoke a Comeback Special-era Elvis, the chances of her ever actually achieving a career turnaround seemed slim, given the fallout from her movie fiasco, Glitter. Yet 2005 has seen the diva do just that, thanks to a newly restrained vocal style and some sublime R&B songwriting: The Jermaine Dupri co-penned "We Belong Together" became the singer's sixteenth No. 1. Only the Beatles and, yes, Elvis, can claim more."

--Mariah's dog, Jack has been nominated for a Relly Award (Regis and Kelly) under Best Non-Human Guest! --Mariah received the greatest buzz score in yesterday's Yahoo! Buzz, sealing the #1 spot on Top 20 Music Searches and placing at #2 on Top 20 Overall Searches charts.

--From The New York Times: "Let Me Hold You," a collaboration between the singer Omarion and the rapper Bow Wow sneaked up the pop charts and stuck around near the top; in a less competitive season - one without Mariah Carey, say - it could have been a candidate for song of the summer. As it is, it's just another delectable also-ran.

--Lora and Steve are inviting fans to send in their entries for a World Fan Book they are making to help celebrate the success of the album, "The Emancipation of Mimi." David Morales: "Mariah's No Diva" // 8:33 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Ibiza revellers could be in for a treat this summer if David Morales gets his way. The DJing, remixing and producing legend is hoping that his singing pal Mariah Carey will make it over to the White Isle for an exclusive guest appearance.

He said: "She wants to do it. We're discussing right now the possibility of her performing with me in Ibiza this summer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can make it happen. She's brilliant."

"Mariah's a great woman. I remixed her last single It's Like That and we've been working together for 12 years."

As for claims Mariah's a diva, David's not so sure.

"Is she a snob? No. Is she someone that likes things the way she does, cause she can afford to? Why not?" he said. "What woman isn't a diva? You don’t have to be famous to be a diva. You can be a diva in your own house."

"She might have flowers, candy, honey in her dressing room ... I'm sure she never started that way. But it's no different to when I work in a club and people ask what I want and I say food, soda, bottle of champagne. Being a diva means mistreating people and being nasty and treating people like slaves. That's what a diva is."

After working with the superstar for years David revealed that she's a wonder to work with. He said: "I've never seen Mariah be unkind to anyone. She's the best person I’ve worked with on remixes. She's the one that I’ve spent the most time with."

Let's Stay 'Together' // 12:59 PM EST Updated by Liron

Mariah Carey is just one week away from tying the modern record for the longest-running No. 1 hit on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. "We Belong Together" (Island) is in its 13th week on top. If Carey can keep it "Together" for one more week, she will tie the 14-week record set by Deborah Cox in 1998 with "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here."

The Cox song is the longest-running No. 1 since 1955. At 13 weeks, "We Belong Together" is tied for second place with a single from 1956, "Honky Tonk (Parts 1 & 2)" by Bill Doggett.

"We Belong Together" is Carey's most successful R&B single by far. "Fantasy" is in second place, with six weeks at the summit in 1995. "Together" is the sixth R&B No. 1 of 2005. Only one other of the six remained on top for more than four weeks: Mario's "Let Me Love You" dominated the list for 11 weeks.

Mariah Carey, The Good Kind of Crazy // 12:02 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    The Emancipation of Mariah
With more number-one hits than any other female artist, a new sense of freedom, and lots of diamonds, Mariah Carey finally feels like herself. By Kevin Sessums

A "No Moleste" sign is hanging from the doorknob of the suite on one of the highest floors of the New York Palace Hotel, where Mariah Carey has taken up residence. Should I knock? Although it is 5 o'clock in the afternoon, the Dusky Diva was up late the night before celebrating the birthday of L.A. Reid, CEO of Island Def Jam Music. Ignoring the sign, I decide to take a chance. I know Carey is fond of rappers, but I rap the only way an effete white boy knows how to rap - with my knuckles.

A barefoot maid answers the door and escorts me to a private elevator, which takes us to the floor above. Braless and barefoot, Carey swans into the room in a floral chiffon halter dress. Her makeup is impeccable, and her blonde streaked hair is perfectly straight. She extends her freshly manicured hand, and as I bow to kiss it, I try unsuccessfully not to stare directly at her ample décolletage.

Carey offers me a soda, pours one for herself, and invites me to sit close by her on the sofa. The 35-year-old star tucks her bare feet beneath the flowing chiffon and confesses that she hardly slept after Reid's birthday party. He is responsible for The Emancipation of Mimi, the first album in her $20 million deal with Island Def Jam. This particular week, the CD has again reached the number-one spot in the country, along with the single "We Belong Together." It is her sixteenth number-one song, making her the top-selling female vocalist in the history of the music business: Only the Beatles and Elvis Presley have had more number-one hits. "Mariah and I laugh when people call this her comeback, says Randy Jackson, one of the American Idol judges, who has produced tracks on all of Carey's ten studio albums. "Her comeback from where? She's never really been away. Not since Nat King Cole has there been a tone quite like hers - that sweet, buttery sound. And, dawg, Nat King Cole didn't have her seven-octave range."

Jackson and Carey can laugh all they want at the term "comeback," but how else is one to describe the current state of her life and career after the public debacle of her movie Glitter, which was released on September 11, 2001, and the emotional meltdown that landed her in a couple of hospitals? When I bring this up, her husky giggle lingers way down in one of those lower octaves of hers, and she fidgets with her giant heart-shaped diamond earrings. A diamond butterfly ring - its size somewhere between a monarch and Mothra - flickers on her finger. "Those can't be real," I say, pointing at the earrings.

"Yes, they are," she says. "I gave these to myself." Given her estimated fortune of $300 million, and the fact that she's had few serious romantic relationships, this makes sense.

"Is that real also?" I ask, eyeballing the butterfly on her finger. "Yes. Yes it is, " she says. "And how about those?" I ask, pointing toward her cleavage.

Carey erupts into laughter. "All my jewels are here to be admired," she says. Her breathy voice cuts through the laughter. In fact, Carey's voice and childlike demeanor owe a bit to Marilyn Monroe, whom the singer idolizes. "I have Marilyn Monroe's piano," she says. "It's a white baby grand. It's chipped and stuff. I tried to have it tuned, but it's from 1937, and it's not about tuning it. It's about having it. It's in storage because of all the water damage in my apartment. I've rented a house in L.A. until further notice. And while I'm in New York, I'm living here at the Palace," she notes, with an edge in her voice that proves she's in on the joke about the up-and-down fairy-tale quality of her life.

While some people may believe in her "Once Upon a Time" life, Carey's true friends know otherwise. "After the party last night, I drove around Harlem with [rapper] Cam'ron in his Lamborghini, and we talked about life and love and different things. The people I bond with are people who have been through some stuff and gotten through some difficulties as opposed to a white-picket-fence person," she says. My friends have all been through some type of intensity, some type of adversity, some type of obstacle that they've had to overcome. And most of the guys I know who are in hip-hop have dealt with that. Someone asked if it bothered me that people think I had this fairy-tale existence when in reality my childhood, to put it mildly, was difficult," she says. Growing up on Long Island, the family's cars were torched and family pets were poisoned because her mother was white and her father was black. Her parents divorced when she was three years old. Her mother had dreams of being an opera star but never made a consistent living, and they moved 13 times before she graduated from high school. She skipped school so often that her friends started calling her "Mirage" Carey. "But I am a totally free spirit today because I grew up around a mother who is so artsy," she says now. "I also had to be a little adult very early in my life. When something happened, it always fell to me to make the phone call for help. I don't like to get too specific about some of this stuff because my family can get a little touchy. Let's just say there's a lot of dichotomy in my life, and I've learned to accept that that's what makes me who I am. That's what connects me to a lot of my audience. So many biracial kids tell me how much my songs mean to them, because they didn't feel like they fit in, but now they have something to aspire to. That's the way I felt as a kid - that feeling of not fitting in."

Did the light-skinned Carey ever want to be darker? "I just wanted to be one thing or the other. I'd be at my cousin's in the South Bronx, and the kids outside would be, "That ain't yo' cuzzin. She's white." And in the meantime, I really didn't look white to white people," she says. "If I would go places with my father, there would always be someone with a sneer or an expression of disgust."

Carey had problems with other family members as well. A few years ago, her older sister, Alison, allegedly tried to sell a less-than-flattering book about her life with Mariah. The star is, however, still close to her mother, Patricia, and her older brother, Morgan, who is a trainer and kickboxer in Los Angeles. Her father, Alfred, recently died of cancer. "It was horrible what he went through," Carey says. "I was so glad I got to spend time with him before he died and talk through our stuff. I never knew how many things he had saved from my childhood - things I had made for him when I was three - sentimental pictures and things he gave back to me." She stops for a second and gathers her dress around her bare legs in a more ladylike fashion. "When he was in the hospital he wanted my sister and I to reunite. We were often there at the same time so... ahhh... we reconnected at that point. Some things are just better left at a distance."

Carey is patient and calm while talking about her painful issues with Alison. When I asked about her sister's claim that she became a prostitute to pay for Mariah's demo tape, Mariah sighs deeply before answering. "Whatever anybody does, they do for their own reasons. And I'm not commenting on her by saying that. I'm just bein' real. But my brother paid for my first demo tape. Five thousand dollars. That was a lot of money for us back then. Please, lamb, let's change the subject."

    "OK. Tommy Mottola."

"Oh, God!" she says, rolling her eyes and letting loose with her laugh. "From bad to worse."

That demo tape famously found its way into the hands of Mottola, the future head of Sony Entertainment. Mottola and Carey started a professional relationship, then a personal one (despite a 20-year age difference) that culminated in a huge New York City wedding in 1993 after the record mogul divorced his longtime wife. The wedding was a star-studded, over-the-top event - Carey wore a $25,000 dress with a 27-foot train - but the problems started as soon as the honeymoon. "It was awful," she says. "It was a horrid honeymoon. I ended up crying on the beach by myself... Tommy was the first person I was ever with sexually, though I wasn't a virgin on our wedding night. I didn't know he was married when I met him, either." The two were together for eight years and married for four before she gained the courage to seek a divorce. But there had to have been some good times during those years, right? "There were happy moments, like when one of my videos would come on," she deadpans. Any regrets that she and Tommy didn't have kids? "No! No! No! It wasn't the right thing for me to have kids with him. I'm eternally 12. I'm not ready to have kids."

Carey pauses. "There was already an element of the parental in my relationship with Tommy. But more than the parental, there was the stability he offered me, which represented something I never really had in life. He offered me a home - not that Sing Sing mansion," she says, using her nickname for the $10 million fortress the couple built in Bedford, New York, where she felt like a prisoner who had to do just that - sing and sing - in order to pay her share. "Tommy was someone who totally believed in me. I needed that. But the authoritarian aspect of the Regime," as she calls Mottola and his lieutenants at Sony Music, "was already in place when I married into it all. It was next to impossible to extract myself from that." Carey's voice turns jittery, making it sound as if she had been kidnapped rather than married. "I longed for someone to come kidnap me back then. I used to fantasize about that. A lot. I'd have my pocketbook with me at all times in case I had to make an escape - it's a big accomplishment that I don't feel the need to have it anymore. I used to think maybe there could be a kidnapper who could rescue me, and he wouldn't be that mean."

A kidnapper did not arrive, but once she was separated from Mottola, Carey was rescued, in a sense, by New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter, a kind of knight-in-shining-pinstripes. "Derek was a very nice transitional figure in my life, definitely necessary in pushing me to extract myself from the other relationship because... well, let's put it this way: If you don't know there's something else out there, then you're content to deal with what you have." I ask it it's true that, since the Declaration of Independence states that we are "endowed by God," Jeter was more endowed than others, Carey whoops with delight. "Oh, my goodness!" she squeals, and then collects herself. "No comment, dahhhling," she purrs. "Put it just like that. And make sure 'dahhhling' is spelled d-a-h-h-h-l-i-n-g."

Carey is able to joke about her past, enjoy her present, and have hope for her future (she's even planning a Broadway musical based on her best-selling Christmas album). She prefers to call her breakdown a few years ago a "breakthrough." At one point, she was in danger of being grouped with Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston as superstars whose careers twisted into cautionary tales. When I compare her with them and their own downfalls, she goes silent for a few moments. "To go through what I went through so publicly was the first time I felt famous," she finally says. "I never felt it before I felt the downside of fame. Yeah, that time was difficult for me. Everybody knows it now. But I got through it." Carey says it is an amazing moment in her life to have the number-one album and the number-one single at the same time. "It's crazy. Good crazy," she is quick to point out. "You know sometimes you're with a really famous person and you go, 'Where are they?'" She stops and waves her hand in front of my face to illustrate her point. "It's as if their fame has come to define them. The difference with me, I hope, is that I never let that 'Mariah Carey' thing overtake me, and I never think of myself as that other person. It's an interesting phenomenon. I really want to write a book someday, especially now that I understand some shit," she says. Once more, Carey checks out that butterfly on her finger she bought for herself. The ring may catch the light, but it is the hard-earned sparkle in her eyes these days that leaves the lasting impression.

Carey's 'Together' Notches 12 No. 1 Weeks // 12:38 PM EST Updated by Liron

  • Of the 20 weeks Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" has been on the Billboard Hot 100, a dozen have now been spent in the No. 1 position. The track's reign was interrupted for just one frame, thanks to the strong entry of Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven" in June, but it has otherwise ruled the roost all summer.

On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the cut enters its 13th straight week on top, while the title is also No. 1 on the Hot Ringtones tally for a fourth.

After holding off various challengers, the strongest competition for “Together” may come from another Carey single. On the Hot 100, her "Shake It Off" advances 12-6 in its fifth week and is the chart's greatest airplay gainer. On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop list, it jumps 14-10, while on the Pop 100, where former No. 1 "Together" holds at No. 3, "Shake" rattles 21-15. "Shake" is also bounding up the Hot Digital Tracks chart, advancing 36-23 in its second week.

With "Together" locked at No. 1 on the Hot 100, the Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" featuring Busta Rhymes has to settle for a second week at No. 2, followed by Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" at No. 3 and Bow Wow's "Let Me Hold You" at No. 4. On the Pop 100, "Don't Cha" is No. 1 for a fourth week, while "Replay" repeats itself in the top slot of the Hot Digital Tracks list.

  • Meanwhile, a 4% gain to 103,000 units is not enough to prevent a 3-4 fall for Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/Def Jam).

More Photos From B96 Party // 2:47 PM EST Updated by Liron

Frank writes: "I met Mariah for the third time at B96's "Mariah's Mansion Party" on Friday the 12th. There were 700 people in attendance so I was very lucky to talk my way into the VIP where she only gave about 30 photos to B96 employees that were lucky enough to get that far. I have a picture of just Mariah and I from the event, but the ones below give you a better feel of what was going on. We only talked for a few moments as the crowd was absolutely insane... And I'm talking about the B96 professionals that were supposed to act civilized. I was told the "listener crowd" upstairs went crazy when she only went up there to say "Hello Chicago, are you having a good time?". She hosted the party for B96 staff and listeners to show appreciation for the new album's success. B96 has been a long time supporter of her music."

Mariah on Vibe's 'Juice' List // 11:57 PM EST Updated by Lynn

In the September 2005, 12th Anniversary Juice Issue of Vibe, Mariah is ranked #43 in the magazine's 100 Hottest People, Places, and Things (page 168).

    In Celebration of Mimi
We pay homage to the zany diva with the multi-octave range and impeccable songwriting skills by remembering Mariah Carey's 10 juiciest moments.

  • Mariah announces her split from Tommy Mottola in 1997, ending what she calls a "stifling" marriage. No wonder the songstress dubbed their Bedrofd, N.Y., mansion "Sing Sing."

  • In the 1997 video for "Honey," a newly unattached Madame Butterfly, wearing Gucci stilettos and a killer cream Bond-girl bikini top, struts the stuff Mottola supposedly tried so desperately to keep under wraps.

  • MC and Derek Jeter set the tabloids ablaze with their sizzling 1997-'98 romance. The relationship strikes out after less than a year.

  • A year later, she steals Mexican balladeer Luis Miguel's corazón. They're seen canoodling everywhere from Aspen to Acapulco.

  • Mariah kicks her evil alter ego's butt in a bathroom catfight in 1999's "Heartbreaker."

  • She baffles MTV TRL host Carson Daly and audiences worldwide with her sudden striptease and popsicle-distributing spectacle in 2001, claiming, "I just want one day off when I can...eat ice cream and look at rainbows."

  • After leaving ominous voice messages on her Web site ("I'm trying to understand things in life right now..."), Mariah is hospitalized for "extreme exhaustion." Her breakdown comes before Glitter's spectacular lack of box-office sparkle.

  • Virgin signs Mariah for a reported $80 million in 2001, one of the biggest record deals in history. After her meltdown, the label pays her $28 million to bounce. She finds a cozier home at Island Def Jam.

  • In Rolling Stone, Eminem insinuates he dated Mariah, but then says, "I just don't like her as a person." She strikes back with "Clown," on 2002's Charmbracelet.

  • Mottola calls this year's The Emancipation of Mimi "her best work yet." But in the "We Belong Together" video, Mariah, in the same Vera Wang gown she wore for her actual wedding to Mottola in '93, runs away from a visibly older man.

In the same issue, on page 74, "Vibe Raters" Staff's Playlist: Serena Kim, Features Editor lists Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" and says, "She channels the legends beautifully." And on page 238, "20Q": Question #16 is about Mariah: "Do all the haters who talked trash about Mariah Carey feel stupid now that she's on top of her game?"

Eminem Act Enrages Mariah // 4:11 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey is angry and hurt that Eminem has been playing private voice-mail messages she left for him in 2001 to audiences of his "Anger Management" tour.

During one "scene" in his concerts, Eminem is talking to the audience when Carey's song, "We Belong Together," comes on.

Eminem berates the deejay and then Carey's messages start to play. "I heard you were getting back with your ex-wife," she says. "Why won't you see me? Why won't you call me? You're not calling me..."

As the messages play, Eminem pretends to vomit into a prop toilet and then launches into his song, "Puke," which has lines like, "You make me sick."

Pals of Carey say Eminem's anger toward the beautiful diva stems from the winter of 2001, when she asked for his help on her "Charmbracelet" album. Eminem claims they had an affair, which she denies.

Eminem was annoyed when Carey wrote a song about their relationship on the album which noted: "You should have never intimated we were lovers. I gotta break it to you delicately - who's gonna love you when it's over? Who's gonna care?"

Eminem hit back in 2002, telling Rolling Stone the two had a brief affair and added: "On the whole personal level, I'm not really feeling it. I just don't like her as a person."

A friend of the diva fumed to us yesterday: "First of all, that is not her voice on the 'messages' played in the concert - it is an imposter! She is considering suing him for defamation. They did hang out, but it was Eminem who followed her around.

"He became obsessed with her," Carey's pal continued, "showing up everywhere... She thought he was a friend. She thought hanging out with him was fun, but then he wanted to take it further, and she said no. She never slept with him and he felt rejected and scorned and got very angry."

Carey's manager, Benny Medina, said: "While we appreciate Eminem as an artist, lately his work has seemed tasteless and unnecessarily mean-spirited. The public seems to agree - just look at his declining record and concert ticket sales."

Eminem's rep declined comment, but we won't be surprised if he makes his own statement at the Video Music Awards on Aug. 28.

Mariah Was Supposed To Fail, Wasn't She? // 7:34 AM EST Updated by Lynn

If we told you a year ago that Snoop Dogg would regain his crown in 2005, Green Day would release one of the biggest rock albums of the decade and Mariah Carey would bounce back from "Glitter" to get her groove back, you'd have thought we were high.

    Mariah Carey

Problem: Where do we start? From "Glitter" to hospitalization, bizarre Web postings and an embarrassing divorce from her former label — which paid her tens of millions to just go away — the one-time megastar was threatening to become her generation's Liza Minnelli. The R&B diva looked like a butterfly whose wings had been clipped.

Solution: Enter Mimi. We're not sure what was freed, but with The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey returned to what she does best: mixing sexy, airy pop hits with the occasional rap cameo. A big part of the success goes to the personal attention of new label boss Antonio "L.A." Reid, but the real clincher was Mariah getting lost. "It was something difficult for her to do, which is stay away for a while," said Geoff Mayfield, director of charts for Billboard magazine. "She was very prolific, especially at the point where she was getting lots of negative publicity. She needed to disappear and come back with an appealing album, and she accomplished both missions."

The moment everything started to change: Unexpectedly, the breathy ballad "We Belong Together" was Carey's biggest top 40 hit in a decade, becoming the summer jam and topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks as it set a record for the largest radio audience ever on the chart.

News Tidbits // 8:35 PM EST Updated by Lynn

--Contrary to an earlier report from EurWeb, Mariah will not be among the artists appearing on the tribute album for Luther Vandross called "An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross."

--Keep voting for Mariah on AOL's Battle of the Bands. Mariah is currently losing to Green Day.

--At the 76th Annual Bud Billiken Parade in Chicago, IL, one float had a bunch of dancers and they danced to the music of "We Belong Together."

--Mariah & Tommy Mottola were rated #26 on E!'s "It's So Over" countdown.

--From Providence, RI's Hot 106.3: She's, Like, Back. Call it a comeback! It feels like the '90s all over again, now that Mariah Carey is once again on top. Her triple-platinum latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi, has proved to be one of the year's most consistent sellers, not having dipped below No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart since its April release. The set's first single, "It's Like That," put her back in the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since her 2002 collaboration with Busta Rhymes and the Flipmode Squad, "I Know What You Want." But no one could have predicted the phenomenal success of the follow-up cut, "We Belong Together." The summer anthem of 2005 has dominated the top of the chart, becoming one of the longest-running No. 1's of her career (it's only bested by her record-setting smash duet with Boyz II Men, "One Sweet Day"). Mariah won't be singing the chart blues anytime soon, either -- the just-released "Shake It Off" already is storming the airwaves. Read the rest of the article.

Mariah Carey in the September Allure // 3:19 PM EST Updated by Lynn

In the September issue of Allure, Mariah Carey reveals that she used to wish that she'd be kidnapped while she was married to Tommy Mottola.

"I used to fantasize about that," she told the magazine. "A lot. I used to think that maybe there could be a kidnapper who could rescue me, and he wouldn't be that mean. I'd have my pocketbook with me at all times in case I had to make an escape."

When she later escaped into the arms of New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, after separating from Mottola, Carey said it was a "very nice transitional period." "If you don't know that there's something else out there, then you're content to deal with what you have."

Jasmine's Juice // 7:37 PM EST Updated by Lynn

"They’ll never show a pic of MC handing me my towel" --Jasmine Dotiwala

I have sea legs. Yep. How? I’ve just spent a week on Mariah Carey’s 200-foot long yacht (with helipad) in the ocean off the coasts of Capri and Sardinia. You may already know about this trip as last Sunday a tabloid newspaper showed a lovely pic of MC in her pink bikini and sarong as I, like any nice friend, was holding a towel for her as she got onto the boat out of the ocean. I was captioned as "an employee". Hee hee! Hilariously they’ll never show a pic of MC handing me my towel. That’s the British press for ya! Anyway here’s the real deally…

With military precision I jumped into my bikini and reported for daily tanning duty – but under MC’s strict instructions, used factor 60 on my skin to stop it ever getting leathery. MC also braided my hair, gave me water aerobics classes and a manicure lesson (she did 500 hours of beauty school once upon a time, you know!) Not sure if I've mentioned it before but MC doubles up as my beautician for all beauty advice and spurs my confidence in the ocean, ’cos before I hung out with her I would never take off my life vest in the choppy seas. The most fantastic thing about MC’s boat, apart from the fact that it towered over the other boats, was it had a huge bubbling hot tub on the top deck filled with rose petals that we sat in every night watching shooting stars from, and get this… the boat's crew ran around all night refilling it with limited edition Evian water! Think that’s funny? MC had her pole dance instructor teach us moves which got our neighbouring boats really excited. And I watched as MC’s acupuncturist got excited as needles of scary looking proportions were poked into her daily – but it obviously works ’cos this insomniac was sleeping!

Our nightly hot tub parties were so loud the neighbouring boats threatened to call the marine police on us if we didn't turn down Tupac's Greatest Hits CD! Speaking of po po get this... myself and MC’s friend Tracy Cloherty (vice president of New York radio station HOT 97) were arrested one afternoon as we raced around on the jet skis.

Apparently, as we needed a jet ski licence, the po-po chased us around the island – we never saw them behind us – and when we finally did they made us flip our jet-ski upside down in the ocean. After we got up on it again they “accompanied us back to our boat” where they scared us by confiscating our passports for an hour. It was cops 'n' robbers but on jet skis with bikinis!

Around the way I spotted Liz Hurley and her boyfriend Arun Nayer shopping, Denzel Washington invited us to his boat, as did a million other rich folk (like a Saudi prince) but we were having so much fun relaxing having BBQs on our boat, watching The Wiz and Meet The Parents on our in-boat cinema that we only accepted one invite on the spur of the moment.

We were invited onto the hugest boat ever which turned out to be owned by one of the partners of Topshop and other billion-dollar businesses. The big thing was that he offered to close down Topshop for us anytime we like so we can have a private shop! So it was a week of pleasure and pleasure for this west London chick. I feel like the luckiest girl alive! I'm in New York writing this to you as I flew straight here for a Destiny’s Child moment which I’ll tell y'all about next week. In the meantime I’m getting strange looks from people as – after a week on water – I’m swaying about as I walk, even when I’m sitting! MC – you didn’t mention this bit! Folkz think I’m drunk!

And I guess I am – on the joy of life!

Click here to listen to an interview with Danyel Smith, the author of the book "Bliss".

During the interview, Danyel Smith mentions Mariah as an inspiration to one of the book's characters.

Danyel mentions Mariah again as an example for an artist that is always under pressure despite being extremely successful and that most people don't understand the effects of that pressure.

As previously reported, Mariah has endorsed the book. The quote from Mariah printed on the book's cover reads: "The music business can be an enchanted snake pit, but Danyel tells her heroine's story with an insider's knowledge, with power, and most of all, with emotion." —Mariah Carey

Producer Darren Dowlut Dies At 27 // 12:23 PM EST Updated by Liron

HIT-MAKER to the stars Darren Dowlut has lost his battle with cancer.

Dowlut, 27, was an award-winning producer and singer-songwriter who worked with American Mariah Carey.
He died at the Monash Medical Centre on Saturday, six weeks after doctors found a tumour in his chest.

Dowlut, of St Kilda, fell ill while preparing to move to Los Angeles to capitalise on his career breakthrough.

His brother Dennis flew to LA earlier to set up shop, but aborted their US mission after doctors found the tumour.

Tributes flowed yesterday. Carey sent condolences when told of the grim diagnosis a few weeks ago.

Darren and Dennis Dowlut were first known as a performance duo Kaylan.

Then they became a studio project called Disco Montego, and the hits flowed. Artists including Katie Underwood, Danielle and Autumn Breeze fronted Dowlut's songs all the way to No. 1. Underwood turned Beautiful and Magic into top 5 hits.

Soon after, Mariah Carey ordered a Dowlut remix of her hit Boy I Need You.

--From the August 15th issue of Celebrity Living: "After relaxing with family and friends on a boat for a week, Mariah will be back in the US and back to work as gearing up for a Spring 2006 world tour kicking off in Asia."

--Correction from The New York Times: A Critic's Notebook article on Thursday about Mariah Carey's summer hit "We Belong Together" misidentified the song on which she collaborated with the rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard. It was "Fantasy (Remix)," not "Honey." (Go to Article)

--From Times Online UK: Some of these bloggers may be fantasists — but not all of them. And if even a fraction of what they say is true, there is simply no way on earth that even the most controlling, rottweiler-like A-list publicists can keep a lid on this kind of incendiary material for long. Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey, Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell are among the bloggers’ current favourites.

"We Belong Together": The Longest-Running No. 1 Single of 2005 // 10:31 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (Island) is on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a 10th week, making it the longest-running No. 1 single of 2005, and the first to achieve a double-digit run since the first half of 2004, when Usher's "Yeah!" reigned for 12 weeks.

"We Belong Together" is the seventh single of the millennium to be No. 1 for 10 weeks or longer. The magnificent seven are, in chronological order:

"Maria Maria," Santana ft. the Product G&B (2000) 10 weeks
    "Independent Women Part I," Destiny's Child (2000) 11 weeks
    "Foolish," Ashanti (2002) 10 weeks
"Dilemma," Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland (2002) 10 weeks
"Lose Yourself," Eminem (2002) 12 weeks
"Yeah!" Usher featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris (2004) 12 weeks
"We Belong Together," Mariah Carey (2005) 10 weeks to date

"We Belong Together" is Carey's second No. 1 single to have a double-digit run. At the end of 1995, "One Sweet Day," recorded with Boyz II Men, began a 16-week reign.

With Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" preceding Carey's song in pole position, and Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven" interrupting Carey's run, women have led the list for 15 consecutive weeks. That's the longest shut-out of men at No. 1 in over six years. From January-April 1999, consecutive chart-toppers from Brandy ("Have You Ever?"), Britney Spears ("...Baby One More Time"), Monica ("Angel of Mine"), Cher ("Believe") and TLC ("No Scrubs") held sway for 16 weeks in a row.

Chasing Mariah Carey // 9:59 AM EST Updated by Lynn

You know L.A. native Danyel Smith. Channel-surfers know her from VH1 ubiquity, contemporary black music fans from her ’90s tenure as Vibe editor, and aficionados of urban literature from Smith’s surprising first novel, More Like Wrestling. Her second, Bliss (Crown), just hit stores in July.

In an interview with LA City Beat, Danyel Smith talks about her new novel Bliss, the model for her character, Sunny and how she 'chased' Mariah to endorse her book.

    Who's your model for Sunny?
"My perfect pop star, in terms of an artist, is probably a combination of Mariah Carey and Erykah Badu. And that's really what I had in mind."

What do you mean by perfect pop star?
"Somebody with a beautiful voice, depth, appeal to the so-called underground, as well as the masses – and by masses I mean worldwide. I get real seduced by people who – and I know it’s the force of multinational corporations – manage to seduce the entire world. In a perfect world, Erykah would have done that. Mariah’s done it, to a degree. They both have weird voices to me. They both write, which I respect. And that’s what Sunny does and she's always trying to get respect for."

Speaking of weird and Mariah Carey, how weird is it to have her blurb on your cover?
"[Author and former Vibe editor] Alan Light endorsed the book and I ran into him at a reading of his. I said I got Mariah Carey to endorse the book. And Alan really liked Bliss. But he said, “That’s the first person I think of when I think of a literary masterpiece!

I did a cover story many moons ago. It was a dramatic moment in her life and it was dramatic for me. It was one of those things where I couldn't get in touch with Mariah. I managed through my ways to get her cell number, called her, she picked up the phone. "How the f* d'you get my number? Who the f* are you?" I talked to her, and she tried to tell me she was in some remote corner of the world and no one could get to her. I thought she was in Fiji or something, and she was in Sonoma County! So, I was like, "Look here, sister, I’ll be there before midnight." And I did. I was in her room from like two in the morning until almost dawn. We just had a great conversation. I’m not under the illusion that me and Mariah Carey are any kind of friends, but I do think it was just one of those moments. Maybe it meant a little something to her, which is maybe why she felt comfortable endorsing the book – and I know she did like it – and why I felt comfortable asking her."

The Summer Buzz: Cicadas and Mariah Carey // 12:31 AM EST Updated by Lynn

There is no Grammy category. No way to vote. No agreement about the criteria. No irrefutable proof, even, that such a thing exists. And yet the old-fashioned scramble persists, as favorites and - especially - underdogs compete to create the song that will blare out of car stereos and iPods and sand-flecked boomboxes all season long. Everyone wants to release the song of the summer.

It has been two months since Memorial Day, and a couple of clap-along club tracks have earned pride of place on the summer soundtrack. Back in June, when summer seemed to have enough room for all the big plans and lazy days you could dream up, Gwen Stefani's cheerful (and, thanks to its pom-pom-inspired beat, cheer-full) hit "Hollaback Girl" taught listeners across the country how to spell bananas. And now, with the specter of Labor Day growing increasingly and distressingly hard to ignore, the Barbados upstart Rihanna is mounting a campaign of her own, buoyed by an exploding pop-dancehall confection called "Pon de Replay."

But to both Rihanna and Ms. Stefani, this much must be said: nice try.

The truth is that this year's race to crown the song of the summer was about as suspenseful as the Tour de France. Back on Memorial Day the No. 1 song on Billboard's Hot 100 chart was Mariah Carey's sublime ballad "We Belong Together." And if you check the charts this week, you will see that same song in that same position, which it has occupied almost all summer.

According to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, which tracks radio airplay, "We Belong Together" had 195,535 radio plays, or spins, from Memorial Day through last week. "Hollaback Girl," which has already started sliding down the charts, was a distant second place, at 115,532 spins. And although Rihanna has been surging (her song quickly leapt to No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100), her "Pon de Replay" has received only 65,771 spins; she would need an unprecedented groundswell to surpass Ms. Carey before Labor Day, especially since "We Belong Together" is still getting played more than just about anything else on the radio.

After last week, when Attorney General Eliot Spitzer of New York got Sony BMG Music Entertainment to pay a fine of $10 million for improper promotional practices, listeners may be especially skeptical of songs that monopolize radio the way Ms. Carey's song has. But as she can attest, money and fame are not enough to prevent a big star from releasing a big flop. Even the cleverest promotional campaign is not enough to persuade the country's radio stations to play a single song a quarter of a million times in three months. And this summer, everyone seems to be singing her song.

In years past, the song of the summer has been a hip-hop track built for the clubs, like the gruff but effective 2004 hit "Lean Back" by the Terror Squad (Fat Joe's group), or the exuberant 2003 disco-rap hybrid "Crazy in Love," by Beyoncé and her boyfriend Jay-Z.

That's why "We Belong Together" didn't initially seem like a favorite for song of the summer: it's a light, graceful ballad with a few simple piano chords and a slow, mellow backbeat. Unlike "Lean Back," it hasn't spawned a catchphrase; unlike "Crazy in Love," this song doesn't beg listeners to scream along; unlike "Hollaback Girl" and "Pon de Replay," this song doesn't even command listeners to dance. And Ms. Carey never even wails the titular phrase: she sighs it, as if her ex-lover ("When you left I lost a part of me/ It's still so hard to believe") were already a lost cause. It's the most melancholy song to rule the summer in years.

Suffice it to say that Ms. Carey's slump is over. After the spectacular implosion that was "Glitter," she returned in 2002 with "Charmbracelet," a pretty good album that didn't quite put her back on top. But her current album, "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island Def Jam), is her best since the 1990's; she has re-established herself as a neo-disco diva while subtly updating her approach.

In the mid-1990's Ms. Carey pioneered a subgenre that some people call the thug-love duet. Nowadays clean-cut pop stars are expected to collaborate with roughneck rappers, but when Ms. Carey teamed up with Ol' Dirty Bastard, of the Wu-Tang Clan, for the 1995 hit "Honey," it was a surprise, and a smash. A decade later, the thug-love era (as epitomized by Ashanti, a thug-love specialist) has come and gone; nowadays rappers often do their own singing, and singers borrow cadences from hip-hop.

    R. Kelly taught a generation of R&B stars how to spit phrases like rappers, and Usher has perfected this slick, verbose approach. Ms. Carey has been paying attention. On "Mimi" a singer once known for melisma adopts a lighter, more agile style, upping the words-per-note ratio considerably; instead of moving a single syllable up and down the scale, she often uses just a few notes to deliver a nimble burst of words.

This style is part of the reason why she has been able to turn a ballad into a summer smash. "We Belong Together" doesn't have a guest rapper (except on the excellent remix, featuring Jadakiss and Styles P.), or a hard-hitting beat, but Ms. Carey's tricky vocal lines give the song more propulsion than you'd expect, with tightly coiled counter-rhythms that tug against the beat. This song seems simpler than it is, and while it doesn't sound like a mishmash, the liner notes credit no fewer than 3 producers and 10 songwriters. The second verse cleverly incorporates two predecessors: Ms. Carey imagines turning on the radio and singing along to Bobby Womack ("If You Think You're Lonely Now") and Babyface ("Two Occasions").

It's true that the song of the summer is an illusion, or at any rate an exaggeration: during the summer, as during the rest of the year, people listen to all sorts of stuff. And when was the last time you actually saw a boombox on the beach, anyway? Still, for many of us, "We Belong Together" has already come to seem inseparable from the season it has dominated. The gone-too-soon lyrics match not only the season's good times, but its broken promises as well; turn it up, and you can remember all the fun you almost had.

News Tidbits // 8:26 PM EST Updated by Lynn

--In CNN's People In The News poll, "Who is your favorite diva?", current tally shows Mariah at #2 with 647 votes or 38% of total votes. She's trailing behind current leader Whitney Houston by just 61 votes. Please continue to vote for Mariah by clicking here.

--From Billboard: Mariah Carey and the Killers are the latest acts confirmed to perform at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. They will join previously announced acts Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson and Green Day on stage at the event, which will be broadcast live Aug. 28 from Miami's American Airlines Arena.

--From Chicago Tribune: So far, this summer is without a 'song'. "There's no Baha Men-style hit this summer," said WKSC-FM 103.5. morning host, DreX. "None of that Caribbean stuff is taking over. Nobody let the dogs out, thank God." Instead, DreX said Kiss FM is receiving requests for a variety of songs, none of which fit the usual summer song description. Most shocking to DreX is the summertime success of Mariah Carey's slow burner, "We Belong Together," a hit also in heavy rotation at WGCI-FM 107.5 and WBBM-FM 96.3. Why isn't Carey's hit a summer song? "We started playing it in April, so it can sort of be considered a summer release, but it's a love song," said Erik Bradley, music director at B96.

--In the August issue of Blender magazine, page 50, there is a small section about Mariah's top slipping. The article says, "During a live performace in May, the diva gesticulated for emphasis, lifting her arm. She wasn't wearing a bra. The most successful female singer of all time was performing selections from her multiplatinum CD, The Emancipation of Mimi. Unaware of the nip-slip, the showbiz veteran continued the show." However, there are 3 pictures to go along with the section and they all look like they are from the Rainbow era. Everything from the shirt she is wearing in the pictures to the way her hair is looks like it's from a performance of Heartbreaker.

--From USA Today: 17-year-old Barbados native Rihanna whose single "Pon de Replay" is one of the summer's hottest jams says she was surprised by the chance to sing professionally. "I used to sing at home, in the shower and in front of the mirror, but I wasn't a known singer in Barbados," she says. "I did one talent show at my high school, and I won it singing Mariah Carey's Hero."

--From NY Daily News: Top Five - Rock & Jock buddies. "Though music and sports don't always mix (read: Deion Sanders), these pop stars and Big Apple athletes became fast friends: ... 5. And lest we forget...Derek Jeter and Mariah Carey."

--Kathy Griffin's celebrity playlist on iTunes includes Mariah’s “Butterfly” as her #13 track. She comments, "Ok, maybe this butterfly is a little crazy, but you WILL well up during this song."

--From PR Newswire: After 15 weeks on the Billboard's Pop 100 chart, the Pussycat Dolls' anthem "Don't Cha" knocks Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" from the pole position. Lead singer Nicole Scherzinger says, "When I think about eighteen months ago when this all began and how far we've come, I can't wait to see where we are eighteen months from now. It's also such an honor to have the baton of a #1 song passed to us by an icon like Mariah Carey."
