Mariah & Jack Featured in K9 Magazine // 8:26 PM EST Updated by Lynn

In a world exclusive K9 Magazine interview, Mariah Carey, whose string of hits have made her one of the world's most successful artists ever, tells the magazine how Jack - or Jackson P Muttley, to give him his full title - is always ready and willing to join her at bath or shower time.

"Jack is a swimmer so he gets obsessed with anything to do with water even if I'm taking a shower he'll try to knock on the door and come and stand in the shower. If I'm running a bath all of a sudden I'll hear a splash and Jack will have jumped into the tub! It's something that's been happening for years and it's like "Jack's in the tub again!" and there he is swimming around in the tub".

Mariah goes on to explain how Jack's enthusiasm for h20 also extends to water jets. "His favourite toy is the jet inside the pool – like the jets you find in pools and hot tubs. He treats that as his toy and continuously dives under the water and tries to bite the water coming out of the jet."

Mariah's exclusive interview appears in the Winter edition of K9 Magazine, issue no.14, on sale from October 10th.

    Mariah and George Michael to Duet? // 8:45 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    Pop superstars Mariah Carey and George Michael are in talks to record a duet together.

    The singers met backstage at the London Live 8 gig on July 2, 2005 and Carey was delighted when Michael asked her to collaborate with him.

    A music industry source says, "This is a very big deal. George doesn't do many duets, they're usually with big legends like (Sir) Elton John and Aretha Franklin, but he loves Mariah's work."

    Michael's last high-profile duet, "As" with Mary J Blige was a huge hit in 1999.

    Mariah Interview on AIM // 6:45 PM EST Updated by Liron

    Mariah Carey chatting via AIM, September 2005:

    aolmusic:: hey mariah. wassup?
    aolmusic:: or should I call you Mimi?
    Emancip8Mimi:: whatever you like...
    aolmusic:: where are you at right now?
    Emancip8Mimi:: LA...where are you?
    aolmusic:: I'm in new york, listening to and loving your new album
    aolmusic:: before we go any further, i've got to say congratulations
    Emancip8Mimi:: thank you much
    aolmusic:: there's so many amazing things happening for you right now!
    Emancip8Mimi:: definitely
    Emancip8Mimi:: prayers answered
    aolmusic:: back in August, you became the first female artist in history to have back-to-back number one songs
    aolmusic:: it must just blow your mind to think about what you've achieved.
    Emancip8Mimi:: its hot tamale...
    Emancip8Mimi:: no seriously, it's an incredible feeling and i never expected it...but i'm very gr8ful for this. Especially since it happened with 'Shake It Off' which was one of my favorite songs on the album.
    Emancip8Mimi:: for a while i thought it would never get released as a single cause a lot of people thought it was too "urban" and not pop enough. but it shows me sometimes you just have to trust your own instincts
    aolmusic:: and you're also very close to breaking the Beatles and Elvis' record for most number one songs ever.
    aolmusic:: do you ever have to pinch yourself to make sure you're not dreaming?
    Emancip8Mimi:: i'm just grateful for everything God has given me
    Emancip8Mimi:: obviously its overwhelming to hear that kind of thing. i'm just grateful people are responding to what i'm doing in such a positive way.
    aolmusic:: yeah, and your fans are obviously enjoying your ride to the top.
    aolmusic:: especially the ones that have stood beside you since the beginning
    Emancip8Mimi:: i have the most incredible fans in the world!!!!! at this point, some of them are really like an extended family to me.
    Emancip8Mimi:: this success of 'Mimi' and the fact that 'We Belong Together' has become the most successful single of my career obviously means a lot to me as the artist, but it's even more significant because i know how much it means to the fans.
    aolmusic:: You recorded this album in a couple of different places. What's the biggest difference between working in Atlanta and working in Capri?
    aolmusic:: besides the beach
    Emancip8Mimi:: when i work in ATL its usually a writing session in JD's studio which is a very creative environment, plus we're all friends who have been working together for a long time so we always have fun.
    Emancip8Mimi:: the reason i go to Capri rather then recording in NY or LA or any other city is because that's the best place for me to do my vocals for a number of reasons...
    Emancip8Mimi:: its very private, the air is clean and humid which is great for my voice, and i can totally focus on what i'm doing cause there's no distractions
    Emancip8Mimi:: it's basically just sleeping and singing
    aolmusic:: and it's such a beautiful place too.
    aolmusic:: it must be really inspiring just to be in that setting
    Emancip8Mimi:: definitely! i usually sing by this big open window overlooking the Mediterranean sea
    Emancip8Mimi:: its so beautiful!
    aolmusic:: i can imagine!
    aolmusic:: so, in the rare moments that you actually get time to yourself... what do you do?
    aolmusic:: how does mariah unwind?
    Emancip8Mimi:: i take baths, watch movies, hang with friends, sleep...there's this game called Taboo that I quite enjoy. i love to swim, but that's usually a vacation activity which is a whole other question.
    aolmusic:: how do you stay on top of things, musically?
    aolmusic:: do you ever go out to clubs to hear what's hitting the streets?
    Emancip8Mimi:: i do like to go to pon de club when i get a chance, but more so in NY where I live...
    Emancip8Mimi:: out here everything closes at 2AM, which would typically be when I'm leaving my apt to go out in NYC.
    aolmusic:: have you heard anything recently that's really turned you on?
    Emancip8Mimi:: i think Jermaine Dupri is on an incredible roll right now...
    aolmusic:: yeah, JD is totally on fire.
    Emancip8Mimi:: he has something like the top 3 or 4 songs in the country right now on a couple different charts i'm SO happy for him cause no one deserves it more!
    aolmusic:: what's the best thing about working with him?
    aolmusic:: what does he bring out of you no one else does?
    Emancip8Mimi:: first of all he's a great person and he's like a brother to me. i think we compliment each other musically, and we always have.
    Emancip8Mimi:: the thing about JD is that his influences are very similar to mine...we both love classic r&b and hip-hop. yet we understand how to merge those elements with what's going on today.
    Emancip8Mimi:: its a creative challenge for us...the 1st song we wrote together was 'Always Be My Baby,' that's when we realized we were a good team. we've both come a long way since then...i feel like we bring out the best in each other.
    Emancip8Mimi:: btw have you heard my dog jack was nominated for a Relly award on the regis and kelly show?
    aolmusic:: omg, no!
    Emancip8Mimi:: it was for best non-human guest...he was up against Miss Piggy, Barney, Chewbacca and a 2 headed albino snake.
    aolmusic:: lol
    aolmusic:: that's so awesome
    Emancip8Mimi:: how PIP is that!
    aolmusic:: how long ago was he on?
    Emancip8Mimi:: he was on with me when 'We Belong Together' first came out. he's a star!
    aolmusic:: aren't there a couple websites devoted to him too?
    Emancip8Mimi:: dahhling yes!!!!
    Emancip8Mimi:: Love Love Jack Japan
    Emancip8Mimi:: and The Marvellous Jack
    Emancip8Mimi:: and i think there's a new one called Doggy P. Fly...they're all cute fansites
    aolmusic:: awwww. what a cutie!
    aolmusic:: pretty soon, he'll be more famous than you
    Emancip8Mimi:: he already is!!!!!!!!!
    aolmusic:: so, last question...
    aolmusic:: cuz i know you're super busy
    aolmusic:: but the people want to know!
    Emancip8Mimi:: drum roll
    aolmusic:: You have had your share of ups and downs, but through it all, you've come out stronger than ever.
    aolmusic:: Any words of wisdom to share with your fans that might be going through it themselves?
    Emancip8Mimi:: weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5
    aolmusic:: amen to that
    aolmusic:: it's been great chatting with ya mariah
    aolmusic:: congrats again on all everything!
    Emancip8Mimi:: been great chatting with you too dahhling!!!!
    aolmusic:: have a lovely night
    Emancip8Mimi:: thank u much...i'm off to the studio!!!!! bye
    Emancip8Mimi:: signed off at 1:27 A.M.

    News Tidbits // 3:15 PM EST Updated by Liron

    --"Shake It Off (Remix)" makes Groovevolt's Hot 5 list at #5.

    --"Shake It Off" was #3 yesterday on TRL, up two places from the day before. Jessica Alba and Damien commented that the album is great.

    --On a Houston radio show on 104.1 KRBE, Jessica Alba was asked if she’d rather watch Glitter, Gigli, or kill herself. She said Glitter because she thinks it’s hilarious.

    --Mariah is #1 on the Yahoo! Buzz top 20 overall and top 20 music searches.

    --MSNBC 'Gossip'-er Jeanette Walls reports that Mariah went "shopping for men" in her last outing in London. "She’s heard that British men are complete gentlemen, and she's ready for some of that. She gave her number to Kaz James [the Bodyrockers frontman who has been linked to Kiera Knightly]. I must say, she was looking quite lovely on the trip so I think she will be successful."

    --Mariah will be performing and modelling Donatella Versace's creations at the same time at Swarovski Fashion Rocks in Monaco next month. The Daily Mirror reports, "Mariah's curvaceous figure is attracting a lot of interest - Donatella is thrilled that she's getting to dress her."

    --Mariah inspires baby names. Drop into any preschool in a few years and you're likely to see a lot of backpacks marked with names like Paris and Mariah. In today's name game, individuality is the mother of invention. An unusual name or spelling isn't enough for some parents. More are settling on names they've made up, playing with syllables, letters and sounds until they find a winner. Aidan gives birth to Zaden. Mariah is twisted into Zariah. When all else fails, go custom-made. From USA Today.

    --From Slant Magazine: Over the years Toni Braxton has publicly defended Mariah Carey's transition from adult contemporary songbird to crossover hip-hop figurehead. Indeed, both women started out singing great big ballads tailor-made to appeal to the broadest possible demographic, and both gradually added more and more urban influence to their repertoire, resulting in a steady decline in popularity [...] Flash forward three years and Mariah Carey is flying high with The Emancipation Of Mimi, an album that finds the singer comfortably—finally—straddling the gulf between pop and R&B without straining too hard to be heard by both sides. Ironically, it was under the tutelage of Braxton's old pal Reid, who serendipitously ended up at the same label as Mariah after departing from his former post at Arista, that Mariah rediscovered her footing.

    Mariah Carey's Doggy Bath // 9:02 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    Mariah Carey has revealed her dog shares her bath. The sexy singer says her pampered pooch, Jack, always jumps in when she's running a bath.

    She admitted: "If I'm running a bath all of a sudden I'll hear a splash and Jack will have jumped into the tub. It's something that has been happening for ages - it's like, 'it's like Jack is in the tub again, swimming around.'"

    Mariah claims the Jack Russell also loves jumping into her hot tub. She is quoted by Scotland's Daily Record newspaper as saying: "His favourite toy is a jet - like the ones you find in pools and hot-tubs. He continually dives under the water and tries to bite the water coming out of the jets."

    Earlier this year, Mariah revealed she logs on to her pet's website every day. Jack has become so famous in his own right the diva's Japanese fans have built a site dedicated solely to him. Mariah is so fascinated with the website she regularly checks in to the news pages, entitled The Emancipation of Jack, after her chart-topping album, 'The Emancipation of Mimi', and the doggy-obsessed message board.

    The beautiful star said, "I laughed out loud for 10 minutes when I found out about Jack's website. He really is a very cool dog. Some of his Japanese fans built it for him. It talks all about him - even his swimming antics."

    "Don't Forget About Us" Unofficial Lyrics // 11:55 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Intro:
    (Don't forget about us)
    Don't baby, don’t baby, don't let it go
    No baby, no baby, no baby no
    Don't baby, don't baby, don't let it go
    My baby boy...

    (Verse I)
    Just let it die
    With no goodbyes
    Details don't matter
    We both paid the price
    Tears in my eyes
    You know sometimes
    It'd be like that baby

    (Bridge I)
    Now everytime I see you
    I pretend I'm fine
    When I wanna reach out to you
    But I turn and I walk and I let it ride
    Baby I must confess
    We were bigger than anything
    Remember us at our best
    And don't forget about

    (Chorus)
    Late nights, playin' in the dark
    And wakin' up inside my arms
    Boy, you'll always be in my heart and
    I can see it in your eyes
    You still want it
    So don't forget about us

    I'm just speaking from experience
    Nothing can compare to your first true love
    So I hope this will remind you
    When it's for real, it's forever
    So don't forget about us

    (Verse II)
    Oh they say
    That you're in a new relationship
    But we both know
    Nothing comes close to
    What we had, it perseveres
    That we both can't forget it
    How good we used to get it

    (Bridge II)
    There's only one me and you
    And how we used to shine
    No matter what you go through
    We are one, that's a fact
    That you can't deny
    So baby we just can't let
    The fire pass us by
    Forever we'd both regret
    So don't forget about

    (Chorus)

    (Rap)
    And if she's got your head all messed up now
    That's the trickery
    She'll wanna have like you know how this lovin' used to be
    I bet she can't do like me
    She'll never be MC

    Baby don't you, don't you forget about us

    (Chorus x2)

    Don't baby, don't baby, don't let it go
    No baby, no baby, no baby no
    Don't baby, don't baby, don't let it go

    When it's for real, it's forever
    So don't forget about us.

    Just when you didn’t think Mariah Carey could get any hotter, out of nowhere comes a new track that's sure to be stripped in to a new special edition of the already multi-platinum, The Emancipation Of Mimi. If you were to mix "We Belong Together" with "Shake It Off" you would get, "Don’t Forget About Us," which is destined to be Mariah’s next #1 record.

    There’s no doubt that Mariah sounds best nowadays when she sings in a lower key. Her songs tend to deliver more emotion and passion in the lower register, but make no mistake, this superstar diva still knows how to unleash her signature vocal prowess, but only when it means most.

    Hey, we told you early on that Mariah was primed for a big comeback, the buzz on this CD started a year ago when Mariah emerged from the studio with producer Jermaine Dupri to deliver an outstanding collection of songs that are Grammy worthy. What we didn’t know was that MC still had another weapon in her arsenal. Mariah is back doing what she does best, delivering radio hits, and this is another one! BET ON IT!

    From FMQB-CHR "BuzzCuts":

    Mariah Carey "Don’t Forget About Us" (Island/IDJMG)
    It’s on your desk or in your inbox via FMQB downloadable MP3 now, and should be on your airwaves by the time you’ve finished reading this. Debuted on AOL First Listen on (9/27) and your audience will be coming to your station to hear it. It’s that good! Expect the song to be stripped into a special edition of The Emancipation Of Mimi.

    Sweet Success // 2:20 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Don't call it a comeback. "I've never gone away," says Mariah Carey about the success of her smash-hit double-platinum album The Emancipation of Mimi. And the singer credits her tough times (like her 2001 breakdown) with helping her to get back to the top of the charts. "You have to be put through the wringer in order to be able to succeed sometimes. You have to go through something in order to get back in touch with your creative roots as a songwriter, as an artist, in every way."

    And what about reports that the songstress and Eddie Murphy became an item at the MTV Video Music Awards in August? "We were hanging out. I'm a huge Eddie Murphy fan," she told us at the re-launch party for the Versace store on London's Sloane Street, where she was in true diva form in a slinky white dress by the designer with gold straps and diamanté-festooned stilettos. "Maybe they could just tell that, and that's why they made a big drama. But there is nothing going on. That's the last time I saw him."

    Mariah Drops New Single // 4:22 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Mariah Carey and producer Jermaine Dupri are at it again. Island Records will be dropping a new Mariah single, "Don't Forget About Us," to Pop radio on Wednesday (9/28). The single is not (as yet) available on her current album The Emancipation Of Mimi. Island executives characterize the single as a cross between "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off," two huge number one singles, and lyrically comparable to the compelling "We Belong Together." "Don't Forget About Us" is available to listen to all day today via AOL First Listen.

    Carey also recently released a remix of "Shake It Off," featuring Jay-Z and Young Jeezy, which is available exclusively at the iTunes Music Store.

    Carey, Chesney and Thomas Set To Perform at 2005 AMAs // 2:45 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    The initial performers set to appear on the 2005 American Music Awards, to be telecast on Tuesday, November 22 8:00-11:00 pm ET on the ABC Television Network, are not only all multi-platinum sellers, they are also all nominees for this year’s awards.

    Scheduled to perform thus far are international superstar Mariah Carey (four nominations), Country Music’s reigning Entertainer of the Year, Kenny Chesney, and the driving force of Matchbox Twenty and acclaimed solo artist Rob Thomas.

    A previous winner of eight American Music Awards, Mariah Carey is simply the No. 1 most successful female songwriter and performer of all time. She recently added to her long list of achievements when she became the only woman in history to hold the two top spots on the hit singles chart simultaneously. Also a previous American Music Award winner, Kenny Chesney, has sold over 25 million records. His current album, the self-written "Be As You Are," debuted at #1 without the benefit of a single or a tour - although his ensuing summer tour marked the third year in a row where the high energy performer played to over a million people. Rob Thomas is one of the most distinctive vocalists and accomplished songwriters in contemporary music. He made chart history earlier this year when his first solo album, "...Something To Be," entered the charts at #1, making him the first male artist from a rock or pop group to debut at the top of the charts with their initial solo album.

    Additional artists will be added to the line up and announced at a later date. Hosting the 33rd annual special is Cedric "The Entertainer."

    A total of 21 publicly voted awards will be presented on this year's "American Music Awards" in eight areas of music - Pop/Rock, Country, Soul/Rhythm & Blues, Rap/Hip-Hop, Latin Music, Adult Contemporary Music, Alternative Music and Contemporary Inspirational Music.

    The live special, which emanates from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, is a presentation of Dick Clark Productions, Inc., with Allen Shapiro serving as Executive Producer. Larry Klein produces the telecast and Jeff Margolis directs.

    Note: As previously reported, Mariah is vying for four awards namely, Favorite Female Artist (Pop/Rock), Favorite Album (Pop/Rock), Favorite Female Artist (Soul/Rhythm), and Favorite Album (Soul/Rhythm).

    Jasmine's Juice // 2:46 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    My farrago of a life is a little more settled this week! Finally I returned from yet another trip to Los Scandalous where I finished Mariah’s making of the video show for her new double A-side single Shake it off / Get your number – you’ve gotta watch your MTV schedules for it. It's hot tamale! Oh yeah!!!! On the last day my diva observations took on a whole new dimension as I witnessed MC's pooch, Jack, getting a massage from MC's private masseuese..... ahhh the life of a star doggie!

    While I was in the studio with MC I saw Hovi Baby (or president Shawn Carter, as he likes to be known now) get on the Shake it off remix with Young Jeezy – who was getting enough afflatus from his mentor Jigga. It’s stone “hood-osity” !!!!!!!!!!!!! Caliente! It was so exciting watching them all lay vocals down. Wow. That’s all I can say.

    Another wow moment was when Jacko called MC to ask her to join him on his Hurricane Katrina single. Listening to the ‘oh so casual’ convo between superstars is Heat magazine in motion!

    Speaking of which, the hip-hop community has really stepped up to the plate with all the big names – including Mariah – donating a lot of big cheques to help (MC didn't want me to mention that bit but I feel strongly that you should know that the stars do a lot of charity stuff).

    Mariah Carey's poker win // 11:00 AM EST Updated by Liron

    Mariah Carey won $27,000 (£15,000) playing poker in Las Vegas last Friday.

    The singer joined the likes of Usher, Nelly and Janet Jackson for producer Jermaine Dupri's birthday bash at the opening of the Tao restaurant at the city's Venetian Hotel.

    Visiting a nearby casino, Carey walked away with her booty after just three rounds of the game, though she admits her success may not have been all down to skill.

    Contactmusic.com quotes her as saying: "I used to play poker with my sister. But I think my low-cut dress put some of the guys off."

    "Don't Forget About Us" Partial Lyrics // 2:35 PM EST Updated by Liron

    Verse 1:
    Just let it die
    With no goodbyes
    Details don't matter
    We both pay the price
    Tears in my eyes
    You know sometimes
    It be like that baby
    Now every time I see you
    I pretend I'm fine
    When I wanna reach out to you
    But I turn, and I walk and I let it ride
    Baby I must confess
    We were bigger than anything
    Remember us at our best

    Chorus:
    And don't forget about (us)
    Late nights playin' in the dark
    And waking up inside my arms boy
    You'll always be in my heart
    I'll just speak it from experience
    Nothing can compare to your first true love
    So I hope this will remind you...

    Erik Bradley comments on "Don't Forget About Us" // 5:11 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Chicago's B96 APD/MD Erik Bradley replies to an email sent in by Curtis this morning and comments on Mariah's new track, "Don't Forget About Us."

    Hey there. In case you didn't already know, you are the favorite DJ of all Mariah's fans. Your ongoing support of her career is so refreshing and we LOVE it, daaahhhling.

    Anyway, someone told me today that they heard from YOU that Mariah's new song, "Don't Forget About Us," is incredible and that she really outdid herself. Of course, this is what we are all hoping for and want to believe. However, it'd be really easy for someone to just MAKE UP the fact that they spoke to you. So, here I am trying to clear things up for Mariah's fans online.

    1. We all know you have the promo cd of DFAU and that you plan to premiere it early next week. Right?
    2. Is the song an awesome ballad? What's it like? How are the vocals?

    Anyway, if you can't answer these questions...it's cool. But your station might not get as many calls and emails these next few days if you can clear some things up! I'll report it all and spread the word (if you want me to). Just know that we all love ya!!!
    Peace,
    Curtis

    Erik Bradley's reply:

    Absolutely. Mariah never ceases to amaze me with her talent & unbelievable ability. She definitely outdid herself on "Don't Forget About Us". It's a killer love song, one that I might compare to a cross between "We Belong Together" and "Breakdown.". It's another Jermaine Dupri produced mega-smash...everyone will LOVE it! I believe it'll be on the radio sometime early next week!

    Thanks go to YOU and all of her loyal fans for all that YOU guys do for her. Ya'll are a huge reason that she is back on top of the world, for always standing by her and supporting everything she does. Keep it up. She's a dear friend and one of the most incredible people I know (not to mention, the hardest working & most talented artist I've ever seen in my career.) I too will be down for her forever!

    If ya have any other questions don't hesitate to let me know! ALSO, be sure to tell EVERYONE to download the "Shake It Off" remix on I-Tunes. We need this #1 to happen next week...and by downloading the single, it can happen if everyone does it...it's gonna be REAL close between MC & Kanye again, so we all need to do our part to take it over the top!

    All the best,
    Erik Bradley

    Also, a reliable source tells us that there might be another new collaboration with Jermaine Dupri on the re-release of "The Emancipation of Mimi" and that if it was going to make the cut, Mariah would have to record it next week.

    Young Jeezy Honored To Work With MC // 5:37 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    Jeezy - whose current single is "Soul Survivor" - just completed what may be his highest-profile guest appearance to date, rapping on the remix of Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off" along with Jay-Z.

    "M.C. hit me up," Jeezy said, explaining how he got down with the track. "When Hov said he was doing it, I was like, 'I'm all for it.' I felt if I'd kept it 'hood, I was gonna be good. I got the feedback from the 'hood, so it's all good. Mariah is known for doing remixes with street cats from Mobb Deep to O.D.B., so to be a part of that was a good look for me and the Def Jam movement."

    Jeezy said he hoped that they'd shoot a video for the track so that he could capture the visual of eating Popeye's chicken and drinking Cristal.

    Mariah's Tickled Pink // 10:26 AM EST Updated by Liron

    She's best known as a diva these days, but Mariah Carey proved she's still got her feet on the ground this weekend.

    The singer was on-hand to help raise funds for breast cancer at Asda's Tickled Pink charity concert.

    Mariah donned a pink frock to perform at the event, which was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

    And she was in good company, with the likes of Sheryl Crowe, Sugababes and Westlife joining her.

    The lads of Westlife, who sung with Mariah on the hit Against All Odds back in 2000, followed her lead by wearing matching pink shirts.

    And there were famous faces to be spotted watching the acts on-stage - Denise Van Outen and Kate Lawler being two of them.

    Somebody Careys // 10:17 AM EST Updated by Liron

    Looks like Mariah Carey's hunt for Mr Right is going well as she's not short of attention.

    The stunning singer had "countless" bouquets and gifts sent to her London hotel from a mystery suitor on Saturday.

    She told 3am's Caroline: "A girl always loves to get surprises. It's very flattering."

    And the 36-year-old babe, who performed a brilliant set at the Tickled Pink breast cancer benefit at London's Royal Albert Hall last night, added that she can't wait to move to the UK next year.

    Talking about her planned extended stay - which 3am exclusively revealed last week - she said: "This country is just fabulous and I always have a great time. To spend a longer time here would be great".

    And we'd be delighted to have you...

    Editor's Note: Despite what the article says, Mariah denied moving to London in both of her recent Interviews (CD:UK on Saturday, BBC Radio on Sunday.)

    Download: Mariah's Live Interview On UK's Radio 1 // 11:34 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Earlier today, Mariah graced the BBC Radio 1 studios and sat down for a live interview with DJ Tim Westwood at around 9:30pm British time.

    Click on the links below to download audio files of the interview. Many thanks to DJ!

  • Part One
  • Part Two

    Here are excerpts from the interview:

    About "We Belong Together"
    Westwood: I mean you're really coming with the heat. Did you think you had a monster like this?
    Mariah: No. I mean I really love the record and I was really like happy making it and everything but never did I think, 'Okay, I'm gonna have my biggest song of my career on this record' like I was really excited and I was hopeful that it'll do well but I wasn't expecting a 14, 15 with number one on the Pop and Hip-Hop charts.

    About "Shake It Off" Remix
    Westwood: "Shake It Off" Remix is really strong out there man! Jay-Z stepped up, Jeezy on there, incredible! This feels like hip-hop 2005, you know what I mean? This is a strong record.
    Mariah: It just came out. Are you guys playing the one with the bleeps? See in America, we have to play the bleeps. You have the good moments here in London. You can really hear the exact version.
    Westwood: What's it like having him as a boss? Must be a nice feeling for you.
    Mariah: Well, he's technically not my boss dahhhling. I'm an independent contractor. Listen I'm honored to have him on any record whether he's my boss, he can be king of the hill, king of the world, we love hovy baby.

    About Live 8 and 'Shelter From The Storm' Telethon
    Mariah: It's really cool there with them 'cause I'm not about the finale. I hate a finale. Anybody who knows me will know. I hate it when they throw everybody together and they're like, 'Alright, yey! We are the world' you know. I don't know, I always feel that way but then the kids made it really an important, real moment as opposed to like 'everybody get out there and pretend we're all bestfriends and hold hands as we sing,' whatever... so it was nice.
    Westwood: The event itself was incredible for you?
    Mariah: It was because just to be a part of something that means something right now is really important. We just did a telethon in L.A. for the Louisiana situation so that was a big deal in America. I don't know if anybody saw it here. It was on a bunch of stations and stuff so it's nice to be able to be involved in things that are not just like self promotion moments like right now, 'here I am! The Emancipation of Mimi in stores!' hahaha!

    About Not Winning At VMAs
    Westwood: Congratulations to the VMAs, how many joints, four?
    Mariah: Dahhhling, I ain't win nothing. I am the Susan Lucci of the VMAs! But that's okay.
    Westwood:: Why didn't you win an award? What happened? What went wrong?
    Mariah: Dahhhling, I don't know. They don't know... those MTV people (laughs). You know what? Actually I wasn't there. I got to tell you the truth, it's too bleak to sit in the audience for a whole awards show for me, I can't take it.
    Westwood: Man, you gotta go to them to win, they won't give it to you otherwise.
    Mariah: Well, they gotta change the lighting (laughs). It's bleak lighting - it's overhead and they stick the camera in your face the whole time. You know, it was like 'perform in the pool' and I'm like, 'well I got to be the one walking on the plexi-glass in 3-inch heels and what not.. you know, they know I'm a trooper and I'll do it and we love MTV and they're fabulous and maybe one day, they'll wanna give me one of those moonmen so I can put it in a shelf with the rest of the nice awards.

    News Tidbits // 6:28 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    --Mariah is scheduled to be on UK's Top Of The Pops on Sunday, September 18th.

    --"Shake It Off" fell to #2 on yesterday's TRL. Let's keep on voting and get Mariah back to #1! Meanwhile, on this week's VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown, "Shake It Off" climbs three spots from #6 to #3. Please continue to support Mariah by casting your vote online in the Top 20 Video Countdown Message Board.

    --Fox News columnist Roger Friedman predicts that Mariah is likely to receive nominations for her highly-acclaimed album, "The Emancipation of Mimi" and hit song, "We Belong Together." He says Mariah should expect nods for Best Pop Vocal Female, Best Album, Best Song and Record Of The Year when this year's Grammy nominations are announced.

    --Thanks to CiTay for sending us a video file (in WMV, 22.2MB) of Mariah's appearance on the German show, "Wetten Dass...?" that was originally aired January 29, 2000 on ZDF. On the show, Mariah performed "Thank God I Found You" together with Joe Thomas. To download this video file, click here.

    --"Silent Night" by Mariah Carey is one of the Holiday songs included on "Martha Stewart Living Music: Traditional Songs For The Holidays" due out October 18, 2005. Offerings from Aretha Franklin ("Winter Wonderland"), Barry Manilow (What Are You Doing New Year's Eve"), Elvis Presley ("Blue Christmas") to name a few will also grace the album. According to Martha, these songs are performed by well-loved artists whose voices she associates many memorable times in her life with. Now available for pre-order at Sony Music Store.

    --Vogue's editor-in-chief Andre Leon Talley was featured on the "Oprah" show yesterday. During his sit-down interview, he spoke about meeting Mariah for the first time at her apartment, and watched her stylist sort through about 100 outfits for her to choose two outfits from (and surprised Oprah when he revealed that Mariah's stylist had assistants). During this time, Mariah was busy getting her hair and make-up done for "The Emancipation of Mimi" release party that evening. Andre and Oprah then talked about the massive success Mariah has achieved with "The Emancipation of Mimi." They congratulated Mariah on her comeback, and commented on how great the album is.

    --Classical singer Charlotte Church picked "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Mariah Carey as one of her favorite downloads in the Sunday Telegraph. She comments, "I love this one because I used to do the Bus Stop dance to it and it still makes me want to get up and move every time I hear it."

    --The LG VX9800 Entertainment Cell Phone was officially announced at the MTV Video Music Awards. Nelly and Jermaine Dupri almost battled over the cell sensation - that is until JD offered to put it in the new Mariah Carey video, "Get Your Number." Slated for release later this year, look for VX9800 to be in the hands of all the who's who of the hip-hop industry. Jermaine, Mariah, Nelly, and Shaquille O'Neal will be among the first ten celebs to get the phone before it hits the shelves. Chronic Magazine reports.

    Mariah Pups Up In The UK // 12:42 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    And her pooch needs a home too.

    The nation's scented candle suppliers had better stock up - Mariah Carey is planning to move to Blighty.

    Word reaches us that the fragrant songstress is so keen to settle here she's already instructed three top estate agents to find the perfect country pad for her - and her beloved Jack Russel l- by next year. A close friend of the star tells us: "Mariah's always been fond of the UK, but since her career's taken off again she's had the chance to visit several times in a year. And each time she's got back to the US, she's been sad.

    "Mariah loves Britain's history and culture and finds everyone so polite. And she thinks the English countryside is stunning - particularly around Oxfordshire. That's where she's asked the estate agents to concentrate their search."

    Stunning Mariah's performing at a Tickled Pink breast cancer benefit at London's Royal Albert Hall on Sunday and is currently at number one and two in the US charts.

    She's hoping to spend several months in her country bolthole writing material for her next album - accompanied by her pooch, Jack. The friend continues: ''Mariah loves that Jack Russell so much, it's untrue. He goes absolutely everywhere with her - even her yacht in Capri. And as she's coming over for a long period next year he'll be able to get Jack a pet passport." But even Location, Location, Location's Phil and Kirsty would be hard pushed to find Mariah's ideal home - despite an enormous budget of up to £8,000 a week.

    As well as a pool for her daily water aerobics sessions, Mariah - whose new single Get Your Number/Shake It Off is out on September 26 - needs at least eight bedrooms to accommodate the children her charitable foundation takes care of. She hopes to fly them over for a holiday. The source adds: "Obviously Mariah wants comfort, but the main thing she's after is peace. "Angelina JoIie and Madonna both lead relatively normal lives over here and that's what she wants. But she'll be heading to London for some nights out, too."

    And if she's in need of a babysitter for Jack, we're happy to oblige...

    Track Review: "Shake It Off (Remix)" // 8:34 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Mariah Carey ft. Jay-Z and Young Jeezy: "Shake It Off (Remix)"
    Genre: R&B/Hip-Hop

    Strong Island's songbird has a unique Lex Luthor-type evil genius when it comes to siphoning talent from brilliant rappers. Over the course of her hit-soaked career, Carey has enlisted future Hip-Hop Hall gimmies like Cam'ron, Jadakiss and Jay-Z to give her perfunctory pop some urban market pull. In gratitude, she's made them all sound like blubbering 13-year-old lover boys waiting for their moms to drive them to a smoking-hot mall date.

    The revamped beat rolls like a lumbering combination of Ciara's "Oh" and Cam's Lauper-repping "Girls." Accordingly, Hov continues in the tradition of past Mimi two-step missteps "Heartbreaker" and "Things That U Do", wasting his (and our) time with frustratingly hot-air rhymes. Jeez fares a bit better: He drinks "Cris out the bottle" and eats "pot pies for dinner," but for better/worse, his adlibs are more intoxicating than any of the actual bars. Only one man, the ineffable ODB, defied this siren's wicked call-Ñand he's dead.

    From FMQB - CHR Chartbusters:

    Mariah Carey "Shake It Off" (Island/Def Jam)
    Congrats to the entire IDJ team on scoring yet another #1 record for MC with "Shake It Off" from her multi-platinum CD, The Emancipation Of Mimi. The remix featuring Jay-Z and Young Jeezy is sure to keep the record hot at both Pop and Rhythm. Does MC have something left in the vault that will be stripped into a newly packaged CD? Let’s just say chances are good that more Mariah music will be surfacing before year’s end.

She replies, "Supposedly, Mariah Carey and I hate each other. At a music award ceremony in Germany, we were meant to have had a cat fight and wouldn't stay at the same hotel. There was only one Presidential suite at each hotel, and I wanted one and so did she. I had to find another one. We should have just staged a cat fight because the press really wanted to see it happen. I mean, please, I love MC."

    --From The New York Times: Whoever is responsible for Mariah Carey's inescapable single "We Belong Together" would seem to have a knack for hitmaking. The laid-back ballad broke radio airplay records this summer, reaching an estimated 192 million listeners in one week. That seems bode well for Johnta Austin, credited as one of the tune's main songwriters (there were 10 in all, including Ms. Carey), especially since he is releasing his own debut CD, "Ocean Drive," through So So Def/Virgin Records on Oct. 25.

    --Tennis star Serena Williams when asked if she minded being labeled a diva in ads taken out by the USTA, she chuckled and said that it’s all right with her although she is not in the league of Mariah Carey or Madonna. Williams admitted later that it is tough for her to be a diva because she is too cheap.

    --AOL Music is hosting an online listening party for "Voices," a compilation album featuring Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Jessica Simpson, Destiny's Child and more. Listen to the full album here. You can purchase "Voices" at amazon.com.

    --Vivendi Universal is cashing in on the popularity of digital entertainment. Last year, Universal launched the industry's first mobile music unit and now has a staff of 30 marketing ringtones and music-download services, including the current top-selling ringtone, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," to mobile-phone operators. The group also has signed deals with Yahoo! MSN, and iTunes for music video downloads and pay-per-views. Such pacts, along with the online-games business, give Vivendi a big leg up on competitors. Universal Music executives say they were given ample budgets to sign new artists, even as revenues plunged. They took the potentially risky step of signing Mariah Carey after EMI Group dumped her in 2002. Smart move, considering Carey's new album, The Emancipation of Mimi, has sold more than 2 million copies since April. Business Week reports.

    Jackson: Mariah Carey to perform on Katrina song // 9:54 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    Michael Jackson has recruited pop superstar Mariah Carey, rappers Snoop Dogg and Jay Z, "Godfather of Soul" James Brown and other top artists to perform on a charity single for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, his spokeswoman Raymore Bain said on Monday.

    Also joining Jackson will be retro-rocker Lenny Kravitz; rappers Wyclef Jean, Laryn Hill and Missy Elliott; R&B crooners Ciara, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Yolanda Adams, R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige; and 1970s soul icons the O'Jays.

    Bain has said that the 47-year-old singer, who left his Neverland Valley Ranch in California for Bahrain after his June acquittal on sex abuse charges, will return to the United States to record the song, tentatively titled "From the Bottom of My Heart." All proceeds will be donated to hurricane victims, she said.

    Jasmine's Juice: More MC News From L.A. // 8:10 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    This week saw me at Mariah's Making Of The Video shoot for her 3rd international single, which is a double A-side: Get Your Number / Shake It Off.

    So I land at LAX airport, MC's driver picks me up and informs me I have an hour to get ready to accompany her to the World Music Awards! Whoa! See, this is why my suitcase is always overloaded with extra garms, for impromptu occasions such as this. I pulled out one of my classy frocks and slipped into it on the car ride back to MC's Bel Air mansion where we jumped into her car and sped off to the infamous Kodak Theatre and her backstage dressing room, where we spent the next... wait for it... 7 hours!

    As the World Music Awards are not live they take an age to record, so MC's dressing room luckily was the ONLY place to be. After the first knock on the door, security inform us that L.A Reid and Jay-Z 'President's Reid and Carter' were at the door waiting to say hi to Mariah. Both looking dapper in slick button down shirts and blazers, Jay looking particularly slimline (Beyoncé must have him on a new healthy life-regime), they congratulated her on her current reign at the top of the charts and hung out with us till there's another knock on the door... it's Snoop Dogg with his huge team of 9-year-old soccer players (cute!) who also came to "pay homage to his sister". Then there's a third knock, by now I'm excited as 50 in a candy store… who could be next? It's Stevie Wonder's team come to request Mariah come and say hi to Stevie who's in next doors dressing room. STEVIE WONDER!

    I think I might faint as I take in all the legends surrounding me as MC introduces me as her "surrogate sister!"

    It was all I could do not to beg for a group photo, but the memory will live with me till I'm 100 years old! Oh yeah! I'm gonna live till then! Then it was time to work as MC stepped out to perform her current hits in a show-stopping shorts-and-headband number which saw Beyoncé who was in the front row of the audience (with her boo Jay) be the first to stand and give her a standing ovation, leading the rest of the arena to stand and applaud rapturously too. Then MC went on to win four World Music Awards – one was handed to her by her mate Snoop – and each accompanied by a standing ovation. We then watched as Usher, Amerie and Patti Labelle performed a tribute to honor Destiny's Child before riding home at 3am.

    We were up early next morning for MC's video shoot where Hackney-born British director Jake Nava had her performing.

    We finished filming at 3am, then had a late dinner delivered by Mr Chow's before finally getting to bed at 5am. An hour later, from my room on the other side of MC’s Bel Air home where I was tucked up in bed, I heard moaning coming from MC's room. I found my girl doubled up in pain so severe I was horrified!

    A doctor confirmed it was food poisoning and MC was forced to stay in bed, postponing the video shoot. The next day we nursed MC back to health and I was really relieved. Good news is that I'll have to be back in L.A next week. Bummer! NOT!

    Download: Mariah's Interview On Quebec TV // 7:09 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    An exclusive interview with Mariah in which she talked primarily about the concept behind "We Belong Together" was aired on Quebec, Canada's TV show, Qu'est-ce Qui Fait Courir Le Monde? (What Makes The World Run?) last night. The interview transcript is below.

    [ DOWNLOAD AN MPG FILE (23.1MB) HERE ]

    Many thanks to Jean Philippe for making the video file for us!

    Transcript
    A lot of people have been asking me about "We Belong Together" and obviously it's a great moment for me because the song became a sixteenth number one single and it really was pretty fast how it happened, and it was the last song I wrote for this album.

    I think people are feeling the emotion that went into it and part of what became I think the magic to that record was the fact that I recorded the vocal in pretty much one take because L.A. Reid was coming into the studio and I knew he was like walking downstairs and didn't have any time to finish what I was doing and I wanted to play the song for him and so I kind of just sang it and my first take became the final take.

    The video was shot partially at the Greystone Mansion which is in the Doheny Hills in L.A. and it's just really incredible looking place and I've never seen anything like it in California and I just feel like it was a really nice setting for the video.

    The wedding dress was a Vera Wang original dress from a while ago that I actually wore on a certain ocassion and had it in storage and when we came up with the concept for the video that had the element of a wedding in it, I said, 'well, I do have my old wedding dress.' It's still worth for me 'cause I can't believe I was ever married but whatever, end of story. And I knew that we wouldn't be able to get a fabulous dress like in two days so I just took that dress out of the storage - it has a 27ft train and it was just all hand-beaded and stuff and so I figured we might as well get a use out of it.

    Mariah On The Cover of UK's 'Esquire' // 6:59 PM EST Updated by Liron

    Mariah is featured on the cover of the UK magazine Esquire (October 2005 issue) with a brand new photoshoot and a lengthy interview. Here are the scans and the interview transcript:

    Mariah, Queen of Charts

    Phenomenal sales, an industry marriage and an $80 million contract only led to breakdown and misery for Mariah Carey. Now she's back on her own terms, feted by rap royalty and being nice to orphans - but she's still Billboard's Number One girl.

    Fully made up, with her honey-coloured hair just so, Mariah - her surname seems redundant - slides out of her Mercedes. She's wearing big Fiftees shades, vertiginous heels and a glorious little black dress with a distracting décolletage that reveals her breastbone, which sparkles gently and is clearly made up with as much care as her face. Despite the surroundings - a car park in a duff suburb of Amsterdam - she looks every inch the superstar, but this only partially explains the sense of anticipation of those waiting to greet her at the Esquire photoshoot, in truth, it's her reputation that has increased the collective heartbeat. Even if you can't hum one of her songs, you'll probably be familiar with the stories about Mariah's ludicrous demands - the orders for puppies to stroke backstage, stipulations that white carpet be laid outside hotels in which she is staying, the provision of three-foot scented candles, the supply of 47 Concorde tickets, the rumour that she "doesn't do stairs".

    Mariah Carey
    Having made her wait for several hours, due to an unavoidable airport delay, we are half-expecting fireworks but Mariah introduces herself with a soft, slightly breathless greeting reminiscent of old-school Hollywood starlets. Her natural, sexy New York street accent will only emerge when it gets darker.

    Mariah is near the end of a European trip to promote The Emancipation of Mimi, one of the year's biggest albums. Her trip commenced at LIVE8 in July, and has since taken in a "wardrobe malfunction" on German television, during which her left nipple was exposed, and a sold-out show in Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens. Meanwhile, back in the US, her single "We Belong Together" became the first record in history to top all eight Billboard charts concurrently, an achievement that ranks alongside being the world's biggest-selling artist of the Nineties - which she was. Depending on who provides the figures, Mariah has sold between 160 million and 233 million albums; globally, she's the fifth-biggest artist in show business (only Cliff Richard, Julio Iglesias, Madonna and Michael Jackson have sold more records). You would have thought the numbers alone make her interesting, yet talking to people about her you sense a need to overcome their scepticism.

    "I know I'm a bit of an enigma," she later tells me. "I know that people don't know what box I fit in." Is she the vocal gymnast who created the agenda for Britney and Christina and set a benchmark for marshmallow ballads that a generation of Pop Idol wannabes have to emulate? Or is she the star who popularised the r'n'b/rap crossover, by inviting Ol' Dirty Bastard to share her "Fantasy" 10 years ago? Since most people don't even realise she writes her own material, it's undestandable why so few can answer the question, let alone recognise that she has helped change the face of pop. "I'll have a full interview with someone about my songwriting," she explains patiently, "and then the whole article will be about my hair. It becomes about bullshit."

    Mariah's only real rivalry among her peers is with Madonna. While the latter's love affair with European dance music has delivered diminishing returns in recent years, Mariah's collaborations with urban America's brightest talents, from The Neptunes to Kanye West, has seen her undergo a renaissance. It seems the two women hold no love for one another; in an interview she gave to MTV in the Nineties, Mariah commented witheringly that, "I haven't paid attention to Madonna since seventh or eight grade...When she used to be popular." When their orbits came close colliding at LIVE8, the tabloids reported that Madonna instructed her assistants to keep Mariah "far away".

    Mariah is wise to the raptorial tendencies of the papers - in review of the Hyde Park show, they chewed on her introduction of her personal masseuse and her "demands" for water without mentioning her remark about how the African Children's Choir with which she was performing represented the continent's 11 million orphans. She won't be drawn into commenting on the subject. "I don't believe anything I read about anybody anymore," she says wearily. This is hardly surprising given the ceaseless printing of gossip that infers Mariah is, a) a paragon of conspicuous consumption and, b) a demanding bitch.

    Our photo session seems the perfect place to uncover evidence of unappealing traits, but the only obvious difference between Mariah's catering and what the rest of us is that her cheese plate includes some aged Camembert, while we must make do with industrially produced Brie. Her dinner, meanwhile, is a reheated Chinese takeaway, and even that is delayed until two in the morning, first by our seven-hour photoshoot, then by a Dutch TV interview and finally by my interview back at The Dylan hotel. Even then, despite a gruelling day, she is courteous throughout, and fulsome in her apologies for keeping me waiting so long. When I express surprise about this, she tells me, "Being humble is really important."

    Mariah believes the rumours about her have been created to fill the void that existed during the years she was married to Tommy Mottola. The then President of Sony Music, 21 years her senior, kept her, in her words," sequestered away from the world" on their estate in upstate New York. These days, she relies on therapist's advice, which she quotes, "You've got to stop expecting anything from anybody else. Don't expect to be taken care of, it's never going to happen." She certainly seems to have given up on the press. "It's like Jack Nicholson said in A Few Good Men, she says, stretching out on a sofa in her hotel suite, with only a small cushion in her lap to spare my blushes, "You can't handle the truth." The truth is too boring for people and it's not going to sell any papers."

    This is somewhat disingenuous. There are truths about Mariah that are not boring, yet upon which she isn't willing to elaborate. While happy to confess to teenage misdemeanours - "Sometimes we might steal something," she admits. "Lord forgive me now; but I had to have those Guess jeans" - when interviewers stray towards personal relationships, her creamy voice takes on a steely tone and the drawbridge goes up. Her older sister Alison, who became a teenage mother, a drug addict, a prostitue and contracted HIV, is someone Mariah will refer to only in the most oblique terms. In conversation, Mariah regularly refers to people as "someone" or a "a person" rather than naming then, as though it's understood who she's talking about (Chris Martin apparently does much the same when talking about his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow). The subject of her marriage to Mottola used to be off limits too, though she was recently quoted as saying that he would frequently call her, "freaking out that I'm not at the house and out screwing a million guys, and that's not who I am."

    Her reluctance to air her private grievances hasn't always been appreciated, even by some within her own camp. Earlier this year, Mariah told The Big Issue that when promoting 2002's Charmbracelt album she was advised to play on her personal trials. "People wanted me to talk and to cry on television with Oprah," she said. But personal stresses have taken their toll. In 2001, an ambulance was summoned to her mother's house in New York. Mariah denies that this was the suicide attempt the tabloids described, and has always downplayed the gravity of the breakdown. A bad year got worse when the release of her film, Glitter, coincided with 9/11 (though that could be said to have been the least of its problems). The soundtrack sold more than four million copies, but Virgin Records, who had signed her to a deal valued at $80 million, promptly terminated her contract with $28 million payoff. Retirement must have looked tempting but she threw the dice one more time, signing to Island Def Jam Records, the latest incarnation of the legendary Def Jam hip-hop imprint. And she rolled a pair of sixes.

    Champion of breakthrough R'n'B stars TLC and Usher, Antonio "LA" Reid is a titan of the music industry. Where Sony, and Mottola, emphasised Mariah's Caucasian roots (her mother was a frustrated opera singer) by giving her Pavarotti and Whitney Houston duets, the head of Island Def Jam fostered Mariah's love for r'n'b and hip-hop, partnering her on recent records with the likes of Jadakiss and DJ Clue. The singer finally feels she's on a label that understands her, and that she no longer has to argue "over artists that I wanted to work with, collaborations that I wanted to have and remixes of songs that I thought were better for the album".

    For Mariah, these battles were significant. Growing up poor and mixed-race in Long Island - her mother is white and her father was part African-American and part Venezuelan - left her hoping that fame would bring more than just material rewards. "Of course I wanted all that stuff too," she says, "but it was more about validation because - and this is me analysing myself as a kid - 'People look at me and see this girl who doesn't fit in. They see these shabby clothes, they don't really know where to put me, if I'm black, if I'm white, if I'm Venezuelan...' If you'd asked me if I'd rather be rich or famous, I'd have said famous." Her voice, and that appealing New York accent, softens in tone and volume as she says, "When I was a little kid, I always felt like an outsider."

    Despite the demure outfits and ballads, she didn't lose touch with her roots. 1993's "Dreamlover" was co-produced by Dave "Jam" Hall, who had worked with hardcore New York rappers Brand Nubian and r'n'b queen Mary J. Blige. "That was his clientele," says Mariah. "I'm a fan of hip-hop records until we found 'Blind Alley' by David Porter - and that's the loop in "Dreamlover'." Then in 1995 a remix by Sean "Puffy" Combs of her song "Fantasy" appeared, featuring deranged Wu Tang Clan member Ol' Dirty Bastard. "It wasn't the record company who suggested I work with ODB," she says. "They were like, 'Who?' They said, 'Rap is a fad. Why do you want to associate yourself with this?', and that certain people - I'm talking about big stars, multi-millionaire people who started out as rappers-slash-producers - would be 'working at McDonald's next year'."

    Those execs were wrong about P. Diddy, but that was another era and at the time those songs, while great, sat uncomfortably with her Sony image. Yet, talking to Mariah, it's clear that she loves hip-hop. She enthuses about staying up late for DJ Red Alert's radio show ("It was part of the soundtrack to my childhood"), obscure New York trio Whodini, and Sugarhill Gang's landmark "Rapper's Delight" ("We all bought it and memorised it").

    When Mariah talks about "Dreamlover", and its sample from "Blind Alley", she says that Q Tip from A Tribe Called Quest once told her: "You do realise you're the catalyst for all this stuff?" He was referring to both r'n'b's domination of the charts, and the way all r'n'b singers now employ rappers to appear on their records - a trend that has filtered all the way down to Elton John, whose sepulchral collaboration with Tupac, "Ghetto Gospel", recently topped the charts.

    Mariah's best old songs, like "Dreamlover", "Fantasy" and "I Know What You Want", symbolise everything that's great about the genre. Meanwhile, the new album's highlights, such as "We Belong Together", "It's Like That" and "One and Only", have seen her reach new creative heights. Has anyone put her voice to better work than Kanye West has for the chorus of "Stay The Night"? Make no mistake: if Phil Spector or Berry Gordy were starting a label today, they'd be as interested in working with Mariah as they would with Beyonce.

    Approaching the end of our interview, I finish by asking how and why she keeps going, since there's little to gain and so much to lose. Despite its success, the new album will never match the tens of millions she sold in the Nineties - the record industry has changed so much. After nearly choking on the popcorn she's been nibbling, she hesitates and then qualifies her answer, saying, "I don't want to come across as preachy." She just wants to convey how much she's learned from God, The Bible and the True Worship Church, which sits opposite a housing project in Brooklyn. "People still don't believe I really go there," she says, despite her pastor, Reverend Dr. Clarence Keaton, appearing on the new album's final track, "Fly Like A Bird". Mariah thinks the line he quotes from Psalms 30.5 - "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" - is particularly pertinent. "It's a message needed so bad at one point in my life," she says, "and nobody said it. That's why I was so grateful when he thought of that passage."

    On today's News segment of MTV UK, Mariah was featured in a brief interview and behind-the-scenes clips from the set of the "Get Your Number" video were shown. Here's the transcript of the interview.

    Mariah Carey's had massive success with the "The Emancipation of Mimi," dubbed "The Return of the Voice" but it seems that we're now ready for the return of the body. MTV News prepared for some flesh and sneak on the set of her latest video for "Get Your Number"... and it seems Mariah's having some issues with director Jake Nava.

    "I do love the English. Jake Nava on the other hand, I don't like at all. Hahaha! (in her best British accent) No, Jake is very cool. We have fun you know, I think this whole thing, I think he went into this thinking I was gonna be like a complete, horrific diva as opposed to just like a somewhat horrible diva.

    Jake: "Dont be like that Mariah!"
    Mariah: "Did somebody tell you what I said about you in the dressing room? Get out of here, you're ruining my make-up! (laughs) I told you the pervert always does... coming in the room when I'm dressing and everything. I'm gonna sue him!"

    Watch the video at the MTV UK site here

    Also from MTV UK News:

    Mariah Carey Gives Out Her Number!
    Mariah Carey has admitted that she gives out her phone number too easily, but says she would never ask for a guy's number.

    The singer was talking to MTV News on the set of her new video, Get Your Number, which she wrote with Jermaine Dupri. She said: "He really wanted it to be coming from the girl, like 'can I get your number' to the guy. But in all honesty that would never be me!"

    She went on to add: "I give my number out to too many people. That's why I have to keep changing it. I'm due for a change of number soon!" Bad news if you've been texting Mariah.

    Thanks to all the people who e-mailed us with ideas and motivation to help "Shake It Off".

    Hot 100 Shocker: Kanye Dethrones Mariah (Billboard Music News)

    Bolstered by a surge of radio support, Kanye West's "Gold Digger" featuring Jamie Foxx vaults into the top slot on the Billboard Hot 100, ending the summer-long run of Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together." The chart's biggest airplay gainer, "Gold Digger" jumps 19-1, leapfrogging numerous contenders for the summit, including Carey's own "Shake It Off," which remains No. 2 for a second week.

    "We Belong Together," which falls to No. 4 in its 23rd week on the Hot 100, can certainly claim the title as the song of summer 2005. The title held the chart's No. 1 slot for 14 of the last 15 weeks, unseated for just one week by "American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven."

    Going For The 'Gold': (Chart Beat Bonus)
    Elvis Presley fans can rest easy -- at least, for this week. The speculation that Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off" (Island) would advance to No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100 came to naught. Had the song reached the pinnacle, it would have been Carey's 17th No. 1, putting her into a tie with Presley for the second highest total of chart-toppers in the rock era.

    "Shake It Off" remains in second place while a surprise contender rockets to pole position. "Gold Digger" (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam) by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx surges 19-1, a move that puts the song into the record books as the fifth biggest jump to No. 1 in Hot 100 history.

    Mariah Carey Makin' It Happen // 12:28 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    Aiight sohh, Mariah Carey - the girl who supposedly had the comeback of all comebacks with The Emancipation of Mimi is really doing the damn thing. Yea, yea we all know 150 million albums and singles sold world wide blah blah blah, a full album of number ones, records broken and created since her days as the first lady of Sony but it is something to be said when your album has spent 21 weeks on the Billboard charts and has yet to dip lower that the #5 position.

    To date, Carey has moved 3,189,635 units of Mimi according to SoundScan. Her new single "Shake It Off" seems to be replacing the long standing #1 hit "We Belong Together" as the single of choice on MTV, VH1, Billboard Hot 100 Airplay etc.

    With the first three releases being mega hits off the cd, the only person who would be more excited than Carey herself would be the worlds most under rated producer Jermaine Dupri! Dupri produced the first three hits. However there is still more noise to be made as the peeps over at Island Def Jam prepare to release the Kanye produced "Stay The Night".

    When asked about all the hoopla over The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah takes a cue from LL Cool J and responds, "Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years."

    Don't get too cocky chick... we all remember "Glitter".

    Note: The aforementioned article from SOHH suggests that "Stay The Night" will be the 4th single released from "The Emancipation of Mimi." However, an official announcement has yet to be made by Mariah's camp.

    Coldplay Bashes Mariah Carey // 5:29 PM EST Updated by Liron

    As previously reported, Chris Martin of Coldplay lashed out at Mariah in his band's concert last night. Below is the Village Voice review of the event:

    Concert Review:
    Coldplay
    Madison Square Garden
    September 6, 2005

    (...) The only really bad obnoxious of the show came during [lead singer Chris] Martin's false-humility stage-patter bits. It was bad enough when he said self-effacing trash about only having two hits (a blatant lie), but he insufferably thanked the crowd for paying attention to the band even though they didn't have any dancers or explosions, even though "we have to rely on our hands and feet." I don't know if this was a cheap crowd-pandering move or if Martin really thinks his music is more genuine than Mariah Carey's or Nelly's or whoever's just because he knows how to play guitar. Coldplay's best singles ("Clocks" especially) are great in part because they absorb the swooping overblown textures of dance music without locking into the beat, adding all these lovely little understated electronic flourishes to songs that were already pretty gorgeous. So it's not like they're Mississippi Fred McDowell or anything, and Martin shouldn't try to fool himself or anyone else that they are. Besides, the success of Coldplay's show had a lot to do with their lighting crew, who deserve an Oscar or something.

    "She floated like a 'Butterfly' and stung heavyweights like Hilary Duff, Destiny’s Child and Green Day like a bee. Mariah’s got a five-octave range and she's not afraid to use it. And when the battle got tough, this seasoned pro was ready to 'Shake It Off' and keep on swingin'."

    Coldplay's Chris Martin on Mariah // 3:24 AM EST Updated by Liron

    He’s Humble, and Proud of It
    Chris Martin was onstage at Madison Square Garden, humbly explaining how honored he was that his little band, Coldplay, had filled up such a big venue. “We can’t rely on fireworks and smoke and mirrors,” he said, although by “can’t” he seemed to mean “don’t need to.” Which undermined the humility more than a little.

    He boldly -- — although not, perhaps, prudently -- — continued, “If we looked like Mariah Carey, we’d sell 25 times as many records, which would be a lot.” And the crowd was left to puzzle out the details on its own. (Would that mean all four members had to look the same? Or would one become the kinky-haired singer from the “Vision of Love” video, while another wore the cool airbrushed tank -top from the cover of the “Rainbow” album?)

    Mr. Martin noted, too, that if the band resembled Ms. Carey, “We could date people who looked like Tom Cruise.” As everyone in the arena surely knew, he is married to Gwyneth Paltrow, and it wasn’t quite clear if he considered the hypothetical trade-off a step up or a step down.

    During Tuesday night’s concert, Mr. Martin showed off all the things he does so well: he can belt out a soaring rock ballad; he can turn piano-playing into a form of aerobic exercise; he can lead a sing-along as if he were born to do it. But the brief, disastrous Carey-Cruise monologue also illustrated the thing he does least well: he’s terrible at feigning humility.

    Jasmine's Juice: Mariah's L.A. Crib Is Ridiculous! // 12:28 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    Staying in Mariah's house in Bel Air (I've always wanted to say that - shallow? Yes I know), was mind-blowing. I've been lucky enough to experience some stunning moments in my life but her LA crib was ridiculous!

    Set high in the hills with panoramic views of the whole city, the humongous house is surrounded by palm trees and tranquillity for her all-night recording sessions in the in-house studio. Huge black sliding back doors lead to a landscaped garden and hot tub with pool, and it's here that I did yoga in the sunshine daily and took MC's dog Jack for "walkies" (or "splashies" if he takes over!).

    One of MC's neighbours, Eddie Murphy was kind enough to offer to show us around the "neighbourhood" too, so I'm like a jibbering groupie – I used to love Coming to America! I don't think he appreciated me yelling: 'It's the Prince of Zamunda' at him all the time tho! Hee hee!

    --From Manila Bulletin: If the Philippines only had a true pop music chart published nationally (just like the United States’ Billboard Hot 100), then the ever-popular rock band Parokya ni Edgar would have stayed at the number one spot not only for weeks, but for months – even outlasting Mariah Carey’s currently unbudging stay at the pinnacle for 14 weeks now!

    --From Casper Star Tribune: Radio Al Mahaba, which means "love" in Arabic, went on the air on April 1. It broadcasts from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It has a 120-mile reach from central Baghdad. Among talk shows are blocks of Middle Eastern and Western music, including the Lebanese singer Fairuz, Mariah Carey and Kurdish folk singers.

    --From St. Petersburg Times: Odds and Ends. The Star-Spangled Banner was played three times before Bishop McLaughlin's game. Fans mistakenly stood for Whitney Houston's version of the national anthem when it was played from a neighbor's yard nearby then stayed on their feet when it was sung at the game. No sooner did it end than the anthem started again from the same neighbor's yard, this time sung by Mariah Carey.

    Mariah Carey: Oh my goodness, Hey! First of all, I have to thank God, because without God, I wouldn't be standing here today. Thank you Lord for carrying me through everything I've ever been through.

    I'm just so grateful to everybody for all the support with "The Emancipation of Mimi", thank you L.A Reid, genius - I love you, thank you Mark, thank you Benny Medina, thank you so much to everybody out there and most of all, to all my fans who've been devoted to me and never ever stopped. Interview Transcript:
    [After winning World's Best Selling R&B Artist...]
    BBC2: Mariah Carey went on to win the best-selling pop female, most played single and female entertainer of the year giving her 4 awards on the night. She clearly had quite a handful when I caught up with her backstage.

    With an award ceremony that basically rewards records, the biggest selling female artist of all time, [otherwise you're gonna do well] but coming scoopful... that's pretty remarkable.

    Mariah Carey: You know what? It's been a blessing. This whole year really has been an incredible gift. I'm just grateful to God for everything that I have and it's prayers answered and so it's a lovely thing.

    BBC2: "The Emancipation of Mimi" came out at the back of a wobbly time for you. See it just kicked in and just shown the world that Carey's back with a vengeance.

    MC: You know what it is? I never went anywhere. It's all about I think careers that are lasting have to go through peaks and valleys and then you appreciate things more when you get to a really great place like this and I think that I wouldn't have been able to get to this place without going through difficult times 'cause it helped me creatively.

    BBC2: So how do you rewind, sorry, unwind after this?

    MC: Probably go home and have a little dunk in the hot tub and who knows.

    BBC2: So milk and cookies I understand are a nice welcome.

    MC: Milk and cookies are always fantastic. a little morsel of a cookie though or we can't wear the ensembles.

    BBC2: Let me tell you the ensemble is looking fine this evening! Thank you so much for talking to me. Congratulations really!

    MC: Thank you so much.

    In Touch & Mariah's Hot VMA Party // 2:13 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    It was the most exclusive event of the year. With her new album, The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey's career is hotter than ever, so it was only natural that the year's biggest singer would join the hottest magazine to throw the the best bash of the VMAs. On August 26, In Touch was proud to present Mariah's pre-VMA party.

    In the penthouse suite of South Beach's Raleigh Hotel, Mariah greeted friends like Jermaine Dupri for the intimate gathering that benefitted Operation Smile, a charity that helps children in need of corrective surgery. With strong hurricane-force winds engulfing South Beach, Mariah exclaimed, "I am so glad everyone made it!"

    "Such a deserving charity as Operation Smile and such a gracious star like Mariah Carey made the event truly special," says Richard Spencer, In Touch's editor-in-chief.

    Everyone got moving on the dance floor to the music of hot DJs Jus Ske and Mr. Mauricio - and Mariah danced the night away with her guests. "I felt like I was dancing in one of her videos!" said one partygoer.

    The temperature rose even more when Operation Smile's spokesperson, Jessica Simpson, arrived. "I love Mariah," Jessica told In Touch. The two stars lit up the room, talking and laughing together. Mariah, who looked stunning in a Roberto Cavalli dress, partied into the wee hours of the morning. As night turned into day, it was clear that Mariah Carey had left an indelible mark on Miami and the 2005 VMAs. It's fitting, since after all, 2005 truly has been Mariah's year.

    Jasmine's Juice: "What Goes Around, Comes Around" // 1:45 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    I then crossed the significant body of water called the Atlantic for the second time in two weeks to shoot some stuff in ‘Los Scandalous’ or Los Angeles – as it's more commonly known.

    The funny thing is that here in LA, hip-hop heads are all laughing at Eminem ‘cos he just won’t let go of his obsession with Mariah Carey. I'm sure you've heard by now that he's playing a voicemail message she supposedly left on his phone years ago to his concert goers. What a dumbass! Since she's right at the top again – where she belongs – he's tryin' to stay associated with her. Men out here are going: "Wow, Slim musta caught feelings for Mariah hard to have him not able to let go of her." What's even funnier is MC's been showing us the constant pages that he bombarded her with and all I can say is he was caught up something stoopid! Only thing is, MC is way too classy a lady to air her bizness in public. However you know what they say... 'what goes around, comes around,' who knows when you may see some "Eminem text messages" in someone else's tour, hint hint! Slim Shady — you're gonna be sicker "than a set of twin babies"!!!

    No Carey On With Eddie // 11:10 AM EST Updated by Liron

    Singer Mariah Carey has poured cold water on the rumours she and funnyman Eddie Murphy are dating.

    Eddie, who recently split from his wife, has been repeatedly photographed looking intimate with the diva, even holding handswith her at the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami. But while the world presumed love was in the air, it seemed the pair were simply talking business.

    Eddie is expected to appear in Mariah's next music video while she is to feature in one of his films.

    An insider said: "She has been quite bothered by the rumours because there is nothing going on. "They are just good friends and it is actually a working relationship."

She whispered a bit, but mainly wrote things down for her assistants." Divine!

    Mariah, First Female Lead Artist To Occupy Top 2 Slots on Billboard Hot 100 // 1:15 PM EST Updated by Lynn

    SENSE OF BELONGING: For only the sixth time in the history of the Hot 100, the top two positions on The Billboard Hot 100 are held by the same lead artist. It is the first time that the lead artist is a woman, as Mariah Carey remains No. 1 for the 14th week with "We Belong Together" (Island) and rises 4-2 with the follow-up, "Shake It Off."

    Carey is the first lead artist to occupy the top two slots since July 2004, when Usher held the top two spots with "Burn" and "Confessions Part II." Before Usher, OutKast held the top two positions with "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move" at the end of 2003 and the beginning of 2004. Prior to OutKast, Nelly was in first place with "Hot in Herre" and was also the runner-up with "Dilemma," which featured Kelly Rowland, in August 2002.

    The only other lead artists to be No. 1 and No. 2 at the same time were the Beatles in 1964 and the Bee Gees in 1978. The Beatles held the top two positions for 10 consecutive weeks, starting the week of Feb. 22, 1964, when "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" were the top two songs in the nation. The week of April 4, 1964, they occupied the top five spots.

    Carey's top-two feat is just part of her chart story this week. "We Belong Together" is on top for the 14th frame, putting it into a five-way tie for the second-longest running No. 1 of the rock era. The all-time champ is another Carey single, "One Sweet Day," recorded with Boyz II Men. That superstar collaboration was No. 1 for 16 weeks in 1995-96.

    "We Belong Together" joins "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston, "I'll Make Love to You" by Boyz II Men, "Macarena" (Bayside Boys Mix) by Los Del Rio and "Candle in the Wind 1997" / "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" by Elton John in second place. "We Belong Together" is the first song to remain No. 1 for 14 weeks since Elton's memorial single for Princess Diana in 1997-98.

    The 4-2 move of "Shake It Off" makes Carey a likely candidate to replace herself at No. 1. That would give Carey her 17th No. 1, and tie her with Elvis Presley for second place on the list of artists with the most chart-toppers in the rock era. It would also make "Shake It Off" the song most likely to give Carey more total weeks at No. 1 than Presley, and thus the most weeks at No. 1 of any artist in the rock era. The current standing: Presley 79, Carey 75.

    WOMEN HAVE THE POWER: The lengthy visit of Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" to the pole position on The Billboard Hot 100, added to the reigns of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" and Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven," has resulted in the longest shut-out of men from the No. 1 position in the rock era.

    Mariah Matches Hot 100 Milestone // 11:55 AM EST Updated by Lynn

    With "We Belong Together" notching a remarkable 14th non-consecutive week at No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100 and "Shake It Off" jumping 4-2 on the main singles chart, Mariah Carey becomes just one of six acts to hold the top two positions on the Hot 100 since the chart's inception in 1958.

    The feat puts her in the company of Usher and OutKast, who joined the club last year, Nelly (2002), the Bee Gees (1978) and the Beatles (1964).

    "Shake It Off" is the Hot 100's greatest airplay gainer for the week and jumps 3-2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and 13-8 on the Pop 100 tally. The ubiquitous reign of "Together," meanwhile, is starting to wane, as the cut drops 1-4 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list after 14 weeks on top, and 3-4 on the Pop 100.

    On the Hot Ringtones chart, however, "Together" rebounds 2-1, putting it on top for a fifth non-consecutive week. Its reign there was interrupted last week by Bow Wow's "Let Me Love You" featuring Omarion, which returns to No. 2.

    With the rise of "Shake" on the Hot 100, the Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" featuring Busta Rhymes falls 2-3, but it holds the top slot on the Pop 100 for a sixth week. The Hot 100's greatest sales gainer, Missy Elliott's "Lose Control" featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop, rises 6-4.

    Mariah Carey caught up in mystery fire // 2:08 AM EST Updated by Liron

    Mariah Carey almost never made it to the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, Florida, on Sunday night (28 August 05) after she was caught up in a fire emergency in her Hollywood home just days before.

    Firemen reportedly had to wake the sleeping Carey and alert her to the seriousness of the situation after neighbours called to report a small blaze at the pop star's Bel Air home on 24 August (05).

    Fortunately for her, the fire was quickly extinguished and damage was minimal.

    A spokesman for the singer confirms, "There was a small fire... in the Los Angeles home that Mariah Carey is currently renting. Mariah was never in harm's way... No one was hurt."
