Carey For Chicago Follow Up (RUMOR Alert)
February 28, 2003
Curvy singer Mariah Carey is following in the footsteps of Welsh rose Catherine Zeta-Jones - by starring in the Chicago makers' next big screen musical.

Carey, who made her movie debut in fateful 2001 flop Glitter, has reportedly signed to star in a remake of Guys And Dolls - opposite action hero Vin Diesel.

And insider says, "For Guys and Dolls they wanted someone who can really belt 'em out - a trained singer.

"Mariah is the most successful female singer of all time so she should make the grade."

International News
UK:
#29 SOMEDAY (Resonance Q)
Big up to everyone at All Around The World records who read these words every week and take great delight in my ignorance or lack of appreciation of their latest releases. Actually just for a change this is an example of Eurotrance finally getting it right. Someday began life as a Mariah Carey song, appearing on her debut album. It was her third single here and charted in early 1991 in a dramatically remixed version after it had become clear that (at that time) Britain was failing to get to grips with the idea of this hot new American star. Despite heavy promotion the single crashed out at Number 38 and effectively derailed her career in this country for 18 months. Resonance Q actually turn the song into the club stormer it always should have been, bringing out the soul of the song rather than destroying it and proving that not all cover versions are lesser recordings than the original. Oh don't worry, I'm not going soft - there is worse to come.

Help A Fellow Mariah Fan
Darnelle wrote me the following e-mail, please read it and help him out!

"I'm writing to you because I need a little help. The largest radio station in San Diego (STAR 100.7) is having a contest for the next on air personality (or basically a DJ). Well, I sent in a demo tape and I was chosen to be on the radio tonight along with 3 other people show what I can do and how funny I can be! It will be between 5:30pm and 7:00pm tonight and I believe people can listen through there website at www.histar.com, all of our pictures will be on the website today and 2 people will be chosen to go onto the next round.

Tonight I will be talking about how much Mariah inspires me in addition to other things! It would be great to have the support of other lambs if I am one of the 2 people chosen tonight! The station doesn't not play Mariah often enough, however; some of her music fits there format and if given the chance I would love to play Bringing On The Heartache this weekend!

The reason I'm writing is to receive the support from other lambs, if they hear me on the radio (if I make it to the next round) they can vote for me on the website! I think my chances are really good because they keep taling about me on the radio and how good I am.

Thank you so much for any support that you can offer. And the number to the station is 619-570-1007!"

1st Tour Date Announced?
MariahCarey.com announced the following on the 'Tour' section of the site:

Date: 3/27/03
Location: Tempe, AZ
Venue: Bash On Ash
Notes: w/ Switchfoot

Notice this is on Mariah's birthday, it seems a bit too early for the tour to start (moreover Bash on Ash is a nightclub and Switchfoot is a rock band) so we'll have to wait for more details as to what exactly this is.

New Official Boy Remix by DJ Vice
Spooky21 writes: "I heard it today on Power 106 (top Hip Hop station) in LA this evening and it was awesome. It doesn't have any of the beats of the Cameron song and I think its better than the Cameron/Free version and the album version. its samples and really poppy song and its very good.
It came in number 5 on the countdown and all the DJ's were singing along.

Mariah Miracle
Mariah Carey made it "through the rain", and in December she made a chronically ill fan's wish come true. Caleb Boulter, 16, of North Conway, N.H. got to meet his idol. A short time later, he suffered a terrible setback. Now, Mariah talks to Access Hollywood about what happened, and how she helped Caleb "make it through."

"Mariah Carey is the best, greatest, most incredible, sincere singer that the world can imagine," said Caleb. But just hours after their meeting, he nearly died after suffering a severe seizure on the plane ride home. "Probably the reason why that seizure occurred was due to all the excitement of meeting Mariah Carey and going to the concert," claims Caleb.

That elation, coupled with severe turbulence, apparently set off the seizure, a symptom that, along with chronic kidney disease, Caleb often suffers from. His parents, Chris and Al, told Access that "Quickly it rose into a major seizure, Caleb was jerking wildly, out of control."

Caleb miraculously survived. When Mariah heard the news, she sent flowers and a note that said: "Dear Caleb, I hope you feel better soon. God bless and get well soon."

Caleb feels an incredible connection to Mariah's music, especially the song "Hero", which lifted him out of a dark time in his life. "It just helped me dig deep inside and realize that despite being a little different from the general population, I can still be a special person," said Caleb. "It gave him the extra oomph he needed to deal with the different issues in his life," added his parents.

Caleb was speechless when Access delivered one more special surprise from Mariah -- a videotaped message: "We love you Caleb, you're amazing, you're an incredible person, keep going."

MC Mentioned In Tommy Mottola Article
...But there were also the sanctioned leaks to the press. When Mottola divorced pop star Mariah Carey and she was negotiating her release from the Sony label, items ran in the press about his ex that Carey wanted dusted for Mottola’s fingerprints: Mariah was feuding with fellow Virgin Records artist Janet Jackson. Mariah threw a salt shaker at Mira Sorvino. Tommy was now training a 16-year-old singer who could be her next serious rival. Carey almost sued Mottola and Sony after it appeared that he arranged for some music she was using in a single from her first film to debut on a Jennifer Lopez album six months earlier. “He had an emotional response to her leaving him,” says a source close to Sony, “but she would call him after her crack-up for advice, and he would be there for her. He still holds a little bit of a candle for her.”

He told a friend he had a brief post-Carey fling with Jennifer Lopez, who records for the Sony label (Lopez has denied the two ever had a relationship). And then Lopez went and fell in love with Sean Combs. “He was bad-mouthing Puffy all over town,” says a longtime friend.

“When Tommy has it in for somebody he can be unbelievably petty. He’ll call maître d’s to make sure people aren’t given tables,” says an acquaintance. Mottola’s tactics were often brass-knuckle, but those who’ve known him for many years describe him as a gangster groupie who purposefully adopted the shiny-suited look of a Mafia lieutenant. “I think he created a persona that came back to haunt him when he needed to appear presidential,” says a source close to Sony.

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis About MC
The following is an excerpt from an interview Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis gave to The Network Magazine:

Q: What do you draw out of each artist when you're working with them?

A:It starts with inspiration, because we are songwriters and producers. The song has to be inspired from somewhere. We generally let the artist inspire the song and the direction that we go. Most artists would say, "Just produce whatever you all want to do." Nowadays, artists have a very clear-cut sense of what they'd like to talk about lyrically--the way they'd like their music to sound. Also, because now we have a pretty vast catalog, a lot of times artists will come with specific songs and say, "Do you guys remember when you did this song...?"

Mariah [Carey] is somebody who's like that. For instance, she will come to us and say, "Remember when you guys did 'Bended Knee'? Remember that one chord change there," or, "That one piano change there?" Or, "Maybe we can combine that with a little bit of something like you did." Artists now do that, where they'll go, "You know, I loved that song back in the day and if you guys could do this," etc.

MC Partying in NYC
HANGING out with Prince is a sobering experience. When the fuschia-loving funkster showed up at Rehab the other night, the club's owner sent over several magnums of Veuve Clicquot. Prince - a non-drinker - refused the bubbly not only for himself, but for the 50 pals he'd brought with him. After he insisted all alcohol be removed from their tables, the whole crew drank bottled water. Also on hand, but not part of the prohibition pack, were Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean and Antonio Sabato Jr.

Information About "Sweet Science"
On Friday, Feb. 21st, 2003 - TRL announced that Mariah has signed on the movie "Sweet Science". This is the first time it has been said affirmatively, up until now it has been labeled as a rumor. Here are some old articles (the "story" broke out on Feb. 20, 2002) that include some details about the film:

Sweet Science
In Theaters: Estimated for August 2003
Starring: Mariah Carey
Genre: Drama

Mariah Gets Back into Acting Ring
Feb 20, 2002, 10:45 AM PT
... She has signed to star in the pugilism drama Sweet Science, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Carey will play a strong-willed manager who recruits a young female boxer to take the not-so-glamorous boxing world by storm.

The project would reteam Carey with Anthony Esposito, the producer of her yet-to-be-released second flick, Wisegirls.

"I had such a great experience with Mariah Carey on Wisegirls that I wanted to make another film with her," Esposito gushes to the Hollywood Reporter. "Her performance in Wisegirls is outstanding...I feel [that] given the right role, the depth of Mariah's performance will make everyone take notice of her great acting ability."

Mariah's Next Movie: Not So Fast
A lot of press announcements came out this week regarding Mariah Carey's next movie deal. Producer Anthony Esposito told the willing and waiting wire services that Mariah would star in a new movie called Sweet Science, and play a boxing coach.

But hold it, say Carey insiders.

Apparently Esposito, who was the man behind Carey's Wisegirls, decided to make his announcement independent of having a deal, a signed contract, or even a distributor for Wisegirls. That's right. He's so busy getting ready to make a new movie that Esposito apparently still hasn't found someone to take on the one he's got in the can.

I will say that Esposito did tell me at Sundance he fully expected to make another movie with Mariah. He's been planning Sweet Science for some time.

But Carey has not agreed to anything. In fact, I doubt she will until she and her management sees how Esposito fares with placing Wisegirls.

Despite 'Glitter,' Mariah Carey's Movie Career Could Still Sparkle
02.20.2002 4:39 PM EST
Mariah Carey — whose recent Sundance Film Festival selection, "Wisegirls," appears to be a step toward saving the singer's acting career after the disastrous "Glitter" — has signed on for another indie drama.

In "Sweet Science," Carey will play a determined boxing manager who drafts an unknown female boxer to make a name for them both, according to the film's co-producer, Anthony Esposito.

After working with the pop star as the co-producer of "Wisegirls," Esposito said he believes in Mariah and likened her to Cher, who was at first ridiculed for her attempt at the big screen but went on to win an Oscar.

Esposito is still looking for a director for "Sweet Science," which is scheduled to begin shooting this summer. He is also still casting the role of the boxer, which he toyed with offering to Carey, but she would've needed serious training, he said.

Gary Goldman ("Total Recall"), Stan Seidel ("One Night at McCool's") and Rick Angres wrote the "Sweet Science" screenplay

Will Mariah Win Soul Train's Achievement Award?
Johannes told me that according to RockOnTV, Mariah will be getting a special award for outstanding achievements. This information has NOT been listed on the official Soul Train Awards site, so we'll have to wait until March 1st to see the awards. Mariah has already been confirmed as a performer.

The 17th Annual Soul Train Music Awards...will include Special Award presentations of the Quincy Jones Award for Outstanding Career Achievements in the field of entertainment (Female and Male) to world renowned musical superstar Mariah Carey and Def Jam Records' Hip Hop music superstar and actor LL Cool J.

MC On Jay-Z Special
Showtime aired a Jay-Z Special and Mariah was one of the people speaking about him. One thing she mentioned was that he listened to the Heartbreaker beat about 3 times, and went straight into the studio & recorded the rap, without ever having to write any lyrics down. I believe Mariah said "he killed it" (Thanks 'Shady Clown').

Mariah Carey Named 10th Most Elligible Single Female
Star magazine named Mariah Carey as its 10th most elligible bachelorette, and included the following ficticious singles ad: "Love takes time, DWF, 32, blonde/brown. Statuesque (5-feet-9, 140 pounds) solo singer looking to duet with a Dreamlover. OK, so I've been called a Heartbreaker by my ex-husband and datemates like Derek Jeter and Eminem. And I've had a few down spots, like being hospitalized for exhaustion and my less-than-golden movie 'Glitter'. But I have a lot ot offer the right guy who will Always Be My Baby. Must not mind legions of fans, whom I call my 'lambs' and spend oodles of time with on my website. Got what it takes? Give me a shot - even divas need love."

Nivea Wants To Follow Mariah Carey As A Fly
Teen Scene magazine asked Nivea whose wall she would land on if she were a fly. "Mariah Carey. She has been my main inspiration," Nivea responded. Since she couldn't decide whether she would rather land on the wall of Mariah's recording studio or in her home, she said she would just follow her around. Read more.

IKWYW Review
Busta Rhymes F/Mariah Carey "I Know What You Want" (J Records)
I've been sitting on this pick since Busta's new CD It Ain't Safe No More. hit the stores. But I'll credit KXJM/Portland PD Mark Adams with getting me re-fired up about this off-the-hook joint from Busta-Bus and the Flipmode Squad featuring Mariah. It's Busta at his best with MC delivering a soulful riff that works BIGTIME. Busta is on a roll while Mariah is heating up on the heels of her hot performance at the 2003 NBA All-Star Game in Atlanta. Her tribute to MJ was near-perfection and she and Busta slam-dunk this one! BET ON IT!

TTR Drops To #93 On Billboard
"Through The Rain" drops to #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and drops to #10 on the Hot Dance/Club Charts. Here's an explanation on how TTR is #1 on the sales chart (two weeks in a row) but fails to do well on the hot 100, taken from Billboard Daily News:

Kid Rock's "Picture" featuring Sheryl Crow or Allison Moorer is the Hot 100's fastest-growing track at retail and holds at No. 11. The single is No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Sales tally, behind Mariah Carey's "Through the Rain." Despite the sales, Carey's cut suffers from scarce radio airplay, causing an 84-93 tumble on the Hot 100.

"IKWYW" Debuts At #105
Busta Rhymes Ft. Mariah - "I Know What You Want" debuts on Bubbling Under the Hot 100 at #5 (equals to #105). Mariah is credited as a featured artist on the song which means IF the song peaks at #1, it WILL count as Mariah's 16th #1. The song debuted on the chart based on airplay (21.652 million impressions currently) alone. In order for it to rise higher on the chart, we have to request it!

"Boy" Gains Airplay
'Boy (I Need You)'s airplay increases every week and is now at a peak of 8.69 million audience impressions. Just like IKWYW, to help the song chart on Billboard, we have to request it! Michael suggests to concentrate on POWER 106 (L.A) & WKTU (N.Y) which affect the airplay immensly.

MC On International TV
The Oprah show with MC will air tommorrow- 21 Feb in South Africa. The channel is E.tv at 5:05pm (Thanks David)

The Mariah special "Shining Through the Rain" is airing over at MTV Philippines on March 4, 2003, Tuesday, at 6:00 p.m.

Cam'ron Says The NBA 'Robbed' Him During All-Star Weekend, Seeks Compensation
Mariah Carey may need a boy like Cam'ron, but evidently the NBA does not. The reason why, however, is up for debate.

Cam'ron is claiming that the NBA showed him — and rap in general — no love on February 9 when it stopped him from performing with Carey at a half-time tribute to Michael Jordan during All-Star weekend in Atlanta. The rapper says that Carey asked him to perform "Boy (I Need You)" with her at the show and that the NBA flatly rejected the idea, claiming first that they didn't want rap performed at their half-time shows, and later, that a civil suit the NBA filed against his former label, Untertainment, was the reason they did not want him to participate. The suit in question pertained to the unauthorized use of the NBA's trademarked logo in the 1999 promotion of Cam'ron's S.D.E. album. As a result, Cam's then-label was forced to pull the ads.

However, a spokesperson for the NBA credited an entirely different basis for the league's decision, stating that representatives from Cam'ron's current label, Island Def Jam, made them aware that Cam'ron had an outstanding gun charge against him, and that together, the NBA, Island Def Jam and Mariah Carey's label, Monarc, decided that it was not appropriate to incorporate him into the show. The spokesperson added that because the show had had already been billed as Mariah Carey's tribute to Michael Jordan, creatively the duet did not make sense.

The gun charge in question occurred when Cam'ron was pulled over for a traffic violation in New York in July (see "Cam'ron Arrested On Drug, Gun Charges"). After police saw marijuana in open view, they searched the rapper's vehicle and found a .22 caliber handgun. Cam'ron pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a forged fire department placard, and posted bail. At the time, Cam'ron's label issued a statement saying that it fully supported him and that it believed when the truth came out he would be vindicated.

Whatever the NBA's reason was for not including Cam'ron, he is clearly not happy about it. "There is nothing that will be bigger than a Michael Jordan tribute. I feel robbed," Cam'ron said. "Sitting up in a skybox, watching the All-Star Game, seeing the half-time show, I felt like I was supposed to be out there. I'm on a 40-city tour to promote the Diplomats album, so that means 40 cities are going to hear my opinion on this. This protest is just the beginning. I want compensation. I'm going to take this all the way to the championships."

ALL THAT CHILDHOOD PRACTICE HAS PAID OFF FOR PARK, HIGH SCHOOL ACQUAINTANCE

When he was in high school, Steve Park would often give his girlfriend and a friend of hers a ride home.

The East Northport, N.Y., native said he and his girlfriend were always trying to get the friend to go to the beach or to a movie.

But the friend always had a voice class or some kind of musical commitment and never went.

Park and girlfriend came to feel a little sorry for the friend, he says.

On Sunday, the NASCAR Winston Cup driver will have the chance to see first-hand how all those music lessons turned out for his old girlfriend's friend.

Since that friend -- Mariah Carey -- will be at the Daytona 500 to sing the national anthem.

"Even in high school, she knew she wanted to be a singer and I knew I wanted to race cars," Park said yesterday. "Now, we've both done pretty well. It's pretty cool."

Rapper Cam'ron Says N.B.A. Snubbed Him
    By Nolan Strong With Jigsaw
    Date: 2/13/2003 5:30 PM

Cam'ron claims the NBA snubbed him during the NBA All-Star game tribute to Michael Jordan on February 9.

The league initially agreed to let the Harlem bred rapper to rhyme while Carey sang to Jordan and then went back on their word.

Cam said that Carey had fought to get the rapper a spot during the tribute, but the NBA reneged, blaming a lawsuit against Cam's former label, Untertainment.

Cam said that the leagues commissioner, David Stern, never intended to let him perform.

"They told her yes until the last two days," Cam'ron told AllHipHop.com. "Then they brought up when Untertainment [used] the [NBA logo] for S.D.E. album. They said they sued Cam'ron when I had the gun in the NBA logo. It was really Untertainment and they were like, 'we don't care, its Cam'ron.'"

The NBA, which relies heavily on hip-hop in various marketing campaigns and commercials told Cam and crew that they were actually trying to stay away from rap.

"The NBA said that they don't do any rap so they didn't let me perform," Cam continued frustrated. "I mean they act like they are such an elite group of people- no disrespect because I have friends in the NBA. Its like realistically, they got people that beat they wives up, get caught with guns, smoking weed - all types of stuff - and then they say they [don't use] rap."

Jimmy Jones, co-CEO of Diplomat Records was equally angry. "David Stern, you get the third finger from the left or the right," Jones said snickering. "We're starting the F**k David Stern Campaign."

"The only reason they said "Yeah" is because Mariah Carey insisted. They were trying to tell her "No, we don't do rap. We are staying away from rap. To deprive me of the tribute to Michael Jordan, such a prestigious event at the All-star game, I felt like it was a miscarriage of justice," Cam continued.

The NBA was not available for comments at press time.

    Mariah's MSN Chat Transcript
    Mariah Carey
She loves butterflies, she calls her fans lambs and her latest release is "Charmbracelet." What else do you want to know about the world's best selling female performer? Ask Mariah Carey anything.

Last night, Mariah was a celebrity guest on MSN's chat. She chatted with the fans for about 30 minutes and answered interesting questions. She talked about "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" most likely being the 3rd single from "Charmbracelet", the duet with Justin ("Yours") being up to HIS record label and shooting a video with Busta Rhymes to "I Know What You Want". Here's the question that I got to ask MC:

    Liron_MariahDaily_MCRulz in Onstage1 asks:
Dear Mariah, you have such a huge catalogue. What are your top 5 all-time favorite songs of yours? - Love, Liron.

Mariah Carey says: Hey Liron! I know you! I would have to put them in categories if I were to do that because they're all different for me but I guess we could start with "Underneath the Stars," "Saving Grace," "Vanishing," "Fantasy with ODB," and "Clown."

Mariah Carey Says She Doesn't Want A Boyfriend Yet
Mariah Carey says she doesn't want to have a boyfriend at the moment as she continues her comeback from a breakdown last year.

She's posed for a series of photographs appearing in the new edition of Vibe magazine.

In an interview she says in real life she's a prude and nothing like her sex-kitten alter ego.

Pictures in the magazine show her bra-less as she unbuttons a micro-mini skirt and tight black jacket to reveal her tan lines.

"It's just me playing dress up," she said.

Daily Mirror reports Mariah as saying she received "a lot more" than the reported £30m pay-off from her record label EMI

The singer denied she tried to commit suicide last year, but said her childhood had been "no picnic". "I was the one calling 911 when I was a six-year-old and there was stuff going on in the house."

She says she was disappointed with her debut film Glitter, which was panned by the critics. But she says she hopes her latest comedy, Wisegirls, in which she plays a drug-dealing waitress, will do better.

"Celebrity stuff is fluff. None of it is real at the end of the day."

    Tommy Mottola Surfaces
Meanwhile, former Sony CEO Tommy Mottola surfaced last night at the UJA dinner for record biz lawyer Joel Katz (see yesterday's column for Katz's back story).

Mottola, who was never much for showing at industry functions, turned up with his wife, Mexican soap star Thalia. He was described by those who spoke to him as "approachable" and not surrounded by his usual phalanx of bodyguards. Of course this is what happens when honchos are deposed. Suddenly they're very friendly.

Katz's dinner was notable for attracting a huge crowd of record-industry heavyweights, including the whole gang from moribund Virgin/EMI Records (Matt Serletic, Dave Munns) and about 30 of Katz's colleagues from the Atlanta law firm of Greenberg Traurig.

RCA/J Records impresario Clive Davis made a lovely and articulate speech about Katz from the floor. But the real showstopper was Lava/Atlantic's Jason Flom, who did so well as the night's Georgie Jessel that he may have a career doing Friars Roasts.

No one asked Mottola about all the Michael Jackson news, but even more intriguing is how he feels about his ex, Mariah Carey, doing so well in her current incarnation.

Carey is managing to sell copies of her Charmbracelet album despite a bad industry recession right now. And guess what? A duet she recorded with Busta Rhymes, called "I Know What You Want," is turning into a hit after months of hiding out on Busta's latest album.

Mariah is also photographed in a men's mag this month looking foxier than ever. Her new video is said to be a jab back at Sony and Mottola. The girl is resilient, that's for sure.

As for Mottola, he's reactivated his Champion Management company, which was his before he took the reins at Sony 14 years ago. The question is: Did Champion really ever disappear, or was it waiting there all along? Some say the latter, since the Champion name was still registered to Mottola with an office address on East 55th St. in New York.

For years, Champion's biggest client was Mariah Carey, but recently — operating as Randy Hoffman Management — the company was down to about five clients. Mottola will have to sign some big names now to restart the office and make it into a power again.

Deal To Offer Live Concert CDs
    February 11, 2003
A group of music executives has started a new company that will allow concert-goers to buy recordings of shows as they leave the venue.

The new company, called DiscLive, is to be unveiled today.

The founders of the company believe they have developed a new revenue stream for the beleaguered music industry, but its success will depend on how many record labels and big-name artists it gets on board.

"There really is no downside to anyone," said Rich Isaacson, DiscLive's CEO and former president and co-owner of hip-hop label Loud Records, which was sold last year to Sony Music. "It's all incremental profit for the labels, because they don't have to put out a nickel."

There are still obstacles, he acknowledged, chiefly over copyrights held by the music labels. Record companies are not known for budging when it comes to intellectual property rights.

"We're going to the labels as a distributor," he said. "We don't want to compete with them."

The company was founded by entrepreneurs Jake Walker and David Blanchard.

On the company's board are several prominent music execs, including Jerry Blair, president of Mariah Carey's label Monarc Entertainment

Various Reviews of M's NBA Performance
Mariah Performs MJ Tribute Tears were brought to many, including Barkley and Johnson, when the stirring Chicago Bulls theme music preceded singer Mariah Carey's introduction of Jordan. The adoring crowd wouldn't stop cheering, though Barkley joked later that he was ''thinking more of Mariah's (flashy) skirt.'' (USA Today)

Halftime also featured a tribute to Jordan. Mariah Carey, wearing a skin-tight dress with a top designed like a Wizards jersey, bounced onto the court and passed the spotlight off to Jordan.
Carey introduced Jordan to the crowd as if she were the public address announcer at the United Center. With that dated Alan Parsons Project music playing just as it did for so many of Jordan's intros in Chicago, Carey looked out at the crowd at Philips Arena and yelled, "And at guard, 6-foot-6 from North Carolina, Michael Jordan!" (Newsday)

After a 3-for-12 first-half performance, Jordan was treated to a 20-minute halftime tribute by Mariah Carey as several video screens played a montage of Jordan's greatest hits in the background. Then, as All-Stars from both teams watched while sitting on the court, the lights were turned off and the familiar Chicago Bulls' intro music - the Alan Parsons Project's instrumental "Sirius" - played. Carey then announced, "From North Carolina, a 6-6 guard, Michael Jordan!" (NY Daily News)

At halftime, Mariah Carey belted out "Hero" and memorable moments from Jordan's career were shown as Bryant, Yao Ming and basketball's future stood and watched. (Yahoo! News)

The league paid tribute to the man rated by many as the best to ever play the game with a lavish halftime show, that included recording artist Mariah Carey dedicating her hit "Hero" to Jordan while performing in a number 23 Bulls jersey he made famous leading Chicago to six NBA titles.
As Carey called Jordan onto the stage, the crowd again rose to its feet and for nearly two minutes refused to let him speak. (Reuters)

And perhaps the biggest highlight took place at halftime as Jordan was serenaded by Mariah Carey singing "Hero." Then the 23 other All-Stars and more than 20,000 fans stood for several minutes in salute to one of the greatest figures in American sports history. (Black Voices)

At halftime, singer Mariah Carey wore a stylized, body-hugging Chicago Bulls No. 23 gown and paid tribute to Jordan through her hit song "Hero." No. 23 never looked so good. (The Philipine Star)

Adam Sandler was interviewed by Access Hollywood before the performance and said he knows Mariah's going to do great (Thanks Deus)

Winners: Mariah Carey. Jahidi White might not have looked so good in a slinky full-length Wizards No. 23 jersey, but Carey, um, did it justice ... A touched MJ, whose halftime speech was most memorable for its "Now I can go home and feel at peace with the game of basketball" kicker.

Loser: Kool and the Gang. It probably wasn't their fault, but did they have to play music over the pregame player intros? Both fans and players lose out.

Mariah: Hi *high note*! Yeees, helllloooo! Hey lambs, I just left the nice All-Star game and I had a really good time. I'm just calling to thank everybody who went out and bought the nice "Through The Rain" single and things of that nature, and, I wanted to say that there were some really really really sweet fans that I have met this week, umm some girls that came to the All-Star game and were waiting outside, they got sold some fake, dumb tickets from some idiots that I'm really mad at - They, they stole money from those girls and it was fake tickets but fortunately, I was able to find them and meet them and it was a really nice moment. I got a beautiful fanbook the other day at one of the umm, one of the radio stations that I was at. But right now, I don't have Big Nasty here but I do have the infamous and world famous Randy Jackson who wants to give you all a message in song (and it goes: one, two, three)
Randy and Mariah (singing): "You're a shining star, No matter who you are..."
Mariah (singing): "Don't know the rest of the words.." *laughing*
Randy: What's up, what's up, what's up, what's upppp?? Come on, come on, make it real, whatever you're gonna do, y'all. Make it real, It's got to be real!
Mariah (singing): "It's got to be real"
Randy: That was a good song too, M..
    Mariah: Yes, it was.
    Randy: Yes!
Mariah: So say hi to the nice fans so they'll love you.
Randy: Hello fans, whatcha all doing? Come on now, I know you all love 'American Idol', come on! (Mariah laughing in the background) You know M is the first idol, you know what I'm saying? So you know come on now.
They're just trying to be like M, (-something-..... song), trying to be like M, trying to be like M!
(Mariah in the background: "Hey! Ohhh Randy, Ohhh dear")
Mariah: I am not feeding him a script! *Randy laughing* Randy, you keep doing your thing.
Randy: Yes, yes, thank you, M, Thank you fans.
Mariah: Yes, exactly, tell them all that you love them please!

About 10 minutes after releasing lackluster "The One" as the second single from Mariah Carey's current Charmbracelet, label honchos reneged on the decision in favor of "Boy (I Need You)." Good thinking. This relaxed slow jam gives the diva's career a nudge with its playful, sped-up chirp of the word "boy" throughout, which is positively infectious. Carey sings quietly alongside with stacked layers of harmony creating a surreal, swirling effect, until Cam'ron takes over at the midsection with the requisite rap. Structurally, "Boy" is more of a groove than a song. It really is all about the cartoony "boy" but it's a step in the right direction to keep Charmbracelet shining. CT

Mariah Performs Tribute To Michael Jordan
Mariah Performs MJ Tribute Tonight at the 2003 NBA All Star game, Mariah performed a tribute to Michael Jordan who's retiring from playing professional basketball at age 40. Mariah kicked off her performance with "Boy" (withot Cam'ron) wearing a red jersey and a mini skirt while MJ videoclips were in the background. Then Mariah came in a blue jersey-dress and sang "My Saving Grace" and the last part of "Hero" right after it. She then presented Michael Jordan who came on stage to give his goodbye speech. Check out pictures from Mariah's performance on Gallery 10 (Thanks Regine).

    Mariah Deejays For The Beat
Mariah in Atlanta Traffic jams brought Atlanta's All-Star weekend jamming to a standstill Friday afternoon, but a soothing and familiar voice was there to ease the frustration, courtesy of 95.5 The Beat. Songbird Mariah Carey popped into the station to play deejay for two hours. Sporting a Michael Jordan college jersey, she slipped listeners the skinny on the tribute she'll perform to the hoops great during halftime at the game Sunday night.

She also promoted her latest album, "Charmbracelet" and rang up Busta Rhymes, a co-collaborator on the album, for a chat.

No word if Carey later dropped into the Q100 studios to retrieve the partially eaten turkey sandwich she left there last fall. It later became an unsuccessful auction item on eBay.

Justin told me that Mariah was scheduled to be on 95.5 (The Beat) on 11:45am yesterday but instead she took over the airwaves from 4pm to 6pm.

    Mariah Talks About Tomorrow's Performance

In the morning at the V 103.3 interview she said that there's gonna be a compilation of MJ's greatest moments on screen while she performs she said, I presume to Hero. (Thanks Shezz)

Fred Bronson Predicts Top 10 For TTR
Next week's Hot 100 will bring another example of the disparity between sales and airplay, by the way. Mariah Carey's "Through the Rain" (MonarC/Island) only managed to peak at No. 81 as an airplay track. But the song is poised for re-entry next week, thanks to the late release of a commercial single. "Rain" has the potential to sell enough copies to trigger a re-entry in the top-10 of the Hot 100.

I will *try* to get it to her at the NBA All-Stars game in Atlanta on Sunday (I don't have tickets, so I will try and meet her outside). The theme of the fanbook is "Life Might as Well Be a Party with Mariah", and it's something to make Mariah happy, make her laugh. Here are the details:"

    -Make Mariah Laugh-
That’s the idea of this fanbook…so if you are going to send a letter, please do not send a 9 page story that will make Mariah sad. I am sure she loves hearing you’re stories, but save them for another fanbook. This fanbook is purely to make Mariah smile! Fill it with funny stories : ).

*”What was she thinking?”-The first section will be filled with Mariah photos, mostly candids, that have edited by the fans to show what they thought Mariah was thinking, or a funny caption. This is the main part of the book, so make send one in if ya got a little extra!

*The second section is the fan letters part

*The third section is poems, songs, art, etc.

Please send all entries to mariah_book@yahoo.com. All entries MUST be sent in by Friday, February 7th. Thank you much!

    Mariah... She's Back
After driving herself to the edge, Mariah Carey has returned with a new album and a new attitude.

By Kev Lewin & Ari Fischbach
Recording her new hit album under the the calming Italian sunshine of the island of Capri apparently had an effect on Mariah Carey, now triumphant and revitalized after a torrid period of time, when her movie and music careers practically collapsed.

Now, she's back! The pop superstar has a new album, Charmbracelet, that is at the top of the charts, and this time she's doing everything her way.

Many felt sure, about a year a a half ago, when Mariah was struggling with her own sanity after a breakdown left her craving some needy care, that her career was finished.Years of giving it all had taken their toll on her, and Mariah fell to a deep depression, for which she needed hospitalization.

After all, it had been nothing short of a 10-year-long roller-coaster in which she released album after album, coped with 20 hour days and a tough marriage to Sony Records boss Tommy Mottola. When she escaped from the gilded cage, or “Sing-Sing,” as she called the house they shared, she finally had the creative freedom she craved. But somewhere between the remixes and collaborations, she began to lose control.

When her Glitter didn’t sell immediately, Virgin Records––the label she joined after she left Sony––bought out her contract after less than a year. Several labels were courting her when she picked up and went to Capri to start working on Charmbracelet, which she calls “an intense turning point.”

Carey is signed with Island Def Jam now, where hip-hop impresario Lyor Cohen is banking on this record to be a huge success. The first single, Through the Rain, is already in heavy rotation, so it’s not as if he has to salvage a wreck.

So now, Mariah Carey feels great again ––and according to her, it's all thanks to recording her new album miles away from the hectic life she has known for the past decade, in rural Italy. There, she recharged her batteries, produced what she calls a great album and mused about her life. Now, she insists she's wiser, healthier––and raring to go for it all over again.

    INTERVIEW:
Q: You look great. Come on, what’s your secret?
A: I’m taking care of myself.

Q: You obviously learned a lot from your ill health last year.
    A: Oh yeah. I’m a lot healthier.

Q: So much has been said about your exhaustion, the breakdown, the hospitalization. What was really going on?
A: Well, it was less of a breakdown and more of a physical situation. If I didn’t allow you to sleep, and you worked 20–hour days for two months, you’d suffer—I don’t care who you are. You physically cannot do it. And then, when there are paparazzi chasing you, hiding in the bushes, it’s tough. Literally, I was passed out.

Q: Why did you push yourself so hard?
A: I’ve been kind of self-parenting myself since I was little. My parents divorced when I was three: people do not really know about that. Kids who go through that don’t take care of themselves as well as they should. So that was my thing. I was more on a work spiral, a tangent that should have been more organized. I also own my own management company. I have my own stuff–– I control my own career and I produce and write all my songs. It’s tough.

Q: And you’re all over the tabloids.
A: Yes, of course. The tabloid stuff, that’s our society. We sell papers through shock. We love shock TV. We love reality TV shows, which are really reality-enhanced. We love that. We love trash talk shows. And we love to talk about celebrities...

Q: But you love all that, too, right?
A: It’s interesting. I find myself listening, going: ‘Who did what?’ I go, ‘Wait a minute, what publication was this in?’ I’ve learned that even the most respected newspapers in the world sometimes don’t fact-check. Sometimes they’ll misquote you, sometimes they’ll just write things.

Q: So, how do you get away from that?
A: You just do. I did my new album on a little island in the middle of the Mediterranean, right off of Italy, and I slept in the apartment above the studio. It was like this one little building on top of a hill and there is like no pollution, because you can’t drive around there. It was really nice, because it was just a fun environment. You can work hard, but in a stress-free way. I was working around the clock, but sleeping when I felt like it. It’s so gorgeous there. The ocean is just so amazing, and just these different little caves that have been there since the Roman Empire. It’s great.

    Q: Where was this paradise?
A:I can’t tell you because then it won’t be my place.

Q: Why are you calling the new CD Charmbracelet?
A: Charm bracelets are sort of sentimental objects that represent a person. My grandmother had one. It’s something that has a lot of sentimental value to me. So it’s like giving a gift to my fans in a way. It’s like each song has it’s own charm. It represents part of my life.

Q: We’ve seen two distinctly different sides of your music lately ––the uptempo hip-hop songs and the ballads. Which do you prefer?
A: I like both. I have a lot of different influences. I grew up mostly on R&B music. My mother is an opera singer. I’ve done a lot of different collaborations, like with Pavarotti. He sang Hero in Italian, and I sang it in English for his charity event that he has every year. I don’t want to limit myself to one thing; I’ve always liked working with all different types of artists.

Q: The first CD came out in 1990 and instantly made you a star. How has 12 years of life as a celebrity affected you?
A: I feel like I grew up in the public eye. I’m sort of eternally 12 in my mind. I don’t know, I didn’t really feel famous. It’s like I just started out, and it was about the music and the singing and all that stuff. The fame thing is just, I don’t know. I feel like the same person. And it’s a weird thing. I feel it when it’s invasive, when people are hiding in bushes and taking your pictures and you are in tabloids. But other than that, I don’t know. I feel close to the people that I meet who have grown up listening to those records. That’s how I chronicle my life. Someone would say, `Well, when did we do this?’ and I’ll be like, `OK, what album did I have out?’ It’s either what grade was I in, or what album did I have out?

Q: When you’re in the public eye, there’s a lot of pressure to look good. How do you stay in shape?
A: I go up and down. But when I get a chance to exercise, it’s not like it takes me that long. I don’t have one of those regims that some of those other people have. I do have a nutritionist that I’m talking to. For the most part, I go on the stationary bike and watch movies. It passes the time (laughs). I either have to be on the phone or watch movies. If I watch a two-hour movie, I get two hours of cardio, which is great.

Q: If we’re to believe the tabloids, your love life is quite complicated. What does it take for a guy to get a date with Mariah Carey?
A: People sometimes think they have to say things in a certain way to be cool or to look unimpressed. That’s nice, but I’m unimpressed. Who wants to be approached with some drab remark? I’m just like anybody else. It’s not like that big of a deal. I don’t have a big book of requirements.

Q: One final thing, what are you most excited about right now–– apart from your new record?
A: I have this artist I’m working with, and I’m really excited about her. She is 13 and she is really beautiful and has a really good voice. I’m looking forward to putting a CD out. She’s like my little sister, my secret little sister.

    Famous shoe obsessionists
Singer Mariah Carey says her shoe obsession started as a child. "There was a time in my life that I only had one pair of shoes. But the girl who had only one pair now has many. The thing about my shoes is they always hurt, but they look good."

    Driving Test
MOST celebrities have at one time or another seen the back of Paul Monroe's head. They have seen it nod, shake and loll from one side to the other.

But now thanks to the National Enquirer, the stars who were ferried about New York for seven years by chauffeur Paul get to see his face. And they also get to see his mouth, which is wagging up and down, desperate to tell "all".

From Stevie Wonder ("We had an SUV and a limo to transport them an all their gear"), through Mariah Carey ("two SUVs, four sedans, one Mercedes and a stretch limousine"), right up to David Letterman ("David has two cars commissioned every day"), we hear Monroe spill his guts.
