Sony Music Taiwan reported in their biography for Mariah, that Music Box sold
500,000 copies in Taiwan (the biggest international studio album ever). They also reported that when Mariah toured in Taiwan in 1998, she was presented with an 30x Platinum award (1,500,000 in sales) for all of her albums up to that point.
IFPI Taiwan certifications are based on the amount of records shipped to stores minus returns, meaning if there are many copies of an album on the shelves at retail and there is no demand for them, they will be shipped back to the record label and will not be counted in the certification.
Before 2002:
- Gold = 25,000 shipped to retailers and record clubs
- Platinum = 50,000 shipped to retailers and record clubs
Since 2002:
- Gold = 10,000 shipped to retailers and record clubs
- Platinum = 20,000 shipped to retailers and record clubs
