WELCOME
Like Mariah would say of her personal life, her album sales and chart success have also been 'unparalleled.' She's had stratospheric peaks, valleys and everything in between over the course of her career, spanning nearly two decades. In this section, I will post/archive chart, certification, and sales information for upcoming and past releases from credible sources.
If you have any questions or suggestions regarding Mariah's chart and award history, email me at michael@mariahdaily.com.

New Certification Levels Around The World
|
The IFPI has published an updated list of certification levels around the world. Sweden is the only major country to have changed in certification levels, since the last time I posted about certification levels. Now Gold in Sweden is 20,000 and Platinum is 40,000. Some good news about Sweden's music market is that now album downloads will be included in certifications. Now the US, UK, Germany, Sweden and Norway are the only countries to include album downloads in album certifications, hopefully other countries will follow suit, soon.

Mariah Carey's complete catalogue Soundscan sales as of: 12/31/06
|
Hey, Everybody. Jason, from the Looking In blog section of this site, got a hold of Mariah's total catalogue Soundscan report and sent it to me to share with everyone. The report includes; album sales, physical single sales and even her video sales, that total 67,418,426 units as of December 31st, 2006. If we were to include digital album/single sales, record club sales, sales for her debut album and sales her singles pre-Soundscan era (March of 1991), Mariah's US career unit sales are easily over 80 million, with shipments probably close to 90 million. I'll stop writing now and let you see the Soundscan report for yourself, here.

All I Want For Christmas Is You has passed 400,000 copies in the UK!
|
|
According to Mariah Connection, All I Want For Christmas Is You has sold 405,901 copies to date. The single was certified Gold (400,000) in the UK by the BPI in December of 1994. If sales continue to do as well as they have this year for the next couple of years, Mariah could have her first ever Platinum (600,000) single in the UK.
Thanks to: Mariah Connection and Marc.

I got the idea to make this chart showing Mariah's biggest world hits by the poll about Mariah's upcoming single on the News page. This chart shows Mariah's biggest hits overall and her biggest lead singles.

UK Airplay Peaks added.
|
Hey, Mariah chart fans A chart friend of mine sent me airplay peaks for Mariah's singles in the UK. However, chart peaks for the Mariah Carey singles and her singles released between 1999 and 2002 are missing. As soon as I find information for those singles, I'll be sure to write a blog entry (like this one) about them being added to the site. UK Singles Page Thanks: Brian/BoroButch

What singles kept Mariah's #2 Billboard Hot 100 singles from #1?
|
Hey, Mariah chart fans I know some people would like to know which songs kept Mariah's #2 singles from being #1 singles, so I decided to do a blog entry on the topic. As well all know, Mariah has four #2 Billboard Hot 100 singles; Can't Let Go, Endless Love, Loverboy and Shake It Off. Can't Let Go spent one week at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was kept from #1 by Color Me Badd's All For Love. Endless Love spent one week at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was kept from #1 by future collaborators Boyz To Men with their song I'll Make Love To You. Loverboy spent two weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was kept from #1 for both weeks it was at #2, by Destiny's Child's Bootylicious. Shake It Off spent six weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was kept from #1, by Mariah's own We Belong Together and Kanye West's Gold Digger.

The stuff is starting now

Mariah's timeless holiday classic All I Want For Christmas Is You has re-entered Billboard's Digital download chart for the third consecutive year, this week at #144. To date, All I Want For Christmas Is You has sold 331,484 digital downlads in the US. Hopefully we'll see the parent album ( Merry Christmas) will follow suit by re-entering the US, Japanese and South Korean album charts, where it's re-entered every year as well. Thanks to Bks and Jason (from the Looking In section).

Latest world certification requirements
|
Hey, Mariah chart fans I just found some information, that I think everyone would be interested in. These are latest certification requirements for all the countries in the world with national recording associations. France's certifications have been lowered a lot, due to few artists reaching platinum status in the current market. Silver is now 35,000 (was 60,000), Gold is 75,000 (was 100,000) and Platinum is 200,000 (was 300,000). If The Emancipation of Mimi was released this year, it would be certified as a Platinum album, instead of a 2x Gold album.

After performing 6 concerts in Japan to over 100,000 fans, The Emancipation of Mimi failed to re-enter the Japanese Top 300 album chart (around 500 copies for the #300 position).
To date, actual sales for The Emancipation of Mimi are well over 300,000, with an estimated 350,000 copies shipped.

Mariah's worldwide sales by region.
|
 (Click to open)
I made a pie chart of where album sales come from to show her strongest markets. I estimate that Mariah has sold around 125 million albums in North America, Asia and Europe, 3 million in the Australian continent (according to Sony Music Australia in 2005), 1 million in Brazil and around 9 million elsewhere.
The Emancipation of Mimi sold about 8.55 million in North America, Brazil, Europe, Asia and the Australian continent.
Using the percentages from the pie chart you will get sales of 8.9 million - 9.1 million, depending on which way you choose to do it, which comes close to the official figure of 9 million.

Just how big was Mariah in the Music Box era?
|

- In 1994, the pinnacle of Mariah's popularity in the UK, she sold over 2.4 million albums and singles (equivalent to over 8 million in the US), making her the #2 and #3 singles and albums artist of the year. Music Box was also the biggest selling female album in the UK of 1994.
- Music Box was the overall best selling album of 1994 in Australia.
- Music Box outsold Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard becoming the first non-Dutch female album to sell over 400,000 copies. Music Box still remains as the best selling album by a non-Dutch female artist (tied with Celine Dion's Falling Into You) in the Netherlands.
- Music Box was the first non-Swiss female studio album to sell at least 200,000 copies in Switzerland.
- Music Box was the first non-Taiwanese studio album to sell at least 500,000 copies in Taiwan.
- Music Box tied with Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best selling non-Japanese studio album of all time, until Mariah beat her own and Michael's record with Daydream.
- Music Box is the only non-Korean studio album to sell at least 1 million in Korea.
- From March of 1994 to November of 1994, Music Box was to #1 in over 10 countries, top 10 in at least 17 countries and sold an additional 10 million copies worldwide on top of the 10 million copies worldwide it had already sold.
- Music Box has reached Platinum status in 32 countries, translating to over 25 million in global sales to date, placing it among the Top 10 best selling female albums of all time.
