A Diva To Love, Just Not Enough Of Her
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 06-Jan-2013, 10:18PM EST
If you've taken the time to click on this article and read about Mariah Carey's recent Sydney show there are a few things you probably want to know right away:
1. "The voice" is still in tact. It's epic, it's huge, it's everything you would think it should be and then some. From the belty climax of "Hero" to that signature Mariah squeal that pierces the finales of songs like "Emotions," it's all there and showing little sign of wear. Just: wow.
2. People still love Mariah Carey. Actually love her. In fact, the 20-ish bloke sat next to Time Out decided he would scream this several times during the show - and he too could do the Mariah squeal. Excerpt from about midway through "Hero," the pre-encore show closer: “Oh my God, this is happening. She’s singing "Hero." I love you Mariah… I actually do. She has to hear me say this…" And then poof, he was gone… presumably to tell her.
3. It may be a self-aware act or she may just be car-razy (in a great way), but Mariah Carey actually says things like: "If someone doesn’t get me a glass of champagne in one-point-five seconds everyone is fired." This after she took a bite of Vegemite on stage. (Our friend next to us did not approve: "Don’t do it Mariah - it’s nasty.")
What did we think of the actual show?
If you’re a "Lamb" - a fan of Ms Carey - then you would have been in field-of-green-grass heaven. Carey was in full diva mode at Allphones, emerging from behind a screen in a shimmering, super-sheer dress looking ridiculously good; she stroked her hair all night like nobody’s business; and she brought a little girl on stage - a six-year-old named Mariah too - for the now requisite "huge star talks to cute kid" routine. And it was all very adorable.
And as we said earlier, there's that voice. We were digging it hugely on throwback renditions of "Always Be My Baby" and "Emotions," but even on her less vocally demanding recent gear – Emancipation of Mimi tracks like "Touch My Body" and the career-reviving "It’s Like That" - Carey sounded great.
She was also great with the audience. Sure, her stories rambled, but that’s the diva schtick - she's got all the time in the world, so pull up a stool and prepare to be regaled by a zig-zaggy tale of koala-hugging in the Gold Coast. (We think). Speaking of seating, to see Mariah Carey attempting to sit on a Roccoco-style lounge in that tiny dress while remaining "a lady" was something to behold.
When Carey was on stage, the show was gold. The problem was that she wasn’t on stage enough. There were long exits for pointless costume changes, stretches of filler with her dancers and a song from her backup singer Trey Lorenz (with whom she performed her cover of "I'll Be There"). In all, we'd guess she herself was on stage for a little over an hour - disappointing given that fans had to wait a long time for the show to start, sitting through an admittedly spirited DJ set from Mr Carey, Nick Cannon.
But we guess that's all part and parcel of being a diva. And all the little Lambs at Allphones Arena didn’t seem to mind at all.
Noise11: Mariah in Melbourne
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 06-Jan-2013, 11:55AM EST
A lot has been made of Mariah Carey's last couple of shows. Her Gold Coast show was plagued with sound problems and poor reviews popped up for both her Gold Coast and Sydney shows. I am here to tell you not to believe the tall-poppy-cutting hype.
Mariah Carey's enormous stage glowed with a glittering butterfly briefly before the diva entered the stage to play her "theme" Can't Take That Away via what looked like the bedroom of an Egyptian pharaoh appearing through a gap in the screen. "Melbourne, I've waited a long time for this" she said as the screens turned to a downpour of glitter (look, there was a lot of glitter, okay?). It had been fourteen years since she last entered a stage in the city.
The first thing I noticed is that this show was definitely not "flawless" as a rushed press release issued in damage-control after poor Gold Coast reviews claimed the Sydney show was. "Flawless". I had read the press release the day before the show hit Melbourne and expected disappointment. "Great," I thought. "Another pop show more choreographed than the ballet with as much emotion as a bag full of rocks." But much to my surprise, Mariah Carey doesn't do flawless. Not to take away from her well-documented incredible vocal gymnastic abilities, but just a handful of times throughout the 90 minute show she wouldn't quite hit a note or she would have to catch her breath or even just giggle into the microphone. It was these flaws that made this show actually feel like we were watching a real musician on stage with real personality. Carey's performance hadn't fallen into the stale ditch that so many pop performers seem destined to find themselves in - especially those who seek out stardom in the inoffensive pop your grandmother would approve of like Mariah Carey.
Though she did give the occasional nod to the modern music world - during the song My All, which Carey had introduced with an apology for canceling a Melbourne show during her 1998 tour due to illness, the synth-heavy backing band played tribute to Skrillex with a bit of "wub-wub-wub" as each dancer took a dance-solo in the remixed outro - much of the show was a nostalgic trip back to early 90s R&B-tinged pop and it showed in the audience who seemed to consist entirely of people aged between 30 and 40.
It wasn't just the songs that made this such an enjoyable show though. It was the quirks that come with putting a microphone in front of Carey's mouth. "Yes I know we have to move on, I just want this thing!" she shouted at a faceless person off stage presumably talking to her in her earpiece. She refused to continue until someone had brought her"this thing" a fan had given her earlier in the day. While we waited, she sang an a capella chorus of her song Thanks For Nothing after a fan in the front row had asked for it with their homemade banner and watched her fumble around telling someone backstage to hurry up. Eventually, a small object was brought to her. "Someone gave me this," she said hiding the as-yet-unidentified object in her hand. "I'm not going to do any endorsements, but maybe I'll just take a little sip." She let the cameras get a shot of the distinct VB logo plastered on the can she was holding and the crowd cheered. Who had expected to ever witness Mariah Carey taking a sip of VB in their lifetime? With a scrunched up face she laughed and said "I'm not really much of a beer drinker," and handed it back. It was moments like these that made the show entertaining.
Carey's long-time backing singer Trey Lorenz took centre stage for a duet the pair first did in 1992 as part of her MTV Unplugged album - The Jackson 5's I'll Be There. After that, Carey left the stage for a costume change while Lorenz sang Michael Jackson's Rock With You before introducing the band while they played an instrumental version of Prince's Let's Go Crazy complete with a nod to The Isley Brothers' Shout. "Dearly beloved, we are here to celebrate this thing called 2013!" he said in a slightly dorky fashion.
The set was noticeably lacking some of her biggest hits (including Heartbreaker and Fantasy) but her biggest - Hero - was much appreciated by the crowd. During other shows, this was the end of the main set, but not here. "We have to hurry up. They are very strict about their curfew here," she told the crowd, so straight into the encore she went. We Belong Together closed the show, complete with glitter cannons.
2013 marks 23 years since Mariah Carey's first single. That's a long time in pop diva years. I have to be honest, I hadn't spent much of those 23 years paying any attention to her, but after last night, even a jaded rock-pig like myself can appreciate why this instantly lovable, quirky and supremely talented performer is still around. Ain't nobody can sing like Mariah Carey and I'm glad I got the chance just once in my life to not only hear her hit those high notes, but really know that I was hearing her hit them then and there. I am not inspired to go and listen to her entire back catalogue, but I do find myself with a newfound respect for her. Mariah Carey, you're okay with me.

Review/Photos: Mariah "Wows" Sydney
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 05-Jan-2013, 3:58PM EST
The last time Mariah Carey put her high heels on Australian soil, she was promoting a little album called Butterfly. That was back in 1998, when Mimi ruled the charts and airwaves with an iron fist. While her star still shines as bright as ever, the future American Idol judge has spent the last few years concentrating on family rather than chasing hits. Not that Australia seems to have noticed. Despite the 15-year leave of absence, MC's show at Sydney's All Phones Arena sold out in four minutes. Other dates were subsequently added, and the pop legend suddenly found herself on a mini-tour instead of the originally-intended sunny vacation.
I've been following Mimi's Aussie adventure as part of the press junket since it began on New Year's Day with an intimate show on the Gold Coast (a resort town in Queensland, for you non-Aussies). What seemed like the perfect way to celebrate the start of 2013, and Mariah's long-anticipated return, turned out to be something of a misfire. The gorgeous 42-year-old sounded incredible - hitting notes not heard since her '90s hey-day - but the show was plagued by technical issues. There was a problem with the microphone in MC's ear and she let everyone know about it. At every available opportunity.
At first, the Lamb Whisperer's antics were hilarious and warmly embraced by the crowd. But by the time she started freestyling about not being able to hear and left the stage mid-song due to obvious frustration, it started to wear a bit thin. There were many wonderful moments - her festive medley and our unexpected introduction to Dem Babies stand out as highlights. But the quips about lighting, ill-fitting costumes and sore feet eventually took their toll. It didn't help that several songs were cut from the set list due to the sound malfunction. As one punter diplomatically put it: "At least she was better than Whitney" - a reference to Nippy's disastrous 2010 Australian tour. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
Maybe jet lag or the tiny venue burst Mariah's bubble on the Gold Coast, because a completely different woman wowed Sydney last night. Pop's Christmas Queen exuded happiness and calm, interacting with the audience like the members were old friends, and only occasionally playing up to her diva reputation with a comedic demand. There were exciting additions to the set list. She even looked different, moving around the much-bigger stage with complete ease and confidence. It was like mid-'90s Mariah stepped out of a time machine to reclaim her live performance throne.
After Nick Cannon warmed up the crowd with a DJ set that included PSY's "Gangnam Style" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," his wife emerged in a skin-tight, silver mini-dress, singing "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)." Mimi set the bar high with a pitch-perfect rendition. and was visibly touched by the response she received from the adoring sold-out crowd. She then dusted off a couple of big hits, shimmying to 2008 chart-topper "Touch My Body" and Emancipation Of Mimi mega-hit "Shake It Off." Her dancers did most of the moving, but all eyes were on Nicki Minaj's nemesis as she posed sexily and generally put on a mid-tempo R&B master class.
With the crowd now eating out of her be-jewelled hand, Mariah dialed it back a notch. Her iconic chaise-lounge appeared and she rested her diamante-covered heels while belting out a spine-tingling rendition of enduring fan favorite "My All." Of course, it eventually morphed into a terrible dance remix, but that beautiful ballad was an absolute highlight. If you needed proof that Mariah meant business last night, you got it when she emerged from a costume change - another plunging ensemble that displayed the timeless diva's ample assets - to sing 1991 classic "Emotions." That particular number was missing from the Gold Coast set list, which is a shame, because hearing it live is a thing of great beauty. Mimi hit all the high notes and even unleashed her trademark dog whistle. There might be some local pooches with minor hearing loss this today, but fans couldn't get enough of the superstar's vocal gymnastics.
Next stop on the nostalgic trip down memory lane was "Always Be My Baby," followed by Carey's 1992 MTV Unplugged cover of The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There." It was only appropriate that Mariah invited Trey Lorenz (her original duet partner) to join her. Last night's rendition was every bit as good as their '92 version. After bringing the crowd to their feet with an incredible note, the beaming pop goddess departed for another costume change while Trey entertained the braying Lambs with a cover of Michael Jackson's "Rock With You." He then introduced the band and dancers. While Mariah is a delightful performer, this was the only part of the evening that dragged and felt poorly managed. By the time MC came back, 15 minutes had elapsed - a substantial amount in a 90-minute concert.
At least she returned with a bang. "Obsessed" sounded brilliant live and, visually, Mariah camped it up with sexy poses and hair flicks. She was clearly in fine spirits when she tottered to the front of the stage in skyscraper heels to belt out a medley of vintage hits - "Can't Let Go" and "Love Takes Time" (both absent from the Gold Coast show) - before breaking into "Don't Forget About Us." She even thanked the crowd for making the song a #1 hit in Australia seven years ago, despite the fact that, um, it only reached #12. Another surprise addition to the set list was "It's Like That," her lead Emancipation Of Mimi lead single.
Finally it was time for The Butler actress to have a good chat with the crowd. Mariah brought out an adorable 6-year-old from Melbourne, also called Mariah. She praised the girl's "ensemble" and gave her a Santa's hat with the word LAMB written on it. Mimi then retreated to her trusty chaise-lounge to belt out Butterfly ballad "Close My Eyes," complete with a video collage of childhood photos. It was a beautiful moment that reminded fans how strong the diva's back catalog is. She can sing a 15-year-old album track and still leave the crowd spellbound.
As the show slowly reached its upbeat conclusion, Mariah minced on stage with a jar of Vegemite (Australia's favorite sandwich spread). Let's just say it's an acquired taste, and I'm not entirely sure if the regular Jermaine Dupri collaborator was joking when she quipped: "If someone doesn't bring me a glass of champagne [to wash away the taste] in 1.5 seconds, you're all fired!"
After surviving a brush with the local cuisine, Mimi soldiered on with a soaring rendition of "Hero," belting out her signature tune with confidence and making it a magical moment for the crowd. Fans were still coming to terms with it when MC dashed off-stage and returned for the encore with a glass of bubbles. She closed the set with "We Belong Together," showing off her full range and technical skill.
After the show, I ducked backstage and waited for Mariah to return to her dressing room. A couple of minutes later she trotted past with a gaggle of security guards and was greeted by the loud applause of crew, guests, family and media. She turned around, waved and beamed the million-dollar smile of someone who knows they just nailed it before continuing on her merry way. What a difference two nights can make.

Extend The New Year Cheer With Mariah Carey
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 13-Nov-2012, 10:20AM EST
In their biggest entertainment coup yet, Jupiters Hotel & Casino will start 2013 on the ultimate high note presenting one of the best-selling female artists of all time, Mariah Carey, in association with UAE at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Tuesday January 1, 2013.
The exclusive New Year's Day event will be the first of only two Australian stops for the superstar, as she brings her "MARIAH CAREY LIVE" show to the Gold Coast for her first ever concert on the Glitter Strip and her first tour Down Under in 14 years.
It has been two years since Mariah Carey has wowed audiences from the stage and she has chosen the Gold Coast's home of entertainment, Jupiters Hotel & Casino, to present her first performance back.
While it may seem like a lot of "firsts" for the singer/songwriter/producer, Mariah Carey has well and truly established her status as an icon of the music industry with over 200 million album sales throughout her career which spans more than two decades.
Mariah Carey will deliver a dose of diva, belting out some of her biggest hits including "We Belong Together," "Dream Lover" and "Fantasy," with exciting support acts to be announced.
Jupiters Hotel & Casino Managing Director, Aaron Gomes, said the property was beyond thrilled to be able to bring Mariah Carey to the Gold Coast as the perfect way to celebrate the end of what has been an entertainment-packed year, and the start of an even brighter year ahead.
"It has been a stellar year of entertainment at Jupiters Hotel & Casino with the opening of our new $20 million redeveloped theatre, two spectacular stage shows and an enviable line-up of the biggest international and national acts," Mr Gomes said.
"High-profile artists are an essential component of the tourism offering for the Gold Coast and we are thrilled to be supporting the destination as a must-see holiday hot spot this festive season with Human Nature coming over from Las Vegas to perform two Christmas concerts in Jupiters Theatre and now Mariah Carey on New Year's Day at our sister-property across the footbridge.
"We remain committed to elevating the Gold Coast's reputation as an entertainment mecca and Mariah Carey will certainly take our offering to the next level and carry on a tremendous year of coups for the property and the region."
Mariah Carey exploded onto the music charts in 1990 with her self-titled debut album boasting an extraordinary four #1 singles, followed by the 1993 release of her most commercially successful album, "Music Box," selling an astounding 30 million copies.
Renowned for her five-octave vocal range, Mariah Carey became the second artist in history and the first female performer to have a song debut at #1 with smash-hit single "Fantasy." Her collaboration with Boyz II Men, "One Sweet Day," was dubbed "90's Song Of The Decade" and remains the longest-running #1 song in US chart history with a record 16 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100. She also surpassed the long-standing record for most #1 singles by a solo artist, held by Elvis Presley, with her 18th Billboard #1 hit, "Touch My Body."
Mariah's long list of accolades includes five Grammy Awards, 17 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards, an Academy Award for "Best Original Song" and 31 Billboard Music Awards, including honours for Billboard's "Artist of the Decade," the World Music Award for "World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium" and BMI's "Icon Award" just to name a few.
Today, the "songbird supreme" continues to define the modern pop performance, recently releasing the lead single from her forthcoming album, "Triumphant."
