Using the Right Blend of Color
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 31-Jan-2007, 9:59AM EST
If you are the whiter shade of mixed race you easily pass as white. Indeed this cloaking mechanism has been used to subvert those with big race agendas.

However if you are able to get underneath the race radar, then you can have some fun.

There are those who attempt this and fail miserably either because they are so obviously black, like Tiger Woods, or as in Big Brother UK's Jade Goody's case, because it is used to scramble credibility.

There is a sad analysis around mixed-race people that perceives them either as lost or confused. However many have shown a great ability to adapt to their conditions and use their status as an advantage.

Mariah Carey has used her mixed-race status to advance her career. Carey says a music critic referred to her as "another white girl trying to sing black".

Carey, was infuriated. "I'm not a white girl trying to sing black," the singer said in an interview soon after.

"My father is black and Venezuelan, my mother is Irish. That makes me a combination of all those things. I am a human being, a person. What I am not is a white girl trying to sing black."

"Some people look at me and they see my light skin and my hair," she says running a slender, neatly manicured hand through her long, semi-curly, honey-coloured tresses for emphasis.

"I can't help the way I look, because it's me. I don't try to look a certain way or sing a certain way. I'm just trying to be me. And if people enjoy my music, then they shouldn't care what I am, so it shouldn't be an issue."

Mariah has been able to position herself as the blue-eyed soul queen and also a one-drop black soul sister; both at the same time. This meant that her records could sit comfortably across all racial lines.

After this her career took a slide and was revived by simply becoming more black. All her videos have her surrounded by examples of black, street masculinity.

In this sense Mariah is no better than Jade who uses her mixed-race card to defend herself against accusations of racism.

Mariah Carey Goes Bare for Playboy Magazine
Posted by Adi on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2007, 10:58PM EST
Tonight's Extra TV had a short segment about Mariah's Playboy magazine cover. You can

Busting out in a skimpy bathing suit and lounging in pink lingerie, "Extra" was first with Mariah Carey as she sexed it up for Playboy magazine.

While Mariah doesn't bare all in the issue, she did bare her soul to the magazine's Jason Buhrmester, including why she's not into one night stands.

"She kind of jokes that she's very, very prudish," Buhrmester revealed.

In the 20-question interview, Mariah opens up about her emotional breakdown after the failure of "Glitter."

"No one ever pointed out that it came out around Sept. 11, 2001," Carey said.

Mariah also revealed the hurtful comment that set her off: "Howard Stern had called her fat that morning and three seconds later she was before her fans, and she just kind of spouted off about it," Buhrmester told "Extra."

On The Cover: Mariah on Movieline 2001
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2007, 3:15PM EST
Mariah Journal's magazines section, On The Cover, has just been updated to include scans from the August 2001 issue of Movieline. Thanks to Amanda for sending us the scans! Below are excerpts from the cover story.

Cash & Carey, Mariah Takes It To The Big Screen

"I think you must be the wealthiest star I've ever met. I hear your new record deal could earn you $100 million in a couple of years."
"Prince called me up the other night and said, 'You think you got a good deal, right?' And then he starts to say how they sell the record for $18.99 and most artists make less than a dollar on each CD. So he says, 'C'mon, do the math with me.' I said, 'Prince, I failed math before Purple Rain came out.' ... I said, well, this is such a great company. And he says, 'That's like the old slave mentality, saying my new master is better than my old master.' Talk about taking the wind out of my sails..."

"How bad a self-image does the most successful woman in music have?"
"Better than it used to be. When I first started recording, someone told me that I should never be photographed from this one particular side because it made me look ugly. I believed that totally and I would always make sure that the photographer was on the other side of me, and that in my shows I was mostly showing one side. I mean, I was 18 years old and they're telling me this crap. They were successful and older and of course I believed them. And it's only since I started studying acting that I got over it. When we first started shooting Glitter, I was convinced that the director of photography was shooting me on my 'bad' side on purpose. When I talked to him, he thought I was out of my mind. I guess nobody sees this 'bad' side but me. So you know what? I've given it up. People will have to accept me with both my 'good' side and my 'bad' side."

"I get the feeling that you're a control freak anyway."
"A little," she says. "But I can give that control up if the people around me are doing their jobs well."

"Don't you wish you had a cool name like J. Lo?"
Carey laughs. "Next question." READ MORE -->

Mariah Carey's Stalker?
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 29-Jan-2007, 7:45PM EST
Some of you may remember Samantha Cole. Some of you may not remember her in relation to Mariah Carey. Cole was more than just the infamous, very underage girlfriend (at 16) to Peter Cook, Christie Brinkley's ex-husband. She was also said to be Mariah Carey's stalker in the late '90s.

Find out how Cole's interaction with Walter Afanasieff, Patricia Carey, and Tommy Mottola gave her the reputation in our writer Robin's latest Have You Heard? blog entitled, Zero Degree of Separation, Stalking in the First.

Mariah Bares Some—Not All—for Playboy
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 29-Jan-2007, 3:55PM EST
Mariah Carey has emancipated herself from most—but not all—of her clothing as the covergirl for Playboy's March issue.

Leaked photos from the shoot made their way onto the Internet last week, showing a shapely (and undoubtedly airbrushed) Carey strutting her stuff in a skimpy flesh-colored bathing suit.

Rumors that the singer would be making an appearance in Playboy had been floating around for several weeks. On Friday, a Playboy spokesperson confirmed to E! News that Carey would indeed be featured on the cover of the magazine, which hits newsstands on Feb. 9.

Carey's spread will accompany a feature on the "Sexiest Comeback," for which she provided the answers to 20 "revealing" questions.

The "We Belong Together" singer's decision to pose for the magazine comes on the heels of her legal battle to block adult-film actor Mary Carey from trademarking her name for video and audio recordings.

In court documents filed last month, the singing Carey expressed concern that her fans might confuse her with the Carey featured in oeuvres such as Lesbian Big Boob Bangeroo 2—a contention laughed off by the porn star, "It seems humorous that a musician as popular as Mariah feels her millions of fans might purchase a Mary Carey adult DVD instead of a copy of The Emancipation of Mimi because they are confused by the name," the other Carey told avn.com last month.

However, with her foray into not-quite-nude modeling, it's possible that the Grammy-winning Carey could be upping the odds of being mistaken for her porn star nemesis. (A clever legal strategy, perhaps?)

Aside from taking a turn in Playboy, Carey is up for two awards at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards next month: Best R&B Song and Best R&B Female Vocal Performance for "Don't Forget About Us."

Carey is also rumored to be making a special guest appearance on American Idol at some point this season, though nothing has been confirmed by the talent competition.

In other E! news, Mariah is currently the 93rd Most Visited Celebrity on E! Online. Full list here.

'Bachelorette' to Mariah: "Embrace Singlehood"
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 28-Jan-2007, 9:59AM EST
Some people are simply famous for being single. There's Jack Nicholson, George Clooney, Matthew McConaughey ... and, of course, Jen Schefft. She famously received a 3-carat Harry Winston ring from Andrew Firestone on "The Bachelor." In an interview with FLUFF as published by the Chicago Sun-Times, Schefft gives some advice to celebrity singles. Here's what she had to say about Mariah.

Mariah Carey
FLUFF: She's had dalliances with Eminem and Derek Jeter, but this diva can't seem to find a strong enough man. Should she just embrace her fabulous singlehood?

SCHEFFT: "Mariah has survived a lot and knows she can take care of herself. I hope she's embracing her singlehood. If a man isn't strong enough to be with her, it's his loss."

Tennessee Update: Bill Sage - Replacement or Addition?
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 26-Jan-2007, 6:58PM EST
IMDB has updated its listing for Tennessee, now showing the movie status to "filming" and removing James D'Arcy from the cast list and replacing him with actor Bill Sage [pictured on right].

Most of the recent press-released information about the filming status of the movie had James D'Arcy on the cast/crew list, but not on this movie's producers' Lee Daniels and Simone Sheffield's official sites. Could this Bill Sage guy be D'Arcy's replacement? Or an addition to the cast?

Eventually, we'll find out.

Harmony Piano Gets Final Signatures
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 26-Jan-2007, 5:58PM EST
On Feb. 1, hundreds of Los Angeles-area public school students will watch as eight-time GRAMMY® winner Natalie Cole and breakout singer-songwriter Josh Kelley become the final two signatures on the Hilton Harmony Piano.

The six-foot grand piano boasts more than 110 celebrity autographs, each one representing a $1,000 donation from Hilton to the music education programs of the GRAMMY Foundation®. The year-long tour earned more than $100,000 for the Foundation, touching the lives of hundreds of local school children along the way.

Just prior to last year's 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards, Hilton Hotels and The Recording Academy® launched the Harmony Tour program, bringing the issue of music education to the attention of GRAMMY performers, nominees and presenters. For each artist that signed the piano, Hilton pledged to donate $1,000 to the GRAMMY Foundation. The Harmony Tour piano debuted backstage at the 48th GRAMMY Awards in February 2006, held at the STAPLES Center, collecting autographs from musicians and celebrities who appeared on the show.

Some of the more than 110 artists who have lent their names to support the Hilton Harmony Tour cause include: Tony Bennett, Mary J. Blige, James Blunt, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow, Ellen DeGeneres, the Dixie Chicks, Herbie Hancock, Tom Hanks, Terrance Howard, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Coldplay's Chris Martin, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Keith Urban, Kanye West, and Stevie Wonder.

"Vision of Love" #70 Most Romantic Love Song
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 26-Jan-2007, 11:09AM EST
Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" makes New York Daily News' The 100 Most Romantic Love Songs Of All Time list at #70.

The 100 Most Romantic Love Songs Of All Time
Some may find them smug. Or sappy. Or at the very least overplayed. But the songs have probably made more lovers misty than any music in memory.

So how did we go about compiling this list of hand-holding odes? Eligible songs had to have endured at least a decade in the public consciousness, if not two or three. More, they had to have been popular enough to have ranked among the Top 20 songs in whatever year they were released.

One more note: These aren't necessarily the sexist songs of all time. If they had been, you would have seen cuts by James Brown and Prince near the top. Neither are they the edgiest. Or those that stoke the most pained yearning. Instead, they're classic serenades to a love achieved, songs meant to make you swoon.

"My Girl" (The Temptations), "I'll Be There" (The Jackson 5), "Wonderful Tonight" (Eric Clapton), "I Just Called to Say I Love You" (Stevie Wonder), and "You Are So Beautiful" (Billy Preston/Joe Cocker) are the top 5 romantic love songs, respectively. Click here to view the complete run-down.

Dupri In Talks To Join Island
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 25-Jan-2007, 9:44AM EST
Super-producer Jermaine Dupri is in negotiations with Universal Music Group about joining its Island Def Jam label, according to several music industry executives.

These executives said that the talks between Island and Dupri are centered on his possible role at the label, but specific details of his duties have yet to be determined.

A deal with Island would reunite Chairman L.A. Reid with Dupri, who is seen as a double threat - functioning both as a producer and as a special guest rapper on albums from such heavyweights as Jay-Z. Dupri brought his So So Def Records to Arista when Reid was CEO of that label.

As a producer, Dupri helped produce Usher's "Confessions" album, which sold 7.9 million copies and was the top-selling album of 2004. He also produced Mariah Carey's comeback album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," which ranked as 2005's best-selling album with 4.9 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In January 2005, Dupri joined EMI's Virgin Records label as the head of its urban music division. But he resigned in October, just 21 months into his tenure.

Representatives for Dupri declined comment for this story, and Island Def Jam could not be reached.

NM Governor Announces Tennessee Shooting
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 23-Jan-2007, 9:45AM EST
SANTA FE (January 22) - Governor Bill Richardson today announced that the feature film Tennessee will shoot in New Mexico.

Tennessee, starring James D'Arcy and Ethan Peck, will be shot in and around Albuquerque from January 22 through February 13, 2007. The production expects to hire over 50 local New Mexico crew members.

Aaron Woodley is directing with Lee Daniels producing.

"New Mexico is recognized in the industry as a legitimate top-caliber production location, a very attractive alternative to productions that might otherwise go to Canada or overseas to shoot," Governor Richardson said. "They recognize the level of local talent that exists here, our ultimate well-spring for this industry in the long term."

"Filming in New Mexico grants all the same benefits to us as L.A. or New York. There are fresh and raw talents to be tapped into for cast and crew, as well as high end veterans of productions past. With such a versatile series of locations and a sky that just keeps on putting out sunshine, New Mexico is the current future of film production," said production manager, Mark G. Mathis.

Tennessee follows the path of two brothers who must return to their hometown in East Tennessee from Albuquerque to look for their estranged, abusive father when one of them is diagnosed with leukemia and desperately needs a life-saving bone marrow transplant.

Since Richardson took office, over 60 feature films and television series have shot in the state, adding over $900 million dollars to New Mexico's economy.

The New Mexico Film Commission site has just updated its In Production section and lists Tennessee with the following information:

Title: Tennessee
Date: 01-23-2007
Information: Tennessee stars Ethan Peck and James D'Arcy. The shoot days are January 22-through February 21.

(505) 244-1904 Production Office
(505) 244 1905 Fax

Also, the status of the movie at Lee Daniels' official site has changed. It now says the film is in production. And at executive producer Simone Sheffield's official site, Canyon Entertainment, Tennessee is now listed on her production section as: "Tennessee" - Production 2007 - Executive Producer - Cast Mariah Carey, Ethan Peck. For a while in her site, it's been listed as Pre-Production.

Daring Carey
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 23-Jan-2007, 3:01AM EST
We all know curvy Mariah Carey loves to parade her bod. And thanks to a saucy Christmas present, she has an excuse to show off even more.

The pop diva, 36, is the owner of a pair of sparkly nipple tassels and loves to flaunt them. A pal tells us: "She feels kind of kinky owning them but a lucky few have been given a private view."

The men in question were not complaining.

Note: According to a very reliable source, the nipple tassels were indeed given to Mariah as a Christmas present.

American Idol: Weekly Musical Themes
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 22-Jan-2007, 6:29PM EST
We've heard the rumors about Mariah Carey and Sir Paul McCartney showing up on "Idol" this year. According to speculation on the "Idol" boards, Bruce Springsteen allegedly plays the role of "Jewel" at the New York auditions this year. We heard Simon mention that week seven would be ABBA week (finally). And some folks over on the "Idol" boards are hoping to see a Christian-themed week (no, please, no).

I am a little frightened by these prospects. First of all, I'm hoping the Mariah week will be a week that encompasses all '90s songs, not just Mariah's catalogue. I really don't want to see poor Sanjaya Malakar have to squeak out "Dreamlover." We're always saying, Randy Jackson and I, that if you're not Mariah Carey, you should avoid singing Mariah Carey songs. I would vote to ban Mariah songs altogether, but realistically I know that will never happen. We are destined to experience "Hero" by at least one wretched contestant each year. It's in the "Idol" code. In addition, it might literally kill my poor STiVo if anyone sings "Wonderful Christmas Time" during Paul McCartney week.

Ask Billboard: "Did Pop Pop?"
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 22-Jan-2007, 6:07PM EST
I'm addicted to your column and I need a fix.

I have a question regarding Christina Aguilera's latest effort "Back to Basics." I just can't figure out why such an excellent album isn't doing as well as it could on the charts.

Could you tell me how it has sold compared to the chanteuse's other efforts? Is there any possibility for this album to bounce back into the top 20 of The Billboard 200?

I also noticed that a lot of the "pop" albums released in 2006 (I'm thinking Jessica Simpson, Gwen Stefani, Christina) didn't achieve expectations. Is pop's popularity fading? Could Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey or even Celine Dion bring back pop music?

Can't wait for your answer.

Jordan B.

Keith Caulfield of Ask Billboard:

Well, Christina Aguilera's album "Back To Basics" is doing pretty darn good.

It has sold 1.3 million copies, really quite great for a double album.

Sure, it's not in the top 10 anymore (it was No. 45 last week), but her last single, "Hurt," faltered at No. 19 on The Billboard Hot 100. If, say, "Hurt" had been a top 10 hit, then perhaps "Basics" would still be riding high on the charts.

It's true that Simpson's album tanked. It's too early to tell about Stefani's "The Sweet Escape." In six weeks it has sold 737,000. Considering the highly odd choice of its first single ("Wind It Up"), that's pretty good. Now she is gaining traction with its second single, the title track (which features Akon).

Who knows what Whitney Houston's album will sound like, when and if it surfaces. It's safe to say that with all the good will that Mariah Carey has built up, her next album could sell great. If she's got another "We Belong Together" hidden away, who knows what she could sell.

Celine Dion is fairly irrelevant when it comes to top 40 radio airplay right now. She hasn't had a top 10 hit on the Hot 100 since 2000, so I wouldn't wager a bet on if Dion will help usher in a renaissance for pop music.

You should look to younger, developing artists for signs that pop is coming back. Everyone from Katharine McPhee, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu will be releasing albums soon and all could do well.

I got to be there when we were creating it from the beginning. It was cool to hear it go from a basic track to a full-blown song. It reminds me of one of Mariah Carey's ... Young Actress Benoist Joins Tennessee Cast
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 21-Jan-2007, 1:29PM EST
Melissa Benoist, the Post's Ovation Award winner for best younger actor of 2006, has landed a major role in the film "Tennessee," starring James D'Arcy and Mariah Carey. It's the story of two brothers on a road trip in search of their estranged father.

Benoist plays the teen love of D'Arcy's character. She begins filming Valentine's Day in New Mexico, then in Tennessee. Her agent, Patty Kingsbaker, said she's trying to work it out so Benoist might still be able to star as scheduled in the Town Hall Arts Center's "Footloose," opening Feb. 23.

Striking gold at #6, Mariah Carey sold 160 Million albums worldwide. She has a reputation for living like a diva. All we have to say is, she's earned it!

Kurt Badenhausen, Associate Editor, Forbes: "We estimate Mariah's net worth to be $225 Million. Forbes really took notice of Mariah Carey in 2002 and it wasn't because of an album. She got paid $28 Million from Virgin so they could break her $80 Million contract they had with her."

Wait! Hold on a sec. They paid her $28 Million not to record on the label? Well, she did drop off the radar for a while after she made Glitter. Ah, I bet those suits at Virgin were kicking themselves when Mimi staged the comeback of a lifetime.

Forbes: "The Emancipation of Mimi has been a huge hit for Mariah Carey. It was the best-selling album of 2005. It sold 10 Million records worldwide."

The album plus the tour added $25 Million to her bank account. She's also a sharp businesswoman with a jewelry line at Claire's. And her own vineyard. And she pulls in several million more from endorsements like the Pepsi commercial. So what's she doing with all the money? I thought you'd never ask.

Samantha Harris, E! News: "Mariah loves living in a lap of luxury and she really, truly knows no bounds. She may rent a private villa or suite beachside and then at the same time, rent a yacht anchored right off the coast and be able to slip away whenever she wants."

Mariah charters the Martha Anne for a $115,000 a week - five state rooms and a 16-person jacuzzi on the sundeck. Is that where she gets her tan? Nope! That's painted on and it's made from 24-carat gold dust. Mariah always glitters even on tour. Thanks to color specialist, Jenny Phillips.

Jenny Phillips, Portofino Sun Center & Spa: "We mix in something so that she would illuminate. She was just this bronze goddess that was on the stage and everyone was like, 'Wow! She looks amazing'."

She might have a black belt in spending but she also has a heart of gold. Mariah is known for her charity work with the Fresh Air Fund and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Mariah Carey: "It's not that difficult to take a few minutes out of your day and try to help, you know, a sick child. You know, boost their morale in some way so this organization is just priceless."

When Mariah says something is priceless, that's the last word.

From Dishwashing to Donuts, Stars Punched Clocks 'Before They Were Famous'
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 19-Jan-2007, 2:00AM EST
Brad Pitt wasn't born the sexiest man alive, Madonna wasn't always a Material Girl and there was a time when the glitterati at the Golden Globes weren't designer-dressed.

The majority of Tinseltown only reached Hollywood's Walk of Fame through blood, sweat, tears and err ... odd jobs to pay the bills while pursuing their passion.

"Everybody starts somewhere," said New York City career counselor Maria Beckett. "I'm sure most celebrities are grateful for their early experiences in the workforce."

Way back in the "virgin" days of her career, Madonna was a counter chick at Dunkin' Donuts.

Sharon Stone wasn't always a superstar, either. Super-sizing was more like it: Sharon kicked off her working life at McDonald's.

Danny DeVito worked as a hairdresser in his sister's salon as a way to make money and meet girls.

Before radio, Rush Limbaugh shined shoes.

Mariah Carey saw no "Visions of Love" in her first job sweeping the floors of a Manhattan hairdresser - she quit after one day. "It was the pits," she told Cosmopolitan magazine. "The manager wanted every female working there to have a cute, phony name, like 'Foxy' or 'Stormy.' He decided I would be 'Echo.'" Mariah told him she had to make a phone call, and that became the only echo in the building: She never went back.

Many of today's household names drove to stardom, literally. Walt Disney's humble beginnings involved driving an ambulance in World War I in France. After high school, Elvis Presley drove trucks and dreamed not of electrifying audiences, but of becoming an electrician.

Others went for the cold sell. Ellen DeGeneres not only shucked oysters but worked as a saleswoman for clothing retail chain Merry Go Round; Ralph Lauren sold gloves; Jerry Seinfeld sold lightbulbs over the phone and just months before breaking the barriers of Nashville, Garth Brooks was a local boot seller.

The usually fast-talking Robin Williams kept his mouth shut as he performed street mime in the 1970s, while "The Producers" star Nathan Lane was a singing telegram delivery boy.

A far cry from the arm of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt handed out flyers while standing outside El Pollo Loco Restaurant in Los Angeles in a not-so-sexy chicken suit. He also escorted strippers through the Hollywood Hills before scoring his big break.

And while Oscar-winning actor/director Warren Beatty is famously rumored to be the inspiration for Carly Simon's song "You're So Vain," his beginnings as a professional rat-catcher are far out of line with the airs of Hollywood Boulevard.

So what tips do the maestros of fame and fortune have to offer aspiring megastars?

"You have to be willing to sacrifice in the short term in order to reap long-term benefits," said B. Grant Yarber, president and CEO of Capital Bank Corp. "The folks who are truly successful are those who have been willing to take jobs that aren't in glamorous places. They make a good show of it and then get offered those plum opportunities."

So get ready, Tinseltown, the Walk of Fame is about to get a whole lot longer. There is hope for us all.

--Randy Jackson called in to KIIS 102.7 FM in Los Angeles, California Tuesday at around 8:30am to talk about the return of American Idol, now in its 6th season, on FOX. During the interview, DJ Ryan Seacrest asked if Mariah would be guesting on the show to which Jackson vaguely answered, "I don't know. People have to stay tuned."

Also in the interview, Jackson revealed that late this year, he will come out with his very own album that will feature guest artists, describing it as a "Quincy Jones-kind-of-album." No further details were mentioned about the album but close-friend Mariah would surely be a possible guest artist.

--David T. Farr of Sturgis Journal: "Nobody says much about this until one of them fails miserably. Case in point: Mariah Carey and the "Glitter" fiasco. I'm one of the five people who actually saw that movie, but I didn't think she was as horrible as critics said. Her biggest problem was she didn't seem believable as an actress. She lacked credibility, but she showed potential."

--Starting this Saturday, January 20th and every Saturday thereafter, the Belgian newspaper, "Het Laatste Nieuws" will release with their newspaper a CD from what they call "Diva CD collection" featuring "15 Femmes Fatales" at a special price. Mariah's CD, Greatest Hits will come with the February 3rd edition of the newspaper.

In other Belgian news, "Get Your Number" continues to do well in the country. Last year, the song stayed for 23 weeks in the official Sales chart and 25 weeks in the official Airplay chart and to this day, still one of the most requested songs in clubs. "Get Your Number" is currently at #34 on Jamba's Best-selling Ringtones chart. Jamba is the largest ringtones seller in Belgium.

The Portuguese newspaper Expresso features a short Mariah mention in their magazine Unica (January 13 issue).
The article tells about how Mariah likes to protect her voice by using vapor. Precisely, the magazine describes how she sleeps in a "steam bedroom" to keep her vocal chords humidified. They also quote Mariah saying "It’s not intentional — if you film my body a certain way, it’s gonna look like a certain way" regarding her "looking sexy" on television.

Another Portuguese magazine, TV Mais (January 17 issue), includes a small Mariah mention on their report about Mr. Blackwell's list of worst dressed celebrities. Click here to see the scan.

A Little Interview With Jasmine Dotiwala
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 18-Jan-2007, 10:38AM EST
Eric of MCArchives had the pleasure of asking Jasmine Dotiwala a few questions. As you all know, Jasmine is one of Mariah's closest friends and often writes for the British newspaper The Voice about the time they spent together. Jasmine first met Mariah when Mariah was a guest on her MTV show in Capri.

Mariah: "Initially, I was expecting the typical TV interview: you know, someone who hasn't done their research and who cane to the table full of preconceptions about me - everybody has preconceptions about me - but she was cool. I had to pretend to be mad at her, and push her in the pool. So I did, but then I jumped in after her because I just love swimming so much. We were both fully clothed, and as she didn't have anything to change into afterwards, I gave her a pair of my knickers. That was a real bonding moment. Ever since then, we've stayed in touch, and whenever I'm in London we hook up."

Jasmine told Independent on Sunday, "It's not so strange having a celebrity friend when you get used to it. The public persona doesn't match the private one. When you get to know Mariah, you realise that she is totally down-to-earth. Don't laugh, I'm not joking..."

Does Mariah know about the main websites dedicated to her (sites like MCArchives, Mariah Daily, Mariah Journal, Heroes of Mariah and Mariah Connection)?
MC absolutely knows about all these sites, in fact often your sites are quicker at telling the fans and world about MC's world than the official label sites! We often look at them and they make us laugh, cry and smile!

Which website is your favourite?
I'm not sure which my favourite is yet, but I will keep a look out. I'm impressed with the variety of stories on yours though and like the fact that everything's easy to read and find and it feels like a true "news site".

This Week In Entertainment History
Posted by Adi on Wednesday, 17-Jan-2007, 3:11PM EST
One of Entertainment highlights during the week of Jan. 21-27:

2002: Virgin Records and Mariah Carey ended their record deal. Virgin paid Carey $28 million to break the contract, on top of the $21 million the singer got for signing with Virgin.

Related Story:
2007: What Goes Around Comes Around (Jan. 12): EMI Group Plc, the U.K. record company that signed the Beatles, ousted its two top music executives and forecast lower revenue after disappointing holiday sales.

Alain Levy will leave after five years as chief executive officer of the recorded music division. David Munns, the unit's vice chairman, will also step down.

Under Levy's leadership, his biggest splash was to drop Mariah Carey from her multi-million dollar contract in January 2002.

Bling King Calls Stars For Trial
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 17-Jan-2007, 4:55AM EST
Jeweler to the stars Jacob Arabov is calling on his celebrity clients to testify as defense witnesses at his upcoming federal money-laundering trial.

Rappers Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jay-Z, songstress Mariah Carey and Los Angeles-bound soccer great David Beckham top the list of witnesses drawn from Jacob & Co.'s clientele, a source close to the case told The Post's Kati Cornell.

Recent court records show lawyers for "Jacob the Jeweler," who has a store on East 57th Street, detailed their strategy and a list of megastars they intend to call in a sealed submission to a U.S. judge in Detroit.

The bling-meister is accused of accepting cash for jewelry from the members of the Black Mafia Family (BMF) - a Detroit-based drug ring that moved millions of dollars in narcotics - and then failing to file the proper tax forms in a scheme to hide the illegal source of the money.

Defense lawyer Benjamin Brafman refused to comment on specific witnesses, but said Arabov's celebrity clients would testify about his good character and how "they themselves made substantial purchases in cash from Mr. Arabov and all the money was handled properly."

Nice Story About Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 16-Jan-2007, 7:33PM EST
Two Scoops Ahead has this very nice story about Mariah to share:

"I was at a photography convention this past Sunday in San Antonio, TX, and this guy, with only one full-working hand, came in and started playing piano in the hotel lobby. It was completely amazing! His left hand was basically a stump with no fingers.

After a couple of songs he began to tell us about himself (my group of photographer friends and I were all photographing him while he played). One of the stories he told was of a beautiful woman who came up to him while he was playing (he said she was surrounded by 4 big men).

After he finished, he turned to her and she said that she was about to cry. She told him of how amazing she thought it was that he could be disabled like that and play so well. He then asked her if she was a musician (he didn't know who she was), and then when the guys around her started to laugh, she said, 'Quiet!' and explained that she was a musician. He asked her what her instrument was, and she, of course, said her voice. Then, she introduced herself as Mariah Carey and asked him to play another song. He said that when he finished she was crying and said that she would come see him again the next day."

Thanks to Gilles' research, we now know that the man who played the piano for Mariah is named Frank Munoz. Here are excerpts from an article about him at MySA:

If he had been born with two perfectly normal hands, Frank Muñoz believes he would not have become the piano player he is today. His left hand did not form properly. The arm is shorter than his right and his hand looks like a smooth triangle - no fingers but with two appendages on each corner.

Muñoz said his parents would not have considered buying him a piano and enrolling him in lessons if he had not been embarrassed by his left arm. The point of the piano was to make him less self-conscious. He took lessons from the nuns that taught at his Catholic school - La Salle - which since has been closed. Muñoz's first lesson was 50 years ago.

Now, at 56, Muñoz has returned to settle in San Antonio after traveling around the country as a teacher and to Spain as a student. He has played piano for the king of Spain and singer Mariah Carey, although he did not know who she was at the time.

Two years ago, he played for Spain's King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia. Muñoz was playing the piano in the cavernous lobby of the Westin Palace Hotel in downtown Madrid when word spread of the royal couple's arrival. The management asked if he could entertain them.

He played for Carey when she was staying at the same hotel. She had a conversation with him about his playing technique, he said.

Two Mariah Songs Make Vibe's 50 Greatest Duets
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 15-Jan-2007, 10:18PM EST
Two Mariah songs have made it to Vibe's The 50 Greatest Duets Of All Time.

DAYDREAM (Columbia, 1995)

The Players: Mariah Carey and Ol' Dirty Bastard

The Backstory: It wasn't until beauty Mariah Carey found the lyrical beast that her career reached ridiculous heights. "Fantasy" shipped Mariah to the 'hood. It also brought ODB into suburban girls' bedrooms.

Key Moment: The pinnacle comes when Mr. Brooklyn Zoo proclaims, "Me and Mariah / Go back like babies with pacifiers."

MTV UNPLUGGED EP (Columbia, 1992)

The Players: Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz

The Backstory: A number one hit on the pop single chart for the Jackson 5 in 1970, it was a vocal showcase for a then 12-year-old Michael. Carey ambitiously updated the song, sharing duties with backup singer Lorenz.

Key Moment: Mariah's got five octaves, but when Lorenz dives into his verse with exultant "Oh"s and the backing choir follows his lead, it sets the song in motion.

News From Turkey
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 15-Jan-2007, 6:27PM EST
Mariah is featured twice in the January 2007 issue of the Turkish music magazine, Dream.

Hottest Tours of 2006, pages 36 & 37
Mariah Carey. One can't help but expect the adventures of a Looney Tunes character when they hear the name of the tour, The Adventures of Mimi.

Actually, since Mariah changes costumes very often, it is possible to divide the concert into chapters like, "mimi in a night club" or "mimi by the poolside." 1.5 years after the release of The Emancipation of Mimi, the diva went on tour despite announcing before that she won't be touring again because of exhaustion and long distances. But Mariah couldn't break the hearts of her fans and went back on road.

Mariah, or with her nickname Mimi, ended her tour in Japan in October which started in Tunis in June. Together with her dancers, she presented different shows in each date and appealed both to ears and the eyes. Through the long and glamorous concerts, her friends never left her alone, as Sean Paul and Busta Rhymes appeared in almost every concert, Jay Z and Boyz II Men in a few.

Reviews of the tour were mainly positive. Critics agreed that Mariah's voice, which was the main element of the concerts, was at its peak and that it gave goosebumps to everyone. Though there were some dissapointing points like Mariah constantly giving breaks to change her costumes or leaving the show early when no one got enough of her.

Another dissapointment was the final concert, which had to be cancelled due to low ticket sales and Mariah's unreasonable demands. The tour started off great but ended in an unpleasant way but it surely was a victory on Mariah's behalf.

Mariah's Porn Persona Carey, page 77
Mariah Carey has a problem, its name is Mary Carey. Being one of the most succesful vocalists of the music scene, Mariah is afraid that she is gonna be confused with the porn star who has a similar name. Though Mariah is worried that this might hurt her career, Mary is not willing to give up her name, "I'm ready to battle Mariah over this. It's kind of funny because I'm a porn star and I've been being myself for a long time. I think she's being silly." If Mariah's CV consists of 11 studio albums and tens of hits, Mary's past is full of 18+ works. Do you see why Mariah is trying to get away from this connection?"

Randy Jackson Mentions Mariah in 'Idol' Conference Call
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 15-Jan-2007, 6:22PM EST
The other day, Randy Jackson did a conference call with journalists around the country and it was the first promotional event for the new season of American Idol. Jackson said he has spoken with Mariah about the possibility of her guesting on the show. Below are excerpts from the conference call.

Chris: Randy, it seems like on CBS Rock Star kind of clicked with some viewers because the song selection was a little more modern. Are there songs that you're just sick to death of from American Idol by now?
Randy: Yes. There are a lot of songs that we're sick to death of during the auditions. We mentioned "At Last" by Etta James, which is an amazing song, but people just butcher it; "Fallin" by Alicia Keyes, people just butcher that. There are tons of songs that people butcher and I have heard no one yet to ever sing a Mariah Carey song and do it justice.

Michael: You mentioned that sometimes you'll hear 200 auditions a day. How can you, as a judge, give equal time and your attention to the 200th person. Aren't you just dying by then?
Randy: Fortunately for us one of the things that makes this show really, really cool is that myself, Simon, and Paula are really 25-year-plus music industry veterans. We've done every facet of it. There's nothing we don't know about the music business. So me having been A&R guy for 15 years and also being a musician myself and being on a countless number of auditions when I was growing up, you're used to doing it. I put bands together. I just had Mariah out on tour with a huge band. I mean it's what I do, so I kind of know how to pace myself by this point. Do you know what I mean?

Eric: I was reading my Entertainment Weekly also and I saw that you were quoted as saying you're going to call up Mariah Carey and ask her to be a guest judge, not a guest judge, but to mentor the kids and sing on the show. Is that going to happen?
Randy: I don't know. I mean I've been thinking about it. We've tossed it around a bit. I think she'd be great because I think still, for me, she and Whitney and Celine are those three big great divas, I mean some of the better singers of our time that we've ever known.

Eric: Have you talked with Mariah about it?
Randy: I mentioned it to her. We'll see. I don't know. We'll see. You've got to stay tuned on that one.

Mary: I'm always interested to see what the contestants learn from the celebrities, who come in to coach them, and then kind of what they take with them in other performances. What I see a lot of is people like Barry Manilow or whoever will say to them, "You're singing that fine, but there's no emotion behind it." I mean tell me a little bit about that. Do you think that's something that the technically competent singers aren't thinking about or maybe at this stage in their careers they just don't know how to do the emotional part?
Randy: What Barry is basically saying is a song is comprised of a bunch of things. It's the lyric. It's the melody. It's also you being able to tie in emotionally to what that song means. What's the lyric saying? What are you trying to convey to the next listener? Also, the difficulty of the degree of singing in that song; as if you can't sing like Mariah Carey, then you shouldn't be trying to sing Mariah Carey songs.

Syndicated columnist, Liz Smith talks about Mariah in Aspen in this week's edition of "Lips & Ears" at FoxNews.com. Watch a streaming video or download a video file.

"The blizzards of Aspen in Denver seem to be ongoing but they are nothing compared to the blizzard of photos coming out of that mountain these days. I saw one of Mariah Carey. She was wearing skin-tight, cleavage-baring black leather from head to toe plus four-inch high-heeled shoes. Why do we love Mariah Carey so much? I think it's because she never tries to just be the girl-next-door."

"A below-the-knee length is a welcome departure from the super-short minis that Mariah Carey is known for. Opting to let the animal print express her sexy side is a savvy choice."

Mariah Talks About Her Backup Singers
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 14-Jan-2007, 8:23AM EST

Just posted on MariahCarey.com's Virtual Ticket section is a video of Mariah discussing her relationship with her backup singers. Here's what she had to say about them:

On Trey Lorenz: "Trey is a stone winner. He's very, very funny. He makes me laugh. We do have to sing together so sometimes we have to tone down the jokes and we just have to sing the song together like we don't know each other. But the problem is, we've known each other for a really long time so sometimes we're used to make each other laugh."

On Mary Ann and Sherry Tatum: "Mary Ann is really one of my best friends. Sherry and Mary Ann are really singing song incredibly, difficult parts like I don't just do regular backup sections on my songs. They're kind of almost impossible to do so you have to have real singers - they're definitely incredible singers - that's what they do."

"Mary Ann is an amazing singer and she's a perfectionist. I love that about her. And she's fun on stage and she's watching everything that's going on like nothing gets past her so she's like a rock for me when we're on the stage together in terms of stability, friendship. I could turn to her and say, 'Take that line, I'll take this line' and we do that a lot."

Morgan Carey Confirms Mariah's Role in K-Town
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 12-Jan-2007, 6:10PM EST
Music journalist Rashmi Shastri's full interview with Mariah's brother, Morgan Carey, is now up on her site. Morgan briefly mentions Mariah in the interview. Excerpts below.

How did you become involved with the music industry?
"I was trying to help my sister, [Mariah Carey] break through at the beginning and get her into the game. A good friend of mine, Gavin Christopher, cut her first demo and I later hired Ben Marguiles to work with her. They went on to write a number of the hits on her first album together. I actually walked her by the hand up to Seymour Stein's office at Sire with that demo. Back then I knew a lot of industry people from having worked in the clubs so I played her stuff for anybody I knew who would listen; Billy Idol, Nona Hendryx, Tina B, The System, etc. Not long after, Mariah and Tommy [Mottola] got together and it went where it went..."

Tell me about the K-Town project.
"I told YG that Skull would be perfect for a part our movie, K-Town. Mariah [Carey] will be playing a part in it, and I thought it would be a great way to introduce YG Entertainment to the U.S. My plan is to release the soundtrack through YG Entertainment, and have a few tracks from YG artists. It's an action driven drama with cross-cultural dilemmas at its core. I can't really say anymore, you'll just have to see it when it comes out."

What Goes Around Comes Around

EMI Group Plc, the U.K. record company that signed the Beatles, ousted its two top music executives and forecast lower revenue after disappointing holiday sales.

Alain Levy will leave after five years as chief executive officer of the recorded music division. David Munns, the unit's vice chairman, will also step down. Chairman Eric Nicoli will become CEO of EMI, the world's third-largest music company, and take charge of the record unit, EMI said in a statement today.

EMI shares fell to their lowest in almost a year after the company said music revenue may drop as much as 10 percent. EMI, which released albums by Robbie Williams and Keith Urban in the fiscal second half, had none of the 10 best-selling albums in the U.S. last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. EMI's revenue has declined as downloads failed to make up for business lost to piracy.

The revenue drop "is pretty scary," said Anthony de Larrinaga, an analyst at SG Securities in London. "The market was getting wise to the fact that some of the release roster in the second half wasn't performing as well as it would need to."

Alain Levy was brought on board in October 2001 to turn around the company, which has seen many of its multi-million dollar artist releases sink with out a trace. Since joining EMI, Levy has been trawling through the company's sprawling empire to find ways to improve profitability as global music sales decline. Under his leadership, his biggest splash was to drop Mariah Carey from her multi-million dollar contract in January 2002.

New Bone Thugs Album To Feature Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 11-Jan-2007, 7:55PM EST
In late March 2007, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony plan to release a new CD -- "Strength and Loyalty" -- featuring a cast of super producers and heavyweight guest stars.

Though known for their collaborations with late rap legends -- Biggie, Tupac and Eazy-E -- Bone Thugs never released an album with as many star collaborations as the upcoming disc.

Jermaine Dupri produced a song featuring Mariah Carey, which could be an early single, while other tracks feature The Game and Petey Pablo.

Group member Layzie said Kanye West, Will.i.am (of Black Eyed Peas) and reigning R&B champ Akon all contributed tracks.

Randy Jackson Mentions Mariah (Again)
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 11-Jan-2007, 7:13AM EST
Here's what Randy Jackson had to say during a teleconference Monday to plug the sixth season of the hit competition show, American Idol:

On the importance of song selection:
"This is a very emotional competition. You have to try and find a song that takes you through the journey. I haven't heard anyone do a Mariah Carey song justice. If you can't sing like Mariah Carey, you shouldn't be singing a Mariah Carey song. When you choose a song that is too big for you, what you're telling me is that you don't know who you are and you don't know what your strengths are."

Mariah To Guest on American Idol?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 10-Jan-2007, 5:12PM EST
Last year, Prince. This year, Paul McCartney and Mariah Carey?

As "American Idol" starts singing again Tuesday, those connected with the Fox blockbuster acknowledge few limits when it comes to guest stars or ratings or product spinoffs. Or even rampant enthusiasm.

"American Idol," produced by FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, returns with a richer gloss than ever. Last year's finale included a surprise appearance by Prince, among the highest-profile guest stars and far removed from such golden oldie visitors as Rod Stewart.

"Prince blew the doors off. He is one of the quintessential ones of our time," Jackson said. Frot-Coutaz's take: "The fact we can get Prince is a real tribute to the show. ... (now) who knows who we can get?"

McCartney, an iconic figure who's an impressive "get" for any venture, is being courted and is rumored to be part of the new season. Carey may also end up on the guest list.

"Nothing's locked," Frot-Coutaz said of the ex-Beatle. "We've had discussions with him over the years. It's always a matter of making it work."

In Carey's case, record producer-cum-judge Jackson may be the key: He and the singer are friends and have a long professional association. Jackson said they have "tossed it around a bit" but have yet to set her appearance.*

*In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, January 12th issue [see MJ Mariah in Weeklies 01/06/07], Randy Jackson said he may ask Mariah to be a guest on American Idol:

The finalists just might meet a Beatle:
"... [Randy] Jackson, who's always boasting about his connections, says he's finally ready to start calling in some favors: 'I don't cross my Idol and my producer life that much, but I may call Mariah this season and say, 'Yo, come on d, dude. Get in this game.'"

Shedding The Cocoon: Symbolism In The Butterfly Videos
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 10-Jan-2007, 2:45PM EST
When Mariah Carey divorced Tommy Mottola in 1997, she felt free to do a lot of things that she couldn't do when married. Mariah has said she felt stifled in her marriage with Tommy, and her 1997 album Butterfly chronicles a lot of what Mariah was going through at the time. Not coincidentally, the videos from the album seem to be her most symbolic.

In his new Looking In blog entry, Shedding The Cocoon: Symbolism In The Butterfly Videos, Jason shares with us the significance and symbolism behind the Butterfly videos and their connections to Mariah's personal life. Feel free to leave your comments!

2. Camilla Parker-Bowles
3. Lindsay Lohan
4. Christina Aguilera
5. Mariah Carey
6. Paula Abdul

Ask Billboard: "Your Paris is Giving My Carey a Minogue"
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 09-Jan-2007, 5:53PM EST
For January 06, 2007.

You said last week that Mariah Carey is not in the (same) ball park (as) the Beatles. I love both and disagree. Just had to put in my two cents.

However, you said on your list of your favorite 2006 songs (kudos on including Elton John) that you are ready to defend Paris Hilton's album. I'd really like to hear you do so. I absolutely despise it, and I have listened to all of it more than once. No one likes a fun pop record more than me, but I find her singing to have no soul and her voice to have no strength. Why wouldn't I just buy a Kylie Minogue album instead?

I'd love to hear your take on her.

Many thanks,
Rudy Palma

Keith Caulfield of Ask Billboard:

First, if I justify why Paris Hilton's album is good, then you should give me reasons why Mariah Carey is in the same ball park as the Beatles. I'm not saying that you don't have valid reasons - I'm sure you do - but you just didn't say why she should considered on the same level them. As I stated last week, I don't believe her cultural impact is quite the same as the Beatles.

I do think that Carey has achieved extraordinary success and has written and recorded some very memorable songs. Say, "Vision Of Love," "We Belong Together" or "One Sweet Day," for example. Really, I'm not bashing Carey.

It's not a "the Beatles are better than her" sort of thing. Carey is a great singer - one of the best that pop music has seen in the past 20 years. To be honest, there are few acts, if any, that can be held on the same level as the Beatles.

Now, switching gears to Hilton's album. I think that if you were to listen to the album without any knowledge of who the artist is, your impression might be different. I can listen to the album as a pure pop music fan, and admire its qualities. There are some really fun songs on there - like "Nothing In This World," or the "Grease" -sampling "I Want You." Sure, Hilton's voice isn't really all that much to write home about. But it's serviceable - and that's all the songs require. I don't think Hilton set out to create "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band." I believe her only intention was to produce a fun pop album -and that's what she did.

Sometimes a particular song doesn't require a classically great voice.

Even my favorite artist, Madonna, doesn't have a technically amazing voice.

She's no Mariah or Whitney Houston, obviously. But she can still write, produce and record songs that are great - it's not always about how long you can wail, or what glory note you can hit.

Jasmine's Juice
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 09-Jan-2007, 1:42PM EST
"I can't talk about MC's other gifts as they're a bit naughty." by Jasmine Dotiwala

Just before Christmas I flew out of Heathrow to NYC's JFK airport to begin my yearly adventure with my Xmas cousin Mariah Carey.

Once settled in MC's Manhattan apartment, 15 of us (including MC's bestest mates Maryann, Rachel, Trey Lorenz, and brothers Shawn and Mikey), took off in a convoy of black Maybachs to the sound of carols as we made our way to a private airfield where a Christmas-themed jet awaited us.

We toasted the start of our adventure with DP champagne as we headed to Aspen, Colorado. On our decent into Aspen the snow fell wildly and we could see reindeer and wild horses running about beneath us - it looked so cool!

Our first night was spent exploring Mimi's lodge in the mountains where we were staying: A marvellous six-bedroom house.

Many 4am-moments saw us swigging the Pinot in MC's jacuzzi with the night sky twinkling above us as Evil G, MC's brother Shawn, played the best hip-hop sets on his iPod.

MC encouraged us all to slip into our bikinis – with the boys in their trunks - and jump in and out of the house hottub and snow.

Our housekeeper Maggie woke us daily with the aroma of breakfast cooking and boy could she rustle up a fingerlickin' brekky!

On our second night in Aspen MC had a surprise planned. She had 50 kids from a special care home driven from Denver to Aspen where she arrived with Santa on a sleigh pulled by nine real reindeer. The kids had the time of their lives as MC and Santa gave them gifts of cameras and CD players.

The following night our really cute 18-year-old driver Cody told me that Method Man and Redman were performing that very night. Yes. Really. This really rich, white, city had a hip-hop scene! It had to be seen to be believed so I told MC and we excitedly went to Bellyup, where the troublesome duo were in the flesh.

The club show was ultra fun but not a touch on a real gully London street vibe.

Twenty of us spent Xmas day opening gifts, screaming, eating and lazing about in our Xmas T-shirts.

Amongst my gifts were a Gucci candle, Juicy couture socks and bracelet, a Ralph Lauren cashmere scarf, a sexy little black dress, a shower scrubber with 'nuff accessories, a sequin clutch handbag, Elton John fireside aroma rocks, lots of silly board games, and some very pip jewellry.

I gave MC some cute undies (just the type she likes), a solid silver yo-yo (engraved with 'MC you make my world go round, JD') which she showed off doing tricks with, a very sexy slinky dress by London designer Kesh who made it extra low at the front and back with a big bow at the booty and a diamond hanging slinkily down MC's back (which she paraded in), a blinging gold and grey Rolling Stones lips T-shirt from Topshop and the one she really loved - a black hoodie graffiti tagged by London-based graff artist Batlow who blazed the piece up with pink and violet diamonte! Heavy! (I can't talk about her other gifts as they're a little naughty!)

On our last night we attended a party for Aspen Peak magazine, where MC was the guest of honour. She wore the Rolling Stones lips T-shirt and looked ultra fly with her limited edition not-in-the-stores-yet Louis Vuitton boots.

Once MC had worked the red carpet the party could really begin as she held court in the DJ booth with DJ Suss who was flown out from NYC specially. Suss threw down crazy beats but as you can imagine the Aspen crowd weren't familiar with all the ones we were going crazy to. (In fact they requested stuff like Harry Connick Junior. Sheesh.)

Then Seal and his missus supermodel Heidi Klum joined us and we all hung out, danced and chatted for a bit - they were SO sweet.

At midnight we sped off to the Caribou Club before being whisked straight to Rifle (private) airfield at 2am for our flight back to NYC.

MC has given me a lifetime of memories and adventures that I won't believe took place when I look back at 80 years of age!

My holiday adventure didn't end there, eight hours later we jumped on another jet en route to South Africa for Oprah Winfrey's New Year's Eve party.

Readers, can you bear to miss your 'Juice' next week?

Contrary to popular belief, Jasmine Dotiwala is not just a ghetto 'It' Girl.

She is a senior producer/director of MTV News, MTV Cribs, Making of the Video, Tour Diaries etc.

Ask Billboard: "Legend, Star, Diva... MARIAH"
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 09-Jan-2007, 1:16AM EST
For December 29, 2006.

Hi Keith!

I have been a Mariah Carey fan since 1998 when she released the song "My All" from the "Butterfly" album. [I want to] know what you think about Carey's status in music industry. Do you think one day she could become a legend? Or do you think she might be just a lucky star in that she has had a lot of success on charts [and sold a lot of albums]?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Dave Corneau
Montreal, Canada

Keith Caulfield of Ask Billboard:

Hi Dave,

Oh boy, another diva question? It does seem like certain acts, no matter how many albums they sell, or No. 1 singles they have, just aren't considered "legendary." Truly, just because you sell a lot, that doesn't mean you are a legend.

Take for example, acts like Bon Jovi, Journey, Celine Dion or Whitney Houston. All have had many hit singles, sold millions of albums, and yet, most would debate whether all of them have reached "legendary" status. (I'm waiting for frustrated Houston fans to write in, angered that I would even suggest she isn't a legend.) With some artists, say, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson... it's a no brainer. They are legends. Period.

I think the "legend" perception may have to do with the artist's cultural significance. While Carey will likely end up rewriting history books as the artist with the most No. 1 Hot 100 singles (she gets closer to breaking the Beatles' record every year), has she made the same sort of cultural impact as the Beatles? I think even Carey herself might concede that she's not in the same ballpark as the fab four.

And Carey fans, don't send me hate mail. "The Emancipation of Mimi" was my No. 9 favorite album of 2005.

Mariah To Duet With Egyptian Singer Hakim?

In a Tunisian TV show on Hannibal TV last Saturday, Egyptian singer Hakim was asked about a duet with Jennifer Lopez, but he denied and said, "We are working on an eventual duet with Mariah Carey; the one with J-Lo was cancelled."

Hakim has already recorded a duet with James Brown in 2004 which was a success in Arabic countries. The single is called "Leila" and it's a duet where Hakim sings in the Egyptian Arabic accent and James Brown sings in English.

Note: This information has yet to be confirmed or announced by Mariah's management.

--Mike Errico, editor for Blender.com, said Britney Spears should take a cue from Mariah Carey, who fell out of favor in 2001 after making a string of career mistakes.

"People like Mariah have bottomed out and bounced back hotter than ever. So I think anything that's happening now might not necessarily reflect her sales. I think it will come down to the same old things -- does she have a hit, will the radio play it, and will the country be in the mood to listen to it."

Mariah's 'Steamy' Nights
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 08-Jan-2007, 5:58AM EST
In her column, Gossip at MSNBC.com today, Jeanette Walls writes about Mariah's "steamy" nights, quoting from the old Spring Preview 2006 issue of V Magazine. You can read the full V Magazine interview in our magazine section, On The Cover.

Mariah Carey sleeps in a steam room.

The diva says that there's one room that didn't appear on that infamous "Cribs" tour of her apartment, and that's her bedroom, which she has turned into a water-logged chamber to keep her vocal chords humidified.

"Literally I'll have twenty humidifiers around the bed," Carey told V magazine. "Basically it's like sleeping in a steam room. The bed is all terry-cloth, the ceiling is pitched so the water can't fall on my head, and it drips down to my side, and the TV is behind glass."

Carey, who is known for her provocative on-and-off-stage outfits, also discussed her sexy image - and blamed the media.

"I think that a lot of women are just trying to live up to the stereotypes and to the standard that's set on TV and in magazines, which is airbrushed women who weigh 3 pounds," she said. "And it's not fair. It's not easy. But everybody gets really protective of me. They're, like, 'Be less sexy.'" She said that if she overdoes the sexy look "it's not intentional - if you film my body a certain way, it's gonna look like a certain way. But honestly, I've been the same way since I was a little kid. Like, I'm just emulating whatever's on a magazine."

Mariah in Weeklies
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 06-Jan-2007, 6:24PM EST
Below are scans from the January 15, 2007 issues of Us Weekly, Star, In Touch, People and OK! magazines.

In the January 12th issue of Entertainment Weekly with Ryan, Paula, Randy and Simon on the cover, Mariah is mentioned in the article, The finalists just might meet a Beatle:

"... [Randy] Jackson, who's always boasting about his connections, says he's finally ready to start calling in some favors: 'I don't cross my Idol and my producer life that much, but I may call Mariah this season and say, 'Yo, come on d, dude. Get in this game.'"

And a scan from the French magazine, Closer (Issue #81, January 1-7, 2007):

"That's why we love her. Mariah is a true diva, a real superstar like no one else. When being natural is trendy, the bad-tasted queen makes it different. On holiday to sky in Aspen, she's wearing black glasses and shows off some cleavage. Even when it's freezing, she's doing her own show."

Mary is Still Carey
Posted by Adi on Friday, 05-Jan-2007, 11:11PM EST
An internet report published this morning indicated that a judge ruled in favor of Mariah Carey in her attempt to prevent adult star Mary Carey from trademarking the stage moniker she's been using for years. According to Mary's attorney, who is assisting her with the trademark application, the report is not true. There has not been a ruling in the case.

Indeed, Mary hasn't even filed her response to Mariah's objection. Mary has plenty of time to file that response before a Judge would normally rule. So, as of now, there is no ruling saying Mary Carey cannot trademark her stage name and we're told the web report indicating otherwise is being taken down. Although she hasn't filed her formal, official response with the trademark office, you'll recall Mary already shared her thoughts with us on Mariah's attempted intervention into the trademark process.

As for Mariah, besides being busy trying to make sure no one confuses her with a porn star, she's going to reveal a few things to Playboy in March. But, she won't be emancipating any body parts. Ms. Mariah won't be posing nude, but a source tells us she will be on the cover as she's interviewed in the issue and history shows that Playboy cover models are typically scantily clad. So, we'll see if Mariah comes out looking more like Mimi or Mary when it hits new stands in a couple months.

Earlier today, the Austrian public service broadcaster ORF reported that Mariah had won the case against Mary Carey during the last week of December. Click on the link to read the article in German.

Shopping Instead of Skiing
The pop diva loves her curves and likes to show them off in tight and flashy outfits: At a champagne party at the jewelry store "Joan Boyce", la Carey appeared wearing thin leggings and a cotton shirt – and this in cold Aspen! Along with that, she combined a silver-grey hood cardigan and matching astronaut boots! "I rarely ski – I prefer shopping", says Mariah. Fancy boots at best.

page 44, 45

Introduction: Mariah Carey
The diva and her moon boots obsession: Following the "as long as the feet are kept warm" motto, even during her winter holidays she wears belly tops.

Mariah’s Moon Boots Mania

Mariah Carey (37): The pop diva owns about 1,500 pairs of shoes. During winter though, only a very special kind of shoes may keep her little feet warm...

Christmas holiday in a snowy mountain landscape – that’s what the singer likes best. And every year she makes this dream come true celebrating with friends at the skier’s paradise in Aspen, Colorado. And she also has her favorite companion ready during these special times: A pair of Dior moon boots (ca. 415 euro). Every winter she stamps through the snow with yet another type of those. "You don’t have to walk around in a bad style only because it’s cold", says the pop diva, "plus, I love Dior."

Her fashionable appearances in Aspen have become legendary: Only Mariah can walk around the city wearing a low-cut décolleté at -15°C, with or without warming moon boots. In this outfit exactly the diva goes for her favorite winter action: "Sledding! There’s nothing more beautiful than that!" Skiing is not her thing though: "I need more than an hour to get prepared in the morning. After that, most ski lifts are already closed."

But Mariah wouldn’t be Mariah if she hadn’t planned a varied holiday schedule: She told the Aspen Peak magazine recently: "I love getting out of the bathtub and then go rolling around in the snow." She didn’t say if she’s wearing her loving moon boots while doing that though...

She Wears Dior from Head to Toe
Aspen – a glittering winter wonderland. The diva can’t miss that for sure. Her holiday motto: Pure Glamor – especially concerning her outfits. Mariah hits the slope only when she’s wearing a complete Dior look (3800 Euro). She’d just rather go shopping than skiing. Maybe Mariah hasn’t heard that the snow in Aspen is particularly good and only because of that it’s called "Champagne Snow"...

Mariah: Hot Dancer at Oprah's NYE Bash
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 05-Jan-2007, 3:18PM EST
Essence Editorial Director Susan L. Taylor and her husband, Khephra Burns, were in attendance and reported back about the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls's star-studded opening ceremonies.

Black royalty was in attendance: the Mandelas, Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson and Vernon Winfrey, Oprah's father, who had saved her life and taught her the importance of being grateful and giving back, she told a riveted audience in the school's beautiful auditorium during the opening ceremony.

Oprah's family and friends had traveled from throughout the country to be with her. Her best friend, Gayle, was our co-host; Steadman was ever-present, always with a watchful eye and supportive hand on his beloved. Dozens of celebrities came and some brought their families. It was surprising to us that for so many well-known African Americans, this was their very first time on the Continent.

Among the hundred or so of us were Quincy Jones, Andrew Young, Mariah Carey and her superstar manager, Benny Medina, who, along with Mary J. Blige (who was with her husband, Kendu Isaacs) and Lady Cicely, were the hottest dancers and were still shaking it up long after we'd ushered in the new year and the rest of us had collapsed. Along with their wives and children, Chris Rock and Spike Lee came out, as did the loving media marrieds Deborah Roberts and Al Roker and their family. Holly Robinson Pete amazed us all, arriving with her mother, hubby, their four little ones and two nannies. Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, Tyler Perry and producing partner Reuben Cannon, India.Arie, Anna Deavere Smith, Chris Tucker, Star Jones, Kimberly Elise, Suzanne de Passe, BeBe Winans and Patti LaBelle were all there as well along with the most gorgeous and joyful Tina Turner and a host of others. That's the power of the O factor!

After spending days of splendor in Sun City's extravagantly designed Palace Hotel, an evening safari and a New Year's Eve party with more that 35 acts that lasted 'til the wee hours, the caravan headed for the Westcliff Hotel in Sandton, a suburb of Johannesburg. From there we traveled to the campus to celebrate the true purpose of this stunning gathering: the opening of Oprah's leadership academy for girls.

Video Download: Candid Mariah in Aspen
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 05-Jan-2007, 1:40PM EST
Mariah was filmed with a hidden camera while inside an Aspen store chatting with a group of people on December 23, 2006. Here you can see Mariah talking about her dog Jack (mostly), briefly mentioning her Elizabeth Arden fragrance, how she's covering her head because her hair was a mess, among other things!

[ Video removed ]

This video was recorded by a fan with a hidden camera. We thought that the candid video was too cute to share with the fans. While some loved and understood it, others were enraged for "invading Mariah's privacy." We at MariahJournal, therefore, have decided to remove the video. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

--Mariah's back in the U.S.? The Gawker reports that Mariah was spotted coming out of Wolfgang's Steakhouse at 409 Greenwich St. looking good & styling a green dress and getting into her Maybach on Jan. 3rd, 2007 at 9pm.

--In her column at The Voice, Jasmine Dotiwala gets us all anxious for her article next week! Today she writes, "2007 is off to a rocketing start for me as I'm spending the holidays with my Xmas family - courtesy of Ms. Mariah Carey (tell you all about that next week dahhlings 'cos it's difficult to focus on work while hitching a ride on a private jet with a masseuse attending to us both)." Aww!

--Real-life photographer Selma Fonseca weighs in on what it's actually like chasing down celebrities with a lens. In a recent interview with New York Daily News, asked which celebrities have been great to work with, she replies:

"The best celebrities to work with are the ones that are confident with themselves, they are always camera-ready, and they know they will be photographed - like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Mariah Carey, Lil' Kim, P. Diddy, Ben Affleck and, of course, Paris Hilton. They are nice to everyone, to their fans, people on the streets and photographers. My experience of unfriendly celebs was with Jay-Z, Ed Harris and Leo DiCaprio."

--Artist David Hevel usually begins his sculptures with an exotic animal, a taxidermy form, which he then matches to a celebrity’s personality. He has made Tyra Banks into a giraffe, Britney Spears into a baboon and Mariah Carey into a goat.

About to be pounced upon by the tiger was Mariah Carey as a goat standing precariously on piles of small silk pillows. Mariah's teeth seemed a bit pearlescent. Hevel said the goat, though life-sized, was not so true to form. He mentioned that the head looked better closer to the hip so he'd cut out part of the body. Also draped in jewels and radiating sparkly golden butterflies, Mariah gazed across the gallery at a tiny gold-leafed deer called Little Lord Suri, representing the incredibly hyped, already super-famous child of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

For his presentation at the Cohen Gallery this month, David is taking a simpler approach. It's called "Diva Hound Smack Down at the Grammys." To the right are photos of the Mariah 'goat' art courtesy of Heather Marx Gallery.

--According to year-end sales figures released today by Nielsen SoundScan, U.S. album sales continued to decline in 2006, down nearly 5 percent from the previous year. The top-selling album of the year was a soundtrack inspired by the Disney Channel movie "High School Musical," which sold more than 3.7 million copies. The top sellers in 2006 were no match for the biggest albums of previous years. Mariah Carey sold nearly 5 million copies of "The Emancipation of Mimi" in 2005, and 50 Cent's "Massacre" was close behind at 4.8 million.

--As previously reported [MJ 12/12/06 News], this January, YG Entertainment is releasing an animated ringtone for reggae artist Skull's first single, "Boom di, Boom di," from his upcoming album. Mariah Carey's brother, Morgan, who is producing the animated ringtone hopes to take reggae to another level in the multimedia world. "There's always a lull before the industry stampede to take advantage of emerging technologies, I wanted to be leading that charge," he says.

Diane Sawyer, Chris Rock, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Star Jones Reynolds - they all came for today's incredible celebration. The stars were all equally emotional and excited to be part of the day.

Mariah: "This is such a huge accomplishment, and I know it's something so close to [Oprah's] heart."

After years of construction, the doors to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy have opened.

Here's something you may not know. The original design for the library did not have a fireplace, but Oprah said that will never do, and after Mariah Carey saw the heart, she told me, "I can't believe it, it is incredible." And Mariah has already volunteered for a teaching assignment: Music Producing 101.

ET: "So you could be like a visiting professor?"
Mariah: "Well, I don't know if I'd go that far, darling, but we'll write a hot song."

Oprah's SA School Gets A Star-Studded Opening
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 02-Jan-2007, 10:10AM EST
Oprah Winfrey's long-awaited school opened Tuesday, fulfilling a promise she made to former President Nelson Mandela six years ago and giving more than 150 girls a chance for a better future.

"I wanted to give this opportunity to girls who had a light so bright that not even poverty could dim that light," Winfrey said at a news conference.

Mandela was among the guests at the opening of the lavish Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in the small town of Henley-on-Klip, south of Johannesburg.

"This is a lady that has, despite her own disadvantaged background, become one of the benefactors of the disadvantaged throughout the world," Mandela said in a statement.

Singers Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, actors Sidney Poitier and Chris Tucker and director Spike Lee also were in attendance. Each guest was asked to bring a personally inscribed book for the library.

"In one of MTV's most popular shows, Mariah first takes her t-shirt off and then starts giving ice cream to the crowd. After watching that, it is clear that she either was drunk or had gone mad."

Two Albums from Mariah
"Mariah Carey isn't willing to have a break after having risen from the ashes with the release of "The Emancipation of Mimi" in 2005.
The diva is planning to work on new projects in the new year after concluding the "Mimi"-era with the "The Adventures of Mimi Tour", which earned her two #1 singles making her the most succesful female singer ever. According to Universal Music's CEO Doug Morris, Carey will be releasing two albums in 2007. One of them is the new studio album that she has just started working on, and the other one is either a soundtrack album from her new movie, "Tennesee", whose shooting starts in January, or a live album from one of the concerts of the tour, along with a tour DVD, that will be released soon."
