Mariah To Appear On New PETA Billboard
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 31-Jan-2011, 6:56PM EST
Lady Gaga's infamous "meat dress" may have drawn the ire of PETA, but that hasn't stopped the animal-rights organization from featuring her — along with fellow icons Pink and Mariah Carey — on a brand-new billboard, set to be unveiled Tuesday in Los Angeles.
It's part of PETA's "Fur-Free and Fabulous" campaign, and, despite the fallout over her Video Music Awards outfit, Gaga was chosen because, as PETA puts it in a press release, "Her anti-fur stance... has been unwavering."
PETA also selected Pink and Carey for the billboard — which will be raised on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles — because of their longtime anti-fur stances. Pink, who recently co-starred with comedian Ricky Gervais in PETA's "Stolen for Fashion" video short, once allegedly called out Beyonce for wearing fur, and Carey famously donated a pair of full-length Russian sable coats she had received as gifts to PETA, who, in turn, gave them to homeless women at their winter "fur kitchen" event.
With the new billboard, Gaga, Pink and Carey join a list of stars who have teamed with the organization to come out against fur. Last year's "Fur-Free and Fabulous" ad featured Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
Mariah and Nick Get Ready for Twins' Arrival
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 30-Jan-2011, 11:08AM EST
In an exclusive interview with Nick Cannon Saturday, the America's Got Talent host spoke to RadarOnline.com about becoming a new dad, life with wife Mariah Carey and his special Valentine's Day plans.
"I'm extremely excited about bringing new life into the world," Cannon told us as he emceed Kellogg's Crunchy Nut cereal's U.S. launch. "It's a journey every single day. It's something new. I'm nervous. I'm excited. We're just taking it one day at a time."
Cannon, 30, who married 40-year-old diva-extraordinaire Mariah on April 30, 2008, had nothing but praise for his pregnant wife.
"She's holding up beautifully. To see this strength! It's a different type of strength to carry around two babies," Cannon says. "She's not even concerned with her aches and pains which I'm sure are great. She's so nurturing right now. It's wonderful. It's amazing to see."
And don't expect Mariah to be carrying around baby weight after she's given birth! Cannon shares with us Mariah's cooking secret that curbs her pregnancy cravings.
"I think she's figured out brilliantly that when she craves stuff she doesn't necessarily have to eat it," Cannon says. "When she cooks, she cooks everything from scratch and then the cravings go away. So I get stuck with eating all the food. I'll be gaining weight during this pregnancy."
The always jovial Cannon was mum when asked the sex of the twins and what he and Mariah plan on naming them. But he did dish some details on what he and Mimi have bought for the twins' room.
"Last night we went nursery and furniture shopping," he told us. "They're going to have a very interesting layout. We picked a lot of colors and one of the main colors is green."
And as Valentine's Day approaches, Cannon says he's got something special planned for Mariah.
"I'm a hopeless romantic so Valentine's Day is very important to me," the actor says. "I'm going to bring Valentine's Day to my wife. I'll probably Valentine's the house out. We're gonna put balloons, flowers, all of that stuff everywhere."

Legendary singer/songwriter Chaka Khan recently sat down with B. Scott and opened up about a number of topics. Among the highlights include the R&B legend candidly discussing her stellar career, past substance abuse and how she feels about fellow diva Mariah Carey, who she says is a good friend of hers.
"Mariah is one of the few people that I love in this business and she's a sweet girl. I would suit up and show up for her. Now there are a lot of people I wouldn't [do that for]. She's one of the few, because most of my friends are people who work at the post office and at the bank. [Just] regular people."

Lopez Dismisses Feud with Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 21-Jan-2011, 12:10PM EST
Jennifer Lopez has dismissed reports that she is feuding with Mariah Carey.
The singer, who is gearing up for her music comeback this year, insisted that she is a "big fan" of Carey and that the pair have never been in competition with each other.
Asked by Carey's husband Nick Cannon on his radio show if there was a "beef" between the two, she said: "Never has been for me at all. No, no, I've always been a big fan of hers. It's all love from me. I feel really blessed in my life, and it's not a competition with other people - it's a competition with myself."
Lopez also congratulated Cannon on Carey's pregnancy, insisting: "You're going to love it. I promise it's going to be the best thing that ever happened to you guys and I'm so excited for you!"

Fierce Bidding War for First Pics of Mariah's Twins?
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 20-Jan-2011, 9:03PM EST
No danger of Mariah Carey's twins going short of anything...
A £10million bidding war has already broken out for the first pics of the pop star's sprogs, due this spring.
A Mirror insider says: "Major magazines and several news agencies have been ringing non-stop to get their hands on the first pics of Mariah's babies. Mariah's decorating identical nurseries in her homes in LA and New York. She'll have special sound systems so the babies can get into the groove with all the nursery rhymes." Yes, really.

Jasmine's Juice: New Year's Eve with the Cannons
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 20-Jan-2011, 9:39AM EST
So after Christmas in Utah with the Cannons (Mariah and Nick) we flew back to LA where we stayed in the Cannons' guest room which Mrs C had also turned into a little home recording studio. To see her vocal booth customised with pink initials and butterflies and note her song writing pads in the room was breathtaking as I acknowledged that this was a sacred space where hit upon hit was written.
Awakening daily to look out across the Bel Air Hills and at the stunning LA view is a sight to behold. Certainly an inspiration to do as well as you can in life and make the most of every moment. Mrs C is truly in domestic mode as she cooked a variety of Italian specialities for our dinner daily. And when I say cooked I mean totally fresh from scratch. No cook-in sauces for this lady as she chops, peels and crushes herb after herb and patiently enjoys her "cooking with Mrs Cannon" moment.
It was now only a couple of days before New Year's Eve but we managed to fit in a fair amount of fun before the clock struck 12. I enjoyed a couple of moments in the Cannons' hot tub overlooking the twinkling lights of the city, we visited our favourite LA shopping area - The Grove - again, we rented a car to get us around and had much fun keeping up with the crazy LA traffic and mad drivers as we missed exit after exit on the notorious 405 freeway - so called cos you can be stuck on it for 4 or 5 hours!
Finally New Year's Eve was upon us and after I called and wished my UK folk a great night with a prosperous year ahead, I settled down to help Mr C and the crew prepare the party room for the 40 or so guests that were expected that night. Mr C was checking his decks whilst we arranged party hats, poppers, beads, top hats and balloons strategically around the room to make it look as festive as Mrs C would expect.
This year the party was a very small, intimate gathering of close family and friends. Debbie Allen - the amazing dancer/actress from the legendary FAME series, who is also good friends with Mariah - made a seafood gumbo and we all indulged in that and a feast of soul food. The bar was overseen by Mrs C who ensured that all her guests had a drink to hand. Everyone danced and were merry and at midnight it was ridiculously festive with confetti bombs and hugs and kisses all round. A lovely L.A New Year's Eve start to 2011.
I also spent a long girly 2-hour catch up session in Mrs C's pool with her as she exercised and we discussed everything under the sun from music, life, love, family, and nappies! Yes - nappies or diapers as the Americans call them - were a topic that was intriguing. I even saw a shooting star!
Mariah Mention in Billboard
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 19-Jan-2011, 2:42PM EST
Britney Spears becomes just the second artist in the Billboard Hot 100's 52-year history to debut multiple songs at No. 1, as "Hold It Against Me" blasts in at the summit.
Spears previously launched at the apex with "3" the week of Oct. 24, 2009. She joins Mariah Carey as the only acts to arrive at No. 1 more than once. Carey made such grand entrances with "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day" in 1995 and "Honey" in 1997.
On Radio Songs, "Hold It Against Me" begins at No. 23 with 45 million first-week audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The song's No. 23 entrance is the chart's best since Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" began at the same rank the week of March 1, 2008.
"Hold It Against Me" also ties Madonna's "Frozen" (No. 16, March 7, 1998) for second-highest launch on the Pop Songs chart. Only Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" began at a higher rank, having rocketed in at No. 12 the week of August 14, 1993.

Randy Rates J Lo/Gaga: "They're Not Like Mariah"
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 19-Jan-2011, 9:34AM EST
It's a good thing Jennifer Lopez isn't getting in front of Randy Jackson for an assessment of her talent anytime soon. On Jimmy Kimmel Live last night (Jan. 18), American Idol's veteran judge was asked to rate Lopez's singing ability on a scale of one to 10. His answer? "She would definitely get a strong, solid 7," he said to host Jimmy Kimmel's surprise. After all, a 7 pretty much amounts to a C-.
"A seven's really good," Jackson insisted. "She doesn't have the biggest voice in the world, but she can sing. It's the package -- look at Britney, Ke$ha, Gaga, they're not like my girl Mariah Carey..."
The head scratching continued when Kimmel inquired as to where Lady Gaga would land on the scale. "I'd probably give her a 7 as well," said Jackson, prompting another double-take from the host, who remarked, "You believe Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez are on equal status?"
After a moment of deliberation, Jackson back-pedaled: "OK, I give Gaga an 8."
Ouch! Maybe what they're saying about Randy turning to the harsh side is true. Unapologetic and wholly unintimidated, in taking Simon Cowell's seat at the table, has some of the former judge's TV savagery managed to seep through the leather? We'll find out soon enough: Season 10 premieres tonight!
Mariah Fans Unite for Queensland Flood Victims
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 17-Jan-2011, 10:47AM EST
The state of Queensland in Australia has been hit by devastating floods over the past few weeks, and the destruction has been huge and hundreds of thousands of people have been severely affected.
Mariah fan Jessica Issa and members of Mariah Carey Down Under have come together to launch an International Mariah Fan Fundraiser in the hopes of securing donations from Mariah fans from around the world to aid the flood victims. Jessica writes:
Mariah often describes us as being part of her extended family, and in many ways we are. I also think we're an amazing international community. The solidarity that exists between us is remarkable. When Mariah needs us, we do our best to give her any support we can. When a fan is in need we all give our prayers and thoughts. It is my faith in the genuine spirit that exists in all true Mariah lambs that has me asking for a favour.
As you may know the state of Queensland in Australia has been struck by horrific floods for the past several weeks. Over 75% of the whole state is now flooded. Lives have been lost, thousands and thousands of homes have been destroyed, thousands of businesses have been ruined and hundreds of thousands of people have been horribly affected. The worst of the floods is yet to come, and already there has been tens of billions of dollars worth of damage. It is a national disaster with a reconstruction task of post-war proportions.
So Australian Mariah fans have come together to create a "Lambs For Queensland" - An International Mariah Carey Fan Fundraiser. We are appealing to the charitiable spirit that exists within all Mariah fans and are seeking donations from all international fans. Any donation, whether it's $5 or $100 will benefit the victims of this natural disaster.
In appreciation of your donation, Aussie fans have donated a large amount of Mariah CD singles, albums, promo cds & items AUTOGRAPHED by Mariah to be received by donator's by random draw. This is not a competition but a mere thank you. We are seeking your generosity to help the hundreds of thousands of people affected by this horrific national nightmare. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and hope the power of worldwide lambs united will help many in need.
Nelly Inspired By Mariah Carey
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 15-Jan-2011, 10:37AM EST
Nelly is inspired by Mariah Carey for his career comeback.
The "Hot In Herre" hitmaker has never matched the success of his first two albums, 2000's Country Grammer and Nellyville in 2002 but insists he will never give up because he knows he can regain his popularity one day.
He said: "Look at Mariah Carey. She has a little break. People look at it like it's over. They have to throw dirt on her. Then all of a sudden, she's the biggest thing to hit the stage again. Even bigger. You see what I'm saying, and I think that happens. So when you look at it like that, you've got to apply yourself."
The 36-year-old star even wants to use the negative comments of his critics to further fuel his desire to achieve chart success again.
He added: "I feel like, if people want to count me out - which I don't know how you would count a guy out with 30 million records sold - then OK, I'm going to use it to my advantage. And I just felt that, since you don't want to acknowledge me, or if you want to act like I don't exist then good, don't check for me. But you will eventually hear from me - and it works better that way."
NOTE: In an interview with MTV back in July 2006, Nelly expressed the same admiration for Mariah. He said, "Mariah Carey, she's possibly the best singer I've heard. And you watch someone such as Mariah, who went from the highest of the high to the lowest of the low, and come back like she never missed a beat, and stand up and smack everybody in the face like, 'I'm still here; matter of fact I'm better,' that gives you inspiration. That keeps me going."
Mariah is Due to Give Birth in Late April/Early May!

Yesterday on his 92.3NOW FM morning show, Nick Cannon, conducting a live in-studio interview with filmmaker Spike Lee and his wife Tonya, let slip that Mariah is due to give birth to their twins in late April or early May, and that one of the twins may be a boy! Check out the video below! You can see Nick talk about it at around the 7:55 mark into the video.
Mariah: The Champion of R&B/Hip Hop Movement
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 14-Jan-2011, 5:47PM EST
When we look back at junior high school, we remember the shock and awe of seeing artists switch genres. Does anyone remember this time? When Fred Durst ruled the world and the word mash-up was unheard of. When hearing that a rapper and a rock star even partied in the same club caused people eyes to roll. Everyone stayed in their lane and played their positions and then people were like "You know how we can make people sh** their pants??! Fred Durst and Method Man on a song together!" Some of you may be lost because you grew up after this era but trust us: if Travis Barker made a cameo in a Bad Boy video circa '98 we would've faked the flu to see it premiere "Spanking New" on MTV. Suddenly it was a trend and then a standard. Now there really are no genre boundaries in music.
It's evolution and survival of the fittest, etcetera etcetera, but if we had an endangered music list now the bald eagle on it would be R&B. Long ago every song on the radio was not Young Money but rather a different kind of smooth falsetto, bass bumping, we finna go half on a baby gloria to all things sexy. It was back in the days when SWV ran the earth, Aaliyah was princess and R. Kelly could do no wrong except engage in questionable marriage practices.
It was high time for R&B and nothing seemed to be able to ever break that. Rappers in the 90s could not have a radio hit without the audience being able to dance to it and back then nobody danced to hip hop. When you went out the DJ might break into some hip hop so numbers and zodiac signs could be exchanged but we all knew what they were going to play for 2/3rds of the party. The trick was to add some R&B/old soul to the beat and then even though you were rapping some woman would be able to grind herself into her next morning mistake. Take Biggie's "One More Chance", "Big Poppa", "Juicy" and "Mo' Money Mo' Problems". All were easily 4 of his biggest hits and they all featured either a hook with female vocals or a sample that could've had Coko of SWV saaaangin her heart out on it. What about Fabolous? Almost every song of his that has ever had popular radio success has been with an R&B singer (see: Make Me Better, So Into You and Can't Let You Go). Still don't believe me? The entire idea of the remix was created to infuse hip hop and R&B. Missy Elliot dropping a verse on anything coming through the airwaves? Mary J Blige would flip the verses onto a hip hop sample and call Puffy for anybody on his roster who was running sh**. The champion of this movement: Mariah Carey. To this day ODB and Mariah may still be the best and most random hip hop collaboration of all time and no matter where you play that song if the people are over 20 years old the entire crowd will yell "ME AND MARIAH GO BACK LIKE BABIES WITH PACIFIERS". ODB wasn't just touching on his relationship with Mariah or his fantasy of one but also the truth of their positions— R&B and Hip Hop were the best of step siblings.
Related: In May 2007, MDJ's Looking In columnist Jason in his blog entry, "Mariah's Pacifiah Grows Into A Movement," talked about the Mariah pairing with ODB - how it made waves and opened up a new avenue of popularity in music. Read it here.

Jasmine's Juice: Christmas with the Cannons
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 12-Jan-2011, 9:45AM EST
Jasmine with the Cannons and friends on the Christmas sleigh ride
I know we're already 2 weeks into 2011 but I only just finished my Christmas adventure which this year was longer than ever! Why not!? I deserve it! I work damn hard all year and you know what they say - work hard, play as hard. My annual end of year frolic with the Cannons (Mariah and Nick) this year began in L.A. mid December. We flew out to my cousin Jani's lair where for a solid week it rained more torrentially than I've ever witnessed in the UK. It was heavy, non-stop 24-7 pouring cats and dogs. On December 21st we flew into Utah for Christmas week. As Mrs Cannon is pregnant it was decided that our usual Aspen jaunt would be a little too high altitude wise for the Carey-Cannon twins to breathe as the oxygen is so thin up that high - it's bad enough for us folks outside the womb! We've been to Aspen in the past where friends have been hospitalised by altitude sickness so the idea of the Cannon twins somersaulting in Mrs Cannon's tummy unable to breathe was not pip. Utah on the other hand is just as snowy, magical and surrounded by mountains and canyons so we all jetted off to Park City where we enjoyed a really relaxed, picturesque, once-in-a-lifetime vacation.
In most of the UK's cities we can't even imagine what the snowy hilltops and mountains in Utah look like. They're breathtaking, picture postcard images that you think only exist in old world postcards. We stayed near somewhere called 'Lambs Canyon' which if you know about Mariah you know was VERY appropriate.
The Cannons do very traditional Christmas with stunning magical mountains, covered with snow glistening like millions of diamonds, homes that look like ginger bread cribs with white sugar frosting perching aside the hills. Winter vacation homes in the snow are all similar with varying levels of extreme fabulosity. All are golden wood structures with numerous pillars and alcoves, high ceilings, a multitude of levels, playrooms that contain pool tables, wii consoles, karaoke machines, cinema rooms, and a number of en suite bedrooms. They also include luxuries like roaring log fires (which I tried to build myself a couple of times but then was banned in case I killed us all with smoke poisoning or worse!), a giant main Christmas tree in the living room, a second tree in the playroom for dressing on Christmas eve, a big family kitchen where families gather around the island worktop, a hot tub outside overlooking the twinkling lights of the city, and of course a view straight out of a block buster movie. This trip was different to all the rest as the Cannons are pregnant and that put a whole new, calm, blessed spin on festivities. We were excited just to be all together.
Daily our meals were a group effort led by our Swedish friends Kristen and Josephine so we referred to meal times as 'Kristen's Kitchen.' Bedrooms with 4 poster princess style beds were made extremely good use of, the 4 Cannon puppies (JJ, Cha-Cha, Dolomite and Jackie Lambchop) were as ever as cute and rambunctious as ever running around causing pandemonium, playing in the snow. I took them all for a daily walk which in itself was a crazy, fun task as they legged it up and down the hills dragging us into deep 4 foot snow drifts as they sniffed out wild deer. We ventured out very few times to shop in town, which had both a quaint little old world town as well as massive fashion malls with 75 store minimum outlets.
At the start of the trip Mariah reminded us of her usual vacation rule where we are requested not to spend 24-7 on our electronic gadgets. Between us there were a lot of Macs, Blackberrys and iPads so it was a relief that the rule was set. After all who wants to spend such a once-in-a-lifetime moment with all around them being anti social on their texts and e-mails all day long. So imagine my delight and joy when one afternoon as she popped out for a quick shop and I sneakily logged onto my Mac, I caught her slipping as she had just tweeted! Now the problem was, did I acknowledge I myself had broken the rule in order to catch her? Her bro Shawn and I decided it would be worth the jokes to out her so we told her off via Twitter. She gave as good as she got and cussed us back! Good times!
The one thing we were allowed to overrule the rule was playing wii - we tried bowling and other sports but it was the Michael Jackson dance game that had us all sweating, screaming, dancing and singing at the top of our voices for hours! I won 3 games, Nick won 3 games but our friend Rachel's daughter, lil' 15 year Sade got the highest perfect score! (She is after all a dancer and we'd expect nothing less!). The workout was pretty crazy up in that high mountain altitude, though and 3 of us went through 12 bottles of water in an hour.
One night we decided that Mrs C needed pampering what with the usual pregnancy aches and pains taking their toll so all the girls pitched in to give her girl time with hand, foot and head massages with hot oil until she fell asleep.
Many nights we jumped into the hot tub (minus Mrs C) watching the twinkling stars in the ink black sky, minus the usual annual festive flute of champagne for obvious reasons. One particular hot tub moment of hilarity came when 3 of us were in the hot tub trying to persuade Nick to join us. He was of course making the usual 'black men don't do snow in their underwear' noises.
We also spent our nights after dinner playing games like Balderdash and Catchphrase. I should be used to it but whenever the answer to the clue I'm giving comes up as "Mariah Carey" or "Nick Cannon" it's the weirdest. Surreal. Imagine being the answer in a board game?
There was one particular night when I was so angry I could've exploded. Throughout our years of friendship we have always had the fun UK vs. USA banter. This night was one to remember. My word that I had to have my team guess was "cracker-jack." I was able to have my team guess the word 'Jack' easily as that's the name of Mariah's first most loved dog and the world's most famous canine after his adventures with Mimi. Then I attempted to describe a Christmas cracker - the type that you pull at the dinner table, which contains paper party hats and gifts. Well, a whole screaming drama occurred as I didn't realise Americans had no clue what a Christmas cracker was. No one knew what a "paper filled column containing gifts and hats that's placed at the dinner table" was. I was cussed solidly for my efforts and when I looked to my fellow Brit for support to confirm that Christmas crackers existed he abandoned me as he was on opposing team America! Vex.com.
On Christmas Eve we had our usual Midnight mass - at home this year - with our friend pastor Kase leading the proceedings. It was a warm, traditional, festive ceremony that we all partook in and reminded ourselves about the true meaning of the holiday. The same night we were treated to Mrs C's special clam linguini with stuffed shells, baked clams, garlic bread, salad and authentic red tomato sauce that was delish!
Our Christmas day sleigh ride was very calm compared to most years as Mrs C is up the duff "carrying dem babies." Usually we hurtle through a crazy, bumpy ride through the forest. This year we were ultra careful to ensure the slope was smooth and bump free. After all we had our own bump to look after and protect LOL! However we still sang Christmas songs and Mrs C's new Christmas album (particularly "Oh Santa!" at the top of our voices!).
In past years we've attempted to reason with Mr C about not waking us at 6am, dressed as Santa to open our gifts. Hilariously, it's taken us this many years to just accept it's going to happen. So at 8am after his wife asked him to let us sleep a little longer, 'Saint Nick' woke us traditional style with a cowbell and pounding on doors dressed as Santa.
My gifts included a gigantic bottle of hot pepper sauce packed and presented in my name. It was so heavy to pick up and hold that I've had to leave it at the Cannons on their bar area in case anyone should ever request a bloody Mary!
I got the usual necessity gifts too like hats, scarves, and smellies, as well as some lovely trinkets and framed photos but my favourites were a flip camera and a pair of Mariah Carey black quilted chain boots that she designed for the HOME SHOPPING NETWORK that I'll be rolling around with in 2011.
I particularly look forward to American-style Christmas dinner, which this year was bib lettuce, basil-buttermilk dressing, fresh cranberry sauce, traditional mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, candied yams, mac and cheese, collard greens, corn on the cob, stuffing, buttermilk biscuits, turkey, deep fried turkey, honey baked ham, rib roast, dessert, cherry pie, pecan pie, sweet potato pie. Tell me your mouth isn't watering just reading that.
On December 28th we took our last mountain walk with the crazy dog circus and drove back through the canyons to Salt Lake City airport where we jetted back to Los Angeles for New Year. Roll on 2011!
"Fantasy" on Slant's "Best Singles of the '90s"
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 11-Jan-2011, 12:56PM EST
Each day this week, Slant Magazine will be unveiling 20 of their picks for the Best Singles of the '90s. In day 2 of their countdown, Mariah cracks the #80-61 list with "Fantasy" at #61. Here's what they had to say about the song.
61. Mariah Carey, "Fantasy." Mariah's "Fantasy" remains one of the finest examples of reworking an extensive sample into a fully realized pop masterpiece. The funky, warbling strains of Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" come ringing through immediately, and there's no great effort to disguise any of the borrowed elements. And though the stripped-down remix, which brilliantly entwines the bridge portions with O.D.B's absurd rap ("Japan, are you in the house?"), is considered by some to be the definitive version, the original is escapism perfected, a summer bubblegum gem with a sweet, flawless vocal line driven by a diva in her prime.
Slant's countdown of the "Best Singles of the '90s" continues tomorrow with #s 60 - 41. Let's see what other Mariah songs will make it on the list.
Update - Friday, Jan. 14, 2011:Slant's countdown of the "Best Singles of the '90s" has concluded today. Only "Fantasy" made it onto the list.
Darlene Love Loves Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 10-Jan-2011, 10:54PM EST
As a girl belting out gospel songs in her local church choir, Darlene Love could never have envisioned the pinnacle she'll reach on March 14. That's when she will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other music greats as a 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.
Now 72, Love earned her chops performing with Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, the Beach Boys, Tom Jones and others who dominated the charts. Overpowering as those stars might have been, the three-time hall of fame nominee said she trusted her own drive. "I always believe that if something is going to happen, it will happen," she said. "I never gave up hope. If you keep your dreams in front of your face, they will happen."
More gracious than bodacious, the vocalist shared with WWD images and impressions from her past: Spector's gun-playing ways, Elvis' shyness, Cher as a low-key young singer, and her favorite singers of today...
WWD: What do you think of how performers dress today? D.L.: I think it's amazing. I'm just thanking God I didn't have to wear that. I'm still conservative. I show a little cleavage and a little leg, but that's about it. As far as things are today, sometimes I say to myself, 'Is it about their talent or their bodies? Is it about singing or taking their clothes off?' It's another era, just as we were a different era.
WWD: Do you have a few favorites today? D.L.: Beyoncé is right at the top. And I love Mariah Carey. Those are the two I will sing along with, especially Beyoncé when she was with her group. I am really kind of proud how they have been able to sustain themselves and have a career all these years.

"One Sweet Day" on KOST 103.5's Behind The Song
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 05-Jan-2011, 12:33AM EST
Last Monday, January 3, 2011, Mark and Kristin's morning show on KOST 103.5 FM in Los Angeles, CA featured the story behind the biggest hit of all time, Mariah and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," in its Behind The Song segment. Listen below.
"ONE SWEET DAY" - Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men "When Boyz II Men were touring with MC Hammer, tragedy struck. They were in Chicago asleep in their hotel rooms. Nate Morris, one of the members of the group woke up startled. He didn't know what but he knew something was wrong. Unable to get back to sleep he turned on the TV and saw a breaking news story. There had been a shooting at a nightclub in town. The reporter said that a member of the Boyz II Men tour had been shot and killed. It was their bodyguard, one of Nate's closest friends. He was like a father to the group. Nate started writing a song about him but he never finished it. Then a couple of years later an arrangement was made for Boyz II Men to record a song with Mariah Carey. It would pair the most successful vocal group with the world's no. 1 female vocalist. But you know what, there was no song waiting for them to record together. Instead, they met in a studio and began discussing what they were going to do. Mariah had recently lost a few friends to accidents and AIDS. She began singing a song she was working on about the loss. And Nate's face lit up. The song Mariah was singing was almost identical to the one he'd been writing about the group's slain friend. He began singing his song and it went perfectly with Mariah's song. The room froze in silence. Somehow this meeting was anointed from above. The six superstars began to carve out a new song together inspired by the losses in their lives. The result was a hit that stayed at no. 1 on the charts longer than any record before or since. Four months. And it was on the charts for a total of six months. This is Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men from December 1995; January, February and March of 1996. It's 'One Sweet Day' on Mark and Kristin's Behind The Song on KOST 103.5."
11 R&B/Hip-Hop No. 11s For '11
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2011, 4:12PM EST
On Billboard charts, the number 11 is often synonymous with frustration.
"No one wants to wind up at No. 2, 6 or 11, but of those, No. 11 is probably the worst," says Adrian Moreira, RCA/J/Arista Records senior vice president/adult music. "If you peak at No. 2, at least you can brag about reaching the top five. If you hit No. 6, a label can still market a track and/or artist as 'top 10.' But, if you peak at the dreaded No. 11, then the best you can boast is 'top 15,' which obviously doesn't sound as prestigious."
Still, a song's highest position on a Billboard chart doesn't always determine its legacy. Countless hits at various formats have outshined their runs as current songs.
As we ring in '11, Chart Beat is celebrating songs that, despite stopping short at No. 11 on Billboard charts, have become ubiquitous.
1. "Donna," Ritchie Valens, 1959 2. "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer," Nat "King" Cole, 1963 3. "Everlasting Love," Carl Carlton, 1974 4. "Shadow Dancing," Andy Gibb, 1978 5. "Just Once," James Ingram, 1981 6. "I Would Die 4 U," Prince and the Revolution, 1985 7. "Cross My Broken Heart," the Jets, 1987
8. "I'll Be There," Mariah Carey, 1992 The ballad from "MTV Unplugged" seemed destined for the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs top 10: the Jackson 5's 1970 original had spent six weeks at No. 1 and Carey had carried her previous seven singles to the top tier. Still, it became her sixth of 18 Hot 100 No. 1s, the most among solo artists.
9. "Nobody Knows," the Tony Rich Project, 1996 10. "The Real Slim Shady," Eminem, 2000 11. "SexyBack," Justin Timberlake, 2006
Billboard: 5 Great 'Auld Lang Syne' Performances
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2011, 10:16AM EST
At the stroke of midnight on January 1, revelers around the world wearing ridiculous hats will join arms with their loved ones and try to sing "Auld Lang Syne." We say "try" because, despite the fact that the Scottish song was composed more than 200 years ago, no one really seems to know the words. (Which makes sense, as most of us only attempt to sing it only once a year, in intoxicated states where remembering our own names is enough of a challenge.)
In an effort to start 2011 off on the right notes, Billboard has assembled videos of a few artists who do know the words to the song, and sing them well. Check out five of their favorite "Auld Lang Syne" performances, and listen as Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and more wish you a happy new year!
Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind Should old acquaintance be forgot, in days of auld lang syne For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne We'll take a cup o' kindness yet, in days of auld lang syne.
1. Mariah Carey (2010) — The diva starts off the way mom and dad remember it, but then quickly takes us to the club.
