Media Flashback #3: Patti Labelle

In 1998, Mariah joined her "fairy godmother" onstage for "Patti Labelle: Live! One Night Only." Filmed at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, the show was a recap of Labelle's phenomenal career. It was broadcast on PBS and later released to DVD.
Ask Billboard: What Songs Should've Been Singles?
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 29-Jan-2012, 6:17PM EST
Mariah is featured in this week's Billboard Chart Beat column, which features responses sent in by readers when asked the question "What album tracks over the years do you think should've been released as singles?"
This has bothered me for 17 years: why wasn't "When I Saw You" by Mariah Carey released as a single?
In 1995-96, Carey was at one of her (many) career peaks and this ballad could have easily been the fourth Hot 100 No. 1 from her album "Daydream." Columbia chose the admittedly beautiful '50s-styled "Forever" instead (although it didn't give that song a physical CD release).
"When," an ode to love at first sight, would've countered nicely to the themes of loss and longing featured on her other "Daydream"-era singles (i.e., "One Sweet Day"), not to mention its insanely hooky chorus where Carey belts out 16 bars of melisma - without ever taking a breath! (Maybe that's why she, as far I know, has never performed it live?)
Such a shame because this track should've been huge (and still could be a hit today).
Artie O'Daly West Hollywood, California
I like "When I Saw You," too, although I can't argue with Columbia having released "Forever." It was actually a bold choice, as not many songs on pop radio in recent decades sound like "Unchained Melody." The waltz rose to No. 9 on Pop Songs in summer 1996.
This e-mail, in fact, deserves its own countdown! Here are my picks for Carey's top five songs that should've been singles, guided by my radio background that taught me that a hook outweighs any other attributes a song may have. Had they been released, Carey might have already passed the Beatles (20) for most Hot 100 No. 1s. She currently has 18.
5, "Languishing (The Interlude)," from "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (2009). Maybe if Carey had recorded the song in full and not just as a 2-minute, 33-second filler track, it would've been a stronger single candidate. Still, she packs the song's short length with a memorably catchy chorus.
4, "So Blessed," from "Emotions" (1991). Carey even covered the song, similar in sound to "When I Saw You," on 1992's "MTV Unplugged" EP.
Tie 3, "Reflections (Care Enough)"/"Lead the Way," from "Glitter" (2001). Yes, I'm aware that "Glitter" is one of the most maligned movies in cinema history. Too bad, because I've always felt that its soundtrack contains two of her best ballads. "Lead" was co-written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, who teamed to pen her hits "Can't Let Go," "Hero" and "Anytime You Need a Friend" (plus the No. 1 song ahead on this ranking.)
2, "Whenever You Call," from "Butterfly" (1997). It seemed that the ballad might finally become a single when Carey rerecorded it as a duet with Brian McKnight and revived it on her 1998 compilation "#1's." Although a video was filmed, the song never became a radio single.
1, "All I Ever Wanted," from "Music Box" (1993). Despite her catalog of monster hit singles, my two favorite songs of Carey's are the seasonal "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and this ballad (also co-written with Afanasieff). Who knows, had "All" become the fourth single from "Music Box" instead of the No. 12 Hot 100 hit "Anytime You Need a Friend," Carey might've extended her career-opening streak of top 10s to 12. Instead, her run halted at 11, still a Hot 100 record among new artists matched since by only one act, the singer that prompted this discussion when her streak stopped with the No. 29-peaking "Marry the Night": Lady Gaga.
Media Flashback #2: Chit-Chat With Bianca
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 28-Jan-2012, 6:00PM EST
In 1999, Mariah introduced us to her alter ego Bianca, a dark-haired vixen with a poor attitude who gets caught at a movie with Mariah's boyfriend in the "Heartbreaker" video. Despite the two getting into a nasty catfight in the theatre's bathroom, Bianca soon thereafter sat down to interview Mariah for the MTV News segment "Chit Chat With Bianca."
Media Flashback #1: Charmbracelet Tour in New York City
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 27-Jan-2012, 10:00AM EST
In 2003, Mariah took the world by storm with The Charmbracelet Tour: An Intimate Evening. Beginning in June in Seoul, South Korea, and ending on February 26, 2004 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the tour was Mariah's longest to date, with over 70 dates on four continents.
On September 18, 2003, Mariah brought the show to Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Featuring 17 songs, 8 wardrobe changes, and an improvised band introduction, the show received great reviews:
You can say one thing for Mariah Carey: She sure knows how to make an entrance. The Long Island-born songstress opened her concert at Radio City last night with a leisurely strut down one of the theater's center aisles, flanked by 10 dancers pretending to be photographers... Putting a hand to her right ear, she cut loose with a trademark wail that rocketed somewhere up into the household-pet frequency. The jubilant crowd, in turn, screeched out their best attempt at a response...
Carey soon put to rest any belief that she'd lost her vocal firepower. On showcase ballads like "My All" and "Can't Take That Away," she milked the big moments for all they were worth, frantically pacing the stage, even dropping to her knees in the middle of a crucial line... Finishing with a trio of guaranteed crowd-pleasers ("Make It Happen," "Vision of Love," and "Hero"), the top-selling female artist in pop music rolled out a few more glass-shattering high notes and basked in the love of her fans.

Mariah to Perform at Mawazine Festival in Morocco
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 25-Jan-2012, 8:45AM EST
Mariah will close the Mawazine Festival in Rabat, Morocco on May 26th at 10 PM. This will be her first time performing in the country of Morocco.
Mawazine ("Rhythms") is a festival of world music that began in 2001 and takes place annually, featuring Arab and international music icons. In years past, the festival has featured superstars such as Sting, Shakira, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Kanye West, Kylie Minogue, Joe Cocker, Sugababes, and Elton John. In addition to Mariah, this year's roster includes LMFAO and Scorpions.
Here is the official press release from the festival's website (roughly translated from French):
To close the 11th annual Mawazine Festival, global star Mariah Carey, with her extraordinary voice, will sing her songs on the scene of the OLM Souissi on Saturday, May 26, 2012.
This famous American diva likes Morocco and does not hide it. Impassioned by the Moroccan culture, the singer made installed a Moroccan living room in her apartment in New York, in which her current husband, Nick Cannon, proposed to her. In its honor and homage to this happy memory, they named one of their twins Moroccan Scott in April 2011. It is thus natural that she is enthusiastic to be in Rabat, where it is common to very seldom play in music festivals.
The aspect of this concert that will attract many fans is that this artist is famous not only in Morocco, but abroad. She received innumerable rewards such as 5 Grammy Awards, 11 American Music Awards, 28 Billboard Music Awards, 2 American Heroes Awards, Rolling Stone Award, 17 World Music Award. She has to her credit 13 studio albums, 9 compilations and more than one hundred singles. She also acted in several films and TV series.
Mariah Carey is a singer, producer and American actress born in the United States in 1970. Her exceptional voice is equipped with the talent to sing 5 octaves. She is one of the most popular female singers of the 1990s in the United States and it is often quoted like one of the most influential voices and artists in pop music. She is the writer and interpreter of songs which ensured international success.
Her career started with odd jobs in New York. She met the producer Tommy Mottola, and he heard the songs she recorded. The man is sure to have discovered a revelation. He quickly had her sign a contract of 10 albums with his recording company, Sony Music. Her success began in 1990 and 1991 with the release of the two albums: Mariah Carey and Emotions. With Emotions, Mariah established the record of becoming the only artist to have her first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and she also received two Grammy Awards. Thereafter, she recorded MTV Unplugged, in which a majority of very famous anglophone artists take part. The broadcast was a success and an album was released from it, which sold with nearly ten million copies throughout the world. The following album, Music Box, made the pop singer known throughout the world. Among the singles were "Hero," "Dreamlover" and "Without You," which was sold the most in Europe and number one in many countries. The singer releases more albums: in 1994, Merry Christmas. The single "All I want for Christmas is you" is phenomenal success in Japan and the United States. The longetivity of this song is astonishing: in each Christmas, it is repeated played on radio stations throughout the world! In 1995, the album Daydream is released. It is also an enormous success: it reaches more than 20 million copies sold worldwide. Mariah releases a duet as a single for the first time, with Boyz II Men. The singles are "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day," "Open arms," "Underneath The Stars" and "Forever." In 2000, according to World Music Awards, Mariah Carey would be the largest selling artist of the decade 1990-2000, with 140 million albums. The release of the album Butterfly is still a success for the singer, with the sales of albums beating all the records. Then #1's and Rainbow followed.
In 2002, Mariah played a surprising role: the part of a woman gangster in the film Wise Girls which received critical acclaim. The film's actresses were greeted at the International Film Festival in Toronto, where the film was premiered. In 2005, the album The Emancipation Of Mimi, a nickname by which she has been called. It contained singles which were an immediate success and ensured a triumphant return for her as one of the pop legends.
In September 2011, Mariah went back to the studio to record a new album. She will premiere one or two of the songs at the time of the concert at closure of the Mawazine festival.
MariahDailyJournal will bring you further details as they become available.
Carey To Replace Scherzinger on X-Factor?
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 24-Jan-2012, 10:51AM EST
Call it a clash of the divas! Following a tumultuous first X Factor season, Nicole Scherzinger is rumored to be leaving ... And to have a pretty pricey replacement: None other than the best selling female artist of all time, Mariah Carey, may fill the Over 30s judge's designer shoes!
Sources have been whispering that because Scherzinger wasn't comfortable seeing contestants get eliminated, she wanted out. Once Mimi heard the news, she reportedly let Simon Cowell know she'd be willing to take Scherzy's place.
The move, while dramatic, would hardly be surprising. Scherzinger was rumored to have a potential country switch with U.K. X Factor judge Kelly Rowland, but it appears that may have fallen by the wayside as she focuses on other projects. In an interview in December, Scherzinger revealed that she was looking forward to finally finishing and releasing her long-delayed album, Killer Love, and that she wanted to focus on a burgeoning acting career as well.
Scherzinger's rumored emotional motives are also likely to play a role in the decision. The former Pussycat Doll faced massive backlash when her deadlock vote sent fan favorite Rachel Crow home. "I'm used to being on stage and performing and singing for people and people cheering for me," Scherzinger said. "I am an artist first, not a judge first! The elimination process for me has been very difficult."
For her part, Carey has always been welcome on X Factor -- but factors like weather, scheduling and cash kept her at bay. Cowell was determined to find a role for Carey on the series. When it was decided that she would be his guest during the judges' home auditions, Hurricane Irene nixed her travel plans. In December, Carey's request for a $300,00 payout to perform "All I Want for Christmas Is You" with teen phenom Justin Bieber was denied.
While we'll miss Scherzinger -- tears and all -- we'd love to see what advice and sass Mimi has up her sleeves!

Mariah: Jeweler Joan Boyce Is Not My Mother!
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 22-Jan-2012, 12:58PM EST
Mariah Carey may be mom to 8-month-old twins Moroccan and Monroe, but when it comes to her own mother, she's not down for any baby mama drama.
On January 12, Carey, whose husband, Nick Cannon, is currently recovering from minor kidney failure, hit up the store of famed jeweler and longtime friend, Joan Boyce. Soon after, some outlets began referring to Boyce's boutique as "Mariah's parents' jewelry store."
Shutting down those false speculations, both Boyce and Carey took to their twitter accounts to sound off.
"@MariahCarey M, congrats on BET Honors! Did you see they called me your mom again? It's so silly! You only have one mom and that's Pat Carey," Boyce tweeted at the singer on Friday.
"@joanboycehsn You'd think after she sang the duet with me last year & performed on my ABC Special in front of millions, people would get it!" the singer responded.
"I was extremely pregnant but here's a link to our moment together on stage 4 anyone who didn't see it. That's my momma!" Carey added, along with the video of her and her mom singing.
Pat, who's pictured with a pregnant Mariah carrying "dem babies" in the photo to the left, also appeared in a video for Mimi's holiday album, Merry Christmas II You in 2010.

Mariah Attends Spike Lee Fundraiser

Obama Receives Warm Reception at Spike Lee Fundraiser
Amid all the talk of a Hollywood boycott on fundraising for Barack Obama because of his SOPA position, the president was feted Thursday night at a $35,800-per-ticket fundraiser at director Spike Lee's New York City brownstone.
Among the 45 guests were Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon.
According to the pool report, Obama told the crowd: "Everybody in this room is going to be doing fine - but for children and grandchildren and future generations who are going to be able to proudly say that America continues to be the land of opportunity."
Although Lee has been critical of the president in the past, all seemed to be forgiven at the intimate gathering. Lee's wife, writer Tonya Lewis Lee, introduced the president to the crowd. "Another four years," she said. The president took the microphone to warm applause.
In his opening remarks, Obama recalled how he took Michelle to see Lee's movie Do the Right Thing on their first date, according to the pool report.
Lee quipped: "Good thing you didn't choose Driving Miss Daisy."
It's always a highlight of my week to read Chart Beat and see everyone's thoughts on what's happening in the Billboard world.
With all the talk of Katy Perry's records lately, it seems that many people have overlooked the end of another artist's record: Lady Gaga's.
Though I've learned to never say never when it comes to Billboard charts, I suspect that Gaga's latest single, "Marry the Night," will not reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. If so, "Night" will end Gaga's streak of 11 consecutive (radio-promoted) top 10 singles, stretching to Dec. 6, 2008, when "Just Dance," featuring Colby O'Donis, rocketed 17-6.
This led me to wonder which artist holds the Billboard record for the most initial consecutive top 10 Hot 100 singles. I bet it's one of the usual suspects - the Beatles, Mariah Carey, etc. - but perhaps another artist connected a string of hits unnoticed. I originally thought it would be Madonna, but alas, 1983's "Holiday" peaked at No. 16 before she strung together a Billboard-record 19 consecutive top 10 hits.
Thanks again, Gary! Looking forward to reading your column in 2012 and beyond!
Trevor Anderson Houston, Texas
Per your question, I'd have to agree that "Marry the Night" will likely fall short of the Hot 100's top 10. After reaching a peak of No. 29 four weeks ago, the song has since slipped 33-39-37-39.
More troublesome, despite roaring onto the Pop Songs radio airplay chart at No. 24 in December, "Marry" rose to No. 14 in its fourth week, held there for a second frame and has since fallen 15-16-16. With mainstream top 40 Gaga's home radio format, the song's regression there doesn't indicate that a Hot 100 rebound is likely.
Sales, too, have subsided, with "Marry" having peaked at No. 30 so far on the Digital Songs survey four weeks ago.
Why has "Marry" not become the fifth Hot 100 top 10 from "Born This Way"?
For one, fifth singles typically suffer from decreased buzz, since the initial excitement of a set's release has since worn off.
Pop radio also tends to value melody above all, and it's possible that "Marry" is, ultimately, more of a club groove than a top 40 natural. Perhaps it's similar to, for example, Madonna's "Keep It Together" or "Rescue Me," which peaked at Nos. 8 and 9 on the Hot 100 in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The songs were pop-centric enough to receive top 40 attention, but more dance in nature than previous such smashes as, for instance, "Material Girl" or "Like a Prayer." Or, for Gaga, "Poker Face" or "Bad Romance," each of which, it could be argued, boast more obvious, fully-crafted and unique hooks than "Marry."
Still, Gaga's career launch has been one of the most impressive in the 53-year history of the Hot 100.
And, you're partially right, Trevor: Mariah Carey holds the mark for career-opening most top 10 singles, although only among brand new artists. Counting acts that went solo after being in groups, as well, here's how the record book stacks up (holiday songs, charted album cuts not promoted to radio and featured turns excluded, unless they add to the streak):
Career-Opening Top 10s, Artist, Span 13, Lionel Richie (post-Commodores; 1981-87) 12, George Michael (during/post-Wham!; 1985-90) 11, Mariah Carey (1990-94) 11, Lady Gaga (2008-11) 9, New Kids on the Block (1988-90) 8, Bruno Mars (2010-12; still-active streak) 7, Air Supply (1980-82) 7, Taylor Dayne (1988-90) 7, Expose (1987-90) 7, Gary Lewis and the Playboys (1965-66) 7, Ke$ha (2009-11) 7, the Lovin' Spoonful (1965-67) 7, Richard Marx (1987-89) 7, Monica (1995-99) 7, Ricky Nelson (1958-59)
(The Beatles, by the way, stopped short of the top 10 after three titles, as "I Saw Her Standing There" peaked at No. 14 amid the glut of their songs' availability upon the onslaught of early Beatlemania).
While Gaga's streak appears to have ended, we shouldn't overlook that she's tied Mariah Carey for the most Hot 100 top 10s among solo artists who didn't first became well-known in groups (i.e., Richie, Michael). "Anytime You Need a Friend" was Carey's "Marry," having stopped at No. 12 in 1994. Like the dance lean of "Marry," "Friend" may have been a bit too gospel/adult R&B for mainstream pop audiences. The ballad was also the fourth single from Carey's album "Music Box," so artist and album burn may have factored in.
Most notably for Gaga, her run of hits signifies more than just a collection of songs; she started a movement. Her sound ignited dance music to new heights of mainstream popularity, paving, in part, acceptance for such acts as David Guetta to become current pop music cornerstones.
And, considering Gaga's status as one of music's most recognizable superstars, like most chart records, big-picture-wise, the potential end of her career-starting top 10 streak shouldn't hurt her overall momentum. Her next new studio album release is certain to elicit event status, with a return to the Hot 100's top 10 for a sure-to-be strong first single a good bet.
MDJ Note: All but three of Mariah's first eleven singles reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. They were: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday," "I Don't Wanna Cry," "Emotions, "Can't Let Go" (#2), "Make It Happen" (#5), "I'll Be There," "Dreamlover," "Hero" and "Without You" (#3). After "Anytime You Need A Friend," Mariah went on to have six more consecutive top 10 hits, until "When You Believe" broke the streak again in 1998, peaking at #15.
Overall: Out of Mariah's first 22 singles to chart on the Hot 100, 20 were top 10.
Nick Cannon Praises "Hero" Mariah Carey
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 16-Jan-2012, 12:57PM EST
Just over a week after being hospitalized for "mild kidney failure," Nick Cannon stepped out for the first time with wife Mariah Carey -- and praised her for being his "hero" during the ordeal.
"When times are hard, you guys don't see her at 3 o'clock in the morning, getting up in the middle of the night, fixing me soup when my kidneys ain't acting right. Mariah Carey does that," Cannon, 31, said onstage before presenting his wife with the Entertainer Award at the 2012 BET Honors taping, held Saturday in Washington, D.C. The show will air Feb. 13 at 9 p.m.
Holding 8-month-old son Moroccan -- dressed in a matching mini tux -- Cannon gushed over Carey and at times appeared emotional as he reflected on the woman he calls "my angel."
"It is truly, truly a blessing to be here tonight, and I am humbled and in awe of everyone's presence, but mostly my hero right there," he said as Carey, 42, looked on from the front row.
"What most people don't get the opportunity to experience is the true woman; the virtuous person who is my angel."
A teary-eyed Carey soon returned the adoration, thanking God for having her husband and baby by her side.
"To my incredible husband who [has been] out of the hospital two days -- look at him all strong and healthy and big and too buff for the tux -- it's incredible," she beamed.
On the mend, Cannon even did an impromptu performance: beatboxing for his son.
"This is what makes Roc the most happy," said Carey, dressed in a form-fitting black and nude-colored gown. "And Miss Monroe Cannon's backstage, darling. We were both sewn into our dresses, so she couldn't make it out."
More from the 2012 BET Honors
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 15-Jan-2012, 3:45PM EST
T.Y. attended the BET Honors last night in Washington, D.C., and was kind enough to share his experience and some photos with us:
"I was privileged enough to attend the BET Honors last night here in DC and it was great! Got to rub elbows with tons of folks and I must say Mariah and Nick looked phenomenal! They were one of the last to arrive in the venue (Mariah on time?! Hell no! lmao)! Security was verrrrryyy tight, as they had cross streets around 3\4ths of the venue completely blocked off to car and foot traffic unless you arrived in a chauffeured SUV or vehicle like we did. All of F street between 12th and 11th streets were blocked. The show started a little late and ran about an hour late due to re taping some things with the incomparable Stevie Wonder! I also attended the after party at The Portrait Gallery a few blocks away, where most of the honorees were in attendance as well as other celebs who skipped the carpet to go into the venue at The Warner! Plus DC is freezing right now! Lol I took a few pics but due to privacy I will only post a few on my personal FB page but I will send you guys a pic I snapped, after the show let out, of the VERY well made program that we all received upon entrance! I'm glad that BET has finally given Mariah her props. They were long over due! Kelly was great but no one can sing Mariahs' songs better than she can! Never have and Never will! All in all everyone in attendance had a great fun and classy night!"
As you see in the photos, the program was beautifully constructed and includes the following write-up about Mariah:
We are immensely proud to confer among Mariah Carey the Entertainer BET Honor. With an astounding 200 million career albums sold, 18 #1 Hits on the Billboard Hot 100 (more than Elvis Presley), and 5 Grammy Awards, this incomparable singer-songwriter, producer, performer, actor, philanthropist and mother of twins continues her journey as one of the most influential superstars in the world.
Born in Long Island, New York, Carey moved to New York City at the age of seventeen to pursue a music career, just one day after graduating high school. Her big break came as a backing vocalist in a studio session with dance-pop singer Brenda K. Starr, who handed Carey's demo tape to then Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola at a party. According to legend, Mottola listened to the tape in his limousine while driving home that same evening, and was so struck by her talent that he doubled back to the party to track her down. After signing to Columbia, she released Mariah Carey, her 1990 debut. The album was a chart-topping smash, with 2 GRAMMY wins and four number one singles. Her latest project, Merry Christmas II You, is Mariah Carey's 13th studio album. It follows her worldwide multi-million selling Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel (2009).
Her dramatic turns in Tennessee and Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire lensed by Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels and earned her critical acclaim. Fresh Air named their youth career awareness summer program Camp Mariah after Carey, who has championed the organization since 1994. We can't wait to see what records she breaks next.
Below is a news clip about the show. You can see footage of Mariah, as well as a brief interview with Kelly Rowland, where she talks about performing in tribute to Mariah: "The fact that I'm honoring Mariah- I so love and respect her so much. I have to look at her forehead, when I'm singing, and not her eyes, I already know. Because I know I'm gonna break out in tears!"
Just a couple of hours ago, Mariah tweeted to Kelly Rowland, Patti Labelle, and Raekwon, who all performed in her honor last night:
@KELLYROWLAND: Dear Kelly, thank you so much for the a+++mazing tribute at the BET honors last night ... I can't wait for your fans to see how great you were. You've no idea how much I appreciate you. x0x0"
@Raekwon: Much love, respect & thanks to you for coming out at the BET honors. Wu forever. RIP O.D.B. God bless, LYM, Mariah.
@MsPattiPatti: Dear Godmother, I was in tears from the moment you stepped on the stage last night... Thank you for being you, an icon for the entire world to treasure. Love forever, MC."

Several hours ago, makeup artist Kristofer Buckle tweeted en route to Washington, DC, where Mariah will attend the BET Honors tonight: "on my way to DC for MC for BET."
The Serbian magazine Story recently featured photos of Mariah, Nick, and their twins Moroccan and Monroe out and about in Aspen:
Magic Winter with Family
Since they were born nine months ago, twins, Morrocan and Monroe, children of afamous singer Mariah Carey(41) and her husband Nick Cannon(30,) have been followed by the papparazzi, by the day. Together with their famous parents, the adorable toddlers have visited elite Aspen in Colorado, where they enjoyed winter wonderland. The moment they showed up on the streets, they were in the limelight of the passers-by, but in contrast to other stars, they happily posed rather then seeming to be bothered.
Music Box was recently re-released in high-definition remastered format (K2-HD mastering) in some Asian markets. Lucas sent in some scans of his purchase:
Glee star Darren Criss was interviewed in the February 2012 issue of Details magazine and talked about being introduced to Mariah as a surreal moment in his career so far:
DETAILS: Has there been a most surreal moment during your meteoric rise?
Darren Criss: It was at Prince Azim of Brunei's birthday party in the middle of the English countryside. He's a fan of Glee. I never thought I would meet Mariah Carey, but I really never thought I'd be introduced to her by Whitney Houston. She's like, "Hey, baby, this is Mariah." I'm like, "I know. I'm Darren. I don't know what I'm doing here."
Nicole Ritchie tweeted a shout-out to one of her favorite Mariah songs:
If you don't like the Mariah Carey & 98 degrees song "Thank God I Found You", I don't think we can be friends
Kevin Writer to Produce on Next Mariah Album
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 13-Jan-2012, 12:10PM EST
Music producer Kevin Writer, formerly of R&B group RydazNrtisT, who opened for Mariah's 2010 Angels Advocate Tour, recently spoke with Erica Sharlette Promotions, a UK-based marketing blog. Writer talked about opening for Mariah and revealed that he will soon begin work with her on her next studio album!
ESP: "You mention a memorable moment during the track 'I Got U'. Flashback to the 'Angels Advocate' Tour, 2010. You're opening for one Ms. Mariah Carey, and about 30 rows back, you see a group of fans singing every song in your set, word for word. What was that experience like for you?"
KW: "Madison Square Garden on New Year's Eve...that was my biggest show to date and an experience I will never forget, for so many reasons but specifically, for those fans. 11,000 people plus...It was pretty hard to see from up there, but somehow I could see them! We got to go down and take pictures with them after Mariah's set, talk to them and just enjoy that interaction - it was incredible. After such an unbelievable set, to get that love and talk to them directly? The whole thing just left me so truly humbled and thankful."
ESP: "I can't not talk to you about your projects because I know you have some amazing stuff coming up. Can you tell me what you are working on? What should the UK be looking out for, from you?"
KW: "...I guess the most immediate thing though, would be that I start working with Mariah on her new album, next week."

JASMINE AND MARIAH
Christmas wouldn’t be the same if I didn’t spend it with my Christmas family, Mr and Mrs Cannon (Mariah and Nick) and their extended family annually in Aspen. This year was as wonderful as past years where we attend Midnight Mass, ride horse sleighs through the snow, take the dogs (JJ, Cha Cha Jill E Beans and crew) for their snowy walks, go to the top of mountains and watch as skiers and snowboarders do their thing, visit Joan Boyce’s diamond store, eat Mariah’s delicious home cooked treats and decorate the Christmas tree!

Mariah & Nick "Closer Than Ever" After Illness
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 11-Jan-2012, 6:57AM EST
Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey really do love each other in sickness and in health!
The America's Got Talent host's father, James Cannon, told Us Weekly Tuesday that Nick's recent hospitalization for mild kidney failure only strengthened his son's relationship with Carey.
"Nick and Mariah have a very strong bond," James said. "If anything, this unexpected illness has made them closer than ever and appreciate one another even more."
"She would stay in the hospital overnight to support him," James, author of The Calling -- How to Discover Your Calling in Three Days, told Us. "Nick and Mariah are really good for one another -- they have so much in common and can make the other one laugh. So they managed to cope even though Nick was pretty sick. But he is glad to be home now and his whole family is pleased about that also."
Although resting up in the hospital was difficult for the active 31-year-old, Nick's father said that "at the same time, he loved being the center of attention too when people visited him."
The great thing about my son is that he always tries to stay upbeat," James gushed. "He took his mind off things by joking with the nurses and doctors and things like that."
As for the couple's 8-month-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe? "They are absolutely beautiful babies," James told Us. "They are both doing great and they are a total mix of their parents. They both share Nick and Mariah's spirit and energy levels. They are beautiful and it is a joy and blessing to see them change and grow constantly."
Fortunately, Nick was released from an L.A. hospital Monday, and according to his dad is "doing well."
"The doctors have ordered him to rest and make some adjustments to his diet too," James added. "It has been an educational process for him, and he is determined to make those changes and stay away from soft drinks and too many sugar-based foods now."
Nick is expected to return to his morning radio show, Rollin' With Nick Cannon, on January 17.

Nick Cannon "Getting Better" After Surgery
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 09-Jan-2012, 6:23PM EST
Nick Cannon is showing some improvement after his surgery for mild kidney failure on Friday.
The America's Got Talent host, 31, has been recovering in a Los Angeles hospital since being transferred from a medical facility in Aspen. Colo., where he spent the holidays with wife Mariah Carey and their eight-month-old twins Moroccan and Monroe.
"Nick is getting better+we love+appreciate all the ongoing kind words!" Carey, 41, wrote on Twitter Sunday.
Cannon took to the social networking site the previous day, writing, "Recovering... about to be stronger than ever!"
Neither of the two has disclosed what kind of surgery Cannon had. Dr. Manny Alvarez, who has not treated the star, told Fox News there is no such thing as "mild" kidney failure. Instead, he explained that Cannon most likely suffered from acute kidney failure, which occurs when the kidneys fail to remove waste from the body.
Severe dehydration, infection, side effects or toxicity from medications, severe bleeding and auto-immune diseases such as lupus are among the factors that can contribute to kidney failure, said Alvarez.
Carey, who has been by Cannon's bedside since he was first hospitalized Jan. 4, recently told fans that her eternally optimistic husband would likely be back on his feet soon.
"Nick is in stable condition with a good prognosis, hopefully he'll be discharged within 2 days," she tweeted Friday. "As always he's laughing and in good spirits."

Mariah and husband Nick Cannon checked out of Aspen Valley Hospital to rush back to Los Angeles and head to Cedar Sinai Hospital on January 4, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Nick looked to be in a good deal of pain as the two of them made their way off the plane. Mariah and Nick seemed to be in good spirits as they arrived at the hospital and greeted some waiting friends while Nick was put in a wheelchair and rushed inside.
Message From Mariah Regarding Nick
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 04-Jan-2012, 5:43PM EST
This is us in the hospital - role reversal; Last year it was me attached to the machines (after having dembabies) and Nick was there with me through it, and now here we are.
We're trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful. They tried to kick me out of the hospital but here I am pon de bed with Mr. C.
We're doing OK but we're "straaaaaanded in Aspen". #DramaticDivaPlace (I know, we could be in a lot worse places) but the truth is as long as we're together, we're OK. I'm not trying to make light out of the situation because it's a serious moment that's very tough on all of us so please keep us and our family in your prayers. LYM.
