Lost in Music: Mariah Carey MTV Unplugged
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 31-Oct-2012, 1:23PM EDT
Mariah Carey's talent is often over-shadowed by her diva reputation. Ben Kelly reflects on her finest musical moment – MTV Unplugged.
The music world has no shortage of great live rock albums, but great live pop albums are few and far between. Reliant on dancing and backing tracks, pop shows usually don't carry well outside the performance space. It took a carefully constructed live session on MTV Unplugged – a series actually set up for acoustic rock shows – to produce what I think is a perfect live pop album.
Since the release of her self titled début album in 1990, and her sophomore release Emotions in 1991, Mariah Carey was under fire for her lack of live performances. She'd done TV shows, but never toured. Critics began to suggest that "the voice" was a studio creation – reliant on mixing and auto tune to create the gravity defying notes. So, to quash the rumours, her management booked her an MTV Unplugged session. With just 7 songs and clocking in at a mere 28 minutes in length, it's officially an EP and it's largely been forgotten about, but it's quite possibly her finest work.
Aside from the fact that the dress code was clearly "anything black,"(leather and sequins both feature heavily), the musical outfit is wonderful. Backed by ten gospel singers and a tight pop-blues band (including legendary Randy Jackson on bass), she kicks off in style with one of her best tracks, "Emotions." It starts like a vocal warm up, but it's not long before the famous whistle register is out in full force. This is a rare vocal ability, often unheard of outside of opera. It's a hugely impressive gift, and Mariah handles it with great technical care. It has since become her trademark, but here she only uses it a handful of times, and to rapturous applause. A strong saxophone section makes for a special performance of "If It's Over," written by Carey and one of her heroes, Carole King. "Someday" and "Make It Happen" are both up-tempo soulful numbers with some great solos from the band. The use of the backing singers in an intimate environment give everything a gospel edge, like it’s some sort of pop Baptist church. You'll have to resist the temptation to point your finger and shout 'testify!'during "Make It Happen." Her debut single, "Vision Of Love," is a well-received highlight, largely because this was a song specially crafted to show off her voice and all its tricks. It’s a pop masterpiece, with clever chord movements, a simple but catchy chorus, and a great call and response section, which Carey sang with herself in the original (you’ll have to settle for backing singer Trey Lorenz here). Her rendition of the Jackson 5′s "I'll Be There" is the album's shining moment. A last minute addition to the set, it has become one of her signature songs, even performed by her at Michael Jackson's memorial service.
Mariah once said that as a perfectionist, "I tend to nitpick everything I do" and that MTV Unplugged taught her "the raw stuff is usually better." This format may be raw, but you'll be hard pushed to find a single vocal imperfection. More than just a master class in female pop vocals, this record is a blueprint for the careers of women like Christina Aguilera and Jessie J. Yes, warbling may be frowned upon now as over done, but here Mariah is bringing it to the table for the first time in her own unique way, and gets it just right.
In 1996, Mariah divorced her restrictive husband and Sony boss, Tommy Mottola, (the emancipation of Mimi, if you will). At that point, Mariah the Diva was born. But before that, she was a girl who seemed young for her age, unsure of herself and her talents, modest, and wholly concerned with giving a great musical performance. The display of this long lost personality is one of the things that makes this record even more striking. She's slightly embarrassed and giggly when accepting applause and agreeing to an encore – and when thanking the audience for coming she sounds genuinely grateful and humble. It's a different Mariah, and for many people it's one they’d much prefer: incredible vocals, with none of the outlandish behaviour. This is a pure Mariah Carey, not just unplugged in the musical sense, but stripped down to the basics that made her a star, and secured her voice as one of the greatest of all time. Sadly, time has taken its toll on her iconic voice, but here, in a charming show filmed in a small New York theatre in 1992, her unique talent was captured perfectly in all its glory. Take a half hour and give it the listen it deserves.

Several stars have lended their names (and nails) to OPI, but Mariah Carey is the first to collaborate with the beauty brand on its new Liquid Sand formula.
"OPI is extremely excited to work with Mariah," OPI Executive VP Suzi Weiss-Fischmann says in a release. "She's very passionate about beauty and her nails in particular. The superstar hand-selected four of the OPI Liquid Sand lacquers, the company's latest innovation in nail art, which dry to a textured, "pebbled" finish that features a bit of sparkle.

Update on "Happy Lamboween" Tweet Day
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 30-Oct-2012, 10:23AM EDT
Please see below for an update from Pauly and Chris regarding the "Happy Lamboween" Tweet Day, which was previously announced several days ago:
Lambs, due to the impact from Hurricane Sandy and out of respect to the people in America, we have decided to cancel our "Happy Lamboween" event. It will go ahead next year!
But let's turn this negative energy into something uplifting and tweet "Stay Triumphant USA" instead, for all the victims suffering right now! Knowing that people all across the world do care can help in some way. We can link Mariah's ultimate anthem "Hero" (new version) for this special occasion. I always like to think the lambs across the world are there for eachother with this being no exception.
So c'mon everyone, spread the word and Tweet "Stay Triumphant USA" on Halloween out of respect to the USA.

Fan Review: Mariah in Macau
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 30-Oct-2012, 9:45AM EDT
On October 10, 2012, Mariah performed at a private concert at Venetian Macau Resort Hotel's Cotai Arena. Her performance was part of the Heckel Achievement Rally 2012.
Pips was at the concert, and was kind enough to share her experience, including the details of Mariah's full setlist, as well as some photos from the event! See below:
SETLIST 01. Daydream Interlude 02. It's Like That 03. Touch My Body 04. My All/Remix 05. Ad-lib (Changing) (Costume Change) 06. Happy birthday to Nakajima 07. I Still Believe 08. Rock With You (Trey Lorenz) 09. Love Hangover/Heartbreaker 10. Shake It Off 11. Always Be My Baby 12. Hero (Encore) 13. We Belong Together
REVIEW I was fortunately to be invited to the concert thrown to celebrate the 60th birthday of Kaoru Nakajima, the founder of Heckel - one of Amway Japan's top agencies. The concert started promptly shortly after 4pm, at the Venetian Cotai Arena in Macau. Mariah looked stunning and sounded impeccable despite catching a slight cold on the way to Macau. And yes, the concert was entirely live and her vocals were absolutely gorgeous - point on. You could really tell she was enjoying hearing the sounds she was emitting and feeling the music.
Randy and most of the crew were there with her backstage at a photo-op for Nakajima and a few of his VIPs. Mariah was gracious and classy as always, and held her patience very well - despite being exhausted with a cold and having performed after a long-haul flight. My husband Chris and I were last in line for the photos. Being "Mariah's Lamby" for this long (some of you fellow lambs know this fact well), and this being the first time for me to have a photo opportunity with her; needless to say, I was both over the moon and terrified at the same time as the line got shorter and shorter. There was a bit of a delay when the ever-so-enthusiastic Mr. Nakajima misunderstood cues to end his photo session with Mariah; but alas, it was my turn. With Chris (my husband) as my pillar and a huge goober plastered on my face, I mustered up just enough breath to say hi to Mariah and muttered my name. Talk about a sweet, sweet fantasy! A heartfelt 'thank you' to Mr. Nakajima for having his birthday at just the right time, being a fantastic salesman, and having awesome taste. Special thanks to my good friend who made this all happen - y'know who you are - appreciate, enjoy, and love ya as always!

Mariah Tops VH1's 75 Sexiest Halloween Costumes
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 25-Oct-2012, 12:51PM EDT
Halloween is almost here, and it's definitely not just for kids anymore! These days it's less about the mini candy bars and more about the seriously hot mini outfits. October 31st has become the unofficial the last gasp of bikini season, the final strip-off before winter sets in and everyone turns into Slanket mummies for 6 months. But for now, the goal is to be the most creative with the least amount of clothing. And no one does that better than Hollywood A-listers! These stars have brought us some truly awesome costumes over the years. Who could forget Kim Kardashian as Jasmine, Mariah Carey as a scantily clad bride(?) and Snooki as... the Queen of the Pickles? We think? Okay, we'll be honest: we don't know what a lot of these outfits are supposed to be. But that's the magic of Halloween: We don’t have to! It's the one night of the year where it's not skanky, it's a costume!
"Happy Lamboween" Twitter Event
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 25-Oct-2012, 8:51AM EDT
It's come to that festive time of year lambs. To coincide with what is considered an Anti-Bleak occasion for The Carey/Cannon's we saw it fit to create an inaugural Happy Lamboween event for the lambs across the globe.
Our mission is to give back a bit to Mariah who has done so much for the lambs. It would be very special to see Happy Lamboween and Mariah Carey simultaneously trend but we're going to need a lot of lamb presence for this to succeed!
So come October 31st Halloween, the lambs all over the world can partake in the fun and tweet "Happy Lamboween" with either a festive pic of themselves or a message to Mariah! Remember to include Mariah Carey in your response.
Happy Lamboween will not include a (#) Hashtag to make it as simple as possible.
New Zealand, Australia, South Africa & Asia will kick it off followed by the rest of the lambily world. It's important for the initial countries to continue to tweet right up until November 1st when the USA, Europe and UK will celebrate the event!
Props to Pauly from Global Mariah Fans for the wonderful pic and Christopher@Lambpa for initiating it. We will endevour to send out reminders prior to the event.
Mariah Carey Spends $1500 on 8-Hour Massage
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 24-Oct-2012, 7:11PM EDT
Ambien? A white-noise machine?
That's kid stuff for a sleepy Mariah Carey.
The American Idol diva arranged an eight-hour rub-down while she got shut-eye at her L.A. mansion September 29.
"The masseuse made $1,500," a source tells Us Weekly. On top of that, Carey had a seriously kooky request.
"She insisted [Sacha Baron Cohen's] Bruno play on repeat," the insider adds. "It looped the entire time!"
Carey's elaborate massage may have been necessary in order to relieve the tension she's built up dealing with Nicki Minaj on the set of American Idol. The two women are embroiled in an ongoing feud after Minaj launched into a profane taped rant against the Grammy winner during auditions in Charlotte, N.C.
Still, an insider tells Us show execs "love the drama. They feel like they've struck gold."

Nick Cannon Shows Candy Room & Talks Idol
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 24-Oct-2012, 8:01AM EDT
Nick Cannon might be a husband and father, but he's still a kid at heart... as evidenced by the candy room he installed in the home he shares with Mariah Carey and their 1-year-old twins, Roc and Roe. Nick recently gave us a private tour of the sugary lounge, which is fully stocked with Wonka treats like Nerds and Fun Dip, as well as jars of butterfly-shaped lollipops in Mariah's honor. Nick said the shrine to sweets was partly inspired by his recent health scare, which prompted him to focus on fun. He also gave us his prediction on what kind of American Idol judge Mariah will be and talked about the song he inspired on her upcoming album. Check out our video for a sneak peek inside Nick and Mariah's digs and for more from our interview with Nick!

Mariah Tops The Lava Lizard's Top 10 R&B Albums List
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 20-Oct-2012, 10:39PM EDT
Earlier today, urban/pop entertainment news site The Lava Lizard counted down the 10 Greatest R&B albums of the past 10 years. The Emancipation of Mimi sits proudly at the top of the list. Here is some of what site owner Trent had to say about the album that brought us 2000-2010's Song of the Decade "We Belong Together."
Without attempting to recreate her past works, Carey unleashed the full force of her range on "Mimi" with a glorious combination of R&B, Soul, Funk and Gospel. Best of all, she was being herself without trying to fit in with the younger generation of competing artists.
To read the rest of the write-up, and view the other albums that made the list, check out the original post at The Lava Lizard!
Radio Personality Recalls Meeting Mariah
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 20-Oct-2012, 10:32PM EDT
Television host and radio personality Tom Sullivan recently shared his story of meeting Mariah in Atlanta, GA at a promotional event for her debut album:
It was an early spring evening in 1990 and Columbia records was rolling out the red carpet to celebrate their newest artist, Mariah Carey. The exclusive party was held at Carbo’s Cafe Upstairs. Open bar with top shelf liquors and a smorgasbord of food all entertained the crowd until the curtain opened and an introduction of Mariah. Dressed in her signature black body fitting dress, she stood on stage with a couple of backup singers and a piano. She began with her smash "Vision of Love" and at that moment I was taken with that incredible sultry, smooth voice as it touched on all 5 octaves which led to the first of many standing ovations. I remember walking up to her in my Z Cavaricci pants and Gerbeau dress shirt feeling so cool and posing for the picture taken by Atlanta's own Rick Diamond. I don't know who had bigger hair, me or Mariah! Even a little chest hair showing! We could have gone out on the town. (We did in my dreams) I thanked her for taking time to perform for us and sign autographs because I knew she was going to be so big that I'd never get the chance to meet her again. (I did about 10 years later at a Star 94 interview with Steve and Vikki.) The rest is history. So Thank You Mariah for that great moment. Just one of many I experienced during my time at Star 94/WQXI radio.
Mariah Collaborates With Hit Boy & James Fauntleroy
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 20-Oct-2012, 2:27PM EDT
Grammy nominated hip-hop, R&B and contemporary music producer/rapper Hit Boy (Chauncey Hollis) and Mariah tweeted to each other early this morning. There were not many details revealed, but it is clear the two were in the studio together:
Hit-Boy @Hit_Boy If i was in the studio with one of the biggest selling artists of all time and had a bottle of honey jack daniels on the way.. oh that's now
MC HB JF
Nobody got this range. Maxing out.
Shortly thereafter, Mariah replied to Hit Boy by saying simply "@Hit_Boy: MC HB JF” :)"
"JF" referenced in these tweets is believed to be R&B singer/songwriter James Fauntleroy, who retweeted HitBoy's second tweet. Fauntleroy has an impressive catalogue of songs, having previously worked with artists such as Chris Brown, Rhianna, Brandy, Kelly Clarkson and David Archuleta.

Queen of Comebacks Is she a self-indulgent diva or a brave woman who keeps on fighting, no matter the odds? Discover the secrets of Mariah Carey, pop's most complex star. By Madeline Lin
Mariah Carey's latest single is entitled "Triumphant." And no wonder. At 42, she has gorgeous 19-month-old twins, a loving husband and a US$18-million dollar contract as a new judge on the TV hit talent show American Idol.
But amid the dreams, there is also plenty of drama. In January this year, Mariah shared photos of her in Aspen with her husband Nick Cannon, a TV and radio host. They proudly carried their twins - nicknamed "Roc and Roe" - and tweeted pictures of the family in matching designer ski outfits.
But just a few days later, Nick was rushed to hospital - it turned out he had kidney failure. In February, he collapsed again due to blood clots in his lungs. This time, the photos were not so happy - they showed Mariah sitting anxiously by Nick's bedside.
Aged just 31, Nick has been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. He has had to quit his daily radio show, but says his condition is under control. No doubt to thank Mariah for her support, he whisked her off to Paris to re-pledge their marriage vows in April this year.
This time, the pictures show Nick on bended knee, presenting Mariah with a diamond big enough to rival the lights of the Eiffel Tower glinting behind her. Dressed in matching white outfits, the couple looked like rock royalty in a glam world where money is no object.
Misunderstood? You can say all this glamour (and drama) is fitting for a woman who is known as the ultimate self-indulgent diva. Before concerts, she has demanded such perks as "a basket of puppies" and "no furniture with patterns." She even has a helper to walk backwards in front of her - in case she trips in her high heels.
No one can say it's normal... but before we judge her, her past may be telling. Born to an Irish-American mother and an Afro-Venezuelan father, Mariah has had a tough childhood. By age four, she went to sleep with loud music in her headphones to drown out her parents' fighting. "There was always tension. They fought all the time," she says.
"I write these songs about feeling different and alienated because I grew up bi-racial, not feeling like I belonged, and not having any money.
"I started writing poetry when I was six. One teacher didn't believe the poems were mine because they were so dark and sad. But I wrote about what I experienced in my childhood."
After her parents' divorce, Mariah's older sister went to live with their father, leaving Mariah and her brother with their mother, a struggling opera singer. Money was in short supply. So Mariah became a back-up singer, attending school during the day and working in recording studios and bars at night.
But her family problems were far from over. At age 15, Mariah's older sister became pregnant, drifted into prostitution, then became addicted to drugs and alcohol. By 1994, her problems were so severe Mariah and her mother went to court to gain custody of Alison's two children.
Mariah's eldest nephew Sean is grateful. Now an Ivy League law school student, he says "Mariah became the caretaker of our family at an extremely young age. Without her, I don't know where I'd be."
Role Model Sadly, Mariah's first marriage repeated her parents' doomed pattern. At age 23, she wed Tommy Mottola, the boss of her record company, but says she was trapped in an "emotionally abusive" marriage. Tommy apparently monitored her every move and ordered staff not to look her in the eye to intimidate her. Says Mariah, "I longed for someone to kidnap me. I used to fantasise about it."
When she finally divorced four years later at 27, Mariah sang about being "free as a butterfly."
But perhaps the stress caught up. Mariah began acting more and more oddly, smashing items in hotel rooms and performing a striptease on live TV. She was hospitalised with "a physical and emotional breakdown," and her contract was bought out for US$50 million (accompanied by humiliating sighs of relief from studio executives). Insiders said her career was over.
Back On Track But it turned out that a good rest was all she needed. Mariah's next three albums were massive hits and in 2008, she finally got lucky in love when she met Nick on a video shoot.
Three years later, her twins Moroccan Scott (a boy) and Monroe (a girl) were born - and only after Mariah had endured a miscarriage.
Even today, the dramas are not over. Mariah's sister Alison, who is now HIV-positive, has resurfaced, using the media to beg Mariah for "a glimpse of her nephew and niece." Last year, she was reported to work as an "adult escort" charging US$250 for "erotic body rubs." So far, there is no news from Mariah about this possible family reconciliation.
Complicated and demanding? Yes, that's Mariah. But she is also just a woman who has had defeat, setbacks and hurts just like any woman.
Her saving grace is that she acknowledges that she is imperfect.
"I'm not vain, I'm insecure," she once said. Mariah also knows the most important thing - you have to make the most of your life, and keep coming back.
She jokes, "There is light at the end of the tunnel... hopefully it's not a train coming towards you!"
THE SLENDERISATION OF MIMI Mariah gained 32 kg carrying her twins, but jokes, "In photos, it looks like 4,000 kg! So I have empathy with people who have to lose weight." Post baby, it's considered safe to lose one kilo a week, or up to five kilos a month. But check with your doctor first - especially after a C-section.
1. DE-BLOAT Mariah claims 18 kg worth of her baby weight was due to water retention. Combat bloating by eating a low-salt diet, elevate your legs when possible and drink lots of fluids to flush toxins out. Go for water-rich fruits and greens, like watermelon and cucumber.
2. BE A WATER BABY Mariah loves swimming, which gives your body an overall workout. To tone up, Mariah also did underwater leg lifts, arm circles and squats.
3. GET OUT Mariah's been snapped taking her Jack Russell dogs for walks in the park. Walking is a great way to stay active, and connecting with a pet boosts positive feelings and gets you out of the house.
4. EAT IT! Mariah followed a diet from US weight-loss company Jenny Craig. She ate three small meals plus two snacks per day, or 1,200 to 2,500 calories a day. Her meals were 50 per cent carbohydrates, 25 per cent protein, and 25 per cent fat, like a tuna wholemeal sandwich.
5. LOOK FOR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT One of Jenny Craig's strongest points is 24/7 support available to encourage healthy eating and exercising. Similarly, look for a workout buddy to amp up your weight loss bid and make going to the gym more fun. Sharing your plans with family members can prevent them from bringing home sinful morsels that add inches to your waistline!

President Obama: "I think that they are going to be able to sort it out. I am confident. I am all about bringing people together, working for the same cause. So, I think both outstanding artists are going to be able to make sure that, you know, they're moving forward and not going backwards. Mariah, she's actually done some events for us. The new "American Idol" judge shows contestants how it's done, as the song, aided by remixes of the original version, leaps 2-1 on the survey to be released on Billboard.com next Thursday (Oct. 18). It's her first leader since "Obsessed" topped the tally the week of Oct. 3, 2009.
With 16 No. 1s, Carey ties Kristine W for fifth-place among artists with the most leaders in the list's 36-year history. Madonna leads with 43 No. 1s, followed by Janet Jackson (19) and Beyonce and Rihanna (18 each). (On the overall Billboard Hot 100, Carey has banked 18 No. 1s, the most among women and the second-most among all artists after the Beatles' 20.)
Here is a recap of Carey's sweet 16 Dance/Club Play Songs No. 1s:

Mariah Nets 16th #1 on Dance/Club Play Songs Chart
Posted by Angie on Friday, 12-Oct-2012, 12:20PM EDT
MARIAH CAREY NETS HER 16th #1 DANCE HIT WITH LATEST SINGLE, "TRIUMPHANT (GET 'EM),"
ONCE AGAIN CONTINUING TO LEAD ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF NEW MUSIC
Multi-platinum global superstar Mariah Carey notches her Sweet 16th #1 hit on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart with her latest single, "Triumphant (Get 'Em)." Mariah's previous #1 hits on the Billboard Dance chart include "Dreamlover," "Fantasy," "Honey," "We Belong Together," "Don't Forget About Us," "Touch My Body," and "Obsessed."
"This is another tremendous achievement for Mariah," said Steve Bartels, President & COO, Island Def Jam Music Group. "As one of the world's reigning artists, she continues to set chart records and surpass even her own record-breaking accomplishments. Congratulations to Mariah and to the IDJ staff that worked to bring home this incredible club sensation."
Mariah, who will join the judges' panel of FOX's American Idol when the series returns in 2013, boasts an unparalleled music catalog with #1 hits in multiple formats on the Billboard charts. The original version of "Triumphant (Get Em)" feat. Rick Ross and Meek Mill was followed-up with the "Pulse Club Remix" and the "Vintage Throwback Mix," as well as four additional remixes by Laidback Luke, Chus and Ceballos, Danny Verde, and Papercha$er. "I've always had so much fun re-singing my songs for the club/dance mixes," said Mariah. "It gives me the freedom to sing as powerfully as I want and to rewrite the songs specifically for the genre."
"Triumphant (Get 'Em)" is the first advance single from five-time Grammy Award®-winner Mariah's 14th studio album, whose release will be announced in the months ahead. The new album follows up Mariah's worldwide multi-million-selling Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel (released September 2009), her multi-platinum E=MC² (2008), and worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005).
The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's.
Three years later, Mariah surpassed Elvis when "Touch My Body" (from E=MC²) became her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit. "Touch My Body" spent two weeks at the top, Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated by Billboard. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. The success of E=MC² brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 200 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history.
With a distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting and producing talent, Mariah has defined the modern pop performance. As a singer/songwriter/producer, she has been honored with five Grammy Awards®, nine American Music Awards, Billboard's Artist of the Decade Award, the World Music Award for World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium, and BMI's Icon Award, to name a few.
She has two consecutive and unparalleled Billboard Song of the Decade titles: "One Sweet Day" (with Boyz II Men, 1995); and "We Belong Together" (2005), further marking her massive presence on the charts since her 1990 song debut "Vision of Love." Mariah's original holiday classic, "All I Want For Christmas is You," redefined its place in pop culture as one of the greatest holiday hits of all time when it reached #1 on the Billboard charts in 2011, 17 years after its debut. Mariah's influential and stellar contribution to music spans multiple genres and is showcased through her multifaceted hit catalog and a long list of diverse collaborations.

Nick Cannon Dings Fight Report on The View
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 10-Oct-2012, 6:41PM EDT
The View beat a dead horse Wednesday.
To accomplish this, The Ladies of The View invited Nick Cannon to the show to talk about the "leaked" camera-phone footage from American Idol auditions, in which his wife Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj got into a row. At the end of the row, Carey told The View den mother Babs Walters last week (who reported it on the talk show) Minaj was heard, as she walked away, saying if she were armed she'd "shoot the [b----]."
This story's been so scoffed at even Carey's husband has joined the Publicity Stunt school.
"I believe it was real to the extent of it actually happened," Cannon told The Ladies of The View Wednesday.
"But if you ask my opinion - I've produced tons of television -- I don't know how anybody... could stand with a camera phone right in front of the monitor and record it and nobody say anything, and it just magically gets on TMZ," he added.
He even pooh-poohed his wife's call to Babs to tell the ABC News veteran she was hiring extra security for herself and her twins, who were traveling with her during auditions for the competition series.
"People give you advice and say, 'You should probably do this, and you should probably do that.' I don't think it's as serious as everybody’s making it," he said.
Joy Behar, who was not yet willing to throw in the towel, asked Cannon, if the two judges continue to feud, would one of them have to leave the show.
"I have no idea. I hope not. They both getting paper!" Cannon gushed. "Would you leave for that amount of money? Slap me, kick me, do whatever - just give me my $18 million. That's what I'm talking about!"

Stevie Nicks Speaks Out on Idol Feud
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 09-Oct-2012, 7:55PM EDT
Nicki Minaj, don't mess with Stevie Nicks.
While poolside in East Hampton, N.Y. promoting her new documentary, "In Your Dreams," Nicks commented on the American Idol feud between veteran vocalist Mariah Carey and rapper Nicki Minaj. Footage obtained from the A.I. auditions showed Minaj threatening Carey by saying things like "off with your head" and "I will knock you out."
"How dare this little girl! ... If I had been Mariah I would have walked over to Nicki and strangled her to death right there," Nicks told The Daily. "I would have killed her in front of all those people and had to go to jail for it."
Nicks shot to stardom in the 70s as singer for Fleetwood Mac, while Carey first earned celebrity cred in the early 90s. Minaj, conversely, is a relative newcomer to the industry: She released her first mixtape in 2007, but did not have her big break until 2010's "Pink Friday"
The 64-year-old Nicks said that, if she were an aspiring singer today, she would go on American Idol. Nicks, however, has no plans of ever judging the show - even though she was a coach for contestants last season.
"If you stick me in the middle of a burning fire," she told The Daily, "I don’t think I’d like it very much."
The Minaj-Carey feud has renewed interest in the upcoming season of A.I., but some think the fight was staged to boost ratings.
"I think right now because the show isn't airing, they are trying to keep the buzz up," Season 3 contestant Diana DeGarmo told Celebuzz. "I think it's just a case of them causing a stir to get people excited to see it. Then when it starts, it'll be back to the contestants."
However, other reports claim that there really is bad blood between the two.
Barbara Walters, a friend of Carey's, said that the singer had revealed that Minaj had threatened to shoot her.
TMZ, which first released the A.I. fight tape, claims that the Minaj-Carey feud goes back years.
The Harajuku Barbie appeared in Carey's 2010 music video for "Up Out My Face." Minaj was not a superstar at the time, however, and Carey reportedly felt like she was helping to foster Minaj's career.
"Mariah went out of her way to be nice to Nicki and make her comfortable," B. Scott, a TV personality and Internet celeb who also appeared in the video, told TMZ. But Minaj was supposedly rude to Carey even then, "making faces at her [Mariah] laced with rude comments under her breath."
Mariah to Surprise Sharon Osbourne on The Talk

On Tuesday, October 9, it's Sharon Osbourne's "Royal Birthday Celebration," as she marks her 60th birthday with her co-hosts on CBS's The Talk.
The episode will feature surprises from Mariah, Nick Cannon, Kelly Osbourne, Ozzy Osbourne, and Sir Elton John. Watch a brief preview of the episode here.
Sharon Osbourne has always been complimentary of Mariah, and the two have had a good rapport for years. Back in 2003, Sharon gave a very colorful and entertaining introduction to Mariah's "Through the Rain" performance at American Music Awards, declaring "I f***ing LOVE HER! MARIAH!!" Last year, Sharon and her husband Ozzy sent Mariah and Nick a gift of lifesize giraffes for their newborn twins. Just last week, Sharon praised Mariah on The Talk, declaring the following:
Mariah Carey has been having number one hits for 22 years. She is a worldwide superstar! She's a diva - we bow down to her!
The Talk airs on CBS weekdays at 2pm ET and 1pm PT.

Idol Scandal: Police Were Consulted
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 06-Oct-2012, 5:44PM EDT
I take it back: I thought all this stuff between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey on the American Idol audition tour was just hype, for publicity. In the past, Idol was all about fake feuds. But I am told with certainty by sources on the tour that it all happened, that Minaj threatened Carey quite seriously.
As The NY Post reports today, Mariah's security was immediately beefed up. There was actually discussion with local police in Baton Rouge. Good grief! Since it is true, I wonder why Fox hasn't fired Minaj? This is unacceptable behavior. Listen, Mariah Carey neither needs the money or the aggravation to put up with such antics. It's up to Fox to protect her, I have an eyewitness who's heard and seen the entire debacle.

Carey Brings Extra Security To Idol Taping
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 05-Oct-2012, 4:35PM EDT
Mariah Carey promised to hire extra security on Thursday after Nicki Minaj threatened to shoot her - and she was not exaggerating.
The singer arrived for American Idol auditions in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Friday with a police escort, several bodyguards and minders in tow.
The 42-year-old, who is a new judge on the panel alongside the rapper, country singer Keith Urban and Randy Jackson, lived up to her diva reputation as she strutted in for her day on set.
She was dressed to kill in a hot pink dress and high heels, diamond shaped drop earring and oversize sunglasses. One burly bodyguard helped her keep her balance by holding onto her arm while another had the rather important task of shielding her from the sun with an umbrella.
She appeared rather uptight over the recent feud, constantly looking over her shoulder with a worried expression on her face.
Yesterday she warned she would be be taking extra safety measures because she is worried about the 29-year-old rapper's "unpredictable" behaviour.
Mariah contacted chat show host Barbara Walters, who read out a statement on The View which revealed several staff members had heard Nicki quip: "If I had a gun I would shoot the b***h."
Barbara related: "She said she is very concerned, she's with her twins, she doesn't feel that anything would happen, but Nicki is unpredictable and Mariah says she can't take a chance and has hired extra security.
"Nicki has not apologised, but they were together in meetings... during which Nicki said, "I love you, but we might fight again!"
"Mariah said at this point she doesn't feel comfortable emotionally but she will continue with the show because she loves mentoring the contestants."
The pop divas' catfight - which saw Nicki hurl a torrent of abuse at Mariah - was caught on camera and left everyone "shocked" and "embarrassed," but it seems the singers won't be calling a truce anytime soon.
Nicki launched a Twitter war, accusing the singer of wanting a "pity party" as well as bragging about being considered the best judge "since Simon" (Cowell).
The rapper wrote in a series of furious tweets: "Tried to keep quiet but let's go!!!!
"I thought we resolved it yesterday but I see u want ur pity party to continue. So I'm bout to po dot tea"
"I don't call tmz n Barbara Walters cuz I stand on my own two feet. Never needed an army. God is good. Insecurity is as cruel as the grave."
"I guess it hurts 2 have the producers tell u to ur face that nicki is the best judge we've had since simon. Awww, poor u. Keep them lies cmn."
Fellow judge Urban also weighed in on the fight, joking he felt like "the UN" caught in the middle of things. Others though wondered why Mariah might even be going to work if she felt in such danger.
Rival talent show judge, The Voice's Cee Lo Green, pointed out that the show may be looking to ensure higher ratings but added that he is not worried about his own programme's performance.
He told TMZ: "This is Hollywood, California. Hardly anything's legit. I'm not intimidated. I think it's entertainment for everybody."
Idol Arrives in Baton Rouge
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 05-Oct-2012, 3:31PM EDT
After multiple celebrity sightings Thursday and Kevin Kimball of TJ Ribs posting to Facebook that his restaurant made a late night delivery to Mariah Carey - the pop star ordered fried green tomatoes, red beans and baby back ribs - 225 can confirm that American Idol is in Baton Rouge shooting promotional videos with Three (One) O, a production company, as well as official auditions that could end up airing as part of Season 12 of the hit Fox series.
Carey, along with new judges Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban have been seen in downtown Baton Rouge. Longtime judge Randy Jackson, a Baton Rouge native, is also here, as well as host Ryan Seacrest, who was spotted filming a promo near Hotel Indigo yesterday.
Security is tight, says 225's source who is close to the shoot but requested anonymity.
The schedule is in flux, and the show's arrival has been described as a "last minute" decision, but Idol is expected to wrap its Baton Rouge shooting this evening, or at the latest, tomorrow.
Idol Auditions Head to Baton Rouge
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 04-Oct-2012, 6:55PM EDT
American Idol auditions head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana now, with more fake fireworks planned among the judges. As everyone knows by now, in Charlotte, North Carolina Nicki Minaj picked a fight with Mariah Carey. The news mushroomed into World War III and cast a big spotlight on Idol sure to build ratings when the show returns in January.
All of this is planned, dear friends. Back in the day, it was Simon vs. Paula. And whether Simon would leave the show. Or Paula. This is what Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe were so good at: creating huge amounts of contentious publicity designed to attract viewers. You need it in the first few weeks before viewers have favorite singers to root for.
I was discussing this with a Fox TV exec, reminiscing about the PT Barnum days of fake Idol publicity. And now, it's back! Nicki Minaj has been assigned the role of instigator. Mariah Carey is the victim. Who knows what they have planned for Keith Urban? Something wicked this way comes.
Mariah Not "Comfortable Emotionally" Following Idol Feud
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 04-Oct-2012, 1:03PM EDT
American Idol judge Mariah Carey says multiple people heard fellow judge Nicki Minaj say, "If I had a gun, I would shoot the b***h" after launching a curse-filled rant at Carey during an Idol audition, Barbara Walters said on The View today after interviewing Carey.
Carey told Walters, who conducted the interview this morning before the show, that she "doesn't feel comfortable emotionally" but will continue with the show and has hired extra security.
Carey, 42, told Walters the altercation between the judges began when they disagreed on a contestant's audition Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C.
The judges had a meeting with producers Wednesday to discuss the altercation. After the meeting, Minaj told Carey, "I love you but we might fight again," to which Carey responded, "No, we will not," Walters said.
Minaj's representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
But in a tweet this afternoon, Minaj said, "Hey yAll. Lets just say nicki said smthn about a gun. ppl will believe it cuz she's a black rapper. Lmao. I'll then hit up Barbara n milk it."
"Ironically no camera or mic heard the gun comment tho. Lol @ the struggle. Not even the producers believed u. Say no to violence barbz," she added. "Barbz" is Minaj's nickname for her followers.

Day 2 of American Idol Auditions in North Carolina

American Idol's celebrity judges returned for day 2 of auditions in Charlotte, NC.
Local fox affiliate Fox 8 caught up with the crew as they arrived. Host Ryan Seacrest had this to say of yesterday's taping:
"We had a very intense and heated moment on the judges' panel, as I think everybody's aware of. Nicki and Mariah, they had that dialogue together. The producers decided to call it a day. We had just a few contestants left."
The judges, meanwhile, only addressed what they thought of North Carolina and the talent. Mariah, looking stunning in purple, had this to say:
"It's going great! I love it here! It's so warm! I think the talent has been really really good, like exceptional!"
Keith Urban Discusses American Idol Incident

American Idol judge Keith Urban weighed in on the Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey feud on Wednesday at the New York Film Festival premiere of Paperboy.
The country singer, who was in the middle of the two sparring judges during a heated argument, told "Extra" he felt like "the UN." Wife Nicole Kidman chimed in calling him "Switzerland."
Urban added, "I love it, I gotta say, look I love working with passionate people. I love artists. Everyone just sort of expressing themselves. It's a very alive and very invigorating work environment. A lot of passion. Randy's is the craziest, so you know I'm predictable."
When asked about the caliber of talent they have seen so far, he replied, "Really good. We just spend the last two days in Charlotte and a lot of good singers in Charlotte. North Carolina's got a history of great artists anyway. They did well."

Nick Cannon Weighs in on Idol Blowout
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 03-Oct-2012, 2:56PM EDT
Nick Cannon is speaking out about wife Mariah Carey's heated blowout with fellow American Idol judge Nicki Minaj.
Nick stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Wednesday and chatted with Billy Bush and Kit Hoover about the exchange posted on TMZ where Nicki is reportedly heard saying, "I told them I'm not f***ing putting up with her f***ing highness over there."
"Oh why? Why do I have a 3-year-old sitting around me?" Mariah is heard saying back to Nicki. "I can't see my kids, because you decided to act like a little crazy b**** and go all around the stage."
According to Nick, these antics are detracting from the FOX series.
"When you think about what the show is actually about and represents... I feel like it's taking away from the quality of what Idol is all about. This is about people accomplishing their dreams, experts guiding these young people to do what they've done," he said of the publicized drama between his wife and Nicki.
Nick said he was proud of how Mariah handled herself.
"My wife is the strongest and classiest woman that I've ever met, if you watch the video, she just maintains her composure... I don't think she's moved by the theatrics and pageantry of it all. She signed up to do a job to help young people... this is like a sidebar. I hope that's not what this show becomes, about the catfights," he explained. "The show is solely about a singing competition, that's why America loves these shows, they want to see people reach a certain goal or win... and then to make it about something it's not, [it] kind of shows that the producers and the network are losing their foot a little bit."
Adding, "If I'm producing a show about young people accomplishing their dreams, that's what I want the show to be about, not all the side pageantry... my wife is strong, classy and she maintains her strength."
Kit asked if Nicki was possibly jealous of Mariah's long list of career achievements.
"You read the script!" Nick said with a laugh.
Nick spoke to Mariah after the Tuesday incident and said that the only thing on his wife's mind was their 1-year-old twins.
"She called me and we were talking about the kids... at the end of the day she's a mom and that's my wife... we got diapers to change and kids to raise," he told Billy and Kit.
He also explained that Mariah doesn't want incidents like these to overshadow the purpose of Idol.
"I think that was one of her main concerns... [she] signed up to be a mentor on a show that is about people accomplishing their dreams."
Idol host Ryan Seacrest spoke about the incident on Wednesday morning on his radio show, saying, "It was heated... It did go too far, to the point where the producers said, 'Let's call it a day.' Those few contestants who didn't get to see the judges, they'll bring them back today."
On Tuesday Ryan Tweeted, "Going to bed in Charlotte after an anything but dull day at #idol auditions."
Trouble on the Idol Set

From the moment the rumors began to circulate that Nicki Minaj might join the American Idol judges' panel alongside Mariah Carey, people started to speculate about how the two larger-than-life superstars would get along. And the speculation has continued since Minaj was confirmed as a judge, at which point both women went on record to assure everyone that there was absolutely no animosity between the two of them - at the time.
It appears that the co-workers have hit a bump in their working relationship, judging from a video obtained by TMZ on Tuesday (October 2) that shows Minaj and Carey in a heated argument during audition rounds in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The shooter of the video has not yet been identified, though judging from the camera angle, the clip might have been captured by someone involved with the production or someone who was granted access to the audition rooms. It is also unclear what caused the heated exchange because the clip opens in the middle of a back-and-forth between Minaj and Carey.
"I'm not going to take it back, and if you've got a f---ing problem, handle it," Minaj says to the room. Fellow judge Keith Urban, who was sitting between Minaj and Carey, looks like he's trying to calm down Minaj, who seems to tune out everyone else in the room and continues her rant.
"I told them, I'm not f---ing putting up with her f---ing highness over there," says Minaj, at which point you can hear Carey react. "Figure it out!" Minaj yells repeatedly.
"Ohhhhh, why, why, why?" Carey responds. In the midst of Minaj's loud reactions, it sounds like Carey brings up the subject of her two children, whom she would like to be spending time with versus arguing.
"Good, well then go see them now. Go see them now!" Minaj shoots back.
The clip ends mid-argument, with a helpless Keith Urban stuck in the middle.
MTV News reached out to Minaj's camp but have yet to receive a statement about the incident.

Today was the first of two days of American Idol auditions before the judges panel in Charlotte, North Carolina. Local Fox affiliate WGHP caught up with the judges today and here is what Mariah had to say:
"We work together well... You know, obviously it's not always perfect, but I personally love being there, on the panel, again, because for me, it's all about the kids, all about the people there, singing. Because I was once somebody who had a dream like that."
