Oprah Hosts New Year's Eve Bash in South Africa
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 31-Dec-2006, 1:10PM EST
US talk show star Oprah Winfrey is in South Africa to host a New Year's Eve party at Sun City that will be attended by some of Hollywood's most famous celebrities.

Winfrey, who has set up a leadership school for girls and made several previous visits to this country, was seen at the resort north-west of Johannesburg on Saturday, the Sunday Times reported.

Some of her guests, including actor Sidney Poitier, comedian Chris Rock and singers Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige, were also spotted enjoying breakfast there, according to the report.

Most of the guests are believed to have flown into the country on Friday for a weekend at the R5 000-a-night resort with wealthy Winfrey who is apparently paying for everthing except the flights.

Local media reported that details of the New Year's Eve party were wrapped in secrecy and under tight security.

Mary Carey Exposed, the real truth about & behind the 'Carey Name Game'
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 29-Dec-2006, 8:27PM EST
TMZ caught up with porn star Mary Carey last night outside of Koi restaurant, where Mary was knocking back a few to get over the papers filed against her by near-namesake Mariah Carey.

Apparently, Mimi doesn't like getting confused with Mary and has opposed Mary's request to trademark the name. Mary says Mariah is "Crazy! She's Crazy! Mary's my name!"

While TMZ cameras rolled, Mary fielded a phone call informing her that one of her spurned "stalkers" has issued a press release in support of Mariah. Her bubbly attitude seemed to burst.

The said press release apparently was from Mark J. Behar, who knows Mary 'Carey-Cook' oh so well. "Quite frankly, I'm shocked that noone has done anything about this up until now. The truth must be told."

Mariah, Whitney To Sing For Russian VIPs?
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 29-Dec-2006, 12:27PM EST
Russian oligarchs plan to repeat last year's festivities. In the very beginning of 2006 they joined an Arab sheikh on board his luxurious plane. They traveled to the Antarctic in a company of US singer Tina Turner.

For 2007 they are to board the "Flying Titanic" too to enjoy a pool, a game of bowling and super first class dinner in a plane restaurant. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Justin Timberlake will be entertaining the VIPs during the flight.

The powers-that-be will land in Iceland where they will be comfortably accommodated in a castle of ice surrounded by the scenery from The Lord of the Rings movie. The luxury plane will be carrying 160 passengers in total. The cheapest ticket for only three days costs 125,000 euros. The most expensive one is evaluated at 700,000 euros.

In 2006, Prince Azim wanted to show his fave songstress Mariah Carey that he was her number one fan. And if you're planning to impress this gal, you gotta drop some serious coin.

Rob Chilton, OK! Magazine: In August, Mariah is preparing for her concert at Madison Square Garden.

Courtney Hazlett, OK! Magazine: Mariah Carey gets this crazy knock at the door and it's these messengers who are there to present her with the gift from Prince Azim.

And what a gift! Prince Azim reportedly spent a mind-boggling $5 million to give her a whole pile of jewelry, including an 8-carat diamond ring and a platinum necklace.

Jared Shapiro, Life & Style: Mariah was completely shocked. Usually when you get $5 million worth of jewels, it's just a loaner for the night.

Rob Chilton, OK! Magazine: Without a doubt, her number one fan is Prince Azim.

Mariah's Lambs Will Not Be Silenced
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 29-Dec-2006, 1:50AM EST
Mariah's fans are among "The Most Awesomely Demented Fans in Music" according to the new issue of Blender magazine.

Will Not Be Silenced
LAMBS

Mariah's Lambs are more than just devoted fans - they're a support group she counts on to ride out the valleys in her roller-coaster career. Carey recently admitted to getting through the tough times by poring over the elaborate scrapbooks that fans have sent her, and the Lambs also organize campaigns to undermind her pop rival Madonna. They stuck with her even after her disastrous 2001 biopic Glitter, and in 2006 launched "The Glitter Project," a plan to buy multiple copies of the accompanying album and shoot the commercial dud to the top of the charts on Mariah's birthday, five years after its release (they failed).

Justify your love: "Mariah knows how to touch people through her music," says Tahiana D'egmont, a 21-year-old marketing coordinator who runs a fan site. "After she touches you like that, it's impossible not to form an attachment to her."

Mariah Takes On Porn Star
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 28-Dec-2006, 6:16PM EST
Singer Carey seeks to derail Mary Carey trademark bid

After threatening legal action to protect her valuable name from an encroaching porn star, Mariah Carey yesterday filed a formal opposition to the bid by actress (and former California gubernatorial candidate) Mary Carey to trademark her stage name.

In a notice filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the pop singer's company, Automatic Princess Holdings, argues that Mary Carey's bid to trademark her name for use in adult films, DVDs, cassettes, computer programs, and other commercial endeavors is likely to result in confusion for the consumer. The public, Mariah Carey contends, is "likely to mistakenly associate the goods offered" by Mary Carey--whose real name is Mary Cook--with the performer's "goods and services."

The December 27 notice of opposition, a copy of which you'll find below, requests that Mary Carey's trademark attempt be rejected by USPTO officials. Mary Carey, 26, has appeared in films like "Hot Showers 6" and "Lesbian Big Boob Bangeroo 2," and received 11,000 votes in her 2003 election won by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mariah Carey, 36, is, as her filing notes, "a world-famous singer, musical performer, and celebrity." She also appeared in the 2001 film "Glitter." (7 pages)

Celebrity Circus Time in Aspen
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 28-Dec-2006, 9:01AM EST
Guess what. Last night I got to interview Mariah Carey.

We all know about my little tabloid fetish, so this was sort of an unexpected surprise. I totally get it that there's an unspoken Cool Guy Code in Aspen that says you're never supposed to fuss over celebrities, but I don't really care. I think it's cool.

I've had all kinds of celebrity interludes during my illustrious writing career, and even though I've never slept with any of them, it's definitely on my list of things to do before I die (along with hitching a ride on a private plane and living in Paris). Christmas week is one of my favorite times of year in Aspen because I love seeing all these stars wandering aimlessly around my town, like they've come here to hang out with me.

So last night I got to interview Mariah because the crew from Entertainment Tonight couldn't make it and they were super desperate to find someone who was stupid enough to spend half the night sitting around waiting to do a 60-second interview with a big star. Of course I had this huge zit on the side of my face that was really easy to see with all those bright lights. I thought I would be okay hiding it behind my hair, but Mariah was quite tall in her heels and I am a midget so I had my head tilted back the whole time. Thank god I was cut out of the shot - but I swear that was me holding the mic, really, it was.

Mariah was cool and everything, but the only problem with the whole arrangement was I was on the wrong side of the microphone. Because I do understand those little unspoken celebrity rules, I resisted the urge to hip check Mariah out of the shot and scream "Hey lady! Don't you know who I am?"

Mariah is the biggest Christmas fan ever
The stars are gently twinkling on the Christmas tree. The wrapping paper is rustling. Outside, the snow is slowly falling down from the sky... everything seems like a fairytale and right in the middle, there is Mariah Carey. "I love Christmas so much and I guess, I am the most festive person on earth," says Mariah with a twinkle in her eyes. And that's why the pop singer rents a bungalow in Aspen (Colorado) every year. "In Aspen, it's always snowing around Christmas. You can be sure to have a white Christmas there. It's really like a fairytale." Mariah ("In my heart, I'm still 12 years old!") loves to be a princess, but there's still one thing missing to make her Christmas dream come true: The prince who embraces her, who offers her a glass of golden champagne and who spoils her with sweet cookies and kisses. Goose bumps all over. We bet there won't be any Santa Claus who doesn't want Mariah to sing "All I Want For Christmas Is You" to him...

Mariah's Merry Holiday
Mariah Carey arrived in Santa's sleigh in Aspen, Colorado.

The Grammy winner wanted to make the season bright for foster kids from the Denver Department of Human Services.

Mariah: "It's really fun for me, more than anything too. I'm selfish. It's fun for me."

The kids got the chance to do some skiing and some tubing down the slopes.

Mariah: "You know, yes, it's a glamorous place and everything like that but to me it's about giving back and doing something like this with kids that you know, kids that you don't know, just anything that you can do to help make a difference in someone's life."

Mariah transformed the inside of a ski lodge into a winter wonderland.

Mariah: "I love Christmas so much and ever since I was little I was like, I just always wanted to have like a white Christmas every year. This is Christmasland you know. So it's very North Pole-esque."

The Christmas Invasion
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 26-Dec-2006, 7:09PM EST
The 18 hottest songs this week on national radio airplay chart, according to Nielsen BDS and Arbitron data, covering radio airplay from Dec. 19-25 (based on percentage of total audience growth) are holiday numbers.

Elvis Presley's Blue Christmas had the biggest increase, 54.5%, but it was low on the chart the previous week (it climbed from 90 to 54 this week). More impressive is the second hottest, Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song, which was up 42.9% and nearly knocked off Jose Feliciano's Feliz Navidad (which was up 31.7% and zoomed 23-13) as the No. 1 Christmas song this week. Cole climbed 34-14 on the chart.

The other top-charting Christmas songs are: Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You (38-17), Brenda Lee's Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree (32-18), Bobby Helms' Jingle Bell Rock (35-22), Burl Ives' A Holly Jolly Christmas (36-25), The Eagles' Please Come Home for Christmas (45-28) and Bing Crosby's White Christmas (46-29). That's eight Christmas songs in the top 30, if you're counting along, and there are seven others in the rest of the top 50.

"Is It True?", page 30

Is Mariah afraid of being confused with a porn star?
No. Mariah Carey is one of the music world's biggest stars, so it was hard to believe that the Grammy winner has been worried that fans would ever mistake her for a porn star! But reps for adult-movie actress Mary Carey insist Mariah's lawyers were trying to stop Mary from trademarking her similar-sounding name.

"Confusion between your client and our client is likely," a rep for Mary said in a press release. "It's funny she thinks people are to get us confused," added Mary. "It is absolutely ridiculous."

But it's Mariah's rep who calls the rumor of litigation ridiculous. "There is no lawsuit," her rep tell In Touch. "I feel this a ploy for publicity. They're obviously just trying to cause drama to make some noise and bring attention to themselves." [More on this story in Robin's blog, Proud Mary]

Smell of Success
Mariah Carey, 37, is joining the ranks of celebrities with signature fragrances. She's pairing up with Elizabeth Arden Inc. to debut a perfume in spring 2007. "We look forward to launching an inspiring new fragrance with Mariah that will become a timeless classic," the company's chairman said.

Feb. 8th - Mariah Carries Trophies
Mariah Carey wins three Grammys for 2005's top-selling comeback CD, The Emancipation of Mimi. Although there is a tiny drawback: All of her wins are for R&B awards handed out before the telecast, and to a true diva, an award without camera time is about as useful as a sitting ovation.

Following Nipplegate and 2004's oversexed Damita Jo, we were rooting for a Mariah-style comeback. But despite the contributions of co-producer/boyfriend Jermaine Dupri and longtime producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, 20 Y.O. is just another shameless study in carnal desires.

There's No Place Like Radio For The Holidays
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 23-Dec-2006, 6:28PM EST
It's interesting in Chart Beat that you note this is the seventh year in a row that a holiday song has hit No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In the '90s this didn't happen so much. Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the most notable modern holiday song, yet it only peaked at No. 6. In 2006 it would undoubtedly hit No. 1.

Why do you think holiday songs are doing so much better on the AC chart in the 00s?

Jason [our very own Looking In columnist]

Fred Bronson of Billboard Chart Beat Chat:

Dear Jason,
The answer becomes clear when you realize that the Adult Contemporary chart is an airplay-only chart, measuring which songs are played on radio stations that are identified as playing AC music. Changes in the chart over the years are merely reflections of changes at AC radio.

The trend in recent years - particularly in the last seven - is to turn to holiday programming in the last two months of the year. Many AC stations only program holiday music with no non-seasonal songs being played; other AC stations provide a mix of current hits with holiday music.

While I love Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You," and while it's selling well digitally (it's up 8-7 on this week's Hit Digital Songs chart, where it is the only holiday song in the top 10), your assumption that it would be No. 1 on the AC chart is incorrect. We do compile an Adult Contemporary Recurrent chart for older songs, and "All I Want for Christmas Is You" rebounds 15-10 this week after peaking at No. 9. Older holiday songs, including Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," Burl Ives' "A Holly, Jolly Christmas" and Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, " all rank higher than "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

Note: Watch out for Jason's next blog in Looking In. Coming to you right around the New Year!

"How Can I Be Down?" Mariah Comes Clean
STUCK OFF THE REALNESS?
Getting down with The Lox and Mobb Deep was good business for pop's biggest money-maker. But is there more to Mariah than blaxploitation queen?

"I go round consciously trying to maintain in a world that's a little bit crazy," says Mariah Carey. Nestled deep in the backseat of her limo. "And I really love music. Like I really, seriously do, and I love the fact that now I'm able to do what I want and I just wanna get it exposed to as many people as I can and even if 99.9 percent of people who hear 'The Roof' don't know that it's 'Shook Ones,' it is.

Well that sounds reasonable doesn't it? Girlfriend's got her divorce on and now she's getting open. Hanging with the homeboys, shaking off the shackles of a faded relationship and making the kind of music that she always wanted to make. Way back when she was a teenager. Teenage-dreaming about success like this. But now. Almost for the first time in her life. Certainly for the first time in her professional career, she is being herself. And that should be a cause for an adulatory "Go, girl!" But for some reason folks ain't feelin' it. The skepticism and mistrust are palpable. And her motivation is being questioned. They say she's bandwagon-jumping. They say she ain't really down. They say she's fakin' it. READ MORE -->

HQ Photos: Mariah in Aspen
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 22-Dec-2006, 4:57PM EST

From MTV News:
Mariah Carey will spend the holidays in Aspen, Colorado. She told local publication Aspen Peak that while she won't be skiing much, she does have some festive plans for the cold powder. "I'm not a great skier at all," she said in the magazine's winter issue. "I take one run and ski in an outfit that's cute." So why Aspen? "I love having a white Christmas. I love the vibe of Aspen... I have a sense of feeling at home there." When in the snowy, mile-high town, Carey plans to do as the Aspenites do - or at least as she's been told they do. "I like to get out of the hot tub and roll in the snow. Someone told me that was a tradition in Aspen, but maybe they were lying to me. It's a tradition for us to have Santa Claus-looking bikinis, jump in the hot tub and roll in the fresh snow." Note: Read Mariah's full interview with Aspen Peak magazine here.

From People's Off The Rack:
Mariah-Oh-Meter: Rate Her Snow Look!
In pure Mariah style, the singer braved the snowiest night in Aspen Wednesday to party with friends and family. Carey kept warm in a very tight leather jacket, second-skin black pants, high heels and dark oversized shades. (So what if it was at nighttime -- and snowing?!). We love how delicately she carries her glass of champagne through the flurries. What a trooper! On a scale of One being Congresswoman conservative, and Ten being ready for her video vixen close-up, we'd give this look a Six. Afterall, she's gonna get a serious draft unless she zips up more!

Tell People: On a scale of one to Ten, how would you rate Mariah's oh-factor in this look?

Mariah Carey, who's in Aspen now to host a party for Aspen Peak magazine, is getting in some fun before starting production next month on "Tennessee." She plays a country-and-Western singer. Producer Lee Daniels tells us, "I think she could have a country crossover career. I'm hoping she'll write a couple of songs for the movie."

Robin's New Blog: "Proud Mary"
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 21-Dec-2006, 3:40PM EST
A ballet dancer becomes a porn star, changes her name to one identical to "Mariah Carey," and runs for Governor of California against Arnold Schwarzenegger. Are we in the twilight zone?

Mary Carey is currently taking steps to trademark her self-applied name that is more than similar to Mariah Carey's birth name. She seeks to register the trademark for audio and video recordings, which is sure to cause confusion and conflict of interests.

Find out what led to these events and why Mariah's lawyer is taking action in Robin's newest rumor blog, Proud Mary.

Holiday Ditties
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 19-Dec-2006, 12:52PM EST
No celebration comes close to Christmas when it comes to music searches, although Adam Sandler's Hanukkah song always manages to crack the Buzz rotation.

If you want to plan your holiday party playlist, stick to the oldies. Only four songs among Yahoo! If you can't prime your vocal cords for her high notes, check out the rest of the top 20 holiday ditties according to your searches.

"Mimi" Tour Interview
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 19-Dec-2006, 8:38AM EST
Just posted on MariahCarey.com's Virtual Ticket section is a video of Mariah talking about the special guests who appeared on her "The Adventures of Mimi" tour. Here are some of what Mariah had to say about them:

Sean Paul - "It was so good to have Sean Paul on the tour. He was very, very festive. The crowd really enjoyed him."

Busta Rhymes - "Busta is amazing. I was nervous in the beginning because Busta is very... he's excited. I can't come out with a 'I came to have a party...' after what he tells people what to do and say on stage. He's a little intense. But I do the best I can with what I got."

Da Brat - "When she comes out on Heartbreaker, it's just incredible. It's so much better than when it's just the screen to have Brat there. She's so full of excitement."

Mike Jones - "We were in Houston and Mike Jones came out and I wanted to watch him like, 'why can't I watch his part.' I was so mad 'cause I didn't know if he was gonna come out or not. But that was completely an amazing moment."

Jermaine Dupri - "When we did ATL, when Jermaine came out and was like 'A-T-L!' and then everybody was really screaming wild. But he was like, 'A-T-L!' Hello! scream a little louder. It was really funny."

Sean 'Puffy' Combs - "It was just nice to have Puff come out 'cause he's very much a star no matter where he is."

Jay-Z - "I didn't know whether Jay was gonna come out on Heartbreaker or not so I'm sitting there kind of waiting, 'is he coming out, is he not coming out?' And Jay came out. It was so loud like the noise was so deafening when he came out. That was a real, real treat.

Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 19-Dec-2006, 8:31AM EST
Dr. Keith Ablow Show, a nationally syndicated talk show owned by Warner Bros Television, is looking for Mariah's #1 fan! In a letter sent to us by production assistant, Sarah Grossbart, she writes:

"We are working on a show about celebrity super fans and are looking for huge Mariah Carey fans who want to talk about why they love her so much and the different things they have done because of their obsession. Would you do anything to be like Mariah, or to meet her? If so, we want to hear about it!"

They plan to tape this show on Friday, January 12 at their studio in New York City and are interested in speaking with anyone who feels that she/he is a super fan of Mariah who would be interested in coming on television to talk about it. They will pay for all travel expenses for anyone who tapes the show.

Send Sarah an e-mail at sarah.grossbart@drkeithtv.com and tell her your story, and be sure to check out their website at www.drkeithtv.com.

News From Portugal
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 18-Dec-2006, 6:51PM EST
--Mobile network operator, Optimus.pt, has sent an SMS message to all its subscribers announcing that Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is available for download at the site for just €2.5 (US$3.28). Great publicity for the song!

--On page 8 of the December 16th issue of "Unica," a magazine from the Portuguese newspaper, "Expresso," a big picture of Mariah graces the page with a caption talking about how Mariah Carey is trying to block porn star Mary Carey from trademarking her similar-sounding stage name. Click on the thumbnail to the right to view the full scan.

--The Mary Carey issue is also being reported in the newspaper, "Correio da Manha." The article is available in Portuguese here.

--In "All Over The Web" on Clix, there is an article that talks about the two new albums Mariah is putting out in 2007. Click here for the article.

Nothing really new. But it's great to see Mariah all over the magazines and news.

Leona Being Groomed To Be The Next Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 18-Dec-2006, 11:58AM EST
The X Factor queen has what it takes to break the States.

Leona Lewis, X Factor's first female winner, is being lined up to steal Mariah Carey's crown.

Simon Cowell has revealed Clive Davis, the chief of J Records in the US (home to Alicia Keys and Whitney Houston among others) has told him he wants to make the gorgeous 21-year-old with the enormous pipes a huge star on the other side of the pond.

Simon said, "Leona has a commitment to go and see Clive. It's an amazing opportunity. I believe she'll be up there with Mariah and Whitney. It's a fairytale ending."

Which means we could be seeing lovely Le, like Mariah, linking up with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg in future.

Ahh.. Let's just hope Leona never goes all Carey-style diva on us.

Related story from Guardian Unlimited UK. Below are excerpts:

Oh. She does win. Maybe there is some justice in this world after all. She gets her £1m recording deal, and we see her first single being pressed. "I'm speechless," she says, for a speech. You're going to have to work on that one, honey, you're just too normal and nice. I can't see you having a tantrum in the first-class cabin of a transatlantic jet.

Everyone predicts great things from her; she'll be a world-class diva, our very own Mariah Carey, from Hackney. I really hope they're right, but I see another possible picture in my crystal ball. She gets her Christmas number one, then starts the slow slide back towards obscurity. In a year or so, there'll be a small item in the news-in-brief section of the paper about her being dropped by her record label. "Leona," you'll say. "I remember her. I think."

Quick Notes
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 17-Dec-2006, 1:12PM EST
"Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)," "All I Want For Christmas Is You," and "O Holy Night" music videos were recently played on BET's After Dark show. After Dark airs Thursdays and Fridays at 1 a.m. (ET/PT).
Last night on E!'s "Outrageous Celebrity Feuds," the Mariah-Christina rift was #27 on the countdown. You can download a video here.
According to Pollstar, Mariah's "The Adventures of Mimi" is the 6th top-selling concert tour in North America. With data provided by concert promoters and venue managers, artists are ranked by verage box office gross per city and includes the average ticket price for shows in North America. Below is the Top 10 list from Monterey Herald.

1. Elton John; $1,863,561; $111.15
2. Cirque Du Soleil-''Delirium''; $1,295,028; $83.58
3. Eric Clapton; $1,135,060; $86.04
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers; $1,001,233; $58.04
5. Aerosmith/Mötley Crüe; $950,972; $63.59
6. Mariah Carey; $896,982; $77.61
7. Dixie Chicks; $824,014; $65.77
8. Tool; $686,402; $50.60
9. Rascal Flatts; $681,413; $50.45
10. Guns N' Roses; $500,380; $59.42
Westlife were guests last night on Holland's talk show, Jensen. They were talking about the people they've worked with throughout their careers and mentioned Mariah as "a fantastic woman to work with." The host then asked what was so fantastic about Mariah. One of the boys jokingly said, "It has to do with something on the left and something on the right."
In questions of weight, it's an ever-losing game. Celebrities are bashed for being "fat" — think Mariah Carey or Alicia Silverstone - when they may still be pounds thinner than the average American. When they reduce, they're criticized for being too thin. [Los Angeles Times' Is skinny going out of style?]

Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 17-Dec-2006, 3:32AM EST
Mariah is the Hot Trend feature in this week's issue of Life & Style.

Flattering Striped Henleys
Leave it to sexy songbird Mariah Carey to give a casual henley a flirty makeover in the form of sexy horizontal stripes. Rather than adding extra pounds, the super-skinny stripes on the $65 Splendid tee Mariah wore in Beverly Hills on Dec. 5 had a whittling effect on the curvy crooner's waistline!

"Striped henleys are really hot right now," say Splendid founder Moise Emquies. "They're great for layering under chunky solid sweaters for a fun pop of color," he says. "And because they're long, henleys actually make you look leaner!"

X Factor Champ Leona To Work With Mariah?
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 17-Dec-2006, 3:00AM EST
Leona Lewis entered the history books by becoming the first ever mixed-race contestant to win a British Reality TV Talent Show. The 21-year-old angel-faced, likened to Mariah Carey for her singing style, beat 18-year-old Ray Quinn into second place in the grand finals of X Factor.

Leona will be marketed Stateside and by the end of 2007 will be touring with big name stars such as Mariah Carey. An industry insider revealed: "Simon [Cowell] knows that Leona's got the whole package - looks and talent to match. Simon's got big plans for Leona. With all his connections, he'll ensure that she's put right out there in the States. He's going to get her on tour with big names like Mariah Carey to get her the most exposure he can."

"My Grammy Moment" Debuts at 49th Grammys
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 15-Dec-2006, 4:04PM EST
Attention Mariah fans! Here's your chance to show off your singing talent and be the next pop superstar!

"My Grammy Moment," a competition sponsored by the Recording Academy will allow unsigned talent the chance to compete for the career-launching pleasure of bringing the sexy back with Justin Timberlake at this year's Grammys.

Would-be superstars cannot be currently signed to a recording contract, must be over 18 years of age, and, presumably buried in the fine print, must be able to "carry a tune in a bucket."

Singers must submit through Yahoo! Music a 60-second video of an a cappella version of one of the following ditties by Jan. 3: Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You," Faith Hill's "Breathe," Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It," Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love," Aretha Franklin's "Respect," and, for the fellas, "Luther Vandross' "Dance with My Father" or Timberlake's own "Cry Me a River."

A dozen entrants will be named Jan. 8, at which point the masses will be able to view the submissions and further vet the wannabe pop stars down to five, then three, finalists. Voting via Internet and text messaging will continue through the Grammy ceremony and the winner will be revealed live, when he or she takes the stage with Timberlake.

For submission information and further details, click here.

Mariah in People's "Before They Were Stars"
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 14-Dec-2006, 3:53PM EST
Mariah is featured on pages 115 and 134 in the new People magazine's special issue,"Before They Were Stars."

I Wanna Rock With You, Page 115
Put it this way: These are the kids you didn't want to run up against at the local talent show

Mariah Carey
Hers would be a Cinderella success story, but for Mariah, childhood was anything but a fairy tale. Her parents, a biracial couple who divorced when she was 3, were victims of racial hatred - they "had their dogs poisoned, cars blown up," she recalled. While her mother supported her three kids, Mariah started singing lessons at 4, performing in grade school and was writing her own songs by junior high. In the end, there was a glass slipper of sorts. "I have about 1,000 pairs of shoes," she said.

Living over a Long Island storefront didn't get Mariah Carey down - it just prepared her for life in a penthouse. "We were poor. We had nothing - no security," said the singer. "I feel I paid my dues."

Mariah To Write Book About Her "500 Hours" of Beauty School
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 13-Dec-2006, 8:02PM EST
Mariah Carey's manager, Benny Medina, is pitching a lifestyle type book cum pseudo memoir titled "500 Hours." These are the hours Mariah ostensibly went to beauty school just for the heck of it and she now intends to turn her experience into literature. Well, maybe not literature, but at the very least -- valuable tips.

What's with all the Mariah Carey haters?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 13-Dec-2006, 4:32PM EST
She attracts almost universal hatred and yet sells millions of records. Can I be the only one out there who thinks Mimi's music is really rather good?
by Lindesay Irvine

There are certain stars in pop the public loves to hate - almost murderously, it sometimes seems. At the moment, for some people it's Pete Doherty. Others still wish to burn Phil Collins alive. Personally, I want to give Chris Martin a really thorough slapping whenever I see him doing his "look at me, I'm a hugely sensitive showman" routine on telly.

One star who attracts almost universal contempt these days seems to be Mariah Carey. Her very name is almost a cuss word, in middle-class circles at any rate. (At our office party this year, guests have been invited to run up CDs of a couple of tunes to rock the room, with just one proviso: no Mariah Carey. All I Want for Christmas is You was also named the worst Christmas song ever in yesterday's Observer Music Monthly.

And this hate will almost certainly find further fuel from the weekend's news that Mimi is to sue porn star Mary Carey (to stop her trademarking the very similar-sounding name on the grounds that customers might confuse the two, thereby defaming her own "brand"). As a legal action it does sound like a fairly classic "only in America" legal case, particularly if you look - as in the interest of research, you understand, I did - at how very unlike the two Careys look. No link there, you might have noticed - you'll just have to google for Mary yourself. This is a family blog.

But back to the better known Carey. While I do find the tales of her prima-donnish behaviour, her ridiculous demands for grand luxuries in hotels, etc amusing - I can't share the hatred so many people seem to have for her music. (And, since she's obviously emotionally vulnerable, I get a bit irritated at the public venom directed at a fragile nature.) People have actually said to me, in conversations about music when I've enthused about my taste for R'n'B, "I don't believe it, next thing you'll be telling me you like Mariah Carey!"

The thing is, actually, I really do. I'm not a fan of her work while she was the property of Tommy Mottola, the Columbia records executive who star-spotted her, then became her husband while still managing her career. It's aimed at the mass market in a shameless way that deploys Carey's astonishing singing range to fake up strong emotion, and it's often nauseating.

However, since she and Mottola separated in 1996 and Carey was able to incorporate her love for hip-hop into the songs, she has just got better and better. The single We Belong Together is plainly one of the very best pop songs recorded in the last 20 years. Yet I can remember a lot of people, after Live 8, saying it was the most appalling thing they saw all day. I saw the performance too, and I thought it was great.

Tell me: am I entirely alone in recognising how good she is? Millions and millions of people buy her records - so why does my love for these songs feel like such a lonely passion?

Aspen Magazine Editor-in-Chief Sourgraping?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 13-Dec-2006, 2:58PM EST
The article below appears on Forbes.com. It quotes Janet O'Grady, editor in chief of Aspen Magazine with not-so-nice words about Mariah. Coincidentally, its rival magazine, Aspen Peak, currently has Mariah on its cover. Sourgraping?

Of course, some celebrity hideaways are so exclusive, even the biggest stars get the cold shoulder instead of the red carpet treatment.

"In Aspen, there is a pecking order," says Janet O'Grady, editor in chief of Aspen Magazine. "You have people who've been here since the 1970s, like Jack Nicholson. He comes here, his family's here and he's had the same ski instructor forever. But the person all the locals make fun of is Mariah Carey. None of the manicurists wanted to go do her nails when she visited! Aspen has a power-elite--we have intellectual and political celebrities. We'd rather see Bill Clinton [who is another well-known Aspen vacationer]."

Mariah Carey says she's been coming to Aspen during Christmas since 1997, and would like to build a place of her own on the outskirts of town. Carey plans to host an invite-only Boxing Day party at the Hotel Jerome on Dec. 26 to talk about her new CD and part in the movie Tennessee.

DJ Clue To Work With Mariah on New Album
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 12-Dec-2006, 8:47PM EST
In a recent interview with Rashmi Shastri, DJ Clue revealed that he is slated to work with Mariah on a few tracks for her upcoming album.

Whose idea was it to do the remix of Mariah Carey's "Don't Forget About Us"?
Me and Mariah came up with that together. It features Styles P and Fabolous. It has the vibe of the "We Belong Together" remix. You can check the new remix on iTunes and it's on my new album as well.

What is it like working with Mariah?
Mariah is cool and she's fun to be around, we've been friends for a while now and work well together. She brings Jack [her dog] to the studio all the time. I'm supposed to get with her this weekend to work on something for her new album. Once she has an idea we work quick. It's going to be some hot, hip hop music. I'm hopefully going to do a few tracks on that project. It was a good experience DJ'ing for her Emancipation of Mimi tour because the crowd was hype.

The Latest on "Tennessee"
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 12-Dec-2006, 2:33PM EST
AOL Black Voices reports that hip-hop mogul, Damon Dash will be an executive producer for Tennessee.

Tennessee, the forthcoming Lee Daniels-helmed drama with Mariah Carey and James D'Arcy attached, is set to start shooting next month [in mid-January 2007 as previously reported on Nov. 25th]. Dash said he will executive produce that project.

Damon Dash most recently executive produced critically acclaimed films The Woodsman starring Kevin Bacon, and Mos Def; and Shadowboxer with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Helen Mirren. As we all know, in 2005, the Dash-directed film State Property 2 featured a sassy cameo appearance from Mariah Carey.

Meanwhile, Vi from the IMDb Boards claims she has read the script to Tennessee. Note that we cannot determine the validity of her claim. What follows below are what Vi revealed about the alleged script. (Warning: May contain spoilers)

--"Her name is Krystal, she's a truck-stop waitress who meets the brothers [Carter and Ellis] when they come into the diner. She's in a loveless marriage with a cop so she goes with the brothers on their journey and becomes a guardian angel to them somewhat. She's an aspiring country singer. She's sort of a love interest for Ellis, the younger brother. Her role becomes extremely crucial when they make it to Nashville."

--"But since the younger brother is in early 20s, 22 at most, he's never really experienced love. Krystal lets him experience this emotion. So I know I'm correct, it is Ellis, the younger brother who has a more romantic relationship with Krystal. There is one scene where Krystal and Ellis share an intense kiss and in the same scene he calls her beautiful (this is the first girl he calls beautiful)."

--"Krystal's husband just serves as her boiling point to get out of town and comes back later in the movie as again a roadblock for Krystal."

--"Carter and Krystal do have some heart to heart and private moments, but again not in a romantic or sexual way."

In January 2007, YG Entertainment will release a provocative animated ringtone for reggae artist Skull's first single "Boom di, Boom di" from his forthcoming album. Under the direction of Morgan Carey, brother of the multi-platinum Mariah Carey, the animated ringtone is set to make big waves and take reggae to another level in the multimedia world. (Pictured on right is Skull with Mariah Carey in Los Angeles, CA)

The audio single, "Boom Di, Boom Di" is currently available exclusively on Skull's MySpace Music.

411mania staffers pick their Top 5 Christmas songs in the inaugural edition of its Music Zone's Top 5.

Morgan Marx (music reviewer):
3. Mariah Carey "All I Want For Christmas Is You"
Because Xmas isn't just about indie elitism. A lesser writer would make some sort of joke about it being a "candy cane for the ear – sugary sweet and only good once a year." But I won't go there. I really like the version from the equally saccharine film "Love Actually."

Tim O'Sullivan (sports columnist/movie reviewer):
3. Mariah Carey - All I want for Christmas is O'Sullivan [You]
It's the last student Monday night at Lava and Ignite nightclub tonight before us pesky students leave uni for home, for the Christmas period, and I know this is going to be blasted out of every speaker at least seventeen times. It's fun, Mariah's vocals are at their peak and I can't fail to love it.

Back in 2004, Mariah came to see N.O.R.E. in a studio while he was recording the WhatUp2DaHood mixtape. She then took part in the "Dame Dash" intro and outro on the mixtape. In the studio, Mariah met producer Scram Jones for the first time whom she later collaborated with on The Emancipation of Mimi's track, "Your Girl."

A rare glimpse of what transpired behind the scenes can now be seen here! Thanks to Alex' of #Schnookiez!

Deck The Charts
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 11-Dec-2006, 4:44PM EST
Hi Fred,
I haven't written for a long time but I enjoy reading your column every week on Billboard.com.

I'm familiar with the fact that Christmas albums and singles which are old [are not eligible for] the current charts, but I don't see why they aren't. If the charts should be a representation of what is popular and true in the music biz, why shouldn't seasonal albums count when in fact they are popular, even if it may be for three or four weeks?

For example, why shouldn't Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" be eligible to chart even for a few weeks?

Last year it was No. 1 on the digital chart and surely would have had a great chart position on the Hot 100. The song is popular and in my opinion everything that the public buys or likes should be noted.

Furthermore can you inform us if there has been a case where a Christmas album has debuted at No. 1?

Kire Veljanovski
Skopje, Macedonia

Fred Bronson of Billboard's Chart Beat Chat:

Dear Kire,
I realize that from the point of view of a chart fan, or a fan of a specific artist like Mariah Carey, it seems unfair that a song like "All I Want for Christmas Is You" isn't eligible to chart on the Hot 100.

And that prompts me to repeat something I've said many times in this column: the main purpose of the charts is to serve the music business. They are a tool for the industry so record companies, radio stations and retailers (among others) can measure how product is performing in the marketplace. Charts like the Hot 100 are designed to measure the success of current product, as opposed to catalog product.

Kenny G's "Miracles - The Holiday Album" went to No. 1 in its fourth week on The Billboard 200. Before that CD, the last Christmas album to top the chart was "Holiday Sing Along With Mitch" by Mitch Miller in January 1962, long before any album had debuted at No. 1.

Other Mariah Mentions on Chart Beat Chat:
In terms of female songwriters, Beyonce moves ahead of Janet Jackson and Carole King and is tied for third place with Diane Warren for nine No. 1s. Madonna is credited with 10 and Mariah Carey has 16.

Now that "Irreplaceable" has ascended to the top, Beyonce has received songwriting credit for three songs in the same calendar year. The only other women to do that are Mariah Carey (in 1991) and Carole King (in 1971). Quite an accomplishment in a business dominated by men!

MTV Revisits Mariah's Movie Debut
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 11-Dec-2006, 10:01AM EST
MTV looks back at high-profile music-to-movie debuts. Here's what they had to say about Mariah's:

Mariah Carey
Sure, the movie-career launches of Madonna ("Desperately Seeking Susan"), Jewel ("Ride With the Devil") and Faith Hill ("The Stepford Wives") didn't exactly go according to plan, but no one has ever walked headfirst into a career-trashing truck quite like Mariah did with "Glitter" (2001). Limping into theaters amid her musical meltdown, the 9/11 attacks and her attempts to sell ice cream, "Glitter" probably would have gotten lost in the shuffle even if it were good, but oh, was it bad. Carey has since reinvented herself successfully from a musical point of view, but after the merciless drubbing that tarnished "Glitter," it's doubtful that we'll ever see another movie from Mimi.

Mariah & Jack on VH1's Outrageous Extravagances

Aired yesterday on VH1, Mariah's dog Jack's cross-country limo ride from New York to Los Angeles made the "20 Most Outrageous Celebrity Extravagances Ever" at #16.

#16 Mariah's Dog Delivery
Mariah Carey has done a lot of silly things but perhaps nothing beats the time when she arranged a cross-country limo ride for her dog and racked up on #16 most outrageous celebrity extravagance.

Chris Rovzar, NY Daily News: "Mariah loves her Jack Russell Terrier, Jack, and the two of them are inseparable. He had appeared in several of her videos. He's everywhere that she is."

In 2005, Mariah took pet ownership to new extremes. It all started when the canine-craving diva was stranded at a video shoot in L.A. and she was desperate for a little doggy companionship. Meanwhile, Jack was pining away in their New York penthouse. And while most pet owners would just suck it up, Mariah called her travel agent.

Jonah Weiner, Blender Magazine: "So Mariah has her dog brought to the airport. She wants him put in a first-class seat and they tell her, 'We can't do that, it's a dog'."

Jack might have been grounded but not for long. Mariah quickly arranged for a chauffeured limousine to drive her doggy 3,000 miles cross-country to L.A. and drive home one of the most unfathomable pop star expenses ever.

News From Germany
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 10-Dec-2006, 2:10PM EST
Mariah is featured in a "Battle of Styles" in the December 7th issue of In Touch Germany, all on 4 pages!

Mariah Carey (36) vs. Beyoncé Knowles (25)
It's a duel between two mega voices and in this case Beyoncé turns out to be more victorious. Mariah dons a dress by US designer Randi Rahm with a white fur jacket and diamonds - which is glamor all over! But in the end the tender glitter gown fits Beyoncé a little bit better. Winner: Beyoncé

Mariah Carey (36) vs. Renée Zellweger (37)
Mariah is well-known for her short outfits. By wearing a short Pucci dress, her wedges look just great and perfectly emphasize her legs. Renée, however, chose the legend's long version of the aforementioned dress. Simply elegant! But sadly, the flat Roman sandals don't go with it at all. Winner: Mariah

Mariah Carey (36) vs. Lindsay Lohan (20)
The shorter the better? Well, it depends! The short Louis Vuitton skirt and the tight shirt are not really flattering to Mariah. Actress Lindsay shows us how to wear the designer's skirt the right way - which is on the hips and all down to the knees. Perfect! Winner: Lindsay

Mariah Carey (36) vs. Julia Stiles (25)
No matter if it's black or red - the gown just looks amazing on both of the ladies, but the hairstyle of the actress ("The Omen") is too neat and pretty in this combination. With her open mane, Mariah proves to be more courageous and with that attaches a sexy touch to all of it. Winner: Mariah

Mariah Carey (36) vs. Kate Winslet (31)
No question, Kate looks beautiful in this lace dress. But when it comes to sex appeal, she's got no chance in its long version and the simple peeptoes. The short and black one, however, seems to be simply made for Mariah. And by wearing these extraordinary high heels with it, she looks more than awesome! Winner: Mariah

Mariah Carey (36) vs. Uma Thurman (36)
The 70s glasses and her brown skin match perfectly with the outfit by Louis Vuitton; Mariah proves to have an appreciation for everything style. US star Urma, however, looks pale in this light-colored gown. Moreover, she leaves her coat open and with that takes all the elegance off this designer's masterpiece. Winner: Mariah

Mariah Carey (36) vs. Melania Trump (36)
Mariah loves to present herself in glamorous gowns... but with these XXL gloves she almost seems to be too dressed up in the Alexandra McQueen gown. Melania, the wife of Donald Trumps (60), presents herself more elegantly in this ensemble, with another hairstyle and glittering jewelry. Winner: Melania

In other news, Mariah's "Honey" was #1 on a video countdown that was shown earlier today on MTV Germany (from 8 - 9 p.m.) during a show called "MTV Noise." The countdown's title was "They Never Sounded Sweeter" and this was undoubtedly a big surprise because normally MTV Germany is not a big fan of Mariah's.

News From Turkey
Posted by Adi on Sunday, 10-Dec-2006, 1:44PM EST
-- Mariah was featured in the October edition of the Turkish magazine "Dream". The article included a review and pictures of the "The Adventures of Mimi" opening night in Miami:

"Mariah Carey started her 2006 tour in Miami, where without a doubt, she gave all her energy into her performances. Mimi made a huge comeback after all the trouble from the past and returned to the stage. She's finally back for all the fans that have been missing her during her stage absence. Her sexy costumes prove that the years passed by, but did nothing to Mariah at all."

-- In the same magazine, "The Roof" was ranked at position #54 of the "Top 130 Videos of All Time".

-- The October 2006 edition of "Billboard Turkey" featured an article about the "firsts" in music history and mentioned Mariah's first record as the most successful debut album of all time with 4 #1 singles.

Maureen "Mau" Marcelo's first of 3 songs during the finale performance on the first season of Philippine Idol was Mariah Carey's "Love Takes Time." It was her own song choice. Mau received a standing ovation from the audience for her 3 finale performances (the 2nd song was chosen by the judges, and the 3rd song by Sony BMG Philippines executives, to become her first official single). Mau cites Mariah as one of her major inspirations and idols, and she also dreams of performing a duet with her foreign idol. Mau sang the Mariah ballad on Dec 9, and today, Dec 10, it was announced that she won the competition, with over 36% of the votes (the Top 3 competed in the finale, unlike in other versions of the Idol where only the top 2 compete in the final round). Friends One Minute, Enemies The Next...Frenemies!
Mariah Carey & Janet Jackson

Janet, 40, was reportedly jealous that her beau, Jermaine Dupri, helped produce Mariah's The Emancipation of Mimi CD, which sold a whopping 10 million copies. Meanwhile, Janet's new Dupri-produced album sold less than half a million in its first month. And fuel was added to the fire when a friend of Mariah said, "Mariah thinks if Janet can sell more records, she'll believe it when it happens." Yikes! Thankfully, Dupri is trying to make peace between the two big-time divas by getting them to work on a duet together. Good move!

"As for Xmas music, even though people might see me as a girl living in the past (don't care), Mariah Carey's Xmas album is still a jewel, otherwise, Harry Connick Junior's is as sweet as a Candy, Take 6 also… Well, I’ve said earlier I'd stop talking."

Lara's new single "Aime" is due out on December 18th. You can listen to an exclusive sample of it here.

Mariah Carey battles porn star over stage name
Posted by Adi on Friday, 08-Dec-2006, 9:41PM EST
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Grammy-winning pop singer Mariah Carey is trying to block porn star-turned politician Mary Carey from trademarking her similar-sounding stage name, saying that fans could get the two performers confused.

But the adult film actress, whose real name is Mary Cook, said on Friday that she would not be intimidated by the international superstar and will press forward with her trademark application.

"I'm ready to battle Mariah over this because I've been Mary Carey for a long time," Mary Carey told Reuters. "It's kind of funny because I'm a porn star and I've been being myself for a long time. I think she's being silly."

The star of such films as "Double Air Bags 11" and "Boobsville Sorority Girls," she started using the stage name Mary Carey in 2002 and once ran for California governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger, filed the trademark papers earlier this year.

In October, a lawyer for Mariah Carey sent Mary Carey's representatives a letter threatening legal action if she did not withdraw the application.

"MARY CAREY and MARIAH CAREY share the identical surname and have first names that are very similar," attorney Robert Becker wrote. And in part because the porn star was seeking the trademark for audio and video recordings, he said, "Confusion between your client and her MARY CAREY trademark and our client and its MARIAH CAREY trademark is therefore likely."

Becker also demanded that Mary Carey use her name only for "adult entertainment" and that she not sing or perform music.

"This is a technical procedure to stop a trademark registration. Mariah Carey has no affiliation with Mary Carey," said Mariah Carey's spokeswoman, Leslie Sloane-Zelnik.

David Beitchman, a lawyer for Mary Carey, said he believed Mariah Carey stood little chance of winning.

"My first thought was, does Mariah Carey realize what her lawyer is comparing her to and are they seriously concerned?" Beitchman said. "Do they seriously think the fans are going to be confused?"

Mariah Carey, who suffered a brief career slump after dominating the pop charts during the 1990s, had a major comeback with last year's "The Emancipation of Mimi," the best-selling pop album of 2005. She won a Grammy for the single "We Belong Together."

Mariah On The Cover: People 1993 and CD Review 1994
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 08-Dec-2006, 6:33PM EST
Mariah Journal's On The Cover section has been updated to include scans and articles from two old magazines: 1993 People Weekly and 1994 CD Review. Thanks to Amanda for sharing them with us!

People Weekly, November 22, 1993 Issue
How Sweet It Is
Carey has been hearing sour sounds from critics ever since she first came octave-surfing onto the scene three years ago with a voice that could swoop from operatic highs to warm, moaning lows. Her 1990 debut, Mariah Carey, sold 6 million copies and won two Grammys. Two follow-ups also moved like Big Macs: Emotions (3 million sold since 1991) and Unplugged (2 million since '92). While one critic called hers a transcendent talent, others find her vocal style showy. Another likened her lyrics to "hackneyed high school poetry" set to music.

Then there has been the issue of Carey's mentor, Sony Music president Mottola, who plucked her out of anonymity when she was 18 and spent almost two years - and lavish sums - nurturing her talent. Industry insiders say he treated her like a hot-house flower, sequestering her in recording studios and limiting her public appearances and press exposure. READ MORE -->

CD Review, December 1994 Issue
Voice of Power
"I'm telling my stories in my own way," she says. "Not everything has to be soul-searching, gut-wrenching, heart-rending. I'm not going to kill myself digging in night and day for that inner pain. If I did, I think it would be too heavy. I would hurt people, and I would hurt myself. I'm not ready for it."

What Carey is ready to tackle is Christmas music. And the mere thought of Carey lending her voice to a collection of Christmas standards rings so true and logical that you almost have to question what took so long for it to happen. Upon exploration of her new Columbia disc, simply titled Merry Christmas, the answer is clear. This project is more than a seasonal release for Carey - it's an event. READ MORE -->

LA Times' Advice to Britney: "Become the next Mariah"
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2006, 4:41PM EST
One of the recommended New Year's resolutions for Britney Spears from pop music mavens:

Resolution No. 2: "I will become the next Mariah Carey, not the new Michael Jackson."

There's plenty of ways to approach a comeback, but not all of them are wise. "I think there will be ridiculous expectations on that first single no matter what she does," said Jay Frank, chief of programming for Yahoo Music. "So I think she just needs to get that single out and move on with life…. That would be better than trying to come back with some grandiose, full-blown album."

Frank said the model should be Carey, who was written off and responded like the Rocky Balboa of divas. "She walked away, stayed low-profile and just worked really hard." Carey also embraced a leaner, contemporary hip-hop sound. The result: Grammy nominations and the second-best selling CD of 2005.

Related Story from E! Online:

Britney's Emancipation Proclamation?

First - after she starts wearing underwear again - she should sign on with Carey's team. And I'm told she's already working on that. I hear the 25-year-old former pop princess recently met with Carey's high-profile manager, Benny Medina, about the possibility of teaming up.

Medina, who many believed was the inspiration for Will Smith's character on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has been credited for Carey's reinvention and Tyra Banks' ever-expanding empire. Also on his roster: Simple Life star Nicole Richie.

Medina did not get back to me by deadline, and a rep for Spears said she did not know whether a meeting had or had not taken place.

Aspen Peak Magazine: "Carey-ed Away"
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2006, 1:26PM EST
Despite a hectic travel schedule and an endless to-do list, globetrotting superstar Mariah Carey always makes her way back to Aspen.

Megastardom does not come without its hard work, passion, generous spirit, and quest for new and creative outlets… at least for Mariah Carey. The singer, songwriter, actress, and soon-to-be fragrance maker is on the go, on her way to Aspen, and has no plans of slowing down.

ASPEN PEAK: You recently wrapped up your US tour for your CD, The Emancipation of Mimi, and you’re already heading for Japan. How are you feeling?
MARIAH CAREY: This is usually my vocal rest day. I just did a couple of shows back to back. I don’t speak between shows, but this is my favorite magazine! I’m on my way to the airport, heading for Japan, and that tour is close to three weeks. I just came from Phoenix, and we had a slight party afterward, which I don’t really do. Right now, it’s all about the plane ride and silence.

AP: So this US tour was the first time you traveled by tour bus….
MC: I loved it. Everybody was laughing at me, like, “Yeah, right. You’re so never gonna do that.” I know I have this diva thing, but I really did like it.

AP: How was the experience overall?
MC: I had a lot of private time, which I don’t usually. My apartment in Tribeca is really big and there are people around all the time. This was cozy. It felt like I had more independence. My dog Jack had his little nook. He has become a celebrity in his own right—he was nominated for two Relly awards [from Live with Regis and Kelly]. The funniest part is that he’s taking the tour bus home right now.

AP: How does this tour compare with ones in the past?
MC: In my opinion, it was the biggest and best tour I’ve ever done. We had great supporting acts. Sean Paul opened up the first half of the tour. Busta Rhymes did the whole West Coast. It was great having them out there. The crowd was so diverse—from 14-year-old girls to 24-year-old hip-hop guys to older married couples.

AP: How many people tour with you?
MC: We had about 78 people, 13 trucks, and eight buses.

AP: I hear you’re going to South Africa in December with Oprah when she opens a new school for girls. How did this come about?
MC: Oprah sent me an invitation. I had been to the Legends Ball as well, which was amazing and one of the most—no, the most—fabulous event I’ve ever been to in my life. The luncheon and the special care and time she took for her guests were amazing. And this trip should be an incredible piece of history, so I’m looking forward to being there. It’s an honor and privilege to be invited.

AP: You’ll be in Aspen for Christmas—how were you introduced to the town?
MC: I’ll be there… for Christmas Day. I love the lead up to Christmas. I’ve been going [to Aspen] since about 1997. I went to Telluride first, which was cool and pretty.

AP: What do you plan to do here?
MC: I’m not a great skier at all. I take one run and ski in an outfit that’s cute. The point is that I love having a white Christmas. I love the vibe of Aspen… not necessarily the whole paparazzi-celebrity thing, which is cool, but I do stuff like going on sleigh rides with friends. We go all out to really have the most lovely Christmas and to relive my dreams of being a kid. Being out in Aspen is always so amazing and picturesque. I have a sense of feeling at home there.

AP: Are there any places you go every year?
MC: I usually go to Matsuhisa—I think it’s my favorite of all the Nobu restaurants. I’ve seen Chef Nobu there more than I’ve seen him in Japan. I’m usually at Joan Boyce’s jewelry store. I like Piñons. Their salad is my favorite.

AP: Back to the slopes: Do you ski only on Aspen Mountain?
MC: I’ve been to Snowmass. I think it’s easier for skiers like me. I don’t want to sit here and talk about how bad I am, but here’s the problem—I’m not an early-to-rise person. I really like to sleep, so by the time I get to the slopes, it’s always like the last run, so if I go to a snowboarding class or something, I’m not going to get much time in. I might as well ski one run and call it a day. But this year I’m going to try to go snowboarding. I haven’t gotten past the “fall on your buttocks” stage yet, so I’m waiting for that to happen.

AP: But you’ll have your friends here to look out for you.
MC: Yeah. I’ll have friends and extended family here. I have a friend from England who’s coming and in and another from Sweden who’s been a friend since the 10th grade.

AP: Do you stay in the same place each year?
MC: I try different places, but I really would like to have a place in Aspen one day. I’m a very specific person. I built the place where I live now, and I’ve built places before. I kind of like things to be exactly how I like them. We know what that process takes… a billion years and a billion dollars!

AP: Would you like to live in town?
MC: I think something on the outskirts would be cool, but I could come in if I wanted to. I really like the serenity, and it looks like something out of an incredible painting. It’s so gorgeous. It’s not just about celebrity moments there. It’s about fun. I actually go tubing all the time.

AP: You once worked with a charity and brought children here from Denver, who were living in an orphanage. Will you do that again this year?
MC: I’m trying to. It’s a lot of fun, and Christmas is obviously about giving and sharing. If that means your time and creating a fun environment for kids, I think that’s something everyone should try to do. It’s really important for me to give back. I feel I’ve been so blessed. Last year we went ice skating [with the kids], which is pretty funny to watch. It’s like watching me ski.

AP: Do you hike when you’re here?
MC: Sort of, kind of. I don’t think it would qualify in a hiking manual. I go on walks near where I’m staying, which usually has wooded areas and brooks.

AP: Where do you want to stay this year?
MC: I don’t know yet, but it has to have a hot tub. I like to get out of the hot tub and roll in the snow. Someone told me that was a tradition in Aspen, but maybe they were lying to me. It’s a tradition for us to have Santa Claus-looking bikinis, jump in the hot tub, and roll in the fresh snow.

AP: So after the week here, and then South Africa with Oprah, what’s next on your agenda?
MC: I’m working on a movie that I’ve been really excited about called Tennessee, produced by Lee Daniels, who was the producer of Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman.

AP: What’s your role in the film?
MC: I play a waitress who is a down-home country girl. It’s an ensemble piece and a nice role. The story is about two brothers who are on a journey to find their estranged father.

AP: When will the film be released?
MC: The goal is before Christmas 2007.

AP: You have a lot in front of you.
MC: Another big priority is a fragrance I’m launching with Elizabeth Arden. It’s the first time I’ve ever done a fragrance. It’s been an amazing and creative process. You sit down with the “juice” companies, and then they show you the different scents. You then compose the scent. The process was very similar to writing a song. The fragrance is almost done, and next is the bottling and then the marketing campaign. The fragrance will come out in conjunction with a new album, which I’ll start working on right after Christmas.

AP: Is there a working title?
MC: There is, but I can’t tell you right now!

AP: You’ve had an amazing success with The Emancipation of Mimi. You must be very proud of it.
MC: I’m really proud of winning the BMI Songwriter of the Year, and Song of the Year awards… it meant a lot to me. Unless people see you sitting behind a piano or strumming a guitar, they don’t recognize you as a true songwriter, which I consider myself to be first and foremost. A lot of people don’t realize that.

AP: Quite a year, right?
MC: The whole time I was just really looking forward to coming to Aspen.

A Merry Mariah Christmas?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2006, 12:55PM EST
From TMZ.com's I Just Gotta Know!:

Will Mariah Carey ever do another Christmas album? --Paul

Paul, Mariah's reps weren't immediately available to comment on this, but we could all use some new Christmas music from the diva. It's been more than 10 years since we heard some holiday cheer from Mariah; hopefully she has something up her sleeve for next year!

In related news, did you know that when it comes to charity, she's one of the most influential celebs? Although she's very modest about it, Camp Mariah, founded in 1994, continues to be a getaway for 300 boys and girls each summer!

Mariah, Filthy Rich Celebrity Mogul

We all know the stats: most successful female artist in music history, 85 million albums sold, 17 number one singles, $80 million record contract. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

But these days, Mariah has proven she doesn't have to sing a single note to make a pile of bank notes. How? She's undertaking a startling number of high-heeled business schemes including one surprising venture - in the vineyard.

Andy Serwer, Fortune Magazine: "Mariah Carey's got kind of a different little business angle going on and it involves fine wine. She found this bottle of wine called Mariah in this vineyard in Northern California and tasted it and liked it."

Michelle Lee, In Touch Weekly: "She actually decided to contact them and they're now in talks to possibly create their own authentic Mariah Carey wine."

And vino is just one of the new businesses Mariah's been diving into this past year because in 2006, the Carey co-branding machine kicked into high gear.

Michelle Lee, In Touch Weekly: "For the first 16 years of Mariah's career she really did not get involved in any businesses besides her music career. In 2004, she hired Benny Medina who is the genius business manager behind J.Lo's huge empire. Flash forward to 2006 and she started to brand herself everywhere."

Everywhere indeed. Mariah's got a signature jewelry and accessories line for teens called Glamorized that could net her an estimated $5 million annually. And a hotly anticipated brand of intimate apparel called Mariah Kiss Kiss. Based on similar lines, it could one day be worth more than $75 million. Plus she's got a forthcoming fragrance from cosmetics giant Elizabeth Arden that could mean big money for years to come. And in the '06, she's putting her name on one product that is undeniably Mariah - the first ever tanning cream made with 24-carat gold. Finally.

Michelle Lee, In Touch Weekly: "Every night for Mariah's show, she insists that somebody spray her with the special sunless tanning lotion that has this 24-carat gold flux in it so she has a special glow with her when she's on the stage. So now Mariah has taken that into her own business and she's actually gonna market this to the public."

Ryan Schinman, CEO, Platinum Rye Ent.: "With this 24-carat gold tanning line, she's what it's about. She's about glitter. She's about gold. It's not just about ponies and rainbows with her. She's about bling."

But Mariah's sweetest partnership in the past year? In the Fall of 2006, she inked a deal with razor giant Gillette to lend her famous gams to their massive Venus Legs of a Goddess ad campaign.

Alle Fister, Shopbop.com: "It is not disclosed how much the deal was for but apparently it's an estimate if you wanna take out a $1 billion insurance policy on her legs."

Gold tan cream, razor ads, vino - what's it all add up to? A whole lot of extra spending money for Miss Carey. Mariah's recent branding deals have helped push her fortune to an estimated $300 million.

There has been no confirmation whether Mariah will attend tonight's Billboard Music Awards or not. Nevertheless, she is nominated for the "Female R&B/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year" award and is up against Beyonce and Mary J. Blige for said honor. Tune in and find out if Mariah comes out victorious tonight at 8:00pm ET on Fox. The awards show is also available for live streaming starting at 7:00pm ET.

Let's keep on voting for Mariah! Click this link or the button on the sidebar to vote for Mariah's "Shake It Off" as your Favorite R&B Song at the People's Choice Awards.

In the magazine insert of Corriere della Sera, the leading Italian newspaper, Mariah is featured alongside Jennifer Lopez for this week's Gold Peacock (best-dressed) and Gold Turkey (worst-dressed) awards. Sadly, Mariah (pictured in her maroon "Wish Icon" ensemble) got thumped with the Gold Turkey award by the magazine saying she looked like a "Zampone" (pig's trotter stuffed with seasoned mincemeat).

Mariah is mentioned in the following articles:
Entertainment Weekly's chart flashback, a review of Billboard's Top 10 for the week ending Dec 4, 1999. 1. "Smooth," Santana feat. Rob Thomas. So, it's hard to find a decent Top 10 in the '90s, Flashbackers. It really is. I look every single week for a list that contains at least two songs that don't make me want to put chopsticks in my ears, and I am generally unsuccessful. (Not to mention how hard it is to find a chart without Mariah Carey or Puff Daddy on it; good grief, am I ever sick of those two.)

Observer-Reporter: All radio stations are getting into the spirit earlier. By Thanksgiving week, 19 of the top 100-played songs were Christmas tunes. (Just one, though, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey, was being downloaded on i-Tunes in mass quantities.)

The Heights: Some simple suggestions that will get you in the holiday spirit. Tunes. While you are decorating, put some music on such as "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey. I guarantee it will turn into a karaoke/sing-a-long session.

Hampton Roads: Shawn Padgett, his wife and their two children spent more than a week adding the hardware to their already impressive yard decorations. Then he painstakingly programmed the lights to blink in sync with his favorite holiday tunes - Wilson Phillips' " Hey Santa! " along with U2's "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" and "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey.

Yesterday on VH1 Europe, Mariah was featured in a special called "Top 10 Mariah" in which they ranked her Top 10 biggest hits: (missing 10), 9 - Emotions, 8 - Fantasy, 7 - Through The Rain, 6 - Vision of Love, 5 - ABMB, 4 - Without You, 3 - We Belong Together, 2 - All I Want For Christmas Is You, 1 - Hero.

Mariah is mentioned in the following articles:

OCRegister: Vermani Collezioni, a luxury women's clothing manufacturer, recently moved its headquarters from New York to Irvine, California. It counts singer Mariah Carey as one of its best-known customers.

Digital Spy: The X Factor's heavy favorite and leading contender Leona Lewis sang Mariah's version of "Without You" at last night's show. Here's what Judge Louis had to say about her performance: "After that performance I think the UK has found itself the new Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, something we haven't seen for a long time. You're going to be a big star."

The Day: At the 8th annual Holiday Lights Parade Saturday in Groton, Connecticut, music from the WBMW-FM106.5 van got the crowd dancing by playing Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You."

El Paso Times: Inappropriate attire may sabotage your career. If your dress shows cleavage, if it is more than 5 inches from the knee, if it shows any bare skin between the shoulders and hips, you are probably not on the right track. Of course, we need to take into account body type, height and weight. What looks good on one person, may be totally wrong for another. Office parties are not the time to dress up like Mariah Carey.

New York Post: Up to now, Anguilla has been known as the playground of entertainment world titans, such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion - which could also be the attraction.

Star-Telegram: "Diva" might be the most misunderstood word in the music world. The term, which literally means "goddess," has been sullied to describe the likes of Cher, Beyonce and Mariah Carey. Divas are commonly thought to be egocentric sirens, singers more concerned with getting a bigger dressing room than giving their listening public musical thrills and goose bumps.

News From Turkey

In the December 2006 issue of the Turkish music magazine, Dream, there is an article about music stars and their movies; and Mariah is featured.

Mariah Carey - When A Diva Flops
Our snow white Mariah Carey, firstly starred in "The Bachelor" but made her actual debut in 2001's "Glitter." What a debut! The movie had a similar story to Mariah's life but is considered as one of the worst movies of all time.

The film featured songs that were written and performed by Mariah herself and the soundtrack with the same name was also released in 2001. Unfortunately, the album shared the same fate as the movie. However, Mariah did not give up, she worked hard and finally found another movie she could star in.

In "Tennessee", Mariah is going to be portraying a poor but a helpful waitress who assists two brothers, one of them with cancer, to find their father. With a plot that resembles old Turkish movies, the movie is considered for release around 2008."
