E=MC² is Echoes' 3rd Best R&B Album of 2008
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 31-Dec-2008, 12:15PM EST
Echoes, the only R&B/soul music publication left in the UK, placed E=MC² at #3 in its review of the best R&B albums of 2008 (scan here). T-Pain's Thr33 Ringz and Estelle's Shine were at #1 and #2, respectively.
Mariah Carey: E=MC² If you wanted to sample what quality contemporary R&B/pop music should really sound like at its best, Mariah's 11th studio album, which featured more typically playful anthems like the singles "Touch My Body" and "Lovin' U Long Time," was a perfect guide. On a well-balanced LP she proved once more that there's no one else in the game that can test her vocals.

You can purchase the "Right To Dream" single at iTunes, Amazon or Zune. And be sure to also request the song at radio!
Below are scans from the January 5, 2009 issues of Us, Star and In Touch weekly magazines.
To the right, watch a video of John Mayer covering Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" live at the WPLJ Benefit at Blythedale Childrens Hospital in Valhalla, New York on Dec. 22, 2008.
American Idol season 3 finalist Diana DeGarmo also covered "All I Want For Christmas Is You" during the "American Idol Stars in Concert for the Holidays." Click here for a video of her rendition of Mariah's classic at the Idols' holiday concert in West Palm Beach, Florida on Dec. 17, 2008.
From New York Daily News's "Making A-list, checking it twice" article: "But Mariah Carey was the true silver belle, upping the diva ante during a lavish Aspen Christmas with hubby Nick Cannon. Kate Hudson's son, Ryder, gets an honorable mention for hitting the Colorado slopes in a kicky camo snowsuit, but who can compete with Carey's furry Dior boots and Cannon's matching scarf? Sorry, kid - maybe next year."
Some old new news from UK's Daily Star: A few years ago, Mariah Carey scooped the rights to Marilyn Monroe's classic movie The Prince And The Showgirl. She wants to turn it into a West End stage spectacular when time permits. The diva told us: "I like the idea of doing it but it's all down to the time - you have to commit for a rather long time and now is really hard for me. But it's a dream that I want to achieve in the future."
British singer and songwriter Adele Adkins mentions Mariah in an interview with New York Times: "She [Leona Lewis] reminds me of Mariah Carey (she probably doesn't like hearing that), but Mariah Carey was my life when I was younger. She's an icon."
"Forever" is on the iTunes' playlist of Melody Thornton of Pussycat Dolls. She wrote: "I love her version of this song. She's amazing."
Thornton has always been a big Mariah fan. In a Q&A with the Pussycat Dolls at AOL Music Sessions back in April 2006, when asked what was the first album she ever owned that made a big impression on her, she replied: "My first album was Mariah Carey's MTV Unplugged and I still listen to it on a regular, to this day. (And you played it the other day. Over and over.) All the time. I met Mariah and she was great and I really, really, like it's amazing when you meet someone with that much like (charisma), yeah. She's done this before. She's like blah-blah-blah talking to me and then I was like just couldn't talk and when she left us I was like crying for an hour. It was crazy. It was great! She said, 'Don't mess up my body make-up.' That's what she said!"
Latin singer Fanny Lu has "We Belong Together" on her iTunes playlist and says, "!De mis voces favoritas del mundo¡" ("One of my favorite voices in the whole world!").
LaMont Jordan, running back for the New England Patriots, in an Up Close interview with The Providence Journal: "In heavy rotation on my ipod: Well, I don't have an ipod, I have a Discman... but Little Wayne, Joe Budden, the Mariah Carey Christmas CD. That's pretty much it."
Mariah makes New York Daily News' Top Entertainers of 2008: MAY: Mariah became a missus - again. Carey, 39, surprised everyone when she wed Nick Cannon, 27, in a hush-hush ceremony in the Bahamas. The couple sealed the union with matching tattoos and a 17-carat ring reportedly worth $2.5 million.

Philippine Star entertainment reporter Ricardo Lo listed his interview with Mariah in Tokyo in June 2008 as one of his "Hollywood Highs of 2008": "In Tokyo, Mariah Carey made the Asian press wait for more than five hours but it was worth it because she turned out to be very charming, putting her arms around your shoulder during a picture-taking and cooing, 'Are you sure this is for me?' as you handed her a copy of The STAR which carried our first interview (in Hong Kong)."
The X Factor cover of Mariah's "Hero" is the 2nd best selling single in the UK for 2008 with sales of 751,000 copies.

Mariah Carey Still Not Pregnant
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 29-Dec-2008, 8:09AM EST
Despite rumors, Mariah Carey is still not pregnant.
In the last few days there have been more reports of light work out sessions, ultra sound tests, all kinds of things. There more reports of "booties" being knitted than Carey's famous "booty" ever got.
Alas, I am assured by those close to her that still, no baby is in sight. Carey and young hubby Nick Cannon have been on vacation in Aspen and St. Bart's. But photographs of Carey, who hasn't been shy about getting in front of the cameras, reveal still a flat stomach on a pretty well toned body.
"It's all still just rumors," a Carey insider told me over the weekend. Of course, the light work out sessions could be because Carey is trying to get pregnant and just isn't there yet. That would make sense.
So again, don't log on to the Tiffany baby registry quite yet. Give Mariah some time!
E=MC² is Detroit News' 8th Best Album of 2008

Detroit News lists E=MC² as one of the Top 10 albums of 2008.
8. Mariah Carey, "E=MC2": Everything that worked on her 2005 comeback LP "The Emancipation of Mimi" works even better here, with Carey melding the worlds of R&B, pop and hip-hop more seamlessly than ever before.
Sony Pictures recently uploaded the video to your right on YouTube which features commentary from the director and stars of You Don't Mess With the Zohan on Mariah and her cameo appearance in the film. Adam Sandler also offers his humorous take on Mariah and Nick's relationship. Check it out!

Adam Sandler: "Mariah Carey, you know her, you love her. She's a beautiful woman. Beautiful voice."
Dugan: "And then we have a scene with her in her dressing room afterwards which is very funny."
Rob Schneider (as Safim): "For me, the perfect woman without a doubt is for sure Mariah Carey. She is... [making suggestive gestures] to try to explain, she's a very, you know, special woman. And sweet and talented and just so, you know, good person."
Sandler: "I think this is the reason she fell in love with Nick Cannon. She knew I was married and Nick was the next best thing. Congratulations Nick on being in love... (in character) with the talented Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey [laughs]."
You Don't Mess With the Zohan is now available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

The Long & Twisted Road... With Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 26-Dec-2008, 7:22AM EST
by Chuck Taylor
What a storied history I have with Mariah Carey. In 13 years at Billboard, only a handful of anecdotes bear repeating... when Vanessa Williams proved face to face to be the bitch she now deliciously plays on "Ugly Betty;" when Clive Davis came after me, knives sharpened, for dissing Rod Stewart and Justin Timberlake (complete with a hand-signed letter that hangs at home); and digs at Mariah, actually credited, in part, for her temporary insanity in the New York Post.
In another time, Billboard indulged single reviews that were less than complementary. As singles reviews editor since 1998, my reputation was forged on delicious venom: If I loved a song, you got the sweetest embrace, but established artists that took a misstep were demonized. So when Mariah turned toward hip-hop, I attacked, writing several just plain mean reviews.
Meanwhile, Mariah was the first artist I had the pleasure of meeting when I started at Billboard. Around Thanksgiving 1995, my Billboard muse Larry Flick took me to her Madison Square Garden TV special taping, where we met her. It was magic.
The photo below really tells the story here. After so many rude reviews, Ayhan and I attended a Z100 concert and, with all-access credentials, squeezed into Mariah's dressing room--and eek, there she was with some guy named Randy Jackson, who, of course, is now the renowned "American Idol" judge. Mariah comes forth, I introduce myself and she announces, "I know who you are." Pause. I say, "Are you gonna hit me?" She laughs, and I launch into a diatribe about my reviews that, to this day, I'm convinced was inspired by angels. I say something to the effect of, "You know, I have followed your career since the beginning, so when you disappoint, I hold you to the highest standard. I expect nothing but the best, given what I know you're able to achieve."
Her response: "Really? Oh, thank you," with total sweetness. Then we posed for the pic here... Of course, I was never again able to write a negative word, given Mariah's humility. Fortunately, she came back with "We Belong Together," rediscovering melody, making my job much easier...
Now Sony has released "Mariah Carey: The Ballads," an album I adore... Ah, the memories... the good times... the '90s... and then the third meeting with Lady M, with Kristina in 2007. Amen!

International Media Covers Mariah Carey in Aspen
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 25-Dec-2008, 3:25AM EST
Aspen gets a big jolt of international publicity during this time of year and the resulting coverage forms the perception of the resort for millions around the world.
The popular and successful singer Mariah Carey is in town this week and she is increasingly becoming associated with Christmas in Aspen.
The New York Post reported Wednesday that Carey's new husband Nick Cannon just bought her a $5 million pad in Aspen - complete with diamond jewelry in each room.
Meanwhile, dozens of other media outlets reported that the couple was strolling through downtown Tuesday displaying Carey's finer attributes.
Photos of the 38-year-old Carey in Aspen wearing large red apres ski boots from Dior and a red down jacket - zipped strategically down over her ample chest - were featured on the Web sites of many newspapers and celebrity sites.
The China Daily quoted Carey as saying "We go in the hot tub in our Christmas bikinis, then roll in the fresh snow and jump back in the tub. I usually wear a red bikini with a Santa hat."
Carey, who has been visiting Aspen for several years in a row, is also on the cover of Redbook magazine's holiday issue and tells the magazine: "I don't really do up my New York apartment for Christmas; I save everything for Aspen. The house there is all done up with lights and bells - not over the top, but quaint. It's like a gingerbread house."
Carey may be Aspen's lead celebrity this time of year, although Penny Parker of the Rocky Mountain News noted on Christmas Eve that regular Aspen celebrities - Jack, Goldy, Kurt and George - were also in town for the holidays, along with academy-award winning actress Hillary Swank.

Mariah Mention in UK's More! Magazine
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 23-Dec-2008, 3:31PM EST
The X Factor winner Alexandra Burke mentions Mariah in an exclusive interview with UK's More! magazine, January 5, 2009 issue. The Friday Night Project host and entertainment reporter for More! Alan Carr conducts the interview.
Alan Carr: Let's talk about your best moments of the series then. Britney? Alexandra Burke: I think it was a really good performance for her first comeback. She got really slated and I feel sorry for her. She seems like a genuine, nice person. Alan: And you had Mariah on as well. I thought 'Hero' was a bit flat and i think you sang it better than her. Alex: No comment! So you've met Mariah? Alan: Yes, she was a lovely girl. Alex: I thought she was reserved and kept to herself a bit. Alan: Yeah, she never lets her guard down. We spent the night with her. She invited Justin Lee Collins and me to her party. It was amazing. She dances a lot to the music in her head! Alex: (Laughing) I love Mariah so much but I wanted her to be a bit more... Well, I felt like it wasn't her. I felt like she was told what to do, maybe. Alan: When she was on The Friday Night Project, she came on and I just really wanted to mother her and be like 'Are you alright?'. Alex: Her people have to make sure everything's perfect because of who she is. She's not a diva. No way. I read in the paper that they knocked through a room at The X Factor studios for her to have a bigger room. It's not true. She'd say hello to us in the corridors backstage. Britney? She never said hello. Mariah was warmer - which was nice.

MTV has "Touch My Body" and "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" (featuring T.I.) at #19 and #28, respectively, on its list of Hottest R&B Singles of '08.
"Touch My Body" is #69 on New York's Z100's Top 100 Songs of 2008.
Mariah is #71 on Maxim's Hot 100 of 2008. Full list here.
Billboard's music chart expert Fred Bronson names his favorite Christmas songs in this week's Chart Beat Chat: "Totally off the top of my head, my all-time favorite Christmas recording would be "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey. I also love all of the tracks on "A Holiday Gift for You," the legendary album produced by Phil Spector, so let's put all of those songs in second place, especially the songs by Darlene Love, the Ronettes and the Crystals, followed by "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" by Wizzard.
UK's The X Factor winner Alexandra Burke sang "Hero" at The Sun-sponsored "The Millies" (Military Awards) on Dec. 16. You can watch a video of her performance here.
On the Dec. 17th airing of The Late Show with David Letterman the main guest was Jennifer Aniston who is promoting "Marley and Me" but as she walked onto the stage the Late Show Orchestra and Paul Shafer played Mariah's "Touch My Body" via a house band instrumental. You can watch a video here.
Last Friday, a listener requested "All I Want For Christmas Is You" on a Belgian radio show, Qmusic. The DJ called the man names in Dutch and refused to play the song. Only after his female co-host asked him to play it did he finally agree. The radio DJ is Wim Oosterlynck, he works for www.qmusic.be.
Fountains of Wayne singer and guitarist Adam Schlesinger co-wrote the songs for "The Colbert Report"'s holiday special, "A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All." But what other holiday tunes does he dig? "I really like the Mariah Carey song, 'All I Want for Christmas is You.' I don't know who wrote that. That's a great song. Maybe she wrote it, but that's a fantastic Christmas song. I like a lot of Christmas songs; there's some good ones: 'We Three Kings.' That's a good one." Metro.
Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Lisa Scottoline: "Growing up, we always played the same three Christmas CDs: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Charlie Brown. And, of course, I bought that Mariah Carey one so that I could listen to "All I Want for Christmas Is You" on repeat every year through most of the '90s."
Kanye West is going to have to wait a bit longer if he wants to see in the nearby windows of Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. Construction appears to have stopped at 56 Leonard, where the star reportedly reserved one of the $4 million-$21 million apartments, and sources tell us the financial crisis has caused the pause. New York Daily News.
"O Holy Night" - Why it's popular: The triplet meter of this 19th-century French carol, which has more than 20 new versions, make it easily adaptable to a classic R&B feel. That, plus its operatic flourishes, make the melody a perfect showcase for pop divas such as Celine Dion and Mariah Carey and those who aspire to their status. USA Today.

"Touch My Body" #20 on VH1's Top Videos of 2008
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 20-Dec-2008, 2:13PM EST
Last night, VH1 counted down its Top 40 Videos of 2008. Mariah's 18th #1 song, "Touch My Body," made it on the VH1 list at #20.
"Touch My Body" #20 on VH1's Top 40 Videos of 2008 [ Download here ]
Mariah Carey is super-talented, super-hot and super-rich so she's not allowed to have a sense of humor, right? Wrong. Mariah gets high comedy marks for her biggest music video of '08. "Touch My Body," it's number 20.
Joe Levy, Editor-In-Chief, Blender Magazine: "I'm pretty sure this is a song that explains itself in the title. And it is like a parody of every Mariah Carey video ever made."
Alison Becker, Host, VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown: "So Mariah's having some computer difficulties. She kind of calls the geek squad over."
Dave Holmes, Writer/Comedian: "And it's Jack McBrayer from 30 Rock and he gets on her laptop and starts to fix it while she goes away and does something, and he kind of falls asleep and fantasizes about her."
Seth Herzog, Comedian: "Jack's fantasies are pretty G-rated. He's playing Guitar Hero, they're playing Laser Tag."
Tim Stack, Entertainment Weekly: "You add in a lady with boobs and it's nerd-porn."
Shirley Halperin, Entertainment Weekly: "This really shows a self-deprecating side of Mariah. It's really nice to see that she's got a sense of humor."
Lifehouse: "I really think that she took a chance making a humorous video. I think she nailed it." "I fantasize about playing Laser Tag with Mariah like everyday."
San Jose Resident Wins Mariah Carey Gown Contest
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 20-Dec-2008, 9:11AM EST
A big coup for a fashion designer is to have a celebrity wear his or her creations on the red carpet. And for an unknown designer, it could be the few seconds needed to launch a career.
Julian Contreras of San Jose is hoping for just that after a sketch of a gown he created for Grammy-award singer Mariah Carey was selected by Carey as the grand prize winner in a contest that drew 4,023 entries. Contreras' sketch will be transformed into a dress and worn by Carey at an event early next year, said Ashley Futak, a spokeswoman for Brickfish, a social media marketing company that sponsored the contest.
"Being a designer has always been my dream since I was 5 years old," said Contreras, 20, a Lincoln High School graduate and fashion student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. "I just can't believe I won."
Contestants were asked to create a dress that would incorporate Carey's new fragrance, Luscious Pink, and the singer's signature butterfly logo.
Contreras drew a form-fitting, mauve pink gown with an asymmetrical shoulder strap decorated with a sparkling pin. Carey last week raved about it on "Entertainment Tonight."
"It's a really, really great design," she said, while pointing to the sketch on the show. "I love a one-shoulder and I love the brooch here and how it's drapey on the top."
The grand prize means the Luscious Pink dress Contreras created will be made three times: once for the singer to wear, once for Contreras to keep in his own collection, and once as an auction item at a benefit for Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer awareness.
"I wanted to design something that would show off her figure and enhance her curves," said Contreras, who still lives in San Jose. He said it wasn't yet clear when Carey would wear the dress, but it's expected to be completed in the next three months.
There's No Throwing Aretha Franklin
Posted by Casey on Saturday, 20-Dec-2008, 1:50AM EST
Aretha Franklin performed "Touch My Body" once again during a holiday benefit concert for members of the military at the NOKIA Theatre in New York City on Sunday, December 14th. However, this time, the Queen of Soul struggled a bit with the lyrics.
"Can somebody tell Mariah I can't sing that stuff? 'Wrestle me around'... 'throw me on the floor'? I don't think so. You know, you'd have to go home if you come here with that. You'd have to get on up out of here."
As you may recall, Franklin also covered the song during a concert at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC on Wednesday, October 22nd (see here).

Sony Promo for The Ballads: Sing with the Diva
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 19-Dec-2008, 1:23PM EST
As a promotion for Elvis Presley Christmas Duets album, Sony BMG Music Entertainment has created a Web site that allows you to record "Blue Christmas" as a duet with Presley, singing McBride's part from the album.
The site provides a phone number and access code so you can belt out your lines over the phone. If you're pleased with the recording, you can send it in a Christmas ecard.
The promotion has been successful enough that Sony plans a similar one for Mariah Carey's upcoming release The Ballads for Valentine's Day. Given Carey's vocal range, it could take some serious chops to keep up. "Dreamlover" anyone?

Mariah is IDJ's Best-Selling Artist of 2008
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 18-Dec-2008, 2:34AM EST
Universal Music Group (UMG), the music group that the legendary Doug Morris built into an empire is still a resounding #1 in new-release share, registering an essentially flat 34.5%.
The biggest contributor was Mel Lewinter's Universal Motown Records Group (UMRG), which made a dramatic jump from 3.9% to 6.5%, with the year's biggest seller in Lil Wayne, at 2.8m. Sylvia Rhone's slam dunk wasn't the only jaw-dropper though, as Monte Lipman's Universal Republic hit the trifecta: Jack Johnson (#5, 1.5m) Taylor Swift's 2007 album (#6, 1.4m) and her new Fearless (#10, 1.3m), as the young Country superstar hits the last weeks of the year with tremendous momentum. That gives UMRG four of the Top 10. Universal Republic's Colbie Caillat, who broke last year, continued strong in 2008 with another 730k, for a total of 1.9m in a significant breakthrough.
L.A. Reid and Steve Bartels' Island Def Jam (IDJ) was flat at just north of 5%, with its biggest sellers being Mariah Carey (#13, 1.2m), Rihanna's 2007 release (#16, 1.1m this year alone), Rick Ross (#34, 690k), Ne-Yo (#36, 675k), Young Jeezy (#39, 660k) and Kanye West (#52, 600k), whose December sales will put him in the thick of it. IDJ's revived Mercury label, under David Massey, hit the ground running with Duffy (#48, 620k).

Mariah Carey bests Elvis Music purists probably wouldn't equate Mariah Carey with legendary acts such as Elvis and the Beatles, but when it comes to chart-topping records, she's now outstripped the King -- and she's on pace to take down the Fab Four. Carey's 2008 single, "Touch My Body," made music history this year when it surpassed Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most No. 1 singles in the modern pop era. The cut was her 18th No. 1 song. The Beatles have 20 No. 1 singles.
She is also listed on VIBE's "The 80 Best Songs of '08" at #71 with "Touch My Body."

The M Factor Round 2: "Millenium Mariah" Week
Posted by Casey on Monday, 15-Dec-2008, 12:17PM EST
It was an exciting first week of our competition, The M Factor, as the Top 12 finalists sang their hearts out to be one step closer to victory. Unfortunately, we must bid farewell to 3 of the contestants (Cidalia Castro, John Carlton and Juan Fath) who were either unable to meet deadline requirements or chose to no longer compete. However, the show must go on, as they say, and this week our Top 9 are fired up and ready to go!
ROUND 2: "MILLENIUM MARIAH" WEEK Last week, we allowed The M Factor hopefuls freedom to choose any original song from Mariah's catalog to audition with. This week, we tossed them a more challenging task by asking them to select a song from one of the four albums Mariah released after the turn of the century (Glitter, Charmbracelet, The Emancipation of Mimi or E=MC²).
VOTE NOW, VOTE OFTEN The poll is now open! Each of the contestants are depending on your support to remain in the competition and advance to the Semi-Finals next week. Voting for this round will conclude on Sunday, December 21st at 12:00pm! The results will be revealed on Monday, December 22nd.

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" is Top-Selling Holiday Ringtone

Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" Is Nation's Best-Selling Contemporary Holiday Ringtone For Third Consecutive Year With Cumulative Sales Topping 1.8 Million
Currently the nation's #2 ringtone from any genre, Mariah Carey's yuletide classic, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," is topping the holiday ringtone charts for the third year in a row with cumulative sales to-date of more than 1.8 million copies. The best-selling seasonal ringtone of all-time, Mariah's holiday gem became the very first seasonal Mastertone to be awarded an RIAA certification in 2006 and was awarded an RIAA platinum certification last year.
"All I Want For Christmas Is You" was first heard as a key track on Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas album. Originally released in 1994, Merry Christmas has gone on to become one of the top-selling holiday collections of all time, selling more than 11 million copies worldwide while earning 5x platinum certification from the RIAA.
The ongoing impact of Mariah's yuletide perennial has inspired one of this year's hottest new seasonal ringtone releases from Legacy Recordings: a So So Def Remix of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" featuring Jermaine Dupri and Bow Wow.

California Girl Gets To Meet Superstar With Help Of Macy's "Believe" Campaign, Make-A-Wish Foundation
It's the stuff of a great Christmas story. If you've ever been to New York at Christmastime, you know that Macy's "Santa Land" is a big attraction, with thousands of children lining up to meet Santa each year.
But this year, people have been visiting Macys' stores across the country for another reason: to send letters to Santa as part of the company's "Believe" campaign.
For each letter received, one dollar is donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, an organization that helps grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
And on Friday, Early Show viewers saw the foundation's work in action.
Nine-year-old Angelina Salaiz came all the way from Union City, Calif., and her special wish came true: she got to meet superstar Mariah Carey.
Angelina got to interview Carey, and Carey told co-anchor Julie Chen her thoughts on her own music!
Carey's latest single is "I Stay In Love," which was directed by her husband, Nick Cannon. Her latest album, "E=MC2," is over the platinum mark in the U.S.
The film "Tennessee," in limited release, features a song Carey wrote for the movie, "Right To Dream." Carey plays a waitress and budding singer in the film.

You'd be forgiven if that was your first thought, because this album disappeared almost as fast as "Glitter" after she became Mrs. Nick Cannon. But it deserved to stay around longer. Like its predecessor, "The Emancipation of Mimi," it has the right mix of party jams, torch songs and touching ballads.

Tour Plans Scrapped Due to Rumored Pregnancy?
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 11-Dec-2008, 5:21AM EST
Rumor Mill: Mariah Carey's pregnancy has forced her to scrap plans for an upcoming tour, says an insider. "Costume designers and dancers were all called Wednesday and told the tour is off," said the snitch. "Most were hysterically crying because they were relying on her for a paycheck this holiday season." A rep for the songstress said "a tour was discussed, but nothing was confirmed," adding: "I have not been told she's pregnant."

Fan Reviews/Photos: Tennessee in L.A.

This past weekend, Mariah Daily Journal was on location at the Laemmle Theater in Los Angeles, California where Mariah's new movie, Tennessee is being screened all week for Academy qualification. Below are photos, and experiences of some of the fans we met.
KELLY "Pleasantly surprised and happy for Mariah of her performance in Tennessee. Without giving too much away, 'Right To Dream' is the perfect outline of Mariah's character 'Krystal Evans' and the journey of the movie. Definitely listen to 'Right To Dream' after watching the movie and you shall see what I mean, hopefully it is considered seriously and will get a nod from the Academy. I thought Mariah was consistent in her role, as a battered, yet hopeful curvy waitress from Texas. I forgot I was watching Mariah play a role, but more or so intrigued by Krystal. I loved her strength, thoughtfulness, and resilience; despite her own bleak situation. The film was beautifully shot, great scenery and cinematography. This movie made me laugh and cry; I was left wondering and caring about the characters' lives. I definitely want to see it again. Glitter what? Mariah was good and she can act. I was a bit skeptical before watching tonight's showing, but after watching it, with the right direction and great writers, Mariah can easily have a continual film career, definitely over her husband lol. I hope many will go out and see the film now and when it's officially released. Bravo Lee Daniels. I cannot wait to see Push."
ALBERT "First off, I'd like to thank Honey B. Fly for the pair of tickets, and MariahDaily.com for an autographed poster of Mimi! My first impression of Tennessee, from reading the review, was that it would be a simple heart-warming tale with lots of music and joy. After the movie, many were sobbing and crying. Yes, Tennessee is that powerful. Mariah, as we all know, plays a waitress, Krystal. She joins 2 brothers, Carter and Ellis, who are on a journey back to their hometown in Tennessee, to find their estranged abusive father. Their father is their only hope for a desperately needed bone marrow transplant for Ellis. The theme of Tennessee is to pursue your dreams while you still have a chance, and to forget the past, for all you have is now. Tennessee took several unexpected turns and was unpredictable; a trait which made this film incredible! I have to commend Mariah, her acting has much improved, and the film blends music without a cheesy tone. The film's primary song, 'Right To Dream,' truly deserves an Oscar nod. I hope you all catch a screening."
Note: For our L.A. fans who haven't seen the movie, purchase your tickets at the Laemmle box office or online! The film will conclude its one-week Academy qualifying engagement on Thursday, December 11th. Don't miss out on the opportunity to see Mariah in her finest performance ever!

Mariah Sighting in L.A.

Rumor Mill: Mariah Carey's wish may finally be coming true. Spies in LA saw the songbird coming out of a well-known ob/gyn's office on North Crescent Boulevard, "clutching what looked like a sonogram and being greeted by her entourage with cheers. She was ebullient." It was the same type of paper that Minnie Driver was holding when she found out she was pregnant at the same doctor's office. Carey, who wed Nick Cannon this year in a quickie Bahamas ceremony, has made no bones about wanting a child. A rep said, "As far as I'm told it's not true."

The Grammys had a lot of snubs (as usual), but this year something is definitely off. Mariah Carey's historic No. 1 single, "Touch My Body," was shut out of the R&B field. That's especially odd considering how weak the nominations in the R&B field are this year. Again, it is being speculated the voters eliminated some higher profile artists from competition so the unknown artists could win. The Envelope.

Hi Keith, I would like to know how does Billboard determines the Artist of the Decade.
I was reviewing some articles about Mariah Carey and I found one that says Billboard uses the same methodology for Artist of the Decade that they do for yearly top pop artist list.
However I would expect this to have changed since then since Billboard revises its methodology to reflect the times. Can you clear this up for me? Quinn Michaels, Chicago Illinois
Hi Quinn, You're referring to when we gave Mariah Carey the Artist of the Decade award at the 1999 Billboard Music Awards?
We compiled the list of the top artists of the 1990s using a recap point system that combined chart performance data from the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. This system awarded points, based on a complex, inverse relation to chart position, for each week a title appeared on the pertinent charts. The decade recap reflected chart performance from the start of 1990 through the end of the 1999 chart year.
I'm unsure what you mean by your methodology question. When we did our recent all-time Hot 100 anniversary charts, we did have to look at how the Hot 100 was compiled over the past 50 years and take that into account. You can read more about that here.
But, for the 1990s recap, that was printed in our Dec. 29, 1999 issue (which resulted in Carey getting her award on the Billboard Music Awards TV show that year), we didn't have to do a Hot 100 50th-like computation to come up with the list.
Oh, and here is the roundup of the 10 top pop artists of the '90s:
1. Mariah Carey 2. Janet Jackson 3. Garth Brooks 4. Boyz II Men 5. Celine Dion 6. Madonna 7. TLC 8. Whitney Houston 9. Michael Bolton 10. Toni Braxton

"Geese do it. Swallows do it. And on this song, when the club gets lame, Mimi does it - heads for warmer climates/flyer after parties. All the while, Danja's airy beat ingeniously mimics her upper-octave trills."
And in Yahoo! Music's Chart Watch, Mariah is #8 on Paul Grein's 40 Most Popular Christmas Albums of All Time.
8. Mariah Carey, Merry Christmas, 4,937,000. This 1994 smash features the zesty "All I Want For Christmas Is You," which just this week became the first holiday song to sell 1 million downloads. Carey released the album in between her blockbusters Music Box and Daydream.
NAACP Holds Private Screening for Tennessee

Mariah signing autographs at NAACP's Tennessee screening [Video]
Last night at the Laemmle Music Theater in Los Angeles, members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) were treated to a private screening of Tennessee, and with no less than Mariah gracing the event!
Kyle gives us a recount of what went down at NAACP's Tennessee screening.
"One of the CEOs for the NAACP spoke to us and gave us the rundown of what we should expect for the night. The theater was very small and intimate and there were only a few people so we had a chance to really see Mariah up close. The movie was about an hour and a half long, and Mariah's acting is superb! I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge fan, but she's come a long way since her role in Glitter. She really got into the character.
There was a Q&A after the screening. Some of the questions asked were directed to producer Lee Daniels and Mariah. Lee said that Mariah was very warm and friendly and they had to fill her up with Arby's everyday so that she'd gain the weight for the role in Tennessee. I had asked Mariah and the director how they were able to keep the fans and public at bay while filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico, because it isn't everyday that Mariah Carey walks down the street in New Mexico. He said that Mariah is just so loyal and sweet to her fans that at times it became a problem and they had to remind everyone 'Hey, we need to finish a movie.' Someone also asked how long it took for them to film the movie. Lee said it only took 7 weeks, but the processing of actually getting to the point of filming took years. They were also asked about their new film Push, where Mariah plays a social worker and Lee Daniels directing it."

Mariah at Grammy Concert Afterparty

Mariah Carey, hanging out with Nick Cannon following her performance on the Grammy Award nomination special. The singer and her hubby headed to Club Nokia for the official afterparty, celebrating the Grammy Museum's grand opening. And while Carey was low-key, her husband was possibly the most enthusiastic guest at the party. An onlooker says he could barely stay seated (in the VIP section) during a performance by The Time, snapping along and mouthing all the words. Later in the show, Cannon put his arms around his wife and serenaded her, singing along with the band to their song "Gigolos Get Lonely Too." Nearby, Janet Jackson, in a tuxedo-like outfit, stuck close to Jermaine Dupri.

There's More to see in 'Tennessee' than Mariah Carey

Sweet story about brothers with pretty pictures and a glam-free Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey and "Oscar-qualifying run" may strike you as a jarring association, but her new movie, "Tennessee," opens today for a one-week engagement to put the film into consideration.
Into consideration for what, you might ask. Those who remember Carey's stink-bomb star turn in "Glitter" might be a little gun-shy about any kind of Mimi movie, even one, like "Tennessee," that isn't a vehicle for the diva.
Apparently, what the filmmakers are hoping for (or are contractually obligated to hope for) is consideration for Carey's song "Right to Dream," a pretty, acoustic number she co-wrote with Willie Nelson and sings in "Tennessee." Academy voters have nominated dozens of songs less distinguished than this one, and, who knows, if the movie's producers are willing to pony up some free food and photo ops, maybe Carey can score a Golden Globe nod.
As for the movie itself, "Tennessee" is a low-key, sentimental road movie about two brothers looking to lick wounds from the past and start anew. It's well-acted and contains dozens of beautiful, wide shots of wintry landscapes and will probably satisfy anyone who winds up checking it out when it goes (almost direct) to DVD next year.
Brothers Carter (Adam Rothenberg) and Ellis (Ethan Peck) left their Tennessee home as teenagers, sick of suffering abuse from their alcoholic father (Bill Sage). Many years later, Ellis falls ill with leukemia and the boys must return home to see if dear old dad might be a bone marrow match for the younger brother.
All this happens before the opening credits have ended. Fortunately, the movie doesn't heap on much more tragedy after that, settling into a meandering, sweet story of brotherly love. Carey shows up halfway through, playing a world-weary Texas waitress who leaves her own abusive relationship behind to join the brothers on their trip to Tennessee.
Carey is appropriately dolled down and dialed down here, though she makes a rather startling transformation when she enters a singing contest in Nashville. It's hard to decide what's more impressive - the guitarist and harmonica player who instantly learn Carey's song without any rehearsal or the fact that Carey does a complete hairstyle change in less than two minutes before hitting the stage.
Maybe the makeup artist deserves an Oscar, now that we think about it. We'll rest well tonight, knowing the work has qualified.
Note: As previously mentioned, Mariah Daily Journal will be on location this weekend for the L.A. screenings of Tennessee (times listed below). We will be holding trivia contests and giving away exciting Mariah prizes. Also, our cameras will be there capturing fans' reactions and comments about the film. Join us and support Mariah's new movie!

Related News Stories: Second big disaster: not a single nomination for Mariah Carey or anything from her "E=MC2" album. Not even a throwaway nod in R&B. Just an outright, across the board snub. What's worse: they put Carey through the agony of participating in the Grammy live telecast last night and then giving her nothing! [...] Of course, there may be more to the snubs than meet the eye. In the cases of Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey, it could be a punishment for appearing on the American Music Awards last month, and accepting awards from them. There has long been an unwritten rule that if an artist did anything with the AMAs, owned by Dick Clark Productions and considered a minor rival, the Grammys wouldn't allow you on their show. What happened on the AMA's: Keys won two "favorite album" awards there, and performed the show ending blockbuster, her "Superwoman," with Queen Latifah and opera diva Kathleen Battle. Carey took home an honorary lifetime award and sang the hell out of "I Stay in Love." (Fox News)
It's Grammy time again, and each year there are a few nominations (or lack thereof) bound to leave music fans baffled. No mentions of Mariah Carey or Taylor Swift during Wednesday night's concert event, though both appeared on the show. And although Alicia Keys got three nods, including one for her duet with John Mayer, "Lessons Learned," her album didn't make the cut in the major categories! Take People's poll: "What Is This Year's Biggest Grammy Snub?"
In the past, Mariah Carey has won such prestigious awards as best new artist and best contemporary R&B album. She even opened the Grammy nomination special Wednesday night. This year, her "E=MC2" was shut out of major categories. But she wasn't the only R&B star to go unrecognized in top categories by Grammy voters. (Los Angeles Times)
Mariah Carey and her backup dancers refused to be disheartened by the current economic climate. Carey's Christmas-themed opener featured all the trappings of excess, including fur-trimmed-mini-dresses to shiny red shopping bags. Proving that nothing comes between a diva and her diamond-studded microphone. (The Envelope)
Mariah Carey, looking very Nancy Sinatra-ish, sang "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" in red jumper and white boots. Great song and Carey sang the heck out of it. But where's Darlene Love, who sang the spectacular, Phil Spector-produced original? Love is alive, well and still performing. How about a duet, at least? How cool would that've been? (Chicago Tribune)
Mariah Carey, who received no noms for her "E=MC2" album, opened the evening a bit stiffly, singing the Phil Spector-produced Darlene Love classic "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." (Variety)

LA Times Names "Right To Dream" As Best Song Contender
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 03-Dec-2008, 2:52PM EST
Finding music worthy of an original song nomination wasn't much of a challenge the last two years. As evidence, three selections from "Enchanted" were nominated in 2008 and three from "Dreamgirls" in 2007. But in early summer, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences altered the rules, allowing only two songs per film to be nominated, thereby ensuring that voters will have to dig -- at least a little. And that may be harder than it sounds. This year hasn't produced an Eddie Vedder-penned soundtrack ("Into the Wild") or a bevy of light pop tunes from singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche ("Dan in Real Life"). That's not to say some front-runners haven't emerged. Here's a look at some of 2008's notable film songs.
Bruce Springsteen's "The Wrestler" Jenny Lewis' "Barking at the Moon" Mariah Carey's "Right to Dream" M.I.A. and A.R. Rahman's "O . . . Saya" Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman's "Down to Earth"
Mariah Carey's "Right to Dream." In need of a guitarist for "Right to Dream," Carey aimed high, going straight to country legend Willie Nelson. Written for "Tennessee," in which Carey plays an aspiring singer, "Right to Dream" is restrained elegance, with some light, finger-picked guitar flourishes and a dash of late-night soul. "I was humming different melodies while I was on the set and stuff," Carey says. "I was just thinking that Willie Nelson would be somebody fabulous to collaborate with. I reached out to him, and we met after one of his concerts."

Singer Ryan Adams: "E=MC² Is Sick"

With his latest masterpiece, Cardinology, out earlier this year and his opening slot for Oasis kicking off today, 2008 has been nothing short of fantastic for the always enigmatic Ryan Adams. However, never one to abide by standard rules, the singer has offered not ten, but nine of his favorite albums of 2008. Mr. Adams has got a little something for everyone - metal, indie rock and some essential Mariah Carey.
"Mariah Carey's [record E=MC²] is sick. Still so sick. She's just like Common -- bring another one out [and] just do it because she's got the ideas... she's got great flow."

Mimi, One of TIME's Top Ten Comeback Albums
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 02-Dec-2008, 12:38PM EST
TIME looks back at the most notable comeback albums of recent decades. Below is their Top 10 list, and what they had to say about Mariah.
Top Ten Comeback Albums American Recordings, Johnny Cash Bat out of Hell II, Meatloaf American Idiot, Green Day Judy at Carnegie Hall, Judy Garland Private Dancer, Tina Turner Time Out of Mind, Bob Dylan Graceland, Paul Simon Smile, Brian Wilson The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey Californication, Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey Oh man, was Glitter bad. It was such a flop, such a disaster that Mariah Carey's label had to pay her in order to kill their contract. Charmbracelet, her 2002 follow-up, was not much better. So while 2005's Mimi may not have had very high expectations, it bowled over the naysayers like a diamond-studded billy club. Produced by a myriad of studio stars -- including Kanye West, Jermaine Dupri, and The Neptunes -- the album debuted at #1. The hit single "We Belong Together" made Carey the third most successful singles artist of all time (behind Elvis and The Beatles) and the most successful female one ever. We think that qualifies as a comeback.

Rumor Mill: Nick Buys Mariah a Ski Lodge
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 02-Dec-2008, 5:19AM EST
Rumours Mariah Carey's marriage is on the rocks are way off piste... her comedian hubby Nick Cannon has splashed out £1 million on a luxury five-bedroom chalet for her to go skiing in Aspen.
An insider said: "Nick is clearly still in the honeymoon phase. He's shocked all their pals by going out of his way to nab Mariah this beautiful sanctuary. He doesn't want her to go to the hassle of renting. He knows Aspen is one of her most favourite places in the world so this is his early Christmas present to her."
We're sorry to ruin the surprise for Mimi but Nick has also bought the I Stay in Love with You singer a diamond ring to put in each of the rooms. Looks like Mariah's not the only moneybags in the relationship.
Battle of Star Fragrances: Mariah at Close 2nd
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 02-Dec-2008, 4:24AM EST
These days you're not an official pop star unless you have a scent to sell. But are any of them worth sniffing, let alone buying? We put Britney, Christina, Mariah, J.Lo and Jessica to the test right outside our studio in Times Square.
The Thread team hit the pavement for a little market research armed with bottles of Mariah Carey's Luscious Pink, J.Lo's Deseo for women, Christina Aguilera's Inspire, Jessica Simpson's Fancy and Britney's Believe.
We asked a cross-section of women and some semi-willing men for their opinion on each fragrance and we're happy to report the debate was intense. Would you expect any less on the streets of New York?
Brand loyalty played a surprisingly small role. A devoted J.Lo fan dismissed Deseo in favor of Inspire, even though Christina's voice "gives her a headache." Meanwhile presentation mattered more than we expected. Mariah's butterfly-topped bottle looked "Barbie-like, in a good way" to one young woman. She thought Britney's multi-faceted crystal casing looked and felt "like a weapon."
Next we set up our ballot box in the Planet Hollywood store so people could officially vote for their favorite. Since we'd heard every opinion under the sun, and since we'd smelled so much perfume we could barely tell one from the next, we honestly had no idea what to expect at the end of the day.
Here... drum roll please... are the totals, in ascending order: J.Lo's Deseo was the least popular by a pretty wide margin. Jessica Simpson's Fancy came in fourth. Britney's Believe took the bronze. And Christina's Inspire edged out Mariah's Luscious Pink for the top spot but only by a nose.
