Mariah & Nick Enjoy Christmas in Aspen
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 24-Dec-2012, 2:40PM EST
All Mariah Carey wants for Christmas is family time in Aspen! The singer, hubby Nick Cannon, and their adorable twins Monroe and Moroccan are all spending the holiday season in the wintry city, and she posted a bunch of photos on Instagram for her fans to see all the fun. In one pic, Carey is nuzzling her 20-month-old daughter Monroe as she sits in a director's chair emblazoned with her famous mother's initials and signature butterfly. In the background, a Christmas Nativity scene can be sitting on a table. 'Merry Christmas!!! - From MC - MC,' she wrote on Thursday.
Earlier that day, Carey posted a silly pic of her 32-year-old husband dancing in front of their Christmas tree in his sweats Ö and her lamb slippers (the singer's fans are called her 'lambs'); Behind him, reindeer statues decorated a long coffee table and garland and white lights were wrapped around the wooden staircase.
The American Idol judge, 42, also managed to sneak in a little last-minute Christmas shopping. She was spotted by herself perusing a Gucci shop and another local jewelry store while wearing a fur-lined white parka vest, tight jeans, and wedge suede boots.
After the holidays, it will be back to work for Carey. The 12th season of Idol, which also features new judges Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, premieres January 16. She's also been hard at work on her 14th album, which is due to be released in March. "I'm collaborating with a lot of my favorite people but the main thing is [that] I'm not trying to follow any particular trend, I want it to be well received,' Carey has said about her new songs. 'I want to stay true to myself and the music that I love and make the fans happy.'

The Year In Chart Headlines Billboard gives a chronological look back at the biggest chart headlines of 2012.
Dec. 22 Eighteen years after its release, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is a top 40 hit on the Hot 100 at last. The carol, from Carey's 1994 album "Merry Christmas," re-enters the chart at No. 29, a new peak position (and rises to No. 25 this week). "Christmas" didn't reach the Hot 100 upon its original release, as it was not then available as a commercial single; per rules at the time, such tracks were not eligible for the chart. The song did, however, rise to No. 12 on the Radio Songs survey the week of Jan. 7, 1995, marking the highest rank for a holiday song in the chart's 22-year history.

Uncle Murda Discusses Working With Mariah
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 15-Dec-2012, 6:31PM EST
Rapper Uncle Murda was recently interviewed by ExpensiveInterview and he talked about collaborating with Mariah on his record "The Warning." Check it out below:
Shout out to Mariah - that's family right there. Mariah was actually a fan of the "Bullet Bullet" record that I had put out. And um, I guess one day she was in the club with Angie Martinez and she was like um, you know "Bullet Bullet" came on and she was like "This is my favorite record that's out right now. Angie's like "What? 'Bullet Bullet'? Uncle Murda? Your favorite record?" Angie said that on the air, then I hooked up with Mariah and it was on after that! But you know, God bless Chris Lighty - he was also managing her too at the time he was managing me. And then he was talking to her, "You know I got Uncle Murda over here." She said "What, I love Uncle Murda!" She was doing something for Macy's at that time. I think she had her perfume thing going on at Macy's. And then she told Chris, "Yo, bring Murda through with you." Went over there, me and her met, then it was on. Shout out to Nick Cannon too.

Mariah: "I'm A Crier"
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 13-Dec-2012, 5:39PM EST
Forget about the feud — the new season of FOX's American Idol is all about Mariah Carey and her tears.
"I'm a crier," Carey told reporters during a press event on Wednesday.
Mimi's revelation comes just weeks after the network released a new promo of Idol, which showed the new judge shedding tears while talking about mentoring young minds.
The 42-year-old singer, her fellow judges Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest, are currently in Hollywood filming new episodes of Season 13.
"I think the most surprising thing is how attached you can get to a contestant," Carey also said on Wednesday.
"It's like, if I disagree with the rest of the panel, it's almost like, at this point, ‘No, don't lose that person!'"
In filming the season so far, Carey said she's had to overcome her fear of saying no.
"I try to give them constructive criticism and then say no, because if ultimately they're gonna do this, they need a little guide along the way."
As for that feud with Minaj, gossipmongers will have to look elsewhere for juicy new details.
"I really think it's all about the judges and the interaction and what each of us think... I think it's going well, it's about the kids, it's about the contestants."
The new season of American Idol will premiere on FOX Jan. 16.
People: Has Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey's Feud Fizzled?
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 13-Dec-2012, 3:21PM EST
Fans hoping to see new American Idol judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj battle it out in an epic feud may be disappointed. The new panelists, along with host Ryan Seacrest, took a break from filming Hollywood week to chat with the press on Wednesday, and by (almost) all accounts season 12 is steeped in mutual admiration, sunshine and rainbows.
Despite her and Carey's heated exchange during auditions in Charlotte, N.C., Minaj had nothing but kind words for her fellow judges.
"We've jelled really, really well as a group," she told reporters. "We have a great chemistry. We have a great rhythm now together, and we really are taking it serious... We really are rooting for the contestants and we want to find a great American Idol."
For Idol veteran Randy Jackson, that means he'll play the hard-to-please role vacated by Simon Cowell.
"Nicki is mad funny, and Mariah is mad funny, and Keith is very quick-witted and funny," Jackson said. "We're all kind of silly, but I guess maybe I'm the harsh one. I'm the quickest to say no."
Keith Urban happily boasted about the "synergy" that he has found with his "very different" costars and admitted that his reported role as referee is really nothing more than keeping his fellow judges focused on the task at hand.
"I'm just trying to bring the drama down so that we can stay on point," he told PEOPLE.
Seacrest said the drama has a way of working itself out. "I don't really have to play peacekeeper," he said. "The peace finds itself. They find the peace... eventually"
But Carey, resplendent in a floor-length red gown and diamond earrings, hinted that perhaps the claws haven't been fully retracted. She heaped praise upon her long-time friend Jackson, called Urban an "expert" of country music and said of the group, "I think this panel is great because of the diversity." But she dodged a question about what Minaj brings to the show.
"You know, I wouldn't feel comfortable commenting on that," she said with a smile. "But thank you for the question."
"All I Want For Christmas Is You" Top Streamed Holiday Song
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 13-Dec-2012, 12:03PM EST
The Nielsen ratings agency checked under the tree (and online) to examine digital holiday music preferences and found that Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is apparently all pop music fans want to listen to on the Internet. The song is the most streamed of the season, with 662,000 plays, Nielsen reported.
On YouTube, the 2009 Christmas track has logged as much mileage as Santa's sleigh, with nearly 48 million streams. That doesn't include the 7 million listens for the version recorded in the "Late Night" music room with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots playing children's instruments such as a Fisher Price xylophone, ukulele and kazoo.
Mariah Had "Reservations" About Joining Idol
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 13-Dec-2012, 9:17AM EST
When she was just starting out in the music industry looking for her big break, certain avenues weren't available for a young Mariah Carey -- specifically, a show like American Idol.
So now that she's a multi-platinum recording artist sitting at the judges' table for the Fox singing competition, she looks at the contestants and empathizes with their journey.
"I get really attached to certain people for different reasons, whether it's a story or mainly the talent," Carey told reporters on Wednesday, as the competition was whittling down Hollywood Week contenders. "I see myself in some of the contestants when I first started."
Carey, who joined the panel this fall alongside Idol mainstay Randy Jackson and newbies Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, added that she isn't sure she would have put herself through the same scrutiny in her early years.
"I'm glad I didn't do a show like this," she said. "I would've hated it! I learned on stage how to perform and what I realized is the best advice for them is to just be themselves, because that's what really sells now."
With that said, Carey is fully present on America's most popular TV show. "It's a huge deal," she said. "This is massive. It's one of the biggest television shows ever. It changed the way we look at music and changed people's vocabularies. Pitchy? Thank you, Randy for that!"
As for her own role, Carey said she likes to think of herself "more of a fairy godmother" than a judge. Her method: "I try to speak frankly but as kind as possible," she said. "But not sugar-coating ... that won't do anyone any good."
What else does she bring to the judges' table? Three decades of wisdom earned through experience. Said Carey: "As a recording artist and producer and writer, [it's] helped me get to this point where I can sit there and say, 'I'm not sure if you hit this part correctly,' or, 'You weren't quite prepared to blend the harmony with this person singing way louder than you.' These things I’ve known for more than half my life."
Naturally, knowing how popular Carey's hits are among Idol hopefuls, we had to ask: what's it like to hear one of your own songs performed for you? "It's funny," said Carey of the approximately four contestants who tried it. "Sometimes I'm, like, 'What do I do if it wasn't the best performance?' But I treat it like anybody's song. One of them actually used a song from my first album, and it was obscure and took me by surprise." Ironically, she added, "It was the song when I almost sold my publishing. They wanted this song, and told me they would give me $5,000. Fortunately, I said no!"
When it came to taking Idol's offer, Carey explained that it was her husband Nick Cannon, host of NBC's America's Got Talent, who helped convince her. "He really wanted me to do this and I had my own kind of reservations -- I didn't know how I would adapt to this situation." she said. "But it's great to be here, I'm happy and honored to be here."
Mariah 'Shocked' at 'Certain' Judges Decisions
Posted by Angie on Thursday, 13-Dec-2012, 1:32AM EST
The new season of American Idol hasn't aired yet, but the judges have already spent enough time together to become 'a family,' as Randy Jackson referred the group on Wednesday, and every family comes with a fair share of disagreements.
"Sometimes I'm kind of shocked as to what certain people think should go through," said Mariah Carey, who described the new judges' panel as "quite varied." Mariah went on to clarify, "And sometimes we're all in agreement and it's obvious and there it is."
As no group of judges has been like-minded on every decision, the important thing is that they respect each other's opinion -- something Ryan Seacrest says they've excelled at.
"Last night I saw us all sitting at a round table after the auditions, having a good laugh and talking about what a great process this Hollywood week is going to be," Ryan said. "So far so good."
As far as what viewers can expect this season, Nicki Minaj promises "craziness," saying, "Sometimes I have two heads when I come on set, and you know what? That's how it's supposed to be."
American Idol's two-night season premiere airs Wednesday, January 16 and Thursday, January 17 at 8/7c on FOX.

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" Re-enters Hot 100
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 12-Dec-2012, 2:33PM EST
The singer's 1994 holiday chestnut returns at a new peak, as titles of any era are, as of this year, eligible to appear on the list if ranking in the top 50.
Eighteen years after its release, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 at last.
With airplay and sales for holiday hits increasing, the track, from Carey's 1994 album "Merry Christmas," re-enters the chart at No. 29, a new peak position. "Christmas" had logged one prior frame on the chart, reaching No. 83 the week of Jan. 8, 2000. It didn't reach the Hot 100 upon its original release, as it was not available as a commercial single in 1994; per chart rules at the time, such tracks were not eligible to appear on the Hot 100. The carol did, however, rise to No. 12 on the Radio Songs chart the week of Jan. 7, 1995 (the highest rank for a holiday song in the chart's 22-year history).
How does an 18-year-old song show on the Hot 100 alongside current hits (including those by Justin Bieber, who was not yet a year-old in late 1994)? Per current rules, any title, regardless of age, is eligible for the chart if it ranks in the top 50. Hot 100 rules changed at the beginning of the 2012 chart year to include titles of any era should they place in the list's top half; tracks by Whitney Houston benefitted from the revision following her February passing, with, most noticeably, her 1992-93 Hot 100 No. 1 "I Will Always Love You" returning and soaring to No. 3 in March.
Two other versions of Carey's modern-day Christmas classic charted on the Hot 100 before the original's return this week, both last year. Bieber's take (subtitled "Superfestive!"), with Carey, ranked at No. 86 the week of Nov. 19, 2011, and Michael Buble's ballad interpretation made a cameo at No. 99 six weeks later (amid a five-week reign on the Adult Contemporary chart).
Carey's original "Christmas" returns to the Hot 100 with digital sales of 69,000 (up 79%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It bounds 37-19 on Digital Songs and leads Holiday Digital Songs for a fourth consecutive week. (The song has sold 2.3 million download to date). On Holiday Airplay, "Christmas" receives Greatest Gainer honors, lifting 7-5 with 26 million in audience (up 17%), according to Nielsen BDS. It re-enters Radio Songs at No. 48. "Christmas" tops the Holiday Songs chart, which measures sales, airplay and streaming, for a third week in a row.
Aiding the song's momentum, Carey appeared on NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Dec. 4, performing a merry version of the song with Fallon and the show's house band the Roots on miniature instruments (including xylophone, bongos and wood blocks). A chorus of children added background vocals. The clip has racked 7 million YouTube views since its posting.
Upon her return, Carey claims her 34th top 40 hit on the Hot 100 (and first since "Obsessed" climbed to No. 7 in 2009). She breaks a tie with Connie Francis and Rihanna (each with 33) for the fourth-most top 40 Hot 100 entries among women. Madonna leads all female soloists with 49 top 40 hits, followed by Aretha Franklin (43) and Taylor Swift (39). Elvis Presley leads all acts with 80 top 40 Hot 100 entries (not counting his numerous hits that predate the chart's Aug. 4, 1958, launch).
Billboard.com's entire menu of charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs, Radio Songs and Holiday Songs, will refresh tomorrow (Dec. 13).

What better way to celebrate 12-12-12 than by commemorating 12 beloved hits that peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100?

Reviews: Mariah on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 05-Dec-2012, 12:30PM EST
The press is abuzz with excitement about Mariah's surprise appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where she sang an acoustic version of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" with Jimmy Fallon and the Roots, with the help of instruments found in a classroom. See below for reviews from various websites:
People: "Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas Is You,' can be heard everywhere during the holiday season, but you've never seen it performed like this before! Backstage before Tuesday night's taping of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Carey, her host and his backing band, the Roots, put a quirky spin on the pop star's holiday hit by performing the song using classroom instruments. Adding to the adorable factor: a quartet of kids who pop up occasionally to sing backup. Even with the unusual additions of a ukulele and xylophone, the song came together in delightful harmony. The Christmas tune is hard to improve upon, but Carey and friends might have created a brand new instant classic!"
LA Times: "Sometimes words are unnecessary, so skip the rest of this paragraph and click for instant joy. The messengers? Jimmy Fallon, Mariah Carey and the Roots, who got together prior to Carey's appearance on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' to do a version of 'All I Want for Christmas Is You.' The version is wonderful, and will light up the blackened hearts of the Grinchiest souls."
Rolling Stone: "Jimmy Fallon roped the Roots into playing a quirky version of 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' with Mariah Carey last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, performing the song on kid-sized toy instruments including xylophone, bongos, rattlers, wood blocks and more. A chorus of children chime in on background vocals and Carey takes it home with her untouchable voice."
VH1: "The schtick is good, and last night it got better when Fallon and company welcomed Mariah Carey and her adorable children's choir for what has to be the cutest rendition of Mimi's modern classic 'All I Want For Christmas is You' ever performed."
MTV: "Jimmy and The Roots accompany Mariah with classroom instruments you might find in a kindergarten music appreciation class. And did we mention there's an actual children's choir that pops up occasionally to add vocals to the chorus? And while all of this is happening, Mariah still werques her diva hand/'I'm singing an important note' move? Again, WE'RE STILL NOT OVER THIS, and we don't anticipate that we will be for a VERY long time."
ZAP2it: "It's Christmas time again, so you know what that means: Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is going to be playing everywhere you go. There's nothing wrong with that, but Jimmy Fallon recently put a new twist on a familiar tradition. He invited Carey, The Roots and four adorable caroling children to sing a new version of the song, and it's awesome. There's even a kazoo!"
Entertainment Weekly: "Give those Pandora and Spotify holiday playlists a break and turn to Jimmy Fallon, Mariah Carey, and The Roots for your morning cup of (non-alcoholic! or not) cheer. With classroom musical instruments and holiday sweaters in tow, a glamorously gown-clad Carey (you didn't think she'd seriously wear a sweater, did you?) joined the gang for a playful rendition of 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' yesterday on Late Night... The adorable children singing background and Carey's breathy high notes make the video irresistible. I don't know about you, but I'm taking a chug of eggnog anytime Carey sings that song on national television. Mariah early Christmas, everyone!"
Huffington Post: "As usual, she sounded impeccable. Maybe she can grace the American Idol audience with those world-class pipes of hers."
Gawker: "...The rendition she performed on last night's Fallon, alongside Jimmy Fallon, the Roots, and a chorus of actual children, is by far the best spin put on this thing since the Phil Spector-inspired original. Few people could pull off the classroom-instrument arrangement with the grace of the 'eternally 12' Mariah, and if there's any perfect time to act like a child, surely it is Christmas."

Randy Jackson Discusses New Mariah Album, Idol
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 04-Dec-2012, 12:14PM EST
Randy Jackson spoke with Billboard last week about his new guitar collection that will debut on HSN later this month. He also took a moment to talk about the upcoming new season of American Idol and about Mariah's new album. See related excerpts below:
Of course, the Jackson-affiliated product with the most riding on it is the next album from Carey, a follow-up to 2009's underperforming Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel. The project was preceded by the release of single "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" in August, featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill. Should it make the final tracklisting, "Triumphant" would be the first lead single from a Carey album not to chart on the Hot 100. The single peaked at No. 53 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and has sold 61,000 U.S. downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. An alternate "Vintage Throwback" mix of the song, however, went to No. 1 on the Dance Club/Play Songs chart, marking Carey's 16th No.1 on the tally.
You're returning for a season of big change at American Idol this year, with Mariah joining you on the judges panel as well as of course Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. What can we expect?
Idol starts up January 16 on the lovable Fox network, so I'm looking forward to that whole new panel and great, amazingly talented kids. We're about to do another audition. I don't know how but we find some really talented kids every season.
Going back to Mariah for a second -- when can we expect an album? We've got some hot new music, and there's gonna be a single some time soon. There'll be an album as well. We're talking about a world tour. There's a lot of stuff going on.
As you learned these last two years with Jennifer Lopez, having Idol as a platform during an album cycle can be really powerful. Was that the plan as well with Mariah?
For me, it's about Mariah being one of the greatest singers of all time. It's funny, these kids come on and they're trying to sing her songs in front of her. It tickles me, I just laugh. You got some bold kids out there today, man. She's making a very, very hot record, I'm really happy. It's gonna be a great 2013, dude, we gonna fire it up.
She's already worked with Rick Ross and Meek Mill. Any other collaborators you can confirm at this time?
[ Jackson's Publicist: I'm sorry, did you have any other questions about the guitars?]
Randy Jackson: The Randy Jackson Guitar Collection, dude. Best bang for your buck!

Mariah Carey Tops Holiday Charts
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 03-Dec-2012, 5:45PM EST
It's the most wonderful time of the year and Mariah Carey is celebrating all the way to the top of the charts.
The singer tops the inaugural Holiday Songs chart for 2012, which ranks the most popular seasonal songs, with her original song "All I Want For Christmas Is You."
From the cast of Glee to Justin Bieber to Michael Buble, it seems everyone has covered Mariah's classic from 1994 making it not only a popular holiday song, but the nineteenth best-selling digital single of the 20th century, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Last year, the song even held the top spot on the charts for four of the five weeks that holiday songs are tabulated by SoundScan.
Dec 2, 1995: Mariah, Boyz Begin Historic Hot 100 Run
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 02-Dec-2012, 7:19PM EST
Seventeen years ago today, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men began the longest reign in the chart's 54-year history, as "One Sweet Day" spent its first of 16 weeks (or, 112 sweet days) atop the tally.
The song bested the 14-week commands of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" (1992-93) and Boyz II Men's own "I'll Make Love to You" (1994). Since, four more songs have tallied a runner-up 14 frames at No. 1: Los Del Rio's "Macarena" (1996), Elton John's "Candle in the Wind"/"Something About the Way You Look Tonight" (1997-98), Carey's own "We Belong Together" (2005) and the Black Eyed Peas' "II Gotta Feeling" (2009).
"Sweet" was released from Carey's 1995 album "Fantasy." The ballad became her 10th of 18 Hot 100 No. 1s to date, the most among women in the Hot 100's archives.
MDJ Note: The correct name of Mariah's 1995 album is of course Daydream.

Johnta Austin on Collaborating With Mariah
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 01-Dec-2012, 9:42PM EST
Singer-songwriter Johnta Austin, who is currently signed to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def Recordings, was recently interviewed at YouKnowIGotSoul.com and he talked about working with Mariah and the song "Last Kiss." See below:
YouKnowIGotSoul: In the mid 2000's you had a lot of consecutive hits for Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige. Do you think that sort of success can be replicated or was it moreso the timing?
Johnta Austin: I think it's yes to both. It was definitely a lot of timing and just a perfect storm especially to have artists who were already legends before they even met me. To collaborate with them and have it come out, I think it was a perfect storm. It can be duplicated again, but I had no idea that those two songs for Mariah and Mary were going to be as big as they were. I thought they were hits and I was confident they would do well, but I don't think anyone can predict that kind of success as far as once you start getting the 14 weeks at number one, ASCAP Song of the Decade and Billboard Song of the Decade with Mariah. That's not anything anyone was saying in the studio that night when we were listening back to the record. We just knew it was a good record. I think that's the best way to approach it. History would be nice, but ultimately we just want to make a great product that we're confident in and ultimately it's the people who decide if it'll go down in history.
Regarding "Last Kiss":
Johnta Austin: Man, I wish that record would have been a single. I remember that process. The process with Mariah Carey and Jermaine Dupri is always fun because we're in there just throwing out the craziest lines. There are things that you would never think goes on in a Mariah Carey session, but she's super cool, laid back and fun to work with. We had the concept of the last kiss and after a few jokes and few glasses of Pinot Grigio. *Laughs* That's where "Last Kiss" came from.
