Mariah To Shoot Bar Scene at Nashville's Lyrix Club?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 28-Feb-2007, 3:45PM EST
At the Velvet Rope Forums, member and Nashville resident, CattyKitt writes:

"Just wanted to drop a dime on Nashville's club, Lyrix. My source let it slip that there will be a big surprise appearance this Thursday, March 1st. No press, no publicity, just a simple show like in the old club days."

It is believed that Mariah will be at Lyrix to "perform the original song in a bar scene set in Nashville and also sing an a cappella version of the country classic, 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' in the movie." (Ref: Country Music Television, MariahJournal Feb. 24 News)

Lyrix is located at 94 Peabody St., corner of 1st Ave. S. and Peabody St. in Nashville, four blocks south of Broadway.

MTV's Celebrity Flameouts
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 28-Feb-2007, 10:03AM EST
Britney Spears is certainly not the first celebrity to go off the rails in full view of her once-adoring public. But hers is one of the most spectacular falls from grace in recent memory, meticulously documented by paparazzi and bystanders, and uploaded instantly for the titillation of the masses.

As for the others... Tom Cruise, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Courtney Love, R. Kelly, Christina Aguilera, Michael Jackson.

Who: Mariah Carey

The Crash: One of the most successful artists of the 1990s, Carey began to lose momentum after she split from husband/mentor (also then-chairman of Columbia, her record label at the time) Tommy Mottola in 1996. Four years later, she signed a deal with Virgin Records - for a reported $80 million. Her first album under that contract, 2001's Glitter, was the biggest commercial flop of her career, and the accompanying movie was eviscerated by critics. Around the same time, Carey's public appearances became increasingly erratic and a series of bizarre messages on her official Web site created concern that she was suffering an emotional breakdown. Then, a dazed-looking Carey appeared on "TRL," handed out popsicles to the audience and stripped down to a pair of Daisy Dukes and a halter top. Soon after, she checked into a hospital to treat "extreme exhaustion" and took a break from public appearances. In 2002, Virgin bought Carey out of her contract for a reported $28 million.

The Comeback: Accomplished - all it took was a great album. While 2002's Charmbracelet helped her regain some balance, she came storming back with 2005's multiplatinum The Emancipation of Mimi. Bolstered by A-list material from hitmaker Jermaine Dupri, it was the year's best-selling album and earned the singer her 17th #1 single in the U.S. with "Don't Forget About Us," tying the record held by Elvis Presley.

Rating: 3 She's always been a bit kooky, but as long as her behavior doesn't overshadow her prodigious talent (and she's got songs worthy of it), her fans don't seem to mind.

Mariah Carey
At Home In Manhattan
It's Mariah Carey. She's here to prove once more that so much Glitter does not equate to so much gold.

Carey is opening up her heart and the doors to her 12,000-ft triplex apartment in Manhattan.

"In life there can be ups and downs," she opines. "You can't be happy every day, because then you wouldn't appreciate it."

For sure. And as Hello! nods at such sage words we wonder if Mariah would appreciate the vast splendour of her home in the sky more were she to be evicted and forced to live in a studio flat or a cardboard box?

But Mariah has known hardship. She tells us how she once owned only one pair of shoes; how she would look at her money and wonder if she hold have lunch or a ride on the Subway; how she starred in the film Glitter.

But what of her new movie? Against what looked like insurmountable odds (see Glitter) Carey is filming something called Tennessee.

But while Carey talks about that, Hello!'s eye wanders about her massive home.

There is a dressing room modelled on a scaled up version of Bergdorf Goodman's third floor.

There's the Marrakesh Room, so called because it is exactly the same size as Marrakesh. And the Mermaid room, which would be a great place for real mermaids to live in with a school of blue whales for company.

And it would have to be filled with water - something Mariah has tried. Hello! relives the horror of the burst water pipe and how Carey's home was, momentarily, transformed into the world's largest inland sea.

Luckily, everything can be restored. Things were put back together piece by piece. Carey's 1,000 pairs of shoes were placed back on their shelves in their racks.

The palace is rich with what Hello! calls "symbolism". Carey says the butterflies on the handcrafted fireplace symbolise freedom.

The climate-controlled closets in which clothes are cross referenced by colour, fabric and occasion are symbolic of a woman in tune with her past, reality and the streets many, many feet below her windows.

Mariah Carey's Diva Home
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 28-Feb-2007, 5:58AM EST
Mariah Carey would only sell her lavish apartment to another diva.

The singer, who lives in a 12,000sq ft three-floor New York apartment, says only a true star could live in such plush surroundings.

Mariah, who is famed for her outrageous demands, told Britain's Hello magazine: "If anyone ever buys this place, they had better be a diva or they can't live here."

The 'Glitter' star recently confessed she has four clothes closets in the apartment.

Mariah, who showed off her property on popular MTV show 'Cribs', revealed there was more storage space that the viewers didn't see.

She said: "I have four closets if you count storage. I live on three floors of a block in Tribeca, so I have space.

"There's one for lingerie, a shoe closet I designed with the architect Mario Buatta, and a pretty area for clothes with moving wardrobes and a bunch of shelves where I do fittings with stylists.

"The closets are a big part of my life, it sounds obsessive - but they are pretty fabulous."

Note: The above-mentioned interview appears on the March 6th issue of Britain's Hello! magazine. For fans in the U.S., the magazine is available at these outlets.

Pub Bar Lifts Ban on Mariah Fan
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 28-Feb-2007, 5:44AM EST
Mariah Carey fan Jeff Donovan, as previously reported, has been barred from his local pub for playing Mariah songs particularly his favorite, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" which was not limited to the festive period but played all year round on the jukebox 20 times a day.

Since the unexpected publicity and Jeff's incessant pleading to be allowed back in, Roy Danns, landlord of the Gordon Arms, has relented and lifted Jeff's ban under the condition that he undergoes a self imposed two-week ban from the jukebox.

And Roy is resolute: "If he plays another song constantly he will be banned immediately, no questions asked."

The Gordon Arms is now enjoying a much anticipated period of peace and quiet to the delight of both staff and customers. The Mariah Christmas track has since been removed from the jukebox to avoid any future anguish to patrons.

Tennessee in Tennessee Update: Currently Filming in Dunlap; Wednesday in Nashville
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 27-Feb-2007, 2:00PM EST
Hollywood comes to Nashville and singer Mariah Carey is the star.

Carey's last movie, "Glitter," garnered neither big box office numbers nor critical acclaim. She is, however, thinking good thoughts for her new Indie movie entitled "Tennessee."

In the film, Carey plays a waitress whose two brothers travel to Tennessee to find their dad.

Filming started Monday in Dunlap, Tennessee, outside Chattanooga. Cameras will start rolling in Nashville on Wednesday.

Producers tapped the 70-year-old Cardwell's Market on Hermitage Avenue near Riverfront Park for one scene. Owner and Metro Trustee Charlie Cardwell said filmmakers liked the old-school feel of his place.

Other locations include historic Second Avenue, honky-tonk packed lower Broadway, the Greyhound station, Printer's Alley, the Willow Street Railroad Crossing and the riverfront, where the new Sounds' Stadium is will be.

The filming will continue through Friday.
City officials said there won't be any street closures.

Mariah Not Rushing to Have Kids
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 27-Feb-2007, 10:39AM EST
Mariah Carey is "more or less" in a relationship right now, she reveals in a new interview - but doesn't name her beau, saying: "I don't talk about that anymore."

The 37-year-old singer does reflect on her ill-fated marriage to Tommy Mottola, telling Hello! magazine, "If I could go back again, I wouldn't do it."

Mottola - the former Sony Music boss who discovered Carey - split with the singer in 1997, after nearly four years of marriage.

Carey has also dated baseball star Derek Jeter and rapper Eminem, who in November blasted her on his "uncensored hip-hop channel" for denying they dated.

So, will Carey get married again? "We'll see," she answers.

The Grammy-winning singer also says she's not in any rush to have children. "What I want is to have children in a good way, with the right husband, with the right family life."

Asked if that means she'd only have children if she were married, "I think so," she says. "But who knows? Five years from now I might get hysterical and say, 'I have to have kids!' But I don't think so."

Note: The March 6, 2007, cover 959 issue of Hello! magazine features the interview with Mariah.

A Tennessee High School turned into a Hollywood sound stage Monday night.

Filming began at Sequatchie County High for a movie starring actor Val Kilmer and singer Mariah Carey.

Filmmakers are using the school's auditorium and football field for a movie about a road trip between New Mexico and Tennessee.

It was a closed set tonight, so our crews were not allowed on set. Neither Kilmer nor Carey were on scene.

Note: Misleading report. Val Kilmer's participation in the movie, if any, is not known nor confirmed.

In response to insistent requests made by the MCarey Latin Forum, the most important gay Latin website, SentidoG has begun to publish Mariah Carey news. In the last two months, the site which is very partial to the "favorite of the homosexuals" Madonna, has already published nine articles, e.g. about Pinko, Playboy, upcoming album, etc.

This news is very important for us to share with you since SentidoG reaches thousands of people across South America, in places where, as I mentioned in my previous report, Mariah does not get the much-needed support from her record label Universal.

Meanwhile, a popular impersonator of Pin Up, Mar Del Plata City (Buenos Aires) made a special performance of Mariah's "Mi Todo/My All Remix" in its recent show. You can watch the video here.

Online Music Services Now Offer Editorials

Kyle Hopkins also known as DJ "Kid Hops" on KEXP-FM leads a group of music experts, disc jockeys, producers, journalists and musicians responsible for editorial content and programming on Zune Marketplace, the online music service that works with the Zune device, Microsoft's bid to take on Apple Inc.'s dominant iTunes and iPod combination.

Common editorial duties at online music services include assembling playlists, writing accompanying articles or reviews, and choosing which songs and albums to highlight.

For music writers shifting from traditional magazines and radio stations, another major difference is that they can't simply dismiss particular artists out of hand, Jon Maples, Rhapsody's editor in chief said.

"Our customers aren't paying us 15 bucks a month for us to tell them that their musical taste sucks," he said. "We have to make sure that if someone is a Mariah Carey fan, we're serving their purposes."

That doesn't mean they can't write with some attitude.

"It's a sick fact of life that with the release of Rainbow, Ms. Carey pushed ahead of the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent at the top of the singles chart," wrote Linda Ryan, a Rhapsody senior editor, in one blurb. "On this release, her five-octave range takes a backseat to guest vocalists, easy hip-hop beats, dance grooves and plenty of flesh-peddling videos."

"Free At Last"
HX Magazine, April 2005

As on all of her previous albums, Carey co-wrote every song on Emancipation. So where did all those breakup songs come from? "Past experiences, darling," she laughs. "You try to take those moments and channel them into something, because if not you just become bitter!"

"Shake It Off" takes a playful approach to bitterness--and, more specifically, a cheatin' bad apple--with lyrics like "I gotta shake you off/just like a Calgon commercial." "That's probably one of my favorite songs on the album," she admits. "Shake It Off" can apply to anything. Whatever personal dramas we go through, put that song on and you lose the anxiety or intensity of the moment. I'll listen to that song when I've just come out of an annoying meeting. I gotta shake this off."

Emancipation isn't a concept album per se, but it definitely sees Carey shaking off what audiences have come to expect. "Everyone expects [an album title] like Rainbow or Butterfly," she explains. "So I thought The Emancipation of Mimi was cool--that Mimi side of me coming out as opposed to 'Mariah Carey' celebrity or stigma or whatever preconceived notions people have of me as the person. This time I really experimented and played with how [my vocals] sounded as a whole." READ MORE -->

Mariah Carey Filming Tennessee in Tennessee
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 25-Feb-2007, 6:14AM EST
Mariah Carey will be in town this week filming the independent movie Tennessee. She's picked up a Southern drawl to play a waitress/ singer who flees her controlling husband to join two brothers on their journey from New Mexico to Tennessee to locate their estranged father. Lance Reddick plays her husband; Ethan Peck (Gregory's grandson) and Adam Rothenberg play the brothers.

"It's not about my character, but she has an important part of the story without the whole thing resting on my shoulders," Mariah tells MTV News. (You may recall she was crucified by the press for her starring role in Glitter.) "Plus, I'll be able to get up and go to work and be somebody else for the day, and we like that because sometimes you just need to get away."

She's writing a song with Willie Nelson for the project, which is directed by Aaron Woodley and produced by Lee Daniels of Monster's Ball.

Diva Mariah balked at the movie's low-budget constraints, which require her to fly economy class. Writes Liz Smith: "Mariah had the last laugh. She did it. She bought out every seat in economy and flew alone in the economy cabin."

Note: As previously reported, Mariah told MTV Europe that there is no truth to the Liz Smith report that she bought out the entire economy class.

Glitter Saves A Life
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 24-Feb-2007, 1:33PM EST

Singer Sara Botkin
Sara Botkin's love of music would prove not only to be life-changing but also lifesaving.

On her way to the 105th floor of the World Trade Center South Tower, where she worked as a financial analyst, Ms. Botkin chose to dawdle in the tower's concourse. It was the day her favorite artist, Mariah Carey, was releasing a new album, "Glitter."

"I'm a huge Mariah Carey fan. I always, always buy her music the morning it's released. I went to Sam Goody to buy that CD, which was why I was a little behind.

"I was waiting for my elevator when the first plane hit," she said. "When I saw people running, I did think, is this a bomb or something intentional? I thought about Oklahoma City and said, 'Wow, I wonder if I'm going to be hurt today.' "

Ms. Botkin was not hurt, but more than 100 of her co-workers at AON Corp. would perish as United Airlines Flight 175 crashed 20-some floors beneath them. The full impact of what had happened didn't dawn on her, she said, until she headed home on the subway.

As her train emerged from the Manhattan tunnel onto the elevated tracks in Queens, she saw the two towers in flames.

Sara will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at Hiland Presbyterian Church in Ross.

Mariah Looking For High-Ceiling House in London
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 23-Feb-2007, 10:31PM EST
Mariah Carey is the latest diva to sign a mega deal with a fashion giant - she's now the new face of Pinko. On the subject of size zero fashion models, Mariah balked at the issue and told me she had no idea why girls would want to look like that.

The multi-octave diva also let it slip that she was looking to buy a London flat in the heart of Knightsbridge. Her reason? "Well, a girl loves to shop," she told me.

Mariah was viewing properties up to the value of £8 million, but stipulated: "They must have high ceilings so that I can practice my vocals."

Mariah Carey's Beauty Complex
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 23-Feb-2007, 7:26AM EST
Mariah Carey has a complex about her looks.

The sexy singer, famed for her curvaceous figure, admits she has always been paranoid about how she looks and doesn't believe she has a "best" feature.

She said: "I'm not sure I have best features. I had things I hated about myself. At the age of 12 I dyed my hair orange by mistake, and I shaved my eyebrows. You get a complex from that. Normally my cheeks look fat when I smile."

The 'Glitter' star also admits she regrets many of her fashion disasters, but has dismissed claims she deliberately dresses provocatively for attention.

She said: "I regret many outfits, so many. People always say that I'm raunchy, but how can I be raunchy? I'm eternally 12."

Mariah Interviews With Hong Kong TV In London
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 22-Feb-2007, 4:11PM EST
Here is a nice video interview with Mariah Carey by the Hong Kong TV program, TVB, in London. In the interview, Mariah greeted all the Chinese fans a "Happy Chinese New Year" ["Kung Hei Fat Choy"] and also talked about shopping, her legs, new movie, and the cancelled Hong Kong concert.

[Watch the YouTube video on right or download here]

"Happy Chinese New Year!"

We're very happy for you to spend our Chinese New Year with us in London. Can you express your Chinese New Year greetings to our audience.
"Happy New Year to all the audience who's watching out there. Happy Chinese New Year!

In Chinese we say, "Kung Hei Fat Choy."
"Kung Hei Fat Choy."

And in China, in Hong Kong, what we do in the New Year, we buy new clothes and I saw you shopping around. Are you yourself a shop-a-holic?
"I'm not really a shop-a-holic because I never have time and also I don't have patience. When I'm shopping, I like to just look at something. 'Do I like it? I think so' and I try it at home later and bring it back if I don't like it."

You have a perfect body and especially your legs. They said your legs are the 'celebrity legs of a goddess.' Do you agree?
"That was a very nice thing for them to say and you know, I try whatever, do the best I can to stay in shape but it is what it is."

This coming year, I heard you are making a new movie. Is that right?
"Yes. It's coming along really, really well. Very excited about it because the film maker and all the people involved, you know, are really passionate about the movie. My part is very opposite of me. I think it's gonna be really cool."

Your Hong Kong fans were quite disappointed that you cancelled your tour last year.
"[Apologetic] Yeah, I didn't mean to do that. That wasn't me but everything has to be planned a little more in advance because it was the last minute that I went on tour so next time we do it in advance and everything taken care of first so I can see my Hong Kong fans 'cause they really mean a lot to me."

Was that a very difficult decision for you to cancel that?
"You know it wasn't really like I had a choice. It was just the way the promoters and people had to deal with stuff so of course, I was sad to not be able to see my fans but next time I want to come and see the fans for as many shows as possible."

News From Argentina
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 22-Feb-2007, 2:52PM EST
In Argentina the news about Pinko and Playboy have been reported a lot although Mariah lacks a label that supports her in the country. Universal Music Argentina does not even send her videos to music channels. Here, her Argentinian fans are the only ones who support Mariah.

Here is an exclusive video interview from the Argentinian Cronica TV showing new footage from Mariah's Pinko stint in London, UK. The Cronica TV segment also reported on her new film Tennessee, her former boyfriend Luis Miguel, Eminem, Jack, etc.

[ Watch the YouTube video on top or download here ]

Some Excerpts
In the Mariah issue of Playboy, known for its nude women, Mariah Carey at the last moment decided to pose only in underwear and bathing suit. She didn't want to cause a scandal. "I think a lot of my fans wouldn't want me to do that and that's the main reason I didn't do it," the superstar says who turns 37 years on March 27.

In the world of show business, according to Forbes she is the sixth richest female star with a fortune of more than 225 million dollars. Capricious to the limit, she insured her legs for a million dollars. Now she signed a millionaire contract with Pinko, which also has the services of her friend, Naomi Campbell. "Come on, of course everybody wants to look nice, dress up and try to look pretty."

The dramatic rupture with Luis Miguel is a taboo topic. They say that she suffered from deep depression and intended to commit suicide when the Mexican crooner abandoned her. "In this moment, I can only be in love with life and put things in place."

Mariah said her marriage was like she was kidnapped and put in a cage of gold. "Not everything has been good moments. Some have been good and other bad. But it is what it is. Past is past. They're not there anymore for a reason."

Mariah prefers the company of her dog that is already very famous. It has 5 personal websites on the internet. "Maybe I will have a son, but now I am with my dog Jack."

Mariah ends the interview thanking Corazon Corazon. "Muchos gracias, Corazon Corazon."

Many thanks to Hernan and Maria of Mariah Buenos Aires MSN Group for capturing and uploading the video file for us.

Mariah Hooks Up With Bone Thugs - And Willie Nelson?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 21-Feb-2007, 7:21PM EST
Carey joins Bow Wow on new Bone track; Nelson co-writes track with Mimi for her new movie.

Mariah Carey is just getting started on her new album. And although she hasn't said yet who she'll be working with, if some of her recent collaborations are any indication, we could be in for some surprises.

First, Carey recorded a track with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony for the group's comeback album, Strength and Loyalty, due April 17, according to the group's label rep. "She promised that she was gonna do a song with us once, and she kept her promise," Krayzie Bone previously told MTV News.

Carey not only kept her word, but she brought along Bow Wow to sweeten her offering on the song "Lil L.O.V.E." "I call it 'Little Little,' " she told MTV Europe. "It's a favorite of mine. It's a nice song, and I think it really kind of gives you the back-in-the-day Bone vibe but also a very new take on who they are as artists."

Carey said that she and other artists owe a debt to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony because their influence is so widespread in rap and hip-hop. "A lot of times people are like, 'I will make up a part,' and people actually think they made up that part," she said. "But I am so influenced by their style that it kind of merges together. It's funny, because so many artists today are influenced by Bone, and they may not even realize it."

Carey's got another influence her fans might not recognize - at least for the song in her upcoming movie "Tennessee." Her character, Crystal, is a waitress - just like Carey's role in 2002's "WiseGirls" - but this time, she's also an aspiring songwriter. Through the course of the story, as she joins two brothers on their journey to find their estranged father, she writes a song and performs it in a bar.

Crystal's song is being co-written by Carey and Willie Nelson. Carey hasn't shot the scene yet (it will be filmed next week), but in another part of the movie, she'll hint at her influence by singing a bit of Nelson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night" a cappella, according to the film's rep.

"This character is really far from who I am in a lot of ways," Carey said. "There are some parallels, some internal things, nothing that people would ever look at and go, 'That's very Mariah.' But this is not me at all. The character is so not what you would think. This is not about hairdos and ensembles. The girl's in the trenches. And I'm the third lead, so it's nice to work with an ensemble cast and to really just be able to do my work and go home at night."

Carey started shooting "Tennessee" in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico, last month. She's back there shooting this week, before shooting her bar scenes in Nashville and wrapping her one month of production. No release date has been set for the film.

Meanwhile, her next album, "which is really early on in the creative process," is due this fall, according to her label rep.

New Mariah-Bone Thugs Collaboration: "Lil L.O.V.E"
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 21-Feb-2007, 5:43AM EST
Mariah Carey is currently jet setting around the world, having just wrapped up 'The Emancipation Of Mimi' tour, promoting her new role as the face of Pinko in London, and filming the independent movie 'Tennessee' in New Mexico. This superstar sure knows how to multi-task!

In between jaunts, Mariah found the time to catch up with MTV News International and was enthusiastic to talk about collaborating with rap group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony on their highly anticipated comeback album 'Strength & Loyalty'.

Mariah Carey revealed that she will feature on their single 'Lil L.O.V.E', and explained, "it's a favourite song of mine, I love working with them, and Bow wow is also on that record, and it's a nice song and I think it really kind of gives you the back in the day Bone vibe, but also a very new take on who they are as artists."

"I have always loved blending my voice with theirs, and a lot of times people are like, I will make up a part, and people will think they made up the part, but I am so influenced by their style, that it kind of merges together.

She went on to add, "It's funny because so many rap artists today are influenced by Bone and they may not even realize it."

Note: As previously reported, the new Bone Thugs-N-Harmony album, Strength & Loyalty, is due out on April 17, 2007.

News From Serbia and Slovakia
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2007, 11:25PM EST
The Serbian daily newspaper, Blic in its Sept. 17th edition reported about Mariah's Pinko contract. They said that Mariah became the highest paid cover girl in the world, receiving 10 million pounds for the ad. They also reported that Mariah topped Madonna for her Versace campaign.

It is expected that the other Serbian magazines like Gloria, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Story, Joy will also report about Mariah's contract with Pinko with additional photos from the party. There is a Pinko store in Belgrade, in the most prestigious part of town. The store is located at the corner of Kralja Petra Street and Uzun Mirkova Street. My sister and I checked the store yesterday and still there are no Mariah promotional pictures up just yet. A store associate said they will receive them soon!

Nothing new from what has already been reported, but Mariah doesn't get that many mentions in Slovakian news so this is nice for a change. This was from the Sept. 17th edition of the Slovakian newspaper, Novy Cas.

Mariah Always Wears High-Heeled Shoes
American singer Mariah Carey is addicted to shoes with high heels. She wears them continuosly, even she could swim with them. The singer, known for her diva demands, says she can't wear flat shoes but can do anything in heels. "I can't wear flat shoes - they give me blisters. My babysitter used to laugh at me because when I was 12 I would always tiptoe. I couldn't walk flat."

Mariah, 37, also revealed she hopes scientists will have invented a cream to cure old age by the time she needs plastic surgery. "I hope when I get to the stage when I might need to contemplate cosmetic surgery there will be a cream. We're still not sure what's in Botox. I'm lucky because of my ethnicity, I think that I'll be able to live with the lines. But I think aging at all is just horrible."

Derek Jeter: "I'll Never Date Somebody Famous Again"
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2007, 8:01PM EST
I was listening to Derek Jeter's take on the whole Alex Rodriguez affair yesterday morning and I couldn't help but flip back to 2001, when I was working on a Jeter magazine profile and considered broaching a topic with him that I was told was taboo: his dating of Mariah Carey.

According to everything that I had heard, that was akin to asking DiMaggio about Marilyn.

"Trust me, Derek will cut you right off," someone close to him said to me at the time. "Don't even try."

Yet, I took the shot anyway and I'm not sure now what I asked about Mariah first, but, to my utter shock, he actually answered it, however briefly. In fact, I felt on such safe ground that I quickly hit him with a follow-up, which he answered as well, unflinchingly, his words being thoughtful and interesting and introspective. "I'll probably never date somebody famous again," was one thing he said.

But then came my third question on the matter and, suddenly, I saw something clearly turn over in him.

Into something dark.

He paused for a moment and looked at me hard, pressing those luminescent light green eyes squarely into my blue ones.

I knew: He had finally caught himself in a place where he never goes.

"That's it," Jeter said coldly. "Next subject."

There is indeed a diamond-hard line that Jeter holds strong between his public and private life, and I don't think I've ever witnessed him crossing it, even for a second, since that tinderbox episode nearly six years ago.

"I understand that my job is public," Jeter was saying yesterday, responding to Rodriguez's long-winded confessional the day before on their shrinking relationship, "but your personal life is your personal life. Once you open that door, it doesn't stop. So I don't feel it's necessary to talk about things that have nothing to do with baseball."

That is Jeter's edict in a nutshell, and I find it an admirable and intelligent way to lead a celebrity existence.

Certainly, it's not good for us in the media, always on the prowl for juicy sound bytes and free-flowing quotes, but it is good for him.

Mentioned briefly on last night's Larry King Live. They were discussing Britney Spears and how she can possibly "come back like Mariah Carey did."

Meanwhile, David Hinckley, Critic-at-Large for NY Daily News, offers an interesting perspective on the tendency for fans to "forgive and forget" when stars go off the rails, stating that when it all comes down to it, the music is the important thing. He contends that if Britney can get some quality material back on the airwaves, she may very well overcome all of this bad publicity and find herself on top again. His historical account of past stars who have been in similar situations includes Mariah Carey, James Brown, and the Dixie Chicks, among others.

And in Star Magazine: Jennifer Hudson is scheduled to perform "I Love You, I Do" during the Oscars ceremony, and Star hopes she won't follow in Mariah Carey's diva-like footsteps by wearing five dresses!

Priest Blesses Pinko Campaign Launch
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2007, 10:28AM EST
Singer Mariah Carey was taken aback at the recent opening of designer clothing store Pinko in London, when she was confronted by a Venetian priest who told the star he was praying for her.

Friar Nasr, a friend of Pinko president Pietro Negra, was flown out to the UK to deliver a special message to the "We Belong Together" hitmaker after she became the new face of the Italian firm on Thursday, February 15, 2007. He says, "I handed her the prayer card of St Benedict. She looked pleased."

However, Negra denied Carey - whose mother is Catholic - was expected to behave in any particular way because of the message. He says, "Religion is important to our family - we are all churchgoers. But we didn't ask Mariah to work for us for any religious reasons - business is business."

"I've never followed trends. I would just wear what I feel like and I know that makes like some people mad but the thing is that it should be about you expressing yourself. When you are a musician, a songwriter and an artist and you know some people feel like they need to follow the trends that they get on those pages every day and you know, who wore it better, who did this or that. For me it's about being yourself and maybe people end up following you, you know what I mean?"

"I don't know if I'm a trendsetter but I have seen a lot of looks that look very familiar on other 'popstars' if we call them that. So I mean, it's like that's cool, that's fun but I just like clothes and this is fun."

"I'm definitely, you know, sometimes I have my favorite movies that I watch. Obviously, I think everybody loves 'The Queen' and love Helen Mirren. I really love 'The Devil Wears Prada' too. I love Meryl Streep and I love that movie so I'm conflicted."

Mariah On The Cover: EW 1997 and InStyle 1998
Posted by Adi on Monday, 19-Feb-2007, 6:56PM EST
Mariah Journal's On The Cover section has been updated to now include scans and articles from Entertainment Weekly, September 1997 and InStyle, June 1998 magazines. Below are excerpts.

"Butterflies Are Free"
Entertainment Weekly - Sept. 26, 1997

Mottola defenders deny that Carey's life in Bedford was harshly circumscribed. They concede that Mottola could be overly possessive. But they insist this was in reaction to Carey's behavior. A deep-seated insecurity, they say, prompted her to continually seek attention from other men. "If she knew there'd be guys around, she'd wear really short shorts and get all made up, just to make an entrance.... She didn't realize you got a husband here. You can't be flirtatious just to boost your ego."

Soon after, she met 22-year-old New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter at a Nov. 21 benefit for the Fresh Air Fund, a charity the singer has long supported... "One of the major reasons this marriage fell apart is because she was seeing this guy," says a Mottola sympathizer, who's galled by the video portrayal of Carey as victim. "The idea of her as this spirit who has broken free is absurd.... Mariah is no innocent." READ MORE -->

"Madame Butterfly"
InStyle - July 1998

"Butterflies are always following me, everywhere I go." Inscribed near the top are the Latin words levior aura, which translates as "lighter than a breeze." But for Carey, the painting "has something to do with freedom."

Certainly, freedom has been a major theme in this 28-year-old superstar's recent history. Shortly before releasing Butterfly last September, Carey announced her separation from Sony Music Entertainment president and CEO Tommy Mottola, the man who discovered her in 1989 and married four years later. While the couple, who remain on amicable terms, fielded offers for the mansion they had built and decorated together on a secluded suburban estate in Bedford, New York, Carey embarked on a diligent search for a place of her own. That search instinctively led the Long Island native to the Big Apple. "I remember being 5 or 6 years old, looking at New York from the back of a car, thinking, I'm gonna live in the city one day!" Carey recalls.

An anomaly in Carey's jacket collection is a hulking navy-blue number emblazoned with the New York Yankees logo. "I went to a game the other day and I got cold, so I bought one," Carey says coyly. Without much pressing, she tells the real story: The rumors that she is dating Derek Jeter are true. She met him, she says, about a year ago, and their relationship evolved from a friendship and has been strengthened by the common ground they share. READ MORE -->

Mariah Denies 'Buying Out Economy Class'
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 17-Feb-2007, 3:30PM EST
Is there any reality in the rumor that Mariah Carey honored a request by producers to fly coach to the set of her drama "Tennessee" - only she bought out the entire economy class to keep it to herself? Carey told MTV Europe:

"No, it's not true. That is probably one of those things that is going to haunt me for the rest of my life, but that would be pretty funny if somebody was stupid enough to do that. I took my tour bus down because I wanted to be in the environment, like experience what it would be like to live in the area where we are filming and just go to real places to eat and meet people along the way and stuff like that."

Note: It was syndicated writer, Liz Smith who first reported that Mariah "bought out every seat in economy and flew alone in the economy cabin" to the Tennessee set. Click here to read the article.

NBA All-Star Top Weekend Moments: Mariah at #12
Posted by Adi on Friday, 16-Feb-2007, 8:03PM EST
NBA All-Star Weekend isn't as much about the competition as it is about the entertainment. As this year's festivities commence in a city built to entertain, Las Vegas, SI.com thought the time was right to countdown the most memorable moments the NBA's midseason extravaganza has produced -- at least until this year.

12. Mariah on fi-ah
2003 -- Atlanta
Nothing that happened on the court that weekend in Atlanta could match the halftime performance Mariah Carey gave in tribute to Michael Jordan, who was making his final All-Star appearance. The curvy pop songstress began her performance in a skin-tight Bulls jersey mini dress, complete with script Chicago and Jordan's No. 23. A quick wardrobe change later, Carey was back on the court in a low-cut, form-fitting Wizards gown, also sporting the Jordan 23. Oh, and the music? There was music? Did we mention the dresses? Or that the NBA Store in New York City received a blizzard of phone calls the next day from women who hoped to purchase Carey's outfits for proms.

Mariah Plays Waitress in Tennessee
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 16-Feb-2007, 5:52PM EST
Pop diva Mariah Carey is playing a waitress in a new film produced by Lee Daniels of Monster's Ball fame. Tennessee will be the third film the Grammy-winner has made, following her debut in Glitter in 2001. The film, in which she played singer Billie Frank, flopped at the box office.

The 36-year-old, who also played a waitress in the independent film Wise Girls, joins two men as they search for their father after one discovers he has cancer.

Speaking about the film, the singer said: "It is a complete departure for me. It's a great role for me to play and it's totally different from my persona."

Carey says that if it wasn't for Wise Girls she wouldn't have been chosen for the role. "Lee Daniels saw Wise Girls at Sundance (film festival) and we knew each other sort of and it all came together," she said.

"He (Lee) is a creative genius. He is a risk taker but I feel safe. The script was amazing. All three (characters) find their way in the end. It will hopefully come out in the fall."

The film is being shot in New Mexico and filming is expected to finish by the end of March.

New Information on Mariah's Album
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 16-Feb-2007, 5:25PM EST
Mariah fan Carlos was one of the attendees at last night's Pinko party in London. He chatted it up with Mark Sudack, a member of Mariah's management, and had the opportunity to ask about Mariah's forthcoming album(s). Here's what he was able to gather from the conversation:

They have a title, and it's certainly NOT "Illusions: The Butterfly Within."

The album is NOT in a complete or near complete state. Mariah will be putting her full focus on it immediately after completion of Tennessee.

They do have an album title and it's more than one word.

If there are two albums this year, one will be the mainstream studio album and the second will be a Christmas one.

The album will be released last quarter of 2007. Nothing until after September. Any dates to the contrary on Billboard sheets are completely untrue.

Mariah Carey at Pinko
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 16-Feb-2007, 1:11PM EST
Mariah Carey needs no introduction. She is an award-winning superstar with total sales of her records in excess of 165 million worldwide, making her the top-selling female artist in history. Leading Italian fashion house Pinko announced Mariah as the new face of their London inspired fashion brand.

The Pinko campaign featuring Carey was shot by photographer Michelangelo Di Battista and art directed by Giovanni Bianco. The images depict Carey in strong sultry poses wearing Pinko's signature urban designs.

I was one of the few media and fashionistas to receive an invite to Pinko's cocktail party to celebrate the new campaign and their newly refurbished store on Brompton Road. The store was lit up and there were paparazzi and police surrounding the area, not to mention the many fans waiting outside in the cold to catch a glimpse of their idol. Inside the store was a different story, it was full of glamorous people sipping on the neverending glasses of pink champagne and cocktails, and waiters handing out canapees (tiny sized food to us little people). As time went on, more and more celebrities arrived including Kimberley Stewart, Calum Best, Duncan from Blue, Ronan and Yvonne Keating, Benny Medina (Mariah's manager) and JC Chasez (from 'N Sync).

Suddenly the cameras outside started clicking like crazy and I caught a sneaky peek at Naomi Campbell (a previous model for Pinko) outside posing with her new look hair style. Not long after, Mariah Carey herself joined her looking relaxed but she spoke little words. They entered Pinko together and the paparazzi took photos of them. Naomi went off to circulate while Mariah was whisked upstairs. The place was packed and everyone wanted to speak with her. Making our way back down the stairs was a mission and Benny Medina was looking a bit frustrated, he said "Why can't people think of waiting and not going down the stairs like everyone else?!" and then started bopping to a Mariah song.

After only about ten minutes, Mariah and her entourage made their way to the door. I was introduced to her by Michael Richardson and she autographed my invitation (bless her) which proves she never turns down autographs no matter how busy it is around her. Michael let me know where they were having dinner so I made my way there. San Lorenzo's on Beauchamp Place had paparazzi waiting outside already to take a few more shots after dinner. The restaurant was very cosy and they had their own big table on the top floor with candles scattering the surface. Benny Medina, Michael Richardson, Connie Filippello, Mark Sudack and Mariah were all there together and looked like they were having a grand old time. I said my goodbyes and went home while they went back to Claridge's. I finally met Mariah Carey, my favourite singer and most probably the most talented person I will ever meet.

Back-to-back, diva-to-diva

A-list celebrities kept away, when the world's two biggest hissy-fit throwers, Naomi Campbell and Mariah Carey were placed in the same room.

Only boutique staff and D-list celebrities were left quaking in their boots, in anticipation of the ultimate cat fight, when Naomi joined Mariah at the Pinko Boutique in Knightsbridge last night.

Carey, renown for her excessive dressing room demands and pre-performance strops, is in London as the new face of the Pinko fashion label.

Meanwhile Campbell has been ordered to attend an anger management course after pleading guilty to assaulting a staff member.

Luckily for on-lookers the night went smoothly, without the spoilt stars turning on each other.

Amazingly, their pulling power looked dwindled when only a clutch of D-list celebrities turned out for the launch, including Calum Best, Ronan Keating and T4's Steve Jones.

The two divas hit it off so well they ducked into the nearby San Lorenzo restaurant for a meal afterwards.

Mariah Video Interview at Pinko Photo Call
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 16-Feb-2007, 2:31AM EST
Mariah Carey becomes the new face of Italian design house Pinko and gives her views on size zeros, and other topics.

Mariah answers the most controversial of fashion topics: "Size Zero Models"
"It's really like none of my business but I mean, I do think that if somebody is naturally a size zero or in that range, then that's fine. That's who they are and that's their body type. But I think that it's unrealistic to expect people who are just not built that way to be size zero, whether they're models or not. I mean, a 2 should suffice. You know what I mean?"

Mariah insists she's never been away
"You know I never went anywhere. People wrote a lot of stuff about me in the press and that's what happens when you become famous. And you know, it is what it is."

"It's great to be doing a lot of fun projects and being, yes, getting awards is lovely and doing all this stuff is great. But I've always been me and I have a very strong sense of faith and that's what keeps me going. And I think you have to go through valleys to have peaks and you can't just expect everything to be fantastic all the time. And I think that when someone can climb up after going through a difficult time then you are a living testimony and people need to see that."

Mariah says she doesn't see herself as a fashion role model
"You know what, it's really hard for me to see myself as anything other than just me. I look at pictures of mine and 'Oh! That's a cool picture. It's me, whatever' you know what I mean? It's not like I look at it that. It's not that I don't take it seriously but it's taking pictures, it's fun, it's playing dress up, it's having a good time."

"I've got thighs and buttocks - I'm never going to be a size zero"

Mariah Carey, now the face of the Pinko label, reveals her stylistic highs and lows

After a difficult childhood, Mariah Carey, 37, began her musical career in her late teens. Her big break came when her demo tape was given to Tommy Mottola, then the head of Sony Music Entertainment. They married in 1993, and divorced five years later. She is the bestselling female artist in history, with record sales of more than 165 million worldwide. She has won five Grammy Awards and is the world's richest female recording artist. Despite what she calls the "debacle" of her debut film, Glitter, she is shooting Tennessee in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with Lee Daniels, who produced Monster's Ball. She flew to London this week to promote Pinko, a high-end, high-street label with which she fell in love after visiting its store in Capri.

You're rumoured to have a serious walk-in closet.
I have four if you include storage. I live on three floors of a block in Tribeca, so I have space. There's one for lingerie, a shoe closet I designed with the architect Mario Buatta, and a pretty area for clothes with moving wardrobes and a bunch of shelves where I do fittings with stylists. The closets are a big part of my life, but it's a work environment, too. It sounds obsessive - and it is pretty fabulous. But when I was 17 I had to wear my mum's shoes and my feet poked through them. It was a really snowy winter and I thought,"One day I'm going to have so many shoes." The money thing was weird, like I went to bed poor and woke up rich.

How do you accentuate your best features?
I'm not sure I have best features. I had things I hated about myself. But I always believed in my voice and my music writing. At the start, I was offered $5,000 for my music rights and that was a fortune to me, but I knew enough about the business and my talent not to accept it. I would have ended up with nothing.

Worst fashion looks?
At the age of 12 I dyed my hair orange by mistake, and I shaved my eyebrows. You get a complex from that.

How much pressure does the industry put on everyone to look the same?
The industry doesn't really know what it wants until it sees something successful and then tries to carbon-copy it. At the start of my career I didn't see it as being about style; it was about talent. My mum was an opera singer and I'm privileged to have sung with Pavarotti. I hang out with a lot of singers and musicians - who aren't size zero, so my body image is not part of that world.

What was with all the raunch?
People always said that I was raunchy, but how can I be raunchy? I'm eternally 12. The photographer David LaChapelle says I look like Mary Poppins. At the start I deliberately didn't do bare midriffs because I wanted people to concentrate on my voice. I was being advised by people well into their forties on what was cool, and they wanted me to be wholesome and All-American, which I'm so not. My father's black, my mother's Irish-American, and the way I grew up was hardly The Brady Bunch .

But once they got the voice, I really had to push to wear things that were more revealing. It was probably because I was rebelling - I was married young and my husband was very specific about my look. I couldn't even do my hair the way I wanted because he wanted it his way. I cannot believe now that I was married. When we got divorced I just wanted to have some fun.

Do you regret any outfit?
Many, oh so many. But if I tell you which ones, you're gonna run them huge, right?

Hot date: what do you wear?
I haven't really gone on many, believe it or not. But I'll wear whatever I think is sexy - it doesn't mean that I'm going to bed with that person.

High maintenance?
Completely. Everything about me is high maintenance, starting with the voice, which I look after like a child. I take a humidifier wherever I go and I sleep in a steam room to protect it. The TV in there is behind glass.

Then there's the body, and my trainer, who is about the size of my pinkie finger, but she understands my body. I'm very muscular, so if I wear a wrong-shaped dress, people always think that I've gained weight. Actually I've stopped weighing myself. I've got thighs and buttocks and I'm never going to be a size zero. I like my curves. But I'm not gonna lie - if there's a sample that's a size two and I fit into it, I feel great. I don't do enough gym. I don't do facials because I have rosacea and having people poke at your face is not good for that. But I have home remedies: I make little packs of milk and ice to calm it down. I'm a beauty school dropout. I did 500 hours, so I can do my own make-up and hair. Now the hair is high maintenance. It's really curly and can take hours.

Favourite designers?
That's difficult. It's more about favourite pieces. Today I'm in Gucci [camel poncho] and Alexander McQueen [but-ton-up black stiletto ankle boots] and these two rings from Van Cleef and Arpels [enormous diamond-encrust-ed butterflies, a tribute to her album Butterfly ]. It's quite pared-down, mainly because I spilt something over myself and had to take off the blouse that I was wearing.

Is there anything you wouldn't wear?
Flat shoes - they give me blisters. My babysitter used to laugh at me because when I was 12 I was always on tiptoe. I couldn't walk flat. Even my trainer said to me,"Mariah, you canNOT wear flats" - and I'm like, but they're Hermas and they match my bikini. I guess I'm a heel girl. I can run in them. I could swim in them if necessary.

Would you ever contemplate cosmetic surgery?
I hope when I get to that stage there will be a cream. Botox? Well, we're still not sure what's in that stuff. I'm lucky - because of my ethnicity, I think that I'll be able to live with the lines.

Are you for ageing gracefully or disgracefully?

What's disgracefully?
I think ageing at all is just horrible.

Do you follow trends?
Not really, because I don't read magazines - you see all these pictures of yourself getting bashed. My friends cut out the nice ones. I'm oblivious to the other stuff. The press has put me through the wringer, but at this point in my career, let's be honest, it doesn't really matter.

Mariah: "Don't ban size zero models"
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 15-Feb-2007, 7:35PM EST
Mariah Carey has waded into the size zero debate today insisting thin models should not be banned from the catwalk.

The Grammy award-winning singer, who today became the face of London-inspired fashion brand Pinko, said she was not taking a "campaigning" stance on the issue.

But the 36-year-old pop superstar said: "I don't think anyone should be banned from anything. There should not be a precedent. That cannot work if you are naturally a size zero.

"As long as it's not leading people to do harmful things to themselves to achieve that then it's fine."

She also said that shoppers should not be able to buy size zero clothes but that the smallest size for clothes available in stores should be size two.

The singer, who was sporting a specially-designed pair of gold-encrusted jeans, estimated to be worth around 3,000, was speaking at the launch of the Pinko campaign.

Mariah follows in the footsteps of supermodels Elle Macpherson, Eva Herzigova and Naomi Campbell who have also been faces for Pinko.

The new campaign, which will be featured in 750 stores worldwide, was shot by renowned photographer Michelangelo Di Battista.

Mariah To Record 'World Peace One' Song Feb. 19th
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 15-Feb-2007, 5:34AM EST
Chinese singer Zhang Liangying was among the international performers who recorded Give Your Love on Monday night, which is part of World Peace One's call for world peace.

Other singers and bands that have been invited to record Give Your Love include U2, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Green Day, and many others. Zhang, third place winner in China's 2005 "Super Girl" singing contest, is the lone Asian female singer invited to participate so far.

World Peace One is a non-profit charitable organization that stresses a world community in a peaceful existence. The recording session time will take three days. Zhang participated in the first-day recording in Los Angeles.

According to World Peace One, Celine Dion will record the song in Las Vegas, and U2 will do it in Hawaii. Mariah Carey will also record it in New York on February 19 since she has a busy schedule doing a film. All the participating stars will record the song in various studios and send the demo to the producer to make up one song.

After the recording session, some performers are scheduled to participate in "A Call for an End to War" concert August 11. Organizers said the event should reach an audience of 3.5 billion worldwide through television, radio, Internet and cell phones.

Italian fashion house Pinko will tonight celebrate Mariah Carey as its new face, with a party held in her honour.

The campaign, which has been fronted by models Elle Macpherson, Eva Herzigova and Naomi Campbell in previous years, is rumoured to be worth 7million.

This would make Carey one of the highest paid musicians in a fashion advertising deal since 2005, when Madonna was reportedly paid 10.5million to sign with Versace.

This Valentine's Day, Mariah Journal features a collection of videos that are widely recognized as the most energetic and funny interviews of Mariah's past, courtesy of British radio and television host Jamie Theakston.

Mariah was always taken by Jamie's interviewing technique, which includes flirtatious chastising, and the incomparable chemistry between the two even once led to a romantic link. Mariah laughed off the rumor saying, "We merely made a joke about it once and then next thing I know, we're supposed to be getting married."

News From Germany
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 14-Feb-2007, 5:37AM EST
The German TV channel, NDR will broadcast the documentary, George Michael: A Different Story on March 5, 2007 at 11:45 p.m. As we all know, Mariah is featured in this film and she comments on the British singer as follows:

"I was looking at him and was like: 'Wow! This would be the ultimate goal if I could kind of do what he's doing.'"

"People in my school who only listened to rock music had that album ["Faith"]. People who only listened to rap music had that album!"

"I think that what he was saying probably had a lot of validity to it [Michael's fight against Sony]. And I was kind of behind the scenes and to me he should have won."

"I was a broke struggling teenager in New York. And I wanted to go see his show so bad. But obviously that wasn't in the card for me. So you know, hopefully one day."

Songs From The Heart
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 14-Feb-2007, 3:39AM EST
The love song is a many-splendored thing. Chocolates, flowers, jewelry and champagne are useful, but a tender romantic ballad reaches places other gifts don't go.

Even on Valentine's Day, some of us feel timid and shy about expressing love. Maybe it's fear of embarrassing the other person, or ourselves, but it can be heartbreakingly hard to utter the "L" word. That's one of the reasons we try to communicate the idea in poetry, through sweet deeds and song.

A quick Valentine's Day survey of pop fans who named their favorite love songs of the past few decades brought up such classics as Prince's "I Would Die 4 U," Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You," Elton John's "Your Song," Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You," Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" and lots more.

Many of Carey's hits and much of Blige's work is universally effective today because it comes from so much heartache. These are well-written songs that you can relate to, whatever stage of the relationship you might be in.

On The Cover: Mariah on Jane 1999
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 13-Feb-2007, 4:43PM EST
Mariah Journal's magazines section, On The Cover, has just been updated to include scans from the April 1999 issue of Jane. Thanks to Amanda for sending us the scans! Below are excerpts from the cover story.

Sleeping With Mariah
Jane - April 1999

"I am starving," Mariah Carey says. "Do you want something to eat?" Of all the things she could have said when meeting for the first time, she picked exactly the right one.

I've been sitting in Mariah's town house, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, waiting for her for about a half-hour. Not that I mind; a half-hour late is punctual, if you're on Diva Time. Meanwhile, I've been checking out the place, which is owned by a family that has decorated it in typical old New York town-house style: red toile wallpaper, Ming dynasty accents, dark wood furniture. Mariah rents the lower three floors, and by the time you read this, she'll probably have moved because she needs more space -- hell, the whole lower floor is just a giant walk-in closet. So the decor in the living room, dining room and kitchen areas is kind of transitional: The only hints of Mariah are lots of pictures of herself with her family and her pets, an occasional silver jar or box (monogrammed "MC"), and butterflies. Framed butterfly art, butterfly plates, four crystal butterflies.

This will be the third time in 24 hours that Mariah has eaten chicken tacos. "I had them for breakfast at 3 in the morning," she says. "Then I woke up at my standard 2 in the afternoon, and I wanted them again. And tonight, for dinner." There's something endearing about a woman who eats chicken tacos for breakfast.

An interesting thing about talking to Mariah is that she's smart/coy enough to bury the details from one story in an unrelated, not as hot, story. So she'll tell you stuff --just don't ask her to name names. For example, her marriage, pre- or post-bust, is "my former situation." A situation that, specifically, came to a close in 1997. Mariah will only allude to what went awry in her marriage; she insists that her video for "Honey," where she's held captive in a mansion by a bearded man and eventually escapes (via Jet Ski, no less!), isn't autobiographical. Here, in case you haven't seen in coming, is the butterfly metaphor in action: Mariah is finding out that there's life after divorce. An occasionally confusing life.

"The other day, I was really stressed out, and I was having heart palpitations. I know it was just that I was exhausted and had too much going on. So I had an EKG and all this stuff, and it was fine. My doctor was like, 'You never sleep; you never relax.'" As Mariah says this, we're being hustled from her town house to her limousine to go to the airport for her evening flight to Los Angeles, which comes after the interview -- which was preceded by two business meetings and God knows what else. And she wonders why she feels stressed? READ MORE -->

Mariah Carey flies economy class, but she does it on her own terms
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 13-Feb-2007, 7:15AM EST

Not above flying economy.
"Just say the lines and don't trip over the furniture," advised Noel Coward.

One of my favorites has done it again! Outsmarted the people who are supposed to be "in charge."

The very funny Mariah Carey, who signs her notes to me "The Diva Next Door," is down in Tennessee, appearing in a movie about two brothers on a road trip in search of their estranged dad.

Mariah learned a Southern accent for Tennessee, the movie, which includes Bernie Mac, James D'Arcy, Bill Sage, Chris Browning, Luce Rains and Gregory Peck's grandson, Ethan Peck. The director is Aaron Woodley and the producer is my good friend Lee Daniels, who did such a masterful job helping Halle Berry win the Oscar for Monster's Ball.

This movie is being made "on a shoestring," so Mariah was asked to fly down to location in economy class. Those who knew her just about fainted, saying, "She'll never do that!"

Mariah had the last laugh. She did it. She bought out every seat in economy and flew alone in the economy cabin.

Mariah To Front Pinko
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 13-Feb-2007, 7:09AM EST
She missed out on a pair of Grammys but songbird Mariah Carey still has something to celebrate.

The curvy 36-year-old has signed a multimillion pound deal to be the face of glam Italian brand Pinko. Dozens of designers had battled it out to convince the immaculate diva to work with them but the singer eventually chose Pinko.

"Mariah is so excited," gushes an insider. "She's such a girly girl and loves Pinko clothes. She can't wait to get started with the fashion shoots. It's something she has always wanted to do."

It's believed that Mariah's deal will rival the estimated £7million Madonna received when she signed for Versace.

Mariah, the best-selling female artist of all time, jets into London this week for Pinko's glitzy launch party. And we'll be there to celebrate with her as her Fantasy comes true.

Can't wait!

In slightly-related news, someone reminded us of a Mariah story from a few years back. Hungry one night, Carey decided she fancied a bagel so decided to pop to Brick Lane to pick one up. Not only going in herself, she waited in line with everyone else while they salted the beef (or whatever happens in bagel houses). See, she gets the diva tag, but having interviewed her, we think Miss Mariah is in fact very cool, pretty down to earth (well, for a popstress) and actually a very nice person. So there!" UK Press Release: International Superstar Mariah Carey The New Face of Pinko
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 12-Feb-2007, 2:23PM EST
08 February 2007, London: Today, leading Italian fashion house Pinko proudly announces global icon, Mariah Carey, as the new face of their London inspired fashion brand.

The Pinko campaign featuring Carey was shot by renowned photographer Michelangelo Di Battista and art directed by Giovanni Bianco. The striking images depict Carey in strong sultry poses wearing Pinko's signature sassy, urban designs.

Mariah Carey said: "I'm really flattered to have been asked to be the new face of Pinko. I first discovered this spectacular fashion house while working in Italy, in my favourite place in the world, the Isle of Capri, while recording my latest CD 'The Emancipation of Mimi.' I immediately became a huge fan of the brand, and I bought almost everything in the store. So as you can imagine, when I was approached about doing the Pinko campaign I was beyond excited. The clothes are so stylish and fun, and I'm really looking forward to our new venture together."

Pietro Negra, Pinko's president and founder said: "All our campaigns feature famously beautiful women, but this time we wanted not only a beautiful woman, but a musical artist, because music is the greatest channel of communication, it reaches across the generations, perfectly reflecting the Pinko brand's goal: to design clothes for women of all ages."

Mariah Carey joins an impressive roll call with previous faces of Pinko including elite supermodels Elle Macpherson, Eva Herzigova and Naomi Campbell. The latest campaign for Pinko launches in London, and can be seen throughout Pinko's 750 stores worldwide, including a flagship store in London SW3 (Brompton Road 161) and in shops in Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Venus and Mariah Carey Auction Autographed Legs
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 12-Feb-2007, 11:37AM EST
Sixteen-Foot Replica of Mariah Carey's Famous Legs to be Auctioned on eBay, Proceeds to Benefit the Fresh Air Fund

Looking for the perfect Valentine's Day gift for that special someone? What about giving the gift of gorgeous legs? Today, Venus announced that it will partner with Mariah Carey to auction off an autographed replica of the female artist's legendary legs.

The legs will be up for bid on the popular auction site, eBay, from February 12th through February 21st with all proceeds benefiting The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency that has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children visit volunteer host families in 13 Northeastern states or attend sleep-away camp. The centerpiece of The Fund's Career Awareness Program is Camp Mariah, named in honor of Board member/singer Mariah Carey for her dedication, support and commitment to Fresh Air youngsters. The auction can be viewed here.

In May 2006, Carey was honored as the first ever Venus "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess" at a Radio City Music Hall ceremony where she unveiled the 16' legs. The event marked the beginning of the 2006 Venus "Legs of a Goddess" contest -- an annual search for the woman with the best legs in America. Hundreds of women participated in the competition, which coincided with select concert dates on Ms. Carey's The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour.

"I'm thrilled to be participating in this auction with Venus," said Mariah Carey. "I'm glad that the proceeds from the sale of my 'legs' will benefit underprivileged children, and a charity that is near and dear to me."

Mariah Carey
Enjoying one of the most extraordinary years of her entire career, Mariah Carey's 9-times platinum Island Def Jam Records album The Emancipation of Mimi captured three Grammy awards and recently passed its one-year anniversary on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Mimi includes Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles, "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us," respectively -- which tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. Mimi has sold more than 9 million units worldwide to date, making it the biggest-selling album of 2005, and bringing Mariah's career sales to more than 160 million units world-wide.

Playboy Magazine: The 21st Question
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 10-Feb-2007, 1:15AM EST
The last word from Playboy's 20Q subject.

The 21st Question
Playboy: Where were you living when you got your first big break from Sony Records?

Carey: I was living on top of this place called Rascals on E. 22nd Street. There were about five girls in this one little apartment. The girl with the most money had her own bedroom but the rest of us slept on shabby mattresses on the floor. It was a rat-hole apartment. One time we had a flood. I used to love to take long, hot baths. I still do. There was no hot water and I was trying to let it heat up so I let it run for a minute. Well, it was more like a few hours. [Laughs] I fell asleep. We woke up in a fog and water. All my little stuffed animals were floating by us. The one thing that I'm still distraught over is the loss of my little bear Cuddles.

Who's Posing In Playboy?
Mariah Carey: Centerfold Model? Not quite, but the singer, 37, appears fully clothed on the cover of the March issue of Playboy (on newsstands now). Still sounds scandalous?

"It seemed like a really fun thing to do," Carey's manager tells Us of her decision to work with Playboy.

Carey's not the only celeb to be mentioned in the same breath as the R-rated magazine. Kelly Osbourne, 22, offered to go nude for the mag, but founder Hugh Hefner reportedly nixed the idea. After rumors of a Playboy offer circulated, Miss USA Tara Conner, 21, said she will not pose nude. Jessica Alba, 25, received an apology after her image appeared on a 2006 cover without her permission.

The Voice Vs. The Mouth
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 08-Feb-2007, 11:11PM EST
As soon as Mariah Carey announced that she would be featured in the March edition of 'Playboy' this year, eager peepers got in line early…only to find Carey was not to appear sans stretch pants. Naturally, those who only read the magazine for the articles were miffed at hearing about a layered lay-out, but add to the list of annoyed and angered one very vocal and vociferous voyeur, one king-of-all-media, Howard Stern.

However, it isn't Mariah's lack of nudity that's twisting Stern, but instead it's her pointed comments, blaming him for her mental breakdown in 2001: "Howard Stern had said a lot of mean stuff about me that morning, as he does about everybody every morning, and I think it really got to me. So I gained five pounds. It's not the end of the freakin' world. But I was exhausted, and I did collapse later. Then everybody blew it out of proportion."

Now Howard, who along with Mariah, grew up on Long Island, NY, so you might think that when a girl with big hair comes complaining, he wouldn't really take umbrage, but Howard has returned fire, and continues to comment. The last few days on his show, the man who broadcasts from space has demonstrated disgust with Mimi's disparagement, stating plainly that he felt justified in describing what he thought of her body, and that any celebrity who freaks out over his words wasn't that stable to start with.

He also claims she had called him on it, literally calling him and expressing outrage at someone she felt was a friend. Stern said they had met briefly in the past, but they hardly had a relationship. He says she was really aggravated, and he tried to play it off as "pulling pigtails" on a girl he couldn't have, but she remained unhappy and the conversation didn't end with any resolution. She has since stuck to her guns that the 'Sirius' star sent her to the loony bin.

Howard scoffs at her accusation, noting that she has been pointing fingers other ways in blame when it comes to her failures, flops and foibles. And after reading more of the 'Playboy' expose, we see that she has also figured out who caused the clunk and flunk of Glitter: "Glitter was such a bomb, but no one ever pointed out that it came out around September 11, 2001...". That's right - she's holding Osama bin Laden responsible for the tanking of her acting tour-de-force.

An appearance in 'Playboy' should be pretty and revealing, but what Mariah Carey is revealing about herself here is not really all that attractive.

Tennessee Filming in Estancia, New Mexico
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 08-Feb-2007, 5:45PM EST
Lights, camera, action!

The Blue Ribbon Bar and Grill in Estancia was temporarily transformed late last week into a set for a movie starring Mariah Carey and Ethan Peck.

Trucks, vans and trailers lined Estancia's main street and the bar was closed off from outside view with plastic sheets as shots were filmed for "Tennessee."

"It's a film about two brothers who make a trip cross-country in search of their father who they've been estranged from," said Reid Rosefelt, a publicist for Lee Daniels Entertainment, the production company behind the film.

The movie's characters take a trip from New Mexico to Tennessee in search of their father, according to a synopsis for the film on the company's Web site. On the way, the brothers meet Krystal— played by Carey— "an aspiring singer who flees an unhappy marriage to join them on their journey," the synopsis says.

Daniel Ortiz, who owns the Blue Ribbon Bar and Grill, said film crews worked in his bar from about 10:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

"Last year ... (the) Sci Fi Channel shot a sequel here ... and one of the gentlemen that was a locations guy talked to me then and told me he thought they might be coming back a little later for another movie," Ortiz said.

Ortiz said about 16 to 18 people came to survey the location to make sure it was suitable for the film.

"I guess they kinda liked this old, western setting," Ortiz said.

The bar closed Feb. 1 so the film crew could use the space, Ortiz said.

Ortiz said the experience was a positive one and ended up with a special present for his daughter's birthday, which was also Feb. 1.

"We managed to get a couple of shots with Mariah and they talked for a while," Ortiz said.

Ortiz said the production company was also utilizing a local church for a set on Monday.

The 10 Most Surprising Duets of the World
Singers are actually loners. But occasionally music also leads to crossing what nobody would have ever imagined possible.

Mariah & Whitney's "When You Believe" is the #1 Most Surprising Duet, this according to the latest issue of the German In Touch magazine.

#1 - Mariah Carey (37) & Whitney Houston (43)
Peace for God's sake
For years, both of them have been struggling to keep the lead at the top of the charts. No wonder then that it wasn't that easy to get the divas (and rivals) into the studio together, in front of the same microphone. Anyway, it did happen: In 1998, they performed the theme song of the animated feature "Moses - Prince Of Egypt" together. But to keep the peace not only on the record, but during the recording sessions as well, Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg (56) sent them a reminder: "Behave and get along with each other! Finally, it's all about a story from the Bible."

Mariah Not Nude Enough For Playboy
Dennis, our wonderful correspondent from Germany, contacted the staff of the German edition of the Playboy magazine asking them if they were going to include Mariah's story in one of their next issues. This is what they wrote in their response email:

Hello Dennis,
The pictures of Mariah Carey probably won't make it into the German issue of Playboy seeing that there are only two of them and these simply show her in underwear. No nude pictures as they usually can be found in our magazine.

It looks as if the lack of nudity is preventing Mariah's pictures from appearing in the German Playboy.

Rolling Stone: "Willie Nelson Is Asking To Be Mocked"
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2007, 8:55PM EST
Willie Nelson is awesome. This is a fact we were reminded of when we learned that the certified American icon would be collaborating with Mariah Carey on an as-of-yet undisclosed song/film combo.

Being Mariah Carey is something she can't help, but those who choose to work with her are just asking to be mocked. And yet...somehow we can imagine Nelson pulling this off. It must be his consummate irreverence, or the fact that he's always stoned, but something about that guy just makes it seem like literally everything he does is cool.

News From Serbia
Posted by Adi on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2007, 5:45PM EST
Nothing new has been reported in the Serbian press, but some daily newspapers like "Kurir" and "Blic" have written some nice stories about Mariah regarding her appearance in the March issue of "Playboy". Here is a translation of the article in "Blic":

Mariah in "Playboy"
American star on the cover of the famous magazine

The popular American pop star Mariah Carey can be found on the cover of the newest March issue of the men’s magazine. Along with pictures of the singer in a skin-colored bathing suit, the laughing Mariah reveals that she’s shy after all. "I flirt a lot, but people don’t understand, what it’s about. I am, in fact, very shy," says the 36 year-old singer who has sold more than 170 million records since her 1990 debut.

On the cover of the March issue of the magazine which will be available on Friday, Mariah was photographed in a skin-colored bathing suit. The picture’s caption says "Sex and Music". In her career, Mariah has sold over 170 million records around the world and from her biography, between houses and mansions, she points out that she posesses a small piano that once has belonged to Marilyn Monroe and which in 1999, she bought for US$600,000. Before she became famous, popular and rich, she had worked various jobs to keep her alive – as a hostess, an employee at a hair salon, and a waitress.

Mariah’s love life has always been a much discussed issue in American tabloids. For many years, she has been married to Tommy Mottola, one of the executive producers at Sony. They married in 1993 and divorced in 1998. She’s had short adventures with the Puerto Rican singer Luis Miguel, the New York Yankees baseball player Derek Jeter, and more recently, there have been rumors about connections to 50 Cent and Eminem, who supposedly is still after her (even though he just returned to his ex-wife for the third time).

Chart Flashback
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2007, 7:40AM EST
Entertainment Weekly's Chart Flashback review of Billboard's Top 10 songs for the week ending Feb. 8, 1992 places Mariah's "Can't Let Go" at #7.

7. "Can't Let Go," Mariah Carey
Which one is this? Is she on a jet ski in the video? No? Meh. Then I have no interest. KIDDING. I am KIDDING, Mariah-fanatic people. Please do not email me. I like this song fine. I mean, it's a little weird — I keep thinking it's a different song than it actually is, because something in the structure creates these places where it could jump off and go in a different direction, sprout another tune, but then it zigs where it seems like it should zag, and of course this point would be a lot stronger if I could identify any of those other songs it reminds me of, but I cannot, so now this is just a really long run-on sentence. Although, wait, is it reminding me a little of Al Green's "Love Is a Beautiful Thing"? Maybe? A little? Hmm. Anyway, it's pleasant, the backup singers are nice, the arrangement shows a great deal of restraint, and I like the key change especially, which is always worth bonus points. But now, let me ask you a serious question: Does anyone else find it really weird that every single time I do a '90s Chart Flashback, there's a Mariah Carey song on it? B+

The Universal Music Group will tomorrow (Feb. 7) announce Jermaine Dupri as president of urban music for Island Records, sources confirm to Billboard.com.

Dupri stepped down as president of urban music at Virgin in October 2006. At Virgin he was responsible for signing Dem Franchize Boyz and pacted with OutKast member Big Boi's Purple Ribbon imprint. Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" is losing its radio audience at a fairly rapid rate now, but it's still easily No. 1 for the 10th week on the national radio airplay chart, according to figures from Nielsen BDS, Arbitron and Radio & Records. The record for weeks at No. 1 is 16, held by Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" so Beyonce's got a long way to go.

Diva Debate Rages On
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 06-Feb-2007, 4:22AM EST
Feud fans are circulating a clip of Mariah Carey refusing comment on her old nemesis, Jennifer Lopez.

The "Emancipation of Mimi" singer was asked by a German television reporter what she thought of Beyoncé Knowles, and Carey gushed about how beautiful and sweet and talented Knowles is.

The interviewer then asked Carey's opinion of J. Lo, and Carey looked uncomfortable and said, "I don’t know her."

"I laughed out loud when she said 'I don’t know her' in regards to J-Lo," noted one viewer. "Considering J-Lo and her team stole a bunch of Mariah's songs years ago [songs that Carey was sampling were sampled by Lopez before Carey could release them], it's no wonder her answer was so snippy."

Note: MSNBC gossip columnist Jeanette Walls is referring to Mariah's interview with the German TV show, Taff. Watch a YouTube video above, courtesy of 112loveya.

Playboy Magazine: Mariah Carey, A Revealing 20Q
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 06-Feb-2007, 2:00AM EST
Do you know who has had the most number one songs on the Billboard Hot 100? Sure, the Beatles. Do you know who is second on that list and could match them this year? Mariah Carey, who has been on fire since she first broke out in the 1990s, just turned up the heat by striking a pose before the lens of famed photographers Markus Klinko and Indrani for our cover. In 20Q Carey welcomes you into her bedroom. "It was cool. She scheduled me for late at night, and we didn't get on the phone until 10 o'clock," interviewer Jason Buhrmester says. "She went up to her penthouse, shut the door and climbed into bed with a glass of warm milk and Frangelico. We talked for hours. It reminded me of being in high school and staying on the phone with a girl all night. I think the interview has a very intimate feel."

Mariah Carey
Our sexy cover girl with the big voice reveals all about that tiff with Eminem, acting goofy on MTV, her wardrobe malfunction and why, at heart, she's really a prude by Jason Buhrmester

Playboy: On the song "Get Your Number" from your album The Emancipation of Mimi, you sing about picking up a guy at a club and taking him home. Is that something you would ever do?
Carey: No. Here's the problem with me -- well, one of them. [laughs] I can be flirtatious when I don't mean to be. Let's say we are at a club, me and some friends, and we're hanging out with guys. If I'm sitting there and a song I like comes on, because I'm a singer, I start moving. It's just what I do. I don't realize I'm sitting there doing a video in somebody's face. I end up being very flirtatious, and people take it the wrong way. I'm very much a prude. But I don't want to disappoint people, so maybe we shouldn't discuss that.

Playboy: But on the song "Say Somethin'" you sing, "I'm over here looking at you/You're over there watching me too/Both painting pictures of how we'll kiss and f***." That doesn't sound prudish to us.
Carey: I didn't say that! There's an f and a few squiggly little letters. [laughs] And that was the producer Pharrell's idea. He just wanted to shock everybody. I was like, "All right, Pharrell, if this will make you happy." That was one of those little sexy moments.

Playboy: Last year you clashed with Eminem after he claimed the two of you had been romantically involved. Then he reportedly sent you a letter of apology. What did it say?
Carey: Something is clearly askew with him, and I'm not quite sure what it is. I just heard something else he recently said about me. I'm curious as to why he's so obsessed with me. I never got an apology letter, by the way; I don't know what they're talking about. Then again, I wasn't exactly searching my mailbox for it.

Playboy: Your mother is Irish American and your father was African American and Venezuelan. When did you realize being biracial made you different?
Carey: When I was in kindergarten. Our assignment was to draw our family. The two kindergarten teachers were really young. I don't think they meant any harm, but they were looking over my shoulder and giggling because I drew my family the way I saw them. My mom was peach, my brother and sister and I were in the middle somewhere, and my father was brown. They said to me, "You made a mistake, Mariah." I said, "No, that's my father. That's what he looks like." They didn't believe me. It was as though I'd taken a green crayon and made him green. All of a sudden they stopped laughing because I was confused and upset. Their laughter kind of trickled off, and they walked away and started whispering. They never looked at me the same way again.

Playboy: On "I Wish You Knew" you sing about having an inferiority complex. What makes you shy?
Carey: I think I have an all-around inferiority complex from growing up biracial and feeling as if I didn't fit in. I didn't feel pretty as a little girl. The entertainment business is an extension of high school, so I'm still my own little class clown. Maybe I overcompensate by having a big personality. I'm usually pretty boisterous now.

Playboy: How old were you when you started singing?
Carey: I was four. My mom used to sing with the New York City Opera. She made her debut at Lincoln Center and had gone to Juilliard. I think by the time I came around she wasn't singing professionally, but she still practiced here and there. She tells the story of when she was doing the opera Rigoletto, and at one point I corrected her because she'd made a mistake. That's when she realized I had a good ear.

Playboy: At what point did you know you wanted to make singing your career?
Carey: From the point I knew one could have a career, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I wanted to be either a singer or a genie. [laughs] When I realized that being a genie wasn't an actual option, I went with singing.

Playboy: How did you start your career in music?
Carey: When I was little I auditioned for Annie. I wanted to be in Annie because it was the big show on Broadway. I was too tall, but I'm kind of thinking I was too ethnic as well. [laughs] I auditioned with a black wig. Even the wig color wasn't right which is weird because my nana on my father's side had a penchant for red wigs. I probably could have borrowed one of hers, but nobody thought of it.

Playboy: If American Idol had existed when you were young, would you have auditioned?
Carey: Remember Star Search? That was around, and I didn't audition for it. I didn't think it was for me. I know everybody thinks I'm the poster child for American Idol, but I was really shy when I first came out as a performer. My mother wasn't a stage mom. She was more of a hippie.

Playboy: Randy Jackson from American Idol has worked as your director for several years. Did you ever imagine he'd be a star?
Carey: Randy Jackson -- well, now we have to call him Randy Jackson of American Idol -- had worked with me since my first record. I've known him for so long, and now he's a huge star. It's just weird to me. We'll get mobbed walking down the street. You know how the band is introduced at a show? My little joke used to be that he was Michael Jackson's brother, and the crowd would believe me and go crazy.

Playboy: You have a lot of wardrobe changes during your show. Have you ever had a malfunction?
Carey: Oh please, there have been so many. [laughs] On this tour there was a really bad malfunction when my top popped open. It was this little top with a hook and eye on the front. It was a nightmare. The top was so tight that night because we girls have moments when the top might be tighter, but I caught it, and that's how you know a pro. I had to continue singing as well. So the microphone was in one hand, and with the other hand I scooped the upper region together and kept singing the words, "Stop the track! Stop the track! Stop it!" They did not understand. I had to go back and come out in a fabulous dress and tell the crowd, "Guys, I'm sorry, but we would have had a major malfunction, and I'm not going to be the one responsible for that happening."

Playboy: What would we have heard on the demo that got you signed?
Carey: I think it sounded really good, actually, I always wanted to work. I would record and write all night and then go to school. I was on my own. I was in high school, and I would drive into the city and try to drive home and always get lost. I'd wind up in the Bronx or somewhere in Queens, not knowing where I was going at all. I don't have any sense of direction.

Playboy: You were a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr when she gave your demo to Tommy Mottola from Sony Music Entertainment. How did that happen?
Carey: I was pretty broke. I was working for Brenda, but that was an on-again, off-again thing. In the winter when I didn't have a coat, she and her mom brought me a winter coat and some food. They felt bad for me. I was this girl who would sing and write songs. At one point Brenda asked me if I wanted her to record some of the songs from my demo, but I said, "No, I'm going to be recording these songs." I always believed I was going to do this. There was never a lack of faith or determination or belief in myself. When Tommy Mottola first saw me, he was like, "Who's that?" Brenda told him I was a backup singer and her friend and gave him my tape. I'll never forget that moment. It was one of the destined-to-be moments, like from an after-school special.

Playboy: Mottola signed you to Sony, and you two later married but then divorced after four years, which led to struggles with your record label. What was going on?
Carey: Well, let's face it, as the professional relationship turned into a personal one, it all became a complete and total mess. When we met I didn't know he was married. I didn't know he had kids. I didn't know the folklore about him. People would tell me stuff and then be like, "Oops! You didn't know that?" It was weird. Once I became a celebrity, Tommy decided we were going to live in the boondocks. In a way it protected me, but then it got to be too much protection. I guess because I grew up in a pretty dysfunctional environment I allowed myself to deal with things most people wouldn't. My tolerance level for dysfunction was really high. I refer to the home we shared as Sing Sing because all I did was sing, sing, sing. It really wasn't a stone groove, as I would say. [laughs] I think I would have still been in the relationship because that's the way I am as far as loyalty. I would have remained in that relationship had it been one inch less confining. Even though I was miserable in my personal life, I lived vicariously through the girl on TV wearing Pumas and jean shorts and a flannel.

Playboy: Where is your wedding ring now?
Carey: It somehow miraculously became earrings. Then I lost them. I lost them in Amsterdam, no less.

Playboy: In 2001 it was reported that you had suffered an emotional breakdown. What really happened?
Carey: What happened was that people made a big deal of when my old publicist pulled the microphone out of my hand because I was venting about Howard Stern. [laughs] No one knew it, actually. Howard Stern had said a lot of mean stuff about me that morning, as he does about everybody every morning, and I think it really got to me. I handle him pretty well, but that particular day it was about how I looked fat. Calm down. So I gained five pounds. It's not the end of the freakin' world. Maybe what he was talking about was relevant; maybe it was time to lose a few pounds. But I was exhausted, and I did collapse later. Then everybody blew it out of proportion.

Playboy: A big deal was made of the messages you recorded for your website and an appearance on TRL during which you handed our Popsicles and performed a brief striptease.
Carey: I thought it was strange that the legitimate press talked about TRL and things geared toward 14-year-old kids. Come on -- I've been on MTV, having food fights and doing stupid stuff for I don't even know how long. That's what it's about. It's not about taking oneself seriously. It's not a Barbara Walters moment. It's not Larry King or Charlie Rose. It was amazing to me how things got blown out of proportion because there was nothing else to talk about. And then my movie Glitter was such a bomb, but no one ever pointed out that it came out around September 11, 2001.

Playboy: When was the last time you watched Glitter?
Carey: I try not to. I try to avoid it. Actually, I don't mind it. There are moments that make me laugh, and I don't care. I was fortunate to do Wisegirls right after that, with Mira Sorvino. A lot of people didn't see it, but it received a standing ovation at Sundance and did very well critically. It was an amazing experience for me because I got to play a character role. I did a lot of ad-libbing and worked with an Academy Award-winning actress.

Playboy: You bought Marilyn Monroe's childhood piano for more than $600,000. What made you want it?
Carey: I had to fight for it. It was pretty cool. I'd never done any type of bidding on anything before. My world-famous decorator was on the phone, asking me how high I wanted to go, and I kept telling him, "I have to have this piano!" That piano is a symbolic thing. In Marilyn's autobiography there is a chapter called "How I Rescued a White Piano." It was the only thing she had from her childhood. I know it was expensive, but it was important to me. It's in my will that if anything should happen to me, the piano goes to a museum, which is where I think it should have gone in the first place.

Playboy: This year you'll have your star added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. If you could rearrange the stars, whose would you like yours to be next to?
Carey: You mean I can't move them all around? Come on! I'm going to request a reshuffling, then we can talk about it.

Slant's Grammy Comments About Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 05-Feb-2007, 4:21PM EST
Slant has weighed in with its Grammy predictions and comments. Here are some of the interesting comments that relate to Mariah:

Song Of The Year
Sal Cinquemani: People seem to love Mary's single, but a win for that song would be a real slap in the face to Mariah and "We Belong Together," without which "Be Without You" wouldn't be.
Jonathan Keefe: True, but does NARAS really feel so bad about slapping Mariah around? But, like Mariah last year, I think Blige will be shut out of the General Field awards.

Best Female R&B Vocal Performance
Sal: Who's going to win, Mary's copy of "We Belong Together" or Mariah's?
Jonathan: Mary will still win because she's overdue, but I do wonder if we're underestimating Natalie Cole.

As previously reported, Mariah is nominated in two categories, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, both for "Don't Forget About Us."

The 49th Annual Grammy Awards will broadcast live from the Staples Center, Los Angeles Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007 on CBS from 8 - 11:30 pm (ET/PT).

On Second Thought: Mariah Carey – Merry Christmas
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 05-Feb-2007, 11:26AM EST
It's not too late to talk about Christmas especially when it concerns Mariah Carey! Here's an album review written by Stylus Magazine's Barry Schwarts on Dec. 21, 2006. Great read!

For better or worse, we here at Stylus, in all of our autocratic consumer-crit greed, are slaves to timeliness. A record over six months old is often discarded, deemed too old for publication, a relic in the internet age. That's why each week at Stylus, one writer takes a look at an album with the benefit of time. Whether it has been unjustly ignored, unfairly lauded, or misunderstood in some fundamental way, we aim with On Second Thought to provide a fresh look at albums that need it.

Wondering why Christmas missed us: Wikipedia defines "Christmas Envy" as, "In psychoanalytic thought, the desire of Jews or people of other non-Christian denominations to celebrate and enjoy all the non-religious traditions and customs associated with Christmas. See also Hanukkah Bush, Nativity Menorah, Star of David Made of a Bunch of Crucifixes, Neil Diamond."

Now, even if I might happen to be the person who submitted Christmas Envy's Wikipedia entry, this definition remains true. Christmas Envy is a most powerful force, often afflicting our more Semitic-ly inclined children at an early age:

Mommy? How come they don't celebrate Hanukkah on Home Improvement? How come our house is so freaking dark? How come all the other children in school are so very happy... and we are so very sad?

I live in the suburbs of Long Island (which is redundant, of course). Right now the air is cool, the grass is frozen, and house after house after house is lit up like the freaking sun, each decorated with successive tiny bursts of reds, greens, blues, purples, yellows, and maybe, if you're lucky, a big fat inflatable illuminated Santa Claus. Jewish grandmothers will typically scoff at such displays as gaudy or tasteless or, more likely, "goyim nachas" (which roughly translates to "shit that makes Christian people happy") but I don't know, it looks pretty awesome to me. Because then we arrive at our house: a bay window with nine mostly unlit orange bulbs. This is the festival of lights? Seems like they're beating us at our own game.

So let's put this out there: Hanukkah isn't much fun. (And if you really want to know, we don't even really play with dreidels. In fact, dreidels don't even exist; it's simply a myth conceived by the Jewish liberal media to make you think we're not just sitting at home doing nothing in the dark.) To its credit, Christmas makes a great effort to include everyone regardless, spreading cheer and good will toward men and the such. But there will always exist, at least among the "Chosen People," this inescapable feeling of exclusion, an exclusion from joy. Christmas Envy manifests itself like so: First you resent it, then you realize you resent it because you're jealous, then you do it a little bit, and then you feel guilty. Congratulations! Now you're "a self-hating Jew no better than Larry King," as your grandfather would say. There are no winners. You can't win. But, I'm red and green with Christmas Envy and there's nothing I can do about it. For this, I mostly blame Mariah Carey.

Which brings us to today's topic: I have a sneaking suspicion Merry Christmas might be the definitive Mariah Carey album.

Regardless of your religion, if you've ever worked in a drugstore or a mall during the holiday season, while Christmas music is incessantly pumped through the Muzak, you begin to develop a certain appreciation for the stuff. Now, to be fair, even to the most holiday-spirited Christmas music can be insufferable: monotonous sleighbells, unintelligible choral hymns, overly expressive anonymous vocals, irritating novelty songs. But every now and then an undeniable gem queues up on the PA and, as a stock boy for CVS Pharmacy, you must cherish these moments. These are the songs that make work bearable, tiny beacons of light in the shadows of Muzak. Of course we're talking about John Lennon's "Happy X-Mas (War is Over)," Darlene Love's "All Alone for Christmas" (Home Alone 2, what!), Bing Crosby and David Bowie's "Little Drummer Boy," Nat King Cole's rendition of "A Christmas Song," The Chipmunk's "Christmas Don't Be Late," and, reluctantly, Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time." (Maybe once they played Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis" but it sure as hell didn't happen on your shift.)

But 200 years from now 16-year-olds will teleport to their jobs at the mall. They will clock in using their retina, re-stock and straighten the aisles through telekinesis, maybe fold some pants, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" will come on...

And all work will stop.

History has a funny way of disregarding Christmas albums by contemporary artists as mere stocking-stuffers or contractual obligation fillers, often assuming they've been recorded, mixed, packaged, and released for consumption with the same amount of effort it takes to snowblow your driveway. This might be right. I doubt John Denver and the Muppets or Ashanti were busting their ass to drop a classic on the masses, but in the case of Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas the argument simply does not and should not apply. It... transcends!

Released shortly after the multi-platinum success of Music Box, Merry Christmas is Mariah Carey at her absolute creative and commercial peak, her voice still a marvel, her songs and performances still undeniably brilliant. Sadly, Merry Christmas is also in some ways the climax in a career that, beginning with Music Box's follow-up Daydream, would find Carey devolving into a glorified hook singer, almost completely forsaking the straight vocal pop that made her a superstar for the limiting melodic palette of hip-hop and R&B that has never really suited her talents. As we know, she would later fail miserably, lose her f**king mind, flaunt breasts so spread apart they look like Captain Crunch's hovering and disembodied eyebrows, then lose her mind again (then come back to prominence 10 freaking years later; that's really neither here nor there). Point is: this is a far cry from the girl dressed like Mrs. Claus frolicking in the snow.

The closest we'll get to the traditional gospel album Carey will probably never get to do, Merry Christmas finds Carey performing elevated, near-definitive interpretations of songs that have been sung by the majority of the solar system; songs like "Silent Night," "O Holy Night," "Jesus Born on This Day," even "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"; songs that Carey somehow refreshes and makes her own.

She fares even better on the album's more contemporary tracks, all of which are surprisingly heavily indebted to Spector-pop. On Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," she's backed by her somehow-never-superfluous gospel choir, and employs all 27 or so of her octaves for the song's perfect '60s progression; she sings "The snow's coming down" with the same enthusiasm as children who've been praying for a snow day. For the Carey original "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" you get Carey and piano and some strings for a genuinely understated ballad, which, all things considered might feature her most beautiful vocal performance ever.

Which brings us back to "All I Want For Christmas Is You." To say this song is an instant classic somehow doesn't capture its amazingicity; it's a modern standard: joyous, exhilarating, loud, with even a hint of longing (ooh longing!). She sings, "I don't want a lot for Christmas / I won't even wish for snow," such a beautiful phrase delivered with full sincerity over rolling pianos, spine-squashing tympanis, philharmonic strings, and a quasi-wall of sound—and Mariah's gorgeous voice bursts through it all. F**k, why haven't I been celebrating Christmas?!

Dr. Seuss was mad Jewish, but he wrote in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, "Welcome Christmas while we stand, heart to heart and hand in hand." That's pretty nice. He figured that s**t out. There's no guilt. No guilt in being a Jew who envies Christmas, or being a Jew who enjoys Christmas music, or being a bad*** (as I am) and still liking Mariah Carey, because, all this stuff is freaking awesome.

Mariah One of Grammy's 10 Biggest Upsets
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 05-Feb-2007, 10:16AM EST
According to Entertainment Weekly's Grammy's 10 Biggest Upsets, Mariah's bid in 1995, when she went 0-for-6, is the 9th historic shocker from the music industry's always unpredictable awards show. Here's what they had to say about Mariah:

1995: Mariah Carey goes 0-for-6
Mariah Carey has probably lined the butterfly-decorated walls of her apartment with countless platinum plaques. But she's got plenty of room for more Grammys, as she's only snagged five over a 16-year career (for comparison's sake, Norah Jones won that many in a single night in 2002). 1995 was a particularly bad year for Mimi. Nominated in six different categories (for her album Daydream, hit single "Fantasy," and Boyz II Men collaboration "One Sweet Day"), Carey was passed over every time, for a variety of acts - some older (Annie Lennox) , some younger (Alanis Morissette), and some more Irish (the Chieftans with Van Morisson).

Pub Bars Fan for Overplaying Mariah on Jukebox
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 05-Feb-2007, 4:16AM EST
Mariah Carey fan Jeff Donovan has been barred from his local pub for playing her songs on the jukebox 20 times a day.

For six years Jeff's constant barrage of her hits - including All I Want for Christmas which he played all year round - tormented other regulars and landlord Roy Dann.

Jeff, 35, who is single, said: "I love Mariah and listen to her over and over again, but other people obviously didn't share my musical taste.

"At the start when the landlord threatened to bar me I thought he was joking. All my mates drink there. I'm gutted. I don't want to find another local, I like this one."

The chef added: "I've tried appealing to Roy to let me back in, but he's adamant I am barred for life."

Roy, 32, of the Gordon Arms in Southampton, said: "To start with we found it amusing. I actually used to like Mariah before. But the other customers just had enough of listening to the same songs over and over again.

"I gave him plenty of warnings but he just laughed and told me the customer is always right.

"All the regulars used to whinge at him to stop, but he wouldn't listen and never put any other songs on.

"I don't care what he says now, he's not coming back into my pub."

Mariah's Playboy Confessions
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 04-Feb-2007, 6:55PM EST

Mariah Carey is many things, but a shrinking violet isn't one of them.

In the March issue of Playboy, the 37-year-old singer talks openly about her 2001 breakdown, the Eminem dating drama, wardrobe malfunctions and how she actively avoids her own movie.

On Her Breakdown in 2001:
"What happened was that people made a big deal of when my old publicist pulled the microphone out of my hand because I was venting about Howard Stern. Howard Stern had said a lot of mean stuff about me that morning, as he does about everybody every morning, and I think it really got to me. So I gained five pounds. On the Eminem Apology:
"Something is clearly askew with him, and I'm not quite sure what it is. I just heard something else he recently said about me. I'm curious as to why he's so obsessed with me. I never got an apology letter, by the way; I don't know what they're talking about. Then again, I wasn't exactly searching my mailbox for it."

On American Idol:
"I know everybody thinks I'm the poster child for American Idol, but I was really shy when I first came out as a performer....Randy Jackson of American Idol has worked with me since my first record. On Endless Wardrobe Malfunctions:

The top was so tight that night because we girls have moments when the top might be tighter, but I caught it, and that's how you know a pro."

On Glitter:
"I try to avoid it. Actually, I don't mind it. There are moments that make me laugh, and I don't care.... Glitter was such a bomb, but no one ever pointed out that it came out around September 11, 2001."

They look almost identical and have almost the same name, but they can't stand each other at all. Singer Mariah Carey has sued porn star Mary Carey. The reason for Mariah taking action? Mariah Carey is looking smokin' in Playboy and E! News got all the behind-the-scenes details straight from the people who shot Mariah's sexy spread.

Markus: "Mariah's in great shape. She works out. She's a very, very hot girl. Mariah's always sexy. She's a fashion icon."
Indrani: "She works out all the time."

Wearing a cut-out, one-piece suit, Mariah glitters in gold with every curve perfectly in place.

Markus: "I think gold works great on Mariah, I mean, she's the golden girl."
Indrani: "That was actually our stylist. He has always found amazing things for her."

But sorry, fellas. This is as much Mariah as you're gonna get.

Tour Interview: Mariah Talks About Her Dancers
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 03-Feb-2007, 2:07AM EST
Mariah talks about her dancers on The Adventures of Mimi tour in an exclusive video interview at MariahCarey.com Tour section's Virtual Ticket.

Some bits from the funny interview are below.

Mariah says sometimes she and her dancers play jokes on each other. She's mum about what they are, but teases, "We'll see when the special comes out."

Mariah talks about the thong that dancer Michelle wore in one show, saying "the buttocks was really hanging out, like a lot of meat was being featured."

Mariah says dancers Michelle and Rachel together are like "Milk and Chocolate." (Laughs hard) "I didn't mean it that way! I'm like milk and chocolate! M.C. What do you think it stands for?! I didn't mean to give that secret away."

Mariah says, "The dancers had these ensembles that were made to look very sexy, you know, Chicago-ish a little." She continues, "See I don't need them [garters]... the leg by itself (slaps leg), that would be the rarity, I don't put that stuff on there." (laughs)

Mariah in Playboy Interview: "Eminem is obsessed with me"
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 02-Feb-2007, 9:54AM EST
Mariah Carey looks so steamy in the March issue of Playboy, she might even be hotter than Eminem's head. "Something is clearly askew with him," Carey tells the mag, "and I'm not quite sure what it is."

The pair clashed last year when Carey - who doesn't take it all off for Playboy but still shows a Mimi-licious amount of skin - denied she'd ever had a relationship with the "Slim Shady" rapper.

He retaliated, calling her a liar on the air and in some mighty foul lyrics on his December 2006 release, "The Re-Up."

"I just heard something else he recently said about me," Carey says. "I'm curious as to why he's so obsessed with me. I never got an apology letter, by the way. ... Then, again, I wasn't exactly searching my mailbox for it."

Tennessee Update: Mariah in Albuquerque's South Valley
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 01-Feb-2007, 6:21PM EST

Tennessee Being Filmed in Albuquerque
At a recently closed convenience store in Albuquerque, New Mexico's South Valley, trailers are packed like sardines in the small parking lot. The scene at Sonny's Mini Mart is well, a scene, and I am confident Sonny’s asphalt has never had this much traffic. We snapped these shots the morning of January 24, 2007.

ABQblogs.com was told the film, Tennessee, starring Mariah Carey, James D'Arcy and Ethan Peck, is filming at a "small farm house" off Isleta Boulevard, near the shuttered Sonny's. Melissa Benoist, the Denver Post's Ovation Award winner for best younger actor of 2006, has also landed a role in the film.

Tennessee Strives to be a Film Devoid of Glitter
A press release from the Governor's office [Read full text here], stated, Tennessee follows the path of two brothers who must return to their hometown in East Tennessee from Albuquerque to look for their estranged, abusive father when one of them is diagnosed with leukemia and desperately needs a life-saving bone marrow transplant.

ABQblogs.com has learned Mariah Carey will be signing on the Tennessee soundtrack. According to the New York Daily News, the Grammy award-winning songbird trained with a dialect coach to develop the twang and drawl that she needed for her new role.

Put this movie on your must-see list, as yet another film will have scenes from our own backyard. Sonny would be proud.
