Billboard in The '90s: Lots and Lots of Mariah Carey
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 25-Feb-2011, 12:35PM EST
Billboard magazine is celebrating the 1,000 Hot 100 #1s in its latest issue, and in an article dedicated to the '90s, Mariah is described as the decade's undisputed hitmaker:

The '90s
Mariah Carey. Boyz II Men. Hip-hop. 'Candle in the Wind.'

The bump of hip-hop and thrash of grunge may dominate our sonic memory of the '90s, yet the hits that bookended the decade were soaked in smooth. [...] While the album charts heralded the rise of "alternative" through hip-hop's spreading popularity and rock's rediscovered grit, the singles chart walked a different beat. Among the No. 1s, there was no Nirvana, no Dr. Dre or Snoop Dogg, no Pearl Jam, no Wu-Tang Clan. There was, however, Mariah Carey. Lots and lots of Mariah Carey.

It's only fitting that the decade's undisputed hitmaker would also be the first legitimately new star of the '90s. Holdovers from the '80s dominated the first half of 1990. Then, in early August, Carey began a four-week run with "Vision of Love," the first of a record 14 No. 1s for the decade, including "One Sweet Day," her holiday season collaboration with Boyz II Men in 1995. "Day" spent 16 weeks at No. 1 and the two acts' dual success seemed apropos; during the '90s, nearly one of every six weeks saw either artist with the top single.

Their success was a stunning sign of how far R&B had come since the relative dol-drums of the '80s.

By decade's end, some familiar faces still held on. There was Carey, of course, with Jay-Z riding shotgun on her late-1999 single "Heartbreaker."

None of the members of the judging panel for the US version of X Factor have been confirmed, but Sharon Osbourne is certain that Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole will feature.

She reckons Mariah Carey will complete the judging line up, saying: 'Simon's going to decide at the last minute who he wants to complete the panel, but Mariah Carey's still in the frame.'

The US singer, who is currently pregnant with twins, has been repeatedly linked to a role on the show.

CLAIM: Mariah and Nick Spend $1 Million on Twins
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 23-Feb-2011, 12:00PM EST
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's twins are getting an early taste of the tabloid treatment – and they haven't even arrived yet!

Star magazine claims Carey and Cannon "have spent close to $1 million" preparing for their new son and daughter. A so-called "insider" for Star says, "Mariah's spent $150,000 alone on their wardrobe. She loves Baby Dior, Armani Junior's baby line and Escada Baby. She's addicted!" The mom-to-be is also supposedly hoarding custom-made cribs and strollers.

But that's not even the most outrageous claim.

"Mariah and Nick equipped the nursery with a $250,000 state-of-the-art Bose stereo system," alleges the tab's "insider."

Wait. We're supposed to believe that anyone – even a very wealthy couple – would spend a quarter of a million dollars on a nursery's sound system?

It sounds like Star decided to put a $1 million price tag on the twins without thinking through what, exactly, Carey and Cannon could possibly spend that much money on for two newborns. That's when the mag had to get creative – and totally inaccurate. A rep for Carey calls the Star story "absurd."

Mariah Still Holds Highest 2nd Week Rank in Pop Songs
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 22-Feb-2011, 6:53PM EST
Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" becomes one of just eight tracks to reach the top 10 in a mere two weeks on the Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay survey.

Songs to Reach the Pop Songs Top 10 in Two Chart Weeks:

Artist, Title, Chart Move Into Top 10, Chart Date, Peak Pos.
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way," 14-6, March 5, 2011, tbd
Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me," 16-10, Feb. 5, 2011, No. 3 to-date
Eminem, "Just Lose It," 33-10, Oct. 16, 2004, No. 5
'N Sync, "Pop," 21-10, June 9, 2001, No. 5
Madonna, "Frozen," 16-10, March 14, 1998, No. 4
The Rembrandts, "I'll Be There for You," 22-10, June 3, 1995, No. 1 (eight weeks)
Mariah Carey, "Dreamlover," 12-4, Aug. 21, 1993, No. 1 (eight weeks)
Janet Jackson, "That's the Way Love Goes," 29-9, May 8, 1993, No. 1 (nine weeks)

Rising 14-6, "Born" registers the highest second-week Pop Songs rank since Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" rocketed 12-4 in its second frame. "Born" likewise trails only "Dreamlover" for highest debut in the chart's archives.

Update: New "Mariah Carey" BMI-Registered Songs
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 22-Feb-2011, 5:04PM EST
We received a confirmation that Mariah is NOT, in any way, affiliated with the songs registered on BMI by a certain William Edmund Young. Since this is the case, we have decided to remove our earlier posts to avoid further confusion.

One may wonder how a reputable entity as BMI can get infiltrated by unscrupulous people wanting the dire attention, but it can happen. It happened. We learned from BMI's AVP of Corporate Communications Hanna Pantle, "Anyone can join BMI, it's free. After you join you can register your works." A certain William Edmund Young took advantage of the free membership and registered many songs including 9 (to date) bearing the name Mariah Carey as a co-writer. One registered song even has the title "Save The Day," a confirmed title of a Mariah-Jermaine Dupri collaborated charity song. According to Hanna, "we are investigating this and hope to have some news later this week."

Meanwhile, some real and exciting news today from Mariah herself on Twitter! "I start writing for my new album this week-but its just the beginning..: )"

Mariah Live on HSN, Show #4
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 16-Feb-2011, 7:09AM EST
The final show of Mariah Carey Collection Live from L.A. on HSN which aired from 9pm to 11pm on Friday, February 11 can be downloaded in full below.

Mariah on HSN - Feb. 11, 2011, 9pm-11pm Show
Download: [ Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 ]

Some tidbits from the 9pm to 11pm show:

• Vocal Booth. Mariah's pink & black vocal booth was shown. "I did record most of my Christmas album, all the vocals in there. I just was writing the other night a brand-new song. I'm very excited to get back to making music. Really."

• "When Do The Bells Ring For Me," New Mariah-Tony Bennett Song. Mariah reveals "When Do The Bells Ring For Me" as the title of the song that she and Tony Bennett have recorded together. "Tony Bennett was here - in the guest room. I was so embarrassed. He is a legend and here I am like, 'Okay, let's do the duet in the guest bedroom.' It's mortifying but he was great. He was so nice, he was so cool. We did a song called 'When Do The Bells Ring For Me' which is for his new Duets album. His original Duets album was humongously successful and so he's doing it again and he's got a whole bunch of stuff planned for his birthday. 85 years old this year. He's still singing so great. His voice is amazing."

• Cooking Photo Album. Mariah calls herself "Jack of All Trades" and talks about a cookbook she's been writing. "Everything you experience goes into your art or whatever it is you're working on as a creative person. That's why you're looking at my book of the foods. The last time the people from HSN came over and I had made this Pecan pie. I made Pecan pie from scratch because that's Nick's favorite pie and people were like, 'You're right, you did not cook.' But it's true. I gave it to some of the guys and girls from HSN and it was, from what I hear, a hit. The book is not written yet but this is just me documenting the recipes. You see how much I'm doing."

• Mariah Loves "Tower of Terror." Show host Adam is working on Valentine's day at HSN in Florida and Mariah suggests Disney World if he and his wife have not decided where to go. "You know they're going to have something festive there." Mariah said she was just there last December but couldn't go on the rides because of her condition. What's Mariah's favorite Disney ride? She tells Adam "TOT" ("Tower of Terror"). "It's the world's best ride. It's amazing. I think I might hold the world's record for going on that ride. Seriously!"

• Caught on Camera: Mariah Lying Back on Sofa. Mariah was not happy getting caught on camera while lying back on the sofa during the opening of the show's 2nd segment. "Uh-oh, why are you showing me? You guys, I'm thanking you and you promised not to show me like this. Stop it. I thought it was a voice-over. Cut! You're foiling me now [laughs]." She then sits up and says, "I'm good now if you want (to show me)."

• Can't Get Enough of "We Belong Together." The song was playing in the background, and Mariah talked a little about it. "I'm sitting here listening to it wanting to sing but I'm not going to do that. I still really love the song and it's so funny they said it's the 'Song of the Decade' because it came out in 2005 but it lasted so long on the charts and then for the years just like it's just now 2011 but it was 'Song of the Decade' which was pretty amazing."

• Early Fascination with Shoes. Mariah tells the story of when her fascination with shoes began. "That's a two-part answer. When I was 4 years old, I was at my babysitter's house (my mom worked a couple of jobs). My babysitter had this beautiful lavender high heels and somehow as a 4-year-old I took them out of her closet and I wore them traipsing to and fro in her garden. My feet were always like permanently in a high heel stance for some reason. I took her shoes out of her closet which was a horrible thing to do but I didn't know any better when I was four. She came outside and she saw that I had broken the heel off of one of her shoes, like her treasured lavender heels. But I'm pretty sure I must have been a little obsessed with shoes for me to go into an adult closet and take the shoes and walk around in a rocky garden. I've never told that story before (an HSN exclusive). And then years later, after high school, I was waitressing and walking around in the snow in New York. I had one pair of shoes which used to be my Mom's and they were leather. She's got a smaller foot than I do. They stretched out, and I'm walking. It was a really bad winter. So I'm walking from work in these leather shoes that had holes in them. It was a struggle. It was a time I would look back on because I always had a lot of faith about my career and just my ability to do what I wanted to do in my life. I had faith and I still do. Anyway, those shoes were the only shoes I had for like a year and then when I finally got some money and I'd started working, I just started collecting shoes. I didn't realize that when people would buy shoes for a photo shoot, if you don't bring them home, the stylist or someone else is going to go home with those and you paid for them. But if you're that young and you're starting out as a teenager you don't realize that's happening so after I realized it, I just kept the shoes. And thus we have two 'substantial' closets."

• Not Too Unique Names for Babies. Asked if she's decided on names yet for the twins, Mariah said, "I can't say but yes. We actually talked about this a long time ago. I just have a thing where I grew up with an unusual name. Now more people have the name but when I was growing up, nobody could pronounce the name. They never had it on the name tags or little things that you want to buy so I always felt like it's another way of me feeling different from everybody aside from just my ethnicity and moving so many times. Woe it's me but here we are. And so, we don't want to make their names too unusual. Even though now anything goes pretty much. Basically, you could name them 'shoe' [laughs] and that would be acceptable. But I won't be doing that."

• Charity Song. Mariah talks about the upcoming charity song [which we later found out is called "Save The Day"] that she's co-written with Jermaine Dupri: "Me and JD and Randy Jackson and Big Jim Wright, we are all in there creating something that's going to be out soon. It's going to be a collaboration with a lot of other artists and this is something for a bigger cause than the traditional thing. That's going to be out soon but I'm loving that and I can't wait to put it out there, to finish what I'm doing and everything."

• Baby Shower For Fans. Mariah says the HSN show may be "my final hour on TV probably until July. I may do one moment - a Baby Shower moment. A friend of mine called me about something. We'll see if they can put that together but it's not going to be anything like, I'm definitely having my shower, it just might be another thing 'for the fans' only. We'll see what happens. We're trying to make it happen."

Mariah Live on HSN, Show #3

Here's show #3 of "Mariah Carey Collection Live from L.A." on HSN that aired from 6pm-7pm on Friday, February 11.

Mariah on HSN - Feb. 11, 2011, 6pm-7pm Show
Download: [ Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 ]

Some tidbits from the 6pm-7pm show:

• Show host Amy is back and opens the show from Mariah's Moroccan room. Mariah: "I saw you were sitting outside in our little Moroccan area. I haven't even sat out there yet. It's a work in progress."

Pictured below: Amy in the Moroccan room, HSN camera set-up, and Nick's basketball court serving as a cafeteria.

• Mariah talked about shopping for nursery items the day before which she said was "the most fun thing ever." She tells Amy, "It was so cute. There's so much adorable stuff but then I got so exhausted just being at the store down the street. I know it sounds dramatic. They don't prepare you for what this is. Nobody tells you especially that we're having two here. Everything is double."

• Cha-Cha's two new puppies Jill and Squeak, are briefly shown on camera. Mariah tells the story of how the 5-day-old puppies are now situated in her bedroom. "I have them sleeping in a cute little bed upstairs next to me. But it's just, to see how this dog (Cha-Cha), she's like 'Mother of the Year' upstairs." Mariah cuts her story short, "We're not selling puppies but I just had to share it with the people," and continues with the day's jewelry special.

• The Lollipop Bling trio scents will be featured on Mariah's HSN Summer showcase in July.

• Mariah talks about her vocal booth on wheels. "It's custom-made. It's black & pink, the inside is pink so it's more like a female recording area. But it's really comfortable. I can bring that booth to wherever I want so I could travel with that. I like to record... in Italy, in the Bahamas, all over the place. All you need really is an iPad 'cause you can record your whole album just with an iPad and a vocal booth."

• Talking about constantly playing music to the twins. "I sing to them now. I play music for them now. They have this little belly band that you can put the iPod on and you can just play whatever. So I play them a lot. They respond to different songs."

• Mariah greets her mom Patricia: "I think my mom is watching. Hi! It's actually her birthday the day after Valentine's Day so I have to figure out something for that. She keeps telling me about the snow and how they just keep getting this ton of snow."

• Amy asked Mariah about the sex of her babies. "We just told everybody it's a boy and a girl. Ain't that great? It's so exciting. I never thought that I'd be doing this. I never really thought about it. You grow up and you're playing with dolls and everything, I never did that. I played with Barbies. I never had baby dolls. That wasn't my thing. But now, it totally changes your outlook on life, your perspective about the world, about big girl issues... so it's pretty amazing."

No Nannies For Twins
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 09-Feb-2011, 8:39PM EST
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon don't plan to hire nannies to help them look after their babies. The couple — who are expecting twins together, a boy and a girl, later this year — plan to be hands-on parents.

"Nah. We're not for all of the nannies and stuff," Nick told America's In Touch Weekly magazine. "Nothing against anyone who is, but my wife wants to be as hands-on as possible."

Nick recently revealed that Mariah has come up with a unique way to deal with her pregnancy cravings.

"I think she's figured out brilliantly that when she craves stuff she doesn't necessarily have to eat it," he said. "When she cooks, she cooks everything from scratch and then the cravings go away. So I get stuck with eating all the food. I'll be gaining weight during this pregnancy."

Nick, 30, also revealed he is in awe of his wife and admitted she is handling expectant parenthood much better than he is.

"She's holding up beautifully," he said. "To see this strength! It's a different type of strength to carry around two babies. She's not even concerned with her aches and pains which I'm sure are great. She's so nurturing right now. It's wonderful. It's amazing to see. I'm extremely excited about bringing new life into the world. It's a journey every single day. It's something new. I'm nervous. I'm excited. We're just taking it one day at a time."

Mariah Carey's Good Taste

Ankle Wrap Platform Sandal, $99.90
Even as motherhood rapidly approaches, Mariah Carey refuses to slow down.

After debuting a footwear collection with HSN in November, the songstress is gearing up to return to the cable spotlight on Feb. 11 to showcase her spring line. The new collection features six styles, including an ankle-wrap platform sandal, a T-strap pump and other warm-weather offerings. And similar to the first line, the spring shoes are adorned with rhinestones, jewels and butterflies, all part of Carey's signature look.

Finding inspiration for the shoes came easily, Carey told Footwear News. "My life exists in public and in shoes," she said. "I'll build my outfit around the [footwear]."

And now, as her footwear selection has started to favor flats over stilettos by necessity, the mother-to-be said the shift could spark her next design project. "It's making me really want a maternity line," she said.

First concert: Michael Jackson. "I was addicted to listening to the radio, and Michael was always on. He [had] an amazing voice."

Best vacation spot: Capri, Italy. "I go shopping a lot. There are really nice stores and gorgeous blue water."

Funniest "Saturday Night Live" skit: "They did this skit about divas, and it was pretty funny. One of the girls [played] me, and there were [impersonations of] Celine Dion and Shania Twain."

Go-to fashion accessories: "My wedding ring and a butterfly ring."

Favorite duet partners: "I've made records with just about everybody. I just did a duet on my Christmas album with my mother, and a memorable event was working with Luciano Pavarotti. And for fun, I [loved] 'Fantasy' with Ol' Dirty Bastard."

Most enjoyable venue: "Performing at Madison Square Garden. I love New York. It's my hometown."

How I relax: "I love swimming, I love the beach and I love the water. I have to put on so much sunblock."

Movie I can watch over and over: "For a while it was 'Mean Girls.' I would quote it. Lately I watch 'Bruno.' It's hilarious."

Red carpet footwear picks: "Manolo [Blahnik] always does a fabulous red-carpet shoe, and I love YSL."

Billboard Mention

Ask Billboard's Gary Trust answers some fan questions re: Hot 100 songs with inappropriate titles/content, and Mariah gets a mention.

Ask Billboard: You Can't Say That On Radio
When I worked in radio, we often received safe edits for songs from labels. Even adult contemporary acts like Sarah McLachlan sometimes required the exclusive airing of a clean version of a single. A memorable line from her 1997 No. 13 Hot 100 hit "Building a Mystery" became "you're a beautiful, beautiful (silence)-ed up man" when heard on pop radio.

It's not even just inappropriate words that can be barred from airplay. Questionable content also prompts creative makeovers.

Mariah Carey's most recent Hot 100 top 10, "Obsessed" (No. 7, 2009), contains the line, "it must be the weed, it must be the E." The song climbed to No. 8 on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart, but when you heard it on your local top 40 station, you likely heard garbled sound effects in place of the two suggested mood enhancers.

Mariah and Nick Are Having a Boy and a Girl
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 01-Feb-2011, 4:05PM EST
Life & Style can exclusively confirm that Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon are expecting a boy--and a girl! "It's all about pink and blue these days," a friend of the couple tells Life & Style. "It's truly going to be a dream come true for them. They get a son and daughter."

And Mariah couldn't be happier. "Even before we announced it was twins, I was trying to keep everything genderneutral because I didn't want to impose an identity on them too soon," Mariah tells Life & Style with a laugh. "There were fan contests on Twitter about what gender they are and rumors about them being two boys or two girls -- but nobody guessed this!"

Nick first revealed in December that the couple were having twins. "In order for my wife and I to have our life, we need to be up front and I need to be able to share things with you and be real," he said on his radio show. "I didn't even tell my wife I was gonna do this. I'm probably gonna get yelled at for not getting permission. We're having twins!" They're set to welcome their bundles of joy in April. "It's been a long journey--but a happy one," says mom-to-be Mariah.
