Mariah's New Single Takes Off
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 28-Feb-2013, 11:36PM EST
HERE COMES THE JUDGE: Even though the show has been on the air for 12 seasons, itís still a rare event for an American Idol judge to have a single on the Billboard charts as an artist during their tenure on the series. Paula Abdul did it twice, first in 2008 with "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" and again in 2009 with "I'm Just Here for the Music."Jennifer Lopez had four singles chart in 2011-12, starting with "On the Floor." Her fellow judge Steven Tyler charted in 2011 with his solo single "(It) Feels So Good."

This week, this elite list adds another name. Mariah Carey charts for the first time since she became a judge on Idol. Her soundtrack single from the forthcoming Oz the Great and Powerful makes four debuts.

"Almost Home" is a new entry at No. 18 on R&B Songs and bows at No. 9 on the R&B Digital Songs chart. This is Careyís first appearance on both charts -- no surprise, since both are fairly new in the pantheon of charts compiled every week by Billboard. "Almost Home" is also new at No. 1 on Bubbling Under Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 29 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs.

Carey has one of the most impressive chart histories of the last quarter-century (she made her debut in 1990), just as Abdul, Tyler and Lopez had a long list of hits prior to appearing on Idol, but being on the show cannot be a hindrance to continued chart success. Look for "Almost Home" to debut on more Billboard charts next week.

American Idol Judges On Saying "No" To Contestants
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 27-Feb-2013, 7:20PM EST
Between rehearsals, elimination shows, photo shoots, make-up and hair sessions and media interviews, American Idol judges Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Mariah Carey all have schedules that keep them going every waking hour, as does host Ryan Seacrest. But all of them took time to have a backstage conversation Tuesday night with The Hollywood Reporter at the Love Theatre inside the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, home to the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show Love and currently a temporary home to six Idol broadcasts over a three-week period, concluding next week.

Most of the conversations centered around the judges and hosts' experience of the Fox-TV series' 12th season. Here's how the backstage talks went:

THR: Every artist has had to hear the word "no" at some point in their career. I'm sure you all have. So how does it feel to have to say "no" to some of these contestants?

Urban: Everybody takes the experience differently. It depends on so many factors - what kind of families we were in, the kind of friends we hang around with, the age weíre at, the amount of years we've been doing it, the amount of confidence we have in ourselves. Sometimes people tell us "no" and we have to make the decision ourselves whether we think they're completely wrong and I'm going to ignore them, or, they're actually right and I need to take that advice.

I heard plenty of nos. I've gotten a lot of fuel from the nos. The nos have given me more fire in my life then the yeses have. I try to remember that when we have to give nos to people.

Minaj: I definitely do not like saying no. If it were up to me, I'd give my critique but not decide who'd going home. So I'm happy about the live shows in L.A. I don't want to crush anyone's dream. At times when I've heard "no" it made me better, so I donít want to lie to the contestants.

THR: You must have had a picture in your head about what being a judge on Idol would be like. How does that image compare with the real thing?

Carey: I didn't realize how many truly talented people there would be, both the guys and the girls, and I really have gotten attached to certain people. To have to let them go is sometimes very hard for me.

I have my producer hat on sometimes and [think] this girl could immediately go and get a deal and have a chart-topping record. And then sometimes this person needs some work but theyíre an incredible singer that I would look up to and I want to go to their show.

Minaj: I pictured it being a little scarier then it is. I didn't expect it to be this much fun. I didn't expect to be able to speak off the top of my head about people I never met before a day in my life and be spontaneous commenting on their performances. It's definitely surprised me - for the better.

THR: Keith, did your experience on The Voice in Australia help prepare you to be a judge on Idol?

Urban: We don't get to mentor the contestants as such on this show so I try to incorporate that in my critiquing of their performances because all of us want to help them. We're not there to make them feel bad or embarrass them but try to give them some specific ways they can get to where they're trying to get to. A lot of the time, as artists, we've got these bad habits or there are just little things that we're doing that we need to get rid of and we donít have the people around us who either know or are not willing to tell us or don't know how to tell us.

THR: Randy, you and Ryan are the constants on this show. Do you feel that way? And can you believe that this is already season 12?

Jackson: Yeah, I feel that a bit. I am shocked that this is season 12 of American Idol. Shocked! I'm happy about it. We're so blessed. It's still the best show of its kind.

THR: Is the new lineup of judges working out?

Jackson: I think this is a great panel, we've gelled together well. What's always the most important thing is learning to agree to disagree because I find panels very boring when we all agree and say the same things. Sometimes we do see things the same way. And it's OK to get booed. Youíve got to call it the way you see it. If you dish it out, youíre going to get it back.

Mariah is amazing, one of the best vocalists of our time. No one will ever sell 200 million records again. I don't care who you name, they ainít doing it. You could put five or six of them together, the biggest artists today, they still wonít sell two hundred million copies together. She achieved a feat that is amazing, being that songwriter and amazing talent. Then you have Nicki. Nicki's a very different, outspoken, smart girl as well, an artist in her own right. Keith is very knowledgeable. I don't think there's anything about the music business this panel doesn't know everything about.

Seacrest: This is the ultimate ensemble. We're working with artists who are so successful individually and they are used to doing their own thing. We never know exactly how it's going to come together. But every week it seems like weíre having more and more fun.

THR: A few months ago a Fox executive said American Idol could run 15 or 17 years.

Seacrest: It wouldn't surprise me. You look at that kind of an audience in this day and age, I donít know that thereís any reason to stop.

THR: But you couldn't have imagined back in season one that we'd be sitting here backstage talking about season 12.

Seacrest: Never. Back then I was just excited we got a season two.

Mariah & The 30 Best So So Def Songs
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 23-Feb-2013, 11:37PM EST
In anticipation of tonight's So So Def 20th anniversary concert, Complex Music compiled a list of So So Def's 30 best songs. Mariah graces the list twice. Check out which songs made it below:

22. Jermaine Dupri "Sweetheart" (1998)

Album: Life in 1472
Producer: Jermaine Dupri, Mariah Carey

"Sweetheart" never quite performed like one would have expected a Mariah Carey feature to perform in 1998, reaching only No 125 on the Billboard singles charts; it was initially planned as a single, but the record company pulled it at the last minute (although many singles still entered circulation). It qualified for Billboard due to rule changes that took effect that fall, allowing album tracks to chart through airplay.

Drawn from Jermaine Dupri's solo debut Life in 1472, the song featured such an incredible Mariah performance that she managed to make Dupri seem like a guest on his own song. Today, the song's low-key groove and impeccable vocals make the label's decision surrounding the single even more mysterious.

7. Mariah Carey "My All/Stay Awhile (So So Def Remix)" (1998)

Album: N/A
Producer: Jermaine Dupri

"My All" was one in a long chain of massive '90s Mariah singles, topping Billboard (Mariah's 13th single to do so) and ultimately reaching platinum sales. The So So Def Remix was a masterful move on Jermaine Dupri's part. Mariah re-recorded her vocals for the remix, and it was retitled "My All/Stay Awhile," due to Mariah's added interpolation of Loose Ends' 1986 R&B hit "Stay A Little While."

The song also featured guest verses from Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq, fresh off the success of the duo's classic "Uptown Baby." The video, shot with the a grainy quality that might qualify as the late-90s equivalent of the retro-Instagram aesthetic, captured the place and time with striking cinematic vision.

People: Idol Judges on Sudden Death Rounds
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 21-Feb-2013, 4:55PM EST
Goodbyes are often a necessarily evil on American Idol. But on Wednesday - which kicked off the show's first-ever sudden-death round - they were downright nasty.

"I hated it. I really did," Mariah Carey told PEOPLE of cutting five of 10 female contestants in Las Vegas. "Everybody was talented and different. There were some special people we had to get rid of."

Nicki Minaj happened to agree: "I don't want to hurt people's feelings," she said, "but I guess that's what we're required to do."

Keith Urban even had to tell a contestant who had his support that her time on the show was over.

"I couldn't get enough votes," he said. "It was just simple as that. We all take turns saying 'yay' or 'nay' to the girls, and I actually had to say it to the girl I had voted for. That's particularly hard."

The lobby for artists "gets impassioned," he added. "You have need re-discuss and re-discuss what is it we're really looking for and what are we basing this decision on. Even that is never easy. There is no clear cut decision on that."

Wednesday episode was the first of three weeks for Idol to broadcast from the Beatles Love Theatre in Vegas. On Thursday, 10 men will perform and five will go home. The entire process will repeat with the remaining 10 women and 10 men on next week's shows.

"This is a different thing than we've ever done," veteran judge Randy Jackson said. "This is 10 sing and five gotta go. This is sudden death."

VH1 Asks: Do You Love Mariah's "Almost Home"?
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 21-Feb-2013, 4:40PM EST
Confession: We liked Mariah Carey's "Triumphant" from her forthcoming project despite the disappointment loads of music critics felt. "Almost Home" from Oz The Great and Powerful soundtrack was gifted to the digital world a day early which promotes the upcoming film and Mariah's album. While "Almost Home" shows off Mariah's one of a kind powerhouse vocals the song itself is missing what tends to make a Mariah song stick.

Her signature riffs and runs carry the mostly forgettable track. Until the Stargate produced bass shifts (at 2:13) it sounds like something any pop artist could make. Finally she reaches the high octave, showing once again why sheís been Queen for nearly two decades. Despite the inspirational aspect it doesn't hit you like the "Always Be My Baby" or "Honey" singles that topped charts and remain timeless today.

Jackson explained, "What it means is that 10 people sing and five people have to go that night." Carey added, "What they're up against is incredibly difficult, and I don't envy them because I like had to learn how to perform on TV, you know, on 'Arsenio Hall.'"

Mariah: Nick's The Reason I Became A Mom
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 20-Feb-2013, 6:15PM EST
Mariah Carey may be a new judge on the hit show American Idol, but the star's biggest gig is the one she has off-camera - Mommy!

In an exclusive interview with In Touch, on newsstands now, Mariah opens up about her life as Nick Cannon's wife and what it's like to have 21-month-old twins, admitting that having kids wasn't always in the cards for her.

"I never thought I'd experience motherhood," she admits. "My career was my life." But all that changed when she met Nick. "When you find the right person, you [want to] go through it," she tells In Touch.

And now, the couple have finally settled into their roles as parents and are learning to embrace the unique personalities of their little ones.

"He's my little buddy," Mariah admits of her son, Moroccan. "We watch movies together. He can be a little more aggressive, but not in a bad way - he'll give his sister a little tap when she's trying to give him a hug. Monroe is just a sweetie."

Regardless of their different personas, Mariah feels more adoration now than she ever has.

"I'm so in love," the superstar admits of her new family. "Every moment is incredible."

Tidbits: American Idol Taping
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 20-Feb-2013, 5:39PM EST
Gil was in attendance at last night's American Idol taping at the Beatles LOVE Theatre in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show airs tonight at 8:00pm ET/PT. Here are some tidbits from the taping.

• The show started a little behind schedule. The audience was told the taping would last from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, but ended up starting at 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm. The LOVE theater is in the round, we were seated behind the band, facing the judges. (No cameras or cell phones were allowed, otherwise I would provide photos.)

• Ryan Seacrest was introduced first, followed by the ten contestants, then the judges. The judges were introduced one by one; Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj and finally our Mariah. She was wearing what appeared to be a leather skirt and bright pink (maybe neon orange) sky-high heels. Of course, she received the liveliest welcome from the audience.

• The show featured ten female contestants, five were eliminated in a sudden death round.

• Throughout the show, she seemed to strive to be the most nurturing of the judges' panel and offered the most constructive criticism that she could.

• In between breaks, the audience repeatedly yelled "I love you, Mariah!," "Lambs for life," "Almost Home!" etc. To which she smiled, waved, blew kisses and replied "I love you too!" Kris Buckle was also there in between takes, touching up her make-up.

• She was spotted speaking with contestant Tenna Torres (Camp Mariah alum) in between breaks, although it was unclear what they were discussing.

• Once the eliminations were over, the taping ended and the audience filtered out of the theater. The judges and remaining contestants remained onstage (underage contestants were asked to leave due to long work hours). Mariah stayed for a while longer and left, while shaking a few fans' hands on her way out. All in all, a super-loooooooooong taping, but worth it to see Mariah.

Below, see Gil's ticket and a backshot of the judges.

Press Reviews: "Almost Home"
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 19-Feb-2013, 7:16PM EST
Less than 24 hours after its release, the press is already abuzz with positive reviews for Mariah's new single, "Almost Home." Check out some highlights below!

• E!: "If you've ever closed your eyes, clicked your heels and wished for more Mariah Carey, then you're in luck, because your musical prayers have been answered... The up-tempo track features Carey's signature powerhouse vocals and an electro-pop beat. The American Idol judge belts out inspirational lyrics on the movie's musical anthem, perfectly paying homage to Dorothy and the classic tale."

• Vibe: "Falsetto connoisseur Mariah Carey headlines the soundtrack for Disney's newest film Oz: The Great and The Powerful with the lighthearted track 'Almost Home. Co-written by Simone Porter, Justin Gray, Lindsey Ray and co-produced by Stargate, the 'Triumphant' songbird harmonizes the way she does best."

• MTV: "Put on your best pair of ruby slippers, close your eyes and click your heels together because Mariah Carey is taking fans along for her trip to Oz. On Tuesday (February 19), she officially released 'Almost Home,' the lead tune off the Oz the Great and Powerful soundtrack. The up-tempo pop piece plants Carey right in the mythical land from the famed movie. It's weaved together by a bouncing beat and bright synths, as Carey's signature vocals soar over Stargate's sparkling production work."

• Los Angeles Times: "Carey's new song, "Almost Home" -- it's tied to Disney's "Oz the Great and Powerful," scheduled for movie theaters next month -- feels like a return to that earlier time... the midtempo song seems entirely built around Carey's vocals, which arc upward until they crest in a key change that delivers the thrill we've grown to expect from her. It's an old-fashioned appeal to think of Carey anew."

• Yahoo! Canada Music Blog: "Mariah's 2009 Eminem dis 'Obsessed' was her last top 10 hit. But her new song 'Almost Home' from the soundtrack of Oz The Great And Powerful will place her back on the top of the charts. Mariah understands how to keep her sound fresh and relevant better than possibly any other pop star with 20-plus years of hits. Though ''Almost Home' boasts Mariah's honey-laced multi-octave range, the song's true pop friendliness lies on the production from Stargate. The music shifts several times during its course, moving from a militaristic, uplifting mid-tempo to a gritty, knocking underground hip-hop track before settling on an easy EDM bed that Katy Perry would have loved. 'Almost Home'' essentially incorporates bits of Perry, Kelly Clarkson and the Black Eyed Peas without losing Mariah in the mix."

• AOL Music Blog: "A movie as epic as Oz The Great and Powerful deserves an equally as memorable soundtrack. (Seriously, James Franco is playing the famous wizard!) Luckily, Mariah Carey delivers. 'Almost Home,' a song from the upcoming film, kicks off with a thumping beat as powerful as Mimi's vocals. The Stargate-produced track is the quintessential movie anthem, underscoring the timeless Wizard of Oz quest to go home."

• Popcrush: "The song is a return to form for the multi-octave diva. 'Almost Home' sounds like a Carey track from the days of yore - her 90's heyday - in the best way. With a Stargate-produced beat, the song sounds like it'd fit right in on Carey's pop classics Music Box and Daydream. The upbeat song relies on Carey's unrivaled gifts of melody, harmony and power instead of attempting to attain street cred with guest rappers, and it's where she shines brightest. The track starts out with a more R&B vibe in the verses, then morphs into a poppier tune for the choruses. The song has a motivational message akin to Carey's unstoppable ballad 'Hero,' but combines it with an upbeat, uptempo track."

• Neon Limelight: "Mariah Carey is back and serving up major vocals on her new single, 'Almost Home.' The Grammy-winning diva and American Idol judge belts to the high heavens on the mid-tempo pop track, the first single from the soundtrack to Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful."

• Hollywood Gossip: "Remember when Mariah Carey was just a singer? One of the all-time greats, at that? Well, she reminds us of this with her latest release, entitled 'Almost Home.' The song, which is tied to the new film Oz the Great and Powerful, feels like a return to the Mariah of old, with electro-pop precision backing up her soaring vocals. The mid-tempo track may not go down as one of her biggest hits, but it's indicative of the unique vocal talent she possesses, and what her fans now expect."

"Almost Home" Lyrics
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 18-Feb-2013, 4:49PM EST
Hey hey
You're almost home, you're almost home, you're almost home

I see the light in the sky
In disguise, like fireflies
Burning bright, just to vanish in the dark
I've held hope in my two hands
That there would be another chance
To find a kingdom I believe in in my heart
Cause underneath the good is something greater than you know

Chorus
When you're almost there and you're almost home
Just open up your eyes and go, go
When you're almost there, almost home
Know you're not alone, you're almost home, home
(You're almost home)

When you run, run so far
You've forgotten who you are
Where you're from is like some other universe
You count your steps like the regrets
You catch one breath and lose the rest
Wrong is right, right is left
And there's nowhere left to turn
So don't believe in everything
You think you think you know

Chorus
When you're almost there and you're almost home
Just open up your eyes and go, go
When you're almost there, almost home
Know you're not alone, you're almost home, home

When you let your heart be the compass
(It will always lead you home)
You won't get lost, not if you trust it
(It will always lead you home)
When you hear the sound of the trumpet louder than ever before

Chorus
When you're almost there, almost home
Just open up your eyes and go, go
Cause you're almost there, almost home
Know you're not alone, you're almost home, home, home, home

When you're almost there, almost home
Just open up your eyes and go, go
Almost there, you're almost home
Know you're not alone, you're almost home, home, home, home

Mariah Celebrates Mom's Birthday in NY
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 18-Feb-2013, 6:16AM EST

It's only fitting that Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia Hickey Carey, celebrated the weekend in song.

The 42-year-old five-time Grammy winner and her mom, a former opera singer, celebrated Patricia's 76th birthday this weekend by taking in a Friday night performance of "Phantom of the Opera" at Broadway's Majestic Theatre. Afterward, a waiting Rolls-Royce took them to Lincoln Center, where they walked around the courtyard fountain while a performance of "Rigoletto" was letting out at the Metropolitan Opera.

"Both looked gorgeous," a source on the scene told Confideni@l. "Mariah Carey was in a black dress with hair pulled into a cascading fall. Mom was in a pantsuit."

When the ladies arrived at the Majestic, the "crowd went nuts!"

An insider said it was a sentimental journey for Patricia, a big "Phantom" fan who's seen the long-running musical several times. Early in her singing career, she performed Verdi's "Rigoletto."

After a stroll around the performance center's grounds, the two songbirds said they were going to get dessert before calling it a night.

New Album Song Title: "You're Mine"
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 16-Feb-2013, 4:19PM EST
MariahDailyJournal has learned the title of a new track from Mariah's upcoming album: "You're Mine."

The song is described as an early favorite from her team just as "Stay The Night" was to the The Emancipation of Mimi and "Cruise Control" was to e=mc². It is unknown at this time if "You're Mine" will be a single.

Note: This post has been edited to reflect the correction that "You're Mine" is compared to "Stay the Night" & "Cruise Control" in that it's an early favorite of her team - just as those songs were - not that "You're Mine" sounds like those songs.

Hollywood Reporter: "Almost Home" Snippet
Posted by Jonny on Saturday, 16-Feb-2013, 4:12PM EST
"Almost Home," from the forthcoming movie "Oz: The Great and Powerful," goes to radio on Feb. 19. An accompanying video, directed by frequent collaborator David LaChapelle, is slated to premiere in the coming weeks.

Just in time for the long weekend, superstar singer, American Idol judge and diva extraordinaire Mariah Carey is letting fans whet their appetite for new music by releasing a snippet of her about-to-be-released single, "Almost Home."

Featured in the forthcoming Disney feature Oz: The Great and Powerful, starring James Franco and Mila Kunis, directed by Sam Raimi and scheduled for a theatrical release on March 7, the pure pop track was co-written by Carey with Simone Porter, Justin Gray, Lindsey Ray and co-produced by Stargate (Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen). It goes to radio on Tuesday, Feb. 19. An accompanying video, directed by Carey's frequent collaborator David LaChapelle, will premiere in the coming weeks.

The vocals for "Almost Home" sit comfortably in Carey's mid-range, as opposed to leaning more heavily on the breathy falsetto for which the octave-defying performer is also known. Recorded in New York City at Roc The Mic Studios and featuring overlaying harmonies, the song marks a return to form for the multiple Grammy winner, who's sold more than 200 million albums since her 1990 debut. "It's a feel-good record," said Carey in a statement announcing the tune whose lyrics pine to "find a kingdom I believe in in my heart." "It gives you the feeling of reaching your home and being with people that you love," she added.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is a sort of prequel to the timeless story of The Wizard of Oz that imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's iconic title character.

Carey is currently working on a new album slated for release in the spring.

Listen to a snippet of "Almost Home" here.

Mariah's Valentines Day: Bubbles, Balloons, Bath
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 15-Feb-2013, 1:28PM EST
The diva and her hubby had a romantic night, from start to finish.

Superstar singer Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon went all out for what appeared to be a very romantic Valentine's Day.

The American Idol judge shared it with her followers and fans all night long.

"Happy Valentine's Day lovers!!!! Our valentine's day began last night..." she tweeted, sharing a shot of her kissing hubby Nick Cannon with the New York skyline behind them.

On Thursday evening, she shared photos of their date night, from start to finish.

"Getting ready for my Valentines Rendezvous consumed by bubbles.. " she tweeted, with a photo of her soaking in a tub, surrounded by candles, bubbles and flowers.

Then she had an unexpected guest. The next shot showed Mariah and her dog, accompanied by the caption: "aaah! Jill E Beans leaps to the tub In hopes of a splash champagne - whhhhhy?"

A short time later, we saw her dressed in a red gown and gazing adoringly at Cannon - sweetly prom-esque! - with more than a dozen red, white and butterfly balloons behind them.

"Ready!!!!" she said.

They capped the night off with a Manhattan carriage ride. "A kiss delicately scented with horse dung.... Still romantic though.."

Mariah Carey to Croon in Hindi
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 15-Feb-2013, 7:11AM EST
Mumbai, Feb. 15 -- After R&B star Akon serenaded Kareena Kapoor by singing 'Chammak challo' in his distinctive American accent in RA.One (2011), now another American star Mariah Carey is all set to follow in his footsteps. A trade source reveals that Mariah has been roped in to sing parts of a Hindi song specially composed for the Hindi version of the upcoming fantasy-adventure film, Oz The Great And Powerful, which is directed by Sam Raimi. "Mariah is going to sing a verse of the Hindi song which is being composed for the dubbed version of the film," says the source.

Fans of the singer will be disappointed though as unlike Akon, Mariah is not going to fly down to India, to record or further promote the film. "The makers are hurrying to record the song in Los Angeles around March 12," says the source.

The makers are still mulling over the right lyrics for Mariah's part of the song. "They are shortlisting some of the Indian lyricists to write the paragraph for the song, which will be in synch with the mood of the film," adds the source. As Mariah has only a verse in the song, another Indian-American rapper, whose identity hasn't been disclosed yet, is being signed for the remaining bits.

Walt Disney Pictures, who are distributing the film around the world, are set to release it India a month after the US release on March 8. Produced by Joe Roth, Oz The Great And Powerful is a live animation film that takes place before the events depicted in the 1939 classic The Wizard Of Oz.

Jermaine Dupri Talks New Mariah Album
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 15-Feb-2013, 5:50AM EST
Jermaine Dupri was recently interviewed by entertainment blog "That Grape Juice" and he briefly talked about his work on Mariah's new album. Check out what he had to say:

TGJ: You already know! Now, switching gears a bit, we hear that you're hard at work at Mariah Carey's new album. How is that album shaping up?

JD: Well, it's funny - I never said that either. I said I've worked on some records. Some people seem to forget that I'm the one who produced "Triumphant" with Rick Ross and Meek Millz. I just let people know I've done that and a bunch of other songs for that album.

Now, when she starts putting the album together, I'm sure to have 4 to 5 songs on it. I don't know what those will be at this point though, because I'm not involved in that decision process. So, I'm waiting to find out just like you guys are.

TGJ: Any hints on what we can expect sonically?

JD: I don't think any of the other songs are like "Triumphant." We have a couple of dance records - and no I don't mean EDM, I mean more for the clubs. I don't know if they have a "type." I usually do what I think people want. I can't really tell you what genre it would fit in.

Ranking the Best New Artist Grammy Winners
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 11-Feb-2013, 5:54PM EST
In anticipation of last night's Grammy Awards, entertainment website Zimbio reflected on the Best New Artist winners from the past 30 years: "Contrary to popular mythology, there is no Best New Artist Grammy curse that dooms past winners to one-hit wonder obscurity. Sure, a couple of winners (and a huge chunk of the nominees) have fallen off the map completely, but many of the artists who've nabbed the trophy have gone on to become living legends. Here's our very opinionated take on the Best New Artists of the past 30 years, ranked from best to worst."

Mariah ranks #1 on the list! Here's what they had to say about her:

Grimes Defends Her Love of Mariah Carey
Posted by Angie on Sunday, 10-Feb-2013, 3:14PM EST
When indie darling Grimes posted her favorite songs of 2012 list on her Tumblr, she included some surprising picks, including artists like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lana Del Rey and Psy. And then she caught a whole lot of flack for it. (Because she's supposed to be underground and cool.)

Grimes came to pop music's defense in a new blog post where she singled out Beyonce, Psy and Mariah Carey, and explained her respect and adoration for each of the artists. She's since deleted the post (and all but two posts on her Tumblr), but Pitchfork grabbed it before she took it down.

Mariah Carey received the biggest compliment from the "Genesis" singer, though, when she explains that Mariah is the very reason that Grimes even exists. "I know very few adult males who consider themselves serious 'music guys' who don't laugh when I say I like Mariah Carey. Why? Because she's beautiful and people like her... The first time I heard Mariah Carey it shattered the fabric of my existence and I started Grimes." Whoa. That's some high praise.

Hudson Says Mariah is Best Idol Judge
Posted by Angie on Saturday, 09-Feb-2013, 3:40PM EST
There's only one American Idol judge that's doing the show justice – according to Jennifer Hudson.

The Oscar winner stopped by Live with Kelly & Michael Friday and revealed it's Mariah Carey.

"Well, I'm happy she's there because she's a singer, so she knows what to expect, how to judge, even the position that the kids are in when they're auditioning," the 31-year-old mom of one says.

Mariah Records "Almost Home" For Disney
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 06-Feb-2013, 11:41AM EST
Global Superstar Mariah Carey Records "Almost Home" For Disney's Oz The Great and Powerful

Disney announced today that multiple GRAMMY Award-winning superstar Mariah Carey has recorded the song, "Almost Home," for Oz The Great and Powerful, the studio's highly anticipated fantastical adventure, directed by Sam Raimi, releasing in theaters nationwide on March 8, 2013.

"Almost Home" will be released as a single by Carey's label, Island Def Jam, on February 19, 2013. Award-winning photographer/director David LaChapelle will direct Carey in the music video for "Almost Home." The two long-time collaborators are reuniting in what LaChapelle describes as "a duet between Mariah and the movie." LaChapelle photographed Carey previously for album covers, and directed her in the music video "Loverboy." Disney, Carey and Island
Def Jam plan to launch a promotional campaign to support the single, the video and the film.

"'Almost Home' has a message that works beautifully with the film," Mariah Carey says of the song she co-wrote and co-produced for Oz The Great and Powerful. "It's a feel-good record, evoking the feeling of reaching your home and being with people that you love."

Mariah Carey is the best-selling female artist of all time with more than 200 million albums sold to date and eighteen Billboard #1 singles (seventeen self-penned). With her distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting, and producing talent, Carey has defined the modern pop performance. As a singer/songwriter/producer, she has been recognized with five GRAMMY Awards, nine American Music Awards, Billboard's Artist of the Decade Award, the World Music Award for World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium and BMI's Icon Award for her outstanding achievements in songwriting, to name a few. Carey is currently working on her new studio album to be released this spring.

"Almost Home" is performed by Mariah Carey, produced by Mariah Carey and Stargate for 45th & 3rd Music LLC, written by Simone Porter, Justin Gray, Lindsey Ray, Tor Erik Hermansen, Mikkel Eriksen and Mariah Carey. Courtesy of Island Def Jam Music Group/Universal Music Group.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

Disney's fantastical adventure Oz The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.

Oz The Great and Powerful is produced by Joe Roth, with screen story by Mitchell Kapner and screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire. Grant Curtis, Palak Patel, Josh Donen and Philip Steuer are serving as executive producers. Oz The Great and Powerful opens in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013.

Jermaine Dupri Talks Mariah Carey Album
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 06-Feb-2013, 3:07AM EST
American Idol has been a huge success for Mariah Carey. Not only has she been a great addition to the show because of her singing knowledge, she's also provided great entertainment for fans who may not have been aware of her witty side. Mariah's role on the show has proven that she is not forgotten and there's no doubt that there is still a ton of interest for new Mariah Carey music.

In an interview with Mariah's longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri, YouKnowIGotSoul exclusively learned some details regarding the potential sound of the project.

"We have a crazy relationship. We have a very interesting working relationship. As Hip Hop as I am, she wants to be double Hip Hop. When we go in the studio, it's like I turn into the R&B person and she turns into the rapper. It's a real weird situation. She wants to do everything that all the rappers are doing like everything thatís happening in the club. I'm more like "Yo, can we make this singing song like a beautiful ballad please?" I'm tuned into what I believe the fans want when I work with Mariah. I believe Mariah has been making music for so long that, like I said, as an artist she wants to change her sound and do this and do things differently than what sheís done. As an artist that's had a long career like hers, you have to respect that. At the same time though, I'm the person that is always there to be like "Listen, the fans want this." We go round and round, but it's a really creative process because we find a happy medium."

Furthermore Jermaine Dupri, who is set to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of his So So Def imprint, gave some details on a song that he believes is a hit waiting to happen.

"I don't know what is coming and what ain't from what we've done, but I do know I did do a song with Mariah almost a year ago that y'all havenít heard yet. I know if it gets on the radio, it's going to blow up and go crazy. I can tell you that. I donít know what sheís going to do with the song, but I tell her every day that the song is crazy."

American Idol Hollywood Rounds

DREAMS! DRAMA! DESPERATION!
IT'S HOLLYWOOD WEEK! ON "AMERICAN IDOL"

HEART-POUNDING "AMERICAN IDOL" HOLLYWOOD ROUNDS FILLED
WITH TRIUMPHS AND TEARS BEGIN FOR CONTESTANTS
NEXT WEDNESDAY ON FOX

Hollywood Rounds Begin with the Guys' Performances Wednesday, February 6;
Girls Battle It Out Starting Wednesday, February 13;
Top 40 Semifinalists Announced Thursday, February 14

Whether auditioners received a unanimous "yes" from Mariah, Randy, Nicki and Keith or had the judges battling over their fates, it's a clean slate in Hollywood for the lucky contestants who are one step closer to becoming the next AMERICAN IDOL. For the first time in the "Hollywood Rounds," it's guys vs. guys and girls vs. girls, as they compete for a spot in the coveted Top 40 Semifinalists.

The "Hollywood Rounds" will be the toughest audition yet, but for some contestants, it will be a life-changing opportunity; for others, the end of the road. First, they will face the judges and sing a cappella, trusting only in their talent to make it another day. Those that survive will then join forces with one another – trusting in friends and, possibly, foes – for the heart-pounding, sleep-deprived group day. Those who stand out will move on to the solo day, giving the remaining contestants one more chance to impress the judges and make the Top 40.

Drama and desperation escalate behind the scenes as the pressure mounts during the intense "Hollywood Rounds" which kick-off with the guys, competing on Wednesday, Feb. 6 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Feb. 7 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). The girls get their chance to win over the judges beginning Wednesday, Feb. 13 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). At the end of the girls' second and final "Hollywood Round," on Thursday, Feb. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), only the Top 40 semifinalists – 20 guys and 20 girls – will remain.
