American Idol Jordin's Dad: "We Called Her Mariah"
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 31-May-2007, 5:33PM EDT
Sports Illustrated (SI) writer Richard Deitsch interviewed Phillippi Sparks for the magazine's Q&A. The former NFL star is the father of American Idol winner Jordin Sparks. Here is an excerpt from the interview where he mentions Mariah:

SI: When did you know Jordin could sing?

Sparks: The age of three. She was singing and talking in full sentences. She had a raspy voice like Mariah Carey so we called her Mariah.

Scroll down to May 29 News Tidbits to watch a video of little Jordin singing along to Mariah's "Dreamlover" and "Hero."

Mariah To Work With Akon?
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 31-May-2007, 9:21AM EDT
Akon's voice is one of the most unmistakable - and unavoidable - in music today.

From collaborations with Gwen Stefani, Eminem and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony to his own solo hits to rumored upcoming collabs with Elton John, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and even the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the smooth-voiced, Senegal-born singer is a ubiquitous force on the pop charts; to wit, he's currently got four songs in Billboard's Top 40.

ActiveX Module for CD Bonus Content Unsafe
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 31-May-2007, 7:54AM EDT
Eminem, Cold Play, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey - there's one thing they all have in common - an application on their CDs which promises additional downloads and content. The program, going by the name of CDPass, analyses the inserted CD and then activates web content if the user can prove that he owns the media.

US-CERT reports, however, that the ActiveX module provided by the file "CDPass.dll" is vulnerable to numerous buffer overflows. As a result, attackers can inject malicious code via crafted web pages or HTML e-mail and execute it with the user's privileges. US-CERT does not provide any further information in its security advisory.

No update from the vendor, Media Technology Group, is yet in sight. Affected users should therefore either deactivate ActiveX or set the kill bit for this ActiveX control, which has the CLSID {46C66BBD-E667-4dad-9682-58050E7C9FDC}. A Microsoft knowledge base article offers assistance with doing so.

Note: The said Mariah CD is The Emancipation of Mimi limited-edition two-disc set with DVD that contains a web link to access the video "Don't Forget About Us" and interview 'Mariah In Her Own Words.'

Mariah Shops from St. Maarten
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 29-May-2007, 11:59AM EDT
R&B superstar Usher spent $800 in a shopping spree at designer store Blue and Cream in East Hampton on Saturday.

Rolling up with music producer L.A. Reid in his new Bentley, Usher bought a white and blue cream thermal hoody with a gold skull emblem, gold limited-edition Nikes and two pairs of high tops for his son.

B+C owner Jeff Goldstein quickly called Mariah Carey in St. Maarten and advised her to buy a pair of the same $500 UES shoes that Usher's son got so that she could give them to Reid's son, Aaron, as a high-school graduation present. She did.

Mariah On The Cover of VIBE 1998
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 28-May-2007, 5:43PM EDT
Our magazines section, On The Cover has been updated to now include the November 1998 issue of VIBE. Thanks to Amanda for the scans!

Higher and Higher
Mariah's mama told her she was going to hurt herself is she kept belting out those high notes. But the girl wouldn't listen. Now she can't rest until she takes it to the next level - wherever that is

Dewy and still damp from the shower, Mariah Carey has put on a little powder and a little mascara. Her big mane is wet and close to her scalp. She's in blue boxers and a tank and is listening to old Stevie Wonder. It's midnight, and we're 40 miles north of San Francisco. While we split a bottle of merlot and munch on Monterey Jack cheese, Mariah seems very much like the kind of 28 year old who could sell more than 5 million albums when she was just out of high school. Since that 1990 introduction, she's gone on to sell more than 80 million albums. Married a mogul almost twice her age. Got divorced before she was old enough to be too mad about it. Started and walked away from her own record label. Dated one of the best athletes in America. Always endured much mulatto melodrama.

Now she's recorded a big ballad with Whitney Houston as she prepares to release her new album, tentatively titled The Ones - a collection of all 13 of her No. 1 top singles, plus four bonus tracks. All this to say that the best-selling female recording artist of the decade seems confident yet slightly mystified. Ecstatic but slightly troubled. Expansive and slightly paranoid. Bossy yet gracious.

She's fighting a copyright lawsuit, getting ready to star in films, and still singing all the time. Miss Mariah--much dissed, much loved--makes jokes but isn't one. Like her new single with Jermaine Dupri, she seems a big "Sweetheart." But while she floats like a butterfly, one gets the impression she can also sting like a bee. READ MORE »

Anniversary Day 26: The Making Of "Lovers & Haters"
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 26-May-2007, 6:52PM EDT
In mid-July of 2006, Mariah, with the help of Director Spike Lee, filmed tongue-in-cheek vignettes for The Adventures of Mimi tour. The vignettes are about Mariah's tight dresses, her breasts, her nervous breakdown. Mariah explains the concept, "I want all that stuff in. Basically, it's NOT taking yourself too seriously." Filmed in two scenes: in a club and in a Ladies' room, the video skits premiered at the July 29th Pepsi Smash Live concert in Los Angeles, and later played in early tour shows.

Here is a video of the club scene as recorded by wildhunny from #Schnookiez at the Miami show. You can watch a YouTube video on top or download below!

American Idol Jordin Inspired by Mariah

The splashy "American Idol" finale, which showered Jordin Sparks in confetti in her crowning moment, reflected a time when she was first inspired to be a professional singer.

"I've always loved to sing, but I remember watching an awards show, I don't remember which, and Mariah Carey performing. She was so beautiful, and I knew then that's what I wanted to do."

The song is currently at #81 on iTunes Top 100 Hip Hop/Rap chart.

• From Washingston City Paper: Mariah Carey used to be known for cutting-edge collaborations with rap artists, but "Lil Love" is nothing like her duets with Jay-Z or O.D.B. It sounds like the sort of sweet sludge one might find on a Bow Wow album - in part because Bow Wow himself shows up on the record.

From MTV: Mariah Carey Shakes Off Costume After Costume In New Video
Mariah Carey shakes it off in her next video - so much so that she's practically nude, twice.

Not that we get to see much, of course, but Carey keeps viewers guessing during the Jake Nava-directed "Shake It Off" as she costume-changes her way through a breakup that starts with her in the bath and ends when she drops her robe.

Carey reaches the realization she has to "shake you off" while lying in a bathtub overflowing with water and rose petals: "Just like the Calgon commercial/ I really gotta get up out of here." So she leaves a message for her lover while sitting on top of the dining room table, decked out in bright blue makeup and high heels: "By the time you get this message/ It's gonna be too late/ So don't bother paging me/ 'Cause I'll be on my way," she sings into the phone.

Still, her mind must not be that made up, because she manages to change yet again, before grabbing her bag and heading out the door as she sings, "So I packed up my Louis Vuitton/ Jumped in your ride and took off."

It takes her a bit to jump in that ride, because first she has to stroll down "Emancipation Street," where shops are called "So So Fetch" and "Pink Yet Lavender," and schoolgirls do a sort of shake dance at the pay phones. Jermaine Dupri, who produced the sparse, thumping, mid-tempo track, also pops up on a television screen and on street corners to give a little guidance, with suggestions like "Check this out" and "Bounce."

When Carey does get in the car, with a possible new love in tow, it's time to leave another message to remind her ex that she's found out about his cheating ways "with this one and that one/ By the pool, on the beach, in the streets." Her phone breaks up as she drives past the "Hollyhood" sign, so she tells him, "Hold on," singing, "Save this recording, because I'm never coming back home."

After performing the chorus in two more settings - the bleachers of a football game and a stage with her name in lights ("Mimi," that is) - Carey finally shakes off the song itself, lip-synching the second track where she does more of her vocal gymnastics, instead of the main melody.

She then slips out of her robe and walks into the sunset, with the glare obscuring whether she's wearing anything at this point. If this is her emancipation proclamation, perhaps it's something she should have done before the wedding in "We Belong Together."

However I can say, for Mariah's fans, to please be patient. The film is most definitely on its way."

Meanwhile, Kali Hawk, who apparently also stars in "Lovers and Haters" wrote the following on her MySpace profile: "Recently I came to LA and am now working on films. After a few days I landed a small role in the BMW Film Festival hit 'Issues' playing a waitress opposite Todd Bridges (Diff'rent Strokes). My best job so far was working with Spike Lee and Mariah Carey on the comedy short 'Lovers & Haters'."

On The Cover: Mariah on FHM '02 & Esquire UK '05
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 23-May-2007, 3:14PM EDT
Our magazines section, On The Cover has been updated with two covers featuring Mariah Carey on FHM (Feb. 2002) and Esquire UK (Oct. 2005). Below are excerpts from the cover stories. Many thanks to Fabien and Gary for the scans!

• The Diva Returns
Then where do these stories come from? Everybody thinks I'm like a cartoon character. Just today somebody told me they were surprised I was doing this interview in a hotel because they'd heard I wouldn't walk on carpet! I'm like, "I lived in a hotel for three years, so what else would I walk on? what am I gonna do, fly into the room?" And apparently, I insist on pink toilet paper and pink light bulbs in every room.

But surely, you could if you wanted to - rumour has it you're worth $200 million. Do I have that money? Absolutely not. The record company makes most of the money.

You must be worth much more than Tommy... I don't think so. Maybe as a human being!

If you could be a man for a day, what would you do? Drill a hole, chop down a tree or programme the video... I'd probably be a drag queen. I've never wanted to be a man. I don't have those fantasies of wanting to be one. I'm such a girl - look at how I walk around. I live for girl moments. READ MORE »

• Mariah, Queen of Hearts
Our photo session seems the perfect place to uncover evidence of unappealing traits, but the only obvious difference between Mariah's catering and what the rest of us is that her cheese plate includes some aged Camembert, while we must make do with industrially produced Brie. Her dinner, meanwhile, is a reheated Chinese takeaway, and even that is delayed until two in the morning, first by our seven-hour photoshoot, then by a Dutch TV interview and finally by my interview back at The Dylan hotel. Even then, despite a gruelling day, she is courteous throughout, and fulsome in her apologies for keeping me waiting so long. When I express surprise about this, she tells me, "Being humble is really important."

This is somewhat disingenuous. There are truths about Mariah that are not boring, yet upon which she isn't willing to elaborate. While happy to confess to teenage misdemeanours - "Sometimes we might steal something," she admits. "Lord forgive me now; but I had to have those Guess jeans" - when interviewers stray towards personal relationships, her creamy voice takes on a steely tone and the drawbridge goes up. READ MORE »

Mariah: The song "It's Like That" just came about. I went to Atlanta to work with Jermaine Dupri who's one of my favorite people and one of my favorite producers and he's just so talented. We got together and we wanted to make a really fun party record. Brett [Ratner, director] and I had like countless five in the morning calls about the concept.

Brett: Basically, the concept is, it's really a part one and part two but the first part is basically a party...Mariah's getting married to this guy who's being played by Eric Roberts and Wentworth Miller is a guy who she sees at the party... Of course Jermaine Dupri is hanging out all day 'cause he produced the record. But otherwise Rick Yun will probably come by, Randy Jackson will come by, Bryan McKnight will come by.

Mariah: It's a really great feeling to feel the buzz and the anticipation because when you put so much of yourself into a record and then you feel people actually like getting excited about it and leaking records which is what happened with "It's Like That," it just caught on and stuff. That was something totally new for me. Just in general, just the whole buzz thing, I haven't had anything like this since my first record.

I feel like in the past I have had to use my art as a way to kind of like explain things or let's say I've kind of inhibited by other powers that be, kind of saying, "You should do something in this direction. You should do something in that direction" and that's easy for me because I'm kind of like one of those songwriters who if you tell me, "I want something like this," I can give it to you but if it's just like, "Why don't you and Jermaine go hang out in Atlanta for a couple of days and accomplish some stuff." It's a totally different thing and that's how I approached it this time.

You know what's funny there's like so many people have opinions about how they think I should sing, "We love you when you belt the song out" which I can do for you. Great. But after a while, nobody wants to hear you belting at them for an entire song like subtleties need to come in there and that's something I learned about as I grew as an artist.

Jessica Simpson on Mariah: "She's Amazing"
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 22-May-2007, 4:38PM EDT
Jessica Simpson and sister Ashlee are among the clique of celebrities who've found a weekly home in the glossies whether they like it or not. It must be a very weird existence, I said. Don't you have to put up a wall and not think about it? "It's hard," she replied. "You have no idea."

Meanwhile, Jessica also told me she's gotten a lot of positive reinforcement from another singer who's been through the mill and come out the other side a success: Mariah Carey. "She's amazing," Jessica said.

Tennessee At A Film Festival This September?
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 22-May-2007, 1:44AM EDT
A source in the know told music journalist, Rashmi Shastri that Tennessee will apparently be premiered at a film festival this coming September 2007. No further details were disclosed.

Note:
Tennessee could possibly premiere in Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) which runs from Sept. 7 to 16, 2007. Tennessee's director Aaron Woodley is Canadian and has won a Discovery Award at the TIFF for his first feature independent film, Rhinoceros Eyes. It's likely they submitted Tennessee to TIFF and will premiere it there in September.

There are other Film Festivals held in September and Tennessee could also premiere in:

• Northern New Mexico Film Festival will be held in Las Vegas, New Mexico from Sept. 28 to 30, 2007. The films shown will be a diverse selection from around the world. The festival will have a special focus on films from New Mexico.

• The 45th New York Film Festival, Sept. 28 to Oct. 14, 2007

• New York International Film & Video festival - one of their events will be hosted in Los Angeles in September 2007.

Hopefully, we'll find out more information soon when it's officially announced and confirmed.

News Tidbits
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 21-May-2007, 9:25PM EDT
• In his new Beating The Charts blog, Michael writes about the most current catalogue sales of The Emancipation of Mimi. Check it out!

• Jasmine's Juice (The Voice). The MTV crew were laughing at me cos when I wasn't singing I was transfixed listening to Diana [Ross] who I had previously heard had a ropey voice. I wonder how that rumour spread? Her voice was really honeyed and melodious. When she began Ease On Down The Road (from The Wizard of Oz), I confess I lost it slightly cos me, Mariah and Mariah's folks love that movie and sing that song loud every time!

• The Elusive Scent of Fame (AJC). Increased competition means Catherine Zeta-Jones, David and Victoria Beckham, and Mariah Carey will have to work even harder to make their signature fragrances rise above the pack. That may mean aiming for an audience older than 12.

• Couple Stole Identities of Celebrities (13WHAM-TV, NY). A Henrietta couple is accused of scamming banks out of tens of thousands of dollars by posing as celebrities. The 11-page complaint filed in federal court last week detailed the alleged activities of Shameika Drain Curry and Charles B. Curry, Jr. Authorities say they received mail at their Still Pond Way home addressed to singer Mariah Carey and actress Nia Long.

The singer joined Busta on the set for their third collaboration together but Mariah had to convince the rapper to record the song.
Mariah: Like you need to keep your voice on that 'cause the essence of the way he sounded was just, i enjoyed it.
Busta: She definitely gave me that little extra spunk to feel like I could hold a note or something.

And speaking of spunk Mariah told ET that she designed her super-sexy outfit.
Mariah: It's kind of like a combination of Harley-Davidson meets world kind of a hip hop-ish thing. Automatic Princess. We're trying to give them a little bit of that but I'm here with Busta so you have to you know, try and represent properly.

Director Chris Robinson says the video's vibe was inspired by Mariah.
Chris: We created a set to what she was going to wear. Mariah's a star so you know she brings so much production value to a project like this you know, what with Busta Rhymes who's a huge star, you put Mariah Carey in the mix is like.

Mariah's look. Mariah's sound. Mariah's energy. But this ain't no Mariah concert. It's the making of her new video "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and to keep it real, the Grammy winner packed the Los Angeles Auditorium with real-life Mariah fans. "I have some great fans who are amazing and who come through thick and through thin."

Thousands responded to an invitation on Mariah's web site to join in the 2-day shoot but only a select few made the cut. A few hundred! The scene is a '70s-style rock concert, a restaging of a scene from Bette Midler's Oscar-nominated classic, The Rose.

The Making Of "Boy (I Need You)"

Making The Video: "Boy (I Need You)" - MTV
Type:
MPG | Size: 173.0 MB
Download: [ Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 ]

Mariah: This song is called "Boy (I Need You)" or "Oh Boy Part II." Obviously it's based on Cam'Ron's "Oh Boy" which when I heard the beat for this record I was like "I have to work with whoever did this beat." It happened to be Just Blaze who's one of my favorite producers and I kept saying, "I wanna do something like 'Oh Boy'" and he was like, "Or we could just redo the track" 'cause so many singers have been like wanting to loop it. I took it in a different direction lyrically obviously than what the original was saying but I made it all about a girl who's like kind of got a crush on a guy. She's talking about being infatuated with the guy. It's not really that deep of a story. It has the basic premise.

Joseph Kahn, director: The concept of the video is a Tokyo pop concept...It has to do more with Speed Racer and Godzilla, and basically what used to be the perception of the future back in the '60s. This video has it all. It has a story. It has sets. It has special effects. We know there's a Mafia, there's an office, there's a bodyguard that is in love with Mariah, there's an escape, there's a chase. We get the sense that Mariah is the prized possession of some crazy gangster guy who owns offices and recording studios.

Mariah: This is just Joseph's world. The way he sees me as like this sort of half-animated character and like half-regular girl who's just fun and silly. I think that what's going to come across that is really the closest thing to me into who I am as a person is like the fun aspect and like the element of humor which is what gets me through everything like everybody that I'm drawn to is like eternally 12 in their minds haha.

Our magazines section, On The Cover has been updated to now include the December 2002 edition of Glamour UK. Many thanks to Fabien for the scans!

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mariah?
In the year since a tired and emotional Mariah Carey suffered a very public breakdown, she has bravely soldiered on. David A Keeps meets a woman trying to find the proper balance between diva and doormat

The scrutiny was intense, but she survived it. "I just went about my life and I went to therapy and did things that were healing. I think a lot of celebrities go through stuff like that and their 'people' just keep it quiet. But I feel comfortable enough to sit here and talk about it like, 'Hey, yeah, I'm human. You try to do what I did and let's see where you end up.' I'm not angry. I actually think it's good for people to see that someone who was put up on a pedestal, who looks nice and happy in her videos, can go through stuff and come out the other end OK."

She's even gained some much-needed perspective about success. "I always strove for this. In some ways it's been the answer; in some ways it's put more of a load on my shoulders. I clearly know how much I have, but for a long time I felt, 'I have so much--why should I expect to be happy as well?'"

And she would rather you didn't break out the violins. "I used to be one of those people sitting there in my little shack watching someone on TV telling their woes and I would take the remote and say, 'Oh please, you're rich.' Click. But the truth is, money doesn't solve everything. And I don't feel that I should be less entitled to emotional support because I have financial success."

Anniversary Day 18: The Making of "Through The Rain"

The Making Of "Through The Rain"

"Through The Rain" Release Interview - Extra

It's a sight millions of Mariah Carey fans thought they might never see again but this is no mirage. The superstar singer-songwriter smiling brightly these days - carefree, confident and on the verge of a remarkable comeback.
Mariah: That's the way I am. I always try to take a negative and turn into a positive.

Extra caught up with the stunningly curvaceous pop queen in New York where she's shooting a video for the first single from her upcoming album. The song, already a popular radio request, is appropriately titled "Through The Rain."
Mariah: I made it through the rain and that's the concept of the song.

The rain Mariah is referring to could be any of the personal problems that wore down on the songbird over the last eighteen months. The seemingly endless storms sent Mariah into seclusion. Then finding inspiration on the solitude, the songs started coming.
Mariah: Music has always been the thing that's brought me through everything in my life. The process of writing and singing is a very healing process for me.

Mariah's spent several months writing and recording on the island of Capri in Italy, ocassionally flying back to New York to visit her ailing father. Then even more rain.
Mariah: It was a difficult time. He actually just passed away this July 4th so a lot has gone on. A lot has transpired while I was making this album, from the start of making this album and you know, it's definitely, you hear it in the record.

Mariah is enjoying sunny days again. And at the church where she shot the final scene for her new video, Mariah has no fear of failure or criticism, only faith in her fans and faith in the the strength she found within herself to carry on.
Mariah: There's no reason to sit around and stress about it like "Oh what's this one gonna say? What's that one gonna say?" Nobody can really upset me that badly by saying something anymore. I just now have to please myself and please my fans.

John Norris, MTV: Two words - she's back.
Mariah: I've been here for years [laughs]. Working on this album has been really like something that was great to immerse myself in because I realized how much that really always has been my saving grace.

John: "Through The Rain" is a pretty song, an inspirational song kind of about persevering. And a lot of people are going to hear this song and say, "Hey, it's a clear reference to the year you've been through."
Mariah: Well, "Through The Rain" was the first song I wrote for this album. And I really did not write it for the album. I wrote it for myself. The stuff they talked about in the tabloids, and the things that were so overly exaggerated, you know, that's one aspect. But I also went through a lot of personal stuff, a lot of family stuff this year, you know, losing a parent is an intense thing for anybody and so it's like it's brought me to another place.

John: Tell me about this video?
Mariah: It's sort of like an interracial couple who are, sort of Romeo and Juliet but it's like, it's set in the '60s and they are like torn apart.

John: Safe to say this is gonna be most sentimental or maybe vulnerable record yet?
Mariah: It's not like I'm just going to suddenly write like this woeful album. You know what I mean, like "Oh, misery." No, like I choose to turn those things into positives 'cause that's how I get through life.

CD Review: Thugs Revive Career With 'Strength' Of Peers
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 18-May-2007, 2:27AM EDT
Those pressed into service on "Strength & Loyalty" include pop stars Mariah Carey and will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas, rappers Akon, Bow Wow and the Game and upper-echelon beatmakers Swizz Beatz and Jermaine Dupri. They provide expert cover and sometimes relief from the Bone Thugs' familiar blabby, intertwining vocal delivery.

The group can also show a softer side without stooping to syrupy-ness. Mariah Carey's sensual crooning is the first voice you hear on "Lil' L.O.V.E." and before listeners know it, they're hooked and drawn into the midst of a seductive club jam. Dupri, who specializes in such designer dance floor material, helms the song's dense, layered keyboard noodling and synthetic bass pattern that while completely formulaic, could've been a contender on the R&B charts if Carey was its sole focus. Instead, the song's potential is blocked by the Thugs' and Bow Wow's loquaciousness on the mic. [Read full review here]

On The Cover: Mariah on Latina August 2001 Issue
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 15-May-2007, 5:31PM EDT
Our magazines section, On The Cover has been updated to now include the August 2001 issue of Latina. Many thanks to Fabien for the scans!

Mariah Land
A new movie and album. An on-off relationship with Luis Miguel. A trip to Venezuela to search for her family's roots. Mariah Carey's a busy woman

"You mean there's a Hello Kitty toaster?" Mariah Carey exclaims incredulously. She has a major thing for the little white cat with a bow on her ear. She has the pink Kitty boom box, her electronic organizer covered in tiny Kitty stickers, and she now quickly grabs her cell phone to tell her friends--who are out shopping--that they have a new mission: get to the Sanrio store before it closes. "It imprints Kitty's face on the toast." she says. "Find it."

Latina: Do you speak Spanish?
Mariah Carey: You know, I really wanted to learn Spanish and become fluent, but I don't have time. And that sounds horrible, but I barely have time to be by myself right now. But I should learn.

L: Can you at least curse in Spanish?
MC: Yeah, a little bit. I'm happy just to curse in English or give somebody a freakin' roundhouse kick.

L: I guess people fill their needs in different ways.
MC: I have different things that need to be filled, like my being a workaholic. My fans are like an extended family to me, leading back to what we were talking about before about belonging to a group. That's what they've become. I just want to be accepted as myself, and what my fans have done is accept me for me. And if they like the song and they feel the emotion of the music, they get this sense of who I am. I really feel like they've filled this thing that I always have, this empty space. READ MORE »

Mariah: "What's going on? We're having a good time."
John Norris, MTV: "Some people would think that getting you guys together, you and Mariah, would be like [Whitney: "Hell, huh?"] Middle East negotiation or something, right?"
Whitney: "Wow! Oooh..."

Mariah: "What happened was Jeffrey Katzenberg, he invited me to come to the studio and view the movie, and we had dinner. It was very grand, elaborate, very Hollywood."
Whitney: "Jeffrey Katzenberg out of Dreamworks. I think he said that he told Mariah that I was gonna do it."

Mariah: "So he was like, 'Would you like to do this duet with Whitney and I was like, 'Gee, say.' That was cool."
Whitney: "He told Mariah, he told me that I was gonna, told Mariah I was gonna do it, told Mariah, told me that Mariah was gonna do it so we ended up doing it."
John: "So you're never gonna know exactly who said 'Yes' first."
Whitney: "Right. So we just did it."

John: "Do you remember back in the day like the first Whitney Houston record you ever heard?"
Mariah: "The first thing I ever heard Whitney on when she was singing for Kashif and it was a song called, 'Thinking About You.' I remember my friend going, 'Listen to this girl sing.' I said, 'Wow, she's really amazing.'"

John: "Do you remember first hearing Mariah's music or when she first came along? What was it like?"
Whitney: "[Sings] I had a vision of love. Yup! I remember.
John: "Was it all good when you like, who's this young girl...
Whitney: "Yeah, it was like, 'Kinda has my tone. Not quite me. Who is she?'"

"Actually Jeffrey Katzenberg from Dreamworks, I guess, got us both, showed us both the movie, you know, separately and got us both excited about the project and it's sort of a message song. The Prince of Egypt is about Moses and so, if we were ever gonna do come together on any kind of record, this is definitely the right one and I really like, the coolest thing to me is that after all the drama and everybody making it like we had a rivalry, she was just really cool and we had a really good time in the studio. News From Serbia

Serbian contestant Marija Serifovic won the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest with the beautiful, powerful ballad "Molitva" (Prayer) last night. This is the first time that Serbia competed in Eurovision as an independent country, and the first time to win!

Marija had her television debut in 1998 on the Serbian TV show, "Za Sva Vremena" where she sang Mariah Carey's "My All." She has always cited Mariah and Whitney Houston as her musical influences. In her interview with BBC, Marija said that her victory was about her singing and not her looks or over the top perfomance. She claimed it was a triumph of songcraft over showmanship, "I like to hear the music, not watch it."

To the right, watch a video of Marija performing her winning song, "Molitva" at Eurovision.

I think it was actually Mr. Clive Davis' after-party from one of the awards shows a couple of months ago and a friend of mine Keith who works at Arista, who also used to be a radio programmer, he was the first person to play my music ever, introduced me to the guys and we just started talking and they were cool and my mom's Irish, Irish-American, and we started talking about that, and you know, then I think it might have been Keith's suggestion that we should collaborate and do something 'global' you know. I had done the cover of 'Against All Odds' and mainly thinking about the European market and stuff and I thought it would just be a cool thing to do to kind of turn into a duet and combine what they do with what I do."

"The song 'Against All Odds' was something that I used to listen to when I was growing up and it was one of my favorite songs and I had specific memories of like being at certain places and hearing that song and singing that song, and I just thought it was a very, quite a miserable romantic song and I saw Phil Collins when I was at, I was at some show and he was there and he was in the other studio and he came in and listened to me singing and it was really a completely random moment because who would have known we would be together at the same place. And it was cool because he was really responsive and really complimentary and you know, when you grow up listening to someone and you do the song and they like it, it's a good thing. Then you could have been like, 'Please don't do that, it really kind of sucks.' "

"In the early '80s, it's more like the beginning of hip-hop music and sort of like the dance music that was going on in that era, like 82. Not disco, more you know that period that really is to a lot of people like, it just evokes childhood memories and it really takes you back. So I'm really excited about it. I'm excited about a lot of things but, you know, I've a got a lot of work on my plate, a lot of things ahead of me but what else is new."

Anniversary Day 11: The Making Of "Loverboy"

Hubcap Model
Mariah: "So the name of the video is 'Loverboy' and I guess the loose concept is that David LaChapelle's fantasy of making me into a hubcap salesgirl [laughs]. David LaChapelle is like an amazing, amazing artist. I know he doesn't usually do videos. His concept is kind of like muscle-car-girl-fantasy trip."

"There's a scene of me infront of hubcaps. There's like twelve different versions of me. It's kind of like I'm trying to do the job really well so people would buy the hubcaps. And then at some point I graduate to being the 'car' model."

"Okay, I'm not even up to the level where you model the cars. I just model hubcaps [laughs]. That's the beauty of this theme. It's a simplicity."

David: "This is boys and cars. Boys have cars. Boys have hot chicks. It's a chick in a car. And that's all it is."

Racetrack Scene
Mariah: "We got Ludacris, Shawna, Brat, 22, you know, they're all in a race car thing. Then I'm gonna be like the flag girl at the race. They're gonna be racing cars and I'm gonna be flagging them down. Somehow, I miraculously become a trophy girl too."

Ludacris: "It's a pleasure to work with her. She's really a creative person. She wrote the song herself. She's got a movie coming out, this is the soundtrack to it so she's working hard. She's just hustlin'."

Mariah: "The ride on top of the car in a pink little number was my favorite setup because that is something I would really do in real life. Everything else I know is kind of racy or whatever, and it's weird because I can do that kind of thing but in real life I'm Mary Poppins [laughs]."

Da Brat: "Today I am here for my homegirl, my best friend, M to the C - Mariah Carey. We're shooting the video for the first single, 'Loverboy.' Me and my new artist 22 from the Chi-town."

Mariah: "I have this much fun whenever I can because life might as well be a party otherwise why live it?"

Cake Scene
Mariah: "The scene in the video where I'm popping out of the cake, I wanted to pop out of the cake since I was little. It's all sort of just a big party and the celebration of the loverboy but there is no, I don't have a loverboy in this video. I don't have a boyfriend in this video. Basically the car is the loverboy."

"I'm about to pop out of the cake. Basically, this is my cake moment. And nobody wanted me into the cake thing. And I'm like, 'YOU GOTTA LET ME DO THE CAKE!'"

"The thing about David is, is that I totally trust him and he's the best. And I would never do this concept with anybody else in the world."

Mariah's Pacifiah Grows Into A Movement
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 10-May-2007, 6:30PM EDT
Often times, trend-setters aren't the first ones to enact the trend, but they are the people who do it well enough and have the charisma to make it mainstream. Mariah Carey wasn't the first artist to utilize a rapper on a song, but when she teamed with Ol' Dirty Bastard on the remix to "Fantasy," Mariah helped usher in a new era in music.

In his new Looking In blog, Mariah's Pacifiah Grows Into A Movement, Jason writes about the Mariah pairing with ODB, how it made waves and opened up a new avenue of popularity in music.

"If this comes out good, can I get a freaking MTV Video award or a nomination at least?"

"It is so ambitious. I don't know how much of the original concept is gonna end up actually being on MTV so we're gonna have to see. I mean I'm really working hard here okay? This is Brett Ratner, a great director. This is a lot of work going into this. Swing it on home with the nomination."

"The song is called "Heartbreaker." The theme of the song basically is about a girl who keeps going back to a guy who's really screwed up and treats her badly. He's the 'heartbreaker.' The video is about a guy who's cheating on me, who I'm in love with. And my friends bring me to a movie theater to catch him in the act. A whole bunch of drama ensues after that."

Fight Scene
Brett Ratner: "Mariah is like 'here' with Jackie Chan. On the kicks, they're on an equal level. Don't let one of her kicks connects."

Mariah: "First of all, I've been thoroughly abused today okay? I was kicked, I've been dragged across the floor, I was pulling up on this thing and my arm muscle had totally and completely meshed."

The "Other" Mariah: "I'm trying to adapt. I'm excited about this new look we've got going."

Vignettes
Ratner: "The vignettes in the video are scenes that you've seen numerous times in many movies. We have the '50s vignette. We have the gangster vignette. We have the gangster vignette with Jay-Z in the jacuzzi."

Mariah: "I really wanna have Jay-Z on this record and he heard it and he liked it and he did it."

Jay-Z: "The hot tub was about 150 degrees. It may look like it's enjoyable on screen but that was so tough y'all. I couldn't breathe. Trooper kid, you heard."

VH1 Save The Music Foundation To Honor Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 10-May-2007, 9:35AM EDT
Mariah Carey and Jon Bon Jovi will join in celebrating the VH1 Save The Music Foundation's 10th Anniversary Gala on September 20th at Lincoln Center in New York City. Jon Bon Jovi will perform as part of a special tribute to VH1 Save The Music founder John Sykes during a ceremony that will also honor Mariah Carey for her unyielding support of the Foundation's mission.

"I am thrilled to have Jon Bon Jovi and Mariah Carey share in the celebration of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation's 10th anniversary," says Paul Cothran, Executive Director of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. "It would be hard to look back on the past ten years and recount each of our triumphs and successes without recalling individuals such as these two artists that have donated so much of their time and efforts to restoring music education programs across the country."

During the elaborate 10th anniversary celebration, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation will honor Mariah Carey for her outstanding dedication to the organization over the years. Since 1998, Mariah Carey has been instrumental in helping the VH1 Save The Music Foundation achieve their goals by volunteering her time and efforts in various ways. Mariah has performed at several benefit shows including the very first "VH1 Divas" in 1998 and has been active in raising public awareness about the benefits of music education during events such as NBC's "VH1 Save The Music Today! Week." In 2006, Mariah donated the Escada dress she wore in her Intel Centrino Duo commercial, which later sold at auction to benefit The Foundation.

John Mayer, who can be seen in one of The Foundation's newest public service announcements, will co-headline the event. Tim Gunn of Project Runway will also be on hand to emcee a live auction, which will feature one-of-a-kind items and experiences from VH1 Save The Music partners. Additional honorees, participants and attendees will be announced in the coming months.

Mariah #17 on USA Today's Biggest Public Meltdowns
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 10-May-2007, 12:18AM EDT
USA Today has compiled what they think are the 25 memorable public meltdowns over the past quarter-century. Mariah Carey, joining a group of famous figures from politics, sports, religion and entertainment; makes the list at #17.

17 'Extreme exhaustion'
Singer Mariah Carey, on MTV's Total Request Live on July 19, 2001, handed out popsicles and then started disrobing. "I just want one day off when I can go swimming and eat ice cream and look at rainbows," she told host Carson Daly. Hospitalization for "extreme exhaustion" soon followed.

Red-faced and weeping televangelist Jimmy Swaggart begging for forgiveness in front of millions of viewers in 1988 tops the Public Meltdowns list, while boxer Mike Tyson biting off Evander Holyfield's ears during a Las Vegas match in 1997, and anchor Dan Rather walking out of the live CBS Evening News set in 1987, take the #2 and #3 spots, respectively. The full Top 25 list can be viewed here.

Daniels Promises Carey Will Surprise
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 09-May-2007, 9:22PM EDT
Sitting in Joe Allen's Orso the other eve, to my table comes my pal, movie producer Lee Daniels, the man who shepherded Halle Berry to an Oscar in "Monster's Ball."

I asked Lee about his latest film project called "Tennessee," filmed down in that very state, and he burbled on about his star, Mariah Carey. It seems the divine diva next door, as I call her, had been a doll to direct, even forsook her 6-inch heels when the characterization called for flats, and it's Lee's belief that she is going to surprise us this time out. (Mariah's film career took a big hit when she made "Glitter," but she lived to overcome.)

Striking an all-American pose aboard a fighter jet, a ponytailed Mariah Carey enlisted California's Edwards Air Force Base for her latest music video. But when it came time to take a ride in one of the air forces' high-flying machines, Mariah got cold feet. "Somebody said your ears could get hurt so I can't risk that. But they said they won't go, you know, they won't break the sound barrier."

Mariah worked closely on the video concept with director Brett Ratner who found her to be a darling of a diva. "She's like an old movie star from the '50s really because she knows where she looks best in what light, and what side of her face looks great ...so it's really interesting to work with her."

And Mariah loved it too. Although she didn't always follow strict military protocol. "Signing, you know, people's uniforms and hats, and I'm like, 'Am I gonna get in trouble for this?' [laughs]"

When you were a little girl, did you watch the footage of Marilyn Monroe in Korea? Is that kind of the inspiration for this? "Definitely. We've all seen different entertainers go on and entertain the troops in various places or just go to different bases and do shows and I just, you know, it's very glamorous, obviously inspired by the Marilyn thing."

Not just the video's look that's drenched in nostalgia, it turns out both Mariah and director Brett Ratner have a reason to honor the woman who first sang "I Still Believe" - Brenda K. Starr. "I was a back-up singer for her when I was, right out of high school and she was very supportive and like a big sister. She used to bring me shoes and coats and things. I didn't have any money."

Ever since Eric Roberts landed the role of Thompson on Heroes, he has been reveling in his newfound spotlight. But, as Eric explained in a recent conference call, that's not the only reason he's become so popular.

"It's a combination, I think, of Heroes and a couple of hit music videos. The Mariah Carey and The Killers videos have given me a whole new audience under 15 that I didn't have before. I thought I was really famous up until I got Heroes and I had no idea how much more famous I could get overnight, and it's been fun."

"I kept it in my mind, that melody and those lyrics and never sang it to anybody and I had the chords in my head. And when I was in the transitional period between leaving the 'big house' where I lived and 'big house' having a double meaning 'cause I do call it Sing Sing. And I think we can laugh about it now 'cause it was kind of 'prison-esque' and all I did there was sing, sing. So, whatever. But when I was leaving that place, which is actually a beautiful place but I wasn't happy 'cause it was not a healthy situation that I was in in terms of the relationship. I was reflecting on my life and so the first part of the song when I spoke about

I was a wayward child
With the weight of the world
That I held deep inside

that whole part was just looking out and going, 'Wow! I've come a really long way.' The second part was the

Funny how one can learn
To grow numb to the madness
And block it away
I left the worst unsaid
Let it all dissipate
And I try to forget

that sort of taking you from adolescence to the stardom point because that's what happened to me. I went from literally, you know, being a teenager right into 'Smack! Here I am' with, you know, this big record and a career which was a huge blessing and a dream come true but I was reflecting upon it at that point."

Nelly Working Up A Collabo With Mariah And Janet
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 07-May-2007, 9:17AM EDT
Jermaine Dupri is in the studio trying to make even more hits - with everybody. He's producing an all-ballad album for Jagged Edge, then you have Usher, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and one of his best friends, Nelly.

"Nelly's got a crazy collaboration he's trying to put together, which is him, Janet and Mariah Carey all on one song," JD said. "That's what he wants. If he could convince them to do it, it would be crazy. He wants Janet to rap a 16-bar verse, he wants Mariah to sing the hook and he's gonna do two verses. He has it all planned out. You ask him about it! This is what he wants; he's 100-percent deadlocked into it. And I think he's doing a record with Bruce Springsteen. You know he always has to do one of those! My two records [that J.D. has produced for Nelly so far], he's gonna have some people on them - I won't tell it yet. I don't want to jinx the record.

The song, "My All" gave her 13 number one hits. The most ever for a female artist - all by the age of 28. For the video, she chose to team up with one of the biggest directors in the biz.

"I really, really loved working with Herb Ritts because I've always wanted to work with him and I was so happy to have the opportunity to do it on 'My All' and it was cool because I knew I didn't have to worry about anything like I knew that he was more of a perfectionist than me which is a good thing and I'd like to be able to work with more people like that because he gave me a cut and basically I loved the cut except for one or two shots. And that's not standard for me."

Neither was this scene [shows love scene]. But like a pro, Mariah somehow struggled through.

"That was pretty awkward. But, hey, it could be scrubbing floors you know, doing something that is a little bit more difficult work but that was Herb's thing. Herb had a vision so I went with the flow and he was a nice guy."

Acceptance Speech
"I also...a little emotional, a little emotional. I just really would like to thank Neil Portnow and the New York Chapter of the Recording Academy for all that they do in giving back to the community and providing services and recognizing the importance of arts and music education because there's nothing like it. That's all I paid attention to in school. I'm sorry I know I shouldn't say that. A little emotional. Anyway, thank you guys so much for this evening. I really believe together, our organizations: Camp Mariah, the Fresh Air Fund, Make-A-Wish; the Recording Academy can really make a difference and I look forward to doing much more work together in the future and you know, all the glory goes to God and I'm very grateful that my pastor, Pastor Clarence Keaton is here tonight to share this joy with me. Thank you so much. God bless you."

Introduction
She has one of the most recognizable and recognized voices in music. 2 Grammy awards, 9 American Music awards, 4 Vibe awards, Billboard's Artist of the Decade, an astonishing 150 million albums sold worldwide thus far. There is no question, Mariah Carey is on top of the world.

In April, her latest release, The Emancipation of Mimi debuted at number one, giving Mariah the highest first week sales in her career. That album has gone on to sell over 7 million albums worldwide to date and with the release of her massive hit single and 16th number one song, "We Belong Together," it makes her the only active songwriter and performer with the opportunity to surpass the Beatles and Elvis Presley as the artist with the most number one singles in history.

Already the best-selling female performer of all time and the most influential vocalist of her generation, Mariah Carey continues to set the standard of excellence, not only for herself but for those with whom she collaborates. And while her voice has won her awards, accolades and the adulation of million of fans worldwide, it is the voice she's given to those who might not have been heard otherwise that is the most personally satisfying. Operation Smile, The National Adoption Center, VH1's Save The Music, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Camp Mariah - all are shining examples of her selfless commitment to children's causes. Mariah's humanitarian efforts are equally impressive as the millions who have changed lives will attest. The U.S. peace-keeping forces in Kosovo, the victims of 9/11, her performance at the Live 8 concert this past summer in London, Katrina - all have had their spirits raised and hopes restored by Mariah's undaunted devotion to making a difference. In 2000, Congress recognized Mariah Carey for her charity work awarding her the highly-coveted Horizon Award.

Tonight, we honor her for her songwriting, her production, her voice, her generosity, and her vision. The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences is proud to recognize Mariah Carey as a recipient of the 2005 Recording Academy Honors.

Billboard Reviews Bone Thugs' Strength & Loyalty
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 05-May-2007, 8:55PM EDT
Strength and Loyalty
BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY
Genre: HIP-HOP
Label: Full Surface/Interscope

With help from the ubiquitous Akon, Bone Thugs are climbing the charts once again with "I Tried," which jumped 35-7 on The Billboard Hot 100 last week. The cut introduces "Strength and Loyalty," a relatively solid return that should bring some new fans into the flock. Throughout, it seems the group is trying to re-create its past success by repeating its previously successful musical patterns. Unfortunately, it might not be such an easy road, because its audience is now 10 years older. For example, "Lil L.O.V.E.," featuring a melodious and round duet with Mariah Carey, is their 2007 version of the 1998 hit "Breakdown," while "Order My Steps" is this year's "Tha Crossroads." Featuring gospel giant Yolanda Adams, the latter cut is a random and refreshing duet that starts off quoting Jeremiah 10:23-24. Diehard fans will be satisfied, and newcomers will be enticed to sing along.

Mediabase Airplay Update: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "Lil L.O.V.E." featuring Mariah Carey & Bow Wow has registered 2.419 million audience impressions, with 186 spins as of 5/4/2007.

"Lil L.O.V.E." is currently the most requested song on KS 107.5's 4-Play at 4 With Dreena in Denver, Colorado and on 98.5 KLUC's Bob's Big 8 at 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The song places at #6 on Wild 94.9's Playlist in San Francisco, California, request line: (888) 333-9490. Call to request or vote online!

Cool & Dre To Work On Mariah's New Album?
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 05-May-2007, 7:54PM EDT
In an interview with Mix Tape Kings, Cool, one-half of the hit-making producing duo, Cool & Dre, vaguely hints at a possible collaboration with Mariah Carey.

Even with all his success, Cool is still partially blind to that fact. "When did Cool & Dre feel like they finally made it?" Cool laughs for a few seconds and yells out "Yesterday!" Of course he was kidding. But he makes it clear that such ideas don't really stir their minds. What can I say, the guy is humble. He continues though, "...But when you got Mariah Carey on your phone asking for a hit, then..." He laughs and doesn't finish the sentence; but you get the point.

Meanwhile, Cool & Dre are set to work with Whitney Houston and Christina Milian on their respective upcoming albums.

When Luther Vandross announced plans to record an album of classics, Mariah Carey jumped in with a suggestion: "Let's remake the Lionel Richie-Diana Ross chart-topping hit, 'Endless Love.'"

Luther: "She was excited about the idea that I was doing the album and she was suggesting songs left and right and she suggested 'Endless Love' and that she wanted to sing it with me. We are very excited about this record...our voices are very compatible and end result's gonna be fabulous."

"Walter and I wrote an idea...the beginning of the idea which became this song. And I kept it and I loved it so much and I said, 'This would be incredible for Boyz II Men to sing with me.' It had a theme about someone who has passed away and it had the chorus: I know that you're shining down on me from heaven. Nate had written an idea that was completely similar in the theme and melodically he could sing it over the chorus."

Video: Mariah on Larry King: 50 Years of Pop Culture
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 04-May-2007, 3:28AM EDT
Mariah Carey was one of the pop icons featured on Larry King: 50 Years of Pop Culture that aired earlier tonight on CNN.

[Watch a YouTube video on right or download a video file below]

Giving her thoughts about her interview with Larry King back in 2002, Mariah says, "I think I was probably more concerned with the lighting." [laughs]

"I think during that time a lot of the questions were unsettling. Basically I came out of the studio. That was really cool. I just got interviewed by Larry King. I've been watching him my whole life and wow! this is amazing."

And commenting on a Larry King reference in the movie, America's Sweethearts, she says, "It is one of my favorite moments in a movie ever."

Fewer Call Themselves Multiracial
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 03-May-2007, 7:57PM EDT
The share of Americans who identify themselves as multiracial has shrunk this decade, a trend that defies expectations in an increasingly diverse nation.

Less than 2 percent of the U.S. population checked off more than one race in the Census Bureau's 2005 American Community Survey (ACS). In two Census surveys in 2000, more than 2 percent did.

The data show that the nation continues to wrestle with racial identity even in the face of growing diversity, he says. "We're a society where we still basically assume everyone is in one race," he says.

Multiracial groups fought that concept in the 1990s. The small but vocal movement gained momentum after golfer Tiger Woods proclaimed his race "Cablinasian," (Caucasian, black, American Indian and Asian) in 1997. The spotlight hit other multiracial celebrities, including singer Mariah Carey, actress Halle Berry and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

Mixed-race Americans lobbied the government to stop requiring people to choose one race category on Census and other federal forms. The 2000 Census for the first time allowed people to check more than one race. About 2.4 percent did.

Jungmiwha Bullock, president of the Association of MultiEthnic Americans, is not surprised. Some believe that identifying more than one race negates racial identity, she says. "To say you're black and Asian doesn't mean you're not black," she says. "I don't say I'm half-black and half-Korean. I'm 100 percent black, and I'm 100 percent Korean."

The Census numbers "clearly underestimate how many people are mixed race," says Daniel Lichter, professor at Cornell University who has studied intermarriages. "People aren't willing to define themselves as such."

Many multiracial people identify themselves as black if they grew up in a black neighborhood, he says.

"There's a lot of pressure from society to choose one race," says Sara Ferry, 28, a school psychologist in Philadelphia who has a black father and a Chinese-American mother. "That's unfortunate."

Mariah Carey is in for a scary ride in her new music video. Not only does she sing as she spins around on a roller coaster, she's calling the shots as a first-time director. "It's not about like 'Whoa, I wanna be a director now' and like 'Here I am, director-woman.' It's just to get the result that I want."

In the video you'll see plenty of her face that's 'cause she's being tossed around in mind-boggling speeds. But Mariah who didn't ride her first roller coaster until three years ago is hanging tough. "I can actually sing the song and perform it on the roller coaster because I'm not scared being on the roller coaster. It's like kid's stuff for me. I'm a big roller coaster queen.

On The Cover: Mirabella, May 1999
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 03-May-2007, 3:21PM EDT
Our magazines section, On The Cover has been updated to now include scans from the May 1999 issue of Mirabella.

There's Something About Mariah
Mirabella - May 1999 Issue

"Until Butterfly, Mariah says, "I couldn't do anything different, so I don't know what my image is now."

I tell Mariah that, to a large degree, the perception of her is a spandex-clad diva who lives in her limo, parties the night away with everyone from Sean "Puffy" Combs to Donald Trump, and says things like "When I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff." That this fictitious quote was reported by respected publications all over the globe, as well as on-line, would tend to support Mariah's theory about a smear campaign.

"That f**king ridiculous mess," she says. "Some pathetic soul is trying to make me look like an idiot. It's the price of fame in the age of the Internet. What am I gonna do? Get in a tizzy about it? Whatever."

When you're a larger-than-life celebrity, people can't resist shooting at such a big target. For instance, poking fun at Mariah seems to be the only thing that ex-gal pals Madonna and Sandra Bernhard still have in common. The former said of VH1's recent Divas Live special--in which Mariah sang with Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, and Gloria Estefan--that she had trouble seeing the performance through Mariah's hairdo. Carey, to her credit, admits, "The hair was threatening to take over the stage. But when I see those remarks being made, it's disappointing. I respect her...

And yeah, I'm a freaking mutt, I'm a triracial freak, but she implied I was a white person trying to be black. And it's offensive to me, because I've been a victim of racism on both sides. So Sandra Bernhard calling me a 'phony white bitch' and saying that I was 'acting niggerish' is acceptable because she figures, 'Who's gonna stick up for her?'" READ MORE »

Excerpt from the Interview:
Everything seems to be happening for Mariah Carey. Her newest single, "Make It Happen" has made it to #10 on the charts and is rising. It's a song close to Mariah's heart - a song about starting out with nothing and becoming successful.

"It's sort of a story that is semi-autobiographical. It's sort of trying to send a message to young people, but people of all ages, that if you really believe in something and you really set your mind that that's what you want to do, you can make it happen."

"As I'm singing it and I'm up there performing for these people, it's kind of like you know it's me realizing that this is happening. This is happening for me you know so it is very emotional."

Excerpt from the Interview:
Suddenly there's 21-year-old from Long Island who was a major pop star, drawing big crowds when she made personal appearances. To date though, she has not staged a live performance tour to promote her music and none is planned for the near future.

"Some people are just more comfortable in the studio. I'm more comfortable because it's a controlled environment. It's a creative environment. That's where I'm at my best. That's what I do. I'm an introverted person and it's hard for me to get out there and really Hollywood and really you know, ham it up. It's just not who I am. But I do wanna get out there and see the people who supported me and perform for those people and do the best that I can do."

"I try to let myself go a lot more on this album as far as being a lot more raw, letting a lot of my true influences come out and being there really intricately involved with every stage of the song, production-wise - writing, vocal arrangements and you know, I feel like I let myself come across a lot better and a lot more, I was a lot more free on this album. Definitely more fun. [Suppose it doesn't do as well?] Then it doesn't do as well and there's nothing I can do about it. I think that I have to just continue to do music that I can be proud of, and that's real and that will stay around for a while."

In an exclusive interview with Terrell of MiddleChild Promotions, gospel singer Karen Clark-Sheard revealed that one of her future projects includes a collaboration with Mariah Carey.

Terrell: Cool. Now you mentioned Aretha Franklin, I read somewhere that you're supposed to be working with her with your sisters and whatnot, but the fans want to know, what are some of the collaborations that you have in store for us in the near future?

Karen Clark-Sheard: Well, of course Aretha reached out to us, she has a production that she is coming out with that she wanted us to be a part of. So we're looking to colleborate with her in the future... And also Mariah Carey as well, I'll do something with her in the near future as well.
