On The Cover Additions: Magazines from 1991
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 30-Jun-2008, 7:18PM EDT
Our On The Cover section has been updated with three magazines from 1991. Check them out below. More magazines will be added in the coming days, stay tuned!

Q (UK) - September 1991
Mariah Carey
For her second album, The Wind (released in September and trailered by a new single, Emotions), co-writer Ben Margulies has been sidelined, as have the host of studio wizards. Now it's just down to Mariah and two producers/co-writers - one for the dance tunes, the other for the ballads - as this self-confessed "introverted person" copes with the stardom so recently thrust upon her.

"When you start believing the hype, that's when you go downhill. I definitely feel the same person I was two years ago when no one wanted to listen to my tape. That's what keeps me grounded. Maybe because I'm doing the same thing, music - that's what gives me the most pleasure. The rush of being new and hot can fade - it will fade - but the music will always be there."

Music - 1991
Mariah Carey: Emotions
The solidly groove of the smash title track has already slithered its way up the charts, with the Grammy-winning singer showing off every note of her magnificent multi-octave voice. She's in similarly perfect form on such moving ballads as So Blessed, while her purring adds sensual beauty to smoky night-club crooners like And You Don't Remember. But don't think you can just sit there--the energetic vibe of danceable tracks like Make It Happen and You're So Cold will positively drag you from your seat!

Mariah's more than just another pretty voice, of course. She's further developed her remarkably mature writing skills (check out The Wind and To Be Around You) and this time around, she's even co-produced the set...in tandem with groove wizards Robert Clivilles and David Cole (of C + C Music Factory fame).

Posted by Lynn on Monday, 30-Jun-2008, 12:54PM EDT
Mariah and Da Brat are included in the new Usmagazine.com's gallery of celebrities and their best friends forever. The gallery also features other celebrity duos like Christina Applegate and Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Garner and Reese Witherspoon, Liv Tyler and Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie and Gwen Stefani.

MARIAH CAREY & DA BRAT
Carey's April 30 nuptials to Nick Cannon were mostly attended by people "to do my hair and help me with the dress," she has said, but one of her pals who made the cut was longtime BFF Da Brat (who helped the singer write the lyrics to 1995 hit "Always Be My Baby)

Video: Part II - Mariah's Interview with Sunrise, Australia
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 28-Jun-2008, 7:22PM EDT

Here is Part 2 of Sunrise entertainment reporter James Tobin's interview with Mariah in Tokyo, Japan that aired on The Morning Show, Australia on Monday, June 9th.

Click here to download an Mpg file.

Excerpts from the Interview:
James Tobin: You always look amazing you may use a bit of fairly small outfits quite often, is this Mariah Carey saying, 'This is me, this is who I am, take it or leave it?'
Mariah Carey: I've always been that way though. I mean, there's pictures of me when I'm six years old on the beach laying there like emulating I don't know who I thought I was in the pose but I have this in actually my beach house, I have this picture from when I was literally six, I don't know it's just a very like over-the-top dramatic little girl in the bikini laying on the beach. They should have gotten a hint back then. It just so happens that I guess that's like my favorite little pose [laughs].

JT: Your mom is an opera singer, what did music mean to you back when you were 3 or 6 years old?
MC: Music has always meant like the opposite of bleakness.

JT: You told me about having fun and laughing at yourself. One of the greatest things I've seen for a while was your pitch at the baseball in Japan. The best thing about that was that you turned around afterwards and you laughed at the situation.
MC: I have to. How could you not? Everyone else did [laughs]. People should be happy that it went the right direction. When we were practicing, it actually went to the right at one point and I actually made a basket on the side with the baseball. Impressive now.

"It's exciting and it's fun and he's just one of the best people like the best person I've ever met. He's a very considerate kind of person but he's really funny too. That's his job, part of his job, you know, he's an actor and he's also a great comedian so it's like, we just have fun and joke around all the time. It's nice."

"He was filming it, filming the moment of giving me like this cute stuff like Hello Kitty candies and Tinker Bell, all things in pink and lavender to match the Empire State Building and then he had candy rings, I don't know if you have them, but they're like a big ring but it's candy. So he gave me this candy, I thought it was candy but really he put this ring inside of the candy. So I was just like, 'I think mine's broken' and then really it wasn't broken, it was the ring. And so I was like, 'Stop filming' and I just ran away 'cause I felt shy. It was a nice moment."

"I think that people notice, that they notice that I'm happy now. When I'm happy it's because I do have, I am in a really happy place in my personal life which I haven't ever been in before. This is a brand-new beginning and I think people, it's interesting because the album really matches where my life is at right now so it's a good thing."

Hong Kong singer Hins Cheung has always been a big fan of Mariah Carey. Hong Kong TV station TVB's entertainment news program "Entertainment Scoop" interviewed Mariah in Tokyo, Japan earlier and program host Albert Cheung gave Mariah a copy of Hins' am/pm CD with a personal message that says: "I love you forever." Mariah learned that he's a very talented artist in Hong Kong (Hins' first greatest hits My 1st Collection is the #1 selling CD for the first half of 2008 in Hong Kong). She said she will definitely listen to his album. She knew that Hins got tickets for her Hong Kong concert in 2006 but unfortunately it was cancelled. Hins was very disappointed so Mariah promised she will send him tickets when she tours Asia next year.

The pictures below show TVB host Albert giving a copy of Hins' am/pm CD to Mariah, Hins' am/pm and My 1st Collection CD covers, and Hins in late May announcing the winners to Universal Hong Kong's "Touch My Mimi" contest.

"Vision of Love" is Grating Karaoke Song
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 23-Jun-2008, 9:24AM EDT
EW.com did a feature on 10 Great (and 10 Grating) Karaoke Songs, and "Vision of Love" made the latter because of how hard it is to sing.

GRATING
"VISION OF LOVE"
Mariah Carey

Congratulations, you were first soprano in your school choir. You're the best karaoke singer in your group of friends, and you hum along to Mariah all the time on your iPod without missing a note. Okay, now sit down, we have some bad news: You cannot do this song. Seriously. Tackling this lung-crusher might seem like a fun challenge, but three minutes, five octaves, and one 10-second note later, you will realize that you did not conquer "Vision of Love." "Vision of Love" conquered you.

• "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" Mediabase airplay update as of week ending June 21, 2008: 2.003 million audience impressions with 108 spins (Pop - 15, Rhythmic - 47, Urban - 41, Urban A/C - 5). Request plays of both the original and the remix versions from your local radio stations now!

• Stevie Wonder mentions Mariah in an interview with The Boston Globe:

Q. Some of your biggest fans have become popular musicians. Is that always flattering?
A. To me it's an honor, and it's also a challenge, and so I'm influenced by the various people that are coming up as they say they are influenced by me. I like Alicia [Keys], I like Mariah [Carey], always taking chances doing different stuff. I think India[.Arie] is very talented. I'm a big John Mayer fan. I think [Justin Timberlake's] very talented, and it would be fun to work with him on stuff.

• Rumor Mill: Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reports that Mariah Carey has written a song called "100 percent," which she wants Barack Obama to use as his campaign theme song. Top tip: Word is Carey wrote it in hopes it would become a theme for the Olympics, but reconsidered once Barack became the presumed Dem presidential candidate. The song has yet to be recorded.

• From Newsday: Though her career is filled with classics - from "Lady Marmalade" to "New Attitude" - in recent years, Patti LaBelle hasn't had a big hit, despite releasing strong albums and working with hot producers. She wants to change that with a new solo album set for later this year that she hopes will include work with Mariah Carey and Ne-Yo, but she's not counting on it.

• Up-and-coming rapper Asher Roth mentions Mariah and Nick Cannon in "Cannon," a track from his new "The Greenhouse Effect Mixtape." Listen below. The full mixtape is available for free download at his MySpace.

You know the world's gone mad
When blacks wear plaid
And Mariah has married Nick Cannon
Or when a boy from the 'burbs
Has the nerves to converge
On a mixtape with DJ Cannon.

• Another Mariah mention: UK's new artist DJ Ironik to RWD Magazine:

If you could 'stay with' one person for one night, who would it be?
Mariah Carey, even though Nick Cannon took her. She's beautiful and her voice is just beautiful.

If you edited RWD, which five acts would you include?
Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse, Wiley, because he makes me laugh in his interviews, The Queen so I can talk to her and Usher.

• Earlier today, L.A.'s #1 hip-hop station, Power 106 held its annual Powerhouse concert. Inside the DUB magazine that they distributed to the crowd had articles for each of the station's DJs. When asked for their favorite Powerhouse memories, DJ Luscious Liz said: "My favorite Powerhouse memories are these surprise quests: T.I., Mariah, and Kanye West. It's so exciting when the crowd has no idea these Power artists are about to hit the stage!" and DJ Felli Fel replied: "When I brought Mariah Carey out on stage." Thanks to Cori for the pictures below.

• In the Philippines, the GMA News' Entertainment segment "Chika Minute" on June 17th showed a video clip from Mariah's interview with reporter Ricky Lo in Tokyo, Japan. You can check out the video here.

Smart Telecommunications has set up promo billboards for Mariah's E=MC² along EDSA Boulevard in Quezon City. Smart is running a contest for its subscribers to download Mariah's "Touch My Body" tones for a chance to win P500,000 or a Toyota Vios. See pictures below. Meanwhile, the posh department store chain, Rustan's, now has the "M by Mariah Carey" fragrance available exclusively in its stores. The pictures below show the "M" display counter in Rustan's at the EDSA Shangrila Mall. Thanks to Ronald for the pictures.

"Some people say, 'Okay, well you shouldn't sing these people's songs' or whatever because I have a lot of songs that are very high-key and it's not easy sometimes."

"The actual craft of singing and learning how to do different things with your voice, but that is something that I still work on. Like I still try to learn, try not to hurt my voice but I do experiment with like the top notes and the different sections of my voice."

"People help me do my hair and make-up and clothes and get it all together and... [laughs] Whatever is coming out of your spirit shines through and that's really what beauty is about more than anything."

"It's very exciting, very exciting to have the album be so successful already. I put a lot of myself into this record."

In "The Classics: Music" category, Mariah's tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, is listed at #21 on the Top 100 Best Albums of the past 25 years.

21 The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey (2005)
Her triumphant post-Glitter comeback offered a chart-busting brigade of feather-light, Crisco-slick ballads like "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off."

Prince's 1984 album Purple Rain takes the top spot on the list; followed by Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998), and U2's Achtung Baby (1991) at #2 and #3, respectively. For the full list, click here.

In EW.com Poll results on page 82: Readers' choice of their favorite singer of the past 25 years, Mariah is #1 with 27% of the total votes. Madonna comes in at #2 with 25%, followed by Whitney Houston 19%, Bono 18%, and Michael Jackson with 11%.

Excerpts from the Interview
Priya Krishnamoorthy: If your music and videos are colourful then so is your life. Recently in a surprise wedding you married 27-year-old actor Nick Cannon within weeks of meeting him. This is something I came across and I quote you, "I don't think I have ever experienced a relationship of the calibre I write about in my love songs." Do you feel differently now?
Mariah Carey: Completely different. Yes. And it's interesting because I have had this conversation with my husband also. Everything has heightened because you really are in love now. Everything has suddenly changed. I feel I had written about those things because I had connected with people like that. I had romanticised about other relationships but they were never what my relationship is now. People wrote to me saying I am an eternal optimist but unrealistic for believing in one person who I am destined to be with. When it actually did happen to me, it was an amazing thing because it answered all my prayers. Lot of people don't believe in all this, but I do.

PK: It is this ability to touch people's heart with your music that got you onto the pages of Time magazine. In 2008, you have been voted as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
MC: I didn't even understand. I thought it was just entertainment. I had no idea of the enormity of the situation or what it meant. So when I found out, I was like 'are you serious?'

PK: The icing on the cake came as praise from musician Stevie Wonder.
MC: Stevie Wonder is my ultimate favourite artist. We share a very close relationship because he knows how inspirational he has been to me. So to see what he wrote about me, I had to just call him and thank him for everything. His words were the highest points in my career.

PK: When are you planning to come to India?
MC: I want to go everywhere and I really want to come to India. Please let my fans in India know how grateful I am for their support.

"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" Remix Review

T.I. Buys Mariah Expensive Luggage

Mariah Carey feat. T.I.
"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" (Remix)

By Ryan Dombal, Rating:

A couple months ago, we named "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" (IBLULT) the best track on MC's recent E=MC² album and while this new remix doesn't necessarily make it that much better, we'll never complain about a breezy T.I. verse. The rapper is in "My Love" guest shot mode here, offering his lady expensive gifts (though we're pretty sure Mariah can buy her own Louis Vuitton). Still, the beat -- produced by T.I. buddy DJ Toomp-- is the star: perfect for your top-down beach drives and/or the soundtrack to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Mariah is in a pure pop mood, keeping her trademark vocal runs in check while sticking close to the melody. A late, great entry into the Song of the Summer Sweepstakes.

The official site has yet to announce if this remix will be available for download on iTunes. In the meantime, please request at radio. You can use our request lines page to find your local stations.

Below, find Akon and Lil Wayne's added verses, and a 15-sec audio clip.

Akon:
I know, I know you're gone
I know I'll see you again
One thing that I can promise
We gon' meet up again
Hopefully up in heaven
Prayin' that I'm forgiven
For everything that I've done
And that I forgot to mention.

It feels so bad to be
Without my homie
And ever since you've been absent
I've been so lonely
Why this life must cycle around
Like a trophy
Even though somebody
Took the time to warn me.

That you can be with me
And it's just crazy
And everyday I'm wishing
That you come save me
And I know a man
Ain't supposed to cry
It's taken all the strength
In my soul to say goodbye.

Lil Wayne:
How come they call it goodbye?
How come the good die?
See I just get high
And think of the good times
That I had with my pop
He was a good guy
How come the good die?

As I protect my mother
'Cause I'm her oldest son
And there are different worlds
And we in the coldest one
Which one did granny go to?
And why do death come?
As my baby asks
Where do babies come from

I tell her where
I tell her why
I tell her I love her
Until I tell her bye
And whenever I
Shall ever die
I hope you celebrate it
I hope you never hate it

And they say heaven's gated
But I think I know the code
And let's get your life right
By the end of the road
That's why I drive alone
Down memory lane
So if I crash
I hope ya'll remember Wayne.

Mariah Given a Royal Celebration in the Philippines
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 16-Jun-2008, 4:40PM EDT
Mariah Carey is already happily married to actor and rapper Nick Cannon, but wedding vows and golden rings have certainly not hampered this talented diva from still conquering the music scene.

Having been touted recently as the only artist ever to beat Elvis Presley in having the most number of chart-topping hits worldwide, Mariah Carey was hailed and honored last June 13 in Eastwood City, Libis. This victory party celebrated the smashing success of her newest album, E=MC2. This 14-track album hit gold in the Philippines just eight days after its release, with its carrier single "Touch My Body" effortlessly ruling the airwaves.

"Touch My Body" is Mariah's 18th chart-topper since her musical debut in 1990. The success of this song also catapulted the 38-year-old siren to the Number 2 spotlight in the Billboard records--next only to The Beatles, who had 20 worldwide hits, making them cling on firmly to the top spot. The King of Rock 'n Roll, Elvis Presley, had 17 hits in the Billboard charts.

ROYAL CELEBRATION. The posh victory party was spearheaded by MCA Music Inc., allowing MCA Music artists perform covers of songs popularized by the sultry diva.

Richard Poon ("My All"), Dianne Elise ("Bye Bye"), Chicosci ("Breakdown"), Miguel Escueta ("We Belong Together"), Pedicab ("Heartbreaker") and Zoo ("Always Be My Baby") all had explosive performances that were warmly welcomed by Mariah's avid supporters seated in the audience. Collectively called Mimi Lambs, these fans hooted and shouted as the singers rendered their own cover of a Mariah song plus a song from their own repertoire.

The event set-up in Libis was quite elaborate, with black, purple, and pink balloons lining not only the stage, but also the mini-runway that cut across it. The catwalk was used primarily by models garbed in exquisite timepieces for the fashion show held during the event. In line with the posh arrangements that pervaded the venue, a huge LCD screen was propped in the center and repeatedly played Mariah's music video of her smash hit "Touch My Body."

The event was hosted by Magic 89.9 disc jockeys Sam YG and Suzie, as well as MTV VJ and Bb. Pilipinas World title-holder Maggie Wilson.

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN. Aside from the recent release of the Mariah VIP Card, which entitles the owner to several discount privileges in select establishments nationwide, the soulful siren also released a classy signature scent to match her sparkling personality.

With her own perfume line soon to be available in the market, Mariah joins the ranks of Latina beauty Jennifer Lopez, pop princess Christina Aguilera, and hip-hop maven Gwen Stefani in having a signature fragrance that mimics her vivacious outlook in life.

Labeled M by Mariah Carey, Mariah's newest perfume collection aims to embody her beauty, femininity, and glamour--traits that have always been associated with the singer throughout her eighteen-year career in the music industry.

MARIAH IN THE PHILIPPINES? At the event, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) took the opportunity to ask a representative from MCA Music Inc. if a concert of the Queen herself could possibly visit the Philippines in the future.

"It really depends on her schedule," replied label executive Katherine Choy. "Actually she was in Japan last time and we brought some friends from the media to be with her there," she recalled. "It's really not impossible. If we find someone who's really interested [to bring her here], then, why not?" she said with a smile.

From the June 23rd issue of In Touch magazine.

Nick Works Hard to Please Mariah
Being married to a diva can't always be easy, but Nick Cannon is doing a good job keeping Mariah Carey happy. While the multi-platinum artist, 39, was hard at work shooting her next music video in Oahu, Hawaii, on June 8, Nick kept busy as well. "He got off the plane and went straight to Macy's in the Waikiki Kahala Mall, looking for his new line of PNB hoodies. He also picked up some treats at See's Candies for Mariah," an insider tells In Touch.

Several purchases later, the 27-year-old actor/rapper stopped by Tiffany & Co., where "he spent time choosing a gift for Mariah and put it in a regular paper bag so he could surprise her," says an onlooker. Nick's day ended with a dance party at Mariah's estate. "He arrived at sunset, just in time for the hula dancers' performance, arranged by Mariah," the insider says. Maybe she should dedicate her video, "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time," to her doting new husband.

Mariah's Interview with The Philipine Star
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 14-Jun-2008, 7:03PM EDT
On the couch with Mariah Carey
by Ricky Lo

Our "first time" happened in bed. I mean, my first interview with Mariah Carey, nicknamed Mimi, way back in 1999 when she was in Hong Kong to promote her album, Rainbow. Mariah was tired after several rounds of interviews with more than two dozen journalists from around Asia and, toward early evening, she requested that we do the interview in her hotel room, with us six journalists seated around her bed where Mariah reclined like a modern-day Cleopatra.

Two weeks ago, we did it again. I mean, have another interview, this time with Mariah reclining on a couch, as friendly and as down-to-earth and as accommodating as ever, even violating a "no-photographs" rule and agreeing to pose for picture with me after I gave her a copy of my first Conversation titled In bed with Mariah Carey. It happened at a suite of The Peninsula in Tokyo where Mariah was promoting her new album, E=MC2.

Her face spelled H-A-P-P-I-N-E-S-S. Very obviously, she has made it "through the rain," to quote the now-classic song titled Make It Through the Rain which she recorded during a slump in her life and career a few years ago. A song that has become a favorite piece among aspirants in singing contests.

But, of course, the fact that she's on honeymoon mode explained the glow around Mariah. Last April 30, she surprised the world by getting married to singer-actor Nick Cannon at a sunset ceremony near the ocean in the Bahamas where Mariah owns an estate. They reportedly met in 2005 but started dating only last March.

The proposal was straight out of a romantic movie.

Here's how People magazine described it:
On April 25, Cannon took Carey to the roof of her New York City apartment to see the Empire State Building, lit pink and lavender to honor her album E=MC2. As he often did, he gave her a Ring Pop candy shaped like a big jewel. But inside the wrapper was a 17-carat pink-diamond ring created by Jacob & Co.'s Jacob Arabo. Her reaction? "He has ribbons around it, so I said, 'I think mine's broken'," says Mariah. When he dropped to one knee, "she ran away and got all shy," he says. Finally, she said yes - twice. Cannon, who filmed it all, proposed again to get a perfect take, this time on a helicopter. "That," says Carey, "was beautiful."

Congratulations, Mariah! E=MC2 turned gold upon its release in the Philippines. (The album/CD is released in the Philippines by MCA Music Inc.)
"Oh, thank you!"

You were in the Philippines a few years ago. How did you find it?
"Oh, I had an amazing time in the Philippines and I'd love to go back. The crowd at the concert was fun; it was a really, really festive crowd. After the show, I had a chance to go to the beach and that was really beautiful; one of the most beautiful beaches that I've seen in my whole life... and I've been to several of them. I want to thank my fans in the Philippines for their love and support. Please extend my love to all my fans in the Philippines."

Why did you call it E=MC2?
"Well, there's a lot of reasons but, you know, it's just fun and having a good time, and 'MC' is my nickname... and, you know, there's a lot of different reasons. I like people to interpret it in their own way."

How did the album come to be?
"Well, it's just some sort of a combination of different moments, really. It begins with a song called Migrate which has a 'dark' kind of a feel; I just love its beat. Everything happens for a reason and E=MC2 is really one album that represents my life right now. It's some kind of a soundtrack of my life."

Of course, "E" in the album's title stands for Emancipation (which happens to be in the title of your immediate past album, also a hit), doesn't it?
"Well, I say that sometimes when, you know... As I've said, other people have a different interpretation of the word 'E.' But really, I think it is sort of like a dose of who I am. You know what I mean - as a person and as an artist. And so, that's what it is. It's kind of like about me."

"Emancipated" from what?
"Well, from a lot of things. I mean, I think that as we grow old and we learn more about ourselves, we become a little bit more free. It's difficult to be free if you don't really know where you come from, or if you are not in touch with your feelings. It has taken me a long time to get to that place because, uh, you know, I have gone through rough roads along the way. They've been amazing times, though. Freedom and emancipation and all those good things are really important to me."

You are such a beautiful survivor.
"Oh, thank you!"

To everybody, most especially your fans, you will forever be the diva.
"Oh, I'm very grateful for that. I believe that I owe it to the fact that I'm a person who has a lot of spirituality. I believe in God very strongly but I'm not necessarily a religious person. I have devoted and dedicated fans; I really care about them. Some people that I've met, you know, they see their fans and say, 'Oh, 'em people are crazy!' Some people have told me that."

So you are in touch with your fans.
"Oh yes, I am. When I do a concert, I go down the stage even if my partner would tell me, 'MC, don't go down there!' Look, I like being part of the crowd, I like the feeling. It's something different. I know others seldom do that, but I do. I love it when my fans show me clippings of articles about me or books and magazines about me. Getting personal with them is a wonderful experience."

You have gone through so many things. How did you do it? Where do you draw your strength from?
"I definitely draw my strength from my personal relationship with God. I've been able to pray my way through tough times and things like that. You know, I think that's important for people to know that everything is possible. You know, no matter what kind of mess you are going through, there's always something bright around the corner. There's always something beautiful."

What inspires you to write songs? Do you write better when you are happy or when you are sad?
"You know, I've written some songs when I was really, really sad; and then again, I've written successful songs when I was really, really happy. Some songs I wrote while I was going through difficult times. I wrote some songs that discuss issues that were difficult but that turned out to be something that healed me."

So, music can be a form of therapy as it is with many artists.
"Yes, it can be. I do think that music is very therapeutic not just for me, you know, but also for people who listen to it. A song can put lonely people in a good mood, you know."

Would you say that you are happy now more than ever?
Yes, I can say that. This is a very happy time for me. Nothing is ever perfect... there's always something that you have to deal with. You know, things about you that people don't necessarily understand, like artists like me are doing what they do for a living. It's not as if every day is a holiday. I love music and being creative."

You look as smashing as ever. As I've said, you are such a beautiful survivor. How do you keep in shape?
"It's just diet and exercise. Boring!"

As an equation for surviving, what's the magic "formula" behind E=MC2?
"Well, to me it's all about never losing faith in yourself... always believing in yourself. People ask me all the time, 'Oh, how could you go on? People were writing you off and treating you like...' whatever it is... 'You would never gonna succeed again!' You know what, people looked at me like that before I became famous. So I can't even entertain what other people think. It's about me continuing to make music or whatever the project is. You know, people told me that I could never act again and I was fortunate to make two films which are coming out this year. It's all about faith, about God and never ever giving up."

Obviously, stardom hasn't changed the basic goodness in you.
"I still look at myself as the same girl as I was before I joined showbiz. I still remember being a little kid. I often tell myself, 'Don't ever forget what it feels like to be a kid.' You see, adults misunderstand kids so much that they forget what it is like to be a kid. I still remember when I was struggling and I had only one pair of shoes. The friend I had at that time is the same friend I have today. She and I would sleep together on a mattress on the floor of our Manhattan pad. She used to help me get waitressing jobs. But I was so bad... I was 17 and I was too young to be serving food. I also got fired because I was listening to my Walkman all the time, to my demo tapes. I was a complete mess in that regard."

How was your childhood like?
"I grew up in New York... without my mother. She was a former opera singer with the New York Opera and a vocal coach. She was the dominant force in my life because I didn't have my father (an African-Venezuelan; her mom, Irish) around. I saw my father every now and then but it was my mother who raised me. She allowed me to develop my personality from a very young age. She introduced me to all those artistic people. She was a strong-willed woman; she married my father against wishes of her family. That was in the '60s when marrying a black man was a no-no. She eventually separated from my father and married a white man."

What about your school life?
"I had fun in school but I also had this feeling that I was different, that I was a mixed-race kid. I was insecure about my looks. It took me a while to get over this feeling. There's a line from one of my songs that says, 'I've learned there's an inner peace I own, something of my soul that they cannot possess. I won't be afraid of darkness because there's a light in me that will shine brightly...' and another line from another song, 'They can try but they can't take that away from me.' Meaning, no matter what anybody says, if you have that power within yourself you get through it. And that's what got me through everything in life because I had a kind of screwed-up childhood."

During our first interview almost a decade ago, I asked you to describe yourself in three words...
"...what did I say?"

You said you were "workaholic, insecure and optimistic."
"Oh, did I say that?" (Laughs).

Audio: Mariah Interviews with UK's BBC Radio 1Xtra
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 14-Jun-2008, 2:36AM EDT

On Sunday, June 8th, Mariah called in from Hawaii to talk about her new album E=MC², her secret wedding to Nick Cannon, and more with DJ Ronnie Herel on BBC Radio 1Xtra in London, UK.

Listen to the interview to the right. Click here to download an MP3 file.

Below are some quotes from the interview.

Talking about E=MC²
"I hope people will get the album and really listen to it 'cause it's definitely, definitely like, I don't know, I mean, Jermaine [Dupri] and I who really collaborated on the Mimi album, he feels this is a better album and I think that's a pretty big deal 'cause he says he basically never, he usually speaks the truth. He's a pretty blunt guy."

"I feel like God has definitely blessed me with an album that I'm really proud of and I'm really grateful for, and really grateful for just all the success and the exciting things that have gone on like the Time magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People in the World. That was a dream, not even a dream-come-true. I never imagined that would happen and Stevie Wonder just wrote an amazing write-up about me. Stevie Wonder's my favorite. I've always been a huge fan of his so to see him write something that was so incredibly flattering about me as an artist and then as a human being, that was like, I think, that's probably the best thing that's happened to me in my career."

Discussing Recent Wedding
"I really feel like I've been talking about it because I'm excited about it and I think we're both really happy at this point in time in a different way than maybe than people can understand but the point is if we would have just been like, 'okay, it's a big engagement and let's have a big Hollywood hoopla and bla-bla-bla,' I think people would have, I don't know how people would have responded. It doesn't really matter. We wanted to get married and that was our private moment and it was very, very small, just a very, very intimate group of people. There was not a huge ordeal, Hollywood moment it was not that at all. After the fact that we wanted people to see pictures, we had pictures that we could give you know that's fine but it's like this is just something that happens once in a lifetime, in terms of this type of a feeling so I don't think that it would have been about inviting a bunch of people that you really don't know that well just to make a big hoopla about it. It wasn't about celebrity or not celebrity. It was about people who could appreciate the fact that we love each other and that's something we wanted to do."

Dispelling 'Second Big Wedding' Rumor
"I don't know where that came from. No, here's the thing like, it's so bizarre, there's always one like this weird rumor that we were gonna spend $4 million on a wedding, I'm like, 'why?' Why would anybody set out to spend $4 million on a wedding? We got married privately, you know, like secretly kind of basically. And then of course, you know, we were getting married on a beach and I got there a little late and so we almost didn't have any sunlight left for the pictures and it was like, it was what it was but no we're not doing that. What we said was we would probably do, and this is actually the next idea that we're maybe just, you know, have a different type of party to celebrate every year like I'm getting married every year thing."

Fan Recap: The Philippines' E=MC² Victory Party
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 14-Jun-2008, 2:18AM EDT
Mandy gives us a recap of what went down at last night's MCA Music-sponsored Victory Party for Mariah's E=MC² held at Eastwood Central Plaza Libis in Quezon City, Philippines.

"The night at Libis was pretty humid while the big crowd was already getting the momentum of Mariah's music infused in the evening air. It was way past 8pm and the night was starting to light up. Fans who enlisted and purchased the first April release of the deluxe edition got the most wanted VIP card to get a red carpet treatment and refreshments. The party came as a surprise too as 'M by Mariah Carey' was literally all over the place. Mariah's perfume was not initially available here after its release and hardcore fans like us had to get our own supply from the USA. It was also cool to know that it is now available at Rustan's, an upscale department store.

Richard Poon performs "My All"
The party was peppered too with tons of prizes of 'M' perfumes and items from sponsors. Five fans also competed to sing like Mariah and went away with perfumes as prizes. The winner got an additional 'M' purple t-shirt. People got touched a lot with dancers and models strutting in a fashion show. Rock bands, upcoming singers and a famous crooner got their own interpretation of an MC song of their choice. David Cook's 'Always Be My Baby' cover hit got replicated by Zoo. Miguel Escueta, pulled a brilliant rock version of 'We Belong Together.' Dianne Elise confessed to have her first performance as an artist of MCA Music and offered a stunning version of 'Bye Bye.' Chicosci, a hard rock band performed 'Breakdown' with a guest rapper and playfully slipped in 'Hero' through their rock song. Pedicab, a rather monotone-eccentric boy band, ran off with 'Heartbreaker.' The show-stopper belonged to the famous balladeer Richard Poon whose range of contemporary hits was superbly interpreted his way. 'My All' may not seem to be a nice pick for a male singer but Richard suavely grooved his voice to this 1998 Mariah hit.

For the night's special surprise, a Mariah autographed The Emancipation of Mimi CD got raffled off and my friend and birthday boy, Mark, clutched the night's ultimate prize. I was a little despondent and bitter that I did not win it but that's okay. I'll just hunt Mariah the next time she comes to Manila.

And to end this festive night, our appreciations to MCA for pulling a festive show like this."

Mariah Hopes to Hit High Notes With New Scent
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 13-Jun-2008, 2:05PM EDT

Mariah Carey's Luscious Pink
For her second fragrance, Mariah Carey wants her consumers to think pink.

Luscious Pink, Carey's second scent with Elizabeth Arden, is intended to show fans a more intimate look into her world.

"This scent is feminine, flirtatious and fun, and truly reflects where I am in my life now, after an incredible year," Carey said earlier this week. To be sure, it's been a whirlwind several months for the singer -- with events including her May marriage to 11-year-younger rapper-actor Nick Cannon and a new album, "E=MC2."

"Elizabeth Arden has been a fantastic partner and the end creation of Luscious Pink is beyond my expectations," continued Carey. "The response from my fans with my debut scent was overwhelming, and I can't wait to see what happens with my second Luscious fragrance."

And Arden feels the same, said Ron Rolleston, executive vice president of global fragrance marketing. "Mariah has been an amazing partner," he said. "She's been engrossed in the fragrance process and marketing from beginning to end. Everywhere she's been, she has shared her first fragrance with her audience. She's done record-setting personal appearances for us. She's been our best ambassador."

Concocted by Carlos Benaim and Loc Dong of International Flavors & Fragrances, Luscious Pink, a sparkling floral, has top notes of Sicilian bergamot, Ocean Breeze accord and sparkling Bellini accord; a heart of Tahitian Tiare petals, lily of the valley and pink peony, and a drydown of bright blond woods, creamy sandalwood and white musk, which the perfumers describe as "a floral melody that is as enveloping as Mariah's voice."

"No one can hit notes any higher than Mariah, and we wanted to use that to inspire us in the creation of the fragrance," added Rolleston.

Luscious Pink's bottle, created by Jean Antretter, senior design director for Arden, is a pink-tinged pearlescent orb topped with Carey's signature butterfly. The outer package is matte pink with the name in metallic pink calligraphy.

The collection includes eaux de parfum sprays in three sizes -- 1 oz. for $39.50, 1.7 oz. for $55 and 3.3 oz. for $65 -- as well as a 6.8-oz. body lotion for $28.

The scent lineup, like Carey's first scent, M, will be sold in about 2,000 U.S. department stores. It will be launched in August. Luscious Pink also will be sold in Japan, and that market's olfactory preferences were kept firmly in mind during the creation process because Carey has "a large consumer base there," said Noreen Dodge, vice president of global fragrance marketing for Elizabeth Arden.

National advertising, shot by Michael Thompson and featuring Carey, breaks in September fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazines, including Cosmopolitan and Glamour. "The campaign has this wonderful ethereal quality which works very well with the concept of the fragrance -- the iridescence from the bottle is carried into the ad," added Rolleston.

More than 15 million scented impressions are targeted, said Dodge, who added that a comprehensive Internet campaign also is planned. "Mariah has a huge fan base and we will reach out directly to them," she said. Point of purchase sampling is scheduled, as well.

While executives declined to discuss sales figures or advertising spending, industry sources estimated that Luscious Pink would do upward of $15 million at retail in its first year on counter. At least $7.5 million is expected to be spent on advertising and sales promotion in the same time frame.

Excerpts from the Interview
"I like to just record in different places so I went to Capri for a minute, I worked in Florida and I just sing in a place that's good for my voice and so I would just be in a studio singing like I would never go out like, basically, in pajamas singing and just not worry about how I look or whatever else is going on. It's just about having a good time and I did also get a new doggy during the process and his name is JJ. I would say, honestly, the funniest thing was JJ was hitting really, really high notes. He just happens to like when he yawns he hits high notes so I think I might have the only really like high-note-singing dog in the world and we discovered this while making this album."

"I think it would be easier to, I mean I only know a few phrases in Japanese, it's not like I'm fluent or even know more than five things to say but I think that I would love to sing something in Japanese. I'm pretty good with like phonetically hearing something and being able to kind of repeat it depending on how much sleep I've had or whatever. Maybe it is my second best language 'cause I've been to Japan a lot of times now but yeah, I think that's a really interesting idea. I would love to do that."

"I would just say to my Japanese fans thank you so much for being here for me over the years. I have a very, very special place in my heart for everybody that has been so loyal to me from Japan so, you know, all over the world but there's something very special about my relationship with my Japanese fans so I have to say Arigato and Aishitemasu. [Thank you and I love you]."

Rumor Mill: Love Registers with Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 11-Jun-2008, 10:06AM EDT
Mariah Carey's friends and colleagues weren't invited to her impromptu wedding to Nick Cannon, but they can still send a gift. According to an insider, "Mariah's assistant, Gina, sent out over 100 e-mails to her wealthy friends letting them know that she's registered at Bergdorf Goodman if they want to buy her a present. It's odd because she's not even having a big wedding party or anything. It was assumed they'd have a big celebration when they got back, but no. They just want the gifts." On the list are "fine china, very expensive silver stemware" and other items. Carey's rep declined to comment.

Message to Chompoo
"Hi, I'm Mariah Carey. I just wanted to say to Chompoo I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I hope everything's okay and all my heart goes out to you and [I'm] sure everything's gonna be fine and I look forward to seeing you the next time I'm in Thailand."

Excerpts from the Interview
You just got married! Could you tell me how you met your husband Nick Cannon?
"We actually met in 2005 at the Teen Choice Awards. He gave me an award... And we did two videos that day and just didn't finish up the second one which was really what I wanted before, which was, it was a song called 'Love Story' and it's been really sort of become like a thing. So it's nice."

There are a lot of paparazzi. Are you scared of them? What do you think of them? You're so famous."
"I think because of the way that everything's just instant-cash, the media is so quick you know, people are so involved in ripping celebrities to shreds. It's a difficult state of being but for me it's like you take the good with the bad. You have to deal with it. But it is all part of what we do for a living so it's kind of like you asked for it, you got it, here it is and just deal with it. And so all you can hope for you know would be a great supportive group of people around you that will be there and understand on how to get through those moments. That's always what I look for in people. I can always find it but when I do, I really appreciate it."

Could you tell me the secret of your success?
"I feel that everything's possible when you really believe and you really pray and you really put God first and stay focused on what you're doing and don't let anybody steal your joy."

Can you speak about Thailand and say hi to all Thai fans please?
"I did enjoy Thailand and I really love to go back. I'd like to say hello and thank you to all my Thai fans and let you know that I hope to see you soon."

"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" Video Shoot
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 11-Jun-2008, 1:50AM EDT
A day-by-day account of the filming of Mariah's music video to her new single, "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" in Hawaii by Tim Ryan.

Sunday, June 8
Mariah Carey had a busy day. After keeping her production crew waiting some four hours Sunday she finally arrived in Portlock from the Paul Mitchell Estate in Lanikai to shoot a portion of her music video at the cliffside home of Rob Burns who founded the surf company Local Motion. Problem is Carey had a personal trailer waiting for her at the elementary school in Koko Head where she was to have her hair, makeup and costuming done. The diva's makeup and costumes had to be driven to the cliffside location where she was made up. Filming was completed around sunset and Carey was whisked back to Lanikai where she partied with friends until around 11 p.m. She then was driven to Hawaiian Adventures Water Park for more filming. That shoot lasted to 5 a.m.

Today's filming is also at night but at Sea Life Park. If the video is not completed today Carey and accompany will return to SLP tomorrow. Husband Nick Cannon, who arrived Saturday evening, stopped by Tiffany's in Waikiki in a limousine and with a bodyguard on his way to Lanikai to buy his bride some jewelry. Notable security company Private Security owned by Charlie Long has had three guards protecting Carey and company during the shoot. The couple have settled into the Kahala Resort for a few days.

Tuesday, June 10
Mariah Carey pulled another all nighter last night at Sea Life Park where she filmed the remainder of her music video until about 4 a.m. The diva arrived just before 5 p.m. in a white gown. Park security made a sweep of the grounds to make sure visitors were out of the park at the 5 p.m. closing time. Despite the security someone caught most of the filming on a hand held HD camera. Part of the video has Carey on the small island in the dolphin pool. Now that the filming is over Carey and her husband Nick Cannon are enjoying a brief honeymoon at the Kahala Resort.

"Side Effects," LA Times' 7th Romantic Bust-Up Song
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 10-Jun-2008, 12:05AM EDT
For most people, romantic flame-outs inspire sobbing midnight phone calls, sleepless nights and lots of excess drinking. For pop stars, that bad boyfriend or cheating girlfriend can be the road to contstant radio airplay.

These performers have all used their tabloid-worthy exploits as inspiration for something more hummable than humbling.

Mariah Carey

Song: "Side Effects"

Bust-up: Mariah Carey's breakup song is rumored to be about ex-husband Tommy Mottola.

What happened: Carey married music mogul Mottola in 1993. After the couple split, Carey told Parade that Mottola had been unable to handle her success. "I was treated almost like a prisoner. Everybody around me was deathly afraid of him. I became so scared. I was like an obsession and a possession."

Telling lyric: Do my best to handle sleeping with the enemy / Whether he was smothering every last part of me / So I broke away and finally found the strength to leave

Mariah to the Second Power
[ Stream or Download ]

We all know what pop diva Mariah Carey's first power is: her five-octave vocal range that could raise the ceiling.

But, what about her second power?

The vocal powerhouse's eleventh and latest studio album 'E=MC2', was titled with a play on Einstein's famous mass-energy equivalence formula. The full title of the album expands to 'Emancipation equals Mariah Carey to the second power'.

And we're making a not-so-wild guess here, but her second 'power' could just refer to her songwriting.

Not unlike previous albums, the 38-year-old songstress has written or co-written all the songs on her album, and the lyrics might just be powerful and heartfelt enough to trigger tears.

"The album has a lot of ballads and a lot of very personal songs," Mariah told Channel NewsAsia when she was in Japan recently for the MTV Video Music Awards.

Perhaps the most personal song would be her second single 'Bye Bye', which she wrote after her father passed away from cancer. But the singer also said that the song is universal and is extended to anyone who has lost a loved one.

"A lot of lines in that song are completely personal in terms of my father... I lost my father to cancer" she said.

"A lot of my friends have lost people who were very close to them in their lives and they have been with me so in a way I also wrote it for my friends, I wrote it for myself, and I wrote it for whoever who gets the album, listens to the song, gets the message, and needs it.

"The lyrics go 'Everyday life goes on, I wish I could talk to you for a while, I wish I could try to find a way not to cry...' So it's like my regular life is still going on and that's where we keep our act together and make it okay.

"There are still happy times but there are moments when you reflect on losing people or people you miss and you have to deal with that."

Apart from lost love, Mariah also wrote about new found love. The songbird and her actor beau Nick Cannon were recently married in the Bahamas, and she said tracks on the album reflect their love although they were written before the couple got together.

"I didn't write this album when we were together but it seems like that now so I feel like everything falls into place for a reason," Mariah explained.

"There are just some things that are meant to be and I believe in that. I think people have always felt that it's an unrealistic goal to meet someone and really have a true connection with him, but its not. Anything is possible if you believe in it and you really, really have faith.

"This is how my life has always been, whether it's good times or bad times, things happen for a reason and you get through them in order to get to better places. And that's my philosophy about life."

And the diva is back at the top of the charts, where she belongs. 'E=MC2' debuted at first place on the Billboard 200, with more than 463, 000 copies sold and making it the biggest opening week sales in her career.

The album stayed at at the top spot for two consecutive weeks and first single 'Touch My Body' reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

"The album is very personal... so to incorporate my name into the title in that way was kind of a wink and a smile," said the singer. "This album is a lot of fun... MC is my nickname so it's kind of like Mariah Carey to the second power. Just jokes, but we might as well have a good time with (the album)."

Jinny Chang, FTV: How far down the road are you really towards making the kind of music you want?
Mariah Carey: It's kind of like the second part of my life in a way. I don't mean that in terms of years or anything like that. I mean that in terms of my outlook on life and where I'm at just spiritually, emotionally. And just in terms of having fun and allowing that to show in music. There are songs in the album like 'Bye Bye' that you know I feel like even if you're not a fan of mine and you've gone through something you've lost, a family member or a loved one, either they passed away or they're just not in life anymore, songs like that can help you cope.

FTV: Someone like yourself who's been there and done it all in the music industry, what do you think is the prize of fame?
MC: Basically, take pride, rip it up and fill in the trash. Anybody that's in the public eye you lose a certain level of yourself to the outside world.

Who would you wait seven hours in a queue to see? For many music fans, the answer would be Mariah Carey.

And like it is for those fans, her performance for our James Tobin was worth the wait.

James Tobin flew to Tokyo, Japan, last week to interview Mariah Carey - pretty much the dream of any entertainment reporter and one that put James in a tizz. He was so enamored he arranged some designer stilettos shoes and a brilliant diamond butterfly brooch as his wedding gift.

(While she was flattered, Mariah knows her jewellery. Mariah's own wedding ring bling features a 10 carat centrepiece and is worth $2.5million.)

His whirlwind adventure - including the seven hour wait in a hotel hallway - still doesn't compare to Mariah's recent marriage to comedian Nick Cannon. That one has everyone stumped. So James gets in a few questions about this spontaneous event, held recently on a beach at sunset. Nick got into the spirit by having the name 'Mariah' tattooed across his back.

The two had been dating just for one intense fortnight.

Monday on Sunrise we will reveal part 1 of her first Australian interview since she got married.

Then watch The Morning Show immediately afterwards to see part two of the interview.

Mariah is much maligned by critics but her sales show her popularity is equal to, let's say... bread!

She has more #1 hits than Elvis Presley and her new album, 'E=MC2', (in stores now) has sold faster than any of her previous albums.

This is why she can afford to keep our James, and a hallway full of journalists, waiting longer than any other star.

Watch Monday, June 9th to catch the spectacle.

If you spot the brooch!
Sunrise had one 18ct white gold diamond set butterfly brooch and pendant created by Musson Jewellers in Sydney, Australia.

It is a true to life shape with black rhodium plating on the outer wings and features a total of 114 round brilliant cut white diamonds = 1.20 carats.

(Total size of diamonds on Mariah's actual wedding ring: 17 carats.)

Will she keep it and wear it? That is the big question.

We are now on the lookout for anyone who spies Mariah wearing the Sunrise butterfly brooch in public! So if you see it in a magazine, on TV or at a concert, email us in the soapbox to tell us where and when you spotted it!

Mariah Carey: I'm just at a place where I feel like I can say things in a song or name a song 'cause it's so tough in this position to know who you can trust and the fact of the matter is really you can't trust anybody for the most part. And that's sad but that, on a lighter note, how would Rachel or Mary Ann or one of my other really close friends describe me? I guess, they would definitely say that I'm festive, that would be the number one thing and that's one word I didn't use when making this record 'cause there's so many of my little inside jokes.

Jinny Chang, FTV: How did you feel when you decided to tie the knot with Mr. Cannon?
MC: It sounds weird because when you get married the thing is like you lose your freedom. We kind of created...

FTV: We heard.
MC: So they say and it has happened... but this is almost like creating a new level of freedom because you feel free to be who you are.

Learning Chinese
Albert Cheung, TVB: It would be cool if you can speak some Chinese for us.
Mariah Carey: Okay, do you want to teach me something to say?
TVB: What about 'How are you?'
MC: Okay.
TVB: 'How are you' would be 'Dai ga ho?'
MC: Dai ga ho?
TVB: That's very good. Ngo hai Mariah Carey.
MC: Ngo with the N first?
TVB: Ngo-hai-Mariah Carey.
MC: Ngo hai Mariah Carey.
TVB: That's so sweet.
MC: And then you just say, Dai ga ho?
TVB: Right. That's perfect.
MC: How do you say, 'Thank you'?
TVB: Dor tse.
MC: Dor tse.
TVB: That's right. Am I a good teacher?
MC: You are a really good teacher.

Mariah's "Olympic" Song
TVB: This year is the Olympics year and China's gonna host the Olympics and this is one of the mascots.
MC: Wow! I wrote a song that I thought would be really beautiful for the Olympics and I wondered if they ever, anyone ever wanted to talk about it I would love to come and sing it here.

On Nick Cannon
TVB: Just being nosy, [Nick] is beyond romantic. How was the proposal?
MC: Yes. But we knew we were gonna get married anyway. Like, we got tattoos. Nobody knew about this. All my friends' boyfriends were like, 'Tell him to stop, he's making us look bad.' He really is a great person. He's a really, really fantastic person.

Message to Sichuan Earthquake Victims
Mariah: My heart obviously goes out to all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy and really the families, and every one who suffered the loss and I just, you're in my prayers and I hope, I encourage everybody in the world to get more involved and try to help as much as possible.

Mariah on Australia's Sunrise Monday
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 05-Jun-2008, 11:17PM EDT

Mariah & James Tobin

Entertainment Reporter James Tobin's exclusive interview with Mariah in Tokyo, Japan will air on the Australian breakfast show, Sunrise Monday, June 9th.

Sunrise airs weekdays 6:00am-9:00am on Channel 7.

From the Herald Sun:
Tobin Bothers
SUNRISE entertainment reporter James Tobin knows the way to a girl's heart is with diamonds - even a girl as rich as Mariah Carey.

Not relying on his looks, Tobin presented the singer with a 1.2 carat, 114-diamond-encrusted butterfly brooch as a "get talking" gift.

It worked - and the singer revealed having a family has become her No.1 priority.

The one-on-one with the pop diva just weeks after she married Nick Cannon was a good score and would have impressed the Channel 7 execs.

The Carey interview airs on Monday.

Sandler Mentions Mariah in Zohan Interview

Adam Sandler talks about his latest project, "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," with MTV News: his thoughts on how Zohan would fare against James Bond, when the next "Chanukah Song" is coming out, what his upcoming project with Judd Apatow is all about and why Mariah Carey alone could bring peace to the Middle East.

MTV News: The T-shirt you're wearing throughout the film: Why Mariah Carey?

Sandler: We just thought it would be funny if [people in] the Middle East were constantly fighting about everything. The only thing they agreed upon is how hot Mariah is. And it's true.

MTV: She could single-handedly bring peace to the region.

Sandler: She's trying!

Fox News: Did I mention that Mariah Carey not only has an extended cameo with lines, but also gets her new single played? She plays herself and she's very funny. (Mariah, stick to comedy!) Zohan also inexplicably wears a number of her different T-shirts from over the years.

Entertainment Weekly: And although there is an onslaught of sexual content and a parade of guest stars in cameos, the essential conservatism of the project guarantees that there are absolutely no surprises in a padded 112 minutes. (Okay, one surprise: Mariah Carey has a funny line promoting her own conservative musical product.)

Star Tribune: There's a spirit of avant-garde goofiness to the new Adam Sandler movie that sets it apart from his usual sophomoric work. Sprung from the fertile comic imaginations of Robert Smigel ("Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog") and Judd Apatow (the grand vizier of film comedy), it exists in a slap-happy parallel universe. In "You Don't Mess with the Zohan," Israeli commandos dream of styling mousse and blow driers, hummus is a dip served with eyeglasses, and Mariah Carey asks terrorists to explain Bluetooth technology.

Red Orbit: The random cameo of the year award goes to Mariah Carey, who shows up singing the national anthem at the Israel-Lebanon hacky sack match. Yes, a hacky sack match. Yet with all its faults, "Zohan" is eminently watchable because of its unpredictability.

Associated Press: And with cameos from Mariah Carey, Charlotte Rae, George Takei, Dave Matthews and John McEnroe, it's got to feature the most random cross-section of humanity since "Zoolander." Sandler's bod is pretty impressive. He worked out with a Navy SEAL for four months and it shows, even when he's dressed in Zohan's usual ridiculous ensemble of a Mariah Carey tank top and Daisy Duke shorts. We've never had much reason to think of him as a sex symbol -- or a commentator on global issues, for that matter -- but in "Zohan," he almost transforms himself into both at the same time. Almost.

Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 04-Jun-2008, 8:38AM EDT
As previously reported, in the press conference for E=MC² at The Peninsula Tokyo Monday, June 2nd, Mariah confirmed that her next single will be "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time." "What do I know about the video? I know that it's gonna utilize a lot of the beautiful nature obviously that you get when you go to Hawaii. It's a gorgeous place. And I don't wanna be talking about some...to my idea before I put it out there but there's another element to it that's really fun that I don't think anyone else has done yet. So I'm kind of looking forward to that. Chris Applebaum is the director. I've never worked with him, but I really like his work."

[Chris Applebaum's most recent work includes directing music videos for Rihanna ("Umbrella"), Mary J. Blige ("Just Fine") and Jonas Brothers ("SOS"); and television commercials for Old Spice, Carl's Jr., Cover Girl, Hugo Boss. He received MTV's 2007 Video of the Year Award for Rihanna's "Umbrella."]

In more news from the Chinese press, according to reports from Apple Daily Hong Kong and Apple Daily Taiwan, Mariah was late for 7 hours to the press conference at The Peninsula Tokyo. She was scheduled to be there at 5:00pm but didn't show up until midnight. The photo call only lasted for 20 seconds and each journalist could only ask one question. Mariah said she will go to Hawaii to shoot the music video to "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" but Nick won't be going with her but will meet her there a few days later. Mariah said originally she wanted to invite Nick Cannon to be in the "Touch My Body" video but couldn't make it in the end. She plans on having kids but not now because she is planning to tour.

Below are more photos from the press conference, and scans from the Chinese newspapers, Oriental Daily and The Sun.

Mariah To Play Ireland's Point Depot in March '09?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 04-Jun-2008, 8:35AM EDT
It has been reported in The Irish Mirror Newspaper (4th June 08) that Mariah Carey has signed a deal to perform not one but two live concerts at the Point Depot in Dublin, Ireland in March of next year. This venue is currently closed and under major renovations therefore making Mariah one of the first acts to grace its stage.

This will be the first concert Mariah will have ever performed in Ireland apart from her appearance at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 1999 where she performed Heartbreaker (Remix) with Da Brat and Missy Elliott. The article goes on to say that Mariah is very excited about performing in Ireland as she is very proud that her mother is of Irish decent.

Mariah in Magazines
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 02-Jun-2008, 5:52AM EDT
From the May 2008 issue of UK's Pride magazine.

The Surreal World of MC
The nicest diva in the music industry, Mariah Carey is back with a vengeance, boasting a brand-new album and a slender physique. She talked to a tipsy Jessica Huie about the stress of dieting, the importance of friends and her relationship with God.

Half an hour later and my carefully planned line of questioning is forgotten. The situation isn't helped by the fact that we are sitting in a darkened room lit only by scores of scented tea lights that, while creating a lovely chilled-out ambience, make it impossible for me to see my notebook. Mariah's lovely assistant Jim appears and signals that my time is up. "No, Jim we're not done! It's my fault, I've been distracting her - we need five more minutes." A tipsy half an hour later, and we're talking men. I ask MC if she has someone, and she responds: "I don't know... do you have someone?", which prompts a conversation into whether you ever really have somebody or if a relationship is merely a transient thing that is never assured. Fascinating stuff, even at 3am. Despite my being happily ensconced in a relationship, MC's trying to set me up with her nephew. "He's 33 and has just graduated from Harvard Law School. He was even voted one of the world's most eligible bachelors... you'd be perfect together!" What I really want to know, however, is why, at 37, with beauty, brains and a wicked sense of humour, Mariah herself hasn't been snapped up. READ MORE »

Mariah Makes "50 Most Powerful Women in NYC"
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 02-Jun-2008, 12:20AM EDT
Mariah was included in a list of The 50 Most Powerful Women in NYC, published by the New York Post Sunday, June 1, 2008.

The list, which includes such names as presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (#1), TV journalist Barbara Walters (#9), talk show host Kelly Ripa (#14), actress Natalie Portman (#27), author Jhumpa Lahiri (#32), columnist Liz Smith (#47), is billed "they leverage buyouts and sell out stores, top the charts and chart the budget."

Here's what the NY Post had to say about Mariah, ranked at #40:

40) Mariah Carey, 38, pop star. Not long ago, things looked dire for the Long Island native - dropped from her record label, trying to live down "Glitter." Now she's back as R&B's biggest diva, with her song "Touch My Body" becoming her 18th No. 1 single - pushing her past Elvis Presley and second only to the Beatles in chart-toppers.
