Press Reactions to "Manly" Mariah Photos
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 30-Jun-2009, 4:03PM EDT
When pictures of Mariah from the set of the video shoot for "Obsessed" have emerged, they made quite a buzz; and the online news/blogging community was quick to react and give their comments. Mariah Carey" is on the main page of today's Yahoo! and is listed as the #1 most searched term on "Top Searches."
Entertainment Weekly: She's a man, baby! We knew Mariah had a killer hair and makeup crew — when does she not look flawless? — but extra accolades for turning the curvilicious diva into her nemesis, Eminem, for her upcoming "Obsessed" video. I like Mariah with a sense of humor, and I love the idea of her turning the tables on the king of celebrity-mocking videos. Here's to hoping Bruno shows up...
New York Daily News: This is not your everyday poseur Eminem wannabe – it's Mariah Carey, who dressed as the controversial rapper while filming her new video "Obsessed" in New York... It's great that Mariah seems to be having fun with this whole "Mininem" thing, but we're afraid of the conflict going any further, because no one wants to see the next step: Eminem in drag.
New York Post: It's Mariah Carey! The human butterfly embraced her macho side while filming the music video for "Obsessed," lead single off "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," her new CD. I'm guessing the video involves Mariah's butch bellhop becoming a little infatuated with the singer, or something. Basically it's another way to give her double the screentime -- much like that Mariah-on-Mariah fight in "Heartbreaker!
People Magazine: Looks like Mariah Carey is having the last laugh in her ongoing feud with Eminem. While filming her latest music video for the song "Obsessed" in New York on Monday, Carey was snapped sporting an oversized sweatshirt, fitted baseball cap and baggy sweatpants, an outfit noticeably similar to Eminem's performance wardrobe. The pop diva may finally be responding to lyrics from Eminem's recent album Relapse, on which the controversial rapper namedrops Carey in the track "Bagpipes From Baghdad."
MTV News: The three-way tussle pitting Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon against Eminem took another turn on Monday when Carey shot a video for her new single "Obsessed" — and dressed up like Em. Carey filmed scenes for the clip at the Plaza Hotel in New York, where she plays a man in two different costumes: One finds her in a bellhop uniform, while the other has her in a giant gray hoodie, a doo-rag and a thick goatee — apart from the beard, she's dressed exactly like Eminem (and looks very bizarre).
Los Angeles Times: Shades of Chaz Bono! But fear not. Mariah Carey is not giving up the gown. Our bodacious babe is definitely not having a sex change. That would totally bum out Nick Cannon. She's just spoofing rapper Eminem for her new video, "Obsessed," shooting on Monday in NYC. How's it feel, Em? How do you think Mariah looks better, as a dude or a dame? And how about them busy Susan Boyle eyebrows?
Access Hollywood: The celebrity feud between Mariah Carey and Eminem continued on Monday, when the singer sported a look very similar to the rapper’s while filming the video for her song, “Obsessed.” Is Mimi about to respond to the rapper’s song, “Bagpipes From Baghdad”? We’re giving round two of this celebrity feud to Mimi for her spot on impersonation of the rapper… Em, do you have a comeback?
This is London: Somebody ought to tell the usually image-conscious Mariah Carey that she needs to wax her moustache... and perhaps her goatee as well.
MTV UK: Mariah Carey seems intent on hitting back at Eminem with her new single Obsessed. In photos taken on the set of the video yesterday the singer is shown made up looking very much like the rapper. MC is shown as a white rapper in a grey hooded tracksuit. And while the goatee she sports reminds MTV of Vanilla Ice or Fred Durst it seems more likely she's having a dig at Eminem.

Mariah Carey "Obsessed"
By Nicole Frehsee, Rolling Stone
On the first single from her forthcoming album, Mimi dogs a dude (Eminem?) who's "lying that [he's] sexing [her]," unleashing zingers like "I can see right through you, like you're bathing in Windex" over dark and creeping synths. (She also attacks his bank account: "You're a mom-and-pop; I'm a corporation." Ouch!) Produced by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, the cut doesn't show off Mariah's fab pipes – Auto-Tuned coos are subdued in for those high C's – but it's the catchiest anti-stalking anthem of the summer.

A song that could become Mariah Carey's likewise 19th Hot 100 No. 1, bringing her within one of tying the Beatles' all-time mark, makes its first appearance on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

MDJ Special: Goodbye Michael Jackson
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 28-Jun-2009, 2:43AM EDT
Like the rest of the world, we here at MariahDaily.com are shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Michael Jackson. As a last farewell, we wanted to share some of Mariah's work that was directly or indirectly related to Michael Jackson - from her memorable #1 cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" at her 1992 MTV Unplugged concert to her appearance in Michael's fundraising concert in Korea in 1999 and her participation in "What More Can I Give?" the 2001 charity single written and produced by Michael. "I'm That Chick," one of the songs from Mariah's last album, E=MC² samples from Michael's 1980 single "Off The Wall" and even directly uses some of the lyrics from the bridge: "There ain't no rules, it's up to you!"

From Billboard's Chart Beat: NO. 1 FROM THE START: Michael Jackson was on his way to chart royalty beginning with the debut of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Nov. 15, 1969, when Jackson was 11 years old. The act would become the first to send its first four entries to the Hot 100's summit. The Jackson 5 remains the only group to start so strongly. Since, only Mariah Carey, who in 1992 reigned with her cover of "I'll Be There," matched (and bested) the feat, when her first five singles topped the Hot 100 in 1990-91.
Nick Cannon recently posed for the cover of GIANT Magazine. In a behind-the-scenes interview during the cover shoot, he talks about power, Barack Obama and how his love for Mariah is getting stronger by the day.
Nick Cannon: "Being married to my wife; and I love the fact that we are the unorthodox couple to a lot of people. I love being the underdog - 'never see you coming' - that's the secret of success to where people are like, 'Ah, that's fake, that's a publicity stunt, that's not gonna work, how crazy is that?' We're probably more in love today than we've ever been and it continues to grow so it's unexplainable. Really I can't explain it and I always give all the glory to God when it comes to that because to me that's what success is really about - where you can establish a family in a way that it's truly is something that is God-given and if God doesn't have his hand on a union like that, we've all seen... marriage right now isn't going strong in our community so we're just trying to be an example and continue to lead in that direction. It says a lot about a man who can have a powerful woman in his life and still stand tall and still hold his own."
The songwriting/production team of Christopher "Tricky" Stewart & The-Dream tied for Songwriter of the Year honors with Stargate (Tor Hermansen & Mikkel Eriksen) at the 22nd annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. Billboard Reviews "Obsessed"
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 26-Jun-2009, 3:55PM EDT
Jay-Z may have declared AutoTune dead, but Mariah Carey just revived it. On the debut single from her 12th studio album ("Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," due Aug. 25 on Island Def Jam), the singer who needs no vocal manipulation uses the effect with startling success. The key is making it look easy. Along with the-Dream and C. "Tricky" Stewart, Carey has crafted a gem of a diss record that coasts, even over its sputtering moans and synth jabs. One questionable Windex analogy aside, her lyrical boasts are biting and funny, and the syrupy lightness of her vocals is tailor-made for the ribbing she gives her mystery pursuant (reportedly Eminem). Though some lament Carey trading in her sky-high notes and ballads for a more constrained, R&B-friendly range, the singer has clearly found a new comfort zone that could very well produce her 19th No. 1 hit.

Mariah Has Two Biggest Songs of Summer
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 25-Jun-2009, 12:30AM EDT
If music is the soundtrack of our lives, that's especially true in the summer. The radio is a constant companion at backyard barbeques, pool parties and road trips. Now that summer is upon us, it's a good time to scroll back through the biggest songs of summers past. These are the songs that logged the most weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 during the summer months of every year since 1955. These are the songs that you heard over and over at the beach or on vacation or on that endless ride to Grandma's house.
Elvis Presley had the biggest song of the summer three times, more than any other artist. He scored with "Hound Dog"/"Don't Be Cruel" in 1956, "Let Me Your Teddy Bear" in 1957 and "It's Now Or Never" in 1960. Five other artists had (or shared) the #1 song of the summer twice. These hit-makers are Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Usher, Andy Gibb and Paul Anka.
2005: Mariah Carey's comeback smash "We Belong Together" spent 11 weeks at #1 in the summer (and three additional weeks on top in the spring).
1990: Mariah Carey's "Vision Of Love," was #1 for four weeks. The sleek and assured ballad was her first chart hit.
Click here to see the full list of songs that logged the most weeks at #1 in each summer (June 21 through September 20) dating back to 1955.
Nick Cannon: "Mariah is the funniest person"
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 24-Jun-2009, 6:47PM EDT
Now that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have celebrated one year of wedded bliss, everyone wants to know when the show-biz couple will start adding to the family. Cannon assured MTV News that kids are in their plan — just not yet.
"That is the question that everyone asks. It's one of those things. ... We had an amazing year, and now I feel like we've established our household," he told MTV News. "We're getting things together. So as soon as our schedules calm down, that's where our focus will go."
Until then, he and Carey will have some more alone time to make each other laugh. "People do not understand how funny Mariah is," he said. "Neither one of us take anything serious. And it's like everyone gets to see this whole diva facade and all of that, but she's like the funniest person and knows how to make fun of herself."
He added that she has the perfect attitude to go with his goofy nature: "To be a comedian and have someone else that I really think is just funny to share my life with is dope."
Cannon said there are a lot of misconceptions about his wife due to celebrity-gossip magazines. "The diva stuff, like, everything you hear in the tabloids: 'She bathes in Evian,' " he said, before jokingly adding, "It's really Fiji. She bathes in Fiji.
"Come on! All of that stuff. She's just regular like any other chick would be. She's just kicking it."

Boston Herald Reviews "Obsessed"
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 23-Jun-2009, 3:42AM EDT
MARIAH CAREY "Obsessed" (Island) By Lauren Carter, Boston Herald Rating: B+
The soon-to-be-hot song of the season comes from Mrs. Nick Cannon, who wants to know, like, "Why you so obsessed with me?" The lead single off Mariah's forthcoming "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (expected release date: Aug. 25) is a crunk-flavored query into the mind of a borderline stalker who fronts like he's all up in Carey's bedroom, when really, if he were the last man on earth, he "still couldn't get this." Sorry, unnamed dude (who could be Eminem), but Mimi "can see right through you like you're bathin' in Windex." With help from Auto-Tune and beat wizards Tricky and The-Dream, Carey's musical stiff-arm ends with some vocal acrobatics to let us know she's still got it. Expect to get "Obsessed" this summer.

Nick Wants Kids to be Doctors
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 21-Jun-2009, 3:12PM EDT
From the June 29th issue of People:
Nick Cannon: America's New Host! The actor, 28, takes the stage as host of NBC's America's Got Talent while being the perfect entertainer at home with wife Mariah Carey.
What Kind Of Host Will You Be? I come from the world of improv, so expect more humor. I'm bringing out the cool, sexy, corny and goofy side of me.
How are your hosting skills at home? At our dinner parties, I'm always the loudest person in the room, making toasts and making sure everyone is settled. When we had our one-year anniversary in Las Vegas, I got the room together to gather our hands and say a prayer. My wife appreciates that quality in me.
When you have kids, will they be in showbiz? I'm not going to be one of those stage daddies who says, "Get out there and sing!" I want to raise some doctors and astronauts. Or even singing doctors!
America's Got Talent premieres on Tuesday, June 23rd on NBC.

Mariah Ups R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Entries with "Obsessed"
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 20-Jun-2009, 12:01AM EDT
CAN'T SPELL MARY J. BLIGE WITHOUT 'R' AND 'B': The format cornerstone charts her 57th entry on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, as "The One" opens at No. 60. Blige arrived with the eventual No. 1 "You Remind Me" on the May 2, 1992, chart.
Blige's sum extends her lead for most charted titles among women in the '90s and '00s. In second place is Mariah Carey with 47 entries, although that total should increase next week. "Obsessed," the first single from Carey's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," due Aug. 25, looks likely to roar onto next week's chart following its release to radio Tuesday (June 17).
Song of the Summer: Mariah Carey Dominates
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 19-Jun-2009, 7:53PM EDT
It's late, the weather's nice (for the moment), and we've got big news so we're just gonna lay it on you: Mariah Carey has snatched the No. 1 Song of the Summer spot from the Black Eyed Peas, whose "Boom Boom Pow" is officially overplayed out – and faces an enemy from within: "I Gotta Feeling," by the Black Eyed Peas. Elsewhere, Cobra Starship and the Gossip burst the bounds of their respective genres to offer straight-up summer hotness, and Sean Kingston has us so ready to dance in front of the AC in our unmentionables.
Whether or not it's about Eminem, as some maintain (and the lyrics don't say Marshall Mathers to us – more like Stan), Mariah Carey's "Obsessed" contains one of the all-time great put-downs: "You're a mom-and-pop, I'm a corporation." (And you know Wal-Mart haters are turned on.) If nothing else, Mariah's an institution: Second only to the Beatles in No. 1 singles, she's the closest thing this summer has to a dominant (pun intended) diva – Keri Hilson's gonna touch her? Fergie? And, like the best summer tracks, this song's a shape-shifter: it's a slow jam, but with Gucci Mane on the remix; it's sexy, but a dis track; it's dark, but you'll sing along. Spin us right round, Mariah, and feel free to do so all summer.
1. Mariah Carey, "Obsessed": Congratulations to Mariah on the Power Rankings' first-ever No. 1 debut. On a side note, another notch in Mariah's impressive SOTS CV are her gritty choices in remix partners: following in the footsteps of O.D.B. and Jadakiss come Gucci Mane and the official "Obsessed" remix.
Movie Review: Tennessee
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 19-Jun-2009, 6:27PM EDT
Tennessee (Vivendi Ent.) By Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel Movie Critic 2 out of 5 stars
Tennessee, a formulaic indie road drama, plays like a prospectus for an indie film. New Mexico has filmmaker incentives, so we'll shoot a lot of it there. Find a pop star willing to work cheap as she takes another stab at a film career. Those two elements secure your funding. Now try and write a movie around them.
This isn't really Mariah Carey's movie, and she doesn't take the chances here that she does in the acclaimed Sundance drama Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. But she has a knack for playing beaten down and a way with a world-weary line.
"A good day?" she's asked. "I can't even tell any more," she drawls in a way any waitress will recognize.
Her willingness to trek to Tennessee (and New Mexico) shows her to be indie-friendly, which means this movie may do things for her movie career even if virtually nobody sees it or buys the soundtrack.

Rolling Stone on "Obsessed" Remix
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 19-Jun-2009, 12:32PM EDT
Mariah Carey feat. Gucci Mane, "Obsessed" [Remix] We're officially to the point where it's almost like the remixes are out before the songs themselves. Gucci Mane runs roughshod over a more-or-less unaltered version of Mariah's latest single, but his husky voice and sing-song delivery make it sound like a whole different animal.
Is Gucci Mane going from the Trap House to the penthouse? After appearing on a remix of the Black Eyed Peas' #1 single "Boom Boom Pow," the Atlanta MC recorded his biggest collaboration to date: a remix of Mariah Carey's new single "Obsessed."
"That joint hard, ain't it? It was crazy," he said about working with Mariah. "It was big."
Gucci said 50 Cent's manager, Chris Lighty, orchestrated the guest appearance.
"Shout-out to Mariah Carey and her whole squad and my boy Chris Lighty," Gucci said. "He got me and Mariah together. I appreciate it. He put me on there as well as her. Both of them are smart for doing that. The song came out hard. Mariah knew I wanted to do a song with her. It finally happened, and it turned out hard. I just flew up there to New York, went in the studio with her. I flew right out and went back on the road. When I do a song with people, I like to really get in the studio with them so I could feel they swag and they could feel mine. The music comes out better."
Can Mariah Carey finally win top Grammy Awards?
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 18-Jun-2009, 6:28PM EDT
Mariah Carey goes on the offensive in her new single – "Obsessed" – taking on Eminem among others. The track is the first off of her album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" due out Aug. 25. That release date means this 12th studio album by Mariah Carey just makes the new Aug. 31 cut-off for Grammy Awards eligibility.
Though Mariah has racked up 34 Grammy nominations (among female artists, second only to Aretha Franklin), she has managed only five wins. And none of those victories came in the top categories of album, record and song of the year.
The singer has always prided herself on her songwriting abilities. In "Obsessed," she wrote in a rap directed to Eminem, "Why are you so obsessed with me/ Boy I wanna know/ Lying that you're sexing me/ When everybody knows/ It's clear that you're upset with me."
While Eminem has said that he and Mariah were one-time lovers, she repeatedly has denied his claim. On his new album "Relapse," Eminem references Carey and her new husband, Nick Cannon, in a less-than-flattering light on the track "Bagpipes From Baghdad."
Over the years, Eminem has won nine Grammys but lost both of his bids for album and record of the year. As a songwriter, he has contended for song of the year only once. And he did not land a best new artist nod when he burst onto the music scene in 2000.
Mariah Carey was named best new artist in 1990 for her self-titled debut album. And she won best pop vocal, female, that year. Then, though her follow-up albums all went platinum, there was a Grammy Awards drought until her smash hit "The Emancipation of Mimi."
Mariah went into the 2005 Grammys with eight nominations but left with only three wins, in the R&B genre – contemporary album, song ("We Belong Together") and female vocal. The singer-songwriter lost the big prizes of album, record and song of the year to U2 and Green Day.
And her 2008 follow-up – the critically acclaimed, chart-topping "E=MC2" – did not have the right formula to win over Grammy voters. She was snubbed for that album as a whole and her historic No. 1 single, "Touch My Body," was shockingly shut out as well. She picked up just a nod for her gospel collaboration on "I Understand."

Mariah Exacts Revenge on Eminem
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 18-Jun-2009, 4:23AM EDT
Mariah Carey is finally getting back at Eminem. Her revenge for his ranting and raving about their alleged "affair" is a witty, biting new single called "Obsessed."
Good for Mariah, who's had to put up with Eminem's lunatic name calling for the last couple of years. Then, just to get publicity, Eminem took more swipes at her on his new CD in a song called "Bagpipes from Baghdad."
In the "song" – a term used loosely – the execrable Eminem calls Carey the "c word." (This is what your kids are spending millions on, folks. Wise up.) He not only attacks the singer but her husband, Nick Cannon, and long ago boyfriend Luis Miguel.
Mariah's comeback is funnier, catchier, and more likely to be a bigger hit. "Why are you obsessed with me?" she sings to one of the best hooks in her storied history. "You're delusional/you're confused/you're losing your mind," Mariah continues. "Lyin' that your sexin' me." Ouch!
And the winner is: Universal Music Group. Both performers record for them. And a feud is always good for business! "Obsessed," by the way, is the first single from Mariah's new album, due August 25th, to be called "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel."

Who Will Have The Summer Jam of '09?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 17-Jun-2009, 12:35PM EDT
MTV names ten songs as candidates for "Summer Jam of '09" and predicts Mariah's "Obsessed" to take this year's Summer Anthem crown.
Mariah Carey, "Obsessed" Odds That It Will Rule the Summer: 4:1
Just 14 months after 2008's E=MC² album fizzled, Mimi returns, this time with an Auto-Tuned kiss-off to wannabe lotharios (and Eminem?) that will probably be the soundtrack to a million summer hookups and just as many public-intoxication collars. And I'm not just saying that because the hook reminds me so much of Jamie Foxx's "Blame It," either. Glossy, flossy and decidedly "urban," Mariah strikes back. Your radio has been warned.
What: Mariah Carey's "Obsessed," the first single off her upcoming album.
How is it: This is a feistier Mimi than we're used to, as she comes out firing in the song's opening moments. "Why are you so obsessed with me?" questions an obviously irritated Carey.
Is she lashing out at Eminem? The gossip hounds? A simple scolding at a new breed of pop divas? It doesn't really matter. Either way, it will help Mariah stay in the headlines for weeks to come -- long enough to fuel hype for her album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," which will be conveniently released (on Aug. 25) in time to make the cut for the new Grammy eligibility rules.
With The-Dream and Tricky Stewart sharing production credits, Carey has been molded to fit current trends. The still-ubiquitous Auto-Tune is here (a look she played with on "E=MC2's" "Migrate); this time, it's used to bring a slight electronic manipulation to her trademark wails. No need to worry about hitting high notes when computers are all the rage these days, and the thick, pointed keyboards will allow Carey to fit comfortably on Top-40 play lists that are currently obsessed with Lady Gaga's "Poker Face."
Ultimately, that's the point here, as this seems like a tune pointedly designed to get radio play and provide us press types with some new topics to try to get Carey to address on the red carpet, which she will artfully deflect from now until mid-November.
The song is put-down after put-down, with Carey declaring that she "ain't gonna feed you / Gonna let you starve," and the hard-not-to-quote, "You're a mom and pop / I'm a corporation." She doesn't really sound angry -- just a little bemused at her attackers, even if the high road would have been to ignore them. But the sophisticated route doesn't always generate hype, and "Obsessed" is certainly more lively than her earlier work with The-Dream (the bedroom slow-dance "My Love").
Unfortunately, it's an even more anonymous Carey than ever before. One of the biggest selling points of "E=MC2" was Carey dropping the over-the-top howling, and learning how to sing with a more restrained range. She thankfully left the showboating to the "American Idol" kids, and stayed closer to the rhythms. Yet "Obsessed" again sells out the songbird to her producers.

MARIAH CAREY "Obsessed" (Island/IDJMG)
Mariah Carey has released a brand new single for the summer of 2009, "Obsessed." It was written and produced by Mariah, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart and is the first single from her forthcoming Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, which is due in stores on August 25 and is Mariah's 12th studio album and the much anticipated follow-up to her platinum-selling E=MC² and her worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi. It's hard to find an artist with Carey's track record who seems to deliver consistently over their entire career. Some things just seem to get better with time and I for one have always been as much a fan of MC's lower vocal register as her signature high end power. There's no doubt that Mariah can sing like no one else, but sometimes less is best, as is the case on this hypnotic track that is sure to keep MC fans totally "Obsessed!" And is it just me or is there a slim chance that MC is sending a message to a certain someone? BET ON IT!

Mariah's "Obsessed" single takes down Eminem
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 16-Jun-2009, 5:25PM EDT
Whoa! Could this be the first time a diva trumps a rapper in a hip-hop beef?
Mariah Carey throws some elbows on her new single "Obsessed" – the first track from her upcoming "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (Island) due out Aug. 25, which debuted on radio this afternoon – and they're all landing on her tormentor Eminem.
"Why you so obsessed with me? Lying that you're sexing me?" the Greenlawn native sings in the chorus, before delivering the kiss-off "You're delusional. Boy, you're losing your mind."
Despite the harsh words – tossing around digs like "You're a mom-and-pop, I'm a corporation" and referring to his "Napoleon complex" – Carey plays it cool on the track that she co-wrote with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. She coos confidently, riding the laid-back beat, probably holding back the laughs as she insults again.
It plays far smoother than her husband Nick Cannon's fiery response last month to Eminem's "Bagpipes from Baghdad," where Eminem raps about taking Carey back from him and then calls her a "[expletive] whore." Of course, the Mariah-Eminem flak goes back for years, after he claimed they were in a six-month relationship, which Carey denies.
"Your legacy has now been tainted from this day forth!" Cannon wrote (and then retracted) on his blog. "You will now be known as the rapper who lost to corny-ass Nick Cannon!" But "Obsessed" seems to go even farther. Eminem was torn down by Mariah herself. Right now, it's MC: 1, EM 0.

Mariah Carey Puts Finishing Touches on Her New Album, MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL, for August 25th Release
"OBSESSED," FIRST NEW SINGLE PICK - GOES TO RADIO ON JUNE 16th - WRITTEN & PRODUCED BY MARIAH, THE-DREAM AND TRICKY STEWART
"The 1st single from my new album MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL is called 'Obsessed' and will be at radio next Tuesday. I'm a lil' exc ... Seriously, this is one of my favorite songs ever. I love the whole album. I'm completely immersed in it. I can't wait for you to hear it. LY" - Mariah Carey, on Twitter
First came the emancipation, then came energy and power, and now comes MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL, the new album by international superstar Mariah Carey, scheduled to arrive on August 25th. The first new single pick from MEMOIRS is "Obsessed," which blasts out to radio today, Tuesday, June 16th. The video for "Obsessed" will be directed by Brett Ratner. "Obsessed" was written and produced by Mariah, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who are responsible for the majority of tracks on the new album. MEMOIRS was executive-produced by Antonio "L.A." Reid.
MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL, the 12th studio album of Mariah's career, is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to her RIAA platinum-selling album E=MC² (released April 15, 2008), and her worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (released April 12, 2005). Both were Soundscan #1 debut albums that made chart history for Mariah in the U.S. and numerous territories around the globe.
The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. The album debuted at #1 on first week sales of 404,000 copies, Mariah's highest first week sales total (until E=MC²). Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's.
Three years later, E=MC² debuted at #1 on first week sales of 463,000 copies, which now stands as the highest first week sales total of Mariah's career. The album's success brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 160 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history.
E=MC² spun off four singles: "Touch My Body," "Bye Bye," "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time," and "I Stay In Love." Of these, "Touch My Body" made history when it became Mariah's 18th #1 Hot 100 hit, thus surpassing Elvis Presley. "Touch My Body"'s two weeks at the top also marked Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated in Billboard.com. At the same time, Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits.

"Obsessed" Remix to Feature Rapper Gucci Mane
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009, 5:20PM EDT
Earlier today, rapper Gucci Mane was on the phone live on Hot 107.9's Gangsta Grillz Radio in Atlanta with DJ Drama. He talked about his new and upcoming projects; and confirmed that he and Mariah were in the studio recently working on the remix to "Obsessed."
Atlanta-raised rapper Gucci Mane, born Radric Davis in Bessemer, Alabama, has drawn his inspiration from a pantheon of rappers before him - Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, the Beastie Boys, N.W.A. In describing his signature sound, he says, "I call my music straight Gucci: going hard and whatever beats you make you for me, if I'm feeling it, if I'm rocking with it, I'm gonna crush it. When you hear me, you hear a lot of pain, a lot of hood; you hear what's going on in the inner city in Atlanta."
You can listen to some tracks from Gucci's latest album Back to the Trap House at his MySpace music page.
No release date has been set for the "Obsessed" Remix. The original version of "Obsessed" is due out to radio on Tuesday, June 16th. B96 is world premiering the song at 3pm CT (1pm PT/4pm ET). Hope you're counting the days down with us!

Nick: "I Love Mariah's Curves!"
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009, 12:26AM EDT
From the June 22nd issue of Us Weekly, Love Lives section, page 45.
I Love Mariah's Curves! "I always tell her, 'Girl, you've got all those curves and me with no brakes,'" Nick Cannon, 28, tells Us of loving Mariah Carey's voluptuous body.
And though the singer, 39, has gotten attention for her weight fluctuations, her hubby says she's happy with her shape. "It's something that everyone deals with. Everybody is different for a reason; it ain't about trying to be super-skinny. That's not what's hot. It's about what's inside."
Cavalli Always On Call
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 13-Jun-2009, 5:43PM EDT
Roberto Cavalli didn't stay comfortable for too long in his VIP seat at the Apollo Theater Monday night. The designer dressed Mariah Carey for the 75th anniversary celebration, which gathered Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jaime Foxx, Richard Parsons, The O'Jays, Robin Roberts and Steve Harvey, among others. But Carey nearly had a wardrobe malfunction when a photographer stepped on her dress while Carey walked the red carpet, jerking the songstress backward. She was so concerned that the dress might have ripped that she summoned Cavalli from his seat to her dressing room. Though unclear what, if any, alterations Cavalli did to repair the dress, all seemed fine when Carey took the stage to introduce LaBelle, who was inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame along with music producer Quincy Jones.

The-Dream Talks About Mariah's "Answer" Record
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 11-Jun-2009, 1:27PM EDT
The-Dream hinted that Mariah Carey's next single is an outcry, perhaps at Eminem, that may shock the media world.
Speaking simply about upcoming productions, the artist said, "The most anticipated is the Mariah project, and she just released a fire record in the building today. And we have been blasting it out all day. It's just f**king retarded. I don't think anybody is going to expect her to come out punching like she is going to come out. But she got a record."
He continued, hinting at the content, "It's going to light the blogs up too because you don't know who she talking about, what she talking about, but she talking about something. And remember The-Dream told you first. So you can start that up right now. Mariah Carey has a record, and somebody's going to be very upset. I said that."
Mariah Mention in Nick's GIANT Cover Story
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 11-Jun-2009, 4:37AM EDT
Nick Cannon graces the cover of the July 2009 Power Issue of GIANT (now out on newsstands). Below are excerpts from the magazine's cover story where Nick mentions his wife Mariah Carey.
[Nick] Cannon's marriage to Mariah Carey is also the result of the particular mental electromagnetism he seems to have mastered. He had been dropping her name as a foil for questions about "celebrity crushes" for years, but it wasn't until the 2005 Teen Choice Awards that they met face-to-face. "I've heard all the nice things you've been saying," Carey told him backstage, before beng whisked off by her handlers. Their romance began a few years later, when she cast Cannon as her love interest in the video for "Bye Bye." Before the shoot they met for lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and discovered similarities between them after Cannon paused to say grace over an order of french fries. She pulled an electronic Bible from her pocketbook. "Not everyone shares spirituality," Carey says. "When you have that in common, it's unique."
Besides spirituality, an apartment in Tribeca, New York, and houses in Bel Air, California, and the Bahamas, the couple share a taste for adolescent goofiness. When Cannon proposed, it was by hiding a 17-carat pink-diamond ring inside a lollipop package and presenting it to Carey on the roof of her building. He understands where her gravitation toward butterflies, rainbows and being "eternally twelve" comes from. "We know how to be highly intellectual and well -spoken," he says, "And we've done that for so long that we really appreciate the youthfulness, where we can be stupid and silly." In turn, Carey sees facets of her husband that extend beyond public view. "All comedians have a darker side to them," she says. There's a need to be a class clown or the funniest person in the room. It comes from somewhere. I think we both understand what it's like not to have the most traditional of upbringings."
Cannon has been well known since he was a teenager, but he frequently calls his wife "the most famous woman in the world," and admits complications accompany such a title. On Easter Sunday, the pair visited Cannon's family in San Diego. Carey voiced concerns about paparazzi, but he insisted that bringing security or having her hair and wardrobe done were unnecessary measures. Sure enough, a photographer was lying in wait. "She was right," he says. "And now the picture's in US Weekly." The photo spurred commentary about Carey's weight on gossip blogs and sparked pregnancy rumors. "We want to be normal—we are normal," Cannon says. "But everyone on the outside wants to put us in a fishbowl."
Bromidic celebrity gripes about privacy notwithstanding, Cannon has adapted well to this bigger pond. Most importantly, success has come on his own terms. Never has he fled from the happy-go-lucky image that made him so endearing to the masses—and in fact, pretentiousness, solemnity, self-importance or any other assumed characteristics of adulthood hold little appeal. "The thing that's crazy to me is that the majority of people see a person that's likable as corny," says Cannon. "It's me. Everything I've ever wanted in life, my personality has got me that. I'm-a drive this corny-ass Phantom to the corny-ass bank and cash these corny-ass checks. I love being corny."

Lee Daniels Talks About Tennessee with IFC
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 10-Jun-2009, 7:38PM EDT
Director, producer and general force of nature Lee Daniels is a hot property these days. So hot that two studios, Lionsgate and the Weinstein Company, are suing each other over the rights to distribute his second directorial effort, "Precious," the winner of both the jury and audience awards at Sundance earlier this year. Lawsuits willing, "Precious" opens in the fall, and in the meantime Daniels has "Tennessee" in theaters, a small-scale Americana-steeped road movie he produced under his own banner of Lee Daniels Entertainment. "Tennessee," directed by David Cronenberg nephew Aaron Woodley, has the distinction of containing the first Mariah Carey acting role to officially see theaters since "Glitter," something that was looked upon as potentially laughable when the film premiered at Tribeca last year, but that seems a lot less so now, in light of the singer's praised turn as a social worker in "Precious."
"Tennessee" (2008) Aaron Woodley had it the easiest of all of my directors. I hired him for his palate really, a visual that's intoxicating. He did his thing, but I really didn't do my thing. I did "Tennessee" because I wanted to show a sense of versatility, that I could do something that wasn't too wild. I'd just come up from "Shadowboxer" -- that was crazy. This is a lot tamer. I wanted to appeal to a specific demographic that I don't ordinarily appeal to, which is, you know, those Republicans out there? People that voted for Sarah Palin? There was something simple about the movie. I didn't have to think too hard, like, "What is the statement that we're trying to make here?" I'm very good friends with Mariah [Carey]. I wanted to work with her, and I think that it prepared me for my work with her in "Precious," ultimately.
Janet Jackson "Tennessee" was originally written for Janet Jackson -- she was the first person I had in mind. I said, "Janet, I don't want to work with you if you don't put on weight. I want you fat in this." She put on all this weight for me. We were trying to raise the money and she was fat and she was like, "Lee! Lee!" [laughs] I didn't realize how catastrophic it was until I'm looking at "Oprah" one day and she had gained all this weight for a movie that never happened. Oprah said, "Were you pissed?" She was a really good sport about it, but it was borderlining on obese. Finally she said, "Lee, I have a record to drop. I have to look good. This is insanity. This movie's never going to happen." Then as soon as she bailed, we got the money.
Mariah Carey Mariah came down to my set on "Shadowboxer." I just fell in love. She's outrageous and fun and makes me laugh. People have this impression of her -- I had that impression of her, until you know her and realize she's making fun of herself. As we became friends I saw her do impersonations. She does an Aretha Franklin like no other. How can you impersonate Aretha Franklin? I said, "I'm gonna find a job for you." I sent her the script and yeah; she did it. I was really glad.
I never thought about "Glitter." I didn't think it was bad. Her persona was so what it was -- people didn't understand her and she got a bad rap for it -- she wasn't bad in the movie. She was very nervous [doing "Tennessee"] because she knew that she had a perception of being... She saw me working and how serious I was and how we don't have money. There's no room for a masseur, for tardiness, for an extra hairdresser. The beauty of independent cinema for me is everybody's doing something. During "Shadowboxer," we all were down and drinking one day, Macy Gray, Monique, myself and Cuba. We had a scene, and Helen Mirren came down and got us out of a bar.

Mariah: "'Obsessed' is so video ready"

Brett Ratner to direct "Obsessed" music video!
Mariah has confirmed via a Twitter direct message to Australian fan Dani that Brett Ratner will be directing the music video for "Obsessed," the lead single from her upcoming album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.
"Obsessed" will be Mariah and Brett's 7th music video they have collaborated on. Brett previously directed Mariah's "I Still Believe" (1998), "Heartbreaker" (1999), "Thank God I Found You" (2000), "It's Like That" (2005), "We Belong Together" (2005) and "Touch My Body" (2008) music videos.
Mariah's Introduction of Inductee Patti LaBelle "I stand here on the Apollo stage, a stage where through the years you have given stellar performance after stellar performance in a way that is uniquely you. You have become the benchmark by which singing is judged. You are a headliner's headliner, after all who would be crazy enough to follow you.
We thank you for sharing your gift with us and I am personally so honored to know you. I thank you for always, always sharing your gift of love and friendship with me. Ladies and gentlemen, the incomparable... please give a warm welcome to the newest member of the legends of the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame... Patti LaBelle!"
Related News Article: Mariah, Quincy, Cosbys, Jamie Foxx Toast the Apollo (Showbiz 411) It was Prince who stole the pre-dinner show because he was a well kept secret. He appeared on stage without any announcement after the band played a minute or so of soft jazz. He wore what looked like orange silk pajamas. He brandished his diamond walking stick. The audience roared with delight. He spoke softly, as usual. It's the most I've ever heard him say cogently in public.
"Patti LaBelle is my mother, sister, teacher, my cook," he said in a Marilyn Monroe-esque whisper. "She's taught me so much, she helps my guitar playing. I make my guitar sound like her voice."
Then Prince said he had a friend in the wings to help introduce LaBelle, but the friend wouldn't come out when he motioned to him/her. So he went back there to fish the person out. Suddenly, a professional announcer's voice boomed, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Miss Mariah Carey."
Mariah, sexy and celebratory, not looking at all like the pepperpot described in Monday's Page Six, appeared at the microphone and said Patti was her "godmother." "You have become the benchmark for which singing is judged," Mariah said in a much clear voice than Prince,. "a headliner's headliner."

Lionsgate-Weinstein suit over Precious to seek mediation
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 08-Jun-2009, 5:49PM EDT
Both sides in a lawsuit pitting Lionsgate Films against The Weinstein Co. over the distribution of the film "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" will try to resolve the case with the help of a private mediator, attorneys told a judge today.
Nonetheless, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Coleman A. Swart scheduled trial of the lawsuit for Feb. 3, just in case the mediation effort fails.
Both companies filed lawsuits in Los Angeles and New York Feb. 4, claiming they had an agreement with producers to distribute the movie based on the story of a young, illiterate woman who is the victim of incest and trying to find her way in 1980s Harlem.
The film stars Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Gabourey Sidibe, who portrays Precious Jones, the central character in the film.
Lionsgate got to court first, suing Weinstein in Los Angeles just hours before TWC filed its suit against Lionsgate in New York. TWC also separately sued the agents for the producers, alleging fraud.
On May 6, a New York judge dismissed the Weinstein suit against Lionsgate. In doing so, he rejected Weinstein's claim that New York is the more appropriate location for the litigation to take place because most of the witnesses live there.
The judge said the parties "have a presence" in both New York and Los Angeles and frequently travel between both cities.
In its Los Angeles suit, Lionsgate is seeking a judge's ruling that it owns the rights to distribute "Push" in the United States and Canada.
Weinstein attorneys say the company had a firm agreement with the film's producers and that Lionsgate interfered.
But Lionsgate counters that the producers signed a written agreement stating they had no written or verbal agreement with Weinstein.

Mariah Carey, Other Stars Get Legs Insured
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 07-Jun-2009, 6:41AM EDT
Insuring women's legs against damage and destruction has been a very good policy for Lloyd's of London, which has insured more women's legs than any other body part. "The fad began with Betty Grable, whose legs were insured for one million dollars in the 1940s," Dian Hanson, an editor at Leg Show magazine, writes in "The Big Book of Legs," a coffee-table tome from Taschen. "Though it was simply a publicity stunt arranged by the 20th Century Fox film studio, it was quite an effective one, leading Universal to insure Angie Dickinson's legs for the same amount in the 1960s.
Since, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brooke Shields, Mary Hart, Heidi Klum and singers Tina Turner, Rihanna and Mariah Carey have all had their legs insured... Some would argue that Carey's money would be better spent insuring her voice, but from a Lloyd's perspective the legs are a better bet, as none of these women has ever attempted to collect."
New Mariah Song: "Obsessed"
Posted by Lynn on Saturday, 06-Jun-2009, 2:11AM EDT
We are able to confirm that "Obsessed" is a new song title from Mariah's forthcoming album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which is due out in stores later this year. So far, "Obsessed" and "Hate U" are the only known song titles from the new album and no information on the lead single is available currently. Another confirmed new Mariah song, "100 Percent" may be included only on the soundtrack for Precious.
As we all know, Mariah is hard at work on finishing up Memoirs. In speaking with Extra at the Fresh Air Fund gala on Thursday, June 4th, she has revealed that her new album will be about done in a week's time.

On Lee Daniels/Tennessee: Mariah: "I learned how to deal with him cracking the whip." Lee: "And I learned how to deal with her slinging her hair." Mariah: "No, I didn't sling my hair!" Lee: "Because she didn't sling her hair. Exactly."
Mariah: "We've been in this whole world when we just got back from Cannes for another film that we did together after 'Tennessee' called 'Precious' and we're just like in a frenzy of that so it feels like 'Tennessee' was so long ago." Lee: "I told her, I said that 'People are just thinking that you're really, really incredible in this character' and she goes [makes faces]." Mariah: "No, it does feel great to see some of the great reviews that I've been reading and..." Lee: "You deserve them, honey." Mariah: "Thank you, darling. Reddick Talks About Mariah in Tennessee
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 05-Jun-2009, 3:45PM EDT
Actor Lance Reddick ("Lost," "The Wire") talks to ABC News about his new film, Tennessee where he plays Mariah's abusive husband. Here's what Reddick had to say about working with Mariah.
What was it like working opposite Mariah Carey? "Mariah is great. One of the things I realized is that I walked into the situation with certain expectations given she's really a living icon, and all my expectations were blown. She was really sweet, really open, just really ready to do the work. And I think her performance was wonderful."
"I play her abusive husband. I did get to throw her up against the wall. I was actually intimidated because it was the first thing that I shot with her so basically I met Mariah Carey for the first time and then we were rehearsing this scene."
Mariah Carey Cares
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 05-Jun-2009, 2:47PM EDT
The Fresh Air Fund's annual spring gala at Tavern on the Green had a summery, sweet-days-of-youth vibe—and not just because of the baskets of red and pink carnations or the centerpieces assembled from Marshmallow Peeps and lollipops. By coincidence, there was a bona fide high school prom going on next door. "I saw those girls with corsages! I was wondering what the hell they were doing," Proenza Schouler's Lazaro Hernandez said. Catching a glimpse of Mariah Carey, a handful of giddy high schoolers struggled to contain themselves.
Carey's husband, Nick Cannon, had gone off to mingle. "Maybe when he comes back we'll go take a prom picture," she mused. In the meantime, the pop star (whose Camp Mariah hosts inner-city children) recalled the summer she got a scholarship to go to performing arts camp with "little rich kids who didn't quite understand why I only had, like, two outfits." Safe to assume that's not the case anymore.
"I support the Fresh Air Fund because I think it's one of the most important organizations, especially here in New York," she said. "To take kids, a lot of whom have never left their own city block and to make sure they get a chance to see the world outside of where they're confined. A lot of them can go off to learn, like my camp is a career-awareness camp, so I bring a lot of different people who have succeeded in different fields, who the kids can relate to, and they learn about different options they have."
Mariah Carey's husband, Nick Cannon, said he was pleased to learn that there was a Fresh Air Fund camp named after Mariah. "We went up there, took a visit, saw Camp Mariah," Cannon said. "So we are going to try to go up this summer. It's a beautiful thing."
Mariah on Whitney duet/Boyle breakdown

Superstar Mariah Carey tells "Extra" she's not the least bit surprised that Susan Boyle was freaked out by her newfound fame.
The five-time Grammy winner suffered from a physical and emotional breakdown in 2002, and she confesses, "I feel bad for her, but I think in this society we build people up so quickly now, of course it's going to freak some people out. It's difficult. It's got to be tough."
"Britain's Got Talent" megastar Susan Boyle became an overnight sensation, and the sudden fame got the best of her, leading to her stay in a mental health center earlier this week.
On Thursday night, Carey and hubby Nick Cannon attended the Fresh Air Fund's Annual Spring Gala, and Mimi revealed her summer plans will be spent in the studio "working, putting out an album."
Carey also dished about who she wants to record with again. Mariah says she welcomes the idea of working with Whitney Houston for another duet, saying, "I would love to." Back in 1999, Carey won an Oscar when the superstars combined forces for "When You Believe" from "The Prince of Egypt" soundtrack.
The Fresh Air Fund is a non-profit that provides free summer experiences for inner city kids in New York.
Pair of Brothers in a Grand Ole Soap Opry There are signs that Aaron Woodley, the director of "Tennessee," an earnest, increasingly preposterous road movie about unhealed family wounds and fraternal bonds, wanted to make a Terrence Malick film. In the early scenes of the movie, whose setting shifts from the desert outskirts of Albuquerque to Texas, Oklahoma and finally Tennessee, the camera studies the glowing Western sky at twilight as though determined to find a visionary beauty in desolate wasteland.
It is outside Albuquerque that Carter Armstrong (Adam Rothenberg), a cabdriver in his early 30s, lives a marginal existence in a trailer with his younger brother, Ellis (Ethan Peck, grandson of Gregory). Awkward flashbacks reveal that 15 years earlier the young Carter (Ryan Lynn), a high school football star, fled his childhood home in Knoxville, Tenn., dragging Ellis with him, after being terrorized by his drunken, abusive father, Roy (Bill Sage). Like his dad Carter is now a bitter alcoholic hothead itching for excuses to lash out at the world. But he is also fiercely protective of Ellis, who, as depicted in Russell Schaumburg's lumpy screenplay, is too angelic to be true.
The brothers' lives are uprooted when Ellis is found to have leukemia. After Carter proves incompatible as a bone marrow donor, he decides they must return to Knoxville to determine if their father would be a suitable candidate. At a Texas diner Ellis befriends Krystal Evans (Mariah Carey), a waitress and aspiring country singer-songwriter. When she offers to put them up for the night, they encounter her monstrous husband, Frank (Lance Reddick), a state trooper who loathes the brothers on sight and threatens Krystal's life if she touches one of them.
Seizing her opportunity to escape, she flees with them before dawn. On discovering her disappearance, Frank, convinced she has been kidnapped, gives chase.
Although the setup has its gripping moments, "Tennessee" collapses once the three stop in Nashville with Frank breathing down their necks. Although Ms. Carey makes a brave effort to put on a Texan accent, later in the movie she seems to have forgotten it, and there is nothing countrylike about her singing or the song with which she wows the audience in a Nashville talent competition. It isn't saying much, but at least her work here is more substantial than in the catastrophic "Glitter."
By this time Krystal has metamorphosed from goodhearted to gooey sweet. The story cedes its final shreds of credibility in a contrived scene where Frank, observing someone else's abused wife, miraculously sees the light and softens. From here on "Tennessee" wades hip-deep in mush.
Hollywood.com Says It may be small in scale, but 'Tennessee' is a rewarding and moving drama with exceptionally fine performances all around.
What's Good? Director Aaron Woodley is not afraid to let the budding relationship between these three travelers play out in real time. The film is slow-paced, but there is an ultimate payoff, and it's a rewarding one. Tennessee has the distinct feel of America's back roads and never feels false or contrived, a neat trick since the story is ripe for sentimental twists the filmmaker thankfully avoids like the plague.
What's Bad? It takes a while to get into the rhythms of these two very damaged brothers, but give Tennessee a chance, and it all kicks in, especially with the welcome introduction of Carey's character. The actors bring it home. Only Lance Reddick as Frank, her crummy hubby, comes off as one-dimensional.
Favorite Scene? Carey does a splendid job on an original song, "Right to Dream," in the small Nashville club where she gets a chance to sing. Key to the scene's believability is that we see her as Krystal, a small-town aspiring performer, and not superstar Mariah Carey when she's up there on stage.
Netflix or Multiplex? Like many independently-made dramas, this one will struggle to stay afloat in theaters. Hopefully, it will have a strong afterlife on DVD, where many more people will happily discover that Mariah can actually act!
Mariah has come a long way since 'Glitter' The little indie "Tennessee" squeezes super-celeb diva Mariah Carey into the humble role of Texas truck stop waitress.
It's a fairly meaty role (pardon the pun - she added weight for the part) and Carey does some surprisingly subtle work. She doesn't pick up a guitar and croon until the end of the movie, and even then, it's not the same gal you saw in "Glitter."
Carey plays Krystal, stuck in a dead-end job and oppressive marriage, who decides to skip town with a couple of brothers on their way to Nashville, where she'd like to start over as a singer.
The trio is pursued by Krystal's abusive husband (Lance Reddick), a down-tempo chase drama that's woven with the story of the brothers' own desperate pilgrimage.
Carter (Adam Rothenberg) is ferrying his desperately ill sibling (Ethan Peck) to Tennessee, hoping to find their estranged father, who may be able to provide life-saving bone marrow.
Road movies are known for their strange bedfellows, but there's something irreconcilable about Krystal's Nashville dream and the brothers' desperate medical situation (the scenario didn't work any better in "Boys on the Side.")
Sometimes, each actor appears to be in his/her own movie, especially Rothenberg, whose Carter is a lumpen, inexpressive brooder.
"Tennessee" is occasionally a chore to sit through, but it does yield some third-act rewards for patient viewers, as the characters' willingness to sacrifice for the other is suddenly brought into sharp focus.
As for Carey's inevitable journey to the microphone, well, I'll admit that I'm not a fan, but her song "I've Got a Right to Dream" which she co-wrote with Willie Nelson, ain't half bad.
Neither's the movie, if you can make it all the way to Tennessee.
Three outcasts hit the road. At the Sunshine (1:39). R: violence, language.
Who's the luckiest man in Mariah Carey's life right now? Nope, not Nick Cannon. It's Aaron Woodley, who somehow snagged the songbird for his downbeat drama. Granted, Carey probably came cheap, given her failure in films like "Glitter." But she's actually the best thing about this formulaic indie, in which two brothers (Adam Rothenberg, Ethan Peck) help her sad-eyed waitress escape a violent husband (Lance Reddick). The good news for Carey is that she gets to prove she's a pretty decent actress after all. The bad news, of course, is that she's done it in a movie no one has any other reason to see.
Mariah Carey isn't the star of Aaron Woodley's film. In fact, she's only on screen for maybe a third of its running time, and a few minutes of that is spent singing, a sentimental number that rather reductively defines her character, Krystal, a diner waitress and aspiring artist seeking escape from her abusive state trooper husband (Lance Reddick).
Even up against such odds, Carey remains the movie's most compelling figure, her performance nuanced and generous. The ostensible focus is the story of two brothers, Carter (Adam Rothenberg) and Ellis (Ethan Peck), coming to terms with the legacy of their own abusive father (Bill Sage), as well as their own resentments and losses. Impelled by a medical emergency (Ellis has cancer and they hope dad will be a bone marrow match), the boys are headed back to Tennessee after many years away when they meet Krystal; the ensuing road trip features predictable confrontations, flashbacks and revelations, as the brothers bicker and bond, finding themselves as they sift through pieces of their past.
The light is perpetually filtered, the tones golden, and even the most run-down settings are also, somehow, gorgeous. Amid the banality, however heartfelt, Carey is a welcome surprise.
Mariah: Grammy Deadline Looms
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 02-Jun-2009, 4:58PM EDT
The Grammy deadline is August 31st. That's a month earlier than usual because the Grammy Awards are a week earlier this year, on January 31, 2010.
Mariah Carey is buzzing away in the studio for her new CD, called "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel." She's been working with The-Dream and other producers putting together another collection of catchy pop songs. But will she be ready by August 31st? It doesn't seem possible. But don't count her out. Mariah tells me, "I feel it's a special album and I want it to have a shot."
P.S. As I told you during the early days of this new column, Mariah is also working with Jermaine Dupri on a theme song for Lee Daniels' great movie, "Precious." It's set to be called "100 Percent." At least Mariah will make the Oscar deadline!

MDJ Special: Your Favorite Mariah Moments Part II
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 01-Jun-2009, 7:56AM EDT
MariahDaily.com concludes its 11th-year Anniversary celebration with the final set of your favorite Mariah moments. Thank you once again for your loyalty and continued support of Mariah and the site. And here's hoping for more years of MariahDaily.com!
"Close My Eyes" on The Rosie O'Donnell Show, 1998 JANEL - I have been a Mariah fan since 1990. I have collected many things and have always loved her music. It has been like my life story. I was able to meet Mariah a few times and the very first time I saw her in concert was December 1993 in Philadelphia for the Music Box tour! One of my favorite performances was When she sang Close My Eyes on Rosie and her performance on Saturday Night Live. That was also the first time I met her. She was so kind and I spent over an hour with her! It was true and genuine. Mariah is amazing and one of a kind! There are way too many events to pick from. Mariah has always been kind to me and she is amazing.
VH1 Special: "What It's Like: Mariah Around The World", 2002 DEREK - This is Derek from China. One of my favorite MC moments has to be the Mariah VH1 special where she sang with the piano man at that Italian hotel club. She was so free and funny yet sounds perfect singing those ad-libs and then the interactions with the two ladies there... that's why I love her so much and I can watch that whole special over and over again and it still brings a smile on my face.
Billboard's Artist of the Decade Acceptance Speech, 1999 CAN - This is one of my favorite Mariah moments ever as it was more like a declaration of freedom and an outburst than a typical award show speech giving every lamb and everyone out there goosebumps everytime they listen to it. Why it has made such an effect on us I think is because of the way she stood up for herself and her deserved freedom which of course disturbed some people in that time. As she told people to forget about everyhing (ensembles, short skirts, big hair, whatever!) but focus on the success that no one has ever been able to top yet and owing this to fans with their unmatched support, this made its place in history as the ultimate "proud to be a lamb" moment.
RAD - Hey! My favorite Mariah moment ever is her Artist of the Decade acceptance speech! She was so real and so honest... I really loved this part of her career!
DANIELLE - My fave moment is when she gives her speech when she receives her Artist of the Decade award. Very touching. Lil emotion, lil emotion!
American Music Award Acceptance Speech 2000 YANN - One of my favorites is the acceptance speech at American Music Awards 2000 with Olivia Newton-John when Mariah gave a big moment to these two little girls who made their wishes. That showed the simplicity and the generosity of Mariah, that was a TRUE MOMENT!
MTV Cribs, 2002 CHARICEA - My favorite Mimi moment is when she was on Cribs, and she got to the kitchen and Jack and Willie were fighting. Jack jumped up and bit the cat's tail, pulling him down literally. I was trippin', that was so hilarious. I laughed for hours. Jack, he's such a cute dog. I wish I could be there to see Jack and Willie fight everyday. Mariah kept trying to separate them to keep them from playing. It looked more like they were fighting, I don't know, it was just funny though. LOL.
The Oprah Winfrey Show, 2002 SHILOH - My favorite televised Mariah moment would have to be during Oprah 2002. I met Mariah in Chicago, at a Meet and Greet, in October 2002. As a gift, I gave her a butterfly necklace. When I tuned into Oprah for her appearance, I saw that Mariah was actually wearing the necklace I bought her. I was deeply touched and happy that she liked my gift enough to wear it on national television!
BET Christmas Special, 2001 ART - I have been a true and solid follower of this site since it started. It's made me have a close connection and it has been a part of my everyday life; without it I would not feel connected to our idol Mariah, and for that I am entirely grateful to everyone who makes this site such an amazing place to visit. One of the best memories I have had about Mariah and MariahDaily was the thorough update on the Christmas Special she did for BET in 2001. It was very soon after the bad publicity of Glitter, and Mariah had begun to overcome all the obstacles of the media. She wore a red dress and performed One Sweet Day with Boys II Men as well as other Christmas songs. Mariah also sent me a personalized note that night!
Fantasy Live at Madison Square Garden, 1995 DANNY - It's hard to choose just one favorite Mariah moment, but if I had to pick the one concert I've watched more than any other it would be the 1995 "Fantasy" special at Madison Square Garden. At the very beginning you only hear Mariah doing some incredible falsetto runs as the crowd goes wild, and then the camera pans up from behind her with spotlights surrounding her on every angle. Then performance after performance, she delivers her best live vocals combined with the most energetic and enthusiastic stage presence. Even though Mariah was going through difficult personal times that year, she looked so free and vibrant, and channeled the crowd's energy to put on the best show she could. In some ways, I feel this was her first emancipating moment because it was a fun side of Mariah that was rarely seen. I think it was also the first time the world realized Mariah was not just a girl who could sing big ballads, but also a great performer who could sell out stadiums.
Kapil's video of favorite Mariah moments KAPIL - I know you asked for our favorite individual moments, but this is a video I made a while back entitled "The Moments Of Mimi" that combines some of my favorite MC moments from her start to The Emancipation of Mimi era.
We would also like to announce the winner of our Anniversary Twitter contest. @danielleMCC327 has been randomly selected as the lucky @MariahDaily follower to win a signed Mariah item. Danielle, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your mailing address. Congratulations!
