'Love You Long Time' - Is The Phrase Empowering Or Insensitive?
Posted by Lynn on Wednesday, 30-Jul-2008, 10:01PM EDT
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon -- that's lovin' you short time, so far. "Lovin' You Long Time" well, that's another story (and Mariah's latest single).
But how is she using the line? And why are so many other multi-culti female singers using a phrase that some consider to be a racial and/or sexist slur? Can the meaning change over time, depending on who is using it and why?
"That phrase is so loaded," said performance artist Allison Roh Park. "People don't understand the history behind that."
"Me love you long time" -- how the phrase is typically quoted -- came into prominence with Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket," as a Vietnamese prostitute tries to pick up Matthew Modine's character with broken English. The phrase was then popularly picked up by 2 Live Crew in the song "Me So Horny."
"From that point on, it became a hook," says Ryan Suda, who runs clothing company Black Lava.
"It's so many different kinds of slurs in one," said comedian Margaret Cho. "It's instantly putting you in the position of being a foreigner, an outsider and a sexual stereotype. It's an all-in-one combo."
"Asian women get exotified and hyper-sexualized to the point where it really affects our day-to-day life," Park said.
"A lot of times when people use phrases like that, they neglect the background," Suda said. "Like sex trafficking. So if a guy goes up to someone in a bar, and he's using that phrase, and he's imaging that scene for some reason, I'm sure they mean it as a fun thing. I don't think they mean it to be malicious. They know she's not a prostitute. But it's attached to that. It's a lot more than a simple phrase."
But even musicians who lifted the phrase from 2 Live Crew didn't always know they got it from a depiction of a prostitute's pickup line and sometimes wrongly assumed the rappers had coined the phrase all on their own -- and were therefore ignorant of the connotations.
"I first heard it in the 2 Live Crew song," said Fergie, who used the phrase in her song "London Bridge." "And then I was watching 'Full Metal Jacket,' and I'm going, 'Ohhhhhh! That's where 2 Live Crew got it. OK.' But back in the day, everybody would be saying that."
And they still do -- you hear it in jokes on "Family Guy" and "40-Year-Old Virgin" -- but the context keeps changing.
"'Love you long time' comes out of a fairly stereotypical situation, and it's recycled itself back into the culture," said playwright David Henry Hwang. "Now it's being used as an empowerment phrase, like to deny it -- 'I won't love you long time' -- or women who take the phrase and use it to assert themselves."
That's what Nelly Furtado was aiming to do when she put the phrase in her song "Maneater."
"That's such a weird song," she said. "It came from this cool, dark, powerful place which all women possess. I guess I just took that and ran with it, because that phrase just came to mind. 'Love you long time' -- it just seemed powerful for a woman to possess that much energy. All she has to say is four little words and she's got everybody eating out of the palm of her hand."
Mariah Carey didn't just refer to the oft-quoted line -- she built a whole song around it. But she corrects the grammar, so the connotation changes. "Female artists like to play with words," Furtado said. "Missy Elliott did that quite well with 'bitch.' She started saying, 'She's a bitch, I'm a bitch.' And she owned the word. Women should be grateful to her for that. She's a modern-day feminist."
"It's just one of those sayings that's kind of pushed its way into our slang and our vocabulary," Fergie said. "I think it's just part of pop culture now."
There's a clothing line in London called "Love You Long Time" (fashion designer Katy Horwood counts Vanessa Carlton as one of her clients), but to counteract any possible negative interpretation of the use of the phrase in fashion, Suda's Black Lava clothing line sells a shirt that reads "I Will Not Love You Long Time."
"It's definitely one of the more popular shirts, by far," Suda said. "People, when they see it, they just laugh, like, 'Oh my god, I get this all the time! Guys come up to me in bars and they always say this line to me.'"
"I was walking down the street and this guy yells from his car, 'Love you long time, me love you long time,' " Cho related. "And I was so horrified. Of course he's talking to me, to the Asian woman walking down the street. And he left.
"I don't mind it when it's used in songs, like when women use it," Cho continued. "Fergie uses it, that doesn't bother me. But when it's shouted in the street and they don't wait to hear the response? What if I was actually going to go, 'Oh, OK'? They never stick around to hear the answer."

Buzzing with the Queen Bee
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 27-Jul-2008, 2:29PM EDT
Taken from Westlife's autobiography, Our Story, released on June 16, 2008. Mark Feehily tells his story of meeting Mariah for the first time.
Buzzing with the Queen Bee "A few weeks later we were in a hotel in South East Asia on a promotional trip, when the door to my room burst open and the rest of the band tumbled in, laughing, shouting, waving and saying, 'Mark! Mark! We're going to do a song with Mariah Carey!' I think they were almost as excited for me as I was myself, which was really nice. They knew how much it meant to me. I don't know how to describe the excitement at hearing that news. It was unreal.
We all knew how much Mark had wanted to meet Mariah properly, says Nicky. We knew he had met her previously, albeit briefly. So when we heard about the song with her, we were bursting to tell him. Kian took the call from Louis and I have to admit my exact words when he told me were 'F*** off, no way!' It was to be 'Against All Odds', the Phil Collins track, and it would eventually give us our sixth numer 1 in 17 months. What's more, we were pencilled in to record the single and video with Mariah in Capri, an island just off Italy. We had a tiny window of 48 hours to record the single, shoot the video and get it all done.
Kian lost his passport. I felt really sorry for him, because he ended up shooting his parts of the video on his own. Mariah had shot hers on her own, mind you, then we had gone and done our clips, but because Kian wasn't there, they'd filmed shots of us separately and then spliced it all in later. There were shots of a car with 'Kian' in it, but they were from a distance and cleverly done to hide the fact he wasn't actually there yet and was still desperately trying to get his passport sorted.
We were to have dinner with Mariah in a beautiful Italian restaurant in the most amazing location and we all got there nice and early. The sense of anticipation among the lads was huge. Then suddenly, there she was, like the Queen Bee, gliding in wearing a flowing chiffon outfit. I don't even think her feet were touching the floor, she was gliding that much. It was a real spectacle and obviously everyone in the restaurant was staring at her. She just had that presence. She was probably giving it some for effect, but she definitely had a colossal X factor.
We all sat don and I was trying to eat my pasta but it was just too weird, sitting round a table eating dinner with Mariah Carey. Every now and then I'd relax and chat to one of the lads, then I'd turn my head and think, Holy s***! That's Mariah Carey! She was surrounded by 'her people,' but actually they kept a distance and let us chat happily with her. I have to say, once we'd got over our nerves, she was an absolute pleasure to talk to. She wasn't at all like the demanding diva you read about in the tabloids.
We shared a beer and had a bit of craic and I even remember, for some reason, that the food was sensational. It was very hard to really be yourself, though. I kept trying to open up and even tell a few jokes, but in the end, I thought, The less said, the better. You don't want to ruin the night. You don't want Mariah Carey to think you're a knob. We hadn't recorded the song at this point, so I think we were all on tenterhooks in case she came away from that meal and said she didn't want to work with us. But that didn't happen, she said she loved our company and I thought she made a huge effort.
Obviously, the best part for me, recounts Mark, was singing with Mariah in the studio. I kept thinking back to when I was a kid listening to 'Hero' and all those other great vocals, then pinching myself because I couldn't believe that I was in a studio in Capri with her in person. What's more, she was basically producing us. She had her engineers and all that, but she was sitting behind the desk using the faders and the talk back, telling us to do another take and giving me guidance on a few points. It was incredible.
And, of course, hearing that voice in person so close was a dream come true."

Fan Ronnie Bettis Interviews His Idol
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 25-Jul-2008, 1:06AM EDT
Backstage at BET's 106 & Park Wednesday night, Ronnie Bettis got the dream of a lifetime meeting his number one idol Mariah Carey. Ronnie was chosen to be a reporter to interview Mariah for "BET On Blast."
Ronnie Bettis: Which song from the new album are you most excited to perform in your upcoming tour? Mariah Carey: I don't know. Do you have a favorite? RB: I love all your songs. Every single song on your new album especially 'I Wish You Well.' MC: You do? I was gonna say 'I Wish You Well' but that, I'm excited to perform that so I'm gonna go with what you like.
RB: If you had the choice to collaborate with any musician, dead or alive, which musician would you choose? MC: I have to go with Stevie Wonder because he's my favorite all-time artist. It's intimidating to think about working with him but we always talk about it. We discussed doing something and that's probably gonna happen soon. I'll have to just get up the nerve to do that because he's so incredible that to me it's like I'm just a fan so when I go to attempt to work with him, I'm gonna be approaching it as a fan. But I'm gonna say Stevie. RB: Which song of yours inspires you the most when you're not feeling festive? MC: I don't know. I have some uplifting songs, to perform or just to hear?
RB: In general, to perform or just hear. MC: I'm gonna go with, we've been hearing 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time' on the radio, you like that one? RB: Yes. I love 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time.' MC: Well, I love 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time' too so I'm gonna go with that one for this period of time. Back in the day, I would say, oh also 'Touch My Body' is festive, but I'll go with 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time' for right now and for a big throwback, I would say 'Fantasy' 'cause that's happy. The ODB version. [Rest in peace, ODB]
RB: I know you've done this in previous tours, are you considering letting the fans possibly choose some songs for you to perform? MC: Do you think that's a good idea? RB: I love any idea you do but... MC: You have to go with, 'Whatever type of idea.' I'm joking, I'm joking. That was...in reference to Coming To America to anyone who didn't get it. I loved when, I think that was the Charmbracelet Tour that we did that on. And that was really nice because the band learned a bunch of different things and we would just mix it up but I'm thinking that that might be something we're gonna try. I'm putting the tour concepts now so it could be nice to have the fans involved. It's always a beautiful thing so yeah.
RB: I recently saw you in your film Tennessee. I thought you were amazing, you shined in it. Are you planning on doing any upcoming films, possibly in the future? MC: I'm not supposed to talk about this but I will be, I don't know, can I say it? Am I supposed to talk about it? You will be seeing me in another Lee Daniels' production very soon, part of an ensemble. I don't wanna go too much into it. Some people in this room already know what I'm talking about but I won't say anything because it's like a surprise-kind-of-thing but it's an honor, it was a real honor that Lee chose to put me in that movie because the script is phenomenal. It comes from a book that is phenomenal so let me not give too much away but that's happening soon.

Mariah Inspires An 'Amazing, Incredible Moment' For One MTV News Staffer
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 24-Jul-2008, 12:11PM EDT
By Kristin Grimmett
Yesterday afternoon, while John Norris was interviewing Mariah Carey in the greenroom after "TRL," I was in shock because I was able to attend. I was trying to get my eyes to adjust to the ice on her finger & wrist (which was pretty fantastic), when John asked how she felt about Barack Obama having a shot at the presidency. Being that I'm of mixed heritage as well, I perked up to hear her answer -- and I was in for a surprise.
First of all, you need to know that when John asks an artist a question, 10 times out of 10, the answer is about them-- even if the question is about someone else. So when John asked about Obama, I was not expecting Mariah to turn her head, look directly at me and say, "I have another biracial partner in this room right here, and we met on an MTV moment. I know I'm not directly [answering the question], but can we discuss this?"
As my face flushed, the camera turned to me, and John put the microphone in my face. What was going on? This does not happen.
"Can you tell us?" she asked. "Can you explain how we met and how we connected?"
I was so embarrassed and I said so, not because Mariah asked me a question, but because everyone was suddenly staring at me.
"Why is it embarrassing?" she asked me.
Um, maybe because Mariah is supposed to be the focus of the interview, not me! But I put my game face on and told the story of how we met.
I began to rattle on -- at a very accelerated speed, I might add -- about how we met on MTV's "Shining Through the Rain" special back in 2002 when I was given the chance to interview her. I cried, she cried, we all cried. Hugs were given and a weight was lifted off of my chest because I was finally able to tell Mariah how she changed my life. She helped me to see the beauty of being mixed and how I could "make it through the rain" regardless of those trying to bring me down in my small town. Trying not to cry, yet again, I explained that ever since that moment, she has never forgotten me, always included me on events and made a point of making me feel special at every turn. A diva? Maybe for those tabloid stories. For me? Just an amazingly real woman who can make you feel love with every smile and embrace.
I continued on about my journey to get where I'm at now. I have a job here at MTV News and couldn't be happier. I had realized that I could do whatever I wanted and told her it was all because of her.
"Yeah!" Mariah said to me. "Look at that success story! Darling, it's because of you."
Then she turned back to John and said, "The point is, there's a lot of us [with biracial backgrounds]. It was difficult for me growing up to have someone where I could say, 'I look up to this person, I fully relate to this person,' and I felt like an outcast, an outsider." So Barack Obama having a shot at the White House, she said, "couldn't be more exciting to me. It's an amazing, incredible moment."
As far as Mariah goes, I'll be lovin' her long time. And it was an incredible moment for me too.

Mariah Carey Plans 'Elaborate' Tour; Hopes For End To VMA Losing Streak, Rocky-Marriage Rumors
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 24-Jul-2008, 9:01AM EDT
'I'm ecstatic, so be ecstatic with me!' singer says in response to talk of trouble with husband Nick Cannon.
It's not unusual for newlyweds to hole up together during their first year of marriage. But when you're Mrs. Nick Cannon and you also have an album to promote, that means tour, tour, tour - or at least perform at a lot of awards shows and then tour.
"We're looking at November right now," Mariah Carey said when asked when her next tour, in support of E=MC2, would kick off. "Please don't hold me accountable if it turns out to be December 5 or December 7 or January 18!"
What does Mariah want to do this time around? After all, her Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour was quite elaborate with nine costume changes.
"I'm thinking elaborate," she said. "I like elaborate. We only do substantial. That's what my jeweler says. I haven't gotten the looks in mind just yet, but we're going to figure it out soon enough."
So far, Carey's only slated performances are at the Teen Choice Awards on August 4 and Fashion Rocks on September 5 (airing September 9). No word yet on the VMAs, but Carey is hoping to at least attend - and to win, for once. "I don't own a Moonman [from] this country," she said. "Isn't that an abusive situation?"
Carey has two Moonmen from MTV Japan, for the International Video Icon Award in 2005 and for the Video Vanguard Award in 2008. But in America, she's Susan Lucci - a perpetual nominee, but never a winner. She's hoping this year will be different, as her fans are currently waging a campaign to get her clip for "Touch My Body" nominated for Best Female Video.
"I have faith in my fans," she said. "I believe they will come through for me, because they always have. My house is not complete without an American Moonman, and I would say 'Touch My Body' deserves one. Brett Ratner directed it, I have a unicorn in there, I have ['Guitar Hero'] in there - who else has that?"
Even if she doesn't win, she'd be happy just to attend. "I haven't really gone, I've only performed," Carey pointed out, noting that she appeared in 1998 with Whitney Houston and again in 2005 to perform via satellite from Miami. And despite Carey's commitment to perform just two days earlier in New York at Fashion Rocks, "I will make it this year" to the Los Angeles ceremony on September 7, she promised.
Still, no offense to MTV, a Moonman wouldn't mean quite the same thing as her Teen Choice surfboard. That's because when she won Choice Love Song for "We Belong Together" in 2005, she first met Cannon, who presented the award to her with a kiss. Though they would later talk of their whirlwind romance as being love at first sight, the truth is, the couple have known each other for several years.
"I still have the award to prove it," Carey said. "I keep it in my mermaid room, which is inspired by the ocean. And every time I look over there, it's like, 'There's the first time we had the moment.' "
Carey debunked rumors that their relationship is on the rocks. "It's good," she gushed. "Life is beautiful, and things are going well."
When she hears talk that "things are rocky and hazy and messed up," she stops to wonder why. "I'm like, 'Why would we have gotten married to do that?' " she said. "People are going to say what they say, but what would be the purpose? I guess other people do those things for a purpose, but I don't know. I'm ecstatic, so be ecstatic with me! Be happy with me. Can we celebrate?"

I'm a fan so I'm just a little, I get a little bit star-struck."
They discussed their favorite songs. Mariah liked The Dream song. Clue said his favorite E=MC² song is "Migrate," "I gravitate towards the song because it's just like a different sound for you that I haven't heard from you before. It's like 2010 MC. It's a different style for you." "It's a fan favorite," Mariah claimed. "I do enjoy that song. It's my first time working with Danja so it's one of my favorites as well."

Mariah's New Gig?
Posted by Lynn on Sunday, 20-Jul-2008, 6:44PM EDT
Mariah is going Hollywood - as in Planet Hollywood! Mariah is in hush-hush talks to become a permanent headliner at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, which could score her $100 million for a three-year commitment, an insider tells Star. "Mariah is one of the most popular performers around," the insider adds. "She could easily become Queen of the Las Vegas strip!" And Mariah's new husband, Nick Cannon, is all for the idea. "Nick loves Vegas," the insider says. "Maybe he could even be Mariah's opening act!"
Note: The contract offer, according to a Planet Hollywood source, would be for 5 nights a week for 3 years and worth $100 million. Mariah has not accepted and they are apparently still in negotiations.

Mariah is the equivalent of showbusiness royalty, and although her manner is relaxed it's obvious that she likes things done in a particular way. The left side of the limo is hers, she tells me, because she prefers to be seen from the right side.
Mariah may be a diva, but she is no prima donna. She has just finished 12 hours of TV interviews that ran way over schedule. And even though she has had barely three hours of sleep. she is now on her way to oversee the editing of a TV special.

On paper, Mariah carey is the modern-day fairytale princess who had it all. Mini-series are written about people like her; she's the real-life Danielle Steele heroine who came from nothing to conquer evil.
As the biggest-selling female recording artist of the '90s her bank balance stands at $300 million. She has sold 80 million records worldwide and her Disney-esque rags to riches rise from the drug and vice-riddled streets of New York has become legend.

The best-selling female vocalist of the decade, Mariah Carey - the singer talks about enjoying the freedom of a new, single life in her Manhattan townhouse.

HQ Photos: Mariah at Disney World

Below are pictures of Mariah and Nick Cannon with Mickey & Minnie Mouse at the Walt Disney World's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on Tuesday, July 15, 2008.
How did newlyweds Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon cap off two romantic weeks together in the Bahamas? They went to Disney World, of course!
The famous lovebirds spent Tuesday enjoying the Florida theme parks' wild rides, including the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, the famous indoor coaster Space Mountain (Nick's favorite ride), and the stomach-plunging Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (Mariah's favorite.)
They also met up with the another power couple -- the biggest in all of Disney World -- Mickey and Miney Mouse! The dynamic duos mugged for photos at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, and Mariah really got into the spirit of things by wearing "Tinker Bell" earrings and a designer t-shirt depicting Mickey and Miney sharing a smooch.
She and Nick planned to top off their fun by taking in the "Wishes" fireworks show set to the backdrop of the Magic Kingdom's iconic Cinderella Caste.

Additional performers and presenters to be announced.
With her unique talent and signature vocal abilities, Mariah Carey commanded the world's attention when she made her musical debut. Since then, Carey has emerged as one of the most popular and widely acclaimed talents in music. As a singer and songwriter, Carey has been recognized with the most prestigious accolades in the industry including two Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" Award and the World Music Award for "World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium." As the best-selling female performer of all time, Mariah Carey has continuously raised the bar and set the standard of excellence within the music industry.
Throughout her career, Carey has smashed recording industry records, and she recently reached another historic career achievement. "Touch My Body," the lead single from her album, E=MC, became her 18th No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. As a result, she has surpassed one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard history: Elvis Presley's 17 No. 1 singles. "Touch My Body" spent two weeks at the top of the charts and marked Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at No. 1. This tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at No. 1 (as calculated in Billboard). Additionally, Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 No. 1 hits.
NOTE: The Teen Choice 2008 Awards will be staged at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City Walk, Los Angeles, California on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at 5:00pm. For tickets, go to Ticketmaster. In the meantime, let's not forget to vote for Mariah for the Choice Music: Female Artist and Choice Music R&B Track (for "Bye Bye") awards. Voting ends August 1st!
I realize why I've disliked Mariah Carey up to this point. Her five octave trills, skimpy gear, and primping and prancing for the camera have always come off as showy and insincere. Insecure people almost always overcompensate.
Now I'm having a great time tripping down memory lane with a woman I thought was a Diva with a capital D. "A diva can be a kind of cool, fun thing to be," says Mariah, seeming to consider the possibilities, "but it also has a connotation of being difficult." A bitch, I clarify. "Exactly," she says, nodding her head, "and that couldn't be more opposite of who I am."
She may not be a diva, but she's definitely in control. "I'm under enormous pressure because the creative stuff -- nobody can do that for me. I don't trust anybody to do it the way I want." She's not complainng. That's the way Mariah likes it. READ MORE»

The Nail Diva

Celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippman has worked closely with Mariah on countless projects, including both print and video shoots as well as for personal occasions. Mariah and Lippman have been known to change nail color as many as four times during one event to complement each wardrobe change. Lippman tells Karen Bressler of TalentNetworks her interesting stories working with Mariah:
Deborah Lippman: "I've worked with Sarah Jessica Parker, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, Martha Stewart, Julia Roberts. I work with Mariah Carey a lot. She was going to sing a duet at the Oscars with Whitney Houston and I created a color for her called Satin Doll (opaque flesh pinky beige with silver running through it). It was very pretty for evening yet soft enough to wear in the day time. She loved it. A couple of years ago, she was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live and wanted red nails but the outfit she was wearing eight or nine minutes later needed a sheer color. I was up to it if she was and it happens that she was talented enough to walk on stage with wet nails and not mess them up. There were a lot of closeups of her holding the microphone and we both got calls the next day about her nails. Another time she was in a diva concert and we changed her nails four times in a short period of time in a shaky trailer. Every time someone took a step, the trailer rocked. We were laughing pretty hard."

"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" REMIX Contest
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 11-Jul-2008, 8:57PM EDT
Professionals and amateurs alike will have the chance to remix the third single from Mariah Carey's platinum-plus album "E=MC2" via a contest hosted on a startup social network Web site for musicians, Billboard has learned.
Starting July 15, the complete stems of "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time," from Carey's Island release, will be made available to the members of Indaba Music, an online community for aspiring and established producers and artists.
"Mariah is the queen of the remix," manager Mark Sudack says, citing the pop star's work with dance producers like David Morales -- for whom she resang the vocals of 1993's "Dreamlover" -- and Junior Vasquez, as well as hip-hop greats like Sean "Diddy" Combs, DJ Clue, Ol' Dirty Bastard and the Lox. "This contest is a way for her to continue being a pioneer in the remix world, potentially finding a new sound, a new power, a new energy in the online space, as opposed to just the go-to producers of the moment."
The contest involves elements of fan voting, user-generated content and social networking. Entrants must join Indaba by creating a profile and can then download the song stems, work on their mix and submit it via the site by August 26. The Indaba community will pick its 10 favorite mixes via online voting. Three judges -- including Sudack, who co-executive-produced "E=MC2" -- will then select the winner. The producer of the winning mix will receive $5,000, be designated as Carey's No. 1 MySpace friend for four weeks and possibly have his or her work released.
The contest is more than just a unique way to promote the single, according to Sudack. "It's a marketing tool as much as it is a contest," he says. "But nowadays all you need is a laptop and a drum machine, and you have all the equipment that you need to go and make something that's hot and sounds special. There's so much potential talent out there that's untapped. You could have the next Jermaine Dupri sitting in a room somewhere, and he's got all the talent and all this genius with just no options to connect the dots."

Remember to vote for Mariah once a day for the Choice Music: Female Artist and Choice Music R&B Track (for "Bye Bye") awards at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards. Voting ends August 1st.
"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" Mediabase airplay as of week ending July 10, 2008: 16.414 million audience impressions with 2424 spins (Urban - 810, Pop - 761, Rhythmic - 760, Urban A/C - 61, Alternative - 5).

Radio 1's resident film critic, James King, evaluates the 10 Worst Musician Actors on this month's "The Q List" in UK's Q music magazine. The Top 10 are Phil Collins (Buster), Sting (Dune), Ice-T (Tank Girl), 50 Cent (Get Rich or Die Tryin'), All Saints (Honest), Madonna (Body of Evidence), Britney Spears (Crossroads), Roger Daltrey (Buddy's Song), Mariah Carey (Glitter), and Spice Girls (Spiceworld). Here's what King has to say about Mariah:
Glitter put Carey at the centre of a camp fantasy about a rags-to-riches singer. Released in US cinemas soon after the World Trade Centre terrorist attacks, it sank without trace. JK: "This is the standard for bad pop films. I actually own it, and it has become a bit of a cult film because it's so camp. The worrying thing is that Mariah Carey can't even play her own life story. She's trying too hard to be a serious actor and she just doesn't cut it."
"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" has premiered on Italian radio, Radio Dimensione Suono (RDS), and is currently at #1 on the RDS Web Chart. Keep voting for the song here!

"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" Out in UK September 1st
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 10-Jul-2008, 5:47PM EDT
Mariah is moving swiftly on to single number three from her generally very impressive E=MC2 album.
It's called 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time' and it ticks all the boxes for a modern-day Mariah smash. Mid-tempo R&B beat? Check. Gushingly romantic lyrics? You betcha. Guest appearance from a trendy rapper? Yup, here's T.I. for ya! And she's nice and restrained with the old vocals too.
Original it ain't, but 'Long Time' does have that touch of class that 'Bye Bye' seemed to lack. It's also got a definite Kanye West feel to it, which makes sense seeing as it was co-produced by DJ Toomp, who contributed to West's Graduation album. The UK release date is September 1.

"As someone who is notoriously late for appointments and dinners (I have shamelessly made dates wait for hours while I perused sample sale racks), it would be hypocritical of me to scoff at Mariah Carey's multiple-hour tardiness when meeting with ELLE editors for the interview and photoshoot in the August issue. But there is nothing like the ultimate diva to remind us that we are mere peons in a world that is ruled by superstars of her ilk. As we run amok in our own harried fashion industry schedules, it's fun to imagine the life of a five-time Grammy winning songstress--because who among us hasn't sung one of her hits in the shower? Don't miss our exclusive interview and photo shoot with the one and only Mimi." --Rachael Nichol, Associate Fashion and Beauty Editor, ELLE.com

"Fantasy" on VIBE's The Ultimate 90
Posted by Lynn on Tuesday, 08-Jul-2008, 3:53PM EDT
Hip-hop's best "Bonnie & Clyde" tracks are featured on V Mixtape: The Ultimate 90 in the latest VIBE magazine. Method Man's "I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need To Get" feat. Mary J. Blige takes the top spot with Mariah's "Fantasy" feat. ODB and Jay-Z's "03 Bonnie & Clyde" feat. Beyonce, both coming in at #2. See full list below.
The Ultimate 90: "Bonnie & Clyde" A true Bonnie & Clyde joint is easy to spot: a perfect combination of the sweet and the sour, the fierce and the femme, the light and the dark. When R&B mingles with rap, both sides win. These jams recall an old adage: Sometimes it takes two to make a thing go right.
MARIAH CAREY FEAT. OL' DIRTY BASTARD "Fantasy" from Daydream (Columbia, 1995) ODB's raucous rhymes ("Me and Mariah") and mind-boggling energy are a perfect contrast to Mariah's pretty-chick cooing. Still as cool as a waterslide ride on a summer's day.
1. Method Man ft. Mary J. Blige "I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need To..." 2. Mariah Carey ft. Ol' Dirty Bastard "Fantasy" Jay-Z ft. Beyonce "03 Bonnie & Clyde" 3. LL Cool J ft. Jennifer Lopez "All I Have" Janet Jackson ft. Q-Tip and Joni Mitchell "Got 'Til It's Gone" 4. Wyclef Jean ft. Claudette Ortiz "Two Wrongs" 5. Diddy ft. Keyshia Cole "Last Night" 6. Ciara ft. 50 Cent "Can't Leave 'Em Alone" Cuban Link ft. Mya "Sugar Daddy" 7. Erykah Badu ft. Common "Love of My Life" Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland "Dilemma" 50 Cent ft. Olivia "Best Friend"

Pitchfork Reviews "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time"
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 07-Jul-2008, 8:20PM EDT
Video: Mariah Carey [ft. T.I.]: "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" In which Mariah Carey rides a dolphin and looks good doing it. The song's laidback beat, syncopated piano, occasional ascending strings, and pleasant T.I. verse make "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" a pretty perfect roller rink jam, and that's not even mentioning the fact that Carey hilariously makes a catchy chorus out of a reference to the "me so horny" line from Full Metal Jacket. At the very least, it's a nice breather in between repeat listens of "Love in This Club".
ELLE: "She Owns The Night"
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 07-Jul-2008, 6:18PM EDT
With her other worldly pipes, a lusty younger husband, and a record-shattering album, Mariah Carey is on the verge of all-encompassing world domination. But as Dan Crane quickly finds out, that doesn't mean she keeps regular office hours
"Do you hate me?" asks Mariah Carey, absorbing me into her well-toned figure with a firm hug. "I'm so sorry I'm late," she says, gazing into my eyes as she pulls away and flutters both hands in the air to illustrate what I can only assume is her rationale. "The nails are still drying!"
It's 12:37 A.M. I'm in the living room of a sprawling suite on a high floor of the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons in Los Angeles, and "Mimi" is, in fact, over two and a half hours late for our Friday night interview. It's classic diva: Make journalist cool heels down stairs in hotel bar while Mimi - what...? Has her nails done? Yes.
Why don't I mind? Unlike today's breed of talentless manufactured star churning out pop drivel, Mariah has been paying her dues for nearly 20 years - and the dividends continue to roll in. With the April release of her latest album, E=MC², and its tongue-in-cheek sing-along "Touch My Body," the seven-octave vocal acrobat topped Elvis' record for most No. 1 Billboard chart singles. Now, with 18 No. 1's, it's likely she'll soon bump the record-holding Beatles (who have 20) from their top spot, all - with the exception of just one track - with songs she's either written or cowritten. Her eponymous debut was released in 1990 and went platinum nine times; she's put out 10 more studio albums since and is the third-highest-selling female artist, behind Barbra Streisand and Madonna. She escaped a disastrous marriage to a former Sony record exec Tommy Mottola and survived an "emotional breakdown" in 2001. With 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi, the biggest-selling record of that year, she led a comeback coup, nearly erasing our memories of the critically and publicly eviscerated 2001 film and accompanying soundtrack train wreck known as Glitter.
And for me, at this late hour on a Friday night, it's no small compensation that at 38, her youthful face radiates an irresistible blend of beauty and charmed innocence. Poured into perfectly fitting Louis Vuitton jeans ("The new Lou-ees," she declares, in her self-mocking, outer-borough accent) topped with "an old sweatshirt from 1991" over a black Wolford bodysuit, she ensconces herself on one side of a love seat, legs extended. Her black patent Azzedine Alaia heels elegantly crossed one ankle over the other, she conjures a hip, fully clothed, modern-day version of Titan's Venus of Urbino.
Most of all, Venus Mimi seems happy - "festive", as she says. Why shouldn't she be? With another hit record under her belt and two new movies (Tennessee, which has already garnered her decent reviews on the festival circuit, and a cameo in the Adam Sandler vehicle You Don't Mess With the Zohan), and having just been named one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world - complete with gushing tribute penned by her hero, Stevie Wonder - Mariah has plenty of reasons to celebrate. Oh, and there's that recent little surprise marriage on the island of Eleuthera to 27-year-old actor-rapper Nick Cannon, who's slumbering in the next room, I'm told. The new Mister is certainly a sound sleeper ("Nothing can wake him up," Carey says), considering the loud barking that occasionally erupts from behind the bedroom door.
Though I've been warned of M.C.'s nocturnal reputation, I foolishly begin our conversation by asking the night owl if she's tired.
"Do I look good?" she responds in a silky voice. CONTINUE»
ELLE BEHIND THE COVER
At 8:30 on a Saturday night, Mariah Carey slipped into Milk Studios with her 10-plus entourage, wearing a teal dress she's owned for "eight years," Valentino bow heels, and her signature oversize sunglasses. She was immediately drawn to anything pink--her favorite color--specifically, body-hugging dresses by Dolce & Gabbana and Versace. By 3:30 A.M., the shoot was still going strong, thanks to M.C.'s latest album blasting on the stereo, a stack of pizzas, and a surprise appearance by Carey's new husband, Nick Cannon, who helped her squeeze into the blue Versace dress she's wearing on the cover. When the crew wrapped at 7 A.M. (!!), the newlyweds cuddled on the couch, looking at photos from a recent trip, where Cannon surprised his bride with a private evening at an amusement park, and giggled about how their love affair has been one wild and exciting ride.
Summertime is here and MC is heating things up again with her third single from, E=MC2. The tempo-driven "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" was a track that we first picked when we heard the album and it's even better now with the addition of a new re-mix featuring Hip-Hop star T.I. It's a total "groove record" whose retro feel is a breath of fresh air for a format that often puts more emphasis on beats and not necessarily melody. This MC track has both and is sure to connect with MC's core fans and beyond. BET ON IT!

Power Chord I first met Mariah Carey 10 years ago at a party we threw for her on the occasion of her appearance on the cover of Mirabella. It was an intimate dinner of 50 -- and it being my party, I naturally seated her next to me. She was convivial, polite, and every so often she seemed to escape into her own world, sitting quietly with a dreamy look on her face, and sort of singing under her breath. It was thrilling! That voice! Even at a quarter decibel, I could still hear the rich, multioctave, crystal-clear quality that moved her recent single "Touch My Body" to the top of the charts.
Mariah has a lot to sing about: In addition to the record she just broke -- more No. 1 singles than Elvis -- there is her recent marriage to the supercute Nick Cannon, a star of, among other things, the best movie ever, Drumline, which is played on TNT so often they should just give it its own dedicated channel. Mariah is a notorious night owl, and unfortunately I had to leave the shoot at 1:30 A.M., after Joe Zee and photographer Alexei Hay had completed just the first shot. Had I stayed, I would have gotten to meet Nick, who showed up at three and gamely posed with his new bride. Mariah sits down with writer Dan Crane (after midnight, of course), who finds a woman very much at home in the world and with herself, displaying an easy confidence and wicked sense of humor that is not usually part of her public image.
Mariah has been famous for her entire adult life, and she understands the vicissitudes and requirements of stardom well.

Grammys Midway: Is this Mariah Carey's year?
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 07-Jul-2008, 4:38AM EDT
Todd Martens of the LA Times Blogs gives a look at some of the more notable releases of late 2007 and the first half of 2008, and how they may fare come Grammy time. Below is his write-up for Mariah's E=MC²:
Grammy possibilities: Carey's "Mimi" marked a huge comeback for the artist, a much-needed return to form after the commercial/critical disappointments that were "Glitter" and "Charmbracelet." Recording Academy voters were apparently delighted that the megastar rebounded, and responded by awarding Carey 8 Grammy nominations, including album of the year. "E=MC2" closely follows the "Mimi" template, and at times feels like a track-by-track response (substitute "It's Like That" for "Migrate"), but audiences don't seem to mind. The album is still in the top 25 on U.S. pop charts two months after its release, and the album has already spawned two hit singles in "Touch My Body" and "Bye Bye." Carey will undoubtedly be awarded with a bevy of Grammy nominations, but don't bet on "E=MC2" scoring as many as "Mimi," and it likely won't be a favorite for an album of the year nod. It too closely sticks to the "Mimi" template.
Grammy deserving: Does it really matter? One of the best-selling artists of all time, Carey is more than critic-proof, and "E=MC2" likely didn't do anything to change anyone's mind about the singer. It's finely-produced dance-pop crafted by an assortment of the industry's highest-paid producers, and the strongest tracks are worthy representations of mainstream trends. But as a whole, "E=MC2" is responding to pop fashions rather than defining them.

"I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" Mediabase airplay as of week ending July 6, 2008: 11.588 million audience impressions with 1597 spins (Urban - 611, Pop - 480, Rhythmic - 446, Urban A/C - 54, Alternative - 4).
Novelist Jackie Collins has been promoting her latest book, "Married Lovers," traveling the country in a monster bus. She tells WQKR's Sam Tanenhaus, "It's a crazy bus. It was the former, so I've been told, Mariah Carey tour bus. So it's very luxurious. You know, we have a living room, we have two bathrooms, there's a queen-size bedroom, there's bunk beds. ...I can just imagine all the musicians when they were on here, having a great old party."
From the Westlife autobiography, Westlife: Our Story released on June 16, 2008, Mark Feehily talks about meeting Mariah Carey: "I asked to meet Mariah. The word got back saying Mariah would love to meet me. I walked into a room packed with media, a full-blown press conference with Mariah perched on an extravagant chaise longue. I was worried that she would be mean to me in front of the press but she was lovely."
American Idol finalists Carly Smithson, Brooke White, Syesha Mercado, Kristy Lee Cook and Ramiele Malubay took a break from tour rehearsals two weeks ago to sit down for a freewheeling conversation over dinner at West Hollywood's One Sunset restaurant. Looking back, the five remembered the trauma of their greatest challenge, Mariah Carey week, as what brought them together.
"That week was going to be the hardest week the girls were going to have," Smithson remembered. "Mariah Carey's voice is undeniably one of the greatest. How are we supposed to sing her songs and not be critiqued? That was why I picked something that wasn't well known, and I still got criticized. "You have a boy coming to sing any of those songs, he's, in that moment, going to sound like he made it himself. If I slowed down on 'You'll Always Be My Baby,' it would sound exactly the same."
"I tell my stories in my own way," she insists. "Not everything has to be soul-searching, gut-wrenching, heart-rendering. I'm not going to kill myself digging in night and day for that inner pain. If I did, I think it would be too heavy. I would hurt people and I would hurt myself. I'm not ready for it."
She gathers herself for one final free-form crescendo, like Streisand or Ethel Merman belting out a Broadway showstopper.
"Right now, I'm 24 and my style is what you hear. Mostly I'm choosing specifically to write lyrics that might inspire someone because I've been blessed with a positive and incredible life, I've been blessed with this ability - no matter what I went through, no matter how horrible I felt growing up, no matter how inadequate I felt I was, no matter how poor I was, no matter what - I'm here." By her high school years, she was determined to be a singer. Every night, she would go out to Manhattan to meet some musicians and hang out with them all night, catching up sleep the next morning and missing her classes. Because she was absent from her classes very often, she earned the nickname of Mirage. The teachers of her high school say that she was indifferent to the academics and the only thing that seemed to occupy her mind was becoming a singer. Once comedienne Whoopi Goldberg, hosting the annual Presidential Gala at Ford's Theatre (site of President Lincoln's assassination), jokingly referred to Mariah as "Pariah Carey," and that remark seems to describe humorously the kind of situation that Mariah was in during her high school years, with virtually no involvement with school and concetrating on her musical efforts. At this time she also started to write her own songs and make demo tapes, inching her way toward her dreams. READ MORE»

A Doberman named Princess was sitting regally in the lobby of a Manhattan skyscraper, tethered to her mistress by a chrome choke chain. The sleek young woman was decked out in bohemian black, profiling Ray Charles shades and studded with mall-sized diamonds in her jewelry. I asked if I could per her dog. Coolly she glanced at her canine, then eyed me for a long second and with a slight smile said, "Sure. Just don't get too close to her face." Here was a woman who liked protection. Still, I hadn't exactly expected "Dreamlover" diva Mariah Carey to bring a Doberman to an interview.
It was all the more disconcerting because her image is alternately that of a come-hitter video vixen, a Tinkerbell with Aretha pipes, or the girl next door. But in the lobby, Carey acted more like a songbird in the federal witness-protection program. READ MORE»
