Brazil Mourns Television Icon Hebe Camargo
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 30-Sep-2012, 12:48PM EDT
This weekend, Brazil mourns one of its television pioneers, Hebe Camargo, who died of cardiac arrest in her home in São Paulo on Saturday. Since 1950, Hebe was an icon in Brazilian television, starting as a singer and actress and later becoming host of the country's first female television program, "The World's Women." Over the course of 60 years, the longest span of time Hebe spent away from television was 2 years, for the birth of her only child, Marcello, in 1965.
Over the years, the catchphrase "Oh, how cute!" became synonymous with Hebe, as did the format of hosting informal interviews on a couch, which is copied by others today.
Mariah has a huge fanbase in Brazil, and in 1999, she appeared on The Hebe Camargo Show, where the beloved host presented her with a beautiful pair of shoes. Mariah was promoting her new album Rainbow, and below you can check out her three performances and her interview with Hebe:

Mariah, Keith Shed Tears During Idol Chicago Auditions
Posted by Angie on Wednesday, 26-Sep-2012, 7:36PM EDT
If the producers of American Idol were hoping for judges who would shed a tear on camera, they got it in pop star Mariah Carey and country singer Keith Urban. The two new judges admitted during a press conference Wednesday at the Adler Planetarium — where auditions for the Fox singing competition took place — that they got emotional listening to aspiring singers in Chicago.
"I literally was in tears today," said Carey, sitting alongside long time host Ryan Seacrest and fellow judges Urban, rapper Nicki Minaj and record producer and Idol original Randy Jackson.
"The stories are beyond belief. And they can sing too. It wasn't the norm, I'd imagine."
Urban said he was touched by one person in particular who was accompanied by his parents to the audition. It marked the first time the Idol hopeful had sung in front of his parents.
"I was fortunate to have my parents support me," Urban said, pointing out that parents don't always support their children's music dreams. "It was beautiful to see."
The judges met with auditioners Tuesday and Wednesday who made it past the producers round at the United Center in July, and the executive producers round that took place in Chicago days ago. Jackson and co. were in charge of determining who advanced to the next round (aka "You're going to Hollywood!").
Like Carey and Urban, Minaj is a newcomer to Idol. They replace season 10 and 11 judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. Minaj was the quietest of the panel during the brief press conference, which took place at the judges table with the Chicago skyline in full view in the background, but the "Starships" rapper did say of the auditions, "I've signed a lot of (breasts)."
It appeared as if there would be a completely new panel when Lopez and Tyler parted ways with the show in July, but Jackson now comes back for his 12th season as the experienced veteran. He has embraced the role by giving the new judges a few pointers and seemed the most at ease Wednesday.
"(Jackson) has given us a lot of insight," said Carey. "I've already said this publicly, but I haven't been watching Idol every night. ... He's been enlightening me."
To date, Mount Prospect's Lee DeWyze is the only Chicago-area native to win Idol during the show's 11 seasons. Chicago native Jennifer Hudson came in seventh place on the show in 2004 but is the city's most successful Idol alum after having won an Oscar and Grammy. Speaking of Idol alums, Carey said former winner Jordin Sparks, in town to sing the national anthem at the Ryder Cup opening ceremonies, visited the set that day.
"She didn't make it through to the next round, unfortunately," Urban said without missing a beat.
The 12th season of American Idol premieres in January.

Karaoke Advice: Mariah Carey
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 21-Sep-2012, 7:01AM EDT
Is there a rule of thumb for seasonal classics? The last time I did karaoke (July), I sang "All I Want for Christmas is You" and it killed, but I'm hesitant about trying a repeat performance. Was it a fluke? –Christine
With the holidays approaching, you might start to hear a plethora of winter-specific hits. Or, depending on your karaoke locale, you might not. Prove me wrong, but I doubt people are rushing to sing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." But that's not what Christine is asking. Killing a song is killing a song - there's no limit on its timeliness. That being said, I'd argue that Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas is You" breaks the boundaries of being a solely Christmas song. Sure, it gets bumped up to the top of the charts EVERY CHRISTMAS (Get it, Mariah!) but its magical pop construction is relevant year-round and you shouldn't be afraid to "kill it" in karaoke every week. You might even get the privilege of getting to be known as That Girl Who Kills All I Want For Christmas Is You and that would be the ultimate Christmas Miracle.
Mariah Talks American Idol Judging Strategy
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 20-Sep-2012, 9:58AM EDT
Mariah Carey's new stint as an American Idol judge officially began with Sunday's first season-12 auditions in New York, and so far, the Grammy-winning, butterfly-loving, mother-of-twins pop diva appears to be doling out the tough love.
"I try to be honest and I try to be constructive," Carey told THR on Wednesday night at a Peggy Siegal Company party for Penny Marshall's new book, My Mother Was Nuts, at Monkey Bar in midtown.
"I don't know if that means that I'm nice or mean or whatever," she continued. "I'm a producer and I'm a songwriter, and I look at myself as a singer as kind of third. But I look at these kids as though we're in the studio producing a record. And if I feel they should have done something a certain way, I'll say, 'you can try this, you can try this,' only in a constructive way, to sort of be a guide and someone to give them guidance rather than, like, judging somebody."
So far, she said, "It's been very interesting. The main thing is seeing how many diverse voices there are out there, and how much untapped talent there really is and we're only in the first two shows so far."
A smiling and seemingly relaxed Carey dined at a table across from Marshall, who also drew such power pals as Lorne Michaels, Barry Diller and Gayle King to her event.
Earlier this week, Idol host Ryan Seacrest addressed reports that Carey is feuding with Minaj, saying in an appearance on the Today show: "Nicki and Mariah, two very different, strong, powerful successful women on the panel - there are not too many dull moments between the two of them. But at the end of the day, we all hug and laugh and go home and get ready for another day."
When asked about working with Minaj, Carey demurred, "You know what, I think the whole thing is gonna be an experience that unfolds each day. But it's cool, I'm glad to be there, and right now after this, I'm going to the studio and working on some new music and (I'm) excited about that... That's always gonna be the most exciting thing for me."

American Idol Press Conference Highlights
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 17-Sep-2012, 6:10PM EDT
Earlier today, Mariah and her fellow American Idol judges held a press conference in New York City. Here are some highlights of what Mariah had to say about her new role on the hit show.
ON HER JUDGING STYLE:
"I won't be judging, I'll be guiding," Mariah explained.
The R&B superstar said she's not worried about being dubbed the "nice" or "mean" one on the panel.
"What I want to be is honest and someone contestants can look to for guidance as opposed to... the mean one, the nice one. It's not about that," she continued. "I'm me. I am who I am, I'm a producer, I made a lot of records in my life, I know the studio, I live there. I performed all over the world, so it's not about me, me, me it's about them."
And should contestants attempt to belt out a Mariah song?
"They can sing anything that moves them, as a songwriter I would be honored," Mariah said.
ON HER DECISION TO JOIN IDOL:
Mariah Carey, who turned up in a tight, pink dress, confessed that she had "never been a fan of this type of thing." But she said she recognized what the show had done for some talented singers by "truly giving them careers" She also cited the panache that goes along with the brand" as a reason to overcome her initial reluctance to join.
ON RUMORS OF A FEUD WITH FELLOW JUDGE NICKI MINAJ:
Carey tried to quell rumors about her quarreling with Minaj by saying they've only been together two days and "a feud takes a little longer to happen."
All the judges burst into laughter.
Minaj says the new Idol judges are "getting along wonderfully."
ON THE ATMOSPHERE ON SET:
For her part, Minaj says she's just happy to be there, telling reporters, "It's wonderful, darling," when asked how she liked being on the show so far.
Added Jackson: "We're having fun, dude. We've been having a good time. There has been a lot of laughs."
"It's music," said Carey. "It's singing. It's laughter."
ON THE CONTESTANTS:
Mariah Carey said "I think we saw some really talented people today. I was impressed"

American Idol Announces Judges
Posted by Angie on Sunday, 16-Sep-2012, 10:51AM EDT
It's official: American Idol is adding new judges from the worlds of country music and hip hop.
Fox announced Sunday that 44-year-old Aussie singer Keith Urban and colorful 29-year-old rapper Nicki Minaj will sit with pop diva Mariah Carey at the season 12 judges table of the reality hit, along with returning judge Randy Jackson. The confirmation settles months of behind-the-scenes reports and speculation about the show's panel that saw singers such as Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Nick Jonas, Adam Lambert and Kanye West floated as possible judges.
"Nicki's an unbelievably captivating international phenomenon who has made an indelible mark on rap and pop," said Fox's president of alternative Mike Darnell in a statement. "And Keith is another great addition to Idol - he's one of the biggest stars in country music and I know that our fans and contestants will fall in love with him. With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan [Seacrest], we've put together one of the most exciting judging panels around."
Earlier this summer, Fox announced the exit of Idol season 10 and 11 judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, along with the hiring of Carey. The network then strongly considered shifting Jackson to a mentor role. After quietly selecting Minaj and Urban for slots, Fox recently made an offer to Latin singer-songwriter Enrique Iglesias to fill a fourth spot, but those talks broke down last week. In addition to Carey receiving about $17 million for her role on the show, we're hearing Urban will pull down about $4 million. According to one report, Minaj will earn around $8 million.
The network hopes the new hires will boost the ratings of the aging series – or at least stabilize its declines. Though Idol remains TV's top entertainment series, the show suffered a record year-over-year ratings drop last season. Part of the problem is the marketplace has become more crowded with singing competition shows like NBC's The Voice and Fox's own X Factor.
The announcement also confirms Idol will return to a four-judge format that the show previously used in its eighth and ninth seasons. Idol switched back to three judges after some felt the show was spending too much time showcasing the judges' opinions rather than the contestants' performances. But hot rival The Voice has managed to function just fine with four judges, and X Factor has employed a judging quartet as well.
One question is whether the addition of Minaj and Urban will result in a greater diversity of singers going to Hollywood, or just give the panel some fresh perspective. Though Idol's most successful graduate, Carrie Underwood, is a country artist, and the show has had several rock and country contestants over the years, Idol is best known for celebrating pop music (the show is based on the British series Pop Idol). Rap music has been practically nonexistent on the show.

Nigel Lythgoe on Mariah Carey: I Hope She Doesn't Raise the Bar to Her Level
When the queen of pop becomes the judge, can anyone really measure up? American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe is speaking out about his opinion on Mariah Carey joining the FOX family.
And, while he is certain that she is more than qualified, he is worried that her massive resume and iconic status might cast too big a shadow for the up and coming contestants.
In other Idol news... Country crooner Keith Urban's departure from Australia's The Voice has revived rumors he'll become a judge on American Idol. Urban cited "a tour and other commitments" in announcing his departure.
His name has popped up repeatedly regarding Idol, which added Mariah Carey and is rumored to be close to signing Nicki Minaj as a judge.
Celine Dion Mentions Mariah in Extra Interview

Celine Dion has a lot on her plate these days between the "Celine" show at Caesars and upcoming albums, "Water and Flame" and "Sans attendre" due out this fall — so much in the works that she doesn't have time for "American Idol."
"[I have thought about] being with Mariah Carey and doing something with her, yeah, definitely, but to join 'American Idol' and be a judge kind of thing... no. I have too much on my plate... and the time off I have, I'm not looking for a job. I really want to be home with my kids."
Not only is she a Mariah fan, but she loves Adele, too. "She's just amazing. I say it every night. I sing one of her songs. I love everything about her."

Idol Judging Panel Firms Up
Posted by Angie on Tuesday, 11-Sep-2012, 3:24AM EDT
Fox can't keep a good dawg down. Randy Jackson, the last remaining original American Idol judge, will return this winter for the show's 12th season, insiders confirmed on Monday. The last minute return of Jackson comes after talks broke off with singing star Enrique Iglesias.
Negotiations are also in the final stages with pop star Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban to join Mariah Carey and Jackson on the panel. Fox is expected to announce the new Idol judges' table by the end of the week.
Jackson was always expected to remain on Idol in some capacity – but as speculation about Iglesias heated up in recent weeks, it looked like Jackson might segue into a mentoring role on the show (similar to what music exec Jimmy Iovine already does on Idol). But sources say the Idol producers and Iglesias remained far apart on a deal (one source said Iglesias was asking for a salary in the eight-figure range), which is why Jackson was ultimately called back to judge duty. (According to one source, Minaj is expected to pull down around $10 million, while Urban is likely to make around $4 million.)
Jackson was instrumental in helping bring Carey (whom he co-manages) to Idol, which is why his participation on the show in some capacity was never in doubt. But it wasn't clear until Monday what Jackson's role would ultimately be. The news was first hinted at earlier in the day by Jackson's former Idol colleague Simon Cowell, who Tweeted, "Just heard Randy is back on Idol. Right decision."
Jackson's return gives Idol a bit of continuity in the face of another judges' panel overhaul, along with the return of host Ryan Seacrest and return of executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. With Carey, Jackson, Minaj and Urban, the show is also returning to a four-judge panel, something it last tried in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Mariah Carey On Her Most Revealing Song
Posted by Jonny on Monday, 10-Sep-2012, 7:37PM EDT
Mariah Carey's 1997 album "Butterfly" holds a number of hits, including the smash singles "Honey" and "My All."
But it's also the album on which Carey tucked an introspective and revealing song called "Close My Eyes."
The powerhouse vocalist was honored by Broadcast Music, Inc. on September 7 for her songwriting, and she told CNN that the compositions she holds closest typically aren't the songs that became chart-toppers.
Instead, her favorites are often lesser-known cuts from more obscure records.
She cites "Underneath The Stars" from the 1995 album "Daydream" as well as "Looking In" and "I Am Free" from the same album as some of her favorites.
Of big No. 1 hits such as "Touch My Body" "We Belong Together" and "Hero," Carey said: "I still love those songs," but added, "I love the obscure songs because they're very close to my heart. Especially a song called, 'Close My Eyes' - that's like my life story."
The down-tempo, piano-backed track paints a picture of a woman with a past - "I was a wayward child, with the weight of the world that I held deep inside," Carey sings. "Life was a winding road, and I learned many things little ones shouldn't know."
But, like her new single "Triumphant (Get 'Em)," the chorus speaks of courage in the face of adversity: "But I closed my eyes, steadied my feet on the ground, raised my head to the sky. And though times rolled by, still I feel like a child as I look at the moon... Maybe I grew up a little too soon."
While Carey didn't go into detail about the experiences that inspired that song, she did describe what led to the creation of "Triumphant."
Carey said her husband, Nick Cannon, was going through some health problems around the same time her friend Whitney Houston died.
"There was just so much going on," she said.
"It was such an awful time... I don't even know how to express what was happening, but I had to express it through music in terms of going the opposite way, almost to encourage myself."
And by encouraging herself, she hoped to encourage others. "I say, 'Stay triumphant. Keep on living.' That is what I wanted people to hear - I wanted people who didn't have the strength... That's why I'm glad that I put this record out, because that's what it meant to me. And I was also singing what I would want to sing in an encouraging way to my kids." Carey's twins with Cannon, Monroe and Moroccan, celebrated their first birthday in April.
There's a good chance "Triumphant" will have the impact Carey's hoping for, as she's heard from fans how her songs have changed their lives.
"This (BMI Icon) award is so amazing because ... this is really about songwriting and there have been many times that people have told me throughout my career that: 'This song has changed my life,' 'This song helped me get through the death of a family member,' " Carey said.
"And as the writer of that song... there's no greater feeling than that."

Interviews From the BMI Red Carpet
Posted by Jonny on Sunday, 09-Sep-2012, 1:00PM EDT
On Friday, September 7, 2012, Mariah was honored with the BMI Icon Award, in recognition of her songwriting talent. Before heading in to the ceremony, Mariah stopped on the red carpet to talk about how much receiving this honor means to her:
"This is a really... something that I didn't really expect, but it's an amazing honor, because all my life I've been a songwriter. Even as a little girl, I was writing poetry that was my release, you know, something that got me through tough times, and so, being able to be acknowledged for songwriting is something that's awesome, because not everyone realizes that I write my own material and that I always have. So I'm grateful, really grateful! And so grateful to all the people here tonight to sing and all that stuff! I can't wait to go and hear all these amazing vocalists inside! I think that, especially tonight, this being the Urban Music Awards, it's just great to really feel a grassroots quality about it and to feel that R&B has always been close to my heart, and you know, it's one of those things where I'll always make music, I'll always sing and write songs. But writing songs is just something I have to do for me, as an individual."
Several of Mariah's colleagues were there that night to pay tribute to her. In addition to performing stellar renditions of some of her songs, they also stopped to talk about the impact that Mariah and her songwriting have had on them and the music industry.
Karen Clark Sheard: "Oh what an honor it is to be here to, first of all, be asked to pay tribute to a woman who is so worthy. Mariah has certainly been a great inspiration to me, so to be asked to sing one of her songs is just... I just hope it'd bless her, and it's just an honor! I look up to her, and from a singer to a singer, she is one who is just... I mean, you study her! You know? She's greatness!"
Randy Jackson: "She deserves this so much. She's one of the most talented writers ever, and you know a lot of times people forget because, you know, she's sold over 200 million records and she's one of the greatest singers ever. But they forget that she writes the songs so, you know, this is a great honor for her, a great honor for us, a great honor for everyone, actually. She's a real writer. A great story, a great message, and an amazing melody. Amazing melody, with a great lyric! She does all of that extremely well."
Joe: "Well for one, I think it starts with her talent, you know? She's absolutely amazing when she sings, and if you ever get a chance to be around her, you'll just find out how much of an incredible person she is. I'm just- as I said before, it's such a privilege to have worked with her in the past. We had her- I think it was her 17th number one record, "Thank God I Found You." And it's been a blessing, it's been pretty amazing."
Eric Benet: "It's an honor. You know, I mean she's one of those national treasures. So I'm just really glad to be asked to celebrate her career and her life tonight... She set the bar very high, she did it very early, you know? I remember being really young, back in Wisconsin I was in a top 40 band, and all of a sudden there was this new girl who splashed on the scene with "Vision of Love" and with this angelic voice, and you know, she's just one of those artists where you're mesmerized by her voice, and then you find out, 'Oh you wrote the song too?' Come on, so it's just so much talent, and worthy to celebrate tonight."
Stevie J: "I wanted to come out and show support for Mariah Carey. I've worked with her, and I've had a lot of success making records for her. She's beautiful, she's a mother. She's what urban music is all about. She represents for all of the young ladies in the world, that's out there doing their best. She's made a mark in the world. I support Mariah, and I support BMI."
Nick Cannon: "It's a pleasure to be here, you know, being a supportive husband, that's the thing. My wife is an icon, but at the same time, she's the best wife in the world as well. We kind of love the same type of music, and exploring different things. Obviously, in her work she's a genius when it actually comes to making music but we kind of share the same love of it, same styles of music. Parenting comes first. You make that the priority and everything else comes after that."

Stevie J Working On Music With Mariah

As the obligatory villain, and self-professed "good guy" of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, the business opportunities continue to roll in for Stevie J, but he's still very much focused on his music.
The New York native has produced hits for the likes of Mariah Carey, Jay-Z and more, and has been working on a bunch of new projects. "I'm just going to continue to put out music, continue to put out product," he tells Hip-Hop Wired. "Continue to be a great dad, and a moving force in our community."
According to Stevie he will re-team with Carey, plus add Kanye West to his resume. "I'm working on music for Mariah, for Kanye, and for a host of other artists. I'm just gon' keep producing and get back on my music game, now that television [is] over."
Carey, who was honored as an icon at this year's BMI Urban Awards, is working on a new album, the lead single of which is the inspirational track "Triumphant," featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill. Stevie produced "Breakdown," "Honey," and "Babydoll" for the songstress but wants to keep the details behind the new music he's cooking up for her, under wraps. "You gotta' stay tuned," he says.
Signing on to appear on reality TV has the potential to be a major payoff for Stevie. Aside from making music for others, he's also working on his own project, and a relationship book.

E! Entertainment caught up with Mariah Friday night at the BMI Urban Awards, where she was honored with the BMI Icon Award. Mariah spoke about being honored for her songwriting, and also talked about her twins, Moroccan and Monroe. Regarding the BMI Icon award, here is what she had to say:
"Thank you so much! It's really exciting. I was just saying, it's so great because I've writing songs my whole life, I love it. It's my favorite pastime- my favorite form of expression and release. Tonight's really not about like diva dramatics or whatever kinds of things, gossipy moments. It's about the music and that's what's most important to me."
Mariah Accepts BMI Icon Award
Posted by Angie on Saturday, 08-Sep-2012, 4:18AM EDT
Mariah Carey was late to the BMI Urban Music Awards, where she was the guest of honor, but that didn't stop other artists from literally singing her praises.
Fantasia Barrino and Eric Benet were among those who serenaded the star with her own hits. Benet performed "One Sweet Day" and the former American Idol sang "Hero" during the private ceremony at the Saban Theatre, where writers, producers and publishers of the year's top urban hits were recognized Friday.
Barrino stepped off stage and stood right in front of Carey in the audience's front row as she wailed the final words of the song. When she finished, they embraced.
BMI chief Del Bryant presented Carey with the music-rights organization's Icon Award for her outstanding songwriting that has resulted in 18 No. 1 singles and more than 200 million albums sold.
Bryant called her "an unparalleled musical superstar" and "the greatest singer in history."
He also endorsed her new position as a judge on American Idol.
"Who knows more about musical artistry and song selection than Mariah Carey?" Bryant asked. "Sorry, Randy, didn't see you there," he added, jabbing at Carey collaborator and longtime Idol judge Randy Jackson.
Carey, 42, didn't mention Idol as she accepted her award. She simply thanked the performers "for doing something so beautiful with the songs I wrote" and BMI for honoring her songwriting contributions.
"I'm so humbled by this moment because a lot of people still don't know I write my own songs," she said.
Other entertainers honored Friday included Nicki Minaj, who had the year's most played song with "Super Bass," and Drake and Lil Wayne, who were named songwriters of the year for their string of hits. None of the rappers were on hand to accept the honors.

R&B superstar Mariah Carey surprised the crowd at a New York City jazz club on Wednesday (05Sep12) by putting on an impromptu show.
The Fantasy hitmaker was in the Big Apple for her televised NFL Kickoff appearance, during which she sang new track "Triumphant" to launch the American football season. However, she wasn't ready to hang up her microphone after the performance - she later visited Manhattan's famous Cafe Carlyle and belted out her favourite jazz songs while sharing a bench with the club's pianist.
The singer took to Twitter.com to share a photo of herself with a handful of musicians, including bassist Randy Jackson - Carey's new American Idol colleague.
She tweeted, "During an impromptu visit to the Carlyle, singing jazz standards I've loved since childhood." Her husband Nick Cannon and longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri were also in the audience.

Mariah Mentions: Comedian Steve Byrne recently spoke to the Miami New Times and in his interview he talked about opening for Mariah's Charmbracelet Tour in Colorado in 2003:
I can't imagine the amount of material you must be sitting on because of this, but can you share one hilarious happening from opening for Kanye West or Mariah Carey?
I opened for Mariah in Red Rocks in Colorado. 15,000 people. The lights dim, the crowd goes nuts. The announcer says,"ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Mariah Carey's Charm Bracelet Tour." The crowd goes crazier. He then says," and now, Steve Byrne." Silence. They had no idea who I was. They never knew I was a comedian. To hear 15,000 psyched to see a star and then hear absolute silence is always humbling.
Mariah is mentioned on the Disney Channel show "Pair of Kings," episode 14 entitled "Deaf Jam." In it, one of the kings wants to sing for the kingdom, but his brother doesn't want him to be embarrassed, because he really can't sing. The singing king is convinced by his brother that he "swallowed Mariah Carey and she's playing a concert in his belly." He then does a bad imitation of Mariah's singing style, hands and all, and later proceeds to say "Mariah's craving the fire (said like 'fiah')." You can view the episode here and the Mariah mention is between the 6:00-7:00 minute mark.
Fan Corner: Angelo made a very festive video for "Triumphant (Vintage Throwback Remix)." View it by visiting his YouTube channel.
