MDJ Reader Responds to 'Truth about Nursing' Outburst
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 12-Mar-2010, 6:15PM EST | Comments ()

We have received an enormous amount of e-mails in response to The Truth About Nursing outburst at Mariah Carey and her video "Up Out My Face." Unfortunately, we can't post all of them but we have one that we want to share with you. Andrew, a nurse practitioner and a Mariah fan, sends us a copy of his e-mail to the board of directors at The Truth About Nursing. He tells us, "I felt I had to stand up for Mariah Carey and fight back!" To Whom It May Concern at The Truth about Nursing:
I think your newest conquest to banish Mariah Carey's new video "Up Out My Face" is asinine and misguided. As a homosexual male nurse practitioner, I am exhausted with the efforts of such organizations as yours fighting battles that are not worth fighting in healthcare. And claiming that you speak for all nurses? Hardly the case!
On your home page you describe Mariah Carey in just as despicable a way, verbally, as she portrays you (nurses) creatively... "but it has often seemed that she doesn't have much to say with it, except: 'I want to be rich, famous, and adored, and if my voice doesn't convince you, how about my body?' Carey has been so well-known for doing whatever is necessary to advance her career that she inspired a 2004 Sonic Youth song about it." Is Mariah Carey well-known for doing "whatever is necessary to advance her career?" I've certainly never heard such a thing. I think she would disagree with the above subjective jargon as would you if someone made the same opinionated comment toward your efforts in life.
That statement is as much an opinion about her character as her video is about yours. She deserves an apology from your organization for judging her character and relegating her to merely a physical icon void of intellect, talent, and compassion. This statement is utterly preposterous and how you can allow such nonsense to be on the front page of your website is just as unacceptable as her imagery of nurses as "naughty."
Healthcare is in a quorum at this present moment. We are on the brink of such profound changes in medical history that our very careers and lives of our future generations hinge upon our actions now. Our passion directed to ridiculous pop culture is an utter waste of time. How about we redirect our passions from individuals creatively expressing themselves to furthering access of care for our nation and the world?
If we are going to hunt down the naughty nurse persona and fight back with our own inadequate arguments, why don't we make it consistent and go after the costume shops, the porn industry, the countless children that dress up as doctors and nurses during Halloween? Why don't we fight for a federal mandate to hinder females from wearing tight fitting white nursing outfits if they have cleavage, for fear that they may be interpreted as "naughty?" Why don't we get off our moral, hypocritical nursing high horses?
Additionally, why don't we fight the stereotype that all male nurses are gay? As a gay male nurse practitioner, I'm not at all offended by the jokes and innuendos. Are you? Are others? My skills, intelligence, and passion for patient care speak volumes and subsequently, I am respected – regardless my sexual proclivities.
In conclusion, I polled the nurses at my hospital regarding the above topic and not a single nurse agreed with your outburst. As a gay male, who has battled stereotypes all of my life, professionally and otherwise, I would encourage you all to begin fighting battles in nursing that "all" nurses really want to fight.
Thanks for your consideration to the above. I would hope that you would see the necessity to apologize to Mariah Carey for the above offenses made to her on behalf of your organization.

Nurses to Mariah: Quit the Naughty Routine
Posted by Lynn on Friday, 12-Mar-2010, 9:13AM EST | Comments ()
|
The folks at the Truth About Nursing, a Baltimore-based group concerned about demeaning portrayals of nurses have a new target: Mariah Carey. Yep, you heard that right. The pop star's video for her song "Up Out My Face" takes the naughty nurse stereotype to a new level of low, according to Sandy Summers, the group's director. Complete with a booty-grazing nurse outfit, white cap and stockings, Mariah's version of naughty nurse has real nurses in an uproar, apparently. They dissect the video and the lyrics here. The group has even launched a letter writing campaign urging Ms. Carey herself to "make amends by withdrawing the video from all distribution, avoiding the stereotype in the future and publicly apologizing to the nursing profession (in a music video perhaps!)." |

Nicki Minaj on Working with Mariah
Posted by Lynn on Monday, 08-Feb-2010, 3:12PM EST | Comments ()

|
Nicki Minaj says she was so surprised that she got a call to work with Mariah Carey on the remix of "Up Out My Face" that she kept the collaboration very hush-hush.
"That one, I didn't believe until I was physically in the studio that I was doing with something with Mariah," the New York native told MTV News last week. "I didn't even tell anyone I shot a video with Mariah, because I didn't even believe. In the back of my mind, I felt like, 'This video is not gonna come out. There's no way I'm gonna do a video with Mariah Carey before I even put out my album.' Then, when it came out, I think it was the #1 video on YouTube in one day, something crazy like that. She's an icon, I've loved her since I was little, like 'Vision of Love,' 'Someday.' I was one of those little girls in the mirror singing her songs with my mother."
Much like her fellow Mariah Carey collaborator and good friend Gucci Mane, Minaj said the real Mariah was nothing like she imagined.
"When I met her, she was so funny and silly," Nicki recalled. "I thought when I was gonna work with Mariah, [she] was gonna be like this diva. But we were cracking jokes the whole day. She's a sweet, down-to-earth person."
Nicki and Mimi had their names written on two giant baby doll boxes in the video. In the Nick Cannon-directed clip, the two bust out and have a good time changing outfits and playing with men. The doll angle plays perfectly with Nicki's "black Barbie" persona.
"I think it was dope," Minaj said about the video. "A lot of times, more famous artists or more confident artists take from a younger artist but they'll never include you in that. I feel like she liked the whole doll thing and she wanted to do it with me. But she said that: She said, 'Everybody's gonna say "she's doing Nicki." But I told her, she's always had a doll persona, like all that 'doll baby' [stuff]. So it goes perfect with Barbie and we had fun. That's all that matters." |

Mariah Carey debuts on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at No. 97 with "Up Out My Face," featuring Nicki Minaj. The song is the fourth charted entry from "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," following "Obsessed" (No. 12), "I Want to Know What Love Is" (No. 40) and "H.A.T.E.U." (No. 72). Her "Angels Advocate" remix album streets March 30.
With the new song's launch, Carey extends her R&B/Hip-Hop Songs record among female artists for consecutive years with a debut. She has sent a song onto the chart in each of the 21 years she has appeared on the list, dating to the debut of "Vision of Love" on June 2, 1990.
Among fellow female format luminaries, Gladys Knight debuted on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs each year from 1967 through 1989. The first 22 years of her streak, however, are archived under a group billing - Gladys Knight & the Pips - while her 1989 entry was as a solo act.
Aretha Franklin also maintained a prominent presence on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in all but one year between 1964 and 1989. Her streak of debuts was interrupted by a lack of new entries only in 1984. |

EW Reviews "Up Out My Face" Video
Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 28-Jan-2010, 4:16PM EST | Comments ()

New Mariah Carey video, 'Up Out My Face': Finally! Mimi is emancipated by hot new videoBy Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly Sometimes, Mariah gets it wrong ("H.A.T.E. U"? H.A.T.E.D. those freakin swimsuits. "I Want to Know What Love Is"? I want to know why you're in a baseball stadium full of sad people). And then—she gets it so right. In the new video for "Up Out My Face" from her upcoming duets remix album Angels Advocate, due March 30, there are so very many things to love: the color scheme (Target ad? White Stripes tribute?); the nonsensical (but sexical!) nurses' outfits and Barbie boxes; rising Lil Wayne protege Nicki Minaj getting red, white, and saucypants all over; Nick Cannon (he also directs the clip) reprising his Drumline stomp in the outro. They wear silly outfits, they make silly faces; they have fun. Wasn't that delicious? Do you not want to put Minaj in your pocket? Are you fonder of Nick Cannon than you were five and half minutes ago? (He also directed his wife in another new video, the less-than-scintillating Ne-Yo collaboration "Angels Cry," but we are letting that one slide; it is a forgiveness kind of day). |
